ALETTER THE WAY I SEE IT ...

experiences are the way to my heart. Sometimes I need a push off the couch, but once up, I will book the tickets and get ready. If it’s not illegal or immoral, count me in. I’ll be Thelma or Louise in any convertible on any road to just about any laughter and fun. I’m counting the days to convertible weather, but I may fly south to the beach before it warms up here. In 2026, I’m committed to finding some fun “Emily in Paris” times again! I can think of at least one girlfriend who might even drive the getaway car.

s I opened my computer to write about the excitement of January, the new year, and the topic of “love,” I thought, “Of all people, I am the worst choice for this subject.” UGH. So . . . I closed my laptop and bingewatched the new season of “Emily in Paris” instead.

That’s what we do, those of us who aren’t married, tending to children full-time, or dating at 55: we binge-watch Netflix series. There’s great comfort found by escaping under a heated blanket, with the lights off and a television on—and I do recommend “Emily in Paris” for cute television with a flair for fashion. Like me, the protagonist of the show can fall in love and swear off men entirely, all in less than a season. Watching this show, which features a young woman chasing her dreams in the marketing world, reminds me just a teeny bit of myself 30 years ago. Your 20s are the days when you are bold enough to say and wear and do anything, without the fear of public scrutiny.

In my early 20s, while I was in graduate school, I sold cars. My motto was, “Sell a car; buy a dress.” I loved working and shopping. That was B.K.—before kids. Today, I find no joy in retail therapy, either in-store or online. It’s a chore. If you really know me, now you understand why I’m a terrible dresser—I hate to shop (at least when it comes to clothes; I live for a good estate sale, antiques shop, or art gallery).

When I try to imagine the I love, I don’t think of “things”; it’s always experiences. Does an expensive handbag make me happy in 2026? No. Even 10 years ago, when I thought something tangible with a luxury tag would bring me joy, upon attainment, the new faded fast, and there came another prize to work for. Today, things don’t rev my engine;

As for “true love”—I have tried my hand at it, and I have failed miserably. I also take the blame for the failures. For many years, I had excuses or reasons why my marriages did not last, but after almost 15 years of being single, I know that the easiest thing to do is quit, instead of digging in for the long haul. (I also know that getting a divorce is not always a “failure”; things don’t have to last forever or never change shape to be counted as “successes,” and, in certain circumstances, a break-up is an accomplishment worth celebrating.)

I’m a lover of the idea of love. I enjoy writing other people’s love stories. I enjoy watching European movies about kings and queens, listening to Ella Langley and Riley Green on repeat, and reading Jane Austen books. The idea of romantic love is truly intoxicating. But these days, alas, my best love stories involve grands, my adult kiddos, my momma, a few close friends, and work. Those are the relationships in which I can work toward being a better human. Tears from the past are long dry, and the future is wide open for more happiness and love.

My favorite life phrase—one I’ve stolen from Dr. Stephen Covey and said for years—reflects the successes and failures that I have lived publicly and privately: “Love is a verb.” Split-ups don’t “just happen.” We have all seen devastation between couples, family members, friendships, and business relationships. When people stop trying, talking, or taking care of each other, relationships end. As I look through the marvelous weddings featured this month, I wish all of the couples a lifetime of love-as-a-verb. I truly believe that if both parties love actively and intentionally, success—defined as joy, hope, and growth—is all but inevitable.

When I sat down at my computer, I did not want to write this editorial. Netflix won. Yet, when I finally started writing, I realized that there is no huge hole in my heart as an unmarried woman. When I am busy experiencing life with my people—my mom, my kids, my friends, and the three little humans who know me as RoRo—I feel alive and very much in love. Life’s journey is only as great as you dream, believe, and do. Now, please excuse me, as get to planning 2026 experiences with the loves of my life. THE PROPOSAL

“It was on October 28th, 2023, in Dallas, Texas, at Flippen Park. It was a rainy day, and Sam had been acting a little odd the past few days, so I had a feeling something was up,” Lauren shared. “Sam is a huge Dallas sports fan, and the Texas Rangers were playing in the World Series at the time. I knew when he asked me to go on a ‘date’ during Game 2 of the World Series that he might be proposing . . . and I was right. I wasn’t completely caught off-guard, but the proposal was still so special. Afterwards, he surprised me with an engagement party at his aunt’s house with all of our family and friends.”

THE DETAILS

“[Our first dance song was] ‘Beauty and the Beast,’” Lauren said. “I really struggled to pick a song for our first dance. Sam and I are both Disney lovers. I think this song is a beautiful description of falling in love. Like the lyrics say, ‘Barely even friends, then somebody bends unexpectedly,’ Sam and I were friends for a short while, and then, all of the sudden, he was the one I wanted to spend my life with.”

“The best part of my wedding was having all of my favorite people together in one room,” Lauren said. “Sam and I felt so loved and celebrated, and that is because of the people we had surrounding us.”

“I knew going into my wedding that I wanted to incorporate my 9-year-old daughter into my father-daughter dance,” Lauren said. “Growing up, my dad would always sing ‘PYT’ by Michael Jackson to me, so this seemed like an obvious choice. A week before the wedding, my daughter and I made up a simple dance to ‘PYT’ that my dad would be able to follow. On the big day, my dad and I started by dancing to ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ by Stevie Wonder. To his surprise, I pushed him off the dance floor halfway through, and the song transitioned to ‘PYT.’ I pulled my daughter onto the dance floor, and together, she and I eventually pulled him back out. He was so surprised.”

“When it came time to choose someone to officiate our wedding, I could not think of someone more well spoken than my brother, Will,” Lauren said. “I cried pretty much the entire ceremony. He incorporated countless memories and hopes for the future into our ceremony. My favorite part was how he included the lyrics from a Coldplay song, ‘Til Kingdom Come,’ which I would always play for Will when I’d drive him around. He compared this special song to Sam’s and my relationship. It is something I will cherish forever.”

“One of my maids of honor bought a cutout of Harry Styles, my first love, as a prop for my wedding. He was with us when we got ready, at the reception, and even on the dance floor,” Lauren said. “It was just a silly, meaningful touch that made my day extra special and fun.

“This isn’t new when it comes to wedding ideas, but we had a photo booth with prints,” Lauren said. “This is what we used as our guest book. I really enjoyed looking through all of the photos, both online and in the guest book, after the wedding.”

“Because I love the song ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire, it has been a long-time dream to get married on September 21st,” Lauren sad. “Obviously, that didn’t happen, so at my rehearsal dinner, my mom’s side of the family created a surprise music video to that song and played it for me.”

“My favorite part of the wedding was our entire ceremony,” Sophie said. “It truly felt like we were the only two people in the room. Every part of it was so uniquely ‘us,’ and I loved every single second. The whole space just felt full of love and support.”

“Our families joined together in prayer during the ceremony while my cousin, Will Stuckey, sang ‘Build My Life’ by Pat Barrett,” Sophie shared. “It was such a powerful, emotional moment”

“I walked down the aisle to ‘Thank God I Do,’ sung by Ashley Saunders, who also sang at my parents’ wedding,” Sophie said. “It felt like such a full-circle, meaningful tradition”

“Our pastor, Jeff Schreve, married us and had us write down five things we loved about each other before the ceremony,” Sophie said. “Hearing those woven into the service made everything feel so personal and intentional.”

THE PROPOSAL

“Our proposal was definitely unforgettable,” Ambree said. “In the summer of 2024, Michael planned on proposing to me during a summer trip we had planned to the beach. However, a hurricane in the Gulf made us cancel our trip. We had already taken PTO and didn’t find out until the day before that we would have to cancel, so we booked a last-minute trip up to Broken Bow. Although most of the clothes we packed were for a sandy beach and not Broken Bow’s mountains and woods, we made do and headed up to the cabin we booked. That evening, I wanted to take a few pictures, so we walked down to the river next to our cabin, and that’s where he popped the question. Although it’s not what he originally planned, it was one of the most special moments of our lives.”

“My favorite part of our wedding day was our vows,” Ambree shared. “We opted to do private vows, so we woke up around sunrise and snuck out to a private spot near the outdoor altar. We were able to share our vows and have a moment of peace and togetherness before such a chaotic, fun day. Definitely a moment I’ll remember forever.”

“I had my mom be my matron of honor and a bridesmaid,” Ambree said. “We are extremely close, and when she married my step-dad when I was a teenager, she asked me to be her bridesmaid. It was so special getting to wedding-dress shop for her as just the two of us, and I stood by her on her big day. I couldn’t imagine her not standing beside me on mine, too.”

“I started working at Gracyn Elizabeth Bride at the beginning of 2024, and [owner] Ashley Carlow and my coworkers immediately became like family to me,” Ambree explained. “I am originally from the North Texas area and moved to Texarkana when I got offered a scholarship to continue my education and play volleyball for TAMUT. This is where I met my husband, who was playing baseball for the school. I was living four hours away from my family while we planned this wedding. I met so many amazing wedding vendors through working at Gracyn Elizabeth; Ashley Carlow’s daughter, Shelby Stephens, owns the

venue I got married at—which I had been obsessed with since I first saw it while attending a work event there. The florist was also a close friend of Ashley’s, and so the whole vendor staff felt like family. Everyone worked so seamlessly together, and they took such good care of me and the vision we had for our wedding. I made so many friendships through working at Gracyn Elizabeth. It was so reassuring to know that my friends at the boutique were the ones who steamed and transported my dress to the venue.”

“One of the reasons getting my dress at Gracyn Elizabeth Bride and getting married at Four Fifteen was so special for me is because of their missions,” Ambree said. “The name ‘Gracyn Elizabeth’ comes from the owner’s daughter’s name, who was sadly stillborn; she named the bridal store in her honor. The store takes donations of gowns that brides no longer want and uses them to create ‘angel gowns’ for other parents who experience infant loss. Likewise, the chapel that we got married in at Four Fifteen Estates is named ‘The Gracyn Chapel’ in her honor. My mom experienced four miscarriages after me and my brother were born, and although I was young, I remember the unimaginable feeling of loss. It was so special to me that we were able to honor that mission of loving on mothers who have endured such tragic events and in a way honor those sweet babies who are now in Heaven waiting on us.”

THE PROPOSAL

“We drove to his brother’s 90 acres, where we were supposed to be picking him and his wife up to go to dinner,” Kandle recalled. “Instead, Jared stopped in the middle of their long driveway. Hand in hand, he walked me to a spot he had set up in the middle of all these tall pecan trees and got down on one knee. After I said yes, I heard a huge crowd of people cheering. He had all of our friends and family hiding at his brother’s house, watching from a distance. We then drove up the drive, and I got out to find a full-on engagement party with all those closest to us.”

“My favorite part of the day was definitely those chapel doors opening and walking down the aisle in a full chapel of all our friends and family,” Kandle said. “Feeling the love from them and all the support on our special day, and seeing my husband standing by my son at the altar, teary-eyed, feeling nothing but peace and relief that I had finally found my soulmate.”

“Brother Jaimie Alexander from First United Methodist Church married us,” Kandle said. “He saw our journey from the beginning, and he really made it feel special and personal.”

“Amy Meadows, our worship leader, sang a song— ‘This is My Vow’—during our knot-tying ceremony, and it was so sweet and beautiful,” Kandle shared. “In the khe knot-tying ceremony, three cords become one, and it was personalized with scripture, our names, and the wedding date. We hung it in our dining room, and it’s such a beautiful piece to have in our home.”

“The chapel and reception hall were full with all of our friends and family,” Kandle said. “That meant so much to us—to have everyone we love celebrate with us.”

“Our reception was a party, thanks to DJ Lynn Roberts. He really had the perfect mix,” Kandle said. “Seeing all the kids on the dance floor having a blast, even the grandparents—it was definitely a memory that will last forever.”

THE PROPOSAL

“We began remodeling our first home together in March of 2024,” Abigail said. “We moved in on the same day as our housewarming party, July 27th. Surrounded by our family and friends, we began opening gifts. As we reached the very last gift, I had no idea it would be the most meaningful one of all. Instead of something for the house, it was a moment meant for us. Cedric got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him—turning a housewarming into the start of our forever. Not only was it our first night is our new home, it was also our first night being engaged.”

“It truly was the most perfect day,” Abigail said.

“One of my favorite moments of the entire day was my first dance with my husband,” Abigail said. “In that moment, even though the room was full, with all eyes on us, all I could feel was peace and a warm sensation; it felt like it was only me and him in the room. Our first true moment together as husband and wife, and I was flooded with all the memories we’d created together and everything that led up to this special day.”

“Looking at my wife and knowing that, out of all the paths life could’ve taken, we chose each other,” Cedric said. “In that moment, nothing else mattered but love, commitment, and the future we were beginning together. When I looked into her beautiful eyes, I got a crazy feeling, like it was the first day we ever locked eyes. As I was standing there with her, I felt safe, I felt chosen, and I felt complete.”

“The love I felt that day is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life,” Cedric said.

Honeymoon: Hot Springs, Arkansas (“We plan on taking our official honeymoon in the summer, possibly to Cancun, Punta Canta, or Thailand”, Abigail said.).

“Ben planned everything so perfectly, and I was surprised all weekend long,” Taylor recalled. “He booked a photographer to meet us at this beautiful lookout spot on Lake Tahoe, California. We walked out to the edge of this cliff with the sun setting behind us, and he popped the question. After the proposal and pictures, we drove to one of our favorite restaurants near Lake Tahoe for dinner. My parents, my sister, and Ben’s parents walked out once we got to our table. I was in utter shock and just so excited for them to be there to celebrate with us. The surprises kept coming: Ben also booked a huge cabin on Lake Tahoe for both of our families and our friends to stay in for the entire weekend together. He also rented a boat on Lake Tahoe for all of us to celebrate on the next day.”

“We had a couple of family members speak during our ceremony, which was very special to us”, Taylor shared. “My cousin Matthew Day read scriptures from the Bible, and Ben’s great-aunt Sister Rosina gave a beautiful blessing.”

“The main color we used at our wedding was pink because it is my great-grandmother’s favorite color. She will soon be 100 years old, and I am so grateful she was at our wedding,” Taylor said. “My flower bouquet was wrapped with my late great-grandfather’s handkerchief, which my great-grandmother still sleeps with every night.”

“The knife that we used to cut our wedding cake was used at Ben’s grandparents’ wedding, Ben’s parents’ wedding, and Ben’s brother’s wedding,” Taylor said. “All of our names and wedding dates are engraved on the knife.”

“The lace design on my wedding cake is the exact replica of the lace on my veil,” Taylor said. “The groom’s cake had impressive artwork that was customized to show Ben’s favorite hobbies, plus the Oklahoma State University logo, which is where Ben and I met. Go Pokes!”

“We went to Miami, Florida, for our yearly ‘couple’ trip,” Gabby said. “Gerod booked a photographer to take photos of us on the beach. This wasn’t a surprise to me, because we visit Destin yearly and always have the hardest time getting quality photos with just the two of us. We were silly during the photo shoot, as usual, then Gerod started acting nervous, and I started to suspect he was going to propose. After what felt like an eternity of awkward photos, he finally took a knee to propose in the sand, and we have the best photos to remember.”

“We did an elopement package at Four Fifteen Estates. I think it is a great option for couples who want to have a semi-traditional celebration but not break the bank,” Gabby said.

“My mother created our floral arch, and it may be my favorite part of the decor,” Gabby said.

“Having our wedding on Juneteenth felt incredibly meaningful. As a successful, educated Black couple, standing in front of our family and friends on a day that symbolizes liberation and possibility added an extra layer of significance to our commitment,” Gerod said. “We’ve worked hard to build the lives we have, and celebrating our love on a date rooted in strength, resilience, and Black excellence made the moment even more powerful.”

“Funnily enough, we had to choose Juneteenth to get the elopement package we wanted,” Gabby added, “but what started as a requirement ended up becoming the most aligned and beautiful blessing. It felt intentional, full-circle, and [will make our anniversary] even more special.”

THE PROPOSAL

“Nate asked me out on a dinner date, which was nothing out of the ordinary. We were both busy all day running errands, so I didn’t see him until he picked me up for our date. Looking back, he definitely seemed nervous, but at the time I didn’t think anything of it,” Kyla reflected. “We park downtown, and he says, ‘Let’s go grab a drink before dinner.’ So we start walking to this bar, and on the way, he stops in front of these beautiful decorations and gets down on one knee. His sister was nearby taking pictures. I was so shocked I didn’t think he was being serious until I saw the ring. It was the perfect proposal. He had all our family downtown to celebrate with us and take pictures. Then we went and had dinner, where there was champagne and roses waiting for us.”

“My favorite part of our wedding was our first touch, where we read our vows privately back-to-back,” Kyla said. “This moment was so special, and I really loved how intimate and private it was.”

“A special detail was having a toast with the same champagne glasses my grandparents used on their wedding day,” Kyla said.

“So many friends and family traveled to celebrate our special day with us,” Kyla said. “We felt so loved and blessed to be supported by so many people.”
