Dear Friends, As we venture into a new school year, I can’t help but reflect on the past two years. Although it was an unquestionably difficult time for many of us, it has also proven to be unexpectedly inspiring—and I feel privileged and honored to have been part of it with you. As we move forward into our next chapter, I am comforted knowing that our strong community of alumni, parents, faculty and friends will emerge from these times TOGETHER, finding our way onto a positive and transformative path that is uniquely Fountain Valley.

Baccalaureate ’21 The Class That Showed Up—and Showed Us All How to Rise

The Class of 2021 and Fine Arts faculty member Curtis Singmaster arrived at Fountain Valley School at the same time. Not only did Singmaster help show 50 nervous freshmen how to embrace change and welcome new opportunities, but he modeled that behavior himself. Over the past four years the teacher affectionately known as “Singy” by his students has become the head of the Arts Department, the lacrosse coach and a father. So it’s no surprise that the members of the Class of 2021 chose Singmaster as their faculty speaker during the May 21 Baccalaureate celebration. And Singmaster returned that respect, admiration and affection during his speech. “One of the most consistent questions I get when talking about FVS to other people is, ‘What makes Fountain Valley School so special to you?’ My answer every time is—the students,” he said. “In many ways, it is your class that has constantly reinforced and solidified my answer to this question, and I want you to know how much I cherish this bond and how much it has shaped my Fountain Valley experience.” That bond was even more apparent and significant during the last year, Singmaster said. 4

“At times, just showing up was all I could muster given the unrelenting challenges of COVID. Your class individually, collectively, in-person and from afar has shown me that who I am is enough and that just showing up is sometimes all that matters. You all have made me a better teacher and a better person, and allowed me to connect with you on a special level.” Singmaster pointed out that during the fear and uncertainty of the pandemic’s early days, the Class of 2021 helped set the tone for the entire FVS community. “You modeled what it meant to show up every day and keep pushing on,” he said. “But you did much more than simply going through the motions, and the net result was to keep us in motion, which at times was much harder than anyone but you actually knows. The constant ‘motion’ of showing up is exactly what we all needed Fountain Valley School

Senior Seminar Celebrates Community After a year when students gathered as much virtually as in person, the Class of 2021 was able to cap off their senior year as a community, working together in a spirit of service and selflessness during the Senior Seminar.

to get our brains moving, to stir up our creativity and to take on the unknown.” The Class of 2021 showed up in many ways, Singmaster said. They reinvented ways to connect and socialize. They adapted to new ways of learning. They even hosted a quarantine version of the Senior Dinner. “The way in which [the senior class] made the most of their situation and decided to show up with positivity and enthusiasm will forever be ingrained in my memory as a reminder that we get to choose the attitude we show up with,” he said. Singmaster closed his speech with some words of advice for the class he grew up with at Fountain Valley School. “For the future days where you are struggling to show up and you just want to sleep in—and there will be plenty— remind yourself of what you accomplished your senior year at Fountain Valley,” he said. “Keep showing up, and do it with an openness and attitude that will let the world come to you. Don’t wait to ‘figure it out;’ showing up will take care of that.”

This year’s Senior Seminar was held near the FVS Class of 1969 Mountain Campus in Buena Vista. Working with the Salida Ranger District, the seniors spent a week improving the hiking trails in the area near Brown’s Creek. “Although water is essential to Colorado forests, it follows the paths of least resistance, kind of like humans. When it runs down a hiking trail, it gouges out a path, turning a route into a rut. And so one of our jobs was to create drains that guide the water off the trails,” said Dave Reynolds, English department chair and leader of the Senior Seminar, during the 2021 Baccalaureate ceremony. The senior class sweated and grunted and created an impressive 35 new drains along the hiking trails, which they dubbed “Dane Drains.” They also blocked off side paths formed when hikers made new trails to avoid the water ruts. And they cleared the trails of the softball-sized rocks known as ankle rollers. “One of the great things about Senior Seminar and this kind of work is the physicality,” Reynolds said. “Students use their hands and muscles. They groan from hauling rocks—not from AP exams. And they learn the value of constructing something: One student excitedly said, ‘Wait until you see my drain.’ Not even thinking of filling in a bubble or wondering which multiplechoice answer is correct, they learned something about teamwork, hauling, lugging, hard work and constructing.” The Class of 2021 ended their Senior Seminar with the Candlelight Ceremony, which Head of School Will Webb referred to as the closing punctuation mark in the final chapter of each of their histories as students at Fountain Valley School. “The Candlelight Ceremony is a time-honored tradition that can be deeply reflective and emotional, and given all that these students and this community has endured, it was certainly so this year,” Webb said during the Baccalaureate ceremony. “I was incredibly moved by the self-knowledge, gratitude and grit that were common threads as students shared their stories and reflections. It felt right, it felt good and it almost felt, dare I say, ‘normal.’ Seniors, you have made an impression on me, and you have made your mark on this School during a defining chapter in our history, and I wish to thank you.”

AWARDS Arts Awards

The Breene Baggett Award is given in memory of Breene Baggett ’76, who loved the FVS theater. Breene’s father, Bryce Baggett, created the award “to be given to a student who, during their school career, made the greatest achievement or improvement in the dramatic arts.” This year’s award goes to Annie He, who has been dedicated to improving and honing her craft since she first set foot on campus. Annie’s passion for the theater is apparent in each class project and afterschool production. No matter the size of the role, she took every opportunity to learn and contribute to the FVS theater community.

The Photography Award is presented to students who use cameras as extensions of their mind, sharing with the FVS community the way they see and interpret the world. This year’s recipient, Charles Lloyd Hoskins, has demonstrated a passion for photography throughout his time at FVS. Known for his collection of vintage and unique cameras, Charles is passionate about image-making and quickly made himself at home in the FVS darkroom. During his time at FVS, Charles explored the world through landscapes and architecture, chronicling the changing face of the American West in his powerful work.

The Rumbough Award is given in memory of David Rumbough ’68. This award recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in the performing arts not only as performers, but also as behindthe-scenes workers. This year’s award recognizes Aaron Ryan Dorrance, who has been a valued member of the tech crew for the last five seasons. Although Aaron prefers to work out of the spotlight, he has continuously shined a bright light on others. Aaron’s dedication to training underclassmen and sharing his skills and knowledge leaves a lasting legacy of care and dedication to the theater program.

The Musical Award is presented to performers who delight the audience with their talent, and inspire fellow performers with hard work and high standards. This year’s honoree, Taylor Madison Harvey, has been dedicated to learning and improving her skills since her first pre-season days on campus. Regardless of the sometimes strange characters she’s been asked to play, Taylor is always willing to take big risks and dig into the role. Along with her talent, love for her work and enthusiasm for even the most difficult tasks, Taylor will be remembered for her ability to make any rehearsal a warm and welcoming environment.

The John W. Emery Music Award is given in memory of John W. Emery ’44, former member of the Board of Trustees and father of former dean of faculty and history teacher Jake Emery ’71. The Emery Award is presented annually to a student whose appreciation for music and creative potential has been awakened through the FVS music program. This year’s recipient, Ashley Jean Marie Smith, continued to develop her skill and passion for music through an independent study for piano instruction and a Capstone project centered around music and its global impact. Ashley was also the secondplace finisher in the 2021 Kurchinski music competition. The Kitson Music Award is presented to a musician who consistently demonstrates selfdiscipline, effort and devotion in the classroom, in the practice room and on the stage. This year’s honoree, Luke Stephenson Melamede, took advantage of every opportunity to better his musical skills, knowledge and appreciation. His insatiable curiosity and tenacity took him down many a creative rabbit hole, emerging each time with new insight and perspective. Luke’s teachers expect him to be a strong leader in music for years to come, whether in jazz, composition or a new genre of his own invention.

AWARDS Academic Awards The Creative Writing Award is given by the English Department to honor a student’s love of both poetry and prose, and is presented to talented writers in recognition of their creative excellence. This year’s honoree, Elisabeth Marie Jackson, writes with a keen and creative pen. As the leading poetic voice at FVS, Elisabeth not only wins awards, but also inspires others to write.

The Cum Laude Awards recognize Members of the graduating class and junior class who have distinguished themselves through their scholastic achievement, and thus have gained admission to the Cum Laude Society. Each year, the FVS Faculty Committee may elect up to 20 percent of the graduating class and up to 10 percent of the junior class to the Cum Laude Society. Current Faculty Committee members include Rob Gilbert, Addie Green, Rob Gustke, Sam Harrison, Mike Payne and Deb Prantl.

AWARDS Athletics Awards The Varsity Awards are given annually to Fountain Valley School students who, in the judgment of the coaches, have shown outstanding accomplishment in all-around athletic performance. Electa Houston Clark shows relentless determination on the court and the field. She is a two-year letter winner in volleyball and a three-year letter winner in soccer. She was captain of the JV volleyball team her sophomore year, playing a variety of positions to help the team become better as a whole. On the soccer field, she helped the team win the 2A Region 1 Championship and reach the 2A State Playoff Quarter Finals in 2019, and was named to the 2A Region 1 Black Forest League All Conference Honorable Mention team. Anh Phan Dao is a two-year varsity letter winner for soccer and volleyball. Phan only knows how to play one way—with 110 percent commitment and competitiveness. On the soccer field, he was instrumental in helping the program win the 2A Region 1 Championship and reach the Final Four of the CHSAA 2A State Playoffs. He played 24 games for FVS, with six goals and eight assists as a defender. He was also team captain his junior and senior year.

The Don Kardok Coach’s Award is given by the Varsity Club to a coach who exemplifies unwavering optimism and dedication to teaching, guiding, supporting and encouraging athletes. Like Coach Kardok, this year’s honoree, Britta Pestak, is enthusiastic, dependable and beloved by the community. After the late departure of a varsity head coach, Brita stepped in and organized a highly competitive team within only a few short weeks. Far beyond the athletic courts and fields, her love for students is found in an encouraging smile, endless hours of treatment, and a willingness to go above and beyond. The Riding Director’s Award is given by the FVS riding director to the student who has demonstrated the most all-around development within the program. This year’s honoree, Shirley Song, began her riding career at Fountain Valley her freshman year. Since then, she’s competed in Varsity Intermediate for IEA and cocaptained the IEA team. Shirley has always displayed a strong work ethic, desire to learn and commitment to sharing her passion for riding with others—including her younger brother back home. The Top Horseman Award is presented to lifelong students of horsemanship who are willing to fully utilize every opportunity to advance their

understanding and knowledge of the equine world. This year’s recipient, Blaine Marie Senden, faced a big challenge when she joined the FVS riding program her junior year. Changing programs can often be a huge hurdle for horse and rider, but Blaine was determined to succeed. She and her horse established a solid foundation and found new confidence, becoming active competitors in IEA and making it through the 2020 Zone 8 finals in the Varsity Open on the Flat. The Samuel Colgate Memorial Award is chosen by the Head of School. The award recognizes excellence in sportsmanship, loyalty and character, and was established in memory of Samuel Colgate ’31. This year’s recipient, Anh Phan Dao, is an inspirational role model who leads with grace. He is a regular on the Dean’s List, a member of the Froelicher Society and the recipient of the 2019 Newcomer Award from the Arts Department. Phan also co-created The Entrepreneurship and Business Club, a new student group that focuses on financial literacy. As a two-year residential assistant, Phan’s calm, respectful and responsive nature created a welcoming and productive environment. He maintained his good cheer despite the pandemic, which prevented him from going home to Vietnam for more than a year and a half. On the soccer field, Phan is a true leader and extremely versatile, playing many different positions. Phan truly models the traits that Francis Froelicher so admired in Sam Colgate: “Strong, Courageous, Faithful to Duty, and a Friend to All Who Knew Him.” Fountain Valley School

AWARDS Leadership Award The Fisher Howe Leadership Award recognizes outstanding, innovative student leadership. The award honors the School’s great friend and Life Trustee Fisher Howe, who served FVS for decades and lived to one week shy of his 101st birthday. This year’s recipients, Lindsey Marie Solo and Kimberly Ann Macdonald, worked hand-in-hand, side-by-side, for the past two years, advocating for their peers with dogged determination. They served as members of the FVS community council, residential life program and honor council, in addition to other leadership roles. They organized the Spirit Week Olympics, a fundraiser carwash to support student activities at off-campus locations, an oncampus voter registration drive, clothing swaps, rally points and the infamous GLOVID-21 Outdoor Dance Party. Most importantly, all of this was done in a way that was welcoming of all students, whether day or boarding, under or upperclassmen, and that created a sense of inclusivity and respect for others.

Commencement ’21 G.R.I.T.: Grace, Resiliency, Innovation, Trust acceptance and in understanding the necessity of all the changes you have had to endure this year. “R” is for your Resiliency—as the world has changed around you, you have adapted to the changes and, importantly, continued to move forward. “I” is for your Innovation—you have played a key role in finding ways to use innovative technology to allow your School to continue to offer top-flight education, and each of you has proved those ways work by continuing to learn while using them. “T” is for your Trust—trust in yourselves, your faculty, your friends, your families and your higher power to help you conquer the challenges placed before you.

On May 22, 2021, with 11 seniors watching from around the globe, Fountain Valley School held its first in-person commencement exercises in two years. “To the students who couldn’t be here, please know that we miss you tremendously. I hope that you and your classmates will find your way back here to the Prairie in five years for your first reunion, and the opportunity to all finally be together under this tent, so that we may celebrate accordingly!” Head of School Will Webb said as he kicked off the Commencement festivities. “You and your classmates have shown incredible grit, resilience, perseverance and character. Your leadership not only helped sustain you through the challenges we’ve faced, but also this entire community, and is an important part of why we are here today.”

President of the Board of Trustees Gregg Thatcher ’84 continued that theme in his commencement address. Thatcher’s ties to Fountain Valley run deep, making him uniquely qualified to put the Class of 2021’s commencement into perspective. His father, Darryl, is a graduate of the Class of 1955 and a former trustee. His twin brother, Dave, also graduated from FVS in 1984, followed by their brother, Drew, in 1988. Gregg’s son, Ben, is the most recent FVS alum, graduating in 2017. Thatcher said that, fittingly, it takes a four-letter word to symbolize the Class of 2021’s contributions to FVS: grit. “Grit is, literally, hard stuff,” he said. Taken letter by letter, he explained how the word grit applies to the Class of 2021. “G” is for your Grace—while it was never easy, you demonstrated grace in

It will serve you well as the landscape continues to change, and resiliency and adaptability will be ever more important life skills,” Thatcher told the graduates. “Remember—you have experienced how burdens can become gifts. Use the burdens this year has handed you to craft gifts that you use for the rest of your lives.” Senior Class Speakers Kimberly Macdonald and Ezra Potts certainly haven’t been short of G.R.I.T. during their time at Fountain Valley. But they used their commencement speech to focus on the lighthearted aspects of a senior year interrupted by COVID-19. “Our class had a test EVERY Monday,” Potts said. “First, you line up at the back of the old gym. You take a test tube, unscrew the cap, brush your tongue against your teeth, and … (jazz hands). Our class has been tested like no other.” Fountain Valley School

The pair also did tag-team jokes about the benefits of quarantines. “I think it’s safe to say we learned a lot about ourselves during these quarantine periods,” Macdonald said. Potts responded: “Last quarantine, I improved my procrastination skills. I still haven’t turned in my calc final.” Macdonald’s rejoinder: “Two quarantines ago, I was able to catch up on ‘Schitt’s Creek.’” After thanking their teachers and parents, Macdonald and Potts summed up their class. “The class of 2021 is like … extra guac in your Chipotle. The bass drop in ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb.’ Finding a wizard man Jenkins in your backpack after a long day of school. Santi’s juicy ... burgers. Ailer paying for your Snapple at the RK.” Webb closed the commencement exercises with a message for Fountain Valley School’s newest alumni. “I hope that you will recognize and embrace the opportunities that await you, knowing that you have accomplished so much and that—equipped with the G.R.I.T. that Mr. Thatcher described—you truly are empowered to write your own histories on the blank pages of possibility that await you in college and in life,” he said. Webb cited the incredible breadth of interests in the Class of 2021. Their Capstone projects range from real estate development to disempowering racism; spearfishing to sonatas; climate change to creating a Michelin 5-star menu; immigration law to the importance of financial literacy. This class has the ability to help change the world, he said. “Put to use the tools you have gained here, lean on the foundation you have built here and let the core values of Fountain Valley School guide you in all that you do,” Webb said as the opening chords of the recessional song, “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5, began. “Be courageous, be compassionate, be curious, be self-reliant and be openminded. Always.”

Passion is Imperative for Commencement Speaker Lang Fisher ’98

Joking that as an old woman, her job is to impart advice to young graduates, Fisher said, “the most helpful way to do this is to give you a detailed list of my greatest mistakes since leaving Fountain Valley. Of which there are many.” Mistake number one was majoring in international politics in college. “Many of you are probably wondering: Why is that a mistake? Seems like a noble enough field. You could be a diplomat, or work for an NGO or be like a ‘Bourne Identity’ spy. You’re certainly ripped and muscular enough, Lang,” she said. Fisher said she thought she had chosen her major out of practicality, “but there’s nothing practical about doing something you don’t care about. If you pursue something because of someone else’s expectations of you, or choose a route that isn’t your heart’s desire, you’ll end up phoning it in and doing mediocre work, and feeling unsatisfied.”

class, her class also faced obstacles. “When I was at Fountain Valley, there was a miller moth infestation. So, it’s sort of the same thing. I’ve had my struggles too,” she said.

“There are so many teen movies and television shows, including the one I created, that glamorize and romanticize the final year of high school,” Fisher told the Class of 2021 during her commencement speech. “But you know there’s nothing like a global pandemic to end your high school career with a bang.”

“I’m just kidding. You guys win. You win.”

On the positive side, quarantines and lockdowns can make an already close group of classmates even closer, Fisher said. “And as you move into the next chapter of your life, whether it’s college or something else, I hope you can lean into your friends at Fountain Valley. I’ve kept my FVS friends close for decades.”

On the other hand, she said, “If you choose something that you’re legitimately passionate about, you’ll work hard on it. And it is so important to work hard on something. Because that is how you find out what you’re actually capable of. It’s how you will ultimately feel proud of yourself. Which is everything.” Fisher’s second mistake occurred after her college graduation. After months of sending out resumes, she finally got an offer to be an entry-level sales assistant. “I should have leapt at the opportunity,” she said. “Instead, I told them I would think about it, and eventually declined the next day. It didn’t seem fancy or artsy enough for me. And certainly with my sparkling personality, something more exciting was bound to come along. It didn’t.” Fountain Valley School

Entitlement is a killer, Fisher said. “You’re all very special. But you’re not so special that you don’t have to do some grunt work before landing your dream job. Your goal is the dream job, and you take a million annoying, crappy jobs to get there.” Which leads to Lang’s third mistake—the first TV show pilot she wrote bombed. “I expected to be an amazing writer right out of the gate. I wanted to walk into the room and blow everyone away with amazing one-liners and cool story ideas. But I didn’t. Obviously because I was new and inexperienced,” said Fisher, who wrote for “30 Rock,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Mindy Project” before creating “Never Have I Ever.”

You’re going to make a million choices in life, and some you’ll regret, she told the graduates.

D on’t stress about them. They’ll get you where you’re supposed to be going. Some people are so scared of being bad at their dreams that they don’t even try it. Being afraid of failure is the quickest way to failure, my friends. Perfect is the enemy of good.”

Fisher concluded with a heartfelt piece of advice for the Class of 2021: Find something good to do every day, because the world needs it. “We are living in one of the most vitriolic times in human history. My challenge to you is to try to infuse everything you do with humanity and kindness and, frankly, honesty,” she said. “Stability and compassion are as vital to the future of the human race as anything else. There needs to be more empathy and understanding right now. And hopefully, you are the generation to bring it.”

AWARDS J. Philo Nelson Award Created through the generosity of former Trustee Kit Bedford and her husband, Peter Bedford, parents of Erik Bedford ’89 and grandparents of Owen Bedford ’16, the J. Philo Nelson Award honors Kit’s father, J. Philo Nelson, by recognizing the highest levels of teaching commitment among the Fountain Valley School faculty. This year, there are two award recipients.

David Brudzinski, known to his students as “Mr. Bru,” joined the FVS mathematics faculty 11 years ago. Mr. Bru, who retired at the end of the 202021 school year, was beloved by his students for his engaging, compassionate and innovative teaching. Once, he made an algebra lesson into a crime scene investigation, placing laminated paper bones from several bodies in a grassy area that was roped off with yellow tape. Students were charged with measuring the bones and identifying the missing person. Another decidedly messy lesson was “egg roulette,” in which students learned about probability by smashing eggs onto their heads. Some eggs were hard-boiled and some were not, creating a truly experiential learning opportunity. Mr. Bru also shared his love of the outdoors with students. His leadership of the FVS outdoor education program has introduced countless students to the wilderness and wonder of the School’s magnificent Rocky Mountain setting.

Virginia Herndon has been on the very front line of Fountain Valley School’s COVID risk management and response. As the School’s director of student health services, she’s led the FVS community through a year and a half of challenges. She also took on an entire new set of responsibilities, including being the School’s liaison with the El Paso County Health Department, taking a crash course in epidemiology, guiding Fountain Valley’s COVID task force, overseeing the conversion of the old gym into a COVID ward, establishing and managing a robust testing program, and creating calm in the COVID storm for worried parents and students. Virginia has been superhuman and indefatigable throughout the entire experience, facing myriad tasks and challenges with perseverance, grace and a steady, subtle sense of humor—which is just what the doctor ordered.

AWARDS Highest Honors Sidney S. Bunting Award

In memory of Sidney S. Bunting, former faculty member of Fountain Valley School, this award is given by the Head of School to a student who embodies the qualities Sidney most admired— scholarship, intellect and culture. This year’s recipient, Leo Li, is a consummate learner. He has been on the Dean’s List every semester and is a member of the Froelicher and Cum Laude Societies. Leo is also as dedicated an athlete as he is a student. He went from learning tennis on the JV squad his freshman year to being elected captain of the varsity team his junior and senior years. Leo has had a major impact on the culture at Fountain Valley School as well. He was a member of the Student Cultural Organization for three years, organizing international student workshops and encouraging open-mindedness by modeling it himself. He also co-created The Entrepreneurship and Business Club, a student group that focuses on financial literacy. Leo was a compassionate residential assistant for two years, an Admission Ambassador all four years and a Community Council representative for two years. Even more remarkably, Leo accomplished all of this under the duress of not being able to go home or see his family for three years. Thankfully, he was able to return home his senior year, and accepted this award virtually.

This award is given by the faculty to a student whose contributions to the Fountain Valley School community reflect the qualities Mrs. Emery admired most: educational commitment, integrity, sensitivity to the needs of others, warmth, good humor and enthusiasm. This year’s honoree, Ezra Walter Ehrhardt Potts, is a day student from Beulah, Colorado. Ezra has been on the Dean’s List every semester and is a member of the Froelicher and Cum Laude Societies. He is also a Summit Scholar, class president his junior and senior years, Admission Ambassador, Honor Council member and a peer leader. A true renaissance man, Ezra excelled in climbing, mountain biking and theater all four years at FVS. Ezra is remembered by both students and faculty for his selflessness, joyfulness, kindness, and ability to model healthy, inclusive and inquisitive behavior. His advisor, Arts Department Chair Curtis Singmaster, says: “During my 20 years in education, I cannot think of another student who has organically impacted a community and me in such an honest and uplifting way. In class and in life, he understands the value in being open to unforeseen potential. He has truly made the most of his time here.”

This award is presented in memory of founding headmaster Francis M. Froelicher, and honors the senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, best represents the qualities for which we would like Fountain Valley School to be known. This year’s recipient, Kimberly Ann Macdonald, has been called a “rock star” more than once, including in her award nomination: “From the dorm to the volleyball court, from organizing major events to encouraging everyone around her to be positive every day; from maintaining excellent grades in all classes to being a proactive member of the community, she is a rock star.” In her three years at FVS, Kim grew into a strong leader, an impressive scholar, a creative artist and an all-around athlete. She has been on the Dean’s List every semester, is a member of the Cum Laude and Froelicher Societies, and is a Summit Scholar. She played varsity volleyball for three years and was team captain her senior year. She also served as a residential assistant for two years, and was this year’s Community Council president. Throughout the difficult circumstances of this last school year, Kim has been a beacon of positivity and encouragement, energizing the community every day and leading meaningful discussions to help others cope with the challenges of virtual learning.

AWARDS Department & Leadership Awards The Langdon Mathematics Award is presented in honor of Robert C. Langdon, the founding math instructor at Fountain Valley School. This year’s recipient, John Wang, truly represents the ideal math student—serving as an excellent role model and an intellectual classroom leader who excels in the School’s most challenging courses. John’s curiosity about mathematics has also inspired them to pursue independent research in a wide variety of topics. The F. Martin Brown Science Award was created in honor of F. Martin Brown, a distinguished scientist, naturalist and founding member of the Fountain Valley School faculty. This year’s award goes to Morné George VanZyl in recognition of his passionate curiosity for learning. He has challenged himself with many advanced science classes, including AP courses and electives in biology, chemistry and physics. He showcased all of these skills and his enthusiasm for engineering by building a Go Kart for his Senior Capstone project. The Campbell English Award is given in honor of Alexander Sloan Campbell, Fountain Valley’s founding English Department master. The award recognizes a student who excels in all areas of English studies. This year’s recipient, Lindsey Marie Solo, eagerly embraces the nuances of critical reading and writing. She brings an infectious enthusiasm to class discussions, inspiring those around her to be better readers and writers. The Languages Award recognizes significant achievement in the study of world languages. This year’s recipient, Lillian Jewel Ryan, studied both Advanced French and Spanish during her junior year. After continuing her Spanish studies independently over the summer, she advanced an entire level into Spanish III her senior year. And if that weren’t enough, in the fall of her senior year, Lily also worked on a directed study in French geopolitics.

The Penrose History Prize is given in honor of one of the School’s first benefactors, Spencer Penrose. This year’s recipient, Lillian Jewel Ryan, has consistently raised the level of intellectual discourse in her history classes, benefiting all of those around her. Her writing demonstrates sophistication and attention to detail, with an effective approach of providing convincing evidence and thorough analysis. The Hunter Frost Drama Award honors former Fountain Valley School faculty member Hunter Frost, and recognizes excellence in an actress or actor. This year’s recipient, Ezra Walter Ehrhardt Potts, makes the theater department a happier and more understanding, rational and kind space. He is accepting of others and encourages everyone to thrive in their own uniqueness. Each choice Ezra makes on stage is a gift to the audience, and he’s famous for weaving gripping and hilarious scenes. The Robinson Art Award is given by the Fine Arts Department in honor of founding arts faculty member Boardman Robinson. This year’s recipient, Elisabeth Marie Jackson, has made a home in the Art Barn for four years. Her detailed and whimsical work reads like a story, provoking playful contemplation. Elisabeth doesn’t confine herself to any specific medium, but instead exemplifies the endless potential that comes from creating a process that’s inquisitive and open to the unknown. The Heb Newman Award honors the longtime former football coach and athletic director, and is given to the student who best exemplifies the FVS athletic ideals of competitive desire, confidence and sportsmanship. This year’s recipient, Kellyn Ann Pattee, is a four-year letter winner in both volleyball and soccer, and a three-year letter winner in basketball. Not only did she help lead the soccer team to regional championships and state playoff appearances in 2018 and 2019, but she also took pride in mentoring and encouraging her younger teammates. Jamie Logan ’65 began her climbing career at Fountain Valley, and is considered a pioneer and legend in the world of North American free climbing. Her most significant achievements include the first free ascents of the Crack of Fear above Estes Park in 1966, the Diamond on Long’s Peak in 1976, and Mount Robson in British Columbia in 1978. The latter ascent was so challenging that it wasn’t repeated for 30 years. Logan was also an early advocate for clean climbing, using passive protection gear that doesn’t harm rock faces.

goals and total points. He was co-captain of the hockey team his senior year; led the team in goals, assists, and total points; and earned all-state honors. And if that weren’t enough, Marquis was also cocaptain of the soccer team his senior year, earning all-conference honors.

Chris Ellis ’06 attended Fountain Valley his junior and senior years. He was a two-time captain of the soccer team and a oneyear captain of the basketball team. As a senior, he was named MVP of both teams. Ellis set a record for basketball assists, and was honored with the 2006 Varsity Award. He continued his soccer career at Colorado College, where he was named to the prestigious Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Honor Roll from 2008 through 2010.

Sam Marquis ’79 is a stellar multisport athlete who won the FVS Varsity Award his senior year. He played hockey, lacrosse, and soccer at FVS, and continues to play and coach to this day. Marquis earned all-state honors in lacrosse both years he attended FVS, and also led the team in Fountain Valley School

Alumni Awards Steering Committee and the Development Committee. He’s also the class agent for the Class of 1971, keeping the members connected to the School and maintaining their special relationship with the Colorado Springs School for Girls’ Class of 1971. In Fountain Valley’s first try at coeducation, the two schools coordinated classes. The experiment was so successful that years later, FVS became permanently coed.

Arts Guild

David Cole ’86 is a renowned metalsmith whose work ranges from large-scale public art to fine jewelry. After graduating from FVS, Cole served as conservator at the Henry Ford Museum. He also designed a handrail for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hanna House at Stanford University, and has produced metalwork for other historic buildings on campus. Cole is the founder of Kinematic Labs and a senior adjunct professor at the California College of the Arts.

Lily Wilson ’91 began her music career when she was in college in Spain, and continued it in Los Angeles. An accomplished singer-songwriter, Wilson won the 2007 LA Music Award for Best Female Vocal Performance in the Adult Contemporary category. Wilson’s music blends folk, country and pop genres. She has performed and recorded with a variety of prominent musicians, including Melissa Etheridge and Kenny Loggins, and has played at several Fountain Valley Reunions.

Distinguished Alumni The Distinguished Casa Serena Society Member Award honors significant and dedicated leadership giving to the School. This year’s honoree, Neil Albert ’71, has been a member of the Casa Serena Society for more than two decades. He served as a Fountain Valley Trustee from 2008 to 2014, leading the Strategic Plan B u l l e t i n

The Young Alumni Award is presented to distinguished alumni who have graduated in the last 20 years. This year’s recipient, Dempsey Simonis ’11, is dedicated to giving back to the educational institutions that contributed to her growth. Simonis is currently assistant director of annual giving at Columbia University’s School of Engineering. She’s also on the alumni board of her alma mater, The College of Wooster. Simonis is an inaugural member of Fountain Valley’s Young Alumni Trustee Class, and currently serves as co-chair of the Advancement Committee. She’s also an avid and dedicated volunteer for the FVS Admission Department, and was the Senior Dinner speaker for the Class of 2021.

Alumni Awards Distinguished Alumni continued

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to alumni who exemplify FVS principles and values in their profession, or through direct service to the local, national or international community. This year’s recipient, Latham Thomas ’98, is a longtime advocate for women, children, birth workers and marginalized communities around the world. She is the founder of Mama Glow, a wellness and lifestyle movement for women in their childbearing years. A yogini, doula to the stars and selfdescribed “self-care sorcerous,” Thomas has written three books and is one of Oprah’s SuperSoul 100 leaders who help people live more intentional lives.

The Elizabeth Froelicher Smith Distinguished Service Award is presented for exceptionally meritorious service to Fountain Valley School. This year’s honoree, Jake Emery ’71, has received many FVS 22

awards over the years as both a student and 30-year faculty member. This award recognizes his vital role as the current School archivist, and celebrates his special bond with Betty Froelicher, who was the first female to graduate from Fountain Valley. Up until 1982, she served as the School’s archivist. Since taking over that role, Emery has categorized and organized the School’s fascinating history. Emery serves as the School’s greatest source of historical perspective, bringing patience and perspective to preserving FVS lore.

The Lewis Perry Jr. Alumni Award is given to an alumna or alumnus who has provided conspicuous leadership in support of FVS during the previous year. Because 2020 presented so many unique challenges, the School is honoring two alumni with the 2021 award. Dan Tyler ’51, P ’76, ’80, ’96, GP ’11, ’12 proposed early in the COVID pandemic that the School establish a contingency fund to help weather unplanned expenses. Tyler developed the framework and verbiage for the FVS Resiliency Fund, which helped ensure that the School remained strong, with its financial foundation intact. Tyler contributed a significant gift to the fund, and other supporters were equally responsive. As of

May 2021, the Resiliency Fund has raised $2.8 million. Tyler was also a FVS Trustee from 1995 to 2002, and chaired the Capital Campaign that financed the building of Sinclaire, Figge and Ballantine residence halls; renovated Penrose and Sage halls; and wired the entire campus for internet.

Theresa Sheh ’88 is a current member of the FVS Board of Trustees, and chairs the Finance Committee. Sheh, who has served as senior vice president and head of corporate development at FTD and chief corporate development officer and senior vice president at Eastman Kodak, provides valuable business acumen and real-world perspective to the Board. The School has greatly benefitted from her thoughtful guidance in addressing the financial impact of the pandemic.

Giving Day ’21 Record Number of Donations Help Students Reach the Summit

The 2021 Fountain Valley School Giving Day was held on May 8, in conjunction with Reunion Weekend. As alumni and friends of FVS tuned in for the Reunion Weekend performances, they also heard from a freshman and a senior who took very different paths to Fountain Valley. But although Samantha Marris and Ezra Potts come from diverse backgrounds, like many FVS students before them, they benefitted from merit-based Summit Scholarships that are funded in part by Giving Day donations. And that’s helped empower them to, as founding Headmaster Francis Froelicher said, “write your own histories.” “I hope the stories of Samantha and Ezra, juxtaposed to your own lives’ paths, will inspire pride in this place, and that you will see common patterns among all that intersect here at your School,” Head of School Will Webb said as he introduced Marris and Potts.

That’s how Samantha Marris began her Giving Day ’21 speech. “You may be wondering why I introduced myself in Navajo,” said Marris, who is a member of the Dine tribe in Red Mesa, Arizona, and the Choctaw tribe of Durwood, Oklahoma. “Well, growing up, my masan, which is Navajo for grandma, always told me that when I introduce myself to state my clan and my native name. Growing up in a Native American household, I was told to take pride in my culture because it is who I am. Admittedly, that was a bit harder said than done.”

Growing up in Oklahoma, Marris felt comfortable enough to dress in ways that reflected her culture. But when she moved to Colorado for middle school, she started feeling insecure about her ethnicity and background. After hearing her classmates whisper about the tecloth—a hair tie made of wool—she wore, Marris was devastated. She stopped wearing her tecloth, beaded earrings, and moccasins. But even though she felt “whitewashed,” she made sure to keep her culture alive by attending powwows, making jewelry, learning her native language, and keeping in contact with her family and friends on the reservation. When it came time to choose a high school, Marris listened to her mother, Brittney Marris, who graduated from FVS in 2005. “She told stories of her time here and how she felt that she could express her Native American heritage through Fountain Valley School

activities such as Unity Day or being a part of groups such as SCO,” Marris said. When Marris started her FVS application process, she didn’t shy away from representing her culture. “I wore beaded earrings, turquoise and a tecloth to my interviews. I talked about my time on the reservation and about the powwows I attended,” she said. “I finally felt that I could take pride in my culture around other people.” Marris was ecstatic when she got the phone call telling her she had not only earned a place in the class of 2024, but also a Summit Scholarship as a day student. Now, she’s dedicated to representing her culture at FVS. She performed a Native American hoop dance during the 2021 Unity Day, and hopes to host a powwow in the future with her fellow classmates from the Crow reservation in Montana.

Since then, one of those things has changed. “But Fountain Valley has given me a lot more than just an improved taste in haircuts,” Potts said during his Giving Day ’21 speech. In his four years as a day student at FVS, Potts became a highly acclaimed member of the School community, garnering multiple awards. But the effort and dedication necessary to achieve those accolades started years before he first stepped on campus. “When I was in sixth grade, my sister got into Fountain Valley, putting the pressure on me to also go. With one kid already enrolled at FVS, my application for the Summit Scholarship was very important,” he said. Potts spent many months of his eighth-grade year applying for the scholarship, and when he found out he had received it, “I involuntarily did a full ‘Breakfast Club’ fist in the air,” he said. “Getting the scholarship took a huge

stressor off of my family and led me to some of the memories and experiences I hold most dearly.” Potts said the most important thing he learned during his time at Fountain Valley is that there’s a single concept that underlies all of FVS’s core values: awareness. “It is the ability to look at my surroundings, my setbacks and achievements, and understand that I have the ability to look at those events any way I choose,” he said. “FVS has taught me that every situation has both positives and negatives, and I always have a choice in how to look at them. Any negative experience can be seen as a stepping stone on one’s way to success, and any success can be seen as something to build off of. Although I am just one student and I have no fountain of knowledge, Fountain Valley has given me more than an education; it has given me a way to see the world.” Potts believes this is an opportunity everyone should have, regardless of financial status. “If you choose to donate this Giving Day, it won’t fix the U.S. education system and it probably won’t get a bowl cut off of some unfortunate soul, but it will help to give someone else the amazing opportunity which is Fountain Valley,” he said. 25

We Are Back!

Whether it’s the first or the 101st time, nothing can recreate rounding the bend onto the Fountain Valley School grounds and seeing the prairie sprawling out toward the foothills. This year, every student and faculty and staff member was able to personally feel the power of the prairie as they headed back to school. Returning students reveled in the opportunity to once again play competitive sports, participate in afternoon activities, and meet old and new friends at back-to-school barbecues. International students celebrated their return to inperson learning, reacquainting themselves with their favorite campus corners and crannies after months away. Faculty and staff found joy in seeing so many smiling faces in their classrooms and gathered in the dining hall and dorms. While robust safety precautions are still in effect, the opening of the 2021-22 school year delivered a resounding message from the FVS community: We’re here, we’re back and our spirit WILL NOT be quelled.

OPENING OF SCHOOL 2021-22

What is Back to School like for you this year? Annie Wrubel ’24 Last year, coming to Fountain Valley as a freshman during COVID was stressful. There was a lot of change to the school environment, and the fact that that’s changed so much already from last year is incredible. It’s also nice to just get back to school. Summer’s fun, but it’s exhausting not doing anything! So I’m looking forward to the exhausted-doing-something way of life.

Josh Alford, English Faculty I think for me a big part is getting back to the basics, like how do we ensure kids are engaged, how do we make sure they’re feeling like they have an opportunity to catch up on anything they may have missed last year. In my courses, we tend to start hard and finish easy, but I think that’s not necessarily the approach we need to take right now. Instead, let’s just start. Start thinking again. Start writing again. Let the conversation go where the class wants to take it. I’m not starting my class off with a big, gnarly essay this year. We’re saving some of those things for when we’re back in the groove.

Cristina Fernandez ’23 I feel like it’s easier this year to reach out to new people, make new friends, get better grades in classes. But this year is also a little bit tougher than last year, because there’s new ways to do things and new rules to get used to—especially for day students.

OPENING OF SCHOOL 2021-22

Chase Wallace ’23 It’s a semi culture shock. My first week was a lot harder than I expected it to be, a lot more tiring, even though there weren’t that many assignments. It reminded me of my first week of freshman year. I’m not sure why—maybe it’s just the shift from a COVID year plus summer to a normal year.

Suzanne Tibbits P ’24, Science Faculty It’s been phenomenal for me. Last year was my first year at Fountain Valley, and it was very isolating. I missed the interactions with colleagues and seeing the kids hanging out the way they do normally, just being kids. It was a hard way to join a new school. This year, it’s a 180-degree turnaround. I’ve really gotten to experience the community and see what everyone had raved about. Everyone talks about the magic here, and now I see the magic. I’m glad I held on.

Brett Rubenstein, Chair of Science Department Community is such an important part of Fountain Valley, so it’s nice to have that back. Morale is way up from last year. I think we’re all excited to be back in person, despite the fact that we’ve still got some big COVID challenges. It just feels good to be together in the classroom and outside, doing athletics.

Jack Li ’22 It’s a miracle. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to come back for my last year of studying. I was the only student who did a whole semester of synchronous learning last year, which meant I had classes in the middle of the night. So I love being able to study in the sunshine this year, and being able to be outside doing the things I love.

Mia Sanchez ’22 I feel optimistic, which feels weird. I think we’re off to a really good start. It feels like things are back to normal and we know how to do that while being safe. The dining hall is back to normal, which shouldn’t be as big of a deal as it is, but it feels so good to be able to eat with my friends. Last year, everyone was together, but we were kind of alone. This year I feel like we’ve got pretty much everything back.

Addie Ray ’22 It’s really exciting because we have afternoon activities and weekend activities again. The thing I’m looking forward to most this year is sports. I’m a swimmer, and not being able to compete and be with my team last year was a sore spot for me.

Faith Hutt ’22 I’m looking forward to graduating. I’m excited to see what it feels like to be an adult after I leave high school, and just to be more independent than I am now. I’m also looking forward to seeing my friends more in person this year.

René Aronson Cajas ’22 I’m from Costa Rica, and I’m very happy to see all of the international students back on campus. It’s exciting to meet all of the new students. I have a lot of leadership opportunities this year, so I’m very excited about that. I’m also psyched that the climbing competitions are back on and that I’ll be captaining the climbing team.

Brody Rountree ’22 I’m a new senior, coming here from Winnetka, Illinois. I came here for the mountains and to spend time outside—I can do that a lot more here than at home. At Fountain Valley, I’m on the climbing team and the mountain biking team. I raced cyclocross and BMX back home, and I’m excited to race here in the mountains.

Helena Jones ’25 I’m meeting lots of new people and am trying to memorize names and faces—plus where all of my classes are. It’s definitely different going from a public school to a boarding school and living on campus. Everyone just seems to care a lot more here.

FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/CONTINUING EDUCATION/AWARDS The Ballantine Family Endowment created by Arthur and Morley Ballantine, and continued by their sons Richard ’64 and William ’68, provides annual grants for faculty study and research. The Robert D. Cole Endowment for Faculty Development was established by the family of the late Robert D. Cole, who was a trustee and parent of David Cole ’86. Through their

funding of faculty travel, the Cole family seeks to enrich the experiences that faculty can bring to the classroom. The Gates/FVS Teacher Education Fund created by the Gates Family Foundation of Denver, provides annual funding of faculty research and independent study. The J. Philo Nelson Endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bedford, parents of Erik ’89 and grandparents of Owen ’16, in honor of Mrs. Bedford’s father. Annual income is used to provide an award for outstanding teaching to a member of the FVS faculty as selected by the Head of School.

FACULTY SUPPORT The F. Martin Brown Fund for the Teaching of Science honors one of Fountain Valley School’s founding faculty members, who served with distinction from 1930 through 1973. Income from the fund provides annual support of teaching salaries in the sciences. The fund was established in 1992 by a gift from Morgan Sinclaire ’35 and his wife, Esther. The Lane Faculty Family Endowment was established by Nelson and Neecee Lane, parents of Phelps ’98 and Tennessee ’00, and supports the educational fund for children of Fountain Valley School faculty. The Lewis Perry Endowment was established by numerous friends of Fountain Valley’s third Headmaster. Annual income is used to support the humanities and endows a teaching chair for a member of the humanities faculty selected by the Head of School.

PROGRAMS The Gardner Lynch Gordon Carney Restricted Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Carney II in memory of their son, Gardner ’92. The fund supports the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute at Fountain Valley School, which provides training, research and literature on the pedagogy of leadership. The Institute’s annual Leadership Lab takes place each summer at Fountain Valley School, and several FVS faculty have participated in this training. Brian Scott Chandler ’95 Memorial Fund was established by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Chandler ’65, and his brother, Bob Chandler ’88, to support the performing arts and other programs. The Deck Cheney Endowment was established in 2007 to sustain the excellence of the riding program in perpetuity. Named in tribute to the legendary riding master who served from 1944 to 1975, the fund’s income supports the riding program, facilities and equipment. The Dominique Dunne Memorial Fund supports Fountain Valley School’s annual film competition. It was established by family and friends of Dominique Dunne ’77. The John W. Emery ’44 Memorial Endowment Fund was established by Jean Jackson Emery in honor of her late husband and father of John W. (Jake) Emery Jr. ’71, in recognition of his lifelong appreciation of music. Annual income supports the promotion of creativity in the School’s music department and benefits one or more students in music. Henry Poor Endowment The Headmaster Henry B. Poor Endowment Fund was created to honor the commitment of Mr. Poor in supporting students of diversity, spirituality and character in order that they have the opportunity to experience a unique, college preparatory education at Fountain Valley School. This endowment fund contributes to the financing of qualified students’ tuition and other expenses incurred at FVS that are not covered by existing programs. The Charles Kurchinski Annual Music Competition Endowment Fund was established by Michael Dively to sponsor a student music competition that awards cash prizes to the top three musicians in the vocal and instrumental categories. Christopher Bancroft ’69 Coach Kardok Scholarship Fund Donald “Coach” Kardok P ’73, ’75, ’77 arrived as a faculty member in the fall of 1969 and from then on he made Fountain Valley School his home. The Kardok Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 with an initial leadership gift from an alumnus/former trustee along with matched funds from the School’s endowment to ensure that FVS is within reach for bright and dedicated students who desire to expand their intellectual horizons.

Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship Endowment Established by current and former trustees, the Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship provides a Fountain Valley School education to a qualified and deserving student who demonstrates need. The intent is to transform the recipient’s life through the FVS experience. This scholarship honors the extraordinary vision of the School’s founder, Elizabeth Sage Hare, who was determined to establish a great progressive school in the West. General Scholarships Endowment Rich Weber P ’21 James W. Laird Revocable Living Trust Learning Center Scholarship Endowment The Learning Center Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by an FVS parent to support deserving students who benefit from the Learning Center at Fountain Valley School of Colorado. This scholarship provides opportunities for qualified students to receive study assistance, learning and academic assessment, individualized academic support, tutoring and educational skill development. The Jane and Charles F. Emery ’38 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Jane and Chuck Emery. The purpose is to provide financial support to a student who could not otherwise attend Fountain Valley School. Sarah McPhee The Scott Family Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James R. Annual earnings provide merit scholarship support for a student at Fountain Valley. The Theda Clark Smith Endowment was established in 1990 by Tamblin C. Smith ’45. Fund income provides scholarship assistance to students from Wisconsin’s Fox River Valley.

STUDENT RECOGNITION The Hunter Frost Theatre Award Fund was established in 1999 by former headmaster Lewis Perry Jr. and Hoyt Bacon ’69 in honor of Mr. Hunter Frost, Fountain Valley’s performing arts director from 1969-1982 (also faculty 1949-1952 and 1966-1982). The award is given each year to an outstanding senior actor.

The Barker Wardrop Memorial Fund was established through an anonymous gift in 1983 in memory of Barker ’72, to be awarded to an FVS tennis player who combines skill with good nature and persistence, qualities for which Barker’s classmates especially remember him.
