The Disappearance of Thomas Medlin (1)

The Disappearance of Thomas Medlin

THOMAS MEDLIN, a 15 year old boy, went missing recently as of January 9th, 2026. Thomas Medlin lives in Long Island, however, he was last seen at Grand Central Station after school where there was a train that would go to New York city. Medlin’s parents shared that Thomas was never the kid to misbehave, and the fact that he would “run” out of school to take a train out of town was very out of character for him.

Upon discovering he had an alternate Roblox game account to bypass certain safety features, his parents believed he left with the intention of meeting up with a stranger he met online. However, after investigating his social media accounts and online gaming accounts, the Suffolk County police Department found no evidence of grooming or trafficking, and began to question other reasons for his behavior.

Upon two weeks of no conclusions, the family becomes agitated with the police investigation's lack of findings. After school, Thomas found himself on a train to Manhattan, and a camera caught him two hours later at the Grand Central Station. Further, security camera surveillance at the Manhattan Bridge shows that he was crossing the pedestrian bridge, and then there was an “eerie splash” in the East River just moments after spotting him. There was no camera footage showing him leaving the bridge or leaving the station. Evidence does not conclude a death, but an unsettling lack of further investigation suggests that the “splash” seen in the water could’ve been him, whether he jumped in or slipped, that was unknown.

There was reasonable questioning brought up against the idea that the splash was related to him at all. The time correlation to when he was seen walking across the bridge to

when the splash was caught didn’t make sense, according to his father. He also brought up that someone planning to take their life very unlikely needed to pack a backpack, which makes sense as well (Steven Brenner). Additionally, if a 5’4” boy had fallen off a bridge, somebody else passing by would’ve seen, unless he was alone. Jim, his father, is worried that the splash will make the people and police assume he drowned and end the investigation.

These speculations never made the splash theory disappear and end the story, however. It was known that the entire time the police were tracking his phone, it was being pinged, and the last time they had contact with the phone was around the same time the splash was made in the river. The other suggestion was that Thomas dropped his phone in the river, whether on accident or on purpose. This may give more hope as to the fact that Thomas may still be alive.

Unfortunately, the case still has no lead and hope is being lost. The investigation has completely ruled out the correlation of his disappearance with the site Roblox as of January 28 (Hale), but Thomas’s family still wishes to believe he’s somewhere out there alive. So, whether Thomas Medlin’s motive was to meet a stranger or something else saddening, he is still missing, and his parents want him home.

On nypost.com, “The teen’s mom, Eva Yan, pleaded on Fox & Friends Tuesday for her son to come home, promising, “he’s safe. Nobody’s going to harm him” (Cruz et al.).

Prayers to his mother and father who have gone all this time now with their son. Hopefully their son is somewhere safe and unharmed.
