Our Saviour or Our Destroyer: The Advancements of AI and What it Means for Society By Delaney Crockett
As I consider the use of artificial intelligence (AI), I am struck by the memories of the movies I watched as a kid, like The Terminator, I, Robot, and The Matrix. I recall how destructive and violent AI has been portrayed in sci-fi movies and books. When what I knew as fiction became reality, I was concerned. Why would someone invent something that was only known to be destructive? The more AI has progressed, the more uneasy I have become.
Over the years, AI has had quite an evolution. AI can first be attributed to Theseus, a robotic mouse able to navigate a maze, made in 19501. The software has grown and developed over the years, but it got truly dangerous in 2020 when headlines first began to come out about AI being at an intelligence level higher than humans. Now, everywhere I turn, I see the impacts of AI on my daily life, as well as the lives of others. I watched as my teachers used it to develop questions for classes, and my classmates used it to answer those same questions. I see it now when looking up the history of AI and being given a quick summary by Google’s new AI system. AI art began to advance and be perfected, being used as a replacement for many artists, such as myself. I was insulted when my school used AI to rework the design I had created for our 1
