It’s hard to find a country that does Christmas better than Germany, with traditional markets, some dating back to the 13th Century, found in almost all of its towns and cities. They are the perfect places to seek out unique, handicraft gifts for loved ones, go in search of local culture or simply sit back and people-watch whilst sipping a warm cup of Glühwein.

For a spot of exclusive wellness, visit the modern Caracalla Spa and the historic ‘Friedrichsbad’.

A true winter fairy-tale to behold, the Baden-Baden Christmas Market is located in front of the world famous ‘Lichtentaler Allee’ parks & gardens and the impressive Kurhaus. It boasts over 100 romantically decorated stalls offering Christmas arts and crafts set against a backdrop of festive entertainment including school group choirs, bands and theatre groups.

Round off the year at the New Years Eve Ball and Show (December 31st) at the Kurhaus with excellent dance music, show acts and an exquisite gala dinner and champagne reception.

Baden-Baden’s ‘living nativity’ is one of its most iconic features – follow the sound of bleating sheep and the scent of fresh hay which will lead you to the idyllic life-sized crib situated in front of the Kurhaus.

Berlin

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 21st November – 27th December 2016 There are around 60 traditional Christmas Markets dotted around Berlin, packed full of Christmassy delicacies and charm. The whole city is seemingly beaming with the magic of Christmas! At the Spandau Christmas Market the small streets and squares in Spandauer Altstadt transform into a large, unique Christmas market, as they have done for over 40 years, while the largest continuous pedestrian zone in Berlin houses around 250 market stalls during the week and up to 400 at the weekend. The romantic Berliner Weihnachtzeit can be found on the historic Neptunbrunnen behind Alexanderplatz, with a 600m2 ice rink at its centre; and fans of arts and crafts can visit the Frohnau Arts & Crafts Market featuring 140 artists and craftspeople showcasing their wares. The whole of Alexanderplatz turns into a massive Christmas Market with Christmas treats, crafts and gift ideas on offer under the shadow of the famous TV Tower. If you are celebrating a special occasion, you could choose to indulge in some lovingly prepared festive food under the impressive glass dome of Restaurant Julius. Bremen

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 21st November – 23rd December 2016 The historic Hanseatic city of Bremen is a dazzling sight in the festive period. From a World Heritage Site illuminated by shimmering lights to a mediaeval atmosphere by the water, ice skating in the north and stylish festive shopping fun - Bremen has a lot to offer when it comes to Christmas markets. Held on the historical market square surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage town hall, the cathedral, the Church of Our Lady and the Schütting guildhall, Bremen’s delightful Christmas Market is one of Germany’s finest. Glittering illuminations, the glow of candlelight and the sea of decorated stalls create a special atmosphere that enchants more and more visitors every year. The air is full of delicious aromas – from freshly roasted almonds, to gingerbread and glühwein. The Schlachte promenade along the Weser river also joins in the seasonal fun, when markets of Christmas past are brought to life at ‘Schlachte Magic’. Don´t miss the Bremen Town Musicians. These four fairytale animals are as much a part of Bremen as the river Weser, and you come across them wherever you wander in the old quarter. You can see the famous sculpture outside the town hall, hear the animals’ voices coming out of the ground in front of the State Parliament building and visit the donkey’s grave on Böttcherstrasse. Bremen´s ‘drawing room’ is the Marktplatz, and its greatest attraction is the Town Hall. Guided tours of the historic building provide an insight into its fascinating 600-year history. The tour includes the impressive Upper Town Hall and a look into the splendid Golden Chamber. Since 2004, the Town Hall and the Roland statue have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Things to do and see Christmas Markets 21st November – 23rd December 2016 Situated in the heart of the city, against the backdrop of the Gothic Cathedral, Cologne’s Christmas Market boasts a fascinating array of highquality arts & crafts, delicious food and drinks as well as more than one hundred stage events. Enjoy the aroma of cinnamon, baked apple and mulled wine as you explore the variety of differently-themed markets dotted around the city. Visit the booths near the cathedral where you will find a huge Christmas tree overlooking the live music stage; or the spectacular ice skating rink on Hermarkt. The Market of Angels (Markt der Engel) is on Neumarkt and will dazzle you with its ‘sea of shining stars’. For families, St Nick’s Village on Rudolfplatz is perfect. Darmstadt

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 21st November – 23rd December 2016 Located on the Market Square and around the Castle as well as on the Luisenplatz, the Darmstadt Market with its sparkling Christmas Pyramid, glittering Residential Palace and Old City Hall are sure to get you into the festive mood. The market’s festively decorated stalls feature specialties from Darmstadt’s many twin cities; from handicrafts from Liepaja in Latvia or Hungarian Lángos; to wine and cheese from Swiss Saanen. Be sure to try at least one of the many mulled wines on offer – made from red or white wine, honey, apples or even ‘mulled beer’. For some Christmas shopping, you'll find everything you need in the 500 shops in Darmstadt's city centre. And for special gifts, have a look at the arts and crafts stalls on the Friedensplatz on the weekends, with jewellery, glass works, handmade soap or pottery on display.

Christmas Time tour: Join one of the guided tours through winterly Darmstadt to hear stories about the city and Christmas Market and a friendly get-together over a mulled wine. Hessian State Museum Darmstadt: Built by Alfred Messel in 1902, the museum houses various interesting collections, e.g. history of art, cultural history, geology, palaeontology and zoology. It is considered one of the few universal museums in the world. Old Renaissance Palace: This replaces the old water fortress. Visit its two Baroque wings, built by Remy de la Fosse between 1716 and 1727. Art Nouveau Swimming Bath: Relax at the former “Central Bath”, built in 1909 and influenced by art nouveau. It was renovated in 2007 and now is a wellness centre with pools, sauna and spa.

Düsseldorf

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 17th November – 23rd December 2016 The Düsseldorf Christmas market invites guests from all over the world to a unique Christmas experience, seven different Christmas markets and more than 210 lovingly decorated huts transform the City on the Rhine into a magical world. Explore distinguished handcrafted goods, enjoy a ride on the 100 year old merry-go-round and smell the taste of freshly roasted almonds. Located within easy walking distance, each of the seven Christmas markets boasts a different theme and attractions. The “Sternchenmarkt” (“Little Star Market”) at the Stadtbrückchen boasts a fairytale winter landscape and is idyllically located in the courtyard of the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus. Things to do and see Christmas Markets 23rd November – 22nd December 2016 One of the oldest and largest Christmas Markets in Germany, the history of the Frankfurt Christmas Market can be traced back to 1393. It is so impressive that it has been successfully exported to various cities in the UK, including the popular annual market in Birmingham. Located at the Römerberg (Frankfurt’s historical centre), St Paul’s Square and Main Quay, visitors are treated to a wide fringe programme consisting of concerts, tower horns trumpeting from the balcony of St Nicolas Church, an art exhibition of local artists taking place at the Römerhallen and St Paul’s Church, and the event “Winter lights” at the botanical gardens Palmengarten. The “Pink Christmas Market” at Friedrich Stoltze Square, is dedicated to Frankfurt’s LGBT community and is great fun for anybody looking for a more extraordinary Christmas market.

Be sure to sample the Bethmännchen – small marzipan and almond biscuits named after Frankfurt’s famous 19th Century Chancellor – and wash it down with the local’s beverage of choice, hot apple wine. Visit the Römer (town hall) and the Römerberg, St Paul’s Church and the Emperors’ Cathedral in Frankfurt’s historical centre. Head up to the Main Tower’s observation platform for a fantastic panoramic view from 200 metres above the city. Become acquainted with the market’s many culinary specialities and its traditions on a guided tour. Ascend to the rooftop gallery of St. Nicholas Church for a wonderful panorama view of the entire market and the Frankfurt skyline, then enjoy a nostalgic ride on a vintage carousel.

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 17th November – 23rd December 2016 Hamburg is home to many wonderful Christmas Markets full of history and Hanseatic heritage, making a trip here during the festive season something you will never forget. The start of the advent season also coincides with the largest funfair in the north of Germany, the Hamburg Dom, promising lots of fun for all the family! The prettiest of Hamburg’s markets can be found outside the city’s most impressive town hall, where clowns and circus artists will serve you punch whilst you browse the lovingly decorated stalls. Enjoy a mug of glühwein as you bob along the Alster Lake on a boat tour. Hamburg’s city centre is the only one in Germany situated on the shores of a lake. Be sure to catch one of the Christmas Parades on a Saturday during advent. Take a stroll along the Reeperbahn in the St. Pauli district, where the Beatles shot to fame in the 1960s, it is Hamburg’s top entertainment quarter. Vist the 100-year-old Speicherstadt, the world’s largest warehouse complex - a much prettier place that it sounds! Step back in time in Hamburg’s Old Town, where rich merchants made their fortune with coffee, tea and spices. Visit Cremon Street and its famous Chile House or the old mercantile street, Deichstrasse, lined with warehouses and buildings from the 17th Century.

Leipzig

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 17th November – 23rd December 2016 The history of Leipzig’s Christmas Market dates back to 1458 and it is one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany. Its focal point is of course the old market square in front of the fantastic Old Town Hall where around 250 stalls and booths, twinkling under festive lights, showcase a selection of hand-crafted gifts, ornaments and more.

A significant historical highlight in Leipzig is the St. Nicholas’s Church, known in 1989 throughout the world as the starting point of the “peaceful revolution” and the beginning of Germany’s reunification. Visit the Museum of City History within the Old Town Hall - one of the finest buildings of the German Renaissance, and built in just nine months in 1556/1557.

With daily trumpet fanfares, concerts held by the world-famous St Thomas’ Choir, and performances of Bach from within the city’s plentiful churches, the enchanting sounds of Christmas have never been more prominent.

Also worth a look are the council chambers, the 1823 model of the city, the prison cells and the portrait of Bach.

Other attractions include a giant Ferris Wheel and model railway display on Augustusplatz, a Medieval Christmas Market, a fairytale forest and Finnish Village. Take in the carnival atmosphere whilst you browse the food, drink and gift stalls, ensuring that you sample the gluhwein and bratwust along the way.

Take in Leipzig’s vibrant cultural scene, lovingly restored shopping arcades and lively bars that stay open until late into the evening.

A favourite haunt for the locals is at Nikolaikirchhof, where you will find a large pyramid-shaped wooden tower with a bar that services the most delicious punch!

Taste hot Glögi, reindeer sausage and fresh salmon smoked over open wood fires in the Finnish Village.

Munich

Things to do and see Christmas Markets 25th November – 24th December 2016 The Nuremberg Christmas Market is opened every year by the Christkind (Christmas Angel) in a traditional ‘opening ceremony’. The city boasts numerous markets including one at the Main Market Square (Hauptmarkt) in front of the Church of our Lady; the Markt der Partnerstädte (market of Sister Cities) which takes place at the Rathausplatz, and the beautiful Children’s Christmas Market on the Hans-Sachs-Platz, with its nostalgic merry-go-round. Be sure to try Nuremberg’s famous specialties including Lebkucken (Gingerbread cookies) and Nürnberger Rostbratwürste (grilled sausages). Christmas Markets 22nd November – 22nd December 2016 Every year around the first Advent weekend, Christmas Market season starts all over Thuringia, in the heart of Germany. In Gotha, a Baroque Universe awaits visitors and presents surprising family relations with the House of Windsor. Leuchtenburg Castle, home of a porcelain exhibition, holds a Market of Wishes each year. Winter in Romantic Germany 7 days - Departing 6th November 2016 Day 1 Frankfurt: Fly to Frankfurt and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure. Day 2 Frankfurt - Heidelberg – Black Forest: Travel from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Visit the famous castle ascending with the cable car and enjoy a sightseeing tour of its historic city centre. Idyllically located on the shores of the Neckar River, Heidelberg is one of the most popular destinations in the country. Continue to the famous Black Forest region and enjoy a typical Black Forest dinner and overnight in a romantically located hotel. Day 3 Black Forest - Lake Titisee - Lindau - Füssen: Enjoy a short presentation on the cuckoo clock production and watch the preparation of the traditional Black Forest cake, followed by a sample of course! Day 5 Innsbruck - Munich: Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Innsbruck (Austria), located in the heart of the Alps. The Imperial Palace, the Court Church and the well-known Golden Roof, Innsbruck’s glittering landmark, are all witnesses of this culturally rich city. Day 6 Munich: Visit the city’s main attractions, concluding the tour at the Marienplatz square with its famous clock tower. This evening enjoy a traditional Bavarian dinner. Day 7 Munich - Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Frankfurt: After breakfast, travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Romantic Germany.
