\ BIOS:
Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE was born in Trinidad in 1949 and came to England as a 10-year-old child in 1960. She left school at 16 with the aim of becoming Britain’s first ever black woman bank manager but instead, changed direction and became an actress, presenter, writer, independent producer, working peer and an active advocate for the welfare, care and education of children throughout the world. Floella has also headed a successful film and television production company. She has been in show business for over 45 years appearing on stage, film, radio and television. Her broadcasting work has been recognised with numerous awards, including an OBE in 2000, a Special Lifetime Achievement BAFTA Award in 2005 and the J.M Barrie Lifetime Award in 2012 for her lasting cultural legacy. In 2013, she was made a Fellow of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and was recently appointed as President of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists. She was elevated to the House of Lords in 2010 and speaks on diversity, media and children’s issues. Recently, she was successful in getting the government to bring in legislation for commercial broadcasters to provide UK made television programmes. Her most recent film & TV appearances include Cbeebies Bedtime Stories, Sarah Jane Adventures and Run Fat Boy Run.
John Sergeant John Sergeant is a broadcaster and former political correspondent. John became a trainee at the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, before joining the BBC in 1970 as a radio and television news reporter. John’s assignments included covering events in Vietnam, Rhodesia, Northern Ireland, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. For two years he covered European affairs and the first sessions of the directly elected European Parliament. He has also presented main current affairs programmes on Radio 4, including Today and The World at One. In 1981 he became a political correspondent for television and radio winning a Press Guild Award for the Most Memorable Outside Broadcast – this was when Margaret Thatcher interrupted his live report from outside the British Embassy in Paris to announce her participation in the second round of the Conservative Party leadership ballot. John left the BBC and joined ITN in March 2000 as Political Editor and in 2002, John returned to his love of light entertainment appearing on a variety of programmes including: Have I Got News For You, Countdown, Qi Room 101, The News Quiz and Strictly Come Dancing.
Jan Leeming Although best known as a renowned Television Newsreader, Jan Leeming has had a long and varied career in theatre and as an author. Her first job as a Newsreader was for Granada Television in Manchester which led to a long-running career in broadcasting. She spent seven years as a newsreader with the BBC, fronted Women Only for six years for HTV, co-presented the nightly news programme Report West, and spent two years as a presenter on the BBC daytime magazine programme Pebble Mill concurrent with several series of The Food Programme for the BBC. Jan compered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982, was twice voted Newsreader of the Year, and won the Pye Award as Television Personality of the Year. Since leaving BBC News Jan continues to be seen on numerous television shows including; The Garden Party; ITV`s This Morning; BBC`s Whatever Happened To?; The Harry Hill Show; So Graham Norton; Newsreaders’ Masterclass; Through the Keyhole and even took part in the ITV series ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!’
