Switzerland Rail Holidays

Have you been to Switzerland?
No? Splendid. Now is as good a time as any to book your first trip to the Swiss Alps and cities, to experience some of the many highlights, maybe combined with a couple of lesser-known mountain resorts, cities, and train routes. A word of caution, though: this might be your first of many trips to Switzerland! You have already been to Switzerland? Splendid. How about you visit again, but in a different season? Or you explore a new region - as a reminder, Switzerland includes four distinct cultural and language areas? You explore a different region in the Swiss Alps? You travel on a train which you haven’t heard of?
Either way, we can’t wait to welcome you to Switzerland. And we encourage you to choose a rail tour, the most convenient and sustainable way to see the country. We’re convinced that you’ll soon be telling yourself #INeedSwitzerland again.

Sustainable Switzerland
Switzerland – the champion in sustainability. Its long-term efforts – from consistent recycling to strict requirements for construction projects – are regularly reflected in top rankings in international sustainability rankings. A study conducted in 2022 found that more than 80 % of travellers consider sustainable tourism important and are willing to adopt sustainable travel practices. Something this small country was more than ready for.
Public transport eco-friendly without compromise
Public transport in Switzerland is not only one of the most environmentally friendly in the world but the most beautiful and inspiring way to discover Switzerland. Examples of its efforts to become even greener are numerous: PostBus, which provides access to the most remote corners of Switzerland, is steadily expanding the number of electric postbuses, the first all-electric, year-round passenger ship recently began operating on Lake Lugano, and with the Staubernbahn, Switzerland has its first cable car powered exclusively by solar energy.
Swisstainable committed accommodation – a new era begins
Sustainability has been an integral part of business management for many lodging companies for years. The comprehensive sustainability program “Swisstainable” gives a face to these long-standing efforts aiming for more sustainable overnight stays. Swisstainable means caring for people and the environment, conserving resources, operating responsibly, and pampering guests with high-quality products and services.
Conscious consumption culinary heritage reinvented
The remoteness of many Alpine valleys has given rise to countless culinary specialties, resulting in a culinary diversity that leaves nothing to be desired. Discovering these ancient dishes – original or reinvented – is a real pleasure. Numerous dedicated chefs have made it their business to reinterpret the culinary heritage of Switzerland for their guests: Organic products from the surrounding countryside and the mindful use of selected animal products stand for conscious consumption and revive traditional Switzerland in an innovative way.

Meet The Swiss Residents
Switzerland is home to not just the iconic Swiss Cow, whose bells can be heard clanging across the land on the hillsides during the summer months, as they dine on the sweet meadow grasses - you can meet some of the other residents too!

Blacknose Sheep
A special experience awaits in the Valais region above Zermatt, where visitors have the unique chance to meet the charming local mountain residents in their natural surroundings. Using a free tracking app, you can follow their movements and enjoy the excitement of spotting them up close as they emerge from their burrows or wander across the alpine meadows. This interactive approach not only makes the search easier but also adds an element of fun and anticipation, particularly for families and wildlife enthusiasts!
A useful tip is to plan your visit in the morning, when the sheep are more active and generally more welcoming to human company, often appearing with less hesitation. With stunning mountain scenery as a backdrop, the encounter becomes as memorable for the setting (See page 13, 25, 27 and 37 for tours to Zermatt.)
Marmots
Marmots are found in their natural Alpine habitat throughout Switzerland, where these characterful creatures can often be seen basking in the sun or foraging in the meadows. They thrive in high-altitude pastures and rocky slopes, making them a familiar sight in many of the country’s most scenic mountain regions.
Popular places to spot marmots include Saas Fee (see page 27), where they are so accustomed to visitors that they may venture quite close, the Stanserhorn near Lucerne (see pages 19 and 31 for tours including Lucerne), where a ride on the open-top cable car offers both panoramic views and the chance to encounter them on the hillside, and the Engadine valley (see page 13 and 25 for tours to this region), where quiet trails provide ideal conditions for observing these creatures in their natural environment.
St. Bernard Dogs
Barryland is a unique theme park dedicated to the famous St Bernard, Switzerland’s beloved national dog, and offers visitors the chance to learn about the history and enduring legacy of this remarkable breed. The centre is home to around 30 of these gentle giants, whose ancestors once played a vital role in mountain rescue, bravely helping to save countless lives in the snowy Alpine passes. Today, the dogs continue to make a difference in new ways, working as social companions and therapy animals, bringing comfort and joy to people of all ages.
At Barryland you can observe the dogs in specially designed enclosures, discover interactive exhibitions that explore their heritage, and gain a deeper understanding of how the St Bernard has become a true Swiss icon. The experience is both educational and heartwarming, offering a close encounter with animals that embody courage, loyalty and kindness. (Page 29 for a holiday to this region).

That’s the ticket! The Beauty of a Swiss Travel Pass
If you want to keep your holiday arrangements loose, but know you want to get value for money out of every last second of your Swiss Holiday then a Swiss Travel Pass is a great way to do it!
Offering unlimited public transportation by rail, bus and boat within Switzerland (and parts of Liechtenstein and Italy), several included mountains excursions, included entrance to over 500 museums, and exciting excursions while ensuring a seamless and convenient experience, you can choose from 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 15 consecutive days, or opt for a Flex Pass to use your number of days’ travel passes intermittently over a period of one month.
Your pass even covers iconic and panoramic train journeys such as Glacier Express, Bernina Express, Gotthard Panorama Express, GoldenPass, Luzern-Interlaken Express (some require a seat reservation fee which we can book for you in advance) and more (see map opposite).
It doesn’t stop there! In addition, your Swiss Travel Pass also allows you to enjoy discounted prices for many privately-owned railways, mountain excursions and local experiences.
Children travel free under the age of 15 and receive all the same benefits at no charge when travelling one or more parents with a Swiss Family Card.
With a simple QR code on your phone (or printed at home, if you prefer), all you have to do is board the train with your passport and Switzerland is yours to discover in your own time.

Explore Landwasser World
The Landwasser Viaduct towers over the Albula Valley and the sight of Glacier or Bernina Express trundling over the soaring arches is familiar to many.
But, surrounding the viaduct, there is a whole world of wonder to discover. You’ll be forgiven for using the term “choo-choo” here, it’s absolutely acceptable in reference to the historic trains and shuttles that weave through this area, through the valley and to the several viewing platforms.
There is also time to explore the Albula Railway museum, and learn about the incredible feat of engineering that made travel through the region possible on the UNESCO World Heritage Albula Railway Line.

Add this exciting extension to your holiday!

Gotthard Panorama Express
Leaving Lucerne on board one of Lake Lucerne Navigation’s beautiful boats (some of which are historic paddle steamers), you will enjoy the open water of Lake Lucerne as you head to the far side of the lake, passing Rütli - the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation in 1291 - and the chapel marking the spot where William Tell is said to have escaped his pursuers by throwing himself overboard. In just under 3 hours, you’ll arrive in Flüelen, ready to board the panoramic carriages of the Gotthard Panorama Express. The train will wind and weave its way through the mountains, including a triple-pass of the Baroque church at Wassen, as the railway loops round to pass through the challenging terrain using helical (spiral) tunnels to twist through the rock. You’ll continue your journey through the Gotthard Pass – bypassing the world’s longest railway tunnel – to find yourself in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, Ticino (see page 34-35) where you will glide past the castles of Bellinzona and wine terraces cut into the hillsides, before ending your journey in the gorgeous lakeside resort of Lugano. You could also start this journey in Arth-Goldau if you would prefer a rail-only experience. Close by to Arth-Goldau you will find Mount Rigi: The Queen of the Mountains. A favourite of Queen Victoria and still a favourite today among rail enthusiasts and hikers alike. You can enjoy Mount Rigi as an excursion on some of our rail holiday packages (see pages 19, 21, 31 and 37). You can also drop your luggage off beforehand and travel luggage free with the available luggage service, enjoy a meal on board and take clear photographs from the open carriage.

Summer in Lucerne
Lucerne has everything, nestled on the tip of a turquoise lake and surrounded by mountain peaks, the city is within reach of anything you could want from both a city break and a scenic escape.
The iconic Chapel Bridge sits proudly just a stone’s throw from the train station, surrounded by water flowing from Lake Lucerne through the city centre and creating a picture-perfect photograph moment at any time of day. During the day, the aquamarine water dazzles as it flows under the ancient wooden structures, and at night, the water’s surface twinkles with the soft warm lighting from the bridge and the traditional façades beyond.
The lake itself is the gateway to the surrounding area, with beautiful resorts and mountains with their historic stories dotted all along its shoreline; easily accessible by boat, rail, bus or cable car. Visit the lakeside spots of Vitznau, Weggis, Brunnen and Rutli (the “birthplace of Switzerland” – you can learn all about that on the “Legends of Lake Lucerne” excursion, see page 22), and make your way to quiet villages such as quaint Beckenried to escape the crowds or ascend the peaks of Mts Pilatus, Rigi or Burgenstock for some crisp mountain air.
If you’re looking for something a little more high octane, venture a little further afield and you can ride the world’s first revolving cable car up to the yearround adventure playground that is Mount Titlis (more detail on page 20).

In the spotlight
Lucerne in Winter
In the winter months, as a dusting of snow settles atop the wooden bridges, Lucerne transforms into a sparkling wonderland; from festive markets on cobbled streets with warming treats and gifts galore, to the untamed carnival spirit of the festival “Fasnacht” in February, where the city comes alive to (really!) party until the small hours in celebration before the austerity of lent.
Lake cruises can also still be enjoyed in midwinter, as Lake Lucerne does not freeze over owing to its great depth. In addition, the regions boast world-class ski resorts a short ride away and at over 3000m at Mount Titlis, you can discover a further paradise of activities and adventures; Europe’s highest suspension bridge Cliff Walk, Ice flyer chairlift, glacier caves and rugged peaks.
Mts Rigi and Pilatus are also open to enjoy in the winter months with hiking and tobogganing available for some snowy fun, making Lucerne a year-round destination to enjoy a variety of pursuits.

Legends of Lake Lucerne
There is nothing else quite like this new luxury offering from Lake Lucerne Navigation Company – operators of one of Switzerland’s most important transport systems. This is a high-end day to remember, where the charm of vintage travel and storytelling meet modern flavours and luxury. Operates May - September.

See pages 19, 31 and 37 for holidays to Lucerne to add this experience

A word from Sally Barlow, our Product Manager
“I really, really loved this but I don’t want to spoil any surprises so I’ll give an overview that I hope will tempt you to experience this wonderful day out without giving too much away!
This 5-hour excursion is very high-end but still laid-back and makes for the perfect escape from the city crowds. From the turquoise water of Lake Lucerne, you’ll set sail from the city centre in the morning, leaving the quay with a glass of something fizzy and delicious on a vintage century-old paddle steamer ship. The day is spent relaxing on board or on deck, and takes you on a guided tour of the entire lake; hearing tales of its towns, villages, mountains and important historical sites as well as the history of the shipping company from its founder Casimir Friedrich Knörr himself*, which has been running for nearly 200 years, since 1837. You’ll enjoy all this over an assortment of 5 delicious gourmet courses (plus a surprise 6th!) – each with specially-selected free-flowing wines throughout the day (or soft drinks) which have also been paired to the food.
The service is exceptional; dietary requirements can be catered for – there are full vegetarian, vegan, gluten and lactose free menus available and also a range of alcohol-free wines - which would be an incredible level of catering in a land-based restaurant, so is even more impressive when prepared on board a moving ship!
When and where else could you savour Swiss specialities, washed down with a glass of fine wine while watching 100-year-old paddles powering you along a beautiful lake?
In short, if you're looking for something different, special, luxurious that comes with the added bonus of some peace and quiet, this is a fantastic option and as I really believe that as more people experience it, the word of mouth will make this a must-do in central Switzerland.”
(*disclaimer: it's an actor!)”

The Ticino Region
The Italian-speaking Ticino is the region of Switzerland where the sun stays a little longer, warming the wine terraces ready to make the region’s distinctive (and delicious!) white Merlot, which is ready in turn to be sipped over a risotto or polenta dish. With both the Gotthard Panorama Express (see page 16) or the Centovalli Railway (opposite) connecting the region to the rest of the country, it is so easy to reach this paradise of sun-heated lakes, dreamy waterside cities of Lugano and Locarno, hills peppered with picture-perfect villages and the fortresses of Bellinzona, and the rather more refreshing and startlingly turquoise glacial waters of the valleys.
For a short break, showcasing the contrasts of the German-speaking capital, to the more temperate climes of Ticino region, enjoy a short stay in Bern before heading across a window of Italy on the Centovalli Railway, back into Switzerland’s southern lake region.
