Sacha Waysa, que desde el año 2012 abrió sus puertas al turismo comunitario. Su propuesta integra: hospedaje, alimentación tradicional, caminatas guiadas por la selva, talleres de artesanía y experiencias culturales que conectan al visitante con la vida amazónica.

Sacha Waysa has welcomed visitors through community based tourism since 2012. Their proposal brings together lodging, traditional food, guided walks through the rainforest, artisan workshops, and cultural experiences that connect visitors with Amazonian life.

Su cosmovisión kichwa reconoce a la naturaleza como madre y a la comunidad como un tejido de reciprocidad. Cada actividad que ofrecen está guiada por el respeto a la tierra, la memoria ancestral y la búsqueda de un encuentro auténtico entre culturas.

Rooted in an kichwa worldview, they recognize nature as mother and the community as a fabric of reciprocity. Every activity they offer is guided by respect for the land, ancestral memory, and the pursuit of an authentic encounter between cultures.

José Yumbo, líder y fundador de la comunidad 9 de junio, comparte que la creación de Sacha Waysa nació con el propósito de apoyar a sus familias y ofrecer a los visitantes una experiencia única y significativa. Con dedicación constante, asegura que siempre estará presente para respaldar a la comunidad en lo que necesite, porque aunque parezca un trabajo pequeño, es fruto de una mano de obra personal realizada con cariño y compromiso. Su visión es mostrar al mundo la riqueza de la Amazonía y las experiencias inolvidables que se pueden vivir, reafirmando que cada detalle de Sacha Waysa refleja el amor por la tierra y la gente que la habita.

José Yumbo, leader and founder of the community “9 de Junio”, shares that the creation of Sacha Waysa was born from the purpose of supporting local families and offering visitors a unique and meaningful experience. With constant dedication, he affirms that he will always be present to support the community in whatever is needed, because even if the work may seem small, it is the result of personal effort carried out with care and commitment. His vision is to show the world the richness of the Amazon and the unforgettable experiences it offers, reaffirming that every detail of Sacha Waysa reflects love for the land and the people who lives in the community.

Yumbo Chongo José, Founder of the Community

Marcia Yumbo, vicepresidenta de la comunidad 9 de Junio, señala que cada familia trabaja en Sacha Waysa pensando en el bienestar de sus hogares y en la sostenibilidad. Resalta el valor de los servicios que ofrecen, desde alimentos hasta artesanías, y la necesidad de seguir creando nuevas formas de generar ingresos. Su visión es impulsar emprendimientos que fortalezcan la economía local y atraigan más visitantes, asegurando un crecimiento sostenible para la comunidad.

Marcia Yumbo, vice president of the 9 de Junio community, explains that each family works in Sacha Waysa with the well being of their households and sustainability in mind. She highlights the value of the services they provide from food to handicrafts and the need to continue creating new ways of generating income. Her vision is to promote initiatives that strengthen the local economy and attract more visitors, ensuring sustainable growth for the community.

Lino Chongo, guía nativo de Sacha Waysa, resalta el valor de la chakra como espacio esencial para el cultivo del cacao y su proceso artesanal, que refleja el trabajo y la identidad de la comunidad. Indica que los alimentos que se comparten con los visitantes, como la yuca, el plátano y otros productos, provienen directamente de lo que ellos mismos siembran y cosechan. Para él, la conexión con la naturaleza ,sus cascadas, flora y fauna, es fundamental, y su conocimiento guía a los visitantes hacia una experiencia auténtica de la Amazonía.

Lino Chongo, native guide of Sacha Waysa, highlights the value of the chakra as an essential space for cacao cultivation and its artisanal process, which reflects the work and identity of the community. He explains that the foods shared with visitors, such as cassava, plantain, and other products, come directly from what they themselves plant and harvest. For him, the connection with nature its waterfalls, flora, and fauna is fundamental, and his knowledge guides visitors toward an authentic Amazonian experience.

María Anchundia, coordinadora del grupo de jóvenes Sacha Kuyrana Maltakunas, expresa que junto a los jóvenes de la comunidad impulsan iniciativas para fortalecer Sacha Waysa. Se refleja en acciones como la reforestación y el cuidado de los espacios naturales, además de la creación de lugares que hoy sirven para las actividades comunitarias. La participación juvenil es un apoyo fundamental que impulsa la comunidad, demostrando que el compromiso de las nuevas generaciones asegura la continuidad y mejora de este proyecto colectivo.

María Anchundia, coordinator of the young group Sacha Kuyrana Maltakunas, explains that together with the young people of the community they promote initiatives to strengthen Sacha Waysa. This is reflected in actions such as reforestation, the care of natural spaces, and the creation of places that now serve for community activities. Young participation is a fundamental support that drives the community forward, showing that the commitment of new generations ensures the continuity and growth of this collective project.

Gerardo Yumbo, presidente de la asociación Sacha Waysa, destaca el valor del guayusa upina como tradición que ha mantenido unidas a las familias. Cada madrugada, a las cuatro de la mañana, la comunidad se reúne para compartir esta bebida sagrada y transmitir inspiración y conocimientos a los más jóvenes. Para él, conservar esta costumbre asegura que las nuevas generaciones continúen aprendiendo y fortaleciendo la vida en Sacha Waysa, manteniendo vivo el legado cultural de la comunidad.

Every dawn, at four in the morning, the community gathers to share this sacred drink and pass on inspiration and knowledge to the younger generations. Medicina Ancestral

Florinda Yumbo, encargada de la medicina ancestral, prepara la guayusa, planta sagrada que acompaña las madrugadas kichwas. Su conocimiento no se limita a esta bebida. La comunidad conserva prácticas y saberes que forman parte de un legado más amplio de salud y equilibrio. Cada preparación refleja la cosmovisión kichwa, donde la naturaleza es madre y la medicina es un vínculo de respeto y reciprocidad.

Ancestral Medicine

Florinda Yumbo, guardian of ancestral medicine, prepares guayusa, the sacred plant that accompanies kichwas dawns. Her knowledge goes beyond this drink: the community preserves practices and wisdom that form part of a broader legacy of health and balance. Each preparation reflects the Andean worldview, where nature is mother and medicine is a bond of respect and reciprocity.

En las manos de Olga Huatatoca se conserva la tradición culinaria. El maito de jandía envuelto en hojas de bijao es solo una muestra de la diversidad gastronómica que ofrecen como: platos preparados con condimentos, semillas y productos sembrados y cosechados por ellos mismos. La cocina comunitaria es un espacio de encuentro donde cada sabor transmite identidad, memoria y el vínculo profundo con la chakra.

Flavors

In the hands of Olga Huatatoca, culinary tradition is preserved. Maito de jandía, wrapped in bijao leaves, is just one example of the diverse gastronomy they offer: dishes prepared with spices, seeds, and products that they themselves plant and harvest. The community kitchen is a space of encounter where every flavor conveys identity, memory, and a deep bond with the chakra.

En la ceremonia de Sacha Waysa, la comunidad ofrece guayusa a los visitantes, compartiendo un saber que va más allá de la bebida. La guayusa es considerada una planta sagrada, cultivada y utilizada por los pueblos kichwa durante siglos como fuente de energía y conexión espiritual. En el ritual conocido como guayusa upina, que se realiza en la madrugada, se narran sueños, se transmiten consejos y se fortalecen los lazos comunitarios. Los visitantes aprenden cómo se prepara la infusión y descubren que la medicina ancestral en Sacha Waysa no se limita a esta planta, sino que abarca un conjunto de conocimientos que integran salud, espiritualidad y respeto por la naturaleza. Estas prácticas, compartidas hoy en el marco del turismo comunitario, fortalecen la identidad cultural de la comunidad.

During the ceremony at Sacha Waysa, the community offers guayusa to visitors, sharing knowledge that goes beyond the drink itself. Guayusa is considered a sacred plant, cultivated and used by the Kichwa people for centuries as a source of energy and spiritual connection. In the ritual known as guayusa upina, held at dawn, dreams are recounted, advice is shared, and community bonds are strengthened. Visitors learn how the infusion is prepared and discover that ancestral medicine in Sacha Waysa is not limited to this plant, but encompasses a broader body of knowledge that integrates health, spirituality, and respect for nature. These practices, now shared within the framework of community based tourism, reinforce the cultural identity of the community.

En Sacha Waysa la comunidad, con su tambor en las manos, guía a los visitantes en un viaje sonoro hacia la memoria ancestral. La música ha sido transmitida de generación en generación como una forma de narrar historias, honrar a la pachamama y enseñar valores. En la ceremonia los visitantes aprenden a acompañar el ritmo con la danza, donde la lanza (antes herramienta de caza) se transforma en símbolo cultural y parte de la coreografía. También se les explica cómo suena la concha de caracol gigante, instrumento que antiguamente servía para llamar o enviar mensajes entre comunidades. Estos elementos musicales y rituales en Sacha Waysa no son solo demostraciones artísticas, son expresiones vivas de una cosmovisión que entiende la música como puente entre lo humano y lo espiritual, y que hoy se comparte como parte de su propuesta de turismo comunitario.

In Sacha Waysa, the community, with the drum in their hands, guides visitors on a sonic journey into ancestral memory. Music has been passed down from generation to generation as a way of telling stories, honoring Pachamama, and teaching values. During the ceremony, visitors learn to accompany the rhythm with dance, where the spear (once a hunting tool) is transformed into a cultural symbol and part of the choreography. They are also shown how the sound of the giant conch shell an instrument once used to call or send messages between communities resonates. These musical and ritual elements in Sacha Waysa are not merely artistic demonstrations; they are living expressions of a worldview that understands music as a bridge between the human and the spiritual, now shared as part of its community tourism proposal.

La olla con guayusa que hierve en la madrugada anuncia el inicio del guayusa upina, una práctica que ha acompañado a las familias de Sacha Waysa por generaciones. Este ritual no es solo una bebida compartida, es un espacio de diálogo donde se transmiten sueños, consejos y aprendizajes que fortalecen la comunidad. Gracias a esta costumbre, las nuevas generaciones han crecido con valores de respeto, unión y gratitud hacia la naturaleza y sus familias. Mantener vivo el guayusa upina es fundamental para que la memoria ancestral siga siendo guía en el presente y no se pierda un legado que sostiene la identidad cultural de la comunidad.

Keeping guayusa upina alive is essential so that ancestral memory continues to guide the present and a legacy that sustains the community’s cultural identity is not lost.

El maito de jandía, envuelto en hojas de bijao, es una receta que se prepara en la Amazonía desde tiempos ancestrales. En Sacha Waysa, este plato no es únicamente alimento, es memoria viva de la relación entre la comunidad y la selva. Su preparación transmitida de generación en generación, refleja un modo de vida sostenible donde cada ingrediente proviene de la tierra cultivada y cuidada por ellos mismos. Degustar del maito de jandía significa compartir identidad, celebrar la unión y reconocer que la gastronomía es también un lenguaje de resistencia cultural.

En Sacha Waysa, el visitante puede hospedarse en cabañas familiares y espacios de glamping que ofrecen todos los servicios necesarios para una estancia cómoda, sin perder la conexión con la naturaleza. Lo que hace especial a estos alojamientos es su ubicación dentro de la comunidad, aquí cada amanecer y cada atardecer se convierten en experiencias irrepetibles acompañadas por los sonidos de la selva y la vida cotidiana de quienes la habitan.

En los senderos de la comunidad la naturaleza se manifiesta también a través del avistamiento de aves. Durante las caminatas los visitantes pueden apreciar la diversidad de especies que habitan la selva amazónica, desde loros coloridos hasta aves que anuncian el amanecer con su canto. White clay and brown clay applied to the skin are part of traditional practices that draw on the minerals and vitamins present in the natural environment. Las cascadas y ríos no son solo paisajes son espacios de encuentro espiritual. Allí, los visitantes experimentan momentos únicos de conexión, donde el sonido del agua y la frescura del entorno despiertan emociones de paz y renovación. Ruta del Cacao

En Sacha Waysa, el chocolate se prepara desde cero, siguiendo un proceso que inicia con la clasificación del grano luego el tostado de las semillas recién cosechadas, continúa con la molienda y culmina en el baño maría. Los visitantes participan activamente en cada etapa, aprendiendo sobre los distintos tipos de cacao y la importancia de esta planta en la vida comunitaria. La “Ruta del Cacao” no es solo una demostración gastronómica, es un recorrido por la memoria ancestral que enseña como el cacao ha sido fuente de energía, intercambio y cultura en la Amazonía.

Cacao Route

In Sacha Waysa, chocolate is prepared from scratch, following a process that begins with the selection of the beans, then the roasting of freshly harvested seeds, continues with grinding, and culminates in the bain marie. Visitors actively participate in each stage, learning about the different types of cacao and the importance of this plant in community life. The “Cacao Route” is not only a gastronomic demonstration, it is a journey through ancestral memory that teaches how cacao has been a source of energy, exchange, and culture in the Amazon.

La experiencia culmina en la mesa, donde el chocolate artesanal se sirve acompañado de plátano cultivado por la comunidad. Probarlo es descubrir un universo de sabores que nacen directamente de la tierra y se transforman en momentos únicos de convivencia. En Sacha Waysa cada degustación es más que un acto culinario es una celebración de la identidad, un instante donde la tradición y presente se encuentran para ofrecer al visitante una experiencia irrepetible.

The experience culminates at the table, where handmade chocolate is served alongside plantains cultivated by the community. Tasting it is to discover a universe of flavors born directly from the earth and transformed into unique moments of togetherness. In Sacha Waysa, each tasting is more than a culinary act it is a celebration of identity, a moment where tradition and the present meet to offer visitors an unrepeatable experience.

A través de mi visión y de mi cámara busco capturar momentos únicos que reflejan la esencia de la Amazonía y de la comunidad de Sacha Waysa. Cada imagen es un testimonio de la vida, la cultura y la naturaleza que se entrelazan en este territorio, y mi intención es que quienes observen estas fotografías puedan sentir la misma conexión y admiración que yo experimento al estar allí. Esta guía cultural no solo documenta, sino que se convierte en un puente que invita a descubrir y valorar la riqueza de un modo de vida que merece ser compartido y preservado. Es una herramienta para mantener viva la memoria ancestral y para reconocer la importancia de la comunidad como guardiana de la selva y de sus tradiciones.

Through my vision and my camera, I seek to capture unique moments that reflect the essence of the Ecuadorian Amazon and the community of Sacha Waysa. Each image is a testimony of life, culture, and nature intertwined in this territory, and my intention is that those who observe these photographs may feel the same connection and admiration that I experience when I was being there. This cultural guide not only documents, it becomes to a bridge that invites discovery and appreciation of the richness of a way of life that deserves to be shared and preserved. It is a tool to keep ancestral memory alive and to recognize the importance of the community as guardian of the jungle and its traditions.

Esta Guía Cultural se convierte en un testimonio vivo de la Amazonía y de la comunidad de Sacha Waysa. No es solo un compendio de imágenes y relatos, sino una invitación a sentir la selva, a escuchar las voces que la habitan y a reconocer la memoria que sostiene su identidad. Al recorrer sus páginas, el lector se adentra en un territorio donde tradición y presente dialogan, y donde cada experiencia compartida fortalece el vínculo entre la comunidad y quienes la visitan.
