Condensing Unit Guidance Notes

Foster can offer the complete package on request. The following is a guide of considerations for typical applications. Please note that as each installation is unique, it is the responsibility of the installing engineer to select the components relevant to prevailing site conditions and the customer’s intended method of operation.

Condensing Unit

The conditions experienced by the condensing unit will vary considerably throughout the cycle. The capacity has been defined in given conditions but please ensure that:

When selecting the condensing unit for Blast Chilling, the evaporating temperature range should be a minimum of +10°C to -25°C to cope with the pull down load.

When selecting the condensing unit for Blast Freezing, the evaporating temperature range should be a minimum of +10°C to -40°C on MBCF occasional freeze models. The MBCF models use MOP expansion valves rated at -15°C.

Condensing Unit Components

Where the dealer supplies the Condensing Unit, all of the following items need to be supplied: Condensing Unit, Oil Separator, Oil Separator Heater, HP/LP switch, Sight Glass, Drier Suction Line Vibration Eliminator, Crankcase Heater, Liquid Line Solenoid Valve (must be fitted at liquid inlet to Blast Chiller Coldroom, not at the Condensing Unit), Power Box (this should contain a minimum of lockable isolator, circuit breakers, contactors and current overloads to suit the Condensing Unit).

The start method for the compressor will depend on equipment size and site conditions. ie. DOL, Star Delta, PWS.

On MBCF models only, an interlock preventing both defrost and pump down simultaneously may be required depending on rating of electrical supply. Suction Line insulation, refrigerant and electrical cabling also to be supplied by the dealer.

The installer should consider aspects such as capacity control, condenser head pressure control and unloaded start (as deemed necessary by site conditions and anticipated usage).

For additional protection, the following should be considered: Phase failure, Suction Line Accumulator (particularly with short pipe runs where there is potential for liquid return).

Recommendations

To facilitate fault diagnosis we suggest that a shut off valve and sight glass be installed just after the liquid line solenoid valve and a pressure line connection in the suction line exit from the Blast Chiller/Freezer.

Where a double module unit is installed, it is usual to supply a common liquid and suction line from the condensing unit to the Blast Chiller/Freezer and branch off on top of the coldroom. Fit shutoff valves and sight glass in each branch after the tee.

Additional Information

MBCT models are supplied floorless for blast chilling application only.

MBCFT models are supplied complete with 25mm floor and are suitable for occasional blast freezing and non-ground floor sites.

Chilling capacity 70°C to 3°C in less than 90 minutes within specifications. Entry temperature of up to 90°C for chilling. Freezing capacity from 70°C to -18°C in less than 240 minutes within specifications.

Remote

models

- All remote systems must be installed and commissioned by competent persons. They must be installed in accordance with the prevailing version of EN378 “Refrigerating systems and heat pumps. Safety and environmental requirementsBasic requirements, definitions, classification and selection criteria” and BS 7671 – “Requirements for Electrical Installations” and the appropriate commissioning documents completed accordingly.

NOTE: Condensing units must not be installed on top of remote cabinets – some additional stressing has to be built into a cabinet to withstand the weight of a top-mounted unit.

Trolley Loading and Modular Products

- INSTALLATION

Modular products are supplied with a panel plan and installation guidelines. Installation should be carried out by a competent person. NB. Modular products must be installed on a clear, flat, level, smooth and hard base.

- RECESSED FLOORS

Where floors, perimeter walls, or screeds are to be recessed for flush entry, a relevant recess depth from finished floor level should be provided. Please specify/indicate ‘recessed floor’ and ‘wiper gasket door’ requirements on order instructions.

- SITE ACCESS

We recommend that site access is checked to ensure that products, particularly modular panels, can be manoeuvred to the point of installation.

- HEAVY DUTY APPLICATION

We recommend the use of appropriate wall protection and/or floor reinforcing/insitu floors for any uses other than pedestrian/light trolley. Please contact the sales office for details.

We usually deliver between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, but we also offer an out of hours and weekend service if you need it –just get in touch to discuss.

Access/Special Deliveries

Transport of old product whilst delivering new product in line with the WEEE Directive. Product being collected must be the same size as replacement, and be located on the ground floor with clear access, otherwise additional charges will apply. Product will be collected and then later assessed by Foster. Please contact us for further information. Products must be disconnected, clean and empty and in a safe condition at time of collection. Collection with tail lift, from a suitable point on customer’s premises - based on ground floor site with clear access (between road and dealer premises/customer site e.g. no double lines, no vehicle restrictions etc. and no steps or stairs, no obstacles or insufficiently wide or tall doorways). Product needs to be located without additional equipment or site modifications.

Remote models

- All remote systems must be installed and commissioned by competent persons. They must be installed in accordance with the prevailing version of EN378 “Refrigerating systems and heat pumps. Safety and environmental requirementsBasic requirements, definitions, classification and selection criteria” and BS 7671 – “Requirements for Electrical Installations” and the appropriate commissioning documents completed accordingly.

NOTE: Condensing units must not be installed on top of remote cabinets – some additional stressing has to be built into a cabinet to withstand the weight of a top-mounted unit.

Modular Products (Flexbar and keg coolers)

- INSTALLATION

Modular products are supplied with a panel plan and installation guidelines. NB. Modular products must be installed on a clear, flat, level, smooth and hard base.

- SITE ACCESS

We recommend that site access is checked to ensure that products, particularly modular panels, can be manoeuvred to the point of installation.

Product being collected must be the same size as replacement, and be located on the ground floor with clear access, otherwise additional charges will apply.
