CONTAINER SHIPPING MARKET TURNS A CORNER … IN LOCKSTEP?

lobal container shipping turned a corner in the second quarter of 2022 according to the findings of the latest Quarterly Review of the market produced by MDS Transmodal and Global Shippers Forum.
Covid lockdowns in China, suppressing supply of manufactured goods and demand for raw materials, and plummeting sentiment in consuming countries, due to rising interest rates and energy prices, contributed to a fall in average earnings per container carried for the first time since 2020. (Graph 4.1)*
While total container carryings were up on Q1, this volume remained below the level recorded in the same period a year ago (Graph 1.2). This was despite traffic that had switched to other modes or to bulk shipping earlier in the year returning to the more traditional containerised mode.
The reliability and consistency of port calls showed a small improvement in Q2, but this was seemingly made by intermediate port calls being missed altogether. The capacity lost to ‘skipped’ ports remains high (Graph 7.2).

A reshaping of container shipping service patterns seems to be underway with a further increase in Q2 of the number of services connecting no more than two regions, together with a reduction in those linking more than two regions (Graph 2.2). In practical terms this means long, multi-port ‘loop’ schedules are being replaced by ‘shuttle’ services with transhipments required at hub ports in order for containers to reach their ultimate destinations.
it will be interesting to see as a consequence the share of the minor bulks trade that returns to the major lines. The direct connectivity and reliability of making port calls offered to shippers continues to deteriorate.
In welcoming the Quarterly report James Hookham, Director of GSF, said, “This is the first time the GSF/MDS Transmodal Quarterly Review is showing a significant change in the direction of travel. This is just one set of data points, but shippers are telling us the world economy, international trade and the global shipping market have entered a new phase, with different factors at work compared to the past two years.”
Over the coming months, GSF and MDS Transmodal will continue monitoring whether the opportunistic gains made by shipping lines since 2020 are consolidated into a strategic shift in rates and service patterns imposed on shippers, or whether different carriers will respond instinctively and distinctively to the changing conditions.
James Hookham continued, “This change in market dynamics could provide a context for the use of freedoms granted to shipping lines under anti-trust immunity and Block Exemption legislation to re-engineer an industry-wide shift in capacity deployment, service patterns, port call frequency and market share concentration. Recent experience has shown this is not a market where regulators can ‘legislate and forget’ hoping expected behaviours are observed.

NIKRASA
NEW NIKRASA VERSION 3.0 FOR HANDLING OF NON-CRANEABLE TRAILERS
TX Logistik AG (Mercitalia Group) has now presented the third generation of its NiKRASA technology. The solution, which also allows non-craneable semi-trailers to be easily loaded onto rail, has been improved once again and successfully tested in advance in rail and terminal operations. The newly designed version 3.0 requires no terminal ramp, is stackable and has been optimized once again for rail transport of megatrailers.

he basis for the further development of the technology was the market experience gained from the practical use of the previous versions as well as a close exchange with both train manufacturers and wagon developers. A key feature of NiKRASA 3.0 is the elimination of the terminal ramp, which in previous versions was required in addition to the lifting cradle for handling. Both components are now merged into one base platform.
NiKRASA 3.0 is now more flexible, easier and faster to handle. For example, the lifting cradle can be handled at any position in the terminal without preparation. In terms of handling times, there is also no longer any additional time required compared to a craneable trailer – which makes the handling process even more attractive.
Due to the use of novel manufacturing techniques, the tare weight of the new design remains well below three tons. NiKRASA is thus still the lightest solution on the market. During development, attention was also paid to being able to load the widest possible range of vehicles. In addition to classic semitrailers, silos and trailers with a fixed body, megatrailers as well as trailers without a structure and container chassis (even including containers) can be loaded. If the new lifting cradle remains empty in the wagon, swap bodies and containers can still be loaded as usual without the systems interfering with each other. The compatibility of the NiKRASA technology with the pocket wagons of various manufacturers has been further extended. For example, the new generation can be loaded in the T3000, T5 (single pocket) and in the second-generation wagons of the Kolowag company. In addition, compatibility testing is underway for the T4000 as
well as the new developments from the manufacturers Greenbrier and Talleres Alegria.
The use of NiKRASA does not result in any additional height increase. The trailer transported in this way remains at its clearance height. This means that the system complies with all valid track profiles (UIC clearance diagram) and can be used without restriction on all routes in Europe. This is one of the primary and market-deciding
benefits that separates NiKRASA from all other solutions available on the market.
NiKRASA enables the handling of non-craneable semi-trailers without changing the existing standards in the terminals, on the wagon and on the rail. According to TX Logistik, this makes the system the most economically efficient and cost-effective solution on the market. In view of the usually limited storage space capacities in the terminals, the lifting cradle has integrated holders that enable fivefold stacking without the use of additional aids. The optimized storage benefits not only the terminals, but combined transport.
Following its first presentation at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin, TX Logistik is now planning the Europe-wide market launch of NiKRASA version 3.0, which was developed in cooperation with WECON GmbH, specialist for customized KV solutions. As with its previous models, the new generation will also be freely available to the market. TX would like to contribute to the achievement of climate targets and ensure that the shift of freight from road to rail is made as easy as possible and available to anyone who is interested. At the same time, NiKRASA supports the sustainability strategy of the Mercitalia Group, which earlier this year officially committed with its subsidiaries in the ScanMed RFC (Scandinavian-Mediterranean Rail Freight Corridor) climate declaration to reduce the carbon footprint in the transport chain by promoting rail transport and to develop concrete measures to shift more freight from road to rail.
EIC ACCELERATOR TRANSMETRICS SECURES MULTIMILLION INVESTMENT FROM EIC ACCELERATOR
Transmetrics is selected amongst 74 of Europe’s high potential start-ups that will receive €382 million of grants and investments.
Transmetrics, a state-of-the-art AI platform developed exclusively for the supply chain industry, today announces that the company has been selected for investment in the ultra-competitive 2022 European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator programme. This funding will further support the development of Transmetrics’ unique AI-driven logistics optimization software and international expansion of the company.
The company intends to use the funds to continue to invest in its unique industry-wide technologies through strategic collaborations, organic growth and international expansion, and by developing innovative AI technologies to ensure the logistics networks of today and tomorrow are as efficient as they can be.
“Our team is extremely happy and proud to receive this funding, given the fierce competition. It will allow Transmetrics to accelerate the development of our innovative software, scale our new product and bring economic benefits to this tough market,” said Asparuh Koev, CoFounder and CEO of Transmetrics.
“Having superior technology now is not a guarantee for success in the long term. We’ve seen a lot of movement in the industry in the past two years and want to be prepared for different scenarios in the near future. GLOBAL SHIPPERS FORUM WHY CARGO OWNERS SHOULD BE CHECKING FOR BUGS IN BOXES

nvasive pests transferred between countries in intermodal containers have potentially devastating consequences for agriculture and the natural environment. Global Shippers Forum (GSF) is alerting shippers to the crucial role they play in tightening biosecurity in the container supply chain at the packing point
While there are various sources of potential pest contamination throughout the global freight supply chain, all involved need to take measures to minimise the potentially devastating consequences that unwanted invasive pests can deliver. The Global Shippers Forum (GSF) represents cargo owners which export and import all manner of commodities transported in seaborne containers and urges a greater awareness of the threat.
Hosted by the UK Government on 19th and 20th September a specialised group of trade bodies, shipping industry representatives and national plant protection and bio-security agencies will meet at the International Workshop on Reducing the Introduction of Pests Through the Sea Container Pathway*. GSF will be representing shippers to ensure that the scope and limits of their responsibilities are clearly defined. James Hookham its Director will be speaking during the opening session.
“We will be reviewing one of the many ways that invasive and destructive pests can pass from one country to another – by ‘hitchhiking’ a ride in, or on, any of the 240 million freight container shipments that are made by sea every year,” declares Hookham. “I believe this will be a wake-up call to all parties involved in international container shipping and logistics. In particular, the beneficial cargo owner, whether importer or exporter, who potentially exerts the most influence and control over the packer of the container, need to be aware of their responsibilities in avoiding pest infestation at
the point of loading. This assumes the packer provided with a clean container in the first place”
Inspections of containers arriving at borders carried out by national biosecurity agencies over the past few years suggest that the number of containers and cargoes infested by pests may be greater than feared. National environment and agricultural ministries have been working through the UN’s International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to tackle this issue and the London workshop has been convened to consider options for regulating the cleanliness of sea containers and an International Standard for Phytosanitary Measure for the cleanliness of intermodal containers could be in prospect.
GSF has been monitoring and influencing these developments since 2018 when it was invited to join an IPPC Task Force set up to examine the threat to plant health posed by pest-contamination of sea containers. The Task Force’s report at the end of 2021 set out a range of regulatory options for its parent body, the Commission for Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) to consider. Crucially, it also warned that implementation of new mandatory requirements could impose significant new costs and risks to the fluidity of the international movement of containers. GSF has been clear in its opposition to any new rules applying indiscriminately to every container shipment, urging that controls and resources be targeted instead on high-risk trade corridors and specific pest threats.
Hookham warns, “Shippers should not wait to be confronted with new regulations before responding to this issue. Whether acting as a buyer or a seller of goods, importer or exporter, the standards of care with which they are packed into the containers should be core to their quality checks and specifications to suppliers or contractors. Keeping bugs out of boxes is a responsibility that shippers and packers could become more accountable for in the future.”
