INTRODUCTION
Big Iron continues agricultural heritage The Big Iron Farm Show enters its 30th year with an A-to-Z showcase of agricultural products and services. During the three-day celebration of agriculture, exhibitors unveil innovative ideas while continuing the great traditions that launched the show. “We’ve tried to keep the integrity strictly farm-based,” says Gale Skjoiten, American Federal Bank, Fargo, who is this year’s Big Iron Committee chairperson. “We believe that’s helped the success of the show.” The 30th annual Big Iron Show will welcome visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 14 and 15, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at the grounds of the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo. Admission to the show is free, along with parking. Roy Faught, 96, remembers traipsing through the muddy fields of the first farm show near Casselton 30 years ago, when the idea of showcasing the latest in “big iron” took root in 1980. “It was surprising how it took off,” says Faught, who was then chairman of the Red River Valley Fair. “It’s gratifying to see this grow.” The show moved to the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in 1981, where it was called the Red River Valley Agricultural Exposition and Trade Show. Then a “big iron” phrase was coined and the Big Iron Farm Show continues today, a reflection of the evolution in the agricultural industry itself. “Anytime that you’re associated with something that’s been successful, you’re bound to be proud, but there have been many people associated with this,” Faught says. Spearheading the original committee were Jim Conn, Rich Spichke, Lynn Anderson and Dennis Humfeld.

Visit one of more than 800 exhibitors, witness a field demonstration or connect with other agricultural producers during the three days of Big Iron. “The history of the Red River Valley is so deep into agriculture; that’s what draws a lot of people. It’s also a one-stop shop for people because they’re able to come out here and see everything that’s ag-related in one area,” says General Manager Bryan Schulz Bryan Schulz. “So it’s more than just going to a trade show.” A new feature to the Big Iron Farm Show, one-pass air seeder demonstrations will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 14-15, south of the Red River Valley Racetrack. Continuing for the third year is the Red River Farm Network Issues and Events Center, which will feature candidate forums at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and discussions on ag topics each afternoon. The tent with ample seating is located at the heart of the Big Iron grounds, between the Commercial and Agriculture buildings.

Since then, the event has grown into a celebration of rural living with more than 80,000 attendees. Farming since 1945 near Absaraka, Faught plans to attend Big Iron this year, too. “I’ll be around when Big Iron comes,” he says with a laugh.

Visitors will see all types of equipment in the field at Big Iron’s demonstration areas. Daily field demonstrations will be held from 1-3 p.m. south of the Red River Valley Racetrack. Committee welcomes visitors
Putting together a topnotch show for both visitors and exhibitors is the goal of the volunteer committee that spearheads Big Iron. “We’re expecting another good show,” Skjoiten predicts. With a hands-on attitude, Big Iron offers visitors a good look at equipment. Farmers can test drive display tractors or ask questions during field demonstrations of various equipment, as well as see some equipment unveiled during the show. All exhibitors themselves, the Big Iron Committee members represent a sampling of agribusinesses in the region. The North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension Service is hosting air seeder field demonstrations Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Sept. 14 and 15, during Big Iron. The field demonstrations will highlight “one-pass” air seeder demonstrations. “One-pass” air seeders are capable of placing seeds and some fertilizer together in the soil, while placing most of the nitrogen fertilizer in a separate zone in the soil. The demonstrations are scheduled from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. Seven companies are planning to demonstrate air seeders. “Increasingly, farmers in the Central Plains and Midwest are reducing the field operations in growing crops,” said John Nowatzki, ag machine systems specialist with the NDSU Extension Service. “One-pass air seeders allow farmers to eliminate tillage for seedbed preparation, saving time, fuel and wear on equipment. Reduced tillage tends to minimize both soil erosion potential and carbon loss” he explained. The field demonstrations will be conducted in wheat stubble in the field located directly south of the Red River Valley Fairgrounds racetrack, and will begin with a 20-minute introductory session on the importance of seed and fertilizer placement for plant growth and development. Prior to each air seeder demonstration, company representatives will be asked to describe the features of their machine. by Jeff Zent In September, North Dakota will host a large delegation of international guests who will attend the 2010 Big Iron Farm Show and other events designed to promote the global sale of North Dakota agricultural equipment. More than 100 buyers of farm and ranch equipment and livestock are expected to attend the Big Iron Farm Show’s International Visitors Program Sept. 13-17. To participate in the program, the visitors will travel from more than 10 countries, including Russia, Mexico, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Ukraine, Canada, Uruguay and South Africa. “We continue to build and improve on the program because it has proven effective in developing lasting business relationships with key buyers from around the world,” North Dakota Trade Office Executive Director Dean Gorder said. “We look forward to hosting a large delegation again this year and to expanding our companies’ global business opportunities.” The program is coordinated by the N.D. Trade Office and the U.S. Commercial Service. During their weeklong stay, international guests will attend farm and ranch tours, educational seminars, equipment demonstrations and other events designed to connect buyers from around the world with North Dakota’s farm equipment manufacturers and dealers. At Big Iron, the Trade Office manages the International Visitors Pavilion, where guests can meet with local company reps in private meeting rooms, attend educational seminars, enjoy meals and refreshments and access the Internet to facilitate their business. “The program has helped us expand our international dealership network and increased our sales by getting buyers in front of our equipment,” said Laurens Robinson, director of international sales for Jamestown-based Haybuster agricultural equipment. Registered guests include Petr Bochazov, general director of New Century Holdings’ Penza region. Headquartered in New York, New Century Holdings farms nearly 2 million acres in Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Russia. “Our visitors are coming here because they want to become better equipped and more knowledgeable about large-scale farming and ranching,” said Heather Ranck, a Fargo-based international trade specialist with the U.S. Commercial Service. “This program enables us to show the world North Dakota’s agricultural expertise and it gets our equipment manufacturers and dealers in front of serious buyers,” Ranck said. Drangsholt began farming with his father, Erling, in 1983, when he was still a student at North Dakota State College of Science, majoring in agribusiness. Since Erling died four years ago, Wayne employs a hired hand. He raises sunflowers, soybeans, wheat, barley and peas north of Mohall. He and his wife, Chrisanne, live in a home they built about a mile from the family farmstead. Overall, Drangsholt is looking forward to a good season for farming and another trip in September to Big Iron. Candi Helseth is co-owner of WriteDesign in Minot.
