HAVE THE BEATLES BEEN TAKING STYLE NOTES FROM MEON VOICES?

The iconic Beatles statues in Liverpool were recently spotted sporting stylish gold scarves, and while we’re not claiming influence, Meon Voices can’t help but smile. After all, the choir unveiled its own striking gold scarves at its Christmas concert in December 2025.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But it neatly reflects a choir that’s going from strength to strength.

Over the past year, Meon Voices has refreshed its image with a new logo, a new choir leader, a new Chair and a new performance look, alongside continued musical development and growing confidence. The choir has also welcomed a number of new members this term, so many, in fact, that there’s now a waiting list.

Meon Voices is always happy to hear from prospective singers who would like to join the waiting list and be part of a friendly, ambitious choir with plenty of momentum.

Gold scarves supplied. A love of singing and enthusiasm essential.

MEON VALLEY LIONS NEWS

Santa out and about in the Meon Valley

The run-up to Christmas has always been a period when the Lions are extremely busy, whether it be fundraising with our Santa Claus trips through the local villages or distributing charity to those in need in the local community.

Our Christmas collections with Santa out in his new sleigh, started in earnest in December - thanks for ALL your donations, it makes a big difference to people’s lives in the Meon Valley. The Club also supported Boundary Oak School Christmas Fayre, the Christmas Fayre at the Wickham Community Centre, Home Start, The Gateway at Bishop’s Waltham and the Knowle Village Carol Service.

In addition to helping Santa with his Sleigh the minibus has been busy taking revellers back and forth to their various Christmas celebrations including the Monday Lunch Club at Wickham the community Centre, Open Sight, and relatives to attend the Early Birds Pre-School in Newtown.

Supporting the unsung heroes of the Meon Valley

The Food Bank are some of the unsung heroes in our area providing essential help when people need it, often when they have nowhere else to turn. We were proud to provide them with boxes of Chocolates to give to local people with a note from the Club asking that if anyone needs help, they should get in touch.

Meon Valley Lions Club, following consultation with Age Concern, provided hampers to local needy residents. It was our great pleasure to give just a little Christmas cheer to the loneliest and financially pressed residents of our area. As you can imagine these hampers are well received and make a huge difference, especially at this time of year; without the support of the Lions and all the local people who support us we wouldn’t be able to do this so we would like to say a special thank you to everyone for the generous support throughout the year.

St Swithun’s Prep Welcomes New Head of Sport, Kat Shoesmith

St Swithun’s Prep School is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Head of Sport, Kat Shoesmith, who brings nearly 20 years of teaching expertise across the UK and Malaysia.

Kat undertook her BA (Hons) in Physical Education at the University of Chichester and began her career at Grays Convent High School, an all-girls’ school in Essex, where she spent eight years as Head of Department. She later worked for seven years in Malaysia across two international schools - Garden International School and The Alice Smith School - teaching pupils from Early Years in prep through to Year 13.

Her own sporting background includes competitive gymnastics, regional level rugby at university and, more recently, adult netball in the Southampton Margaret Whittaker League.

Kat’s vision for sport at St Swithun’s Prep is a purposeful and positive culture. “My job is to inspire a generation who love being healthy and active through the medium of sport. I want girls to leave school with the tools and confidence to look after their health and wellbeing long after their school years.”

The new head of sport aims to strengthen the school’s already well-established sports provision. “My goal is a well-rounded curriculum that means girls are exposed to as many activities as possible,” she explains. “This way each student can discover a form of movement they enjoy, helping them build the foundations of a healthy and active life that is sustainable.”

St Swithun’s Prep believes participation in sport has long-term benefits for girls’ futures. Research shows that a significant proportion of female CEOs played sport in their youth (Forbes 2022) and we see sport as an opportunity to strengthen the future projection of each student, with a byproduct of essential life skills such as teamwork and resilience.

Reflecting on her approach to encouraging young girls to play sport, Kat says, “Don’t be afraid of failure – that’s where the magic happens.” She believes that failure is not falling but choosing not to get back up.

Liz Norris, Head of St Swithun’s Prep said, “We are delighted to have Kat championing

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Beep-beep. The car behind was tooting its horn.

“If I’d gone on amber, he’d have been jumping the red!” Himself was indignance personified.

“I know…”

“And if he’d jumped the red and met oncoming traffic on the single lane, then what would he have done? Engage his Pegasus engines and make like a Harrier jump jet?” Himself was cross. She knew the signs; the tips of his ears had taken on a crimson tinge.

“Unlikely...” Soothingly, she patted the hand that rested on the gearstick. The light turned to green and they duly negotiated the roadworks and reached the High Street. Himself’s ears had resumed their usual hue as he turned to her and said, “You’re very quiet. Are you alright?”

“Yes, I was just thinking about the couples’ Valentine’s quiz. We’ll be OK if there’s a whole round on your speciality subject: ‘Rolls Royce military aircraft engines from WWII to 1959’, but it’s a tiny bit specific and a little unlikely. Sorry Darling.”

“That’s a shame.” Himself looked crestfallen.

“But there is a Mr & Mrs round. I think we’ll do really well at that. We know all there is to know about each other after all these years.”

“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather have a romantic dinner à deux instead of going to a pub quiz?”

“No thank you, besides, I think it’ll make a nice change.” Over the years, they’d eaten out on Valentine’s night many times; a tale of stressed kitchens and glum couples in silence. Worst of all was the hard sell at your table; apparently nothing said ‘Be Mine’ like an over-priced red rose in a plastic tube. “Time to mix it up,” she said as they braved the shops. They’d agreed upon no sentiment-filled cards and no expensive blooms for each other for Valentine’s day – but in their quest for a birthday card and some non-romantic flowers for a friend, they were presented with a red sea of hearts and roses.

“It’ll be fresh Spring colours and Easter eggs everywhere next week, once Valentine’s out of the way,” Himself muttered, rummaging amongst the bunches of red rosebuds to find a bouquet that didn’t scream ‘I Love You’.

“And I’ll be quite happy with that. Red’s my least favourite colour.”

“Is it?” She wondered how she didn’t know that about him, as she located a small corner of the card display crammed with all the non-Valentine

cards. Birth, Marriage, Get Well and In Sympathy jostled untidily for position with the Birthday cards. All life is here, she thought as she selected the only non-alcohol-related card for their tea-total friend. Nodding approval at the freesia and carnation bouquet Himself had selected, she said in passing, “She’ll love them. They’re beautiful and, like me, she doesn’t like roses.”

“Really?” Himself frowned. All these years, had he been oblivious?

“Yes, I thought you knew. You’ve never bought me roses and I’ve always appreciated that.” It gets worse, he thought – both oblivious and unromantic.

Valentine’s evening came complete with matching colds that put paid to their quiz. “Knowing us, we caught this during our foray to the shops. No pub grub for us - but feed a cold, my mum would have said, so we should eat,” she announced and they shuffled snuffily off to the kitchen to make some dinner.

Head and shoulders in the fridge she called out, “It’s probably just as well we didn’t go to the quiz, the Mr & Mrs round might have been a disaster.” She closed the fridge door. “Seems I don’t know you as well as I thought. Since when have you disliked red?”

“Always. And I didn’t know you didn’t like roses.”

They looked at each other appraisingly and with fresh eyes. Just for a moment they returned to a time when she knew nothing about him, nor he her.

“Well, that was exciting,” she said, “we thought we knew all there is to know about each other. And we didn’t - but now we do. We’ll have another shot at the quiz next year.”

Himself agreed. “Aha! Well, knowing you as I do, there are some Roses of the Cadbury variety that I’m confident you love.” Withdrawing a hand from behind his back, Himself produced a box of chocolates.

“Aha! And knowing you as I do, there’s something red of the meat variety that I’m certain you love as well,” she said as she unwrapped a large piece of steak.

Over dinner, Himself gazed into her eyes and confessed, “I don’t like roses either. Maybe that’s the real reason I never bought you any.”

“No way! Well, now I think about it, I’m not a fan of red myself...”

COMMUNITY

PROTECTING OUR COUNTRY FROM THREATS ABROAD AND ONLINE

2026 is just getting started and already we’re dealing with new challenges both in our local communities, online and on the world stage.

As Mental Health spokesperson, I am launching a campaign to take on the threat from unregulated AI chatbots. I asked the Health Secretary on the risks posed by chatbots to young people. The response was frankly alarming - his department admitted that they have made no assessment on the number of unregulated chatbots providing mental health advice to children, nor have they committed to reviewing this.

Telling children to just “be careful” with unregulated, misleading and potentially dangerous new technology is simply not good enough. That is why I will be continuing to push the Government for stronger regulation on chatbots and AI tools.

We’ve also seen the atrocious behaviour of Elon Musk’s ‘Grok’ AI repeatedly generating abusive images. I think it’s long past the time we all stopped using his social media platforms and I urge the Government and Ofcom to take serious action.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR MAYOR OF WINCHESTER’S COMMUNITY AWARDS

The search is on for individuals and organisations who have made a real difference in the Winchester district.

Nominations for the annual Mayor of Winchester’s Community Awards are now open, offering an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others.

The closing date for nominations is 15 February 2026. The awards will take place on 12 March 2026 in Guildhall Winchester.

The Mayor of Winchester Cllr Sudhakar Achwal said: “Our community is built on the quiet dedication of people who ask for nothing in return, often working behind the scenes to help others. These awards give us the opportunity to shine a light on those

I visited British NATO forces in Estonia close to the Russian border, keeping watch throughout the winter months. The RussiaUkraine war continues and tensions are building around the world. An emboldened Trump has been making new threats over Greenland. It has become increasingly important that we work with our allies to prevent escalation and bring these threats and wars to an end.

In Parliament, I highlighted to the Government the terrible plight of over 20,000 Ukrainian children abducted by Russia during its invasion. For this act alone, Putin should be hauled in front of the International Criminal Court.

Back at home, small businesses are under threat. Not only are they facing high costs for energy and rent, but now they’re facing the prospect of even more tax rises. On top

of higher national insurance contributions, changes to business rates could bring extra costs to even more small businesses.

Even well managed and popular hospitality businesses like pubs and restaurants, of which there are many in and around Winchester, are at risk of having to close down. This government's decision to place the tax burden on so many small businesses was the wrong choice. They need to change course quickly before we see thousands more pub closures across the country. It is absolutely urgent for Ministers to provide clarity to pubs, hospitality and high street businesses, with rumours circulating that the Government may be planning to reduce rises to business rates.

I’m really proud of the Liberal Democrats’ calls for a cut to VAT for hospitality. That would help small businesses keep operating, and keep prices down for customers who, with the cost of living crisis, often cut back on going out as a way of saving. We want to see our community thriving and our economy growing and this is just one measure that would really help achieve that.

unsung heroes and to say a sincere ‘thank you’ for the kindness, compassion and strength they bring to our lives.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment to nominate someone who makes a real difference; let’s ensure their hard work and generosity receives the recognition it truly deserves.”

To nominate a person or organisation, you can find out more and complete the online form on the Winchester City Council website at: https://www.winchester.gov.uk/councillors-

The next Mayor of Winchester Supported Charity events are also now on sale. These include a talk on Agatha Christie by former Mayor Angela Clear, a chamber music performance by the St Giles Ensemble, the popular annual Quiz Night featuring Kevin Ashman and a talk by Lady Alison Wakeham on her time working for Margaret Thatcher during the 1970s. Top things to consider when designing a shower space

WITH BATHROOM DESIGN SPECIALIST RIPPLES.

With over 35 years experience designing bathrooms, the team at Ripples understands that the process can sometimes be daunting. Its designers are experts on all aspects of bathrooms and here, Designer Tyler, from Ripples Bishop’s Waltham, discusses the top things to consider when designing a shower space.

Firstly, think about whether you want a shower enclosure or a more open space with a shower screen.

If you’re opting for an enclosure, consider which shape will work best to utilise the space available. If you go for shower glass, think about which style you like, whether that be Crittall-style, fluted or the emerging trend, etched.

Additionally, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise energy and water consumption. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fi tted with a fl ow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each fl ow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption but still offer a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

Secondly, think about the space. If room is tight within a shower area, concealed fi ttings are the perfect choice. By hiding the pipes within the wall cavity, the fi ttings sit fl ush to the wall, reducing the possibility of bumping into them when showering and creating a sleek fi nished look.

You can create additional in-shower storage by utilising the void in a stud or false wall to build alcoves for storing shower products, in turn maximising space on the floor.

MEON VOICES’ CHRISTMAS CONCERT RAISES £774 FOR TWO LOCAL CHURCHES

The Meon Voices’ 2025 Christmas Concert at St Peter’s Church, Bishop’s Waltham, was their most successful yet, with the audience filling the church to capacity and beyond. The uplifting programme raised not only the roof but also £774, which was shared between St Peter’s Church and the United Free Church in Bishop’s Waltham, where Meon Voices rehearse each week.

The benefits of singing in a choir are well known. In fact, a December article in The Guardian revealed that actor and writer James Corden was so inspired by the joy his mother found in her choir that he teamed up with writing partner Ruth Jones to create a new comedy drama, The Choir.

If you feel it might be time to join a choir yourself, the popular Meon Voices Choir resumes its Monday evening rehearsals on 12 January 2026, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, at the United Free Church, Lower Basingwell Street, Bishop’s Waltham SO32 1AL.

Democracy in actionAn election every year - or

is

boredom setting in?

Recently HMG asked local authorities if they wanted to postpone their planned election in May - already postponed - for another year. Our local politicians debated this and concluded that it would not be good for democracy hence have fed back to Whitehall that they would like the elections to go ahead. If this sticks there will be elections this coming May for the County Council and some Districts, next May will see the election to the “shadow” new Unitary Councils and the year after the election for a Mayor for Hampshire and the Solent – with the new Councils in full swing.

The debate about the future shape of local government in Hampshire including the election of a Mayor has not really got the heart racing. Hopefully as many people as possible have responded to the consultation on what shape the new Unitary Councils will take. I may be wrong , but I fear that there has not been an overwhelming response. As for the elections, generally, unless local government elections fall on the same day as a General Election only between 30% to 40 % of voters go out and mark their cross.

On the issue of engaging people in the debate about local government reorganisationsfor most people as long as the dustbins get emptied, the schools keep going, the parks remain open as do the libraries and the potholes eventually get filled etc. etc. there is little or no interest about who is responsible. The current debate about the geographical shape of the new Councils has seen a little more debate as besides people being wary of change most remain loyal to the closest set up to where they live. We now await a pronouncement from HMG as to the geographical shape of the new all singing and dancing Councils.

Some argue that this string of elections although being worthy, in practice, may see a steady decline in voter participation. Hopefully the political parties will make a real effort to ensure the word gets out to all corners on the County. Also, that they offer a coherent vision of what and how they would run the new Councils. These new Councils will be with us well aften the next general election hence just “name calling” or “blaming the Government of the day” will not be enough. As illustrated by the evidence of Councils recently elected, they have found

when they get into power there are really difficult matters that need tackling; like remaining solvent, the rising costs of social care and ensuring that those services that make a real difference to the quality of life are not slashed even more.

In the end all this change depends on the quality and the commitment of individuals. It is vital that the Councillors that we elect have a good blend of new enthusiastic people and those with experience and knowledge. Setting up new bodies is an opportunity to think creatively about how services are delivered and a chance to tackle the “same old same old”. It will be the hard-pressed Council staff that will have to do all this – including organising election after election. Some may decide it’s the right time to jump ship others will relish the challenge. But please spare a thought for how they must feel as this process grinds on.

Resilience and focus on getting this right must be at the forefront of how all the political parties in our beloved County face these elections. The throwing of tired political slogans will not be enough.

CARE QUALITY COMMISSIONURGENT AND EMERGENCY CARE SURVEY 2026

This Trust is carrying out a survey to find out what patients think about our urgent and emergency care. This survey is part of the national CQC survey programme to improve quality of care and patient experience. We will work with our staff and patients to use the feedback from this survey to help improve patient’s experiences of the care we provide.

Patients aged 16 years and over who have received care from our Minor Injuries Unit at Andover War Memorial Hospital or Urgent Treatment Centre at Basingstoke in January and February 2026, and our emergency departments at either Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital or Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester in February 2026, they may receive a survey asking questions about their experience. They will be asked about various aspects of their care, including waiting times, the quality of care and treatment, tests, discharge, medications and information.

An external survey contractor, Picker, is administering the survey on behalf of the Trust as an approved contractor for the CQC survey so that people’s responses are anonymous. Obtaining feedback from patients and taking account of their views is really important for bringing about improvements in the care we provide and understanding what really matters to our patients.

Taking part in the survey is voluntary and all answers are confidential.

If you do not wish to take part, or have any questions about the survey please contact our PALS and Complaints team on 01256 486766 or via palsandcomplaints@hhft.nhs.uk

HEARING YOUR GOAL FOR 2026

HEARING LOSS typically develops gradually, making it easy to dismiss early warning signs. You might find yourself thinking, 'Everyone mumbles these days,' or 'The sound quality on TVs isn't what it used to be.'

Here are common signs that it might be time for a hearing assessment:

• Do You frequently ask people to repeat themselves?

• Do You turn up the TV or radio volume higher than others prefer?

• Do You struggle to follow conversations in noisy environments?

• Do You find phone conversations difficult to understand?

• Do You mishear words or respond inappropriately in conversations?

• Do You feel exhausted after social events from the effort of listening?

• Do Family members comment that you don't hear them calling?

• Do You avoid group conversations or social situations?

• Do You struggle to hear children's or women's voices?

• Do You miss sounds like birdsong, doorbells, or timers?

• Do You experience ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus?)

If several of these sound familiar, a comprehensive hearing assessment can provide clarity and, if needed, open the door to solutions that will help you reconnect with the world around you.

No — it’s completely painless and comfortable, takes just 8 minutes, and has no downtime.

Weekly sessions for three weeks are recommended.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)

Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life. But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.

Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.

From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need. Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.

The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.

What is Ultra Femme 360?

Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.

Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?

This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.

Does the treatment hurt?

We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.

We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.

The true power of financial planning

Trying to make the most of your money is no easy task. Researching your options, understanding the details, and putting a plan together can be time consuming and complicated.

This is where a skilled financial planner can prove invaluable. They can help you in several key areas:

• Pensions and retirement planning: understand how much you need for a comfortable retirement and create a resilient, tax-efficient plan aligned to your long-term ambitions.

• Inheritance and estate planning: carefully analyse your long-term needs and your succession plan to align the distribution of your assets according to your wishes.

• Financial protection: safeguard your family, loved ones, and business interests.

• Investing: helping you make your money work harder with expert investment management.

Planning that powers your ideas

To create a financial plan that gives your ambitions the best chance of success, working with a skilled financial planner is crucial. They have the expertise to consider your circumstances and create a personalised plan built around your values and goals.

They’ll ask about your family, career, lifestyle and property to understand your life and priorities. Using cashflow modelling, they can use this information to make specific recommendations and answer big questions such as:

• How much is enough to retire?

• How can I protect my family wealth for successive generations?

• How much should I gift – and when and how?

• How do I secure financial support for my family when I’m no longer around?

The

financial planning process

A financial planner’s approach is typically a straightforward, step-by-step process:

1. Getting to know you: spending time understanding your goals and objectives to inform a personalised plan.

2. Examining your options: analysing your situation and providing a detailed recommendation.

3. Agreeing the plan: discussing the plan with you and ensuring you understand and are comfortable with the approach.

4. Putting the plan into practice: implementing the agreed-upon plan, taking the administrative burden away from you.

5. Reviewing the plan: discussing the plan with you annually to ensure it remains aligned with your goals and objectives.

By taking control of your financial future and seeking the guidance and ideas of a skilled financial planner, you can unlock the full potential of your resources to help you achieve your goals with confidence.

We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

BISHOP’S WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB (BWGC)

Our Albany Road shop at the allotments opened to members on Saturday 31 January (10-12 as usual) and will continue until the end of October. Our first task as gardeners will be to choose our potatoes. Shall we choose first or second earlies or maincrop? Shall we grow in those handy ‘potato bags’ and grow them on the patio perhaps – it’s a nice way of getting youngsters involved, too? If we prepared the ground last Autumn, the potatoes should be ready to plant in March when the soil will be a bit warmer.

However, our first task is to ‘chit’ them by rubbing out all but 4 or 5 (at one end) of the little shoots and putting them in an egg box in a cool, light place. This gives them a good start so they can get going quickly when you plant them. The ‘earlies’ (which we can call ‘salad potatoes’) should be ready in June, with the maincrop in August (they crop much heavier) As frosts can, of course, still be a danger until late May, we rake up soil over the emerging green shoots to protect them – we call it ‘earthing up’- and also protect the potatoes from light as they are poisonous when exposed to light and turn green. Generally, it’s a trouble-free crop but they do need feeding with well-rotted manure or mushroom compost, and a bit of potato fertiliser, Growmore or a general fertiliser can help in small quantities. They will need watering in dry weather.

We can also plant onion sets. These ‘sets’ are onions that have been grown on to a size that’s easy to handle. Again, they are generally no problem (although until they get their roots going, birds can sometime pull them out of the ground!) and keep them weed-free.

Dahlias and Begonia tubers can be started in a light and frost-free place. Put them in pots or trays of compost but don’t completely cover them with compost. After a while, they will produce shoots and the Dahlias shoots can be cut off with a bit of the tuber. They can then be put into posts, grown on and increase your Dahlia stock! These handsome plants with their varied flowers are so welcome later in the year until the frosts hit them.

Gardeners are an impatient bunch, and a bit of sunshine gets our green fingers twitching like mad! However, always remember that it’s the temperature of the soil that matters to seeds! Whatever you do, have a great gardening year ahead, and why not join us and increase your fun of gardening. Don’t miss our monthly ‘Speaker Events’ at St Peter’s Church Hall in Free Street, and which will be advertised on our website: https:// www.bwgc.org.uk/Whats-On/

Vital step forward in placemaking review for National Park

The process of reviewing the South Downs National Park’s Local Plan has moved another step forward with the completion of some key background studies around potential housing growth.

Following a major consultation earlier this year, the National Park Authority is now gearing up for the next consultation on the Local Plan Review in May 2026.

The award-winning South Downs Local Plan is being updated to ensure it addresses important issues such as nature recovery, climate change, affordable housing and helping local communities thrive. The revised Local Plan will enable appropriate growth in the National Park and will have a big focus on placemaking for all.

As part of the statutory process set out by Government, the Authority has to complete a number of background studies and some of these have now been published. They are evidence-based documents, rather than decisions, but will help guide the next version of the Local Plan going out for public consultation next year.

The first key document is the Land Availability Assessment (LAA) which has assessed the suitability, availability, and achievability of about 800 sites across the South Downs National Park. It comes after hundreds of sites were identified or put forward by agents, landowners and local communities to be considered for development opportunities. The LAA has recommended whether a site “has potential” for – or should be “rejected” or “excluded” from – further consideration in the South Downs Local Plan Review.

The LAA includes an online interactive map so that communities and site promoters can see which sites have been assessed and considered. The LAA does not determine whether a site should be allocated for development, but rather

provides an information hub to help identify potential sites for further consideration in the South Downs Local Plan Review. Subject to further technical work, it’s then for the South Downs Local Plan Review – or any future Neighbourhood Development Plans – to determine which sites should be allocated for future development.

Meanwhile, the evidence on housing needs has been updated in two studies. The National Park Authority believes the appropriate housing need figure for the South Downs is 323 homes per year – or 5,814 new homes between 2024 and 2042. This assessment of housing need is just a starting point as the Local Plan Review will need to take into account the statutory purposes of the National Park – the primary purpose laid out in law being to conserve and enhance its natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage.

Tim Slaney, Director of Planning for the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “This Local Plan Review is the framework for the future of this incredible National Park. It shapes where and how development takes place, ensuring we conserve and enhance its wonderful landscape, provide for the needs of local communities, and conserve and enhance wildlife and heritage. In this way we can enable villages and towns to flourish. As always it’s about the right development, in the right place, and ensuring benefits flow from this, whether that be affordable housing, employment opportunities, new community facilities, infrastructure, or new habitats for wildlife.

“It’s really important to stress that these background studies are purely starting points to help inform the next stages of the Local Plan Review and no decisions have been made. There’s still a long way to go, but we’re making really good progress on the various formal stages of the process.

“We’re looking forward to engaging further with the public, parishes, landowners and partner organisations over the coming months as we gear up for the next consultation in May.”

Submission of the revised Local Plan to the Government’s Planning Inspectorate is expected in the autumn of 2026 and full adoption as planning policy by the National Park Authority in 2027.

The Local Plan Review and the various evidence documents can be viewed at: www.southdowns.gov.uk/planning-policy/thesouth-downs-local-plan-review/

• Earlier this year more than 1,000 people visited 20 consultation events across the National Park and over 10,400 people viewed the online consultation. More than 1,900 individuals responded to the consultation, making 3,714 separate comments.

• All the feedback so far will be considered as the Authority prepares the next stage of the Local Plan Review, with the second public consultation taking place between May and July 2026.

• The current Local Plan is available to read at: www.southdowns.gov.uk/planning-policy/southdowns-local-plan/local-plan/

• The South Downs National Park has one of the most unique built environments within a protected landscape in the UK. As Britain’s most populated National Park with over 113,000 residents, it spans 15 different local authority areas across three counties and has four bustling market towns. It boasts 167 conservation areas – more than any other National Park in the UK – as well as 18 distinctive landscape types, over 1,000 designated spaces for wildlife and well over 5,800 listed buildings. Dealing with around 5,000 planning cases a year, the National Park is one of the country’s top 30 busiest Planning Authorities.

YINKA SHONIBARE

CBE RA: PATTERNS OF POWER

The latest art exhibition arriving at The Gallery in The Arc, Winchester is Yinka Shonibare CBE RA: Patterns of Power. The exhibition will run from Saturday 14 February to Wednesday 3 June.

A selection of artworks spanning 20 years of the artist’s career, including 40 woodblocks and screenprints, and featuring The Crowning (2007), a large-scale sculpture on loan from the Arts Council Collection. This witty, sumptuous piece, shows the critical crossexamining of contemporary and historic sensibilities for which Shonibare is famed.

Shonibare is a Royal Academician and internationally acclaimed artist who explores and confronts history and identity, often through the lens of art history and its figures of cultural power. In reference to complex relations between Africa and Europe, the artist reworks his signature motif of Batik fabric, itself a product of coloniality, into gripping and playful mixed media works.

Helios artwork by artist Luke Jerram is coming to Winchester for the first time to brighten up your year. Visit Winchester Cathedral to marvel at its beauty or join one of the many events and activities that will be taking place in the sunshine, from pilates and musical performances to silent discos and after hours viewings. The exhibit will be in place from the beginning of February until Sunday 1 March 2026.

'The imagery for the artwork has been compiled using approximately 400,000 photographs of the Sun provided by Astrophotographer Dr Stuart Green (taken between May 2018 to June 2024) and NASA observations of the Sun, with guidance from solar scientist, Professor Lucie Green of University College London (UCL). The sculpture also features the source of the solar flares which caused the Northern lights to be visible from the UK in May 2024'.
