15 Years of PA Life...

Looking back at the colourful journey of PA Life from the very first issue to the leading media platform for the UK assistant community that it is today…

Our tagline and motto of ‘creating relationships between PAs, EAs and corporate bookers and their industry suppliers’ is still as accurate as it was 15 years ago when the very first PA Life magazines landed on the desks of our readers. Today, 75 print issues, and a vast website with hundreds of pages and articles later, we are still just as committed to delivering the most up-to-date professional advice and relevant industry news for the business support community.

Events are an equally important part of PA Life. We enjoy bringing people together, be it in our highly focused forums and summits where EAs, PAs and other corporate buyers can meet with relevant suppliers, or FAM Trips for our Club members who are invited to visit event venues, accommodation options and other suppliers.

The first issue of PA Life

The very first issue of PA Life dates back to November 2011 – on the right is a copy of the cover.

The workplace, and the assistant roles, were very di erent back then when typing was still one of the key skills.

PA Profile becomes a permanent fixture

The PA Profile made its debut with Stuart Martin, EA to Leigh Thomas, CEO of Dare in the March/ April 2015 Issue and has been a regular interview in every edition since. We also publish the PA Profiles online so you can look back over the years to see who’s made it to the coveted pages.

The Club for the assistant community PA Life Club has been at the core of our community almost as long as PA Life itself – launching a year after the magazine. Our members enjoy their own pages both in print and online. For assistants serious about their professional growth, including the all important event planning and management side of their role, the PA Life Club is the network to join – and it’s free.

WHAT YOU MISSED…

Top hospitality at Emirates Old Tra ord Cricket Ground

PA Life Club members visited Emirates Old Tra ord Cricket Ground on 29th May, and stayed overnight at the on-site Hilton Garden Inn for a full residential event experience. We enjoyed a great afternoon of fantastic hospitality as guests of the iconic stadium venue. There is so much Greater

Manchester has to o er to both leisure and business travellers, so our wonderful hosts took us a luxury minibus tour across the di erent areas and treated us to an amazing afternoon tea at The Stock Exchange hotel.

The day finished with us watching a T20 match and dining at an Executive Box.

PA Life Club we delighted to team up with the New Forest hotel group who invited a group of our members for a memorable day and overnight stay on 4-5 June. The team at Beaulieu Inn were great hosts to the EAs and PAs who enjoyed athe immersive familiarisation visit and showcase of the very best of the New Forest as a destination for meetings, events and team-building experiences.

The day began with highenergy team building in The Cube Experience and was followed by a traditional afternoon tea in Taylors Bar, plus a hands-on chocolatemaking masterclass before heading outdoors with Hugh from Haunted New Forest for a guided walk combining local folklore and history.

A delicious dinner of seasonal dishes, plus a calming sound bath finished the perfect day.

Oxford’s finest historic venues

Our evening as guests of two of Oxford’s grand historic venues on 8 June started at the Bodleian Library where PA Life Club’s event organiser members were welcomed at the Divinity School. It was a great way to meet the venue team over a wonderful selection of canapés, served by their local catering partner, Oxford Fine Dining, and summer-themed cocktails supplied by the Shaker bar.

The space was set up with a table display showcasing inspiration for dinners, with Fabulous Flowers behind the gorgoues floral decorations.

A short walk over to Ashmolean Museum, one of Oxford’s most distinctive event venues after hours, for a tour of the Museum’s unique spaces, including the Rooftop Restaurant with fantastic views across the City of dreaming spires.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham as a venue and o ers a great variety of unique event spaces including the HMS Ganet, The Royal Dockyard Church, now a beautifully restored theatre space, a contemporaty gallery in the No.1 Smithery and the Museum Square - a large outdoor space.

PA Life Club FAM Trip to The Historic Dockyard Chatham culminated at the opening of the former naval site’s flagship building – the Commissioner’s House, which dates back to 1704. The occasion felt even more special after we had seen the BBC South East coverage of the reopening earlier that day.

This historic gem is less than an hour from London

We spotted the car used in the much-loved TV series Call the Midwife, the dockyard is the o cial filming location.

Exploring

We explored corporate event options at Leeds Castle

A group of PA Life Club members spent a truly wonderful afternoon on 14 July as guests of Leeds Castle in Kent, exploring the varied spaces and styles in which to host memorable corporate events, with or without accommodtion. We also had a chance to enjoy English Sparkling wine from Kent. The 900 year old castle

is steeped in glamorous history, filled with strong and visionary women, including nine Queens, and is often referred to as Her Castle.

The castle and the Maiden’s Tower next to it hold the most magnificent dining and meeting spaces. You can take over both properties and enjoy it all in complete privacy.

A wonderful afternoon up in PocketSquare Skyline Bar

15 of our EA and PA members gathered for a hot afternoon on July 15th for a rooftop lunch experience at PocketSquare Skyline Rooftop Bar & Terrace at Hyatt Place London City East

Just moments from Old Street station, it was easy to spot the terrace oasis high above the street. We headed straight to the rooftop bar to meet the event team and order our first cocktails. Moments later beautifully presented canapes appeared - the fantastic food just kept

coming throughout the afternoon, as did the lavish cocktails. The rooftop bar is a fantastic space for drinks receptions and events for up to 80 people. And when the rains arrive, the indoor area is a great choice too.

We were impressed with the hotel’s fresh event spaces letting in natural light, specious guestrooms - some come with terraces even, and the Sotto Cusina restaurant and The Orangerie private dining area which works well for meetings too.

The London Venues Summit was once again a successful day praised by attendees for its great organisation and the work that goes into ensuring the corporate byers who attend are able to meet with the right suppliers who match their requirements.

The July 13th event at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms kicked o with Liz Taylor, Founder of Taylor

Lynn Corporation, whose talk on ‘Access All Areas: The future of luxury event management ‘was inspiring and well-received. Chris Hines MBE, an environmental campaigner, writer and speaker delivered a thoughtprovoking talk on ‘Venues for a better world’. The interactive Quick Fire session with ClueGo’s MD James Carruthers was a great hit too.

We enjoyed superb hospitality at Radisson Blu Bloomsbury the fantastic venue team.

PA Life Club’s FAM Trip on 30 June was a wonderful introduction to one of Bloomsbury’s deluxe hotels, the Radisson Blu Bloomsbury. The stylish event spaces, beautifully refurbished bedrooms, and the Bloomsbury Street Kitchen were an absolute delight to visit, made all the more memorable by the warm hospitality we received from

The invitation for this Club FAM Trip was aimed at our members who are looking for a central London hotel with impressive event spaces to host a meeting or event. The evening delivered a chance to experience just that, and more.

It’s located a short stroll away from Covent Garden and the British Museum.

WORK&LIFE

Hayley Taylor

VA and Founder of Peak Lifestyle Management and Tihi Travel

We sat down with Hayley Taylor, founder of Peak Lifestyle Management (PLM) and Tihi Travel. Hayley launched PLM in 2021 alongside a full-time role and transitioned into the business full-time in 2023. What began as a solo venture has grown into a team supporting business owners, executives and high-net-worth individuals with business operations, lifestyle management and travel services. In 2025, Hayley won the Virtual Assistant Star Award at the PA Life Star Awards, recognising her commitment to raising standards within the VA profession…

Congratulations on winning the Virtual Assistant Star at the PA Life Star Awards 2025! Has this professional recognition been of benefit to you?

Absolutely. Winning the award gave me confidence that the work we do is making a real impact. It has increased awareness of PLM, opened doors to new opportunities and strengthened credibility with prospective clients. Most importantly, it highlighted the value that skilled VAs bring to businesses and individuals.

Has running your own business been what you expected?

Not at all! I expected flexibility and freedom, but I underestimated the resilience required. Running a business is incredibly rewarding, but it comes with responsibility, uncertainty and a lot of learning. The reality is very di erent from social media portrayals, but I wouldn’t change it.

What are the biggest challenges of

running a VA business?

Growth without compromising quality. Our reputation is built on trust, relationships and delivering exceptional support. As demand increases, ensuring clients continue to receive the same high standards while building systems, processes and a team is always front of mind.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given, and do you have a favourite quote?

The best advice was: “Done is better than perfect.” As someone who naturally wants everything to be right before launching, it reminds me that progress matters more than perfection. One of my favourite quote is: “You can do anything, but not everything.” It’s a great reminder of the value of delegation.

Do you have any recommendations for the PA community considering setting up as a VA?

Treat it like a business from day one. Be

clear on your services, pricing and ideal client, but stay adaptable. Build relationships, focus on delivering excellent work and don’t be afraid to ask for help. The VA community is incredibly supportive.

Who inspires you?

Entrepreneurs who build successful businesses while staying true to their values. I’m particularly inspired by people who create opportunities for others and genuinely care about their clients and teams!

As a PA Life Club member, what are the best benefits for you?

The community and connections. Running a business can feel lonely at times, so having access to like-minded professionals, industry insights and learning opportunities is invaluable.

Parkinson’s Law: Why less time can make you more productive

In the fast-paced, and often unpredictable role of an Executive Assistant or Personal Assistant multiple priorities are competing for your attention. It’s easy for certain tasks to slip quietly to the bottom of your to-do list says Lindsay Taylor, Co-Founder & Director at Your Excellency…

As Executive Assistants and Personal Assistants, we’re experts at juggling priorities. From managing diaries and organising meetings to coordinating projects and handling unexpected requests, our days can quickly become full.

One productivity principle that can help us work more efficiently is Parkinson’s Law, first introduced by British historian Cyril Northcote Parkinson in 1955. Parkinson’s Law states:

”Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.”

In simple terms, if you give yourself a week to complete a task, it will often take a week. Give yourself a day, and you’ll likely find a way to complete it in a day. The task itself hasn’t changed, but your approach to it has.

For EAs and PAs, understanding this principle can be a game-changer. Rather than allowing work to stretch across the available time, we can use Parkinson’s Law to create focus, improve productivity and free up valuable capacity.

One practical way to do this is by setting personal deadlines that are earlier than the official deadline. If your Executive needs a presentation by Friday, aim to have it completed by Thursday. This encourages prioritisation and creates a useful buffer for any lastminute changes.

Another effective technique is timeboxing. Instead of spending an undefined amount of time on routine tasks, allocate a specific timeframe. For example, give yourself 30 minutes to clear emails, 20 minutes to arrange travel, or 45 minutes to prepare meeting papers. Knowing there is a time limit encourages faster decision-making and reduces the temptation to overthink.

Parkinson’s Law can also help tackle perfectionism. Administrative professionals are rightly known for their attention to detail, but there is a point where additional effort adds little value. Spending ten minutes reviewing a document is sensible; spending an extra hour making minor cosmetic changes may not be the best use of your time. The principle works particularly well

“
How much time does this really need?”

when planning recurring activities too. Whether you’re preparing board packs, organising events or compiling monthly reports, setting clear time boundaries can prevent tasks from becoming larger than they need to be.

Of course, Parkinson’s Law isn’t about rushing. Some projects genuinely require careful thought, collaboration and detailed planning. The goal is not to work faster at all costs, but to become more intentional about how we use our time. For EAs and PAs, productivity isn’t measured by how busy we appear. It’s measured by the value we create, the problems we solve and the support we provide.

The next time a task lands in your inbox, ask yourself: “How much time does this really need?”

You may discover that by giving yourself less time, you achieve more.

The September Reset: How to rebuild healthy routines without burning yourself out

PA Life’s Wellness Columnist Julia Green, Sales & Commercial Manager at Center Parcs Conferences & Events encourages you to be mindful of demanding workloads, and shares advice for managing the inevitable pressure points…

For many people, January signals a fresh start. But for Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and other business support professionals in a whole, September often feels like the real start of the year.

Summer holidays are over, leadership teams return refreshed and full of ideas, conference season gets underway, budgets begin to dominate conversations and diaries fill at lightning speed. Before you know it, you’re coordinating back-to-back meetings, planning events, juggling shifting priorities and already looking ahead to year-end.

Autumn is an exciting season - but it can also be exhausting

The temptation is to hit the ground running, saying yes to every request and trying to regain control by filling every gap in your diary. But a successful September reset isn’t about doing more. It’s about creating habits that help you perform at your best throughout the busiest months ahead.

Rather than asking yourself, “How can I be more productive?” try asking, “What helps me work well?”

For some, that might be protecting ten minutes between meetings to reset

before moving onto the next task. For others, it could be blocking out focused time to tackle complex projects before the inevitable stream of last-minute requests arrives. As the guardian of someone else’s diary, it’s easy to forget that your own time deserves protecting too.

“September is a good time to review your boundaries.”

EAs and PAs are often the calm in the middle of the storm. You absorb pressure from multiple stakeholders, solve problems before anyone else notices them and keep everything moving behind the scenes. But constantly supporting everyone else can leave little capacity to look after yourself.

Prioritise wellbeing in every working day

The reality is that wellbeing isn’t something you fit in once the inbox is empty or the event has been delivered. Those moments rarely come. Instead, it needs to be woven into every day.

Simple habits can make a significant difference: taking a proper lunch break away from your desk, walking outside between meetings, setting realistic expectations on response times or simply pausing for a few minutes before switching from one high-pressure task to another. These aren’t indulgences—

they’re the habits that help maintain focus, resilience and good decisionmaking.

September is a good time to review your boundaries. As requests increase and priorities compete, remember that saying yes to everything often means saying no to your own wellbeing. Supporting your executive effectively doesn’t mean being available every minute of every day; it means bringing your best energy, judgement and professionalism when it matters most.

As the pace builds towards the final quarter of the year, resist the pressure to pursue perfection. A sustainable routine will always outperform an ambitious one that lasts a fortnight.

This September, give yourself permission to reset with intention rather than intensity. Because when you look after your own wellbeing, you’re better equipped to support everyone else’s success too - and that’s something worth prioritising.

Retaining talent in a turbulent market

The rollercoaster of the past year has tested pay and rewards across the support sector. Faced with financial instability, political turmoil, and landmark employment reforms, many businesses struggled to o er significant salary rises. SecsintheCity’s latest Salary Survey reveals the earnings and what matters most to the assistant community today…

While 54% of our audience received a pay boost and 48% took home a bonus on top, overall wage growth was sluggish. Average salaries climbed just 2% year on year, inching from £48,400 to £49,200. For most industries, the last 12 months have been about security, survival, and slow but sustained progress.

Roles and industry sectors pay

A distinct two-tier market has emerged across di erent roles and sectors.

Earnings for EAs grew by just 2% and salaries remained unchanged for 80% of Marketing Assistants, 56% of Administrators, and 55% of Events sta . Meanwhile, pay fell for 8% of Administrators and Receptionists.

Sector-wise, average income declined across Fashion to £48,300, Recruitment to £50,800, and Hospitality to £32,800. On the other hand, Private PAs enjoyed

a standout year with an 11% annual increase and the highest proportion of remote workers at 20%. By contrast, Secretaries saw earnings fall and their

proportion of bonus payments drop by 27 percentage points, while other EAs supported multiple executives for smaller salaries.

Stark imbalances also persist across ethnic groups, signalling a pressing need for genuine pay equity. White professionals lead the salary rankings in 7 out of 15 job categories, while Black,

African, Caribbean, and Black British professionals receive the lowest average income across the sector at £38,100, dropping from £44,200 in our previous report.

With two-thirds of support professionals planning a career move in 2026, competitive pay is no longer enough, nor is it always feasible in a high-cost climate. While resistance to o ce mandates has softened slightly, dipping from 71% to 63%, hybrid and work-from-anywhere options remain the most powerful attraction and retention priorities. In return for their continued contribution, today’s multi-generational workforce seeks flexibility and fair rewards, meaning that o ering a diverse blend of benefits is the best way to support a varied sta .

Encouragingly, Asian and Asian British workers now receive the highest average earnings at £46,000 and secured this year’s top overall salary, with Legal PAs averaging £67,500.

The AI e ect

The rapid rise of AI has created new considerations, particularly for EAs. While most respondents take a cautious view, including 46% of Legal PAs/Secretaries, 44% of Receptionists, and 41% of HR sta , EAs report the highest levels of anxiety. Employers can mitigate these concerns by providing clear AI roadmaps and upskilling, allowing support professionals to automate routine tasks and focus on the high-level strategy and relationship management that leaders value most.

What does the sector value most Key motivators across the industry include hybrid work, private healthcare, and enhanced pension contributions. The last year has taught us the value of resilience and of a reliable, resourceful team. As global uncertainty continues, strong support sta are the bedrock of any organisation and an asset worth protecting. By aligning rewards, flexibility, and long term pay progression, it’s possible to build the stability and engagement needed to navigate an unpredictable market.

300+ applications. One role. What makes you different?

Three hundred applications for one Executive Assistant role. A few years ago, that would have seemed extraordinary, but today it’s becoming increasingly common. Sarah Howson and Marianne Whitlock, Directors at Strategic PA Recruitment, discuss what makes your application stand out…

As former Executive Assistants turned specialist business support recruiters, we personally review every application we receive, there’s no AI involved. We see some incredibly talented people, but also notice the same mistakes time and time again.

Many CVs tell us what someone has done, but very few tell us why they’re the person we should remember. Managing complex diaries. Booking international travel. Coordinating board meetings. Supporting C-suite executives. Preparing presentations. These are all core parts of the Executive Assistant role. Hiring managers expect to see them, so simply listing them won’t set you apart.

Why you?

What makes your experience different from the other 299 applicants? This is the real question every employer asks. Perhaps you’ve supported a founder through a period of rapid growth. Helped establish a brand-new office. Steered an executive team through an acquisition or business transformation. Introduced new systems or AI tools that improved efficiency and saved money. Built processes that saved hours every week or became the trusted right hand to a CEO during a particularly challenging period.

Those are the stories that make people

stop and take notice. To help you stand out. Your CV shouldn’t just explain your responsibilities. It should demonstrate your judgement, your contribution and, most importantly, the impact you’ve had.

An EA role is incredibly personal. Leaders aren’t just recruiting technical skills. They’re looking for someone they trust, someone who can anticipate what’s needed before it’s asked and someone who will become a genuine partner in helping them succeed.

Key take-aways from Sarah Howson “Having spent more than 20 years as an EA, I know this role is about so much more than administration. We influence decisions, create calm when everything around us is moving at pace, protect our executive’s time and build trusted relationships across a business. That’s the value your CV should communicate, not simply a list of tasks.

My advice would be:

• Be selective about the roles you apply for. Quality applications will always outperform quantity.

• Prepare properly for interviews. Understand the business, the leadership team, and the challenges they’re facing.

• Show commercial awareness. Demonstrate that you understand

how your role contributes to the wider success of the organisation.”

Marianne Whitlock adds her expert insights

“One of the biggest things we notice as recruiters is how often phenomenal Executive Assistants undersell themselves. You need to explain what changed because you were there. Did you save time? Improve processes? Strengthen communication? Support a business through change? Those are the details that make a hiring manager remember you.

My top tips are:

• Quantify your achievements wherever you can. Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

• Keep your CV concise and focused on what’s most relevant. White space is your friend.

• Make sure your LinkedIn profile reflects the same professional story as your CV. Recruiters will almost always look at both.”

At the end of the day, your CV isn’t a job description. It’s a marketing document. It is YOUR board paper. Every sentence should answer one question: Why should someone choose you?

Bespoke dining, at your service

The London Fine Dining Company was born out of the vision to o er the experience of dining at a top restaurant at the privacy of your home. We have the pleasure of talking to the creative mind behind the company, Head Chef Ben Mariner…

You were incredibly young when you entered the world of professional kitchens. Was cooking a passion for you already then?

Cooking was always a passion for me from as young as I can remember, but it really kickstarted when I first stepped into a professional kitchen. There was such a buzz about it and the rush of the kitchen was super exciting, that combined with my passion for the creative side ended up being an electric mix.

What have been your most memorable guests and cooking experiences?

Definitely the royal wedding in 2011 when Kate Middleton, now Princess of Wales, and her family stayed with us at The Goring Hotel in the days leading up to the wedding. It was a pleasure to look after them and witness the frenzy on the day. Thousands of photographers and journalists were trying to get through the barriers, and I didn’t leave the hotel for over a week. That was the first of many royal dinners and events, including some for the late Queen Elizabeth, but lining up and waving o The Princess of Wales

as she left on her wedding day was a really lovely moment.

What makes The London Fine Dining Company unique in today’s competitive fine dining market?

The team. Between the senior team we have a vast range of experience, cooking and running exclusive events for three di erent royal families, four prime ministers, the House of Lords and countless celebrities, all the way up to canapés and sit-down dinners for over 1000 people at a time for major sporting events. This allows us to understand the needs of clients and execute high class events smoothly, no matter the scale, space or client requests.

We also run our Meal for Meal project. For every meal we serve to guests, we also provide a hot meal for someone in need. It is really important to me that the business gives back and has a mission beyond profit and great for the team to see the positive impact of what they are a part of.

What’s most important for you in the service you provide to your clients?

Exceeding expectations. Over-delivering is our top company value and I like to think we do this well, from our communication in planning events, all the way to the creativity and surprises in the dishes and canapés on the day. We also like to send out small treats to clients during the year and go above and beyond in whatever way we can.

What’s shaping the fine-dining experience today?

As a company we work with longstanding establishments and clients, so trust and consistency come first for us. That said, I do see a shift toward more casual dining. We are having a lot of fun at the moment working out ways to bring a more interactive and playful experiences to guests who wish for that without compromising on quality. We are also focusing on canapés; developing new techniques and visual e ects to elevate the experience for product launches and corporate events.

Anna Petrides

Executive Assistant to the CEO & Admin Team Manager at Indurent

PA Life chats with Anna Petrides, a dedicated and dynamic professional who balances her role as an Executive Assistant with organising company events. She believes reliability, a great sense of humour, and strong team spirit are at the heart of a successful assistant career - qualities that saw her win Project Lead at the PA Life Star Awards 2025. Anna will also be joining the keynote panel at the PA Life Summit in September…

Huge congratulations for winning the Project Lead Star 2025 award. Has this professional recognition been of benefit to you professionally?

It’s been really nice to be recognised for something that sits slightly outside of my day-to-day role, but is still a huge part of what I do. I love organising events and leading on projects, especially when it brings people together, whether that’s to network or push themselves out of their comfort zones. The award definitely gave me a bit of confidence and reassurance that what I’m doing is working which is always nice to hear!

You have progressed from a team assistant role to an EA in just five years? How did you do it?

I was really lucky to join a business that was growing quickly, which meant I got exposure to a lot early on. When I started, there were only 24 of us, so I ended up knowing pretty much everything about how the business operated – which has been invaluable now we’re over 250 people. I built strong relationships with senior members of the team early on and just said yes to as much as I could, which meant I was constantly learning and taking on more. That’s what ultimately helped me progress from a Team Assistant to an EA in such a short time. .

What do you enjoy most in being an EA?

I love the variety – no two days are the same, and I genuinely thrive on that. One minute I’m organising global CEO calls, the next I’m leading something like an office move – it keeps you on your toes. What really makes it though is the partnership. I’m fortunate to have a CEO who gives me a proper seat at the table and values my input. You’re not just keeping things ticking over, you’re actually adding value – and that’s when the role becomes so much more impactful.

And what are the most challenging parts of being an EA?

Control is very much an illusion in this role. You’re constantly navigating different personalities, priorities and hierarchies, which definitely requires full attention. On top of that, your day can change in a heartbeat, so you’re always reassessing what actually matters and pivoting quickly to keep things running smoothly. It’s a bit of organised chaos, but if you enjoy spinning plates and staying one step ahead, that’s part of the fun!

What three qualities make you an outstanding EA?

Interpersonal skills: I build strong relationships quickly and know how to read the room.

Proactivity: I stay one step ahead and handle things before they become problems.

Discretion: I know what needs to be shared, and what absolutely doesn’t.

What advice would you give to aspiring assistants aiming to climb the career ladder?

Don’t wait to be asked, put your hand up and get stuck into everything. That’s how you show your value (and make yourself slightly indispensable). The role isn’t fixed, it’s what you make of it, so don’t let yourself get pigeon holed into one lane. Say yes, stay curious, and back yourself, the opportunities tend to follow when people realise you just get things done.

Do you anticipate the assistant role to undergo big changes due to use of AI?

I don’t think AI is here to replace assistants, it’s here to make us faster and better at what we already do. It takes away the low value, time consuming tasks, which frees us up to focus on the parts of the role that actually add value…and where we make the biggest impact.

Are you concerned about any aspects of AI in your role and in

Triathlon Swim
“You can’t automate personality, trust or instinct, and that’s exactly what makes a great assistant. ”

business in general?

We’ve embraced AI early as a business, so I’ve never really been worried about it, if anything, it’s quite exciting! It takes away the low value tasks no one really wants to be doing anyway, but the key is not letting it take over the parts that make us good at our jobs. You can’t automate personality, trust or instinct, and that’s exactly what makes a great assistant.

Which tools, or tech do you rely on most in your role, and how do they help you stay efficient and organised?

We use Copilot a lot, and it’s brilliant for pulling together information quickly and turning it into something actually usable, especially when you’re juggling multiple things at once. I also love Microsoft Loop. My team’s workspace has become our central hub, and the fact you can link things like agendas straight into meeting invites and update them live is a game changer. That said, I’m still a sucker for pen and paper. When everything feels a bit chaotic, writing things down gets it out of my head and onto a page without the risk of it being forgotten…and there’s something very satisfying about ticking it off manually.

How would your ideal day at work look like?

A cup of tea at the breakfast bar catching up with the team before the day starts is always a good sign. A clear inbox would be ideal, although that might be slightly optimistic. And then having the time to actually plan ahead properly, rather than constantly reacting, so you feel one step ahead instead of chasing your tail all day.

Which restaurants and hotels do you favour for your execs and clients, in London or anywhere else?

I’ve got a few go to spots I come back to again and again. Lantana is a firm favourite for breakfast at the moment, and for lunch I tend to gravitate towards places like Norma, Mortimer Street Kitchen and Lima.

For hotels, The Reach in Manchester is a great option, and The Kings Head in Cirencester is a favourite, especially for events. The Grove is always a safe bet, and Wildhive Eshott Hall was perfect for an offsite last year. Having a handful of tried and trusted options you know won’t let you down is key, it takes the stress out of booking and you know you’re putting people somewhere good.

If you weren’t an EA today, what would you be?

A marine biologist, 100%. I’m a complete water baby and would be in the ocean full time if I could. Unfortunately, the not-so-good-at-science part might have been my downfall.

What are the positives of being a PA Life Club member for you?

The newsletters are genuinely great, loads of useful tips and articles that actually feel relevant to what we deal with day to

day. The in person events are a big highlight too, it’s always nice to meet people who understand the role, share a few war stories and build new connections along the way.

How important is networking for you? Any tips?

It’s really important, I think it’s one of the most valuable things you can do in this role. Get stuck in and get yourself to as many events as possible, even if it feels a bit out of your comfort zone at first. It can be quite a lonely role sometimes, especially if you’re the only assistant, so having a network of people who just get it makes a huge difference. And let’s be honest, it’s always good to have people you can sanity check things with.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

My dad always used to say, “you’ve got to get through the no’s to find the yes’s,” which has definitely stuck with me. It’s basically just a reminder not to take things too personally, keep going, and don’t stop at the first no, there’s usually a better answer not too far behind.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Recently I’ve got really into the gym and strength training, which is something I never thought I’d say. I’ve even become an early morning person, and those sessions are my bit of calm before the chaos starts. I’m also a keen swimmer, so I’m in the pool whenever I can… I clearly just prefer being in water.

What’s next for you?

I’m really excited to see where we go as a business over the next few years, especially with how fast things like AI are moving. The journey so far has been incredible, and I’m looking forward to growing with the business and being part of whatever comes next. Personally, I’m not great at sitting still, so I’m always looking for the next challenge, whether that’s developing my team, taking on more responsibility or pushing myself slightly out of my comfort zone. That mindset seems to follow me outside of work too. I’m off to Fiji in August to dive with sharks. If I can handle that, everything else should feel pretty manageable!

For many organisations, the Christmas party is far more than an end-ofyear celebration. It’s an opportunity to recognise achievements, thank colleagues and clients, strengthen relationships, and finish the year on a high. Whether you’re planning an intimate team dinner, a spectacular company-wide celebration or an elegant client event, choosing the right venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.

If there’s one piece of advice event professionals consistently share, it’s this: start planning early.

It also allows more time to work with suppliers, refine your guest experience and avoid the pressure that comes with

last-minute planning.

The good news is that today’s Christmas party landscape offers more choice than ever before. Of course, selecting the perfect setting is only part of the equation. The most successful festive events are those that balance creativity with purpose.

Corporate gifting, perfected

Exceptional gifts. Seamless service. Memorable moments that strengthen business relationships. Whether it’s welcoming a new client, recognising a loyal employee, celebrating a milestone or sending festive thanks, corporate gifting has become far more than a transactional gesture. Done well, it reinforces relationships, reflects your organisation’s values and creates lasting impressions. Done badly, it’s quickly forgotten, or worse…

For EAs, PAs and Office Managers, the challenge is balancing creativity with practicality. Finding gifts that feel personal without becoming overly complicated, managing multiple recipients, staying within budget, navigating international deliveries and meeting tight deadlines can turn even the simplest gifting project into a significant undertaking.

That’s where the right gifting partners make all the difference.

Today’s leading corporate gifting providers offer far more than beautifully presented products. They bring expertise, insight and concierge service that removes the pressure from busy administrative professionals. From sourcing bespoke, artisan-made gifts to creating branded collections, managing personalised messaging and coordinating complex logistics, as an extension of your team, they ensure every detail is handled with care.

Quality has never mattered more. In an era where sustainability, authenticity and thoughtful experiences are

increasingly valued, generic hampers and off-the-shelf options no longer deliver the impact they once did. Instead, organisations are looking for gifts with purpose—carefully curated collections, premium products and personalised touches that demonstrate genuine appreciation.

Equally important is the service behind the gift. The best suppliers understand the demands placed on EAs and PAs and recognise that their role extends beyond simply fulfilling an order. They anticipate challenges, solve problems before they arise and provide responsive, flexible support throughout the process. Whether it’s accommodating lastminute requests, sourcing something truly unique or managing hundreds of deliveries across multiple locations, exceptional concierge service saves valuable time while delivering complete peace of mind.

The result is an experience that delights not only the recipient but also the person responsible for organising it. When gifting is effortless behind the

scenes, EAs and PAs are free to focus on the many other priorities that define their day, confident that every package will arrive on time and every interaction will reflect the professionalism of their organisation.

Pick of the best corporate gifting specialists

In the following pages we showcase a select collection of corporate gifting specialists who combine outstanding quality with exceptional service.

From bespoke luxury gifts and sustainable collections to end-to-end concierge support, these trusted partners help transform corporate gifting into a strategic tool for building stronger relationships, celebrating success and creating memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Because the most successful corporate gifts don’t simply arrive—they resonate. And with the right expertise behind every detail, they become moments that people genuinely remember.

Curated gifts for exceptional businesses

There is something particularly special about receiving a hamper, especially when it arrives in a signature Harrods wicker basket…

From thanking a valued client and recognising a colleague to celebrating an important partnership, Harrods Corporate Service helps businesses mark meaningful moments with a thoughtfully chosen gift.

In an increasingly digital world, the gifts that last the longest are often those that engage the senses: the anticipation of opening a beautifully presented basket, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, the richness of festive confectionery and the pleasure of sharing exceptional food and drink with family, friends or colleagues.

New for Christmas 2026, The Brompton Hamper offers a distinctive interpretation of the traditional festive hamper. Presented in an elegant circular wicker basket, its sculptural shape makes an immediate impression before revealing a carefully selected collection of Harrods treats within. Highlights include Christmas Spiced Coffee, Chocolate and Pistachio Panettone, Gold Leaf Honey

and Single-Origin Milk Hot Chocolate, accompanied by biscuits, preserves and confectionery. Priced at £250, it is a generous choice for clients, colleagues and business partners.

For those seeking a more abundant celebration, The Ultimate Christmas Hamper brings together an exceptional selection of fine wines, Champagnes and gourmet delicacies. Designed for sharing, it creates a striking centrepiece for festive gatherings and offers an impressive expression of appreciation for those who have made a meaningful contribution throughout the year.

For businesses wishing to make the gesture more personal, the team can help shape a gifting approach around the recipient, occasion and scale of the programme. From considered presentation to coordinated delivery across multiple destinations, each element is handled with the care expected of the Harrods name globally.

The Boxing Day Hamper, meanwhile, continues the celebration beyond Christmas Day. Filled with savoury favourites, cheeses, chutneys, craft beers and wines, it is well suited to relaxed entertaining and leisurely moments with family and friends.

Business travel that works smarter for Executive Assistants

Business travel has become far more than simply booking flights and hotels. For today’s Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and corporate travel bookers, every journey is an opportunity to help senior leaders arrive focused, productive and prepared, while ensuring plans remain flexible when priorities inevitably change...

Recent research from Blacklane found that 90% of executives believe travel helps unlock their best thinking, yet many struggle to achieve this without feeling calm, in control and supported throughout their journey. It highlights the growing importance of viewing business travel as a seamless end-toend experience rather than a series of individual bookings.

BUSINESS TRAVEL

Finding flow in the festive season

The importance of creating space for deep-focus during busy periods is reinforced in new research from Blacklane highlighting that 90% of leaders believe travel unlocks their best thinking, despite 86% saying it is difficult to achieve this ‘flow state’ on a work trip.

The global chauffeur service’s ‘Finding Flow - How Executives Excel on the Move’ report explores the travel habits of 2,000 executives in the UK and US. It found that when trips run well, 93% of respondents said they are more productive, with 44% saying significantly so.

To get the best out of business travel - which can be intense during the festive season and winter weather disruption harder to avoid - the research identifies the highly nuanced set of requirements that bring about deep focus; feeling calm (86%), feeling in control (84%), and travelling with a trusted provider (83%).

The Quiet Power Behind Every Business Trip

All year round can be busy. Autumn is no exception. Conferences, client meetings, end-of-year reviews. For the executives you support, the diary fills fast. And where the diary goes, travel follows.

As a PA or EA, you’re often the person quietly making it all work. The itinerary built around a schedule that changed three times. The transfer arranged for a city your principal has never visited. The contingency plan nobody asked for but everyone relies on.

Getting it right matters. And increasingly, the smartest move is going private.

support professionals to think about the entire trip holistically to help VIPs and C-suite travellers arrive focused, effective and ready for what is ahead. A chauffeur

by-the-hour booked to take care of multiple appointments and events across a day or entire trip ensures busy executives and VIPs can seamlessly move between

offices, events, parties, celebrations and year-end corporate hospitality.

At Volanteus, we work with assistants who need travel to be seamless, not stressful. Private aircraft charter puts control back in your hands. Flexible departures, no crowded terminals, and a single point of contact from booking to landing.

Whether it’s a same-day return to a European city or a longer trip that blends business with a well-earned personal escape, we make it straightforward.

Because the best travel experiences aren’t just about where you’re going. They’re about how well it all comes together.

Why the North means business

From vibrant cities and world-class conference facilities to historic venues and countryside retreats, the North of England offers corporate event organisers an inspiring choice of destinations with outstanding venues, expert local support and fresh ideas that make meetings, conferences and incentives memorable, productive and exceptional value...

Meetings with a Northern edge

Fresh perspectives, exceptional venues and connected cities – discover why the North of England continues to grow as one of the UK’s most exciting destinations for meetings, conferences and corporate events…

For corporate event organisers, finding the right destination is about much more than choosing a venue. Accessibility, value, delegate experience and memorable surroundings all play an important role in creating successful meetings and events. Increasingly, the North of England is proving it has all the ingredients to deliver on every front.

From vibrant city centres and worldclass cultural attractions to countryside retreats and architecturally striking venues, the region offers an impressive breadth of choice for conferences, board meetings, away days, gala dinners and incentive events. Excellent transport links, growing investment and a reputation for warm hospitality make it an increasingly attractive option for organisations looking to take their events beyond the capital.

For Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants, Office Managers and corporate event planners, the North presents an opportunity to deliver memorable experiences while often benefiting from greater flexibility, competitive pricing and distinctive venues that leave a lasting impression on delegates.

Greater Manchester remains one of the UK’s leading business tourism destinations, combining international connectivity with a thriving events infrastructure. As the destination management organisation for the city region, Marketing Manchester works to showcase everything the area has to offer, helping organisers discover venues, accommodation and experiences that can transform meetings into memorable events. Whether planning a large-scale conference, client event or incentive programme, the region continues to demonstrate why it is one of Britain’s most dynamic business destinations.

The North is also home to venues that combine character with purpose. Monastery Manchester is one such example, offering event organisers an unforgettable setting within one of the country’s finest restored historic buildings. Its striking Gothic architecture, fascinating heritage and beautifully restored interiors create a truly unique backdrop for conferences, awards ceremonies, dinners and private events. Beyond its impressive aesthetics, the venue also delivers genuine social impact, with every event helping to

support charitable initiatives within the local community—an increasingly important consideration for organisations seeking to align events with their wider ESG goals.

For those looking to escape the city, Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort in Burnley showcases another side of the North’s appeal. Set beside a tranquil lake and surrounded by Lancashire countryside, it offers an ideal environment for conferences, leadership retreats, residential meetings and team-building events. Combining contemporary meeting facilities with luxury accommodation, award-winning spa facilities and exceptional dining, it’s a destination that encourages delegates to switch off, reconnect and return refreshed.

Whether you’re organising an intimate board meeting, a multi-day conference or an incentive designed to inspire, the North of England offers an exciting mix of innovation, heritage and hospitality. In the following pages, we explore just a small selection of the destinations and venues helping to put the region firmly on every corporate event organiser’s shortlist.

MEET IN THE NORTH

Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort surrounded by a private parkland

For PAs and Executive Assistants tasked with organising meetings, conferences and corporate retreats, finding a venue that combines professionalism with memorable experiences is increasingly important. The most successful events are those that balance productive business time with opportunities for delegates to relax, connect and recharge.

Set within 40 acres of stunning private parkland, Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort offers an exceptional environment for everything from board meetings and leadership retreats to multi-day conferences and incentive events. Flexible event spaces, luxurious

accommodation and attentive service provide the foundations for seamless event delivery, giving organisers confidence that every detail is taken care of.

Beyond the meeting room, delegates can enjoy award-winning dining experiences across the resort’s acclaimed restaurants, making business dinners and networking opportunities truly memorable. The picturesque surroundings also create an inspiring backdrop for teambuilding activities, informal discussions and outdoor events.

For those looking to incorporate wellness into their itinerary, The Woodland Spa provides the perfect post-meeting retreat. Guests can unwind in luxurious surroundings, helping to relieve the pressures of a

busy working day and return refreshed and revitalised.

By combining first-class facilities, outstanding hospitality and a unique countryside setting, the resort offers PA and EA

professionals a destination that delivers both business excellence and unforgettable guest experiences.

A setting like no other – The Monastery in Manchester

Few venues in Manchester combine striking architecture, rich heritage and genuine social impact quite like Gorton Monastery. Designed by E.W. Pugin and completed in 1872, the Grade II* listed building was rescued from dereliction by a dedicated group of local volunteers

who purchased the ruinous shell for just £1. This year, the Trust behind its restoration is celebrating 30 years of preserving one of the city’s most remarkable landmarks and giving it a new purpose in the heart of Manchester.

Today, The Monastery is a distinctive venue for conferences, awards dinners, corporate events, weddings and concerts, offering historic

character alongside modern facilities. Recently named Manchester’s Leading Live Event Venue of the Year, it is also home to wellbeing, arts and community programmes, including its Listening Service and a longstanding partnership with Manchester Camerata.

As a registered charity, The Monastery offers something few venues can. Every event

held here helps care for this remarkable building while supporting the people and projects that give it purpose, ensuring it continues to thrive for generations to come.

For event organisers seeking something memorable, The Monastery offers more than an exceptional venue – every event becomes part of its continuing story of heritage, community and regeneration.

Manchester: A destination designed for events

As one of the UK’s leading conference destinations, Manchester provides a vibrant backdrop for events of all shapes and sizes.

The city’s diverse venue offer caters for everything from large-scale conferences and exhibitions to team away days and executive meetings. With an abundance of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, including the newly opened Mollie’s Manchester at the former Granada Studios and Aloft by Marriott in Manchester City Centre, event planners are spoilt for choice.

Famous for its culture, sport and entertainment, Manchester’s visitor experience is constantly evolving. From awardwinning restaurants and vibrant nightlife to museums,

galleries and green spaces, there is always something new for delegates to discover. Whether they are extending their stay or making the most of their downtime, Manchester provides unforgettable experiences at every turn.

Manchester also benefits from brilliant connectivity both nationally and internationally, making it a convenient choice for

delegates from the UK and further afield. The compact, walkable city centre adds to this ease, while the Bee Network, an integrated public transport system makes getting around the region simple, sustainable and affordable.

Organising a showstopping event in Manchester couldn’t be easier.

Marketing Manchester’s Convention Bureau team

The network you build becomes your greatest asset

In this column we share real life stories sent to us by executive support professionals. We hope you will find these relevant to your role, and genuinely insightful. Please email our editorial desk if you’d like to share experiences from your assistant career...

It started with what sounded like a simple request.

A senior executive needed to entertain an important client visiting London. The brief seemed straightforward enough: a private dining room, exceptional food, discreet service and availability at very short notice.

The reality was rather different.

The restaurant was fully booked. The private room had already been reserved weeks in advance and several other venues had no availability at all. The executive simply asked, “Can we make something happen?”

As Executive Assistants, we’ve all heard that question.

What often goes unseen is that the answer rarely comes from Google. Instead, it comes from relationships.

Over the years I have organised countless dinners, events, accommodation and experiences for senior executives and high-profile guests. Along the way I discovered something that no training course can really teach. The most valuable resource an EA has isn’t a piece of software or a process manual. It’s the network they build over time.

One phone call led to another. A restaurant manager I had worked with previously remembered me. They spoke with their events team, rearranged another reservation and within an hour we had secured exactly the experience the executive had hoped for.

To the executive, it appeared effortless.

Behind the scenes, it was the result of years spent building trust with people who knew that if I called, it mattered, and equally knew I valued the relationship beyond simply asking for favours.

That experience reinforced something I have carried throughout my career - every conversation matters.

Whether it’s a receptionist who always greets you warmly, a hotel concierge, another EA, an events manager or a supplier you’ve worked alongside for years, each relationship becomes part of a professional network that quietly supports your ability to deliver exceptional results.

The strongest EA networks aren’t built when something goes wrong. They’re built long before they’re needed. They grow through reliability, kindness, professionalism and keeping your word. They develop by thanking people after a successful project, recommending businesses that deliver excellent service and supporting fellow assistants when they need help themselves. In many ways, Executive Assistants become connectors.

Looking back, the dinner itself was a success. The client enjoyed the evening, the executive was delighted and the business relationship continued to grow.

But the real success had happened

long before that booking was ever made. It had been built through years of investing in people.

Technology continues to transform our profession, but one thing remains constant. Behind every smoothly delivered meeting, successful event or impossible last-minute request is often a relationship that someone has taken the time to build.

Sometimes the greatest asset an Executive Assistant possesses isn’t found in their diary. It’s found in their contacts list.
