SENSORY GARDEN MONTH: Practical approaches for safer and more engaging outdoor spaces
As dementia care providers place increasing emphasis on wellbeing, independence and quality of life, sensory gardens are becoming an increasingly valuable part of care home environments. Well-designed outdoor spaces can help support cognitive stimulation, reduce anxiety and encourage social interaction for residents living with dementia. Access to nature and sensory engagement can also contribute positively to mood, physical activity and overall wellbeing…
However, creating effective dementia-friendly sensory gardens requires more than simply adding plants and seating areas. Care providers must balance stimulation, accessibility and safety while ensuring outdoor environments remain welcoming and easy to navigate.
Designing
Safe and Accessible Outdoor Spaces
One of the biggest challenges in dementia-friendly garden design is reducing confusion and promoting safe movement throughout the space.
Clear, continuous pathways are particularly important. Circular walking routes can help residents move independently without encountering dead ends or confusing layouts that may increase frustration or anxiety.
Path surfaces should be smooth, non-slip and suitable for mobility aids, while avoiding patterns or strong visual contrasts that could be misinterpreted by residents with cognitive impairments.
Accessibility also extends to seating and resting areas. Benches should be positioned regularly throughout the garden to support residents with limited mobility, while shaded areas can help improve comfort during warmer weather.
Good visibility is equally important. Care teams should be able to supervise outdoor areas effectively without creating environments that feel overly clinical or restrictive.
Using Sensory Stimulation Carefully and Effectively
Sensory gardens are designed to engage multiple senses, including touch, smell, sight and sound. However, overstimulation can sometimes create distress rather than comfort for individuals living with dementia.
Many care providers are therefore moving towards calmer, more therapeutic design approaches that prioritise gentle sensory experiences.
Fragrant planting such as lavender, rosemary and jasmine can help create familiar and comforting scents, while textured plants and natural materials can encourage tactile interaction.
Colour also plays an important role. Bright but balanced planting schemes may help improve orientation and visual interest, although excessive visual clutter should generally be avoided.
Water features, bird-friendly planting and wildlife areas can also help create calming sound environments and encourage engagement with nature.
Encouraging
Independence and Meaningful Activity
Another growing trend is the use of sensory gardens to support purposeful activity and resident participation.
Raised planting beds, gardening stations and accessible planting areas allow residents to engage with horticultural activities safely, helping support dexterity, routine and social interaction.
For many residents, gardening activities can also trigger positive memories and provide a sense of familiarity and achievement. Care providers are increasingly using outdoor spaces for:
• horticultural therapy sessions;
• social activities and events;
• family visits;
• quiet reflection areas; and
• intergenerational activities involving schools or community groups.
Maintenance and Long-Term Planning Considerations
While sensory gardens can deliver significant wellbeing benefits, ongoing maintenance remains a key operational consideration.
Poorly maintained pathways, overgrown planting or damaged furniture can quickly create safety risks and negatively affect usability. Seasonal planning is therefore important to ensure outdoor spaces remain attractive and functional throughout the year.
As a result, many care providers are prioritising suppliers and landscape partners with specialist experience in dementia-friendly environments and long-term maintenance support.
Sensory Gardens as Part of Modern Dementia Care
As expectations around resident wellbeing continue to evolve, outdoor environments are increasingly recognised as valuable therapeutic spaces that can support dignity, independence and quality of life for people living with dementia.
For care providers, thoughtful sensory garden design is becoming an important part of creating safer, more engaging and more personcentred care environments.

Lauri Smith Founder & CEO
The Civility Gap
“Breaking silos between health, social care, community services”
• Explore what workplace incivility looks like in care (often subtle, normalised behaviours rather than overt conflict)
• Link incivility to staff wellbeing, morale, sickness absence and turnover
• Address the growing generational divide in the workforce, particularly the impact of experienced staff retiring and younger staff entering care with different expectations, communication styles and values
• Examine how poor culture accelerates this divide, and how inclusive, respectful cultures help retain both groups
Lauri Smith is the founder of Civility Home Care SA and a respected advocate for dignity, compassion, and ethical practice in community care. With extensive experience across health, social care, and service design, Lauri works at the intersection of leadership, policy, and frontline delivery. Their work focuses on closing the “civility gap” by embedding respect, accountability, and human-centred values into care systems and organisational culture. Lauri regularly collaborates with providers, regulators, and care professionals to drive sustainable improvement, promote workforce wellbeing, and ensure high-quality outcomes for the people and communities care services exist to serve.
TRAINING & INNOVATION: Digital training platforms –What works and what doesn’t in care
Digital training has become a core component of workforce development in the care sector. From e-learning modules and mobile apps to simulation tools, providers now have more options than ever to deliver training at scale. However, the reality is mixed: while some organisations are seeing clear improvements in engagement, compliance and care quality, others are struggling with low adoption and limited impact…
What’s working
The most effective digital training approaches share a number of common characteristics:
1. Blended learning models
Digital platforms work best when combined with in-person training and on-the-job coaching. This reinforces learning and ensures staff can apply knowledge in real care settings.
2. Mobile-first accessibility
With many care staff working shifts and limited desk access, mobile-friendly platforms are essential. Short, bite-sized content that can be accessed on demand is proving far more effective than long-form modules.
3. Scenario-based learning
Simulation tools and real-life scenarios, particularly in areas like dementia care, safeguarding and emergency response, help staff build confidence and decisionmaking skills, not just theoretical knowledge.
4. Clear links to outcomes
Leading providers are aligning
training with CQC expectations and care outcomes, using data to track improvements in areas such as incident reduction or audit performance.
What’s not working
Despite the potential, common pitfalls remain:
• Over-reliance on generic, off-the-shelf content with limited relevance to care environments
• Low engagement due to poor usability or overly complex platforms
• Treating digital training as a tick-box exercise rather than a development tool
• Lack of follow-up, meaning knowledge is not embedded in practice
Without the right approach, digital platforms can quickly become underused and ineffective.
Practical implementation steps
To maximise the value of digital training platforms, care providers should focus on:
1. Define clear objectives
Identify what the training is intended to achieve, whether compliance, skills development or improved care outcomes.
2. Choose user-friendly platforms
Prioritise solutions that are intuitive, mobile-accessible and suitable for a diverse workforce.
3. Tailor content to care settings
Ensure training reflects real-world
scenarios staff encounter daily, rather than generic material.
4. Adopt a blended approach
Combine digital learning with face-to-face sessions, mentoring and practical application.
5. Engage staff early
Involve frontline teams in selecting and shaping training to improve buy-in and relevance.
6. Provide time and support
Ensure staff have dedicated time to complete training and access to support if needed.
7. Track and measure impact
Use reporting tools to monitor completion, engagement and links to care quality metrics.
8. Continuously review and improve
Regularly update content and adapt delivery based on feedback and changing regulatory requirements.
From compliance to capability
Digital training platforms offer significant potential for care providers, but only when implemented effectively.
By focusing on usability, relevance and real-world application, organisations can move beyond compliance-driven training to build capable, confident teams, ultimately improving outcomes for both staff and residents.

NURSE CALL SYSTEMS: Choosing solutions that enhance independence without intrusion
Technology is playing an increasingly important role in supporting safety and wellbeing in nursing homes. From wearable devices to room-based sensors, digital monitoring tools can help staff detect risks earlier, respond faster to incidents and support residents to live more independently. However, for care home leaders at the Care Forum the challenge is not simply adopting new technology: it is ensuring that systems enhance care without compromising dignity, privacy or trust…
Supporting independence through discreet monitoring
Many modern care technologies are designed to be less intrusive than traditional monitoring approaches. Wearable devices, for example, can track movement patterns, detect falls or monitor vital signs while allowing residents to move freely throughout the home.
Similarly, room sensors can detect unusual activity, such as prolonged inactivity or nighttime wandering, without requiring constant staff supervision. When used appropriately, these systems allow residents to maintain independence while ensuring staff are alerted when intervention may be required. The goal is to support autonomy rather than restrict it.
Choosing the right technology for the environment
Not all monitoring technologies are suitable for every care setting. Leaders should consider factors such as resident needs, layout of the building and staff workflows when evaluating solutions.
For example, wearable technology may be effective for residents who are mobile and comfortable using devices, while discreet environmental sensors may be more appropriate in dementia care settings where devices could be removed or misplaced.
Integration with existing systems (such as nurse call platforms or electronic care records) is also important to ensure alerts and data can be acted upon quickly by care teams.
Ethical and transparent deployment
Introducing monitoring technologies also raises important ethical considerations. Residents and families should clearly understand what information is being collected, how it is used and who has access to it.
Transparent communication is essential to build trust. Many care providers involve residents,
relatives and staff in discussions before introducing new systems, ensuring that technology supports the organisation’s values and care philosophy.
Consent and data protection requirements must also be carefully managed, particularly where personal health or behavioural data is involved.
Technology as a support, not a replacement
While monitoring systems can enhance safety and efficiency, they are not a substitute for human care. Instead, the most effective deployments use technology to free up staff time for more meaningful interaction with residents.
For nursing home leaders, the priority is finding the right balance, adopting tools that improve safety and operational insight while preserving the dignity, independence and personal relationships that remain at the heart of high-quality care.
