MISSION STATEMENT

FWADA is a unique arts organization in a unique American place. Few cities of Fort Worth’s size are privileged to command such a wealth of major art museums, and fewer still have such a vital community spirit. What truly sets Fort Worth apart, however, is the vigorous, longstanding, clearly defined cooperation between the museums, the university art galleries, the non-profit exhibition spaces, and the art dealers, all of which are full working members of FWADA.

To fulfill its stated mission to stimulate interest in the visual arts through educational programs, art scholarships, and art competitions, FWADA organizes, funds, and hosts exhibitions of noteworthy art.

FWADA sponsors the annual Fall Gallery Night and Spring Gallery Night for members and friends. FWADA also sponsors an annual show featuring submitted artworks from Member institutions, the summer Selections exhibition. Keep an eye out for our Gallery Guide! You can find our most recent issue in your FW Weekly newspaper, or pick one up at a Member gallery or museum.

All these attainments have created a stable environment that produces a steady stream of top-notch talent, including major local artists who exhibit their work nationally and internationally. Newcomers are frequently dazzled by the quality of work being created in every medium and style. Their passion reinvigorates Fort Worth patrons who have become habituated to the riches that surround them, reminding them anew that the most authentic cultural connection they can make is the one that affords direct communication with the artists who interpret and illuminate the life experience they share through common background and interests. Although the city is justly recognized for its cosmopolitan worldview, it is the local artists and their devoted collectors who are the lifeblood of the Fort Worth art market.

The members of the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association are pledged to the maintenance of a high standard of ethical conduct and professional integrity; these businesses furnish a model that gallery associations in other cities might do well to emulate. FWADA is to be commended for its important role as a contributor to the cultural and aesthetic richness of Fort Worth.

El TP: Memories of the Past; Curated by Chris Contreras

Artes de la Rosa is proud to present El TP: Memories of the Past, an exhibition rooted in collective memory, storytelling, and community preservation. At the heart of this project is a hand-drawn map of a small but vibrant Hispanic barrio known as “El TP,” once located in West Fort Worth.

Through extensive research, archival exploration, and community engagement, this exhibition traces the lives of the people who called El TP home. Names and addresses were uncovered through historical records, while oral histories were gathered through interviews with surviving residents, allowing personal experiences, traditions, and everyday life in the barrio to be documented and honored. A rich collection of photographs and artifacts further offers a glimpse into a community shaped by resilience, culture, and connection.

Today, El TP has few physical remnants. Its streets, homes, and gathering spaces have largely disappeared. Yet its legacy endures. The memories of El TP live on through the stories, images, and artifacts preserved in this exhibition—serving as a powerful reminder that even when a place is no longer visible on a map, it remains alive in the lived experiences and collective memory of its people.

FORT WORKS ART PRESENTS: TEN

Fort Works Art commemorates its 10-year anniversary with the most ambitious day in the gallery’s history. This celebration will transform the space into a dynamic, multi-level cultural destination.

What began a decade ago as a bold, risk-taking exhibition space has evolved into one of Fort Worth’s most influential creative incubators. Over the years, Fort Works Art has remained committed to elevating both emerging and established artists, shaping the city’s contemporary art landscape in meaningful and lasting ways.

In honor of this milestone, the gallery will present three simultaneous exhibitions, including a large-scale, immersive installation by Crystal Wagner. The result is a dynamic, multi-sensory celebration that reflects the spirit, growth, and creative energy that have defined Fort Works Art over the past decade.

GALLERY 440

GALLERY NIGHT HOURS: 11-9

Regular Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9-5

Gallery 440 welcomes back Gerald Bell for a solo exhibition of his newest body of work, Everything AND the Kitchen Sink. The collection reflects a life lived at the intersection of multiple identities — as a bipolar, medicated, neurodivergent person of color. Through vibrant paintings filled with distinctive characters, playful animals, and a pop-art–inspired, spray-painted aesthetic, Bell transforms his self-proclaimed “weirdness” into a universal visual language. Art is his most honest form of communication, offering abstract narratives that invite candid, unapologetic conversations about what it’s like to be Gerald. He paints it all — a little bit of everything for everyone…including the kitchen sink.

While you’re here, get lost in the Gallery’s funky permanent collection of eclectic fine art — modern to contemporary, local to global, and full of fresh finds begging to be discovered (and collected). Shop artful hand-forged jewelry by Camille Cole.

With the vibes turned all the way up, we’re welcoming back DJ Melo, our favorite auditory alchemist. Come for the art, stay for the beats, and join us for a night you don’t want to miss.

Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, on view now through September 28, is the artist’s largest exhibition to date and his first major museum survey in more than a decade. Johnson, one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, is internationally recognized for his multidisciplinary practice that spans painting, sculpture, film, and installation.

Tracing Johnson’s trajectory from his early experiments in photography and video to his recent materially complex paintings and assemblages, A Poem for Deep Thinkers, brings together nearly 90 works, engaging art history, philosophy, and Black popular culture as frameworks for exploring the human psyche. The exhibition reflects on themes of history, identity, masculinity, parenthood, and self-care, underscoring Johnson’s role as both an interpreter of art history and a shaper of contemporary culture.

In celebration of FWADA’s Spring Gallery Night, we invite you to experience Artist in Process, a unique opportunity to witness art in the making. Local artist Karla García will be working live in our front gallery, offering a rare glimpse into her sculptural practice rooted in clay.

Her live sculpting takes place alongside our current exhibition, “The Cinematic West: The Art That Made the Movies,” which explores how artists like Frederic Remington and Charles Russell helped shape the imagery of the Western film genre. In this setting, García’s tactile, three-dimensional forms create a vibrant dialogue with the historic paintings, silent film clips, and vintage movie posters on view, inviting visitors to connect the cinematic imagination of the Western frontier with the lived, contemporary landscapes that inspire her work.

Stop by anytime between 1:00–3:00 pm to watch Karla García at work and engage with her creative process.

STILL LIFE examines the conceptual overlap between still life and landscape painting—two historically distinct yet deeply connected genres. Traditionally, still life is rooted in interior arrangements, while landscape unfolds across expansive natural settings. In Billy Hassell’s work, these boundaries dissolve; his landscapes function as still lives—intimate, deliberate compositions shaped by memory, reflection, and observation.

The paintings develop through a layered, process-driven approach drawing from on-site pencil and watercolor sketches, personal recollection, and botanical studies and field guides. Rather than offering literal depictions, Hassell allows subtle traces of these sources to surface, emphasizing reconstruction and lived experience. Installed together, the works form a collective presence—a physical still life within the gallery—inviting viewers to consider how individual paintings interact to shape a larger visual environment.

Compositions range from close, portrait-like studies to expansive scenes suggesting entire ecosystems, capturing the beauty and complexity of the natural world and its layered emotional resonance.

William Campbell invites you to the opening reception on Saturday, March 28 during FWADA’s Spring Gallery Night. Located at 217 Foch Street, the gallery will be open from 11 am to 9 pm, with an opportunity to meet the artist during the evening reception.

In Loving Memory of Carol Ivey

We are heartbroken to share that our dear friend and longtime Fort Worth artist, Carol Ivey, passed away suddenly on February 8th.

Carol was a beloved and steadfast presence in the Fort Worth arts community. Her work, generosity, and unwavering support for the arts left a lasting mark on all of us. Alongside her husband, Herb Levy, she could always be found at gallery openings, museum exhibitions, and artist talkschampioning creativity and showing up with enthusiasm and care.

We grieve with her family and hold them in our thoughts during this difficult time. A memorial will be planned this spring, with details to follow.

In lieu of flowers, her family invites you to honor her by supporting the arts, giving to a meaningful cause, and extending kindness to others. She will be deeply missed.

Celebrating Emerging Artists

FWADA is proud to feature the work of undergraduate student artists in this spring’s Spring Gallery Night brochure. All submissions came from current college art students in the DFW area. We wanted to celebrate emerging talent and support those dedicated to advancing their artistic careers.

FWADA members had the special opportunity to help select the cover image. The final selection, chosen through a combination of member votes and FWADA Board input, was created by artist Sadie Rubio, a 19 year old freshman pursuing an Associate of Visual Arts at Tarrant County College. Her winning artwork, Inverted Friends, was inspired by the visuals of inverted coloring digitally.

These student submissions highlight the imagination, talent, and expressive power of the next generation of artists in the DFW area, and reflect our community’s commitment to uplifting young voices through art.

Thank you to all the participating students, and to their colleges and universities for supporting their creative journeys. Let’s continue to inspire future artists together.
