Nestled off I-20 in Fort Worth is an unassuming building that most would easily pass without a second thought, but inside its weathered facade and lived-in aesthetic, a group of people are working to build a community that embraces gender-expansive people.

Finn’s Place honors the legend of Finn Spicer, a transgender man with Down’s Syndrome who taught the people of his community that the expression of gender identity is something we all face. As a nonverbal person, Finn struggled to share his true identity with those around him. Once he was able to, the world changed for him, and the community around him embraced and supported his journey into self-actualization.

Founded in 2022, the nonprofit community center provides a safe haven for people on their journey to self-actualization through gender expression.

Administrative Director Zoe Wilkerson (any/all) said Finn’s Place is “a space for people to find their people,” whether that’s “a woman who feels great in a trucker hat” or “a cisgender man that wants to paint his nails.”

Wilkerson’s personal journey has paralleled their time with Finn’s. From the grand opening to spending days as a volunteer and now director, Wilkerson knew their gender assigned at birth was not aligned with their inner self. They thought “boy or girl was the only option.” Finn’s allowed them to meet other agendered people and “see an experience that mirrored” theirs.

The Trevor Project found that almost half of transgender and nonbinary young people have

seriously considered attempting suicide in the last year. To combat this challenge often faced by gender-expansive and other LBGTQIA+ people, mental health services play a major role in the work that’s done at Finn’s Place. In addition to connecting individuals with community resources that may be able to provide assistance, the center has now introduced peer-led support groups with meetings for individuals in specific journeys as well as an all-gender support group that helps reinforce the sense of community and belonging you feel when you walk through the doors.

Finn’s most recent service addition is a support group specifically for gender-expansive or -questioning people with intellectual disabilities. The overlap between neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ identity is a topic of recent studies in psychological research with a large number of the neurodiverse people also identifying as members of the queer community.

To cultivate community, monthly public events include activities like Fort Finn, an adult summer party featuring a massive pillow fort, plus clothing drives, potlucks, and more. In addition to mental health and social services, Finn’s also offers programming focused on educational aspects impacting financial literacy, such as navigating insurance or estate planning.

Alive and Kicking Trinity

Pride Fest not worried about World Cup fans from LGBTQIA+unfriendly Argentina later this month.

After relocating to South Main Village last year, Trinity Pride Fest experienced its largest turnout to date. More than 7,000 souls packed the Near Southside area around South Main Street for a day of partying and inclusivity. And of being out and loud. With the World Cup happening locally around the same time as this year’s fest — Sat, Jun 27 — concerns about visitors from the staunchly queer-unfriendly country of Argentina have

mostly been quashed, thanks to the participation of Fort Worth police, the City of Fort Worth, and Trinity Pride Fest itself.

“We’ve had productive conversations with the Fort Worth Police Department and other city partners regarding Pride Fest,” said Trinity Pride Fest President Roger Calderon, “and we’re confident in the planning and safety measures being put in place for the event.”

Once word that Argentines would be descending on Fort Worth spread, Trinity Pride certainly acknowledged the possibility for drama.

“The Trinity Pride board is definitely aware of the World Cup schedule and mindful of the possibility of increased activity in the area,” Calderon said. “We maintain a strong working relationship with the Fort Worth Police Department and the City of Fort Worth’s Office of Emergency Management and coordinate closely with them each year to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees.”

Argentina was once incredibly LGBTQIA+friendly, but that changed with the election of a new president in 2023. Javier Milei took office, and hate crimes against the Argentine queer community skyrocketed by 70%. LGBTQIA+ rights were also rolled back, and by restricting medically approved gender-affirming care for minors and dismantling antidiscrimination agencies, Milei made Argentine queers personae non grata in his country.

Calderon stresses that any extra precautions are not because of possibly rowdy Argentine counter-protestors but because of the sheer size and scope of the event, projected to be Trinity Pride’s largest ever.

“To be clear, our planning has been driven primarily by the continued growth of Trinity Pride Fest,” he said. “Our Pride Market has nearly doubled in size, we’ve expanded our entertainment

lineup and performance spaces, and we’re welcoming more community organizations, businesses, and sponsors than ever before.”

With growing attendance, Calderon said, “we’re working closely with Fort Worth Police, emergency management personnel, and our community partners to ensure a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience for everyone who attends. We’re excited to showcase the incredible energy of South Main Street and celebrate the LGBTQ+

community alongside thousands of attendees from across Fort Worth and North Texas on June 27.”

In an email, Fort Worth police said, “Any scheduled/permitted activities in the city of Fort Worth that we are a part of, we will provide active patrolling and have an on-site presence to assist in maintaining a safe gathering for all involved.”

For security reasons, Fort Worth police went on to say they cannot disclose specific details or their tactics for the event. l

Dressed for the Record

The Fort Worth nonprofit YesterQueer knows that with vintage photos of queerness, we viewers

may not get the intent, but we understand the meaning.

The feelings of Cowtown locals nearly a century ago are largely left to the imaginations of writers and historians. The conversations, the glances, the private understandings between folks who couldn’t afford to be known — all are long evaporated in the Texas heat.

What survives is almost accidental: a receipt, a letter, occasionally a photograph. And while not necessarily worth a thousand words, some images come with hefty emotional value.

That’s what happened when this image of three individuals caught my attention in a recent online auction. Shot at the studio of photographer Guy N. Reid on Houston Street sometime in the early 1920s, it’s a formal, full-length portrait — the kind that Fort Worth’s emerging middle class commissioned to mark memorable occasions.

Two of the figures wear white ties and tails, the other a dark sport coat and tie and round wire-rimmed glasses catching what light the studio

allowed. All three present, unambiguously, tog men’s formal wear.

All three appear to be women.

The portrait is a recent addition to the archive of YesterQueer, the Tarrant County LGBTQ+ History Project. It joins a small selection of surviving photos that place gender-nonconforming individuals specifically in Cowtown, including a pair of images from the Electric Post Card Studio on Main Street, one depicting two cowboys linked by lariat, and another two young women sporting wide-brimmed hats and matching long-laced boots.

We don’t know their names. We don’t know if they would have identified as queer, only that they chose to be photographed and they chose to preserve it.

Seth Knievel, a Ph.D. candidate at Louisiana State University whose dissertation focuses on queer archives and photographs, has spent years hunting images like these in thrift stores, estate sales, and antique shops across the South.

When shown the Reid portrait recently, he zeroed in on a detail easy to overlook. These weren’t candid snapshots taken by a sympathetic friend. This was a transaction conducted in the presence of a stranger who could have refused — or worse. That Reid didn’t, that the portrait exists at all, suggests a particular kind of courage on the part of its subjects.

Knievel is careful about the limits of what images like these can prove and the assumptions modern historians might make. The concept of a public homosexual identity barely existed before the Oscar Wilde trials of 1895, and by the McCarthy era, same-sex affection in photographs often came with grave consequences.

Knievel does extensive research on the subjects of his photos, using whatever hand-written captions or visual clues are provided, but for him, when it comes to the aesthetic enjoyment of images like these, the question of proof is ultimately beside the point.

“It doesn’t really matter whether or not the people in this photograph were queer,” he said. “What matters is that when we look at these photographs … we have the space to imagine. This photograph represents a transgression of social norms. And that in itself is really impactful.”

Images like these are why YesterQueer exists — to gather the fragments of a history that was never meant to survive and to make sure it does.

The three figures in the Reid portrait are still unnamed, but they walked into a studio a century ago and asked to be seen. Some acts of courage leave no footnote. They just leave a photograph.
