Our commitment towards sustainability rooted in the future

Redefining Sustainable Luxury

Nestled along the unspoiled southern coast of Sardinia, Forte Village is a sanctuary where luxury hospitality meets environmental and social responsibility.

Our journey toward sustainability began in 1972, long before it became a global priority and our mission is still clear: to redefine what sustainable luxury means in the 21st century. Every element of the resort—from our architecture and energy systems to our sourcing and social impact programs is designed with the future in mind.

Rather than focusing on a single project, we have embraced a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring a lasting positive impact on both the local community and the planet.

Our dedication to sustainability has earned us GSTC accreditation, a globally recognized certification with stringent environmental and social responsibility criteria Forte Village with Villa del Parco & SPA, Villas, and Waterfront Suites is also recognized among the Sustainability Leaders of The Leading Hotels of the World a prestigious distinction held by just selection of properties worldwide that meet the highest standards of cultural, social, and environmental stewardship.

50 Hectares of biodiversity

Spanning over 50 hectares of a lush park, the resort is home to an extensive array of plant species that live in harmony with our sustainable landscape design.

•Our gardeners work year-round with local authorities to protect and enhance the natural ecosystem.

•Our green areas are maintained through a biologically based system for pest and disease control, ensuring plant health without compromising the environment.

•The well-being of non-native animals is overseen by expert veterinarians, reflecting our dedication to ethical and respectful stewardship of all life on site.

•Inspiring the Next Generation: our Kids Club introduces younger guests to the wonders of the natural world through fun, hands-on educational programs focused on environmental responsibility and sustainable living.

In 2023, together with local DMC FA Travel, we carried out a hands-on reforestation project in the countryside of Ussana (South Sardinia), where employees from both teams planted carob, olive, and wild pear trees a shared commitment to restoring nature and giving back to the land.

Our Commitment

Whenever a tree reaches the end of its life, we plant two more to ensure continuous regeneration of our natural environment

Forte Village Nature Park: A Celebration of Nature and Wonder

A breathtaking new destination within the Resort, the Forte Village Nature Park is a living tribute to the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Here, guests step into a magical realm where nature and biodiversity flourish in perfect harmony.

The park is home to a variety of animals from the radiant plumage of mandarin ducks and ornamental hens, to the native fallow deer, sheep, goats, Giara horses, and our iconic Sardinian donkeys.

Water: Precious, Protected, Preserved

Rainwater Harvesting Since 1972

Forte Village has long been a pioneer in water conservation. Our vast dam, in operation since 1972, can collect and store 353,242 cubic meters of water - the equivalent of 141 Olympic-size swimming pools This precious resource is then reused throughout the resort, reducing our dependence on external water supplies.

Greywater Recycling

Each day, we biologically purify 800 m³ of greywater, which is then reused to nourish our gardens and green spaces. This process alone is enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool every three days, ensuring our gardens remain lush with minimal environmental impact.

A state of the art desalination plant

We’re expanding our water sustainability with a desalination system that will convert 600 m³ of seawater into fresh water daily, reducing pressure on local water resources.

Our 50-hectare gardens are maintained through advanced smart irrigation systems that optimize water use.

Clean energy from Sardinia’s endless sunshine

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Sardinia gives us the perfect conditions to turn light into clean energy.

•Solar panels on three hotels have generated hot water since 2016

•Since 2022, solar power systems have been installed at the Conference Center. The excess energy produced is also used to power the nearby Hotel Castello, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste

A third photovoltaic, will boost Resort renewable energy capacity to 1.4 MW. A major step toward energy independence and carbon reduction, powered by the Sardinian sun

“Pathway to offsetting carbon emissions” our project included in the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network.

Our commitment to sustainability goes far beyond energy production. At Forte Village, we have reimagined the way we move and operate, with environmentally conscious solutions built into everyday life:

•traditional cars are not allowed in the resort and have long been replaced with battery-powered golf carts and bicycles for both guests and staff

•LED lighting are installed throughout common areas to reduce energy consumption

•our parking areas are equipped with electric vehicle charging stations electric sockets available for guests and visitors

Giving back to the beautiful land that hosts us

Luxury hospitality can be a powerful force for sustainable economic growth and cultural preservation. Located in Sardinia, one of Italy’s most beautiful and unspoiled islands, we are proud to give back to the territory that gives us so much.

Investing in local talents

At Forte Village, sustainability also means investing in people and places, creating meaningful opportunities that support the local economy and foster long-term growth.

•While we welcome talent from all nationalities, 87% of our staff come from Sardinia, and over 94% from Southern Sardinia, where the resort is located. This helps boost regional employment and reduces the need for young professionals to leave the island in search of work.

•Through dedicated in-house training programs, we support our employees in building long-term careers in hospitality nurturing the next generation of skilled, passionate professionals.

Shaping the future of hospitality

In 2008, Forte Village founded the Hotel Business School by Forte Village, the first of its kind in Sardinia, to bridge the gap in hospitality training on the island. Developed in partnership with Luiss Business School in Rome, one of Italy’s top management schools, The Master in Five Star Hotel Management is ranked #1 in Italy and #5 globally (Eduniversal).

100% job placement rate

Full scholarships for Sardinian students ensure local talent can access world-class hospitality education, regardless of financial background.

Sustainability through local cooperation

We proudly foster long-term cooperation with Sardinian businesses to strengthen the local economy, celebrate the island’s rich cultural identity, and showcase the exceptional quality of local food, wine, and artisanal products that define the true essence of Sardinia.

From land to table

While sourcing from local producers can be challenging due to limited availability and higher costs, we remain committed to choosing local farms, fisheries, and artisans whenever possible.

This approach allows us to:

•Ensure exceptional freshness and quality

•Support Sardinia’s local economy

•Promote the authentic taste of our island to guests from around the world

Over the past year, we have purchased:

• Over 39,000 litres of fresh milk and 8,500 kg of cheese from Arborea, a centre of agricultural excellence.

• 38,000 kg of freshly baked bread and 12,500 kg of ripe tomatoes from Santa Margherita di Pula.

• 9,500 bunches of basil, 8,500 of rocket and 4,500 of parsley from local producers.

• More than 21,000 seadas, 15,000 culurgiones and 3,000 Sardinian panadine from San Sperate, the village of murals.

• 800 kg of artisan honey from San Sperate and prized saffron from Turri.

• 2,000 kg of pecorino cheese and over 600 kg of traditional sausage from Fonni, the mountainous heart of Barbagia.

In addition, over 30 Sardinian companies are involved in maintenance, construction, landscaping and waste management services.

Supporting Health and Charity Local Initiatives

Through fundraising, events, partnerships and donations , we are proud to support a variety of impactful charitable initiatives. Initiatives over the years include the Children with Diabetes Summer Camp, charity dinners for children in need, and sports events raising funds for medical research and local health organizations. From golf tournaments supporting humanitarian causes to donations for cancer research and cystic fibrosis.

Key Milestones Achieved

“Un Mammografo per il Businco”

We contributed to a successful fundraising campaign of €220,000 for the purchase of a new mammogram machine, in operation since November 2022 at the oncology department of Businco Hospital in Cagliari. This vital addition has significantly reduced waiting times and improved access to early diagnosis and care in the main oncological center of the Island

“Un Camper per la Prevenzione”

Together with Comitato Solidale Sardegna in Rosa, Palazzo Doglio, and other partners, we reached our goal of €353,000 to fund a mobile medical unit that will soon be donated to Abbracciamo un Sogno. The van will offer free screening services across Sardinia, reaching isolated communities and promoting early detection and health prevention.

“Health: joining forces for care and prevention”: our project included in the United Fashion and Lifestyle Network.

Preserving the beauty below and beyond

From safeguarding the extraordinary beauty of our sea to nurturing its delicate marine ecosystems, we are deeply committed to protecting both beach and marine life — today and for generations to come.

•In partnership with local fishermen, Forte Village joined the “Fishing for Litter” initiative, successfully removing 1,000 kg of marine waste from Sardinian waters between May 2022 and May 2023. This effort is part of a global program to recover and recycle marine debris caught in fishing nets, helping to preserve the clarity and purity of our coastline.

•Our team is also at the forefront of beach clean-up initiatives, playing an active role in keeping the shoreline pristine. These efforts not only maintain the visual beauty of our environment but also protect marine life from harmful waste.

Sustainable renovations

At Forte Village, the local environment shapes every decision we make in how we build and restore. Each renovation and new structure is thoughtfully designed to reflect the beauty, character, and integrity of our surroundings.

•Our hotels, public spaces, including the new Piazza Luisa, and facilities are constructed using natural Sardinian materials including wood, granite, travertine, and Orosei marble chosen for their timeless elegance, durability, and deep connection to the land.

•Architecture is carefully integrated into the landscape, ensuring minimal visual and environmental impact, and preserving the natural charm of our setting.

•The Forte Arena, our iconic open-air theatre, is a model of eco-conscious design built according to sustainable construction principles and fully in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Preserving sardinian culture and heritage

At Forte Village, we proudly celebrate Sardinia’s rich cultural identity through a variety of initiatives

Traditional ceramics and handwoven carpets are showcased across our hotels, suites, and villas.

Among the cultural events supported by Forte Village is the Sant’Efisio Festival, Sardinia’s most iconic religious and cultural celebration, held every year from May 1st to May 4th. During the festival, hundreds of people in traditional Sardinian costumes accompany the statue of Saint Efisio on a pilgrimage from Cagliari to Nora, honouring the saint who is believed to have saved the island from the plague in the 17th century.

Living sustainability: inspired by sardinia

Sardinia is one of the world’s few Blue Zones regions where people enjoy remarkably long and healthy lives. But this isn’t by chance; it’s a reflection of a lifestyle that is naturally sustainable.

•A diet built on local, seasonal, and organic food

•Strong sense of community and active daily life connected to nature

•A deep respect for the land, tradition, and balance

These timeless habits align perfectly with today’s values of low-impact living, well-being, and environmental stewardship. At Forte Village, we’re inspired by this culture bringing its essence into our guest experiences, from healthy cuisine to outdoor wellness and mindful practices. Sardinia doesn’t just show us how to live longer it shows us how to live better, in harmony with the planet.

Sardinia on the world stage

We are proud to play a key role in showcasing Sardinia to the world through the prestigious events we host each year, placing the island in the international spotlight.

•Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda at Forte Village

In 2024, Sardinia became the epicentre of global haute couture as Forte Village hosted Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria. Over 500 international guests including celebrities, top clients, and global media were immersed in an unforgettable journey through the island’s artistic soul. Even today, through dedicated webinars, we support employee training to foster a responsible approach to environmental ethics.

Sustainability as a shared commitment

More and more companies are choosing us because they recognise genuine value in our commitment to sustainability. Among the experiences we offer, team-building activities are a particular highlight: groups have the opportunity to experience the local area first-hand and in a responsible way, taking part, amongst other initiatives, in cleaning up nearby coastlines.

It’s a practical way for us to give something back to the environment, together.

Sustainability in harmony with luxury

Integrating sustainability into the world of luxury requires balance and sensitivity. At Forte Village, we translate our values into actions that benefit the environment, whilst always ensuring the guest experience remains intact. Our commitment raises guests’ awareness of:

• reusing towels and bed linen

• switching off lights, air conditioning and TVs when not needed

The genuine enthusiasm with which our guests embrace these initiatives fills us with pride, proving that luxury hospitality can go hand in hand with respect for the environment.
