Publisher Perspective BRING ON SPRING!

IIn my mind, winter officially ended the moment my family and I stepped off the plane in San Juan. This was my first trip to Puerto Rico, and from the second we arrived, it felt like pure sunshine therapy. Me, my mom, dad, my brother and his wife, all together, 80–85 degrees every single day, blue skies and exactly the kind of warmth we didn’t even realize we needed.

There is something so special about stepping away for a few days with the people who know you best. The sunshine was good for the soul. The laughter was even better. For that little window of time, winter felt very far away. And then… reality.

We landed back home to ice and bitter cold… the tail end of that first storm — and as you all now know, what followed was more snow than we’ve seen in this community for many, many years. While I was incredibly grateful for our time in San Juan, I’ll admit that returning to frigid temperatures made re-entry just a little more difficult.

But that’s the beauty of seasons, they always change. And now, we are turning the page.

Spring is officially here, my absolute favorite season. Fresh blooms, longer days, boats heading back onto the water and a renewed sense of energy everywhere you look. It’s the season of momentum, and we have so much happening this month.

DYNAMIS DASH 5K RUN & WALK THE POWER OF WELLNESS & CONNECTION

As spring settles into the foothills of North Carolina, runners, walkers and community supporters will gather on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Dynamis Estate Wines for the 2nd annual Dynamis Dash 5K Run and Walk.

This event invites participants to experience wellness, connection and purpose – set against the backdrop of a historic mountain estate. The race begins at 9:00 a.m.

More than a timed course, the Dynamis Dash 5K Run and Walk is designed to welcome seasoned runners, casual walkers and those simply looking for a memorable day outdoors. The event brings together fitness and hospitality in a setting unlike any other. Participants will follow a scenic 5K route that winds through century-old vineyards and rolling hills, offering sweeping views of the estate and surrounding landscape at every turn.

Proceeds from the event will support the Hugh Chatham Foundation, reinforcing the

Dash’s commitment to community impact. Each step along the course contributes to the Foundation’s ongoing efforts, making the experience meaningful far beyond the finish line.

Following the race, participants will be invited to celebrate their accomplishment with a thoughtful post-race experience. Runners and walkers will enjoy a gourmet lunch, and those 21 and over will also receive a glass of select wine, providing a relaxed and social atmosphere to unwind and connect.

Every registered participant will receive a custom athletic race shirt, serving as a lasting reminder of the day. For guests who prefer to take part in the celebration without running, a lunch-only ticket option is also available, ensuring the event remains inclusive for all supporters.

Early bird registration is currently open and will end on March 15th. With limited capacity and strong early interest, participants are encouraged to secure their spots early.

The Dynamis Dash 5K Run and Walk reflects the power of bringing people together through shared experiences. From the energy at the starting line to the conversations shared over lunch, the event is designed to foster community while supporting an important cause. It is not just about the distance covered – but the connections made and the impact created along the way, as well.

Visit dynamisdash5kfunrun.itsyourrace. com/register to register for the Dynamis Dash 5K Run and Walk. Early bird pricing is available for $50 through March 15th before increasing to $55 after that date. An “Under 21” package (with no wine included) is available for $40. What’s Growing @ the Lake WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GARDENING AND PLANTING AROUND LAKE NORMAN

Gardening in the Carolinas, particularly in the Lake Norman area, can sometimes be daunting for those accustomed to our compacted clay soil and the unpredictable weather. Additionally, the uncertainty of planting locations and times can be intimidating. However, I am here to assure you that growing plants and nurturing them can be accomplished.

Let’s begin with the fundamentals. Firstly, the Carolina clay soil presents a challenge for plant growth. To optimize its conditions, it is essential to incorporate generous amounts of organic matter such as compost and work them into the top six to 12 inches of the soil. This process enhances drainage and structure. Furthermore, lawn aeration during fall months can further improve soil quality. It is advisable to focus on the entire bedding area rather than just the specific planting hole. By conditioning the entire area, you can ensure healthier plants in the long run. If budget constraints prevent you from conditioning the entire yard, consider focusing on a smaller area by adding a high-quality, ready-to-use soil conditioner. Daddy Pete’s, a natural organic product produced in Stony Point, NC, is an excellent option.

Secondly, it is crucial to determine the planting zone for Lake Norman. As I like to say, we are in zone 7b. This means that when you encounter a plant with a grow tag indicating it thrives in zones five through eight, you can confidently plant it here. However, it is important to note that annuals will perish in the winter and require replanting annually. Perennials, on the other hand, are planted once and provide long term growth. Regardless of the plant category, proper care is essential for their survival. Plants require attention and nurturing, much like babies.

Lastly, take a walk around your yard in the afternoon during the summer to get a true sense of how much sun or shade your yard receives. I always advise people that they know their yard better than just telling me they get sun in the morning at the front of their house. There are many factors that determine whether a hydrangea will thrive in your space based on the amount of sun a specific area of your yard receives at certain times of the day. Do you have areas where water accumulates? Do you have pets that prefer certain areas of the yard? How

much time are you willing to dedicate to maintaining your yard? Do I have the space for certain plants? These are all questions you should ask yourself before heading to the Garden Center. Remember, reading the plant label is helpful, but you have to keep in mind that the label just describes what a plant will do in a general climate setting. If you’re not sure, swing by and ask us!

Bennett Funeral Service — Because There Is a Difference. Proudly serving families across the Catawba Valley and Lake Norman Region.

Bennett Funeral Service WHY EARLY PLANNING BRINGS PEACE OF MIND

With a true spirit of kindness, the staff of Bennett Funeral Service considers it a privilege to walk beside your family every step of the journey when it’s time to remember a loved one.

Their own family traditions guide them along that path as they provide a supportive space to honor your family member, while stressing respect and compassion. As part of that journey with you, they offer comprehensive funeral pre-planning options that are easy to navigate and comforting in ways you may not have imagined.

“Pre-planning is much easier than most people expect,” shares Kyle Bennett. “It’s really just a conversation – one that brings peace of mind not only to you, but also to the people you love most. Families often tell us the greatest gift is knowing their wishes are already taken care of.”

When you’re ready to be proactive and begin the preplanning process, it can be deeply meaningful to include immediate family members in your decisions, leaving them confident they understand your personal wishes.

“Our pre-planning process allows you to decide every detail of how you want to be celebrated and remembered,” Kyle adds.

Once death occurs, your friends and family are struggling with a wide range of thoughts and emotions, and having your funeral or memorial service pre-arranged takes the burden away from them at that difficult moment. It eases the stress of thinking they may be making decisions that would go against your wishes and prevents them from making hurried decisions that can be costly and disappointing.

While pre-funding your funeral arrangements does mean those funds are set aside and protected from inflation and cost increases, pre-funding is not required to complete the pre-planning process. And, if you move or relocate, your personalized funeral plan can be transferred to any funeral home in the United States.

“To help clarify a common misconception: If you have preplanned with another funeral home in the United States, your pre-need arrangements can be easily transferred to Bennett Funeral Service. Give us a call and we will assist you with this process,” explains Robbie Bennett.

As you begin the pre-planning process, you’ll first consider what style of funeral or memorial service you envision: formal, informal, strictly traditional or something offbeat. Think about what truly tells your life story.

You can arrange for your service to be at Bennett Funeral Service’s facilities, outdoors at a favorite spot or even at your home. Their team is fully committed to accommodating all beliefs, faiths, lifestyles and relationships.

Next, you’ll make specific decisions regarding your choice of burial or cremation, directives for a visitation or viewing (such as having an open or closed casket) and any other personal decisions regarding attire or aesthetics.

Pre-planning your funeral arrangements also means family members won’t feel the need to rush through the process – frantic to make the best decisions – and instead can focus on the healing power and closure of a meaningful service. That service can be a welcome opportunity to share stories and heartfelt memories with other family and friends –celebrating and honoring a life.

Download Bennett Funeral Service’s Free Planning Guide from their website – bennettfuneralservice.com –or call either location for more information on planning, as well as their commitment to honoring Veterans. Bennett Funeral Service is located at 7878 NC Highway 16 in Newton, NC, 828.465.2111, and in Conover, NC, at 502 1st Avenue South, 828.465.2025.

“When we lost our daddy in 2018, he had made no prior arrangements, trusting that our mother would take care of everything. In the midst of our grief, this left our family with the overwhelming responsibility of planning his funeral during an already painful time. After that experience, our mother met with Robbie Bennett and completed her pre-need arrangements. Having everything in place gave her great peace of mind, knowing her wishes would be honored. When we lost her in 2024, her planning eased the burden on our family and allowed us to focus on honoring her life and supporting one another.”

A RELAXED BOATING SEASON STARTS NOW!

When you first meet Kenyon Stanley, read his clever blog, or talk to any of his customers, you’ll immediately sense how passionate he is about any and all things boat.

A self-confirmed “recovering” marketing executive, Kenyon knew a lifestyle shift was needed a few years back, around the same time he realized it was hard to find top-tier boat detailing that met his standards in the Lake Norman area.

As a lifelong boat enthusiast, Kenyon detailed boats as a summer job during high school and college. Now, tapping into his extensive “life on the water” experience has created the ideal niche, comfortably away from the corporate world, and the perfect next chapter for his family, which includes wife, Jessica, and sons, KJ and Matthew. Both sons are frequent assistants to Kenyon, and a lifetime spent on the water shows in their quality work! While Jessica is a corporate executive in Charlotte, her thoughtful input can be seen throughout the Details Matter brand. She and Kenyon make the most of their travels for Matthew’s sports outings — competitive rock climbing and wrestling — but always find time for sunset cruises for two!

The Stanleys have called the Lake Norman area home for nearly 20 years, after a 2006 move from Washington State, and they have come to appreciate the community feel that comes naturally to lake dwellers. Details Matter was the natural next step!

“I’ve owned boats my whole life and I’ve always kept them spotless,” Kenyon explains. “Caring for my own boats was my escape during a hectic corporate life. That passion, blended with my decidedly detail-oriented personality, means exceeding my clients’ expectations is a given.”

Now, all of Lake Norman has the opportunity to care for their boats with the best products, from folks who truly care for their customers.

Details Matter is a full-service mobile boat detailer known for providing quick quotes and even more efficient expertise. Kenyon’s goal is to be the best detailer around Lake Norman … period. His main mission is for your time on the water to be spent in the most relaxed way possible, knowing your boat has recently left his expert care. While the future of Details Matter will likely include training crews to carry on his standards, right now he’s enjoying keeping the business a family affair.

If you’re local, and catching a glimpse of Kenyon on the water, he’s likely readying a client’s vessel or savoring a few minutes of family time on his own boat. On land, he’s probably running (even on the chilliest days!) and most often accompanied by his four-legged companions. Besides his impeccable work ethic, Kenyon is known around the lake for sharing plenty of quality time with his two goldendoodles, Teddy Bear and Jo-Jo, who love the water as much as he does.

Continued on page 30.

Continued from page 29.

“We love our local run clubs, and we regularly run with Hoptown Run Club on Tuesdays, and with Nightclubs Suck on Friday nights,” Kenyon adds. Always on the lookout for dog-friendly 5K and 10K races, he’d love any recommendations for upcoming events you may know about!

You’ll also find Kenyon volunteering throughout the community and meeting clients where they are, which usually means becoming fast friends.

“I’ve done the corporate growth playbook, so growth for me now is intentional, steady, and focused on relationships,” he shares. “My

clients are my neighbors, and I want neighbors to become friends. Whether we’re tied up at Little Myrtle on a Saturday or restoring gelcoat in March, it’s personal.”

Kenyon realizes clients aren’t just handing over a boat to him, they’re trusting him with something they truly care about. There is a general kinship among boaters. When clients hire Details Matter, Kenyon believes trust matters more than transactions, and his values will always elevate people over process. In fact, his LinkedIn profile now says, “Not So Korporate Kenyon.”

“Their boat is an escape from reality. I get that — because I lived that reality,” he shares. “Clear communication, doing exactly what you

say you’ll do, and treating every boat like it’s my own is how I roll. I’ve also learned that saying ‘no’ to work that isn’t a good fit protects both the customer and the brand.”

BRING ON SUMMER!

As we attempt to put winter behind us, what are some of the biggest challenges of preparing boats for the season?

“Mold doesn’t take the winter off,” Kenyon explains. “Bad covers, cold nights, random warm spells, and trapped moisture turn boats into Five-Star mold resorts. By spring, it’s everywhere, and completely uninvited. Dealing with mold early keeps owners from launching the season with a floating biology project instead of a clean boat. Plus, we often find some unwelcome ‘stowaways’ as in raccoons, muskrats, etc.”

His best advice for spring and summer preparedness is to start early.

“Spring schedules fill quickly, and those early ‘details’ are essential to ensure your vessel is properly treated. Early cleaning,

surface protection, and preventive care set customers up to enjoy the season instead of scrambling once the lake gets busy,” he adds. “Read our blog! We write once a month in the off-season and at least once a week beginning March 21.”

Having Starke certification also sets Details Matter apart, as they are one of only three Starke certified installers in the Lake Norman area. Considered the gold standard in marine detailing, that level of mastery ensures every product is used as intended for lasting results. Every boat is restored properly, protected longer, and treated with the same care Kenyon would expect for his own boat, and has been providing for his cove neighbors for years.

“We use professional marine compounds to properly restore gelcoat based on its condition, which is not a one-size-fits-all approach, nor is it the out-of-the-box products you’ll find at local hardware stores. For protection, we choose Hydro Guard over traditional wax, which simply doesn’t hold up in Lake Norman’s heat, due to its low melting point. Hydro Guard

bonds to the surface for longer-lasting protection and easier maintenance,” he explains. “I also rely on Starke’s core detail products, including their mildew cleaners and surface treatments, because they’re highly effective and simply the best for marine environments. We’ve seen an increase in demand for the premium service of advanced gelcoat restoration, deeper oxidation removal, and specialty surface treatments in the last few months, all services that help customers protect their boats. These services are for lasting results, not short-term shine.”

Even when a particular project poses unique challenges, it’s simply in his genes to focus until there’s a shiny boat just waiting to head for home.

“We love coming in and restoring a boat the client thinks is too far gone,” he adds, knowing that level of satisfaction isn’t something found on a spreadsheet. “This is exactly where I’m meant to be.”

Call, text or email Kenyon for an immediate quote on the full interior or full exterior services your boat deserves. Reach him at kenyon@ detailsmatternc.com, 704.302.5873 or request a quote and consultation online at detailsmatternc.com. Kristin Johnson Speaks SHARING STORIES & CHANGING LIVES

Kristin Johnson is filled with unmistakable joy about her newest journey, and she can’t wait for you to join her!

In the meantime, she shares her morning mantra.

“My daily motivation begins with one simple practice. Before I put my feet on the ground, I quietly say, ‘Good morning, God. I’m available.’ It helps me stay grounded in the day, whether that’s pouring into my children as their mom, spending time with my husband and parents, showing up for community, preparing a keynote, recording a podcast, doing the dishes or stepping onstage.”

If you’re ever part of her audience, she’ll ask the same of you. Are you available for what God created you to be? Are you available for your family or for leadership in your community? She’ll remind you the only way to truly know what’s next is to jump in!

Kristin now leads a professional speaking and event-hosting brand, partnering with organizations and companies to deliver keynotes, emcee events and facilitate meaningful conversations.

A Forsyth County girl through-and-through, Kristin is a Winston-Salem native who spent 16 years as Director of Historic Broyhill in Clemmons.

“I had the privilege of working alongside incredible colleagues and building relationships with business owners, tenants and community leaders who shaped my life as much as I hope I shaped that space,” shares Kristin. “Those years left me committed to helping people and organizations flourish together.”

Kristin first realized her passion for public speaking during her first term as President of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce.

“I was honestly nervous and still remember standing in front of the membership that first month with a sheet of paper in my hand that was visibly shaking. The second month was the same. By the third month, I had the bright idea to use thicker paper just to hide my nerves. Somewhere around month four or five, the nerves began to fade and something surprising happened. I realized I was actually looking forward to being up there. I enjoyed it!”

As requests to emcee events and lead workshops started coming her way, Kristin felt that inner spark.

“Those speaking invitations kept coming, and the more I said ‘yes,’ the more I felt energized by the work,” she shares. “I knew this was something I was being gently called to do and something I needed to pursue more fully.”

Now, with her new venture of full-time public speaking in full swing, you’ll catch a glimpse of Kristin, the storyteller.

“I’ve always loved telling a good story because it has a way of drawing people in. It helps an audience feel they aren’t alone in what they have experienced. When you hear someone describe a moment that is funny, familiar or even uncomfortable, something shifts. People start thinking, hey, that’s happened to me, too!”

If you’ve attended a Kristin Johnson-led event, you’ve seen her tap into both humor and honesty to create real connection.

“It becomes less about me and more about the people in the room feeling seen, understood and encouraged to reflect on their lives. When people ask who my audience is, my answer is simple: human beings. If you’re a person with a story, with emotions or with challenges, there’s space for you in the conversation.”

As an emcee, Kristin immerses herself in connecting perfect strangers.

“My responsibility is to step on stage and weave that golden thread of connection between people who may not know each other – yet. When that happens, it becomes more than a program. It becomes a shared human experience, with maybe even life changing next steps.”

Kristin’s own experiences have shaped her engaging style. “I’ve emceed an entire event where my co-host spoke only Swahili, and I was one of the only Englishspeaking people in the room. It was a beautiful night because human connection goes deeper than language. I’ve spoken to groups far outside my own world – like scientists – and the same thing holds true. When you speak to people as people first, you create comfort and belonging.”

Kristin’s first book titled, I’m Available: How to Receive and Live Your Unique Purpose is set to release in late summer. She dubbed it an invitation to live fearlessly in pursuit of what you were created to do. “Each of us carries a unique set of gifts, and the book helps readers reflect on what it means to be available for the things that lead to a meaningful life.”

This is just the beginning! Join Kristin’s growing community by following Kristin Johnson Speaks for continued stories, purpose-driven leadership and book release updates.

Great Design 4 U THOUGHTFUL INTERIOR DESIGN FOR ELEVATED LIVING

Aboutique design studio in Mooresville, NC, Great Design 4 U is truly devoted to its mission statement to bring beauty, inspiration and positive energy into your home. As founder and principal designer, Anna Stowe has always found herself inspired by the power of intentional design.

“When proportion, materials and craftsmanship are thoughtfully considered, a home naturally supports ease, balance and elevated living. Guiding clients in refining their spaces into environments that feel both enduring and effortless is what motivates my work each day,” she shares.

Supported by a small in-house team handling operations and administration, Anna also works with a trusted network of professional partners – ranging from delivery to installation – allowing her to scale each project with precision, while maintaining a highly personalized client experience.

“We just completed a major home renovation, new kitchen, new master bathroom and new hardwood floors. Choosing styles and colors was not our forte and, because of the expense of the project, we called in Anna. She did a wonderful job with everything from A to Z – the lighting, the fixtures, the paint, as well as the tub and shower designs, tile, color – same thing with the kitchen counters and cabinets. She asked some questions up front, and she was able to capture the design and look we wanted to achieve. She was always there when we needed her – including the times it was important to be on site! Everything turned out amazing!”

A graduate of High Point University with a bachelor’s degree in interior design, Anna founded Great Design 4 U in 2008 after gaining experience across the design industry that includes furniture and finish specification, rug construction and custom window treatments. That well-founded foundation and more than 30 years of experience – along with discerning taste and skill at personal connections – sets her apart in the local design community.

“We bring a strong foundation in design education and real world execution, a refined studio environment for thoughtful collaboration and an extensive network of trusted professionals and product partners,” shares Anna. “This allows us to offer a highly curated, seamless experience that’s both personal and exceptionally well executed.”

While living in Charlotte, Anna found her work more and more centered around the Lake Norman area, making her move here a natural progression. She’s lived in Huntersville and now Mooresville, and fully considers Lake Norman her home.

While new construction and remodeling projects make up a significant portion of Anna’s design work, her team also handles a variety of decorative projects, offering full service from concept to completion. Their curated network of extraordinary vendors includes custom furniture, timeless wood pieces, lighting, fabrics and accessories.

“We begin with a thoughtful ‘discovery’ process (a complimentary call or appointment), using detailed questionnaires and meaningful conversations to truly understand our clients. By investing the time upfront, we create clarity and trust, allowing the design process to feel seamless, personal and well managed from start to finish,” she explains.

Seeing the design industry as more than just current trends, Anna believes how a home reflects the people inside it – and how they function daily – is the ultimate focal point.

“My approach is to create spaces that feel current and relevant, while remaining deeply personal and practical,” she adds. “When design balances timeless elements with thoughtful, lifestyle-driven choices, it feels elevated and authentic.”

Great Design 4 U offers services that include tile, granite and stone selection, formulating lighting plans, plumbing fixture selections, budget planning and project management, theme rooms and creative children’s room décor, selection of accessories and artwork, flooring selection, window treatments and inspiration boards!

Anna’s passion for travel means you’ll see global influences blended with her timeless design principles. Her attention to detail and commitment to quality at the highest level means you’ll always feel comfortable at home — and that translates to a beautiful life!

You can reach Anna Stowe at 704.305.0139 or email anna@greatdesign4u.com. Follow the studio on Instagram @ greatdesign4u, and visit greatdesign4u. com to schedule your free discovery appointment. Great Design 4 U is located at 172 N Broad Street, Suite 102, in Mooresville, NC. Anna and her team are available to travel throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

“Anna is amazing...she is super passionate and talented! After our wedding, my husband and I struggled to combine our two homes into one, and Anna helped piece our vastly different style needs into something that worked beautifully. What felt disjointed before, now feels polished, yet comfortable. We feel at home and love our ‘new to us’ space! What started out as an initial design consultation turned into a whole house renovation!”

Simply Jolene HAVING FUN WITH THOROUGHLY MODERN STYLE

When April rolls around in a few weeks, Kathy Brown will happily celebrate one year as owner of Simply Jolene – a delightful boutique in Denver, NC that can best be described as down-to-Earth chic!

Offering unique clothing lines such as Jaded Gypsy (their biggest seller), Sweet Grace, A Rare Bird and Natural Life, there’s a welcoming, relaxed vibe at Simply Jolene where you’ll love finding selections for all ages that aren’t carried elsewhere in the area.

Kathy is confident those bold, modern styles and that carefree atmosphere are what keep customers coming back to the shop. And, by their second visit, rest assured those happy customers have already become friends.

“People love coming into Simply Jolene for the environment, and we have many customers come in just to hang out,” she adds. “We love to make new friends!”

Her mission will always be to make sure every shopper leaves feeling supremely confident with their new wardrobe selections.

“We don’t carry the generic ‘boutique’ clothing styles – each item we sell is something we hand pick, knowing our customers will love it,” Kathy shares.

She is quick to admit she favors “out there” fashion choices – a little Boho and a lot eclectic. A hairdresser for more than 35 years, Kathy is originally from Fulshear, Texas, but traveled to North Carolina frequently with

her son, Kade, who is in the racecar industry. Eventually making the permanent move to Denver, NC, Kathy took the best parts of her previous career – making people feel special, beautiful and confident in their own way – and fulfilled the dream to own her own boutique.

“We started our Simply Jolene journey renting spaces at other stores to sell our favorite clothing,” she shares. “After a few years, I decided I wanted to have my own boutique.”

Simply Jolene is now conveniently located in a small, but endlessly charming, brick house next to Denver Furniture and across the street from Stacy’s Restaurant.

“I fell in love with this small brick house because it felt so ‘homey’ and like the perfect unique place to build a business,” Kathy shares.

She’s joined in the Simply Jolene adventure by Chloe Powell – who just happens to be dating her son – and who perfectly selects fashions for the younger crowd. Chloe has an eye for Boho, but with more simple styling, while Kathy’s the connoisseur of the more modern hippie chic clothing styles that happily do still appeal to all generations. The two complement each other, while covering the tastes of all age groups and broadening the boutique’s loyal customer base.

“As a small business owner, I really strive to help each individual feel confident, beautiful and comfortable in their own choices,” Kathy adds.

That always means talking and getting to know each customer on a personal level to best help them find their own unique look. These ladies are skilled at guiding shoppers in choosing outfits they might not otherwise try on and encouraging them to feel wonderful about what they’re wearing.

“The Sweet Grace line, in particular, originated in South Carolina but was a super popular brand in Texas,” Kathy explains. “When I opened the boutique here, I knew it was going to be my signature for the store. Everyone who comes in LOVES it!”

Stop by this lovable boutique in Denver, and let Kathy and Chloe help you discover your inner hippie style, sprinkled with a bit of Boho magic. You’ll go home with new outfits and accessories guaranteed to brighten every single day!

Simply Jolene is located at 3797 N NC-16 Bus Hwy in Denver, NC, 704.685.4776. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Follow Simply Jolene for fun updates and brand new styles on Facebook and Instagram @simplyjoleneboutique.

Inspiring Women to Dream Big CARRIE ARNOLD’S NEXT JOURNEY AWAITS

In our February issue, we introduced you to Lake Norman resident Carrie Arnold, an accomplished motivational speaker, dedicated mentor and now a first officer on a Boeing 767 with ABX Air Inc. flying freight for Amazon and DHL.

Before reaching this personal long-time goal, Carrie raised a family and established herself as a savvy sales professional, always with a giant sized dream in mind. While taking her passion for the skies to a new and exciting level, she re-certified her commercial instrument pilot license and secured a commercial multi-engine rating.

Reaching that milestone has prompted Carrie to inspire women of all ages to realize their full potential, as she prepares to set out on another unexpected journey! This month, you’ll find Carrie focused on the Mrs. North Carolina pageant, after being nominated as the

Mrs. Iredell County delegate for the state pageant. While definitely something she never envisioned herself doing, Carrie is excited about the opportunity, where she hopes to make an empowering run and inspire her “sisters in the skies and behind the mics” as they, too, keep spreading their wings.

The winner of the Mrs. North Carolina pageant will travel the Tar Heel State promoting her personal platform and the ideals of the pageant organization and will go on to compete at the national level in the Mrs. America Pageant. The winner of that coveted Mrs. America crown will travel across the country making personal appearances during her year’s reign, again with a chance to promote her personal platform. Mrs. America also represents our country in the Mrs. World Pageant.

“Running for Mrs. North Carolina through America Pageants is a journey that blends self discovery, discipline and courage,” shares Carrie. “It begins long before stepping on stage, with setting goals, refining personal style and developing confidence from the inside out.” Contestants prepare with an eye on fitness, wardrobe, planning, interview, practice and talent or platform development, all while learning how to present their authentic selves under pressure. Along the way, they build resilience, poise and a strong sense of purpose. By the time the spotlight hits, the pageant is no longer just about crowns or titles – it’s a celebration of growth, commitment and the confidence to be seen and heard.

“We can do many things,” Carrie shares. “Just like with flying (when we all initially started), I’m stepping way out of my comfort zone with the pageant! I’m not a beauty queen…nor a career pageant contestant; but, I’m excited to learn and push boundaries that are unexpected.”

Continuing to spread her ongoing message of positivity and dream building, Carrie is also scheduled to be a podcast guest with workshop business coach, Lori Anne De Lulio Casdia, founder of LDC Strategies and the host of HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WITH LORI ANNE. With coverage throughout New York and Florida, her inspiring words are sure to connect with an even broader audience.

“I’ve been told by many women that my career story is especially empowering for mid-transitional ‘career pivot’ individuals,” Carrie explains.

Being completely vulnerable, she’s hopeful you’ll share her story on your own social media – and among friends – to encourage others to take their own risk and try something new.

“It’s NOT too late. I am living proof that you can start (or restart) flying in your 30s, 40s or even 50s!” she adds. “Don’t give up on your dreams – no matter what they are. Those dreamscapes are not placed here by accident!”

You can connect with Carrie Arnold on Instagram @crushingtheclouds. The Mrs. North Carolina Pageant will be held on March 14, 2026 at the James Warren Citizen Center in Lincolnton, NC. Art in Motion HOLDING SPACE: THE PAINTINGS OF RACHEL SIMINOSKI

For Rachel Siminoski, art has never been something separate from life—it has always been there, quietly woven into her earliest memories. According to her mother, Siminoski toddled around the house clutching a notepad and pencil, scribbling with purpose long before she could articulate why. Growing up surrounded by artwork made by family members—including her great grandmother, father, and uncle—creativity felt less like a choice and more like an atmosphere. Still, it wasn’t until halfway through college that she began to see art not just as a passion, but as a possible path forward.

That path was shaped early on by pivotal mentors who offered a glimpse into what an artistic life could look like. A middle school summer drawing class with artist Jill Crowe— who later became one of Siminoski’s high school art teachers—left a lasting impression.

Crowe’s studio, nestled on her property, was the first space where Siminoski could envision herself as a working artist. One drawing from that class still hangs in her parents’ dining room as a quiet marker of beginnings. Later, during her undergraduate years, professor Mariam Stephan played a transformative role. Teaching Advanced Drawing during Siminoski’s senior year, Stephan pushed her to work faster and more intuitively. The solution was unexpected: painting. Though Siminoski had never taken a formal painting course, picking up a brush unlocked a new way of thinking and working that continues to shape her practice today.

Originally a biology major, Siminoski switched to Studio Art halfway through her sophomore year, eventually concentrating in Printmaking and Drawing. That scientific foundation still informs her work, which often references biological systems such as membranes, cells, lungs, and the spine.

Her paintings depict abstract, biomorphic enclosures that explore themes of transition, growth, renewal, and change—both physical and emotional. Raised by a chemist and guided by her own curiosity about science, she approaches painting as a kind of problemsolving exercise, often likening the process to a game of chess: one thoughtful move at a time.

Siminoski works primarily with fluid acrylics on canvas or panel, stretching, priming, and sanding her own surfaces to achieve a smoothness that allows for subtle tonal shifts and saturated color. Each painting begins with sketches—often on tracing paper—where she refines structure while allowing room for evolution. Though she values planning, the final work always diverges from its origin. Intuition and responsiveness guide the process, and part of the excitement lies in remaining open to change.

As a mother of young children, Siminoski’s studio practice is shaped by the realities of caregiving. Her days are fluid, with studio time often carved out during nap windows or late evenings. Consistency, rather than long uninterrupted hours, is the goal. Sketchbooks

become spaces for journaling, drawing, and organizing thoughts, while painting happens whenever time allows. She credits her husband’s encouragement as a vital source of support, reminding her to protect time for making.

Motherhood has profoundly transformed both her life and her visual language. Earlier grayscale, architectural forms have softened into warmer, womb-like spaces filled with color and care. Major life events—including grief and loss—have continued to reshape her imagery, expanding her visual lexicon and emotional depth. Recently, Siminoski has been exploring the idea of luck, incorporating symbols like four-leaf clovers and horseshoes while questioning how fortune shifts during life’s transitional moments.

When viewers encounter her work, Siminoski hopes they feel a sense of connection—perhaps even recognition. Many describe her paintings as nurturing or protective, responses she holds close. Currently, she is experimenting with scaled-up cut-paper drawings arranged directly on the wall, laying the groundwork for a new body of work that moves beyond the traditional rectangular canvas.

Siminoski currently has two paintings featured in the Director’s Choice exhibition at the Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, North Carolina, on view through March 7. For emerging artists, her advice is simple but hard-earned: keep making work. Persistence matters. For herself, success looks like painting every day, continuing to exhibit, and someday supporting her family as a full-time artist. If she could offer her younger self one piece of wisdom, it would be this: trust your intuition, and follow what feels right.

HOW TO PASS DOWN A VACATION HOME WITHOUT PASSING DOWN CONFLICT

For many families, a vacation home is a place layered with memories, where generations gather each summer to laugh and share traditions. Yet, when it comes time to plan the future of the home, emotion and money can pull in opposite directions. Vacation home estate planning can keep heads level when the conversation becomes overwhelming.

BALANCING SENTIMENT AND PRACTICALITY

When you begin passing down a vacation home, start by asking: do your heirs actually want it? Some will, others might not. Let’s say you have a lake home. One of your children lives nearby, but the other lives out of state. How will the out-of-state family feel about the ongoing taxes and maintenance costs of a home they rarely use? Setting clear expectations through open discussion can prevent tension once the estate is settled.

WAYS TO STRUCTURE OWNERSHIP

Several approaches can help an inherited vacation home stay a source of joy instead of conflict.

• Trusts: A trust can manage how the home is maintained and who makes key decisions. It also helps to avoid the probate process.

• LLCs: A limited liability company allows heirs to own shares rather than direct title. This simplifies voting rights and cost sharing while reducing personal risk.

• Buyout Clauses: Giving heirs a way to purchase each other’s interests can protect family relationships if not everyone wants to keep the property.

Each option carries legal and tax consequences, so coordination among your advisor, attorney and accountant is critical.

TAXES: WHAT HEIRS SHOULD KNOW

The tax implications of inherited property can vary widely. Heirs often receive a “step-up” in cost basis, meaning the property’s taxable value resets to its market value at the time of inheritance. That can reduce potential capital gains taxes if they sell later.

Even so, estate taxes on vacation homes may apply for high-value estates. Thresholds and exemption amounts change over time, and each state sets its own rules on estate or inheritance taxes. Regular reviews with your advisor and tax professional help keep your plan current as laws evolve.

KEEPING OR SELLING THE PROPERTY

When multiple heirs are involved, fairly dividing assets among heirs can become

tricky. One child might dream of keeping the home while another prefers a cash inheritance. The estate plan should explain exactly how to handle keeping or selling inherited property so that your family avoids conflict during an already emotional time.

Some families choose to sell the home and use the proceeds to fund a charitable vehicle or a family trust, preserving the shared spirit without the upkeep of ownership.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Your vacation home can remain a family treasure when it’s backed by a clear plan. By including vacation home estate planning in your overall wealth strategy, you help future generations enjoy what you built instead of arguing over it.

COMING FULL CIRCLE, ERICKA ELLIS-STEWART LEADS MENTAL

HEALTH AMERICA OF CENTRAL CAROLINAS INTO A NEW CHAPTER

The longtime advocate and leader moves into position to guide the organization’s mission of expanding access to mental health care across the region.

Mental Health America of Central Carolinas (MHA) has long been a steady presence in our community — as a beacon of hope where Access, Advocacy, and Education come together to support individuals and families when they need it most.

For decades, the organization has worked quietly and persistently to ensure mental wellness is not a privilege, but a shared community commitment.

This year, MHA steps into a new season of leadership with a familiar, trusted, and deeply rooted voice at the helm. On February 2, 2026, Ericka Ellis-Stewart began serving as Acting Executive Director, guiding the organization into its next chapter, with both reverence for its legacy and a clear-eyed vision for its future. Her appointment represents continuity of mission, renewal of purpose, and a reaffirmation of MHA’s core values.

Ericka’s connection to MHA is both professional and profoundly personal. Over the years, she has been a strategist, a steward, and a steadfast advocate for mental health equity across the Carolinas. Even more than that, she has been part of the community MHA serves — bringing lived experience, empathy, and authenticity into every space she enters.

“This organization has been home to me for many years — as a leader, a learner, a person with lived experience, and someone who believes wholeheartedly in the power of mental health advocacy, education, and access,” Ericka reflects. “MHA’s mission is deeply personal to me, and I am honored to lead this next chapter with steadiness, transparency, and care for both our people and our community.”

The MHA Board of Directors expressed strong confidence in Ericka’s leadership — highlighting her ability to provide stability while strengthening programs, partnerships, and community impact. Board President Joe Machicote noted that her experience and character make her uniquely suited for this moment in the organization’s history.

Continued on page 52.

Continued from page 50.

“Ericka brings deep institutional knowledge, trusted leadership, and a strong commitment to our mission. We are confident in her ability to lead us forward,” Machicote said.

Her leadership arrives at a time when conversations about mental health are more open than ever — yet the need for accessible care, community connection, and systemic change remains urgent. Ericka’s approach centers MHA’s three pillars:

ACCESS: Expanding pathways to support so that no one has to navigate mental health challenges alone. Under Ericka’s guidance, MHA remains committed to reducing barriers, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that resources reach those who need them most.

ADVOCACY: Elevating lived experience and pushing systems toward greater compassion, equity, and accountability. Ericka has spent her career amplifying voices that too often go unheard and building coalitions that create real, lasting change.

EDUCATION: Empowering individuals, families, and institutions with knowledge, skills, and understanding that reduce stigma and promote wellness. From training to community conversations, MHA continues to meet people where they are—inviting them into learning with dignity and respect.

Ericka’s own journey reflects these values. For nearly three decades, she has been a servant leader within the region’s nonprofit ecosystem, tirelessly serving at-risk youth, combatting food insecurity, and empowering individuals and families through educational attainment and improved economic mobility. Her work has always bridged care and action, compassion and strategy.

In addition to her nonprofit leadership, Ericka served as an elected official in the CharlotteMecklenburg region for nearly a decade, bringing her commitment to equity and community wellbeing into public service. This blend of lived experience, nonprofit leadership, and civic engagement shapes her vision for MHA — one that is collaborative, courageous, and community-centered.

“At its heart, mental health work is about humanity,” Ericka says. “It’s about seeing people fully, honoring their stories, and creating spaces where healing and possibility can take root.”

That spirit is especially alive as MHA prepares for its signature annual fundraising event — the “In the Limelight Gala” — returning on May 1, 2026. More than a celebration, the Gala is a

gathering of community, where hope, resilience, and shared purpose take center stage.

This year’s event will spotlight not only MHA’s programs and impact, but also the people who make its work possible. In a meaningful new chapter, MHA will debut its inaugural Mental Health Community Champions Honors cohort by recognizing individuals whose leadership, courage, and service have advanced mental health awareness and well-being across the Carolinas.

Guests at the May 1st Gala can expect an elegant evening filled with moving stories, meaningful recognition, and opportunities to invest directly in MHA’s mission. Through live and silent auctions, event sponsorships, and community engagement, attendees will play a tangible role in expanding access to mental health education, support, and advocacy throughout the region.

Whether you’re a longtime supporter or new to MHA’s work, the Gala promises to be an evening of connection, reflection, and collective impact — an embodiment of MHA’s belief that healing happens in community.

For now, the message is clear: This is a season of reconnection, restoration, and renewed mission. With Ericka Ellis-Stewart’s return, Mental Health America of Central Carolinas moves forward rooted in experience, strengthened by compassion, and guided by a leader who understands true progress begins by meeting people where they are — and walking with them toward hope.

In our April issue, LKN Magazine will continue Ericka’s story, exploring the evolution of the “In The Limelight Gala”, introducing members of the inaugural Mental Health Community Champions Honors Cohort, and highlighting the partnerships shaping this year’s celebration. Readers will gain deeper insight into how Ericka’s own journey has inspired a renewed vision for mental health awareness, access, and community engagement across the Lake Norman region and beyond.

March Madness BASKETBALL, BRACKETS & UNPREDICTABILITY

Every year, as winter melts away and the first signs of spring start to emerge, one thing remains constant in the United States –March Madness. No, it’s not a nationwide outbreak of insanity (though it sometimes feels that way); it’s the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, a three-week extravaganza that captivates the country, defies logic and produces as many high-flying dunks as it does headaches for anyone trying to fill out a perfect bracket.

The Madness kicks off in mid-March and quickly spirals into chaos, with 68 college basketball teams battling it out in a single-elimination tournament. The tournament’s format, with games played across various cities and culminated by a climactic Final Four, is a spectacle of sport, tradition and drama. However, if you’re looking for a clearcut favorite to win, prepare to be disappointed. The unpredictability of March Madness is what makes it, well, madness.

Brackets: Where Logic Goes to Die

One of the most enduring traditions of March Madness is the bracket challenge. Fans – both casual and die-hard – fill out their predictions for the entire tournament, from the first round all the way through the championship game. The goal? To correctly guess which teams will advance and ultimately win. Simple, right? If only it were that easy.

March Madness is famous for its upsets, where lower-seeded teams (also known as “Cinderella” teams) take down heavy favorites. The odds of selecting a perfect bracket are so astronomically low that they’re practically nonexistent. So, when your cousin Dave, who hasn’t watched a single game all season, picks the team with the coolest mascot to go all the way, don’t be too surprised when his bracket performs better than yours.

One of the great joys of March Madness is witnessing the “Cinderella story.” Every year, a team that was overlooked or dismissed by the

experts rises from obscurity to take down top-ranked opponents. These surprise underdogs are the ones that turn the tournament into a spectacle of the improbable. Just ask George Mason University in 2006 or Florida Gulf Coast University in 2013 when they became household names, not because they were expected to win, but because they shocked the basketball world.

The Madness Behind the Madness

So, why is it called “March Madness?” Well, the term was originally coined in 1939 by an Illinois high school basketball official named Henry V. Porter, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that it became synonymous with the NCAA tournament. As TV broadcasts grew in popularity, more and more fans began tuning in to watch the drama unfold – complete with buzzer beaters, crazy upsets and teams advancing against all odds.

And, while most of the country is glued to their TVs, businesses also see a massive uptick in productivity losses. March Madness is so all consuming that millions of people end up “sick” for work, pretending to have the flu as they stay home to watch their team’s improbable run to the Sweet 16. It’s a phenomenon known as “office pool fever,” and it’s as contagious as any virus.

The Final Shot

In the end, March Madness isn’t just about basketball; it’s about community, camaraderie and chaos. It’s a time when casual fans can get as invested as lifelong followers, where every game feels like the most important thing in the world and where bracket-busting upsets bring people together in a shared experience of delightful frustration. Whether you’re a basketball fanatic or someone who couldn’t care less about sports, March Madness is a wild ride that’s impossible to ignore.

And, who knows? Maybe this year, the unthinkable will happen – and your bracket will finally be the one to break the curse of perfection. But, probably not.

Into the Muddy Deep:TRIUMPH IN THE SILT

By early November, the wind had settled down, but my obsession had not.

Somewhere beneath Lake Norman – 40 to 50’ meters deep – my foil kit lay buried in muddy darkness. I had already hired a diver the day after the incident. He surfaced cold, shaken and empty-handed, reporting what I didn’t want to accept: the water was so silty that visibility dropped to nearly zero down on the bottom.

Still, the CLT Windsurfing Junkies don’t quit easily.

Search attempts turned into weekend missions. I upgraded my GPS strategy, trading handheld guesswork for precise satellite mapping. Then came the engineering figuring out effective tools and better strategies to comb the bottom of Lake Norman.

I built a trawl net out of a volleyball net. No luck. I built a bigger net – twice the size – with a heavy chain as weight and crafted “otter boards” designed to keep the mouth open like a real commercial trawler. Still no luck, I tried more diving, this time on my own. Still nothing. Perhaps I have been searching in the wrong place; what if the foil didn’t just sink straight down? What if it flipped over and flew through the water column – gliding down in an unpredictable speed and direction?

I tried with a fish camera and display screen, modifying it in so many ways that the original manufacturer wouldn’t recognize it. I fashioned a sun blinder for the display that may look like an NFL referee place review. I launched before sunrise so many days, spending hours and hours dragging the camera along the lake bottom – hunched over a screen, fighting glare, fighting wind, fighting exhaustion. I made friends with catfish and bass. I hallucinated shapes. I questioned my sanity.

Then, I did what any reasonable person would do after failing repeatedly.

I modified my search strategy and went off in a whimsical direction from my original GPS track. By early December, I could feel my search gear and new strategies may just work.

On December 3rd, I paddled out just after texting my Junkies group chat, “Should be out on the water in minutes, this time I explicitly and deceptively explained to FATE that I was not going to be actually searching for the foil. I was just going to be testing out my new search equipment.”

Three hours into the session, I was letting the wind push me farther and farther away from my original track, when I saw something on the screen that made my heart and head EXPLODE: white lettering. Clear as day: “AEON.”

There it was – my foil – resting on its side like a lost treasure. I marked it as fast as I could, dropping fluorescent buoys, recording multiple GPS points and paddling back to shore with frozen hands as the sun sank under the horizon.

The next morning, getting all my dive equipment ready, I explained to Donald that I would not get excited; if I locate it, I would first tie a search line to it and then drag it up from the surface safely. That is not what happened! Forty-four feet down on the bottom, visibility was zero, and in an instant I lost all hope. I set out on a slow crawl across the mushy bottom trying my best not to stir up any more silt. Here

and there, mysterious little ghost windows the size of softballs would randomly open up in the silt fog blanket. I peaked through one of these “ghost windows” and saw something like a blackish shadow; it was unnaturally completely straight – man made!

Without thinking, my right hand, dragging my arm behind it, and almost dislocating my shoulder, shot through the window and encircled my fingers with a vice grip around the foil’s titanium fuselage. With my left hand, I crushed my BC inflator button and shot back up to the surface with not a care for a safety stop. As I rocketed up off the miserable bottom, I lifted the foil way over my head so that it would pop out the surface just like the Crucifix of a Greek Diver on the Epiphany!

I popped out the surface of the lake in perfect triumph and absolute happiness! It was really a tremendous feeling of joy…very hard to explain. Donald looked just as happy. Just before handing him our treasure, I asked Donald if he got the video shot of me surfacing, and he said he wasn’t sure. So, I suggested I go back down about 16’ and we repeat, and this time he gets the glorious victory breaking the surface video for posterity.

We were both in the best spirits yelling and screaming and just enjoying the find like it was Blackbeard’s treasure. We went to a nearby bar to toast and celebrate SUCCESS. I said, “Hey, Donald, let’s do this, let’s promise each other that we will never tell anyone about the fact that we didn’t get the original video and we keep it our secret forever about the staged second video and never let anyone know,” and Donald agreed and we laughed like we ruled the world.

A few beers later, I said “Hey Donald, show me both the videos.” As he searched his phone, his countenance became more and more perplexed and agitated, and he finally looked up at me with the saddest face you’d ever seen. He said, “I swear, I swear I don’t know what happened, but both videos are GONE!”

A few hours later, as I drove through the crowded evening rush traffic, I thought: “Wow, you know what? When Don told me he lost the videos, I was bummed, but the more I think about it, this makes the WHOLE STORY an even BETTER STORY!”

THE LIVING HOME:

HOW

INDOOR PLANTS TRANSFORM

YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Walk into a home filled with thriving green plants, and you’ll immediately sense something different. The air feels fresher, the space more inviting, and there’s an undeniable vitality that sterile interiors simply cannot replicate. This isn’t mere aesthetic preference, science increasingly validates what plant enthusiasts have long understood: indoor plants fundamentally improve our living environments in measurable, meaningful ways.

THE MULTIFACETED BENEFITS OF INDOOR GREENERY

The case for bringing nature indoors extends far beyond decoration. Research from NASA’s Clean Air Study, conducted to improve air quality in space stations, revealed that common houseplants actively remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor air. These toxins, including formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene emanate from furniture, carpets, cleaning products, and building materials, creating a chemical soup in our supposedly safe homes.

Beyond air purification, plants influence indoor environments through transpiration, the process by which they release moisture into the air. In winter months when heating systems create desert-like conditions indoors, plants can increase humidity levels by 5 to 10 percent, alleviating dry skin, respiratory irritation, and static electricity. Studies have also documented psychological benefits: hospital patients with views of plants recover faster, office workers report increased productivity and reduced stress, and students demonstrate improved concentration in plant-filled classrooms.

MATCHING PLANTS TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Different homes present different environmental challenges, and fortunately, the plant kingdom offers specialized solutions for virtually every situation.

FOR AIR PURIFICATION

The snake plant stands as perhaps the ultimate air-cleaning champion. This hardy succulent performs a rare trick: unlike most plants, it converts carbon dioxide to oxygen at night through crassulacean acid metabolism, making it ideal for bedrooms. It’s also remarkably tolerant of neglect, surviving weeks without water and thriving in low light.

The spider plant rivals the snake plant in air-cleaning prowess while propagating readily through “spiderettes,” baby plants that dangle from the mother plant. Studies show spider plants can remove up to 90 percent of formaldehyde from the air within 24 hours. Their cascading habit makes them perfect for hanging baskets or high shelves.

Peace lilies combine elegance with functionality, removing ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene while producing beautiful white blooms. They prefer medium light and actually droop when thirsty, which is a helpful visual reminder for forgetful waterers.

FOR LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS

North-facing rooms and basement apartments need not remain plantless. The pothos vine thrives in dim conditions while trailing beautifully from shelves or climbing moss poles. Its heart-shaped leaves come in variegated patterns of green and gold, and it’s nearly indestructible by rooting easily in water when pruned.

Cast iron plants earn their name through sheer resilience, tolerating low light, temperature fluctuations, and irregular watering. Their broad, dark green leaves add architectural interest to shadowy corners where other plants would languish.

ZZ plants store water in their rhizomes, allowing them to survive both low light and drought. Their glossy, deep green leaves reflect available light, brightening dim spaces naturally.

FOR HUMIDITY AND MOISTURE CONTROL

Boston ferns excel at increasing indoor humidity, making them perfect for dry climates or winter

months. Their lush fronds create a jungle atmosphere, though they require consistent moisture and benefit from occasional misting.

Bamboo palms serve double duty, increasing humidity while filtering out formaldehyde and benzene. These elegant plants can grow quite large, creating natural room dividers that improve air quality throughout the space.

English ivy, while requiring moderate care, provides exceptional humidity regulation and removes airborne mold particles, which is particularly valuable in bathrooms or basements prone to dampness.

FOR BEGINNERS

Starting an indoor garden can feel intimidating, but certain plants forgive nearly every novice mistake. Succulents like jade plants and aloe vera require minimal watering and tolerate irregular care. The rubber plant grows readily with basic attention, while dracaenas come in numerous varieties, all tolerant of typical household conditions.

Success with indoor plants requires matching species to your specific environment and lifestyle. Assess your natural light levels honestly most plant failures stem from insufficient light rather than poor care. Consider your schedule: frequent travelers should choose drought-tolerant species, while retired individuals might enjoy more demanding tropical varieties.

Container selection matters too. Ensure pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot, and use quality potting soil rather than garden dirt. Most houseplants prefer to dry slightly between waterings as overwatering kills more plants than underwatering.

The transformation that indoor plants bring to living spaces is both immediate and cumulative. That first Boston fern or snake plant marks the beginning of a greener, healthier home with proof that sometimes the most sophisticated environmental solutions grow from the earth itself.

The Missing Piece Vintage and Antiques ENCHANTING TREASURES & EXCEPTIONAL DÉCOR

When early family ties help shape your own creative path, the results can be life changing!

Genna Gordon learned to love vintage treasures at an early age from her father. A skilled machinist who brought his family here from the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, her dad instilled in his daughter the “thrill of the hunt” by taking her to countless estate sales and auctions. Genna was always happy to accompany him and helped as her parents eventually opened a small vintage store on Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY.

Now a Charlotte resident, Genna was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021. When she took a medical leave from her longtime career in banking, she and her fiancé, Paul, explored their own shared interest in antiques, searching together at small auctions and estate sales, or setting up a booth (or two, or three) here and there, selling their unique vintage finds.

“While we sold from booths in lots of places, we were always searching for a more permanent spot,” shares Genna. “A realtor suggested we take a look at Denver, NC and, after a few visits, suddenly Denver felt like home! We made an offer on a space, closed in July of 2024 and opened The Missing Piece that September.”

Today, their charming boutique is filled with previously well-loved antique treasures and unique vintage décor – along with gourmet foods including sourdough bagels, lemon zest cookies and chocolate truffles that have become a must-have snack for locals.

“We’re a neighborhood store – and yes, we know our customers, and their families, by name,” adds Genna.

With 65 local vendors renting space, the inventory at The Missing Piece on any given day is eclectic and enchanting – from handmade stained glass to vintage tableware and glassware that may remind you of your grandparents’ homes. You’ll also find charming antique furniture pieces sure to find new life in your home!

There’s even a bridal nook – inspired by a friend whose daughter was getting married and struggling to find the perfect gown.

“This sparked the idea for our wedding booth,” Genna adds. “We carry a few really pretty gowns at amazing prices!”

Always on the lookout for interesting items and beautiful things, Genna says the majority of current inventory comes from the couple’s and their vendors’ personal travels. The Missing Piece is also excited to partner with local interior designers and staging professionals, who love their unique offerings when it’s time to create a one-of-a-kind set design.

While Genna continues her full-time banking career during the week, her stepson, Josh, and fiancé, Paul, keep The Missing Piece going strong. But, come Saturday, she’s there bright and early, assisted by her close friend – and popular vendor – Ann Duggan of Olde Post Vintage.

“We have truly built a ‘family’ here, between our loyal vendors and our wonderful customers,” Genna shares. “That’s the beauty of a local boutique. This community has been such a joy for me during my illness – I am actually still

excited to get to the store on Saturday and Sunday mornings, even after working long days during the week!”

Genna shares, without hesitation, that when she arrives at the boutique on Saturdays – and turns on the lights and the music for the day –she knows all is well in the world!

Come be part of The Missing Piece “family” and enjoy some serious vintage shopping at 5089 Slanting Bridge Road, Denver, NC, 704.858.0207. Follow them at themissingpiecevintage.com, on Facebook @themissingpieceantiques and on Instagram @The_missing_piece_antiques for new inventory offerings and ongoing inspiration. The Missing Piece is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

One Man’s Perspective AUSTRALIA

Awhile back, when we were working, we had time for a three-week vacation; we decided we would go to Australia and rent a camper and see as much of that very large, beautiful country as possible.  It was a little farfetched, but we thought we could pull it off.  We had to be back because our jobs needed us.

We found a company who would rent us a camper that we could pick up in Sydney, but we had to return it there as well. We made our reservation for the camper, airlines, and a hotel for when we arrived. All of this was done before Google and cell phones became popular.

We arrived as scheduled and checked into the hotel in Sydney, Australia. We had a room on the third floor, and they had an elevator. After we got settled, we were anxious to see Sydney. We got on the elevator and had a surprise. We were off the floor as the elevator fell three floors and bounced on the springs on the bottom.  After we recovered from the fall and pried the doors open, we went to the counter and told them of the incident. They kind of ho-hummed it so we decided to walk the stairs in the future.

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and is their chief port on the Pacific Ocean. We got to the top of the bridge over the harbor for a fantastic view, took a harbor cruise where you could get off the boat and board again later, and we got to see the famed Opera House. This was truly spectacular. The design came from an international competition to design an Opera House for that specific location. The curved design by a young Danish Architect was spectacular and still is.

It is now time to pick up our camper. It was very nice. It looked like it was almost new, a little longer than most vehicles and the top popped

up. You could stand up inside the vehicle when the top was up, and it had all the comforts of home. A nice bed, small closet, table, potty and an alcohol stove. Pretty neat. They told us that the middle of Australia was wild and that we would enjoy staying near the coast, so that was our plan. The beaches were beautiful and reminded us of the east coast of the States but with less people. In fact, Australia made us think of America fifty years earlier.

Australia started as a colony where the British brought their convicts. Gold was discovered in 1850, leading to the gold rush. In 1901 Australia became a nation. People refer to Australia as “down under” because she is in the southern hemisphere. In other words when it is cold

here in the states it is warm in Australia. We found all the people to be friendly and welcoming. They shared easily and so did we. Marianne had a lot of US coins, and all the kids loved them.

Our camper worked out beautifully. We got to see so much more than we would have otherwise. We visited many parks and saw animals we had only read about. The kangaroos and koalas were special. And the wombat, echidna, and many various types of birds all in their natural habitats were special. We also got to a Eucalyptus Forest which is indigenous to Australia. The tall trees were spectacular, and the smell was wonderful.

Our plan was to continue to the Great Barrier Reef and return to Sydney on a different route. But things were about to change. We read in the newspaper that there was going to be a gas strike in Sydney and there would not be any gas available. So, out with the maps and calculator figuring out where was the last place where we could get gas and still get the camper back to check in.

We made it with less than a gallon in the tank. Our plane was on time, and we made it to work as planned. It was a fantastic trip, and we gave God the credit for being with us and guiding us.

We loved our time in Australia and plan on returning when we have more time available.

Dear Dr. Keith,

I’m a 28-year-old man facing a few life decisions. The teachings I’ve received about effort and loyalty haven’t been helpful, leading me to question my choices and future. My parents were wonderful. They were encouraging, supportive and emphasized the importance of responsibility and accountability for our actions. We were rewarded for our good behavior and faced consequences for our mistakes. Overall, they did a great job preparing us for real life, which they always said (and I’m currently experiencing) is not fair. My current situations have left me confused, and I can feel a bit of depression creeping in. I know I have a few decisions to make, but avoidance has become my response. I feel paralyzed.

One of my primary concerns revolves around work, while the other is related to my relationship with my girlfriend. Let me begin with work. I currently work for a large corporation in sales, having graduated college shortly before. My original boss was exceptional. She was approachable, knowledgeable and an excellent mentor. I thoroughly enjoyed coming to work every day and quickly became one of the top salesmen in my territory. My manager encouraged me to keep working hard, and she helped me get promoted within the first year of my employment. However, things took a turn for the worse when I was assigned to my new and current boss. This manager is a complete disaster. He consistently cancels meetings with me or ignores me altogether. He’s assigned me the responsibility of leading all of our team meetings and constantly criticizes everyone on our team, despite the fact that we are among the top performers in the company. I often cover for his shortcomings and have been passed over for promotions for individuals who are less deserving and not as knowledgeable, simply because he refuses to allow me to move on. I believe he is afraid that his incompetence will become apparent if I leave. My frustration and stress are at an all-time high. My parents are encouraging me to persevere, emphasizing the importance of loyalty and the eventual rewards it brings. However, I am feeling increasingly tempted to quit. I urgently need your guidance on what to do.

My girlfriend and I have been together for three great years. However, she’s been persistently pressuring me to get married. She has a specific timeline in mind for her career, marriage and starting a family. Unfortunately, I’m not ready to make that commitment due to my uncertainties and concerns. Adding more pressure is causing resentment. Thoughts?

ASK DR. KEITH

Hey Jason,

I understand your parents’ perspective. We were taught that loyalty fosters loyalty, which was true for employees and corporations generations ago. That’s why many dedicated their entire working lives to one company. Unfortunately, that culture of loyalty has diminished, if not completely vanished, from most corporations. Employees are now seen as disposable and replaceable. This attitude can be detrimental to their success because it damages morale. However, most employers don’t care as long as it doesn’t affect their bottom line.

Fortunately, your first boss was fantastic. Use her as an example of what you aspire to be. A great manager is an excellent delegator and talent developer. They are confident in themselves and want their employees to succeed, grow and get promoted. Unfortunately, your current boss doesn’t embody these qualities. Sometimes, in large corporations, people end up in positions of power due to necessity, a lack of qualified candidates or timing. While they may appear qualified on paper, they may not be capable of thriving in their role unless they have a team that succeeds regardless of their flaws. Unfortunately, that sounds like your predicament. We create our own luck and opportunities by maintaining a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. Don’t let anyone diminish your worth, especially someone like him.

Wasted time and energy. You essentially have three choices: you can model the behavior you want changed, accept things as they are or leave. Just make sure you don’t quit before finding another job. You don’t want to create more stress by accumulating bills and having no source of income to pay them.

Additionally, you might want to speak with someone in human resources to see if there are any lateral transfer positions available within the company.

Regarding your girlfriend, it seems like an open and honest conversation would be beneficial. Relationships aren’t about sacrificing; they’re about negotiation and compromise. Ask her, “Does she want to get married or does she want to marry you?” Her answer will provide you with clarity. In your 20s, a man should focus on building a strong career and establishing a solid emotional and financial foundation for his future, so he can support a family. Similarly, a woman who chooses to work should do the same. Unfortunately, many young people fall in love and get married too early, before they’ve fully established themselves and built a strong foundation. This often leads to them being stuck in a job they hate, becoming resentful and eventually divorcing due to their struggles. Be strong. If she’s the one, she’ll wait until you’re ready.

Don’t miss this chance to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend in true Mooresville style, where community spirit meets Celtic tradition.

PLANNING YOUR 2026 CELEBRATION

The Tuesday timing of St. Patrick’s Day this year means many events will likely concentrate on the weekend of March 14-15, though traditional pubs and breweries will almost certainly maintain celebrations on the actual holiday. The events listed are all on March 14th, but if you plan carefully there will definitely be time for two of the three.

Lake Norman provides ample opportunities to embrace Irish heritage. The region’s ScotchIrish historical roots add authenticity to celebrations that honor both local history and broader Celtic traditions.

For the most current information about specific 2026 events, dates, times, and ticket requirements, you should consult individual venue social media pages, and the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce calendar as March approaches. Many popular events sell out in advance, making early planning essential for those hoping to fully experience Lake Norman’s St. Patrick’s Day traditions.

SPRING REFRESH, LAKE NORMAN STYLE

As the days grow longer and warmer, spring brings a natural sense of renewal to Lake Norman. It’s the season of opening windows, spending time outside, and making small changes that feel refreshing after the slower pace of winter. From simple home updates to everyday routines around town, spring is the perfect time to reset without overcomplicating things.

In Lake Norman, refreshing for spring often looks less like a full overhaul and more like thoughtful, easy changes rooted in the community. Whether you are refreshing your home, your style, or your daily routine, these local ideas make it easy to welcome the season at your own pace.

REFRESH YOUR SPACE, ONE SMALL CHANGE AT A TIME

A spring refresh at home does not have to mean a major project. Sometimes, the smallest updates make the biggest difference. Swapping heavier winter colors for lighter fabrics, rearranging furniture to let in more natural light, or adding fresh flowers can instantly make a space feel new.

Local stops like Ace Hardware or Lowe’s make it easy to tackle small weekend projects, while home boutiques such as Arhaus or

Pottery Barn offer inspiration for simple decor updates. Lake Norman favorites like Accent Prone & Modern Fabric in Huntersville and Home2Court in Cornelius provide stylish, locally loved furniture, fabrics, and home accents that make refreshing your space feel personal and intentional. Focusing on one area at a time and letting in fresh air can help your home feel lighter and more in tune with the season.

A SIMPLE STYLE RESET FOR SPRING

Spring is also a natural time to refresh your everyday style. Instead of starting from scratch, review what you already have and

add one or two pieces that feel seasonally appropriate. Lightweight layers, fresh colors, or new accessories can bring life to familiar outfits.

Lake Norman is home to so many walkable shopping areas, including Downtown Davidson, Cornelius, Mooresville, Lincolnton, Newton, and more. All great places to browse local boutiques and discover unique finds. Supporting local shops while updating your wardrobe and home keeps your style refreshing, thoughtful, and communityfocused, while still feeling fun and personal.

RESET YOUR ROUTINE AROUND LAKE NORMAN

Beyond home and style, spring invites a reset in daily routines. Longer days encourage more time outdoors, whether that means morning walks at Jetton Park, evening strolls at Lake Norman State Park, or quiet moments by the water.

A coffee run to Summit Coffee or Defined Coffee can become part of a refreshed routine, as can spending time at local parks or exploring seasonal events as they return. These simple habits create space to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the area as it comes to life for spring.

HOW TO CONQUER DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME WITH EASE

“Spring forward” we speak softly to ourselves to remind us of which way we’re headed when the clocks move an hour ahead. “Spring forward, spring forward.” Yes, that’s it! And, so it will be on Sunday, March 8th at 2:00 a.m. We may be losing an hour of sleep, but we will wake up to daylight! Goodbye cold, dark mornings!

As we know, there are some adjustments that need to be made whenever we spring forward or fall back.

But, just how long does it take for your body to adjust?

Our body’s time-keeping machine regulates sleep and metabolism. So, a time shift disrupts our sleep and circadian rhythms. It takes circadian and sleep rhythms a little while to transition. More specifically, the time change can affect sleeping and waking patterns for five to seven days. So, if possible, it’s a good idea to make some adjustments about one week in advance.

Here are a few tips:

START GETTING TO BED EARLIER

You can ease your body into the time change by starting your nighttime routine 15 minutes earlier in the days leading up to the start of daylight saving time. Then, if you really want to get a jump on the time change, turn your clocks forward Saturday morning instead of Sunday morning, and live your day based on that schedule. Allowing two days rather than a single day before the start of the week can help ease your circadian rhythm into the new time.

ENJOY THE LONGER EVENINGS

One great perk about spring and daylight saving time is that there is more sunlight in the evenings. Enjoy the natural lighting outside or indoors with your curtains open. Sunlight helps naturally reset your body clock. Letting natural light come into your bedroom in the morning helps you be more alert when you wake up.

STAY CONSISTENT

Wake up at the same time each morning to keep your sleep cycle more consistent, even

on weekends! Although sleeping in on your days off can help you feel more rested in the short term, it causes difficulties falling asleep and waking up during the week. In fact, getting out of bed at the same time every morning is the very best way to improve sleep and wake behaviors. A consistent sleep schedule based on a pre-determined rise time will help you feel more rested throughout the year. Getting up at the same time is far more important than going to bed at the same time, though consistency in bedtime is also important.

BE MINDFUL OF WHAT AND WHEN YOU EAT AND DRINK

Eating dinner earlier in the evening can help your body prepare for bedtime. Try to avoid spicy or fatty foods, especially as bedtime is approaching; they can lead to indigestion and insomnia. Avoid caffeine and alcohol later in the day, so you can fall asleep more easily.

EXERCISE

Being physically active can help you sleep better, too. Go for a walk or run outdoors during daylight where you are exposed to natural sunlight. It’s best to try to avoid working out too close to your bedtime. Allow at least two hours to “cool down” from exercise before going to bed.

THOUGHTS ON ELECTRONICS

Electronics’ high intensity light hinders melatonin, a hormone that triggers sleepiness. Light stimulates your brain and makes sleep difficult in the same way sunlight does. Also, it’s a good idea to turn off the television and pick up a book. Take a warm shower. Dim the lights. Let your body relax.

TIPS FOR HELPING SMALL CHILDREN ADJUST TO THE TIME CHANGE

With the clocks changing, it is going to be light in the evenings at many children’s

bedtimes. You may need to ensure your child’s room is plenty dark for their brains to get the message that it’s time for sleep. Blackout curtains can help with this, or if you need a cheap, quick fix, aluminum foil works wonders! Tape it up over the windows, and it completely blocks out all the light!

Most of us look forward to springtime but not so much to losing the hour of sleep when clocks move ahead. Spring kicks off daylight saving time, and clocks will be turned ahead one hour. Losing that one hour of sleep can affect productivity, concentration and both physical and mental health. Fortunately, using these simple tips, we can adjust to the time change more easily and even enjoy “springing ahead” and the extra daylight it brings.
