SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2025
"A Tradition of Excellence Since 1913"

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your active engagement and support of Forsyth Country Club. Your commitment sustains the vibrancy of our community and ensures that our club remains a treasured place for fellowship, recreation, and tradition.
Consistent with our commitment to governance transparency, we are pleased to share key topics from our Annual Board Retreat on August 28, 2025. This annual meeting provides your Board with the opportunity to reflect on our club’s long-term vision, review progress toward strategic goals, and ensure that we remain aligned with the values that define us.
One of our most important retreat discussions centered on club culture. Forsyth’s culture is the very foundation of who we are and how we experience our club together. In that regard, the Board has launched a Cultural Strategy & Implementation Plan with three (3) primary objectives:
• Education and Communication: Ensure that our culture is continuously shared and reinforced with both current and prospective members and employees;
• Consistency in Operations: Prioritizie decision-making across all operational areas that reflects our cultural values and goals; and
• Long-Term Preservation: Embed our culture into policies and practices that will endure for generations to come.
Guided by the principles of Excellence, Respect, and Tradition, the Plan provides intentional continuity that safeguards our refined and respectful atmosphere, while also encouraging innovation and vision. When values, behaviors, and norms are uniformly applied, it creates a predictable and reliable environment that promotes excellence and cohesion. These efforts will help ensure that we remain a place where tradition thrives alongside thoughtful progress.
Monitoring Member Access, Usage, and Capacity
Your Board also completed an in-depth analysis of member access and usage across all areas of the club, including dining, golf, racquet sports, aquatics, wellness, and special events. The Board is committed to ensuring that our members can actively enjoy the amenities and services they value most throughout the year.
As part of this review, we revisited the current membership cap of 745 (total of Resident and Senior member categories), previously established by the Board in October 2021. Currently, Forsyth has 731 members relative to our cap. Our evaluation included a careful look at the Club’s financial model and normal annual member attrition rates of 5–6%. After thoughtful analysis, the Board confirmed that the current cap continues to strike the right balance between member access and overall capacity. It also plays a vital role in sustaining our financial strength through a balanced combination of member dues income that funds our annual operational and capital budgets and new member initiation fees. Initiation fees have enabled the Club to aggressively decrease long-term debt and improve our Debt-to-Equity Ratio from 67% to 23% in just five (5) years.
The Board monitors access and usage data monthly to ensure that our membership experience remains positive and rewarding. In partnership with our leadership team, we are committed to offering a thoughtfully designed club-wide calendar that prioritizes opportunities for every member to enjoy our exceptional campus and amenities.
The Annual Retreat reaffirmed the Board’s dedication to preserving the traditions that define our club, while also embracing forward-thinking strategies that will enhance our future. We remain deeply grateful for the trust you place in us to guide the long-term health and success of Forsyth Country Club, and we are excited to build upon the durable foundation that generations of members have created.
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, thank you again for your loyalty, engagement, and support. Together, we will continue to honor our past, enrich the members’ experience, and secure our future.

Clifton, Club President

I want to provide you with an important update regarding the installation of our new chiller system.
Daikin, our equipment supplier, experienced an issue with the delivery of the unit, which has required us to adjust the installation schedule. The installation will now take place September 8–12. To minimize disruption, we have asked Daikin to schedule the crane lift of the new chiller over the pool after our normal morning swim programming is complete during that week, ensuring member safety while maintaining our daily routines. Portions of the parking area will also be blocked off during the installation period to accommodate equipment and staging, as outlined in our previous communications.
Daikin has accepted full responsibility for this delay and will cover any additional costs associated with the reschedule. While we regret the inconvenience, we are pleased with their commitment and responsiveness, which ensures that this project will still be completed to the highest standard without additional cost to the Club.
Once the new chiller is confirmed to be functioning as planned, the temporary unit will be removed from the property, restoring both the aesthetics and efficiency of our facilities. We are excited for this improvement, as it will provide reliable comfort for members and guests for many years to come.
We are grateful for your continued patience and understanding as we complete this important project, which reflects our ongoing commitment to the quality and reliability of our facilities.
You recently received a thoughtful update from Zachary Crum, Assistant General Manager, and Chef Lance Cook, Director of Culinary Operations, regarding our food and beverage operations. I would like to take this opportunity to reinforce that message: our entire team is committed to elevating attention to detail and service excellence across every dining outlet at Forsyth.
One way members can help us in this effort is by making dining reservations, particularly on busy evenings such as Fridays. Reservations play a critical role in helping our team plan effectively. They allow us to staff and prepare the dining rooms appropriately, ensure the kitchen can pace meal preparation efficiently, and ultimately provide a smoother, timelier, and more enjoyable experience for you and your guests.
We are deeply appreciative of the feedback we continue to receive from members, which helps guide our focus and improvements. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of our leadership team with questions, comments, or suggestions. Together, we will continue to build on Forsyth’s tradition of excellence in both hospitality and community.

- Doug Shifflett, CCM, CCE Chief Operating Officer

As the summer sun begins to set over Forsyth Country Club, we reflect on a truly fantastic season across our campus. This summer, the energy and excitement were unmatched—12 incredible weeks of camp, a thriving swim team season under first year Head Coach Doug Ford, and the alwaysexciting Pro-Am Tournament benefitting the FCC Employee Assistance Fund, made for a memorable summer for members of all ages. We are grateful to our members and staff who made this season one of the best.
While we celebrate our summer successes, we also look forward to the upcoming fall season, continuing our commitment to exceptional service, enhanced member satisfaction, and ongoing staff training. Our recent Q2 Member Satisfaction Scores reflect the positive strides we are making as a club, with a net promoter score of 63, we matched the overall satisfaction results of the 2023 GGA membership survey.
Through both July and August, we welcomed two new additions to our management team! We are thrilled to welcome new team members Gian Cortese, Assistant Catering & Events Manager, and Daniel Todd, Director of Food & Beverage, who bring energy and expertise to our management team. Please ensure they receive the heartfelt gracious welcome that has become synonymous with FCC. Additionally, please join us in congratulating Chelsey Mayer on her well-deserved promotion to Clubhouse Manager—her commitment to excellence continues to elevate the Forsyth experience.
Thank you for making this summer such a success. We look forward to an engaging and festive fall season together at Forsyth Country Club!

- Zachary Crum, CCM Assistant General Manager

Whata wonderful time of year it is at the Club. With fall in the air and the holiday season approaching, we have so much to celebrate and look forward to together. Last month marked my one-year anniversary with Forsyth Country Club, and I could not be prouder of our team and all that we have accomplished—nor more excited about what is to come.
Over the past year, we’ve worked to align our team members in the right areas, ensuring we provide you with the very best membership experiences possible. Creativity is flowing, new ideas are being put into action, and we are already looking ahead to our 2026 calendar to bring you fresh, elevated opportunities to enjoy the Club. We’ve also invested in redeveloping training initiatives and refining programs that directly impact your experience—whether through enhanced social gatherings, a revitalized Wine Club, or new traditions like our Ladies’ Sip and Social.
Looking ahead to October, two hallmark events will highlight the season. On Sunday, October 19th, our Annual Fall Festival returns—enhanced based on your feedback to deliver an even more festive, family-friendly celebration. Then on Thursday, October 30th, we’ll host our Halloween Party, now condensed into one exciting evening filled with costumes, contests, and activities throughout the Clubhouse and grounds.
As always, thank you for being the heart of Forsyth Country Club. We are proud to serve you and look forward to another year of memories made together.
-Tonya Williams, Director of Clubhouse Operations
I’m excited to share that I’ve recently transitioned from my role as Director of Dining Operations to Clubhouse Manager. It has been a true pleasure getting to know so many of you through our dining experiences over the years, and I’m incredibly thankful for the relationships we’ve built along the way.
In my new role, I’ll be focusing primarily on our banquet and private event operations, working closely with our talented team to ensure every event is executed with care, attention to detail, and the high level of service our members expect and deserve.

As part of this transition, we will introduce a new training initiative for our banquet staff, which includes a more concise and updated onboarding and reference packet, as well as hands-on service training. This will help ensure consistency, professionalism, and preparedness across all events, further enhancing the quality of our service.
This exciting new chapter in my career reflects the incredible support and investment our Club has made in my professional growth. I remain fully committed to enhancing your experience here at FCC and look forward to bringing even more memorable moments to life.
Thank you for your continued trust and engagement, it’s your enthusiasm and participation that make Forsyth Country Club so special. I’m honored to be part of a team and a culture that values leadership development and is committed to excellence in every aspect of club life.

Keep Moving or Risk Losing It: Why Senior Fitness Is Essential
As we age, staying active becomes not just a recommendation but a necessity. The phrase "If you stop moving, you’ll stop moving" rings especially true for seniors. Inactivity leads to a rapid decline in strength, flexibility, muscle tone, and balance — all crucial components for maintaining independence and quality of life.
Muscle Loss and Strength Decline
After age 50, adults can lose up to 1% of muscle mass per year if they don't engage in regular strength-building activities - and once lost, it’s much harder to regain.
Flexibility Fades with Inactivity
Stiff joints and tight muscles don’t just come with age, they come with inactivity. When you stop stretching and moving regularly, your range of motion narrows, making movements less fluid and more prone to pain.
Balance Is Built Through Movement
Good balance isn’t just about avoiding falls — it’s about confidence and control.
Movement Is Medicine
Movement improves circulation, supports joint health, and boosts mental well-being.
The Bottom Line
A sedentary lifestyle leads to a cycle of decline: the less you move, the harder it becomes to move. But the opposite is also true — the more you move, the better you’ll feel and function. It’s never too late to start. Keep moving, and you’ll keep living fully.
Join us at the Pavilion Fitness Center for Silver & Fit - specifically formulated for members aged 50 and over - as well as any of our other classes on the schedule such which include Bodypump, RPM, Core, Sculpt, Pilates, Bar, Yoga, and so many more.

With the fall season just around the corner, cooler temperatures are on the way! We have a great lineup of tournaments this year for all skill levels including the Men’s Bagpiper Member-Guest, the Ladies’ Member-Member, and the Men’s Senior Member-Guest, just to name a few. Below are the upcoming events that we have going on at Forsyth in the next couple of months. We hope to see everyone out on the course!
Ladies’ Weekender
The Ladies’ Weekender is a great event still in its infancy. 2025 will mark the 3rd year we have held this 1-day tournament. Taking place on Sunday, September 7th, it caters to all ladies at Forsyth. There will be a 1:00 pm shotgun for 18-holers, 9-holers will tee off around 3:00 pm. Teams of four, set by the Golf Shop, will compete in a Step-Aside Scramble. You will sign up individually for this event.

Some of the most fun you can have in 9-holes is during our LGA Evening Member-Guest on September 11th. There will be a 4:00 pm shotgun start for participants. The tournament will be played from Thursday, September 18th – Saturday, September 20th. The golf course will be closed on Thursday and Friday and will have limited access to non-tournament play on Saturday. Stay tuned for communications for exact times of golf course and practice facility availability.

Our LGA Ladies’ Member-Member will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd and Wednesday, September 24th. As one of the premier LGA events of the year, we are always excited for this event to come around. As summer winds down, the GCM team is in full tournament mode. It’s always a monumental effort to bring the course back to peak form after “blowing the place up” with aerification, but we rise to the challenge. The FCC Pro-Am arrives just six short weeks later and serves as the unofficial kickoff to the fall tournament season.
This time of year often delivers ideal weather, allowing us to produce the best playing conditions of the season. This year, we were honored to host the 61st North Carolina Open for the Carolinas PGA — a privilege to welcome the finest amateur and professional golfers from across the Carolinas.
You may have seen some new aerial images of the club recently. Captured by Ryan Montgomery, these photographs offer a breathtaking perspective of the course. I want to recognize the entire GCM staff — their dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence, especially following a challenging winter, is evident in every shot.
- Matt Jones, CGCS, Director of Agronomy
