Many children affected by child welfare often reflect back on instances of heartbreak, but that doesn’t have to define their story. With your help, 2023 has been our greatest year of impact yet, empowering at-risk children and families to create new redemptive memories. Here are a few real stories that your partnership helped make happen in 2023. Because of you, a young girl got the counseling she needed after a lifetime of trauma (see page 8). Because of you, foster families are finding church homes where they feel seen and loved (see page 10). Because of you, care communities can utilize technology to find and fulfill needs around them (see page 11). Because of you, parents who were separated from their children were reunited (see page 13). A NEW LIFE Most young adults don’t need to worry about fleeing from an abusive family, but sadly, Hailey did. Once she turned 18, Hailey legally separated from her family and escaped to a different state, where she changed her name and went into hiding in order to protect herself. Hailey wanted a fresh start and healthy relationships after so many years of abuse and pain. After enrolling in college courses, Hailey got in touch with our partner, Connections Homes, where she met her “mentoring mother,” Maria. Hailey and Maria were a perfect mentorship match. Along with emotional trauma, Hailey also suffers from two serious medical conditions and struggled to be fully understood by her new doctor. Maria, who worked as an ICU nurse for 41 years, used her medical background to advocate on Hailey’s behalf and help her get the treatment she desperately needed. Later, as Hailey underwent surgery, Maria became more than a mentor as she helped guide and support her through the entire process. While Hailey’s medical complications have led to isolation and affected her mental health, she says that having Maria there for her during this incredibly difficult time has meant the world. She no longer needs to face these challenges alone because her “mentoring mother” will always have her back.

When a pastor’s family in Collinsville, Illinois decided to foster, they had no idea how contagious their decision would be. Not only did this visible act of compassion affect the rest of their congregation, but it eventually impacted the entire city. The church’s new Family Advocacy Ministry, empowered through our partnership with Promise686, blessed every caseworker in their local child welfare office. In the coming year, they’ll offer trauma training for volunteers and provide wrap-around care for the foster families in their church. Today, the number of children who have entered their small local church because of foster care or adoption has grown to nearly one-fourth of those participating in Kids Ministry. As one new church member said, “We came here because we heard that you loved foster and adoptive families well.” This is a powerful testimony of how one family’s “yes” became the spark that ignited a thriving ministry that is making waves in their city.

RESCUE

This summer, a single mother overwhelmed with grief and in need of help requested an Uber gift card through our partner, CarePortal. Originally from Ghana, the mother’s husband left their family shortly after immigrating, leaving her with no job, no transportation, and no ability to get back home. A local church heard about the need and volunteered to purchase the card for her. But as they arrived, they realized the request for a gift card was just the beginning. Upon receiving the card, the mother instantly launched herself at one of the responders, weeping. Just six days prior, her 7-year-old son with autism tragically drowned in a nearby community pool. What seemed like a simple gift card request was actually a mother seeking transportation to grief counseling. After learning her story, the church surrounded this family with compassion and care. The church didn’t stop at the gift card but instead invited her to belong by continuing to meet her needs. They arranged ongoing transportation to grief counseling, as well as a meal and grocery plan. The youth group embraced her oldest son, even helping him get his driver’s permit. The church also supported both children’s journeys to overcome the trauma of water by sponsoring swim lessons.

When an at-risk child is removed from their family, every second counts. For Others, in partnership with Lifeline, works to speed up the reunification process through their highly-effective Families Count program. Families Count is a judge-appointed, state-approved class equipping parents with the opportunity to keep or regain custody of their children at an expedited rate without compromising the quality of care. This program aims to reduce the amount of time a child spends away from their family by up to 50%. Because of you and our partnership, Families Count was rolled out to 70 churches, resulting in 258 families completing the program so far. No one knows the effectiveness of this program better than Rick Hazelip and his church community in Pensacola, Florida. After three years of offering these classes, he’s seen them grow to max capacity, and the impact has been nothing short of astounding. A huge part of their success comes down to their volunteer mentors who form incredible, lasting friendships with participants. The parents come in looking for an expedited course but end up getting a lifelong community. Pastor Rick recalls how one mother’s child was kidnapped by a family member and taken across state lines, but mentors quickly stepped in to fund the legal fees and get her child back. “I’ve never had anyone fight for me like that,” the mother said. Many families who graduate from the class join the church, and some even return to become mentors, themselves. What could’ve been a memory of prolonged separation turned into a memory of restoration and reunification.

MEMORIES LAST FOREVER Some of the core memories many of us make as children come from our camp experiences: canoeing, midnight pizza, devotionals, campfires, and more. Yet many kids in foster care never get the chance to create these bonding memories. Thanks to your generosity, through our partners in Florida and Massachusetts, over 1,000 children and young adults in foster care received scholarships to take part in Christ-centered summer camps and Christmas retreats this year. It’s important to note that this isn’t foster camp but rather a fully-integrated model where participants engage in a youth group setting with peers. Another benefit of these camp experiences is the time and respite it affords caretakers and foster parents. While the child is away, the heroic foster parents get extra rest and renewal. For at-risk youth who come from a life filled with turmoil, a peaceful week of belonging is a precious and rare gift. Often, meaningful relationships with camp workers lead to important conversations. For many, their greatest camp memory becomes the moment when they come face-to-face with the life-changing power of the gospel.

In 2023, For Others joined forces with the Jockey Being Family Foundation on Chris Tomlin’s Stories of Worship tour. The tour covered 27 cities across the United States, allowing us to raise funding and spread awareness. Since Jockey passionately believes that every child deserves to grow up with a loving family in a forever home, this partnership was a natural fit. The Jockey Being Family Foundation allocates financial resources and support to assist organizations on the front lines of the adoption process for post-adoption support. For Debra Waller, CEO of Jockey, this cause is personal and deeply rooted since she, herself, was adopted. She and her family ensured that as they grew to become a global brand, they never veered away from doing all they can for kids in need.
