Welcome to our Autumn newsletter, We have been very touched by the wonderful support of our local community in response to a challenging start to the financial year and you can read all about some of the various activities which have been, and are, taking place for the work of the Hospice.

IN MEMORY OF JANE By Kevin Randall (Husband of Jane)
Jane and I met in January 1999, I was on my hands and knees looking at very rotten floor joists in a house Jane had purchased in Wareham. Suddenly standing over me was this lady in her very smart working clothes as she was the Chief Executive of Dorset Community Action (DCA) based in Dorchester. Unbeknown to us, this meeting was to be the start of an 18 year relationship that was to change both our lives. Jane was born in Kidderminster on 29th November 1947 and as young as 8 she had already begun to excel in anything she did including receiving several honours in ballet, achieving high school grades and later gaining a BSc (Hons) in physics at the Imperial College London. Jane’s employment began in 1969 when she began work at the science museum in London putting together Charles Babbage’s mathematical engine the first computer which is the size of a small kitchen in a modern house today, it can still be seen in the museum now. From there Jane went to work for the department of 4
education and science, then taking a career break incorporating having her daughter Abbie in 1985. In August 1986 Jane joined Dorset Community Action as Assistant Director and in 1997 became Director and Chief Executive until retiring in 2007. Her dedication to the voluntary sector was above and beyond that of a normal employee and this was recognised in the 2004 New Years Honours list when she was awarded an MBE the citation reading: For Services to the Community of Dorset. After retiring Jane became interested in Archaeology and embarked on a 6 year part time degree course at Bristol University. Jane was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer attached to a kidney in early March 2017. The surgeon said she would have 7 rounds of chemotherapy and if the tumour had shrunk enough, he would attempt to remove half the pancreas and a kidney. After 3 rounds of chemotherapy, another scan was performed and
it was discovered that the tumour had grown and splintered off to the liver. The chemotherapy had become ineffective and we were advised that palliative care was now the only available option. Within an hour of being told this in Sandbanks Ward, there was a knock on the door and Dr Beverley Lee from Forest Holme was sitting on the bed advising us of all of the possible options for the future. From then onwards the care was phenomenal. At first, Jane was an outpatient and the kindness and compassion shown at every visit was far more than we ever expected. Eventually Jane became an in-patient in need of the care that only somewhere such as Forest Holme can deliver. From the receptionists to the cleaners, volunteers, nurses and consultants, the care and support we received was absolutely amazing. Any time day or night, we only had to press the buzzer for anything from pain relief, to a drink or help to turn Jane. A cheerful smiling face would soon appear to help or talk to us about any issues we had. During the time Jane was in Forest Holme I got to meet other relatives and patients on the ward and in the garden. We would spend time chatting or having a cup of tea and we felt like we were part of an extended sort of family. Jane passed away peacefully on the
20th August 2017. Having gone through this experience I’ve decided to begin volunteering at Forest Holme because I want to give to other patients and relatives the care and compassion that was given to me by everyone at Forest Holme.

EVENT NEWS SUPPORTER CONFERENCE Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Supporter Conference at AFC Bournemouth's stadium. The afternoon included updates on the Charity's vision for the future, the variety of care provided by Forest Holme, fundraising and retail updates, our education programme, the Building on the Best programme and two very moving speeches by our supporters Roz and Marbellys. Thanks also go to Hays Travel Broadstone for supporting the event.
BOAT TRIP Our popular Wareham River Cruise took place in August. We had a great evening, with our guests enjoying fish and chips, top entertainment from Neil Hansler, and the fireworks over Poole Quay. Thank you to everyone who joined us– the event raised £2,455.

SUNFLOWER BALL We were delighted that 89 guests were able to join us for our Sunflower Ball at the Harbour Heights Hotel in September. Thanks to the kindness of our guests and those who provided our auction and raffle prizes, over ÂŁ5,000 was raised on the evening. GUNG-HO! August 2017 Congratulations to all those who took part in the Gung-Ho 5K obstacle race in support of Forest Holme Hospice. The runners tackled Europe's biggest inflatables and raised a combined total of ÂŁ9,880. We also had over 20 volunteers helping us on the day. The volunteers assisted runners, distributed merchandise, and cheered on the participants. A great day was had by all. Thank you to everyone who made it so memorable.

INDIAN MELA The Indian Mela offered the opportunity to experience the diverse tastes of India from a wide selection of food stalls. It also featured handicraft stalls, henna painting, and entertainment in the form of dancing and live music.
The Indian Mela was inaugurated by the Mayor of Poole and was kindly sponsored by Bupa, Nationwide and Owl Finance.
Hannah Parsons, Fundraising Manager for Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said: “The Dorset Indian Mela was a huge success last year and this year was even better. It was a great opportunity to try some fabulous food, all while raising money for Forest Holme Hospice.� 13
FUNDRAISING IN THE COMMUNITY LINDSAY CARE HOME The Lindsay care home summer fete was a huge success and raised over £800 for our work. Claudia, Home Manager at The Lindsay had an 8 gallon bucket of icy water thrown over her as the team exceeded their fundraising target of £500. Well done to Claudia and the team for organising a great event.
MEMORIAL CONCERT FOR MUM Back in July, James Shannon used his passion for music to raise vital funds for Forest Holme. James and his talented friends hosted a memorial concert in memory of his mum Tammi, who passed away in Forest Holme in June 2016. James said; “The genuine love and care shown by Forest Holme staff plus the excellent facilities are highly appreciated and make a world of difference in such tragic times.”
METAL DETECTING DIG Dorset & West Past Finders and the Dorset Relic Hunters took part in a joint metal detecting dig to raise funds for patient care at Forest Holme. Their generous donation of £2,585 will fund over 103 hours of nursing care on the ward. 14
10K SWIM Congratulations to Harry White and his 3 friends for completing the River Dart 10k swim in aid of Forest Holme Hospice. Harry said “This charity is special to me because it has recently started supporting someone very close to me and the service they have received in this challenging and confusing time has already made a difference to handling the uncertainty and upset of this terrible illness.”
CHARLIE & DANI SKYDIVE Fundraiser Charlie and her friend Dani faced their fear of heights in September by skydiving from a plane 13,000 ft in the air. The duo raised a combined total of £1,200.

FARMERS MARKET The team at Barclays organised a pop up Farmers Market to raise funds for Forest Holme. The fresh produce and homemade preserves raised an incredible £683 for local hospice care.
30 HOUR HIKE Congratulations to Kate Elson for completing the South Coast Challenge in memory of her Nan. Kate said “It was really hard and we are sore today but feeling accomplished. It took over 30 hours of hiking with only stops for food and first aid.”
SKY HIGH FOR BRYONY Well done to Bryony for skydiving at a height of 13,500ft in memory of her mum’s partner Tony, who received care at Forest Holme in 2016. Bryony said; “Forest Holme allowed my Mum to take a break from being his carer, enabling her to be his partner again. We laughed, cried, shouted and reminisced while we had the chance, safe in the knowledge that he was happy, content and comfortable.”
BIKE RIDE FOR NURSES On Tuesday 29th August, two Forest Holme nurses took part in a sponsored bike ride along Blackpool Seafront. Vanessa said: “Forest Holme not only supports people suffering from palliative diagnosis but who also provide support and assistance to those loved ones who also going through this heart-breaking ordeal.” 16
FOOTBALL KIT We were so thrilled to see the Forest Holme logo proudly displayed on the Corfe Castle FC kit.
SUMMER FETE Thank you to Ben Thacker for organising a Summer Fete at Brompton Court in aid of Forest Holme. Ben said “In 2003 you gave my mum, Sandra Irene Cobb, the utmost dignity and peace in her final hour's and this is my little way of giving you something back.”
TALBOT HEATH SCHOOL A group of retired staff from Talbot Heath School raised £550 for our work by hosting a lunch in memory of friends and colleagues who have benefitted as in-patients and out-patients at Forest Holme Hospice. 17 17
500 MILES FOR MUM We are so grateful to Maria Thomas-Luker for raising £1,000 for our charity by walking 500 miles in 4 months. Maria said; “In February 2017 we were told the devastating news that my mum had cancer and there was no treatment they could give her. Just 5 weeks after being told, she passed away. During those 5 weeks we received so much wonderful support from Joss at Forest Holme. My mum didn't like hospitals so her wish was to be at home. Joss offered support and advice to our family and assured us we were doing a great job looking after mum. Our world will never be the same. I wanted to do something to help raise money to enable Forest Holme to continue to offer their support.
FOOTBALL MATCH In July, Poole Borough Football Club took on the Poole Legends in a charity football game for Forest Holme Hospice Charity. The final score was 5-2 to Poole Borough FC. Thank you to both teams for taking part and raising money for the hospice. 18

SAND WALK A total of 990 pupils from Poole High School took part in a sponsored Sand Walk to raise funds and awareness of Forest Holme. The pupils were wonderful ambassadors for the school and it was great to talk to them about the work of the hospice. Special thanks goes to Mr Burkmar and Mr Jones for their hard work in organising this event.
SAINSBURY’S Our charity partnership with Sainsbury’s Pitwines has now come to an end after two wonderful years. Thank you so much to the team for their hard work, creativity and tireless support of the hospice. We are incredibly grateful for your fundraising efforts over the past 24 months. 19
LIGHT UP A LIFE - TREE OF REMEMBRANCE Each year at Christmas time, our Light up a Life appeal provides the local community with the opportunity to dedicate a star on our Tree of Remembrance. All donations made during this appeal will support patients and families in need of our care over the festive season. Simply visit the tree during December to add your dedication or complete the form on page 21. Once we receive your form, your loved one’s name will be handwritten onto a Light up a Life star and displayed on the tree. This year, we will have two tree locations:

1,000 MILES Matt House completed a 1,000 mile bike ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in support of Forest Holme and Macmillan Cancer Support. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement.
HEAD SHAVE On 7th October, Lisa Pierson will be shaving off her beautiful red locks to raise vital funds for local people battling cancer and other life limiting illnesses. Lisa said “I want to do this, to acknowledge how brave those people who have experienced cancer really are. Currently, a husband of a dear friend is going through treatment and Forest Holme are providing supportive care to the family, they are wonderful.”
DEAN’S GARDEN PARTY The lovely Joyce and Peter Dean opened their beautiful garden in Corfe Mullen once again this year to raise funds for Forest Holme. Despite the rainy weather, guests were able to enjoy the view of the garden and tuck in to tea and cakes. Thank you so much to Joyce, Peter, and all of the guests for supporting our charity. 24 24
SAHARA MARATHON In 2016, Nikki’s husband Richard passed away at Forest Holme following a battle with cancer. On the first anniversary of his passing, Nikki will fly out to the Moroccan Sahara to run 2 Marathons in just 2 days in his memory. Nikki said “The staff at Forest Holme were so amazing with him, nothing seemed to phase them and he wasn't the easiest of patients. I feel no amount of money I raise is a big enough thank you for the care he received at the end.”
100 MILE BIKE RIDE Congratulations to Simon Luty for completing the 100 mile Birmingham Velo last Sunday in support of Forest Holme. Simon said “Forest Holme cared for my Dad in his last days and he could not have received better care. Not only that but the support to my mum and the rest of the family was amazing, the nurses work in such challenging circumstances and always put the patient and their family first.”
JIMMY HOLLYWOOD CUP The Jimmy Hollywood Cup between Swanage Town & Herston Football Club and Corfe Castle FC raised a fantastic total of £1,557 for Forest Holme Hospice. A massive thank you to everyone involved. We heard it was a brilliant day. 25
CHOCOLATE NEEDED Every year we organise a chocolate tombola which raises significant funds for the Hospice. We wouldn't be able to do this without the kind donations of chocolate items from the local community. If you are able to donate a chocolate bar, box, tub, bag, or multi pack for us to use in the chocolate tombola this year, it would be greatly appreciated.
RECYCLING CARDS Thank you for recycling your birthday and celebration cards with our charity. Your unwanted cards have been transformed in to beautiful handmade designs by hospice cleaner Jackie. Jackie sold 400 cards over the past 12 months, generating ÂŁ400 for our charity. 26

FASHION SHOW October marks the 5th anniversary of the Secret Wardrobe. To celebrate this occasion, we would like to invite you to join us for a Fashion Show at Merley House in Wimborne on Friday 20th October. Tickets are ÂŁ8 per person and include a glass of bubbly. Please purchase your tickets in advance from the Secret Wardrobe or the fundraising office. There will also be a selection of stalls available selling Christmas gifts and handmade jewellery.

UTILITY ROOM REFURBISHMENT We were delighted to be awarded £3,222 worth of funding from The Screwfix Foundation, a charity which supports projects to fix, repair, maintain and improve properties and facilities for those in need. The funding was used to refurbish the patient services / utility room at the hospice. We’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraising – it’s made a great difference.

PARTNERSHIP WORKING Could you spare 2 hours a week to help? The British Red Cross’ Connecting Communities project is in need of volunteers to help reduce isolation and loneliness in the Poole area. Throughout Dorset, they know that lots of people experience feelings of loneliness and social isolation. This hidden issue is problematic because it affects people’s health and wellbeing. This brand new service will provide up to 12 weeks of person-centred support to someone experiencing loneliness or social isolation and help them connect to their community again. The focus will be on building a person’s confidence and sense of identity and purpose.

Support is tailored to a person’s specific needs, depending on the stage of loneliness or isolation. Both Forest Holme Hospice and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust benefit from existing British Red Cross initiatives and will no doubt also benefit from this new service in due course. EVENTS CALENDAR THE SECRET WARDROBE FASHION SHOW Friday 20th October 2017 - 6PM TILL 8PM To mark the 5th anniversary of our shop we will be hosting a fashion show at Merley House in Wimborne. LUAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE - Thursday 30th Nov Enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life Service. This year’s service will take place on the steps of the Civic Centre in Poole from 6.30pm. Following the service, sherry and mince pies will be served, courtesy of The Mayor of Poole. Please park in the multi-storey car park.
TREE OF REMEMBRANCE - Throughout December Visit our Tree of Remembrance at The Secret Wardrobe in the Dolphin Shopping Centre from the 1st - 22nd December and dedicate a star in memory of someone special. Alternatively, visit our second tree at Sainsbury’s Castlepoint from 1st - 20th December. Our stand will be open from 10.30am till 3.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
DANCE THROUGH THE DECADES - Sat 9th December Join us at the Hamworthy Club on Saturday 9th December for 'Dance through the Decades'. A DJ will play a selection of hits from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Tickets are £30 per person and include a two course festive meal, coffee and mints and two glasses of wine.
CHRISTMAS FAYRE - Wednesday 13th December We are holding a Christmas fayre on Wednesday 13th of December at the Corfe Castle Village Hall. We will have an array of stalls and if you’re looking for that something special, a unique gift or just stocking fillers come along, it’s sure to get everyone into the festive spirit!
