Welcome to the Summer edition of our magazine. As you will see in the newsletter, the last few months have been incredibly busy for our supporters and volunteers who have been raising awareness of, and vital funds for, Forest Holme Hospice across Poole, Wimborne and the Purbecks. We would like to thank you very much for your significant contribution and impact you have on the lifeenhancing work of the hospice. We are very privileged to have your support as part of the team. The Charity is very proud to introduce our one-off Sunflower Appeal in Dorset which will take place in Poole Park during September and we extend our gratitude to the Borough of Poole Council for helping us to make this happen. We hope that you will join us in celebrating the lives of those close to you at our Remembrance Service on Friday 2nd September in the Rose Garden at Poole Park or simply taking five minutes out in the peace of the garden for your own reflection.
As this newsletter goes to print, Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group is currently undertaking the public consultation phase of its Clinical Services Review for the county. Whatever decisions are reached, I’m sure the next few years will provide us with some great opportunities and no doubt some significant challenges for the equitable provision of palliative and end of life within our area. Our Board of Trustees has set out the Charity’s five year plan to support Forest Holme Hospice, as part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to become an exemplary provider of palliative and end of life care in Dorset. We passionately believe that collaborative working is integral to ensuring the very best of care for patients, and those close to them, whenever and wherever they need it. If you would like to see the Charity’s plans for the future, please visit our website or contact the office for a copy of our five year plan and feel free to feedback on any aspect of the document. Finally, I’d like to thank our supporter Marbellys Bayne very much for sharing her thoughts and experience around the national awareness campaign ‘Dying Matters Week’ which took place in May. Dying, death and bereavement are not easy subjects to discuss and we are eternally grateful to everyone of our supporters who share their own very personal stories with us in the
hope that it might help others who are going through, or have gone through, a similar experience.

JAKE’S EXPERIENCE OF FOREST HOLME In September 2014, 32 year old Shaun Dixon passed away at Forest Holme Hospice following a brave battle with Cancer. Shaun’s son Jake, with the help of his Grandma Nicky, has shared his experience of Forest Holme. “Hello my name is Jake, I am now 3 1/2 years old. My daddy Shaun became very poorly with cancer and had to go into Forest Holme quite a few times to help with his illness.
I would visit him when he was staying there and used to love going into the garden and watching the fish. I enjoyed playing with the toys (especially ‘pop up pirate’ with daddy) and running around the hospice. All of the nurses made it as happy a time as it could be. Sometimes they gave me sweets, or if I was tearful and unhappy they would talk to me and distract me with other things. I was never afraid to visit Forest Holme because I was always made to feel welcome. When daddy stayed at Forest Holme for the last time, my family decided that I shouldn’t visit him because daddy couldn't respond to me anymore and it was making me scared to be there with him.

I was very sad about this and my daddy slipped away peacefully on 25th September 2014. I didn't really understand what had happened but I knew he was no longer at Forest Holme. The following months were very hard for everybody. Mummy, Grandad John, Nannie Bridget, Grandad Gray, Grandma Nicky, Uncle Liam and Auntie Ronnie all helped me and explained that daddy had died and gone to the sky with the stars and angels. They said that although he was not here, he was always watching over me.
We talked a lot about daddy, we looked at photos and videos and even though everybody was sad, we all remembered the funny and happy times we had with him.
I still ask about my daddy a lot, especially when I am upset or tired. I also visit Forest Holme from time to time and I always remember daddy when we go there. I still like to look at the fish and play with the toys. I especially like to visit Hannah, Kathy and Kirsty as they give me cakes and biscuits!

A TRIBUTE TO GRANDAD FRANK By Oceanna Evans can understand, and dealing with it was an experience that I can only look back on with a hope that we can find a cure to cancer soon. “My Grandad touched the
hearts of everyone he met with his light-hearted approach to life and enviable ability to make you laugh your socks off. I never realised how much the loss of my grandad would affect me in the many ways that it has. It is such a strange sensation that cannot be explained, only that the loss of my grandad hit me hard, as it did with everyone who knew and loved him.

Forest Holme Hospice made the final step in my Grandad’s journey one that was comfortable, peaceful and respectful and for that, I, as is everyone that loved him, am truly grateful. We all have our own ways of dealing with loss, and my Auntie Karen has managed to do something productive and truly admirable with her grief by focusing on her passion 'running'.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Losing someone you love can be extremely sad and painful, and facing life after their death can be a struggle. You may experience all sorts of strong emotions or a numbness – this is natural. It takes time to heal, but support is at hand.

FOND FAREWELL TO NURSE DEBS We say a very warm farewell to Nurse Debs who retires from Forest Holme after 21 years of dedicated service. Debs has worked for Forest Holme since we opened our doors in 1994 and during this time, her role has been fully funded by your generous donations to our charity. Nurses like Debs not only provide practical support for patients by managing symptoms and providing pain relief, but they also provide emotional support and comfort when it is needed most. Your funding has enabled Debs to be there for patients and their families at the most difficult of times. Our charity would like to say a huge thank you to Debs for her hard work, dedication and commitment to Forest Holme we hope you enjoy your retirement! 8
We are still committed to funding a permanent replacement for Debs in Nurse Leanne’s post on the in-patient ward at the hospice. Leanne has extensive nursing experience within the local community and is a valuable addition to the team.
SAINSBURY’S TROLLEY DASH Thank you so much to everyone who purchased a ticket for our recent prize draw. You raised an incredible £2,176 for the hospice! The lucky winner was Christine Hockey from Poole who won a Trolley Dash at Sainsbury's Pitwines. Christine had 3 minutes to go wild in the aisles and went home with £300 worth of groceries, with the help from the Store Manager, Kev Strowger. Christine said; “Thank you for giving me such a wonderful treat, I just can’t explain the wonderful experience. I shall remember it forever and the goodies have given joy to so many. I still can’t believe my luck!” Kind-hearted Christine donated many of the items she collected in the Trolley Dash to friends, family and neighbours. She even gave the hospice and volunteers boxes of biscuits, chocolates and toiletries too! We would like to say a huge thank you to the team at Sainsbury’s for their generosity and ongoing support!

EVENT NEWS BINGO NIGHT Supporters turned out in force for our sell-out Bingo Night at Cobham Sports and Social Club! The event was attended by over 200 people who enjoyed an evening of dotting and dabbing, food and prizes. We raised a fantastic £1,508 thanks to sponsors Hays Travel Broadstone.
SMALL CHANGE, BIG DIFFERENCE We are overwhelmed by the support you have given to our ‘Small Change, Big Difference’ appeal. COMMUNITY SUPPORT You have been so busy over the past few months raising vital funds and awareness for Forest Holme Hospice. FREEMASONS AMPHIBIOUS LODGE The Freemason’s have delivered on their promise to fund the refurbishment of our Sunflower Suite by donating a further incredible £1,500 to our charity. GUNG HO FOR GRANDAD Earlier this year, fundraisers Sam, Sean, Mark and Martin took part in the Gung Ho obstacle challenge to raise money for Forest Holme. The 5k course contained ten of the greatest inflatable obstacles on the planet including Europe’s biggest inflatable slide! Huge congratulations to the team who managed to raise over £1,750 in tribute to Sam’s Grandad Geoff following his recent battle with lung cancer. KNITTED ANIMALS Talented Karen Hesketh spent months knitting these impressive safari animals for her daughter’s wedding. The animals were then sold to guests in exchange for a donation to Forest Holme!
JURASSIC COAST CYCLE On Saturday 14th May Rob Piper, along with his family and friends, took part in a Jurassic Coast cycle ride to raise funds for Forest Holme. Rob organised the event in memory of his Father-in-Law Derek who spent his final days at the hospice. The ride, which raised over £1,120, included visits to places that Derek enjoyed such as Sandbanks, Swanage, Corfe Castle and Lulworth. We would like to say a huge thank you to Rob and his family for their wonderful support!

COMMUNITY SUPPORT CORFE CASTLE PRIMARY SCHOOL Alice, George, Scarlet, Imogen, Elliott and Beau from Corfe Castle CE Primary School raised a total of £85.50 by organising a fundraising cake sale in memory of Alice and George's mum, Sarah Hamilton-Fletcher.
THE SCANNERS The Scanners took to the stage at The New Inn, Poole to raise funds for Forest Holme. This newly formed Rock ‘n’ Roll covers band, made up of staff from Poole Hospital Trust, managed to raise an impressive £338 for our work. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and a special thanks must go to the staff at the New Inn for their generous donation of £150.
QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY Thank you to Hazel and friends who hosted a fabulous Queen's Birthday Celebration Tea at Merley House. Luckily the sun shone for the guests and with their fantastic cakes and games they raised a fantastic £538.17 towards the work of Forest Holme!

GRAND TRI RUN 10K On May 22, Mark Newbury took part in the Grand Tri Run 10k in memory of his Grandfather who recently passed away after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Mark said; “In his final days, he was looked after by the amazing people at Forest Holme Hospice. Here he received the best possible care making him comfortable and giving him the rest which he so desperately needed and deserved.”
HALF MARATHON FOR MUM Congratulations to Keziah who braved the blistering temperatures to take on the Hackney Half Marathon in support of Forest Holme. Keziah managed to raise over £700 in memory of her mum who spent her final days on the inpatient ward at the hospice. Well done on a fantastic achievement! CARER’S AND CAKE On Wednesday 8th June, Lizzie Adams from Poole Hospital organised a carers information day at Forest Holme. The event, which was open to all carers, included talks on end of life planning, legal and financial matters and caring for the carer. 17
CORPORATE SUPPORT A SLICE OF HAPPINESS International Nurses’ Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, marking the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. To make the day extra special for the wonderful nurses at Forest Holme, generous staff at Papa John’s Poole surprised them by delivering freshly made pizza . Vince Babbra, owner of Papa John’s said “Nurses’ Day is a chance to celebrate the remarkable difference nursing staff make every day. We wanted to offer a slice of thanks to nurses at Forest Holme for all of the wonderful work they do.”
FITNESS FIRST The Fitness First Head Office in Poole went all out for our Wear Yellow Day in June. In addition to wearing yellow they also held a charity raffle, sold yellow cakes and snacks, had a pop-up nail salon offering yellow nail painting, and organised a hula hooping and a limbo contest for staff. It looks like the team had an amazing day and managed to raise £364.40 in the process. Thank you Fitness First!
LORRAINE COOPER & SANDFORD HOLIDAY PARK Huge thanks to Lorraine Cooper and her family for organising a fundraising day in memory of Chalky White. The family raised an incredible £1,500 in tribute to a much loved husband, dad and granddad. Pictured: Lorraine Cooper and her nephew Ben.
Our second thank you goes to Sandford Holiday Park (Lorraine’s place of work) for taking part in our wear yellow day and raising an additional £313.23. The money raised will make a huge difference to the lives of future patients and their families receiving care from Forest Holme Hospice.
B&Q FLEETSBRIDGE Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers who gave up their sunny weekend in June to take part in a bucket collection for our charity. The team were located at B&Q in Fleetsbridge and managed to raise a fantastic £641.54 for Forest Holme. Thank you to the customers and staff at B&Q for their generosity! 19
SUNFLOWER APPEAL A moment of reflection and a time to remember a loved one Throughout the year there are times when we wish to remember those who are special to us. The Forest Holme Sunflower Appeal is a unique opportunity to remember and celebrate the life of someone important to you. This September, thanks to the Borough of Poole Council, the Rose Garden in Poole Park will be transformed with a sea of handcrafted sunflowers. There will be a beautiful display of 1,000 flowers which represent the 1,000 local people we care for each year.

The sunflowers will be on display throughout September, during which time you are welcome to visit and remember your loved one. Forest Home will also be holding a Remembrance Service at the Rose Garden on Friday 2nd September at 2pm till 3pm. The service will be led by Rev. Fraser Smith and will give you the opportunity to reflect and hear some poetic readings. AMBERWOOD HOUSE SPONSORED WALK The residents, relatives and event team at Amberwood House in Ferndown raised £381 through their sponsored walk in aid of Forest Holme. The seaside themed walk began at Baiter Park in Poole and followed a scenic route along Poole Quay. Activities Organiser Jan Burns praised the generosity of the public in Poole, adding: “Forest Holme is our main charity this year and people we met on the walk were only too happy to contribute. It was a fun outing. Everyone got to the end and afterwards we all enjoyed a well-earned picnic lunch and ice cream.” Amberwood House Home Manager Neil Dominy said: “Forest Holme does amazing work in the community and our residents and team members are keen to help as much as they can.” Thank you Amberwood House for your wonderful support!

EYE FOR DESIGN Since opening the shop in 2012, we have been very lucky to have the help of Viv Taylor, a creative and talented window dresser who worked at Beales Department Store. Since retiring from Beales, Viv gives up her time to work alongside our Shop Manager and volunteers to create beautiful window and mannequin displays at The Secret Wardrobe. Déjà Vu UPCYCLING Huge thanks to our friends at Déjà Vu Upcycling for raising £763.49 for Forest Holme in less than six months. Eloise and Jan decided to raise funds in memory of Mike Flinter - a beloved Husband, Dad, Grandfather and friend to many. Mike’s legacy will help future patients living with a lifelimiting illness and will enable us to support families during the most difficult time of their lives. AIKIDO MARATHON FOR DAD Brothers Vince, Mark and Lee Lawrence have organised a 12 hour Aikido Marathon to raise funds for Forest Holme following a decision by their Father to spend his final days at the hospice.

Wing Walk – 4th Sept 2016 You can finally realise your dream of becoming a wing walker while raising money for Forest Holme Hospice Charity with Aerobatic Tactics, the only company in the UK approved to offer wing walking. Once strapped into the 5 point harness, you will take off from Compton Abbas Airfield for a 10 minute ultimate experience that will include zooms and climbs at speeds up to 130mph.

Bournemouth Marathon - Oct 2016 The Bournemouth Marathon Festival brings many distances together in one unique festival of running. The courses are fast and picturesque, making it a must-do for anyone looking to set a PB.

SKYDIVE FOR FOREST HOLME In celebration of their 50th birthdays, Claire, one of our Community Health Care Assistants and her two friends, Mandy and Kim, undertook the challenge of a lifetime by skydiving from 15,000ft! Claire said “Those who know me well will understand what a real challenge this was for me. I am petrified of heights and this was one of the biggest challenges of my life. That's why I chose a really worthwhile charity to give me a reason to make that jump!” Thank you ladies for raising £1,000 for our work!

COMIC RELIEF Forest Holme take a holistic approach to reducing symptoms and the side effects of conventional cancer treatment plans by providing free weekly yoga sessions to patients. Research has shown that yoga can improve fitness, lower levels of stress and increase feelings of relaxation and well-being. This year these sessions are kindly being funded a Comic Relief Local Communities Grant, while the use of the room is generously donated by Tapper Funeral Directors.
DYING MATTERS AWARENESS National Dying Matters Awareness week aims to help people to talk about, and understand more about, death, dying and bereavement. We appreciate that this is never an easy subject, but we are indebted to our supporter Marbellys Bayne for allowing us to share her emotions about the death of her husband Michael, in January, and living with her own diagnosis of cancer through her very powerful online blog. https://marbellysb.com/
DYING MATTERS BY MARBELLYS BAYNE Monday 9 May marked the start of Dying Matters Awareness Week during which time we are encouraged to talk about death and dying, not in a morbid but in a constructive way.
Thank you very much Marbellys for allowing us to share both your and Michael’s story in order to help others who are living with cancer or struggling to come to terms with the death of a loved one.
It’s good to share your thoughts and feelings with others be that face-to-face, online or in writing and it’s also very important for people to take time to listen when someone does.

After my husband died I found a folder with neat writing on it which read “FUNERAL” and I thought “great, he has left it all organised, nothing to worry about!” Little did I know it was just a smoke screen; on opening the said folder I found:
1. A newspaper cutting of an article decrying the extortionate costs of funerals 2. The name of two hymns written on the back of an envelope, and 3. An email, dated exactly one year before his death, confirming that our priest of 12 years would be happy to conduct “the funeral” And that was it! I knew, from his will, he wished his body to be cremated. Other than that nothing, zilch, niente, nada. You see, my husband did not speak of his imminent death, even though we had known for more than a year that the cancer no longer responded to treatment. He did not allow the conversation to take place. It was too much for him. I can only speculate his reasons, he never said why.
those conversations means that at times I feel rudderless specially when trying to guide our children through life. I often attempted to ask him how he would have wanted me to, for example, advise our children on relationships, money, buying their first car, etc. only for the subject to swiftly switch to football or rugby or whatever other sporting event was his latest preoccupation. For our children the silence now means a lot of questions which will remain unanswered, this makes their and my grieving so much more difficult. I am always mindful of honouring his memory and constantly looking for opportunities to put together a legacy to give to our children to hold on to. I am only hoping that it is just what he would have wanted. So if there’s one thing I wish for you readers, is that you make time to talk with your nearest and dearest about dying matters, if not to ensure that your wishes are carried out and respected, then to save your loved ones the anguish of second-guessing what your wishes are.
This silence meant for us a prolonged suffering, a wanting to speak up but never feeling that we were allowed to. Not having 35

We have 80 active volunteers who help us to ensure, among many things; The Secret Wardrobe provides a magical shopping experience, our garden looks fabulous throughout the year, our monthly pop in group has a listening ear, our fundraising events always run smoothly and our ward is provided with refreshments and beautiful flowers.

FIRE WALK - THURSDAY 13th OCTOBER 2016 Venue: Cobham Sports and Social Club Everyone needs thrill and adventure, so fire up your determination and inner strength and join Forest Holme to walk across hot coals! You will receive an hour of self-development training from the world renowned Scott Bell, to help you step away from your comfort zone and learn how to utilise your focus and potential. Your determination will then take you to where you want to go, in this case, to walk across fire! Challenge yourself to face your fears this October while supporting families facing the most difficult time of their lives. Registration is £25 per person and we ask for a commitment to raising £100 in sponsorship. Places are limited so please sign up ASAP to secure your place! Spectators welcome.
