Welcome to the Spring edition of our magazine. We have been overwhelmed by your kindness and support during the last twelve months and I am thrilled to announce that you have helped to raise a tremendous £700,000 towards the life-enhancing work of the Hospice. You will read later in the magazine where your fundraising efforts will be spent during the next twelve months and this is the start of the Charity’s ambitious five year plan to help improve the provision of palliative and end of life care within a variety of settings. In 2015 the National Palliative and End of Life Care Partnership launched their framework to help improve the provision of Palliative and End of Life Care at a local level. The Charity is very keen to help advocate the ambitions of this framework and support Forest Holme Hospice, part of Poole 2
You will no doubt have been aware of the variety of damning incidents which have taken place within the charity sector in the last twelve months. As a result of this, there will be changes in the way fundraising is regulated. One area is that of the new Fundraising Preference Service which individuals may have to ‘opt-in’ to register that they are happy to be contacted by charities about their fundraising initiatives. There is currently a lot of debate around the practicalities of implementing this, but we would like you to be aware that we may have to approach you in future for your consent to allow us to continue to contact you and we would really appreciate your co-operation with this when the time comes. As a member of the Fundraising Standards Board, we are passionate about ensuring that any money given to the Charity is spent in the most efficient, cost-effective and transparent way possible.

A TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL BAYNE 31/12/1959 - 15/01/2016
Michael loved running, Tangle Foot beer and AFC Bournemouth, as well as walking in the Dorset countryside.
“On 15 January at 22:55 my amazing and courageous husband died. I have lost my soulmate, my best companion and friend. My children have lost the best father.
Michael was a very good man, who lived life to the full and loved to make people smile. He would have wanted to be remembered not with sadness, but as the happy man he was.

Michael always managed to light up a room and, ever the entertainer, would always tell a story about life. He was full of enthusiasm, a true character, one of a kind.
Michael was looked after by the doctors, nurses and staff at Forest Holme Hospice, during the most difficult days of his life, with kindness and compassion. They made our children, Andrea, Luca and Juliet feel welcomed. They supported us every day we spent at the hospice without question or hesitation. Your donations will help the hospice to continue to provide their extraordinary care to other families at a time when they're going through traumatic circumstances and witnessing their loved ones going through chronic or terminal illness.�

ENHANCING LIVES
The Trustees of Forest Holme Hospice Charity have been meeting recently to look at the years ahead and to try and plan as best the organisation can for them. For the past 22 years, the Charity has financially supported Forest Holme Hospice, part of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to provide excellent care across Poole, Wimborne and the Purbecks. It is from this solid foundation that we have plans to grow. The Board are acutely aware of the multitude of challenges facing palliative and end of life care and know that the delivery of these life-enhancing services will not become any easier in the future. The Charity cannot, and must not, work alone to address this challenge. We will work hard at developing relationships with many other organisations within the county to ensure that the people of Dorset have access to excellent palliative and end of life care and, where appropriate, support and encourage new ways of delivering this life-enhancing care and support. Forest Holme Hospice Charity is very priviledged to have a wonderful network of supporters who are integral to the future of Forest Holme Hospice and its services and we look forward to working with you to strive for the delivery of world class palliative and end of life care in the years ahead. 5
LONDON MARATHON WELL DONE JOE!
Congratulations to our amazing runner, Joe Burkmar, who ran the London Marathon in support of our work. Joe completed the gruelling course in a very respectable time and raised an incredible £3,988 in memory of his mum, Mandie. Here is what Joe had to say about his motivation for the event; “I drew inspiration from my Mum's long and brave fight with cancer. She always had a smile, enjoyed every day and never gave up hope. In December 2011, we said goodbye to Mum. Cancer sadly won the battle. 6
Forest Holme provided a sanctuary of care and support. Not only for my Mum, but for our family. In our time of great need, the wonderful work they do made this incredibly difficult time, that little bit easier. It was an honour to run the Marathon to raise money for a charity that is so close to my heart.” Thank you so much Joe!
HELENA’SRUN IN MEMORY OF MUM Following only six weeks of training, Helena Darragh tackled the mighty Edinburgh Half Marathon in support of Forest Holme Hospice Charity. Helena completed the run in a speedy 1 hour 38 minutes, raising over £550 in the process. EVENT NEWS QUIZ NIGHT - 11TH MARCH 2016 Another brilliant evening! Thank you to everyone who attended our Quiz Night at Cobham Sports & Social Club. We are delighted that the evening raised £1,071. Thanks again to Ashley for hosting the evening and all of our lovely volunteers for their assistance. The winning team were ‘The Tortoise Fanciers’ who happen to be the fabulous Generalist Nurses and their partners. We look forward to the next Quiz Night on the 28th October 2016.

£1 FIT CLUB RAISES £310 FOR FOREST HOLME Thank you to Jocelyn Braidy and the members of her £1 Fit Club in Wimborne for raising £310.46 for our work! Jocelyn said; “I wanted to give something back for all the amazing support and help they gave both my dad, my mum and I through the last days of my dad’s life. My dad didn’t particularly want to go into a hospice but the nurses made us feel so at ease and comfortable during a time of such sadness.”

HASKINS GARDEN CENTRE CHARITY PARTNERSHIP 2015/2016 We have had great fun working with Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown during our yearlong charity partnership. The hardworking team organised a calendar of fundraising events including a children’s Halloween evening, adult shopping experience and Land Girls performance. In April, we were presented with a cheque for an incredible £4,622 which has been raised as a result of the hard work of staff and the generosity of their loyal customers. This money will make a huge difference to the lives of local people living with a life limiting or terminal illness. Thank you so much Haskins!

ESSENTIAL NURSING The lovely team at Essential Nursing have set themselves an ambitious target of raising £3,000 for Forest Holme throughout 2016. Their fundraising is off to a great start thanks to Company Director Rose, who has been selling her fresh chicken eggs in exchange for charitable donations. COMMUNITY SUPPORT ANNIVERSARY OF ROCK On Saturday 27th February, The Lord Nelson Pub on Poole Quay hosted ‘TheAnniversaryofRock’ in memory of Donna Turner. With live music from a huge range of talented musicians, all ticket proceeds were kindly donated to Forest Holme, as well as the proceeds from the raffle and a sponsored head shave! The event raised an unbelievable £4,009.84 for our hospice which will enable us to fund over 200 hours of specialist care for local people living with a life limiting or terminal illness. Thank you so much to everyone who made this event possible!
THANK YOU RUNTON ROAD! Viv and Mick of Runton Road have been fantastic supporters of Forest Holme over the past few years. Despite a disheartening start to their display due to a collection tin robbery, we are delighted to announce that they raised in excess of £4,780 for Forest Holme. HADRIAN’SWALLCHARITYWALK Colin Breeze and Ronald Nightingall walked the Hadrian’s Wall Path to raise money in memory of Colin’s wife, Rosalyn, who passed away on 13th July 2014. The pair completed the 85 mile walk over 8 days and raised £667 for Forest Holme. Thank you!
PARKSTONEEVENINGTOWNSWOMEN’SGUILD We were invited to join the Guild for their AGM on March 10 to promote our shop, The Secret Wardrobe, with a fashion show. The evening raised over £100 for our work and we’d like to thank all the ladies for their participation and support on the night.
BROADSTONE SUPPER CLUB On April 19, the Broadstone Supper Club celebrated their 20th Anniversary. Congratulations on reaching this milestone year and thank you so much for all you do for the local community including your recent support of Forest Holme Hospice!

COMMUNITY SUPPORT HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADA We shouldn’t have favourites but must give a special mention to one of our most dedicated fundraisers, Ada Newman. Ada, who turned 94 this year, has been supporting Forest Holme for over 13 years and has raised an incredible £6,006 for our work. Ada organises regular raffles at her retirement home, collects her loose change and has even skydived from a height of 13,500ft all in the name of charity! Most recently, Ada asked for donations to Forest Holme in lieu of presents at her 94th Birthday party.
WAREHAM GOLF CLUB We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dusty, Eva, Jon and the members of Wareham Golf Club for their wonderful donation of £4,481 which was raised throughout 2015. Our in-patient ward has seen a 35% increase in admissions over the past 12 months and this donation will help us to fund additional ward staff to meet this greater need and ensure continued levels of excellent care at Forest Holme. FREEMASONS AMPHIBIOUS LODGE 9050 The Freemasons are often undervalued for the positive work they do for our local community. In April, the Amphibious Chapter 9050 visited the hospice to present us with a cheque for £500. This valuable contribution will enable us to start a renovation project at Forest Holme. The plan is to convert a room into ‘The Sunflower Suite’ with the aim of providing a peaceful and private space for family members to say their final goodbye to their loved ones and begin their grieving process. The Amphibious Chapter have committed to fully supporting this project throughout 2016.
COURTHILL INFANT SCHOOL Zoe Williams, Office Manager at Courthill Infant School has been busy baking delicious cakes for a staff cake sale in support of Forest Holme.

500 MILES FOR FOREST HOLME Running enthusiast, David Smith, is undertaking a massive feat of endurance by running a total of 500 miles in 21 days for Forest Holme Hospice and Children’s Hospice Association Scotland. David said; “I know that I can do it and nothing but a serious injury could stop me from reaching Glasgow on April 30. THE SECRET WARDROBE The Secret Wardrobe is our vintage boutique found on the first floor of the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Poole. Do come in and say hello, we are open Monday to Saturday 9.30 AM to 5 PM. We are now approaching our fourth year of trading and would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has made the shop so successful over the years, especially the 25 hardworking volunteers, without whom the shop would simply not be able to trade. We are also indebted to the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Big Yellow Storage (BYS) and Poole Bay Removals, who collect our donations from the BYS on a regular basis with great commitment and enthusiasm. Spring / Summer fashions Currently the shop is in spring and summer season and our rails are displayed in colours, so that you can choose an outfit and mix-and -match different colours. Soon we will be moving into red, white and blue colours to celebrate the Queen's birthday, alongside a nautical theme, most apt for Poole! The Secret Cellar This is an area at the rear of the shop where we are promoting and displaying our Summer Prom and cruising wear; such as ball gowns, tuxedos and men's dress-shirts. There is also a Bridal Department which stocks a good range of both modern and vintage wedding dresses. Toad Hall Country Vintage We have a vintage/designer unit at Toad Hall in Wimborne, where we showcase our vintage range and various designer label clothes. Our unit is one amongst 50 traders showcasing a lovely collection of vintage, retro, antique and country goods. Pop over and visit our unit, which is on the second floor and is called "The Secret Something". There is also a lovely tea rooms downstairs, so you can make a day of it! Déjà vu Upcycling Don’t forget to visit Eloise and Jan at Déjà vu Upcycling during your visit to the Dolphin Shopping Centre. This creative duo have raised over £626 for Forest Holme Hospice via their shop, in memory of Michael Flinter. 29
SOCIAL GROUPS PHOENIX DORSET Thank you to Phoenix Dorset for their recent fundraising in support of our charity. Phoenix Dorset is a well-established singles social group with a membership of over 110 people. They hold a wide range of activities organised by the members themselves, many of which are regular events. POP-IN AT THE HOLIDAY INN Pop-In is our monthly bereavement support group available to all those who have recently lost a loved one at Forest Holme.

On the first Monday of every month, except Bank Holidays, the group meet at the Holiday Inn Express in Poole between 2pm and 4pm, where they can have a friendly chat over a slice of cake and cup of tea. We would like to thank the Holiday Inn for their continued support.

Wing Walk – 4th Sept 2016 You can finally realise your dream of becoming a wing walker while raising money for Forest Holme Hospice Charity with Aerobatic Tactics, the only company in the UK approved to offer wing walking. Once strapped into the 5 point harness, you will take off from Compton Abbas Airfield for a 10 minute ultimate experience that will include zooms and climbs at speeds up to 130mph.

Bournemouth Marathon - Oct 2016 The Bournemouth Marathon Festival brings many distances together in one unique festival of running. The courses are fast and picturesque, making it a must-do for anyone looking to set a PB.

What will our charity be funding this year? During this financial year, we need to raise ÂŁ750,000 to support the life enhancing work of Forest Holme Hospice. Our funding will be distributed to the following areas;
Counselling and bereavement support for patients and their family and friends.
Increased Healthcare Assistant hours to support the in-patient ward during the evening and over night.
Registration fee: A full time receptionist to provide patients and families with a warm welcome as they visit the hospice.
Investment into Palliative Care education throughout Dorset to ensure that local people with a life limiting illness are receiving the best care possible. 32
A staff nurse, a specialist development nurse and a therapies assistant for Forest Holme Hospice.
Yoga, massage, aromatherapy and other complementary therapies for cancer patients within Forest Holme and Poole Hospital. Homely amenities for patients such as toiletries, newspapers and games.
Furniture, fittings and equipment for the ward to make patients and their relatives as comfortable as possible during their stay at the hospice.

EVENTS CALENDAR REMEMBRANCE SERVICE - SUNDAY 15TH MAY A joint Remembrance and Thanksgiving Service and Dedication of the Book of Remembrance will be held at the Priory Church, Christchurch in partnership with Macmillan Caring Locally and the Youth Cancer Trust. The event will take place on Sunday May 15, 2016 featuring La Nova Singers. SUNFLOWER BALL - FRIDAY 3RD JUNE This year’s Sunflower Ball will take place on Friday 3rd June at the Haven Hotel in Sandbanks. Tickets are £65 per person or £600 for a table of 10. Hurry, only one table remaining!
TIE A YELLOW RIBBON -THURSDAY 16TH JUNE Remember a loved one by tying a yellow ribbon in our hospice garden between 2pm and 4pm on Thursday 16th June. If you are unable to attend and would like a member of our team to write and tie a ribbon on your behalf, please complete the dedication form on page 23. 38
WEAR YELLOW DAY - FRIDAY 17TH JUNE After the success of last year’s wear yellow day, we will once again be encouraging our supporters to wear yellow for hospice awareness on Friday June 17. Don’t forget to share your photos on our Facebook page! Sunflower badges and headbands are available to purchase from the fundraising office.
VINTAGE AFTERNOON TEA - SUNDAY 26TH JUNE Organised by supporters of Forest Holme Hospice Charity. Join Dot and Georgie at Morden Village Hall in Wareham from 2.30pm for an afternoon of chatting over a scrumptious selection of tea, cakes, scones, jam and clotted cream. Tickets are £7.50 per person and are available from the fundraising office.
WAREHAM RIVER CRUISE - THURSDAY 25TH AUGUST Join us for our ever-popular Wareham River Cruise on Thursday 25th August. Tickets are £24 per person and include entertainment, fish and chips and a chance to see the fireworks at Poole Quay. Tickets for the Wareham River Cruise sell out well in advance - please call the fundraising office on 01202 670644 to book your tickets. Reserved ticket balances must be paid by the 30th June 2016. 39
