Dear Friends Welcome to our Winter newsletter. As you will see in the newsletter, we are thrilled to receive the support of our local community, who have been volunteering and fundraising for the charity’s work in a variety of ways during the Festive Season. And this is just a snapshot of what has been happening over the last couple of months!
Macmillan Unit and Macmillan Caring Locally in order to look at the best way of working together to benefit patients and their families across the east of Dorset. We will also form part of a steering group which will work with Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, both statutory and voluntary health and social care organisations in order to help improve End of Life Care provision across the whole county.

In memory of Rebecca Buckell Rebecca Buckell was born in Bournemouth and was a glamorous career woman who loved working in retail - it was her passion. She was a manager at River Island and Monsoon and had a great life. Rebecca travelled the world, enjoying great holidays with her husband Dave, before having her children; 2 lovely little boys. Her family life was her whole world, along with her husband Dave.
She started to get backache in May 2018 and assumed it was from picking up the boys all the time. However, she started to be in a lot of pain and was losing a lot of weight very quickly and couldn't eat. She was in hospital before you knew it and they originally thought it was kidney stones. The day she was diagnosed was the 18th of June, 5 days before my wedding where she was due to be my bridesmaid. I was with her when she was told 6 4
and it's the day when all our worlds were forever changed - we were devastated, she had bile duct cancer and they couldn't remove it. Then it all moved very quickly after that and within a few days we were told it was terminal and she might have only up to 6 months to a year to live. She quickly became very poorly at the hospital and was given just 2 weeks to live. I can't even put into words how brave she truly was and that's when she made the decision to go to Forest Holme for her end of life care. As soon as we got there her first words were ‘Oh my god, this is a hotel, look at my bathroom’. She was so happy to be there, it was quiet, it was peaceful and there was so much sunlight. It was also a
by Esther Hubble (sister) place where her boys could run around and spend quality time with her, having ice creams in the outside area. In those last 2 weeks the staff were beyond incredible and they helped us as a family in every way possible and more.
Rebecca wanted someone with her all the time and Forest Holme were amazing at accommodating us as a family. We will always be thankful to them for being there for her and for us in her last few days. When she was scared and would cry that she didn't want to die, the staff were saying and doing everything that would put her at ease.
Me and some of Rebecca's friends raised over ÂŁ2000 for Forest Holme by doing The Great Hospice Hike. We have also done bingo, Tie A Yellow Ribbon event and the Memory Walk for Forest Holme. Light Up A Life
Thank you to everyone that supported our Light Up A Life service and first ever Memory Walk in November. Our annual remembrance service, which is a mixture of carols, readings prayers and reflection, is one of the most important dates in the hospice calendar, and is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of those who are sadly no longer with us.

Tree of Remembrance Our Tree of Remembrance raised a record-breaking ÂŁ7,500 for the hospice. We must say a special thanks to John Grinnell and his team at The Dolphin Shopping Centre for giving the tree such a prominent position and for all their help and support. We also want to thank everyone who kindly donated to the stand, all our volunteers for manning it every day and to Phil Smith (right) and Neil Hansler for performing.
8-year-old Kaden Dugmore (left) kindly switched on the lights of the Tree of Remembrance in Poole’s Dolphin Shopping Centre to launch our annual Light Up A Life appeal. Staff and volunteers from the hospice gathered to welcome Kaden, who turned on the lights before hanging a star in memory of his dad, Karl, who passed away at Forest Holme last year. 7
Festive Thank You The ladies from the Intermediary Relationship department at Nationwide Building Society HQ (right) in Bournemouth donated their time to help decorate the hospice for Christmas.
Stewarts Garden Centre (above) kindly donated two Christmas Trees to display in our reception area and garden at the hospice.
The team from Friends Fighting Cancer (above) visited the hospice to deliver Christmas gifts to all the patients.
Poole and Hamworthy Retained Firefighters (above) delivered a cheque for over ÂŁ500 that they raised through their Santa Sleigh trail around Poole before Christmas.

Fundraising Thank You
Our charity partners Beales in Poole hosted their own Big Brunch during Hospice Care Week, as well as a Cream Tea event with The Land Girls. They have so far raised £2,513. AFC Bournemouth Chairman, Jeff Mostyn and Head of Community, Steve Cuss (right), presented us with £1,000 cheque donation from their Cherries Community Fund.
Our Quiz Night (above) at Cobhams Sports Club raised £1,750. Our Fundraising Intern, Charlotte (above, left), secured her first corporate supporter for Forest Holme from the Tesco stores in Lilliput and Bournemouth Road, Anne Houston-Knight (above) raised over £1,000 by braving a Wing Walk, bring the total raised by Wing Walks in 2019 to over £17,000. 12

Hospice News Supporter Social Thank you to everyone that came along and contributed at our Supporter Social at Cobham Sports Club in December to reflect on 25 years and plan for the next 25. We must also say a big thanks to all our speakers from the hospice Dr Stephen Kirkham, Dr Beverly Lee and Anne Currie - and especially to David Thorburn and Mary Bevan for sharing their personal experiences, which they did so eloquently. Following the talks, the fundraising team hosted table discussions, where supporters were given the opportunity to discuss and feedback on a range of questions and topics to help take the hospice forward.

Grant Success Haskins Garden Centre Charitable Fund (above) very generously provided Forest Holme Hospice with a grant of almost £16,000 to update the in-patient ward for an enhanced patient experience.
‘Proud To Care’ Awards Forest Holme Hospice was successful in scooping the top prize in both the Palliative Care Worker of the Year and Volunteer of the Year categories of the Bournemouth Daily Echo’s 'Proud To Care' Awards. Congratulations to our Community Nurse, Hazel Mack (above, right) and Staff Nurse, Carmel Leddy (centre) - who was runner-up in the same category and to David Dawson (above, left) our gardening volunteer. Both winners highlighted in their acceptance speeches that these awards are also in recognition of all the hard work and dedication of everyone at the hospice who work together to care and support for patients and their family and friends during the most difficult time of their lives.

Alive: In The Face of Death Saturday 14th March - Saturday 16th May Forest Holme Hospice has teamed up with Lighthouse in Poole to hold an exhibition of selected images by internationally renowned photographer Rankin from his 2013 exhibition Alive: in the Face of Death. In the original exhibition, held at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Rankin, best known for his glamorous portraits of celebrities and fashion icons, set out to explore and challenge our perceptions of death and ignite dialogue. Through his lens, the stories of those touched by death were revealed and included people living with a terminal illness and those who have faced death and survived, alongside a plethora of people who work with individuals at the end of life, including Poole-based Palliative Care Specialist, Dr Simon Pennell. The Lighthouse exhibition focuses on three themes - professional mourners, celebrity death masks and homage to the Day of the Dead in Mexico – which are powerfully and expressively explored through Rankin’s striking images. A beautiful hardback book that accompanied the original exhibition and features more than 70 images and inspirational accounts of the people involved in the project will be available to refer to. Fitness Club to support Hospice After over indulging this Christmas, take part in an outdoor fitness class and support your local hospice. For every new member, Forest Fit Club is will donate £5 to Forest Holme Hospice Charity. The outdoor fitness club believe that fitness shouldn’t be lonely, intimidating or reliant on machines and indoor locations. They provide a community where fitness in the fresh air can be achieved while minimising any impact to the environment. Forest Fit Club welcomes all levels, ages and abilities, including new mums with little ones. Tree of Celebration Dedicate a leaf in memory of a loved one
For a donation to Forest Holme Hospice Charity, each leaf will be engraved with a personalised message for your loved one. Each leaf has been handcrafted by Dolphin Marine, and secured on the tree designed and built by Elite Fabrication and Welding Ltd. Your leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden for a year (from the day it is first mounted), after which you will be given the option to renew for another 12 months, or have your leaf returned for you to keep. You are welcome to come and view your leaf and reflect in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. To dedicate a leaf, please complete the form on the next page. We ask for a minimum yearly donation of ÂŁ60 to dedicate a leaf which can also be paid in monthly instalments of ÂŁ5. Each leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden 20 36

April Sunday 5th: Great Hospice Hike (Studland:10am) Guided by a professional walk leader, this scenic circular hike around the Isle of Purbeck of approximately 7 miles takes in some of Dorset's most beautiful views.
May Friday 15th: Charity Spring Ball (Parley Manor:7pm) Tickets are now on sale for the Charity Spring Ball at an early bird price of £65 (normal price £70), which includes a welcome drink, delicious 3-course meal (with 1/2 bottle of wine), coffee and chocolates. Hosted by Paul Kinvig, the evening will include live entertainment, disco, raffle and auction, plus a few surprises. (see page 20)
