DEAR FRIENDS
Welcome to our Winter newsletter. The last eighteen months, or so, have seen a particularly difficult period for the hospice sector up and down the length of the country. The increasing demand on existing services, the capacity to deliver the best possible service to every patient/those closest to them and the never-ending challenge of funding it all, is relentless. Palliative and end-of-life care is typically provided by a mixture of NHS, social care, private and charitable organisations, with the former often relying heavily on the latter to help fund basic provision. This can lead to inequity of accessing life-enhancing help, which is greatly needed by an ever growing number of people, simply because of geography, diagnosis or goodwill. The charity sector should be there to bring additional benefits to patients and their families at the end of their lives, not to be a wholesale replacement for it. We wouldn’t countenance this at the 2
beginning of life, so why should the end be any different? This is something that affects every single one of us: we are all going to die. So, how can Forest Holme Hospice Charity, along with our colleagues in a variety of different organisations, help to get it right? We will be hosting our second Support Social event (see p15) on the morning of Thursday December 5 at Cobham Sports and Social Club to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, but also look at the next few years and the opportunities and challenges they may bring. We would love for you to be there to share your experience of end-of-life care with us and tell us what matters/ mattered most to you as we look to shape our work for the future. Now, more than ever, is the time for everyone involved in the delivery of end-of-life care to work collaboratively to ensure that anyone who requires palliative and end-of–life care receives the best possible care and support when, how and where they need it. We have been very touched by the wonderful support of our local community towards Forest Holme Hospice during our 25th
anniversary and you can read all about some of the various activities which have been, and are, taking place for the work of the Hospice. All of your fundraising activities, donations and time given enable the teams at Forest Holme to provide life-enhancing support to our local communities in Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. You help them to provide the best possible care and support that we can give, be that in a patient’s own home, care homes, Poole Hospital or the Hospice itself. Our newsletter only scratches the surface of the wonderful support we receive during the course of the year, but we are incredibly grateful to everyone who helps us to make a difference. As you will see we have lots of lovely activities going on during the Festive Season and it would be fantastic to see you there. Thank you for your ongoing support.

IN MEMORY OF SYLVIA & IAN 1944 was a good year as both my parents were born, Ian Anthony Birch arrived in London on June 27th and Sylvia Ann Hunt arrived in Hastings on November 24th. That's were it all began before their paths crossed in Wimborne. Shortly after getting married along came Tracy born 1967, then Sarah in 1969 and finally me the baby in 1972. I chose the old picture of us 3 girls as it's my favourite one would you ever see this now in our health and safety mad world, kids holding a lion cub! Sadly our family was devastated in 1980 when my eldest sister Tracy passed away, though my parents always made sure Sarah and I continued to have a great life, including when they parted ways in 1988. They still celebrated together in 1995 the arrival of Dan their only Grandchild. Dad from a young apprentice trained as a carpenter; he was extremely clever and built us great stuff including making us a tree house and I had a cabin bed handcrafted. At home he loved 6 4
nothing better than a Summer Lightning ale in the garden and listening to the birds chattering. Dad loved his rock music and had long hair for years until he joined the Masons. He would often go on weekend mountain bike treks with his mates, nicknamed the Jolly Boys. Mum worked in a Health and beauty clinic for her career, while at home was an amazing gardener who gave Kew Gardens a run for their money. She loved bingo, was a keen swimmer and loved to walk with friends. She was always there to pet sit and was a mean card shark. In 2016 after a long period of treatment, we walked through the doors of Forest Holme with Mum.
(by Tiff Watson) I remember thinking the word 'Hospice' scared me but now sat writing this today I feel the opposite.
Mum was in Forest Holme for just over 3 weeks until she passed away in June. There is an unspoken magic and a different level of care I'd never previously witnessed, everyone who works there is brilliant. Whether patient or relative, whenever you needed support without a word uttered they were there, nothing was too much and we knew mum was in safe hands. Just 15 months later after my dad also became ill, we found ourselves back at Forest Holme, Dad was in longer and lived to celebrate Christmas and New Year, sadly passing away on the 14th January 2018.
Forest Holme is given a special gift and it stays in your heart. I was provided with counselling afterwards, which was so helpful.
In November 2018 my husband David did a Skydive for them and raised over ÂŁ1,200. So I thought its my turn and because I love Forest Holme I did a full head shave in October. I'll never be able to repay them for making my parents final days dignified and serene but I can help by raising money for them.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE TREE HOLDING HANDS IN THE DARK
We want to say a massive thank you to Andy Rice (above, left) and his team from Elite Fabrication & Welding Ltd and Neil Ball (above, right) and the team from Dolphin Marine, who together created our lovely Celebration of Life Tree in the hospice garden. Thanks to their generosity, Forest Holme supporters are able to dedicate a leaf for a donation, which will be engraved with a personalised message for your loved one. (see p22) So far the tree has raised over ÂŁ2,000 for the hospice.

FUNDRAISING NEWS Thank you to Gloria Bowman and her sister Glynis (right), who organised a Garden Party at Glynis' house to raise money for Forest Holme, where Mrs Bowman's husband, Bernard, was a patient last year. They had a fantastic turnout despite the weather and raised £1,647 for the hospice.
The Brownsea branch (right) of the Dorset & Yeovil Oddfellows have chosen Forest Holme as its charity to support and have already hosted various fundraising events. The residents and staff at Millbrook Retirement Home (right) near Child Okeford, kindly presented the hospice with a cheque for £500, which they raised at their Summer Fayre.

Our charity partnership with Beales of Poole (above) in The Dolphin Shopping Centre continues to flourish and we're delighted to confirm that they have now raised over £1,000 for the hospice. Maria Thomas-Luker’s family (left), hosted a BBQ, which included a family raffle at £1 a ticket, of which the winner would receive half the total raised. They raised £70 and the winner was her husband, who kindly donated his £35 share back, so Forest Holme received the full £70 donation. A big thank you to the Downing Family, who raised £2,000 in memory of Louise Downing, by organising a Fancy Dress Party at Longthorns Farm as it was Louise's wish for family and friends to “enjoy themselves, and have fun and not be sad.” Louise's mum, Marilyn Rice, and brother Mark (right), visited the hospice to deliver a donation to our Community Nurse. LIGHT UP A LIFE - MEMORY WALK Join us on our brand new charity walk to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have received care from Forest Holme Hospice. The walk will begin from Poole Park Cricket Ground at 5.45pm, but please arrive at 5.30pm so we can check you in and provide you with your LED candle for your lantern. It costs ÂŁ5 to register and you will then be sent a paper lantern bag in the post, for you to decorate at home and then bring along on the night. We will then provide you will a battery tea light to light up your lantern. At the end of the walk, your lantern can be placed under the Christmas tree outside the Civic Centre. The walk should take around 30 minutes. You are then invited to join us at the Civic Centre for our annual Light Up A Life Service at 6.30pm to 8.00pm. LIGHT UP A LIFE - TREE OF REMEMBRANCE Each year at Christmas time, our Light up a Life appeal provides the local community with the opportunity to dedicate a star on our Tree of Remembrance. All donations made during this appeal will support patients and families in need of our care over the festive season. Simply visit the tree during December (daily except Sundays) to add your dedication or complete the form on page 21. Once we receive your form, your loved one’s name will be handwritten onto a Light up a Life star and displayed on the tree. This year, the tree will be displayed outside Marks & Spencer in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Poole from Thursday 28th November - Wednesday 19th December The stall will be manned between 10.30am till 3.30pm.

Celebration of Life Tree Dedicate a leaf in memory of a loved one
For a donation to Forest Holme Hospice Charity, each leaf will be engraved with a personalised message for your loved one. Each leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden. Each leaf has been handcrafted by Dolphin Marine, and secured on the tree designed and built by Elite Fabrication and Welding Ltd . Your leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden for a year (from the day it is first mounted), after which you will be given the option to renew for another 12 months, or have your leaf returned for you to keep. You are welcome to come and view your leaf and reflect in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. To dedicate a leaf, please complete the form on the next page. MARGARET’S 25 YEARS Many of you will recognise Margaret Batchelor, who has been volunteering on the ward at Forest Holme for the past 25 years, just after the hospice first opened its doors in 1994. Margaret moved to Poole from London and began working at Forest Holme just 6 months after it opened. She was already a volunteer at Poole Hospital, helping with library books. Her brother had died at a hospice in Essex in 1993 and when she saw Forest Holme’s ‘Buy A Brick’ campaign, Margaret decided she wanted to help when it opened and she has now been volunteering for a total of 30 years, 25 of which have been at the hospice. Her role involves getting lists of patients, making drinks, cleaning the kitchen, filling and emptying the dishwasher. Other responsibilities include checking the fridge is stocked, distributing menus, putting stores away, running errands, including to the blood clinic, sorting out linen and putting admission packs together for nurses. Sainsbury’s regularly deliver lots of free flowers to the hospice, so Margaret arranges them, making sure they are fresh and have clean water. She also spends time talking to patients and families, especially at times when they just want an informal chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit. Margaret says that one of the biggest highlights of volunteering is seeing how grateful people are, even for such small things as a smile, hug or cup of tea. She also enjoys helping out at the pop-in group and enjoys helping give people a lift – many are so joyful just to see you. She really wants to encourage more people to volunteer at the hospice and is keen to dispel the myth that hospices are sad places. She said, “While there is a bit of form filling to become a volunteer at the beginning , it is definitely worth it as the role is extremely rewarding.” Congratulations, Margaret, on over 25 years of dedicated service! 18 24
HOSPICE NEWS Forest Holme was honoured to organise a wedding blessing for Gemma and her partner Mark (right), while he was being cared for on the ward.
We said goodbye to two wonderful staff members, as Claire McLachlan (above, centre), a Facilitator in End Of Life Care, and receptionist Terri Hague (below, left) both retired and will be sadly missed by staff, patients and visitors.

£25 FOR 25 YEARS OF CARE Thank you to all those who have donated £25 during our 25th Anniversary Year. The fundraising total currently stands at
£8,553. 2019 marks 25 years since Forest Holme Hospice Charity was established to enhance the lives of patients living with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Since then, donations from supporters have helped the hospice to care for around 20,000 adults and their families throughout Dorset. By donating £25 during our anniversary year, you will help to continue our vital services over the next 25 years and support terminally ill patients during the most difficult time of their lives. CHALLENGES Congratulations to Nat Morrell (left), who enjoyed a rehydrating pint having completed the Great North Run and raising £215 for the hospice. Nat finished the race in an impressive 2hrs 07min, said it was "a fantastic experience and hopefully will contribute to your brilliant work."

25 YEARS OF MEMORIES In 2013 the hospice underwent a ÂŁ1m refurbishment to change the layout of the building and bring the beds downstairs and thanks to the generosity of Hamworthy Heating Limited, our heating system was also upgraded by the company providing two free boilers.

EVENTS CALENDAR 2019 November Saturday 9th: Comin Home Baby! 3 - Comin Home Baby! is back for a third year, when Dorset's finest soul DJs will be spinning all that is best in soul music at Canford Heath Community Centre to raise money for Forest Holme. It’s a fantastic night, especially if you like Northern Soul/Tamla Motown/70s Soul/ R&B, etc. Thursday 28th - Wednesday 18th December: Tree of Remembrance - Visit our Tree of Remembrance outside M&S in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Poole and dedicate a star in memory of someone special. Our Light up a Life stand will be open daily (except Sundays) between 10.30am - 3.30pm until Wednesday 18th December. (see p20)

Thursday 28th: Light Up A Life - Join us for our annual service on the steps of the Civic Centre in Poole to remember a loved-one, irrespective of whether they were cared for by the hospice. The service, which is a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance, will be led by Rev Fraser Smith, with The Mayor of Poole in attendance, while The Salvation Army and Wessex Chorus community choir will provide music. Following the service, sherry and mince pies will be served, courtesy of the Mayor of Poole. (see p18)

Holding Hands In The Dark by David Thorburn David Thorburn’s ‘Holding Hands In The Dark’ is an honest and open account of what it’s like for a wife and mum of four, with eight grandchildren, living with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Featuring poems, photographs and diary extracts, the publication documents the impact of life with his beloved wife Anita, detailing her physical and emotional journey from initial diagnosis to her passing at Forest Holme in 2017, age 63.
