Welcome to our Summer newsletter. We are now in the midst of celebrating our 25th Anniversary year and have recently held an afternoon tea on our actual birthday as a thank you for staff, both past and present, who have worked at Forest Holme during this time. It was lovely to welcome back so many people who have worked at Forest Holme during the last twenty five years and have played an integral part in making the Hospice something we are all so incredibly proud of today.

We are under no illusion that the next twenty five years will bring opportunities and challenges in equal measure, but we hope that with your continued support and collaboration we can build on the legacy of the last twenty five years to ensure that the people of East Dorset receive the best possible end of life care they can. IN MEMORY OF ANDY McMINN 01.03.61 – 03.02.18
suffer severe stomach pains and after numerous GP and A&E visits he was fast-tracked to Poole Hospital. In January 2018 we were told the worst possible news that Andy had terminal cancer. Andy took it on the chin as usual until he was admitted to Sandbanks Ward later that same month and unfortunately was told the Big C had spread and no more could be done for him. At the end of January a bed became available at Forest Holme, initially to help his pain management, with the hope that he’d be able to return home to his two dogs and, of course, me.
Andy was born in Oxford. He was posted to Poole as he was a Royal Marine Commando, a job he was very proud of. We met and married in 1991 and started a life travelling near and far, with Turkey being a particular favourite destination of ours, which we visited for the last time in 2017. At home Andy would already be planning the next trip away! From day one, nothing was ever too much trouble at Forest Holme. Andy was a keen sportsman, There was always somebody with a especially rugby, which he played cheerful smile to talk through and for the Royal Marines, Lychett explain what was going on. Andy sat on the bench with his two fingers up to the Big C! Unfortunately, by the Friday we were told Andy had renal failure and it was just a matter of time. He passed away with dignity and peacefully early on 3rd February 2018 with me by his side.
The support myself, my family and friends received from counselling was wonderful. I still go to a monthly Bereavement Support group meeting and find going through the doors a comfort. Forest Holme Hospice was one of Andy’s chosen charities and with over 500 people attending his funeral, we had a lovely donation to give them. Since then I have done the Fire and Ice Walk, walking over hot coals and broken glass, raising £1,000, while Lychett Minster RFC
organised an Ascot Day in Andy’s memory that raised over £3,000. A memorial game at Swanage and Wareham RFC also raised £4,600 for the charity, making over £10,000 for the hospice in total. Andy wouldn’t believe how popular a person he was and the legend
lives on with more events planned later this year. The care and support given by Forest Holme is priceless, so if we can pay a small amount back we will try our hardest. Thank you is a small word.

THE SECRET WARDROBE

On March 31 our shop, The Secret Wardrobe, officially closed its doors. Since the shop opened seven years ago, it has contributed a total profit of £151,000 to the work of Forest Holme Hospice. This is a wonderful achievement and we would like to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of this success. Whether you have donated clothing, volunteered your time, or provided your services free of charge – you have all played a part in making it something we could be very proud of. Not only has the shop raised a significant amount of money for the lifeenhancing work of the hospice, but it has also been a place of great comfort and emotional support for both customers, and volunteers, who have had their own personal experience of Forest Holme. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who made the shop what it was from yourself, to the army of loyal volunteers both front and back of house who took the shop to their hearts, to Natalie and Dawn for their creativity, dedication, hard work and passion, to Viv for our outstanding windows and to the office staff/volunteers for their financial and administrative input. Everyone played their part in making it award-winning and something we could all be very proud of.

IS YOUR FAMILY INHERITANCE SAFE? Losing a loved one is always tragic – and made worse if there is friction between family members. You are at your most vulnerable and least able to cope with conflict. Sadly, this scenario is becoming more prevalent as families fall out over their inheritance. More wills are being contested. Often, it is caused by remarriage. Under the law, getting married nullifies any previous wills. So children from the first marriage can find themselves disinherited (even though the deceased never intended this to happen). Conversely, not getting married can also create issues. Cohabiting partners do not enjoy the same legal rights as married couples. So if the deceased died without a will, the surviving cohabitant can be left with nothing (even though their loved one intended to leave them everything). But it is not just husbands, wives, partners, children, stepchildren and wards who can dispute a will. The way is also open for brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, nephews, nieces, cousins and longstanding friends – but only if they were:
maintained by the deceased
dependant on the deceased
treated as if they were a child of the deceased.
Contesting A Will? Beware The Six-Month Time Limit Worried that your loved one’s will was not what they truly intended? There is a time limit for contesting it. You have only six months from the date that probate was granted. Probate is the legal ‘proving’ of a will, the confirmation that it is valid and can be acted upon. There are some exceptions to the six-month rule – notably for suspected fraud (for which there is no time limit). So it is worth seeking out legal advice even if six months have passed. Also, seek legal advice as soon as possible if you suspect something is wrong before probate has been granted. 24
What Are The Grounds For Contesting A Will?
The main grounds for disputing a will include:
Mental capacity – was the person who made the will mentally able to take decisions?
Undue influence – did someone force or trick them into changing their will?
Lack of knowledge and approval – did the person making the will understand the document they signed?
Execution – was the will signed and witnessed in the correct legal manner?
Construction and rectification – was the will badly worded? Were there errors?
Forgery – rare but not unknown.
Fraudulent calumny – if someone told lies about you to affect your inheritance.
How Can I Contest A Will (Or Safeguard It From Challenges)? There are solicitors who specialise in contested wills cases. Some are members of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS). ACTAPS promotes expertise in this specialist area by providing legal training. THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY On Saturday June 8th, we will welcome 200 guests to the walled garden at Upton Country Estate for the biggest party in our charity’s history.

Saturday 15th: Open Garden - as a tribute to his wife Brenda, Ellis Hobbs is opening up his beautiful garden (below) in Church Knowle (nr. Corfe Castle) from 11am - 4pm, with refreshments, Pimms, Purbeck Ice Cream, plant sale, book stall, tombola and more. Entry by donation.
Friday 21st: Wear Yellow Day - gather your friends, family, colleagues and school mates to take part in this year's Wear Yellow Day in exchange for a small donation. Or perhaps host a cake sale, coffee morning or raffle?
July Friday 19th: Garden Party - our Patron, Dame Annette Brooke, will be hosting an afternoon Garden Party for Forest Holme at her house in Broadstone. Thursday 25th: Wareham River Cruise - join us for our ever-popular Wareham River Cruise, which includes a stop-off at Wareham Quay, live on-board entertainment, fish and chips and a chance to watch the fireworks at Poole Quay. 34
October Friday 25th: Halloween Dance-A-Thon - join us for our Halloween Dance-A-Thon; a 4 hour Dancing & Fitness Fundraising Challenge on Friday 25th October 7.00pm - 9.30pm at Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna.
November Thursday 28th: Light up a Life - enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life service at the Civic Centre, Poole from 6.30pm till 8pm.
December Saturday 7th: Dance Through The Decades - enjoy a Christmas Party at Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna with music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s from 7pm - midnight. Tickets ÂŁ35pp includes a two course meal, coffee/tea, two glasses of wine and a disco.
