As we approach the second half of the year, our Board of Trustees will be looking forward to setting out the Charity’s plans for the next five years and we would really appreciate your input to help shape our future. IN MEMORY OF ANITA THORBURN June 5, 1954 to October 23, 2017 As well as a tribute to Anita- the love of my life and my best friendthis is a letter of thanks to everyone at Forest Holme, in particular the nursing staff: you are amazing people, total professionals and shining examples of humanity. You have all the skills involved in supporting people who are more in need of help than at any other time in their lives. They know that they are in the safest possible hands because of how you deploy those skillsconsiderately, compassionately, with absolute respect for your first time I had seen this lady since patients. (by David Thorburn) Only a month or so earlier she had been well enough to go on holiday to Mallorca, our favourite destination, but in that month the cancer had progressed to its final stage. I really struggled then, and still do, to comprehend how swiftly Anita's illness took her from me at the end. But as the nurses got her pain under control Anita found a wonderful serenity. She had her children, grandchildren and me with her; she was comfortable; she had peace of mind even as she knew her race was nearly run. At 10.45 on the morning of Monday, October 23, surrounded by her family, she slipped away. Life with Anita was happy and complete and I can't imagine it any other way; she was such an attractive person with such a lovely character. She was great fun to be with: witty, amusing and good humoured; always smiling her beautiful warm smile; a bright positive inspiration to everyone close to her. With Anita laughter was never far away. Hardly anything would get her down and then rarely for long. She was generous, caring and unselfish: she always put others first. Just in case it seems like I am describing a saint, let me add in qualification that this was a worldly saint made of warm flesh and blood who lived
life to the full, who could find pleasure in the simple things but also enjoyed a little selfindulgence from time to time, who had a mischievous side to her and was apt to be caught wearing a very cheeky expression on her face. But, for all her sometimes wicked humour, she had a complete absence of malice towards anyone. She was a gentle, loving soul, with the lightest of touches, especially with children, but also a strong, resilient woman who tackled life's challenges head on and showed no fear in the face of her illness: not once did I hear her complain about it or ask “Why me?� She just got on with living.

HOLDING HANDS IN THE DARK This is exactly what they did for Anita and so enabled her to live her last hours in the way she had lived her 63 years: graciously and courageously, with a heart and spirit to admire and with what I call her passionate simplicity. I miss her so very much, unbearably at times, but I am so thankful that she was my wife. Holding Hands In The Dark by David Thorburn David Thorburn’s ‘Holding Hands In The Dark’ is an honest and open account of what it’s like for a wife and mum of four, with eight grandchildren, living with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Featuring poems, photographs and diary extracts, the publication documents the impact of life with his beloved wife Anita, detailing her physical and emotional journey from initial diagnosis to her passing at Forest Holme in 2017, age 63.

One of our supporters has recently sold her husband's beloved car at auction and donated £3,500 to the hospice as a thank you for the care he received at Forest Holme. We are so grateful for this absolutely lovely and generous gesture and this money will be used to provide care and support to others during the most difficult time of their lives. A charity event celebrating Royal Ascot Ladies Day raised £1,000 for Forest Holme Hospice. Thank you to everyone that braved the weather in June to Tie A Yellow Ribbon in memory of a loved one at the hospice. The event, including dedications and donations made by those unable to attend, raised over ÂŁ3,000 for the hospice and was once again a lovely day of celebration and reflection.

HOSPICE NEWS The hospice staff pulled together to make one of our patient's final wishes come true. John Harley (above) was a huge Harley Davidson fan but had never ridden on one, so after a couple of phone calls he received a surprise visit by the Arrowsmiths and Manic Mondays bikers, complete with a selection of Harleys and a trike bike. The group then took him on a ride down to Poole Quay for Bike Night and rode in convoy along the front where he was greeted by wellwishers before being safely returned to the hospice. We had a visit from Room to Reward to say ‘thank you’ to three nominated 'Hidden Heroes' with a lovely surprise of a complimentary hotel stay for a well-earned break. Working with partner hotels, the charity offers the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and deserving break in order to acknowledge their dedication, so congratulations to our volunteers Sue, Elaine and Margaret. 9 19
HOSPICE NEWS The team were once again at Poole Hospital for this year's Dying Matters Awareness Week. To encourage more open conversations about death, staff and visitors were asked to share their Bucket List of things they want to experience in their lifetime. Some of our favourite responses were: "Have a micro pig", "Skinny dip in Greece" and "Drive an American 'Big Rig' truck".
The Cancer Support Group, Cancare, has very kindly given Poole Hospital’s Lymphoedema Clinic, which is based at Forest Holme, a Plinth Treatment Couch and Hydroven Lymph Assist. The donation was instigated by current Lymphoedema Clinic patient, Mary Brennen, former Treasurer at Cancare, who is pictured with Belinda Knott, Senior Lymphoedema Nurse Specialist (above). 20
A big thank you to all the Marines at Hamworthy Barracks who very kindly donated a huge range of items for our ward, including two new reclining sofas for the relative's lounge, privacy screens, a games console for the children, along with Kindles and headphones for all the patients to use. They also bought Pulse Oximeters for our Community Nurses.
Thanks to Holmans (left), we now have an incredible 65" Panasonic television for our relatives lounge worth £1,500.
So grateful to Simon ‘The Driveway Doctor’ (left), who donated two days of his time and resources to renovate our drive completely free of charge, while your generous donations have enabled us to have Sportshall Markings (right) paint new parking bay lines, which they kindly did at a discounted rate. Thank you to our charity partner Stewarts Garden Centres, who kindly donated a selection of 25 plants marking 25 years for our hospice garden, which David, our volunteer gardener, has very kindly planted, with the help of gardeners Viv (left) and Petula (right). 21 29
Dedicate a leaf on our celebration tree in memory of a loved one
For a donation to Forest Holme Hospice Charity, each leaf will be engraved with a personalised message for your loved one. Each leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden. Each leaf has been handcrafted by Dolphin Marine, and secured on the tree designed and built by Elite Fabrication and Welding Ltd . Your leaf tribute will be displayed within our hospice garden for a year (from the day it is first mounted), after which you will be given the option to renew for another 12 months, or have your leaf returned for you to keep. You are welcome to come and view your leaf and reflect in relaxed and comfortable surroundings. To dedicate a leaf, please complete the form on the next page. SHEILA’S FIRST DAY Sheila Banyard started as a Nurse at Forest Holme Hospice on the very first day it opened in 1994 and she recently popped in to join our 25th anniversary staff party (see page 9), where she took time out to chat about her experiences. Tell us a bit about your background and how you came to work at Forest Holme? Before coming to Forest Holme I worked as an auxiliary nurse at Poole Hospital on Ward B3 which was a busy 30 bedded ward with mainly oncology patients having radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatment. I was very fortunate to transfer from there to Forest Holme with Sister Moira Higgs. You started at Forest Holme Hospice on the very first day it opened – what do you remember from that time? I remember feeling very excited on the first day. We spent a few days getting to know all our new colleagues from different backgrounds. Most of the day we were putting away all the equipment and rearranging furniture. We had only one patient on the first day therefore he had lots of attention. After coming from a busy ward it was very rewarding to have more time with patients and their families. Was the hospice very different to how it is now? After coming back to Forest Holme it was very nice to be met by the receptionist (we previously had to run up and down the stairs to answer the doorbell). Also such a good idea to have the patients downstairs with outside access to a lovely courtyard (we often said that it would be cooler for them and also a much better outlook). More single rooms with en-suites is a big improvement. What are your fondest memories of working at the hospice? Lots of happy memories – always lots of laughter. I remember taking patients 18 24
to Poole Park or to the Dolphin Centre for a coffee and cake. We had a few weddings at Forest Holme and also a christening. I went with a patient once to her daughter’s house for a family party. We felt like one big family from the Consultant Dr Kirkham, doctors, and nurses to secretaries, fundraisers and cleaners and not forgetting the volunteers. We had lots of support for all the sad time as well. We had all sorts of animals visit from a parrot, ducks, cats and dogs. I’ve seen this still happens now which is wonderful. What did you do after leaving the hospice? I retired in 2008 after working for 14 years at Forest Holme. I spend most of the time walking my dog, looking after grandchildren and lots of socialising, still meeting up with some former Forest Holme staff. How did it feel coming back recently for the 25th anniversary staff party? On walking into Forest Holme I immediately felt the caring and friendly atmosphere – that hasn’t changed. It felt very different to go upstairs and see the changes made there. Although there were lots of new faces, a few former colleagues were there so it was nice to catch up with them. Everybody was so welcoming. I still feel so privileged to have worked for Forest Holme and all the experiences I had. there were lots of new faces, 25

We were buoyed to hear that Will Shakespeare (below) has raised ÂŁ250 for Forest Holme by completing the recent Round the Island Race.

25 YEARS OF MEMORIES In October 2006 the Hospice’s second Consultant, Saskie Dorman (above) was appointed and we are delighted to say that she is still here continuing to do a fantastic job. In 2008 our new relatives’ lounge was officially opened by Fiona Castle (left), wife of entertainer Roy Castle OBE, who laid the foundation stone of the building in 1993 just before his death.

FOREST HOLME HOSPICE ROCKS
Thank you to everyone that has painted pebbles or shared photos of ones they have found as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations. If you'd like to get involved, all you need to do is paint a pebble (or write a positive message), write ‘Forest Holme Hospice Rocks’ on the back, take a photo, upload it to our Facebook page, then hide the rock and make a stranger smile when they find it. Hopefully they will feel the love and paint one too!

EVENTS CALENDAR 2019 September Sunday 8th: Mr Kyps Family Fun Day - Mr Kyps is proud to present this family event at Huntick Farm in Lytchett Matravers from 2pm7.30pm with live music with lots of children's activities. Adults ÂŁ5 each - children go free. Anyone wishing to camp at Huntick Farm for the festival can phone and reserve a spot for a tent, campervan or caravan by calling 01202 622222. Sunday 29th: The Great Hospice Hike - this scenic professionally-led hike - taking in some of Dorset's most beautiful views - is a circular trip from Heath Green Road in Studland to Old Harry Rocks, before heading to Ballard Down, then towards The Obelisk, Studland Golf Course and Agglestone Rock. (See page 36)
October Friday 25th: Halloween Dance-A-Thon - join us for our Halloween Dance-A-Thon; a 2.5 hour Dancing & Fitness Fundraising Challenge on Friday 25th October 7.00pm - 9.30pm at Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna. Children welcome! (See page 37)
December Saturday 7th: Dance Through The Decades - enjoy a Christmas Party at Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna with music from the 60s, 70s, 80s 90s & 00s from 7pm - midnight. Tickets ÂŁ35pp includes a two course meal, coffee/tea, two glasses of wine and a disco. Light up a Life Thursday 28th November: - enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life service at the Civic Centre, Poole from 6.30pm till 8pm.
