BRASSBAND
AFC Bournemouth fan Gary and his 13-year-old son, Kai, had a morning to remember when Cherries’ Manager, Eddie Howe, took time out of his busy schedule to pop-in to the hospice for a chat. Eddie was happy to pose for photos with both family and staff and also promised Kai a signed photo of the team.
Our patient Ian had a lovely surprise when the Bournemouth Concert Band visited to put on a very personal performance for him in the lounge. Ian has played the cornet since the age of 4 and joined the Concert Band about 18 months ago, so his partner Roz secretly organised for them to put on a special concert at the hospice in his honour.

IN MEMORY OF CLOKEY By Sarah Cloke (Wife of Steve) Sarah Cloke gave up alcohol for 3 months to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice Charity because she promised her beloved ‘Clokey’ she would. This is her story… “We didn’t want to be in a Hospice. We thought we could manage at home. When the time came we knew we couldn’t. All our experiences with the NHS in Poole have been exceptional over the last 4 years but Forest Holme was 6 Stars. The care and love of the staff and the peace of the surroundings is unbelievable. Being there made it possible for me to spend my last days with Steve being a loving wife while the professionals did the caring. I am eternally grateful for that. His passing was very peaceful and I have no regrets at all. To help me through the early days of bereavement I had promised Steve I would give up alcohol for three months. It occurred to me I could put this to good use by
asking for sponsorship. In the first 48 hours I had raised nearly £1,000 for Forest Holme Hospice, and thanks to the fabulous faith and support from all my friends, it’s going to a great place so they can help look after others in the same loving and caring way they did for us. Thank you to all the staff at Forest Holme Hospice.” 55
EVENT NEWS SUNFLOWER BALL Our annual Sunflower Ball, which took place in September at the Harbour Heights Hotel in Sandbanks, raised ÂŁ5,000 for the hospice. The evening was attended by nearly 90 guests, many of whom had personal experiences of the hospice, who enjoyed a threecourse meal, magician and live music from 5th Avenue, while money was raised through a Silent Auction, Raffle and a Mystery Box sale. Next year the hospice will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special charity ball in June during Hospice Awareness Month.
HOSPICE CARE WEEK Forest Holme Hospice joined around 100 hospices across the UK in marking Hospice Care Week to raise awareness and dispel some of the myths surrounding hospice care. The chosen theme of this year’s event was ‘Heart My Hospice’ and Forest Holme hosted a stall within Poole Hospital, where they asked hospital staff and members of the public to share their experiences of what hospice care means to them.

GLORIOUS FOOD THE BIG BRUNCH
Staff at Poole Hospital, Barclays House and Forest Holme all participated in The Big Brunch during Hospice Care Week to help raise money for the hospice.
COFFEE MORNING Jenny Waller kindly hosted a Coffee Morning, with the help of her daughter Joanna, at her house and raised £429 for the hospice.
COFFEE & CAKE Thank you to Michelle Belcher and all her staff for raising £630 for Forest Holme through a Coffee Morning at The Snack and the Hamworthy Post Office next door. 8
FARMERS MARKET Phil McKay and his team at Barclays arranged a Farmers Market in Barclays House, selling fresh homegrown vegetables from his allotment and raised £1,114 for Forest Holme, which hopefully will be match-funded. The team were also tasked with creating some homemade treats to sell, such as bean salad, bread, tzatziki and hummus, all served with the recipes included.
BBQ Andy and Diana Ginever organised a special BBQ fundraiser in memory of Chris (dad and husband) on the third anniversary of his passing at Forest Holme and raised £400.
AFTERNOON TEA Thank you to Chris Hobbs and his wife, who organised an special Afternoon Tea Party at their home in Swanage, which included a model fairground that he had built himself. The event raised £413 for Forest Holme.

Thank you to Ian Yeomans, who abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and raised £590 for the hospice in memory of his Mum.
Nigel Tokley kindly dropped into the hospice to present us with a donation of nearly £5,000 having completed a tandem skydive, while Shannon Riley (below), also completed a skydive for Forest Holme and raised £330.

BOURNEMOUTH MARATHON FESTIVAL Thank you to everyone that took part in this year's Bournemouth Marathon Festival in support of Forest Holme. A huge round of applause to the following stars who took part in either the Kids 1K, 5K, 10K or half-marathon and raised money for the hospice: Jake Dixon, Team Mazars (above), Victoria Cockwell, Philippa Davis, Maxine Hartwell, Abby Hartwell, Gaye Farmer, Linsey Hancock, Victoria Caddel, Rebecca Love, Lauren Mackenzie, Becky Millhouse, Jennie Carter and Josh Stone.
We must give a special mention to 3-year-old Charlie Williams, who ran the Bournemouth Marathon Festival Children's 1K in the pouring rain, representing Forest Holme. Charlie was a regular visitor to Forest Holme when his grandpa was a patient and he remembers all the happy times he was there - playing with all the toys, the digger, drawing and of course climbing on grandpa's bed for lots of cuddles. 11 13
PURBECK MARATHON A big thank you to Joe Beadleson, who has so far raised nearly £300 for the hospice, having completed the Purbeck Marathon. Meanwhile Simon Hobbs completed the Purbeck 16 (over half a marathon) in a time of 3 hours and 5 minutes, finishing in a position of 95 out of 186 and so far has raised around £500. Also, a special mention to Kirsty Drewett, who raised over £1,300.
BIKE RIDES We were absolutely thrilled to have been given a donation of £1,176 from Peter Bowen, who raised the money by completing a 100 mile cycle ride in memory of Frances Stevens, who was cared for by Forest Holme. Ian Taylor embarked on a 100K sponsored cycle ride to Weymouth and back and raised over £1,000 for the hospice in memory of his Mum, Diane, who you may recall was visited by her horse Skipper when she was a patient.

HOSPICE HIKE Thank you to everyone who supported and took part in our Great Hospice Hike across the Purbecks in September, which raised ÂŁ5,000 for the hospice.

HAPPY FEET Thank you to all our brave fundraisers who walked barefoot across burning coals and razor-sharp broken glass to raise money for the hospice.
SCREWBALL RALLY Amazing levels of endurance from Paul Bolson and his wife, who raised ÂŁ250 for the hospice by participating in the Screwball Rally which visited France, Germany, Czech Republic and Poland over five days.

PAMPER PARTY Thank you to Liz Dean who raised £150 for the hospice through raffles at her Tropic Pamper Parties. Liz organised it in memory of Kevin Boon, who passed away at the hospice earlier this year, and was a good friend of her husband.

LADIES NIGHT Our fundraiser Charlie was delighted to accept a cheque donation of £2,500 kindly raised for the hospice in memory of Andrew McMinn at an Ascot Ladies Night at Lytchett Minster RFC. 10 10 10

RALLY REWARDS Thank you to the Pilford Heath Transport and Heritage Group, who presented us with a donation of £200 raised at their summer rally.
GOLDEN DONATION Mr & Mrs M Barham very generously donated £220 to the hospice, which was raised in lieu of presents for their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
BIG DIFFERENCE We had a lovely surprise visit from 6-year-old Deegan and 8-year-old Cali, who kindly brought in a donation of £86 that they collected from their family through one of our 'Small change, BIG difference' jars.
PLOUGHING FUNDS The Wareham and Purbeck Young Farmers and Vintage Ploughing raised a total of £1,100 for the hospice at their recent Ploughing Match. 16

QUIZ NIGHT Congratulations to The Cob Nuts team who were crowned winners at our Quiz Night at Cobham Sports And Social Club. Over 200 people participated in the quiz, which raised ÂŁ1,752 for the hospice.
NOVEL IDEA We had the pleasure of welcoming the ladies from Tesco Tower Park Community Room to the hospice. They raised ÂŁ300, through their in-store customer book shelf, so thank you to everyone that donated or bought books.

MAGIC OF THE CUP Thank you to Swanage Town & Herston Football Club, who hosted the first annual Jimmy Hollywood Cup which saw Corfe Castle FC take on Swanage. Jimmy was cared for at Forest Holme and the Hollywood family organised this special event - which also included kids activities, BBQ and raffle - and raised £2,000 for the hospice.
PUB ROCK Landlady Anna and her team at The Lord Nelson hosted a special music event on Poole Quay for Forest Holme and Teddy Rocks Festival, raising £822 to be split between both charities. The pub have been wonderful supporters of Forest Holme and have so far raised over £25,000 in memory of their friend Donna Turner.
VILLAGE QUIZ Thank you to Kate Coombs, who very kindly organised a Quiz Night in her local village and raised £623 for the hospice. 18
CAR BOOT Thank you to Ruby Ball who raised over £55 for the hospice through local Car Boot Sales over the summer.

SOUND OF THE SUBURBS Gail Edmunds organised an evening with Lewis & The Sound of the Suburbs event, in memory loved ones for Forest Holme and raised £604.
OFF TO A TEE Despite inclement weather, the Canford School Golf Club's first charity event went off well with 43 people attending and £230 raised for Forest Holme. 19
LIGHT UP A LIFE - TREE OF REMEMBRANCE Each year at Christmas time, our Light up a Life appeal provides the local community with the opportunity to dedicate a star on our Tree of Remembrance. All donations made during this appeal will support patients and families in need of our care over the festive season. Simply visit the tree during December to add your dedication or complete the form on page 21. Once we receive your form, your loved one’s name will be handwritten onto a Light up a Life star and displayed on the tree. This year, the tree will be displayed at the Eco Hub in the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Poole from Monday 3rd Wednesday 19th December between 10.30am till 3.30pm.

COMMUNITY NEWS DROPS OF BLOOD Staff at the NHS Blood Donation Clinic in Poole have been given these amazing knitted blood drops by some of their donors to sell to raise money for the hospice. The blood clinic has also been raising money using our collection tins in the clinic.

NATIONWIDE Our fundraising team visited the Nationwide Building Society in Christchurch recently to talk to their staff about the work of Forest Holme, as part of our exciting new charity partnership with the branch.
ODDFELLOWS Vivamente Voices, a fun and friendly adult choir based in Colehill near Wimborne, has very kindly chosen Forest Holme Hospice as their Charity of the Year in 2019.
KNITTERS Mrs Elson kindly delivered these beautiful hand knitted blankets and scarves to the hospice. Her friend, Mrs Trim, made one of the blankets, which is made all the more remarkable when you discover that she's 96years-old and almost blind. Helen regularly makes these wonderful handcrafted creations for us to sell in the run up to Christmas to raise money for the hospice.

BOOK AWARD Congratulations to Forest Holme’s lead Palliative Care Consultant, Saskie Dorman, who won 1st prize at the British Medical Association Patient Information Awards in the 'Information for Children' category for her 'Joe’s Liver Transplant Book'. The story book, introduced by the Children's Liver Disease Foundation to explain the process of liver transplant to children, was written by Saskie as she sat by the bedside of her five year old son Joe, while he recovered from his liver transplant in 2016. When Saskie was preparing Joe for his transplant, she realised that there were no books specifically to explain the process to children, so decided to write a story based on her own family’s experience. Judges described the book as “…..a unique resource. It is vitally important in explaining a life-changing massive operation to young children” and added “it deals with a sensitive topic in a way that is highly accessible to its target audience.” 26 26

THE SECRET WARDROBE Dear Supporters It is with great sadness that we have to announce that The Secret Wardrobe shop will be closing at the end of March 2019. The Charity’s Board of Trustees made this very difficult decision having considered all the factors likely to affect the shop in the future. Demand for the hospice’s services is increasing each year, so we need to make the most of every pound we spend on raising funds. The decision is not one we have taken lightly and we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has helped the shop over the past six years. Our staff have been fantastic and the Dolphin Shopping Centre and Big Yellow Storage have given enormous support. Most importantly we want to pay tribute to our many dedicated volunteers who have played such a vital role in running The Secret Wardrobe - without them none of it would have been possible. Finally, we must also say a huge thank you to all our loyal customers and everyone that has donated to the shop. We are extremely grateful to you all for your overwhelming contribution. We fully appreciate this will be disappointing news for many. We would like to thank everyone connected with The Secret Wardrobe for being so understanding in difficult circumstances. However, we are determined to go out on a high, so until the end of March next year, it will be business as usual, although we would kindly request no more donations as we want to focus on selling the stock generously gifted to us to date. WHAT IS
Gift Aid is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to charity at no further cost to yourself. It is a scheme administered by the Inland Revenue which allows Forest Holme Hospice Charity to claim 25p for every £1 that you donate. So, for example, if you donate £20 we can claim an extra £5, making your gift worth £25. This additional income really does make a big difference, so please don't forget to Gift Aid donations if you are a UK tax payer. The Gift Aid guidelines require a Gift Aid Declaration Form to be completed (below).
