Welcome to the Autumn edition of our magazine. Hospice care is…..is the theme for this year’s Hospice Awareness Week, a national campaign across the UK, which you will read more about on page 5. This will mean very different things to different people, and so it should. To my mind, Hospice care is vital to communities. I was at a meeting recently where someone suggested that we need to change the word ‘Hospice’ from a noun to a verb. Hospice care is not simply about the bricks and mortar of a building, it is about actively providing high quality care for an individual and their family, tailoring support to enhance the quality of life for the individual, and those close to them, for the time they have left in a place of their choosing. As we look to the future and ever increasing demand on our services, every part of the
As you will read, we were overwhelmed by our local community’s response to the Sunflower Garden in Poole Park and I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who supported this initiative on behalf of Forest Holme Hospice. At the end of September, each sunflower will take pride of place in homes and gardens across Dorset, with some even further afield, and that to me symbolizes what Hospice care is – it belongs to the people within the local community we serve across Poole, Wimborne and the Purbecks. How do you as a community help this to happen? By taking part in one of our events, by donating clothes to the Secret Wardrobe, by collecting your small change and by giving of your time, passion and energy. All these activities help us to reach as many people in our local area as we possibly can to deliver life-enhancing care and support, but we know that there is more that needs to be done. We believe everyone should have
equal access to excellent palliative and end of life care and that is something that, with your ongoing support and commitment, you can help Forest Holme to strive for this within our local community.

DINAH’S EXPERIENCE
DYING MATTERS In the previous edition of our newsletter we included an article from Marbellys Bayne who wrote about the importance of making the time to speak with your nearest and dearest the subject. Possibly because she about dying matters. didn't want to upset us. Marbellys said that this would help to ensure that your wishes are carried out and respected as well as saving your loved ones the anguish of second-guessing what your wishes are. In response to this article, we would like to share Dinah Clark’s experience of these difficult conversations prior to the death of her daughter, Suzie Flounders in 2011 (pictured top right).
“My daughter, Suzie Flounders, visited the hospice several times and spent the last seven weeks of her life in the Hospice’s wonderful care. When Suzie accepted that her life was limited, we asked her about her wishes. It might sound uncaring but we think she was relieved that we had approached 4
We went to the church yard because she wanted to be buried, and I asked her whether she wanted to be in the sun or the shade. She chose the sun, so we agreed to buy the plot and the two adjoining so that we could all be together. With that decision made, Suzie chose the music for her funeral ‘Fields of gold’ and ‘Let it be’. She then asked her friends if they would carry her coffin into the church. They all said yes of course. She made her will and then we spent the last few weeks enjoying each others company with everything settled. She felt better and of course we did too because she had crossed all of the Ts and dotted all the Is.
On the day, it went perfectly as she had wished. What more could you ask from such a brave and lovely girl.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Dinah for allowing us to share her experiences with our readers.
Suzie is so sadly missed but remembered by all her friends and family. Every year on 7th November we all meet and take champagne to her grave - she would love that.”
HOSPICE CARE WEEK Hospice Care Week is an annual awareness-raising event to raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. This year the theme is ‘Hospice Care Is...' Hospices will be highlighting the many and varied aspects of hospice care, and what it can mean to people, their families and communities.
Key Messages:
Hospice care is high quality, personalised care for adults and children living with terminal and life-limiting illness, supporting them to live life as fully as possible.
Hospice care is there for everybody who needs it, no matter how young or old, and supports people with a wide variety of illnesses.
Hospice care is built around what is important to the individual and their loved ones.
Hospice care is provided wherever someone may be – not just in a hospice building. The vast majority of hospice care is provided in people’s own homes.
Key Statistics:
One in three people will be touched by hospice care at some point in their lives. Every year, Forest Holme Hospice supports over 1,000 people. Hospices across the UK support around 360,000 people each year – that’s 120,000 patients and 240,000 family members. 5
DORSET INDIAN COMMUNITY

SPORTS STARS Earlier this year our Olympians landed in London following their triumphant success in Rio! However, in this edition of our newsletter, we will be celebrating out own sporting heroes who have taken on the challenge of a lifetime in support of Forest Holme.
Charlotte Wilmot completed her third open water swim in Copenhagen on Saturday 27th August. Charlotte, who was previously scared of swimming in the sea, had already completed two 2km swims in support of Forest Holme.
Brave Steve completed three marathons this year in memory of his mum. He said "It's been nearly a year since mum passed peacefully away surrounded by her loved ones, not only was she my mum, she was the one that drove my passion for running. I wanted to give something back to a place that means so much to me - not only were they there for mum they were there for the whole family during and after." 8
Members of Images Gym in Parkstone went all out for a 12 hour circuits marathon. When time was finally called the gym had jumped, squatted, lifted and pressed their way to a fantastic ÂŁ1,027 for Forest Holme! A huge thank you to owner Matt Anderson for organising the day and to everyone who sweated their way through it!
On Saturday September 17, Rachel and Amy ran the Tough Mudder Half in their wedding dresses to raise funds for Forest Holme. Rachel said “We wanted to raise some money for an amazing hospice that looked after our nanny and made her feel at home. Everyone at Forest Holme does a brilliant job in making all the patients, family and friends feel valued and they deserve all the support they can get. We rallied the troops and had a team behind us who helped us drag our mud filled dresses through the assault course.� 9

EVENT NEWS WAREHAM RIVER CRUISE Delicious fish and chips, fantastic fireworks and excellent entertainment were enjoyed by everyone that joined us to cruise the Wareham River in August! We are delighted to announce that their buoyant support raised an amazing £1,750 to support local families affected by a life-limiting illness.
SMALL CHANGE, BIG DIFFERENCE Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our ‘Small Change, Big Difference’ appeal. To date, £3,251 has been raised showing that your small change really does add up.

LIGHT UP A LIFE Each year at Christmas time, our Light Up a Life appeal provides the local community with the opportunity to come together to remember and reflect on the
wonderful moments we have spent with our loved ones and, at the same time, to make a donation in support of the hospice.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT You have been so busy over the past few months raising vital funds and awareness for Forest Holme Hospice. We love hearing your creative fundraising ideas from sewing and baking to running and wing walking - you never fail to impress us! Martin and Maureen raised ÂŁ703 for Forest Holme by hosting a garden party at their home in Corfe Mullen. The kind-hearted couple organised the event in memory of Maureen's close friend, Jan Merifield who spent her final days at the hospice.
LACIEY SHERWOOD Huge thanks to Laciey Sherwood for organising a Wear Yellow Day with her school friends at Bearwood Primary School and raising ÂŁ103.83 for Forest Holme! Karen Mabbley Wing Walk With zooms, climbs and dives at up to 130mph, Karen Mabbley bravely took part in a wing walk and raised a fantastic £725! She said "the wing walk was absolutely amazing! I loved every minute of it! I was in the air for 10 minutes which was long enough to take in the fabulous views at Compton Abbas. It was a great day and I want to thank all of the friends and family who supported me!"
FAMILY FUN DAY Expert fundraisers, Keith and Chris went all out by organising a family fun day, darts marathon, snooker marathon and disco which raised an impressive £1,040 for Forest Holme!
LADIES DAY Sarah and Sara hosted a Ladies Day at the Marsham Court Hotel in September which offered fabulous stalls, yummy cakes and relaxing treatments - along with a chance to win some fantastic prizes! Thank you so much to these wonderful ladies for raising £543 for Forest Holme. The Lord Nelson Following the success of last year’s event, The Lord Nelson played host to their second ‘Smoke on the Water’ boat trip around Poole Harbour in support of Forest Holme. Special thanks go to Anna Doyle and her team for their amazing ongoing support of the hospice! To date, the Lord Nelson has raised enough money to fund a specialist nurse for 4 months. 15
COMMUNITY SUPPORT Peter & Joyce Dean Garden Party The lovely Joyce and Peter Dean opened their beautiful garden in Corfe Mullen once again this year to raise funds for Forest Holme. Luckily the sun shone and guests were able to explore the garden and enjoy tea and scones - what a perfect way to spend the afternoon!
ART EXHIBITION Local artist, Judith Ryde, hosted her first art exhibition earlier this year which was a huge success. Judith donated a percentage of her proceeds to Forest Holme in memory of her late husband Bernard, who received care from the team at the hospice.
Chantelle Pike We just love this unique fundraising idea by Chantelle Pike! For every donation Chantelle receives, she will sew a selection of multi-coloured buttons onto her wedding dress.

Bulbury Woods Captain’s Day As this year’s captain of Bulbury Woods Golf Club, Dave Bates’ first challenge was to organise his Captain’s Golf Day. Members enjoyed the most teerific day and with the help of his wife Tracy, they raised a fabulous £3,456!
Keon & Katrina We’d like to say a big thank you to Katrina and Keon from Oakdale Junior School for their fantastic fundraising efforts! The siblings sold cakes and raffle tickets to raise funds in memory of their Nan Sandra Jatha, who received care from the team at Forest Holme.
Llewellin Lodge 7907 have generously raised over £1,000 during the past year, which could help Forest Holme provide bereavement support for 10 local families who are experiencing grief after the loss of someone special. Thank you for your hard work and support! 17
CORPORATE SUPPORT ESSENTIAL NURSING The lovely team at Essential Nursing in Poole are ongoing supporters of Forest Holme, and we were thrilled to be chosen as the beneficiary of their recent raffle. Company Director Rose said “we had such a wonderful response and we were so humbled by how many people's lives have been, and are being touched by your charity. We are so proud to be raising funds for you.”
TSB FALKLAND SQUARE They say the best things come in small packages and this is certainly true for the team at TSB in Falkland Square! Back in May 2015, thanks to your nominations, this small team of 5 chose Forest Holme Hospice as their local charity partner for 2015/2016. After setting an original fundraising target of £400 the dedicated employees began baking, running and crafting all in aid of our work. We are thrilled to announce that the final total reached an impressive £1,541, smashing their original target by over £1,100! 18
BARCLAYS Huge thanks to the team from Barclays for giving our outdoor furniture some love! They did a wonderful job of sanding and repainting our tables and chairs so our families can enjoy them all year round. JORDANS & RYVITA The Bake Off started early this year with The Jordans and Ryvita Company generously creating some delicious goodies in a competition in aid of Forest Holme Hospice. SUNFLOWER SERVICE Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Sunflower Remembrance Service in Poole Park. The service was incredibly moving and it was great to see new families at the event alongside so many familiar faces. Special thanks go to; Borough of Poole, The Mayor of Poole, Rev. SUNFLOWER VANDALISM On Monday September 12, we were deeply saddened to announce that 12 of the Sunflowers in our Poole Park display were vandalised. This was a heartless and needless act which was not only upsetting for those who had dedicated a flower to a loved one, but also resulted in a financial loss of £300 for our charity. We were overwhelmed by the support from the general public who echoed our feelings of anger and upset. Thank you to the following individuals and organisations who generously donated to cover our financial loss; Mark Newbury, Jon Murphy, Harold G Walker Solicitors, Lilliput Health and Acquit Debt Recovery. Nicola Lowe, Managing Partner at HGW Solicitors said “Forest Holme Hospice has provided outstanding care for relatives of our staff and so this is a cause we are delighted to support.” We would also like to say a special thanks to Sammy Reeves for creating a Just Giving page and to Mr & Mrs O’Donnell kindly offering to purchase the broken flowers. 23

Inspirational Women take on Cycling Challenge Marnie Penney, Carly House, Julie Ford and their group of friends set themselves the ultimate endurance challenge by cycling 100km through the night in support of Forest Holme and Breast Cancer Care. The ladies also organised a live band night at Mr Kyps which was a triumphant success and helped them achieve a combined fundraising total of ÂŁ4,919.34. The money raised has been dedicated to the late, Steve Dickens & Janice April Penney who both received care from the team at Forest Holme.
Sahara Trek for Eloise After bravely shaving her head last year in memory of her dad, Eloise felt she needed a new challenge. Ever the adventurous one, Eloise is now taking on a 100km trek through the aweinspiring Sahara Desert, accompanied only by Berber guides and a small caravan of camels! 24 30

NEW FURNITURE FOR WAITING ROOM A patient and his family have generously donated a brand new sofa and armchairs to the hospice. Roger Hesketh said; “We made this donation to show our appreciation for all the care, compassion and support given to us during the time we have been involved with Forest Holme. We wanted to make a contribution to help Forest Holme show what a wonderfully homely and welcoming place it is from the outset" The furniture has made a real difference to the waiting area and will ensure that families are welcomed into a comfortable and homely environment. A huge ‘Thank You’ from all of us here at Forest Holme!

ART AND CRAFTS FOR PATIENTS Thank you to Sara Abdelmageed who recently donated cross stitch patterns to the hospice. The patterns were all personally designed by Sara and are already being enjoyed by the patients and staff at Forest Holme! We would also like to say thank you to those of you who donated art, beauty and craft materials to the ward. The lovely Jo and Annie from Swinton Insurance in Poole (pictured right) delivered crafty items and nail pamper goodies back in August. Their generous donation will ensure that our Therapies Technician, Libby, can help our patients continue doing activities that they enjoy during their time at the hospice.
BEST PLACE TO WORK We were delighted to be shortlisted as finalists for the Blackmore Vale Business Awards in the ‘Best Place to Work’ category. Every day we get to meet incredible people who inspire us and motivate us. It is an honour to be able to raise funds to help local people living with a life limiting illness and it is incredibly rewarding to see the impact your fundraising has on the hospice. Over 20 volunteers helped us to plant the sunflowers for our Poole Park display.
A group of over 10 volunteers took part in the Swanage Carnival procession alongside our fundraising team in August. 36
Our army of volunteers have had a busy summer bucket collecting, planting, gardening, crafting and marching in support of our work. Here a some of the highlights;

QUIZ NIGHT - FRIDAY 28TH OCTOBER It's that time again! Our next Quiz Night is taking place at Cobham Sports and Social Club on Friday 28th October. Tickets are just £6, which includes a chip butty, and doors open at 7pm ready to start quizzing at 7.30pm.
TREE OF REMEMBRANCE Visit our Tree of Remembrance at Sainsbury’s (Pitwines) throughout December and dedicate a star in memory of someone special. Our Light up a Life stand will be open from 10.30am till 3.30pm (Monday 28th Nov Wednesday 21st December).
LIGHT UP A LIFE (Remembrance Service) - 1ST DECEMBER Join us at 6.30pm on the steps of the Civic Centre for our annual Light up a Life service led by Rev. Fraser Smith. Following the service, sherry and mince pies will be served in the Cattistock Room, courtesy of The Mayor of Poole. Please park in the multi-storey car park. 38
CHRISTMAS FAYRE - TUESDAY 13TH DECEMBER We are holding a Christmas fayre on Tuesday 13th of December at the Blue Boar Pub in Poole 3pm until 7pm. We will have an array of stalls and if you’re looking for that something special, a unique gift or just stocking fillers come along, it’s sure to get everyone into the festive spirit!
BINGO NIGHT—TUESDAY 31ST JANUARY 2016 Following the success of our first Bingo Night, we will be hosting our second event on Tuesday 31st January 2017.
