June Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Vivian Hussey on a well-deserved Employee of the Month! Vivian has shown great care in watching over the membership and their safety. In the early weeks of June, Vivian recognized a swimmer in distress in the deep end of the pool. Vivian sprang into action, activating our Emergency action plan and assisting the swimmer to the wall. Vivian helped the young man avoid any injuries and was assisted out of the water. Vivian brings a strong work ethic to the aquatic complex, making sure that all patrons are safe at all times. Great work Vivian and a well-deserved Employee of the Month!

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members,

Summer has a way of moving faster than we expect. It feels like just yesterday we were meeting with our team in the spring, preparing for opening day and saying, "It will be the Fourth of July before we know it." Now Independence Day is here, and we're already finding ourselves saying, "It will be the Haunted Autumn Extravaganza before we know it!"

The nature of the club business is always to look ahead and prepare for what's next, and I'm sure many of you experience the same in your own lives and careers. While we're already planning for fall events and projects, I hope you'll also take a few moments to slow down and enjoy this last full month of summer.

This is truly the time of year when Forest Hills comes alive Seeing families enjoying the pool, golfers filling both courses, children participating in our junior sports programs, and members gathering with friends throughout the Club reminds all of us on the team why this season is so special.

Club Improvement Updates

Several projects continue to move forward as we invest in the long-term future of our Club.

The Valley Course Better Billy Bunker Project has now been completed. We hope you enjoy this much-needed improvement, which enhances both playability and long-term maintenance.

We're also in the process of replacing the furniture on the Lower Patio, which will provide a refreshed outdoor gathering space for members to enjoy

For Hole #7, we are currently in the ordering process for a new fiberglass walking bridge. This replacement will provide a durable, low-maintenance solution that will serve the course well for many years. We look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses toward installation.

Looking ahead, the Valley Course bridge replacement project remains scheduled to begin this fall. We are currently working closely with engineers to finalize the design details, including ensuring the new low-water crossing bridge is properly engineered with appropriately sized drainage pipes for long-term performance.

We're also continuing to work with several HVAC contractors to obtain final bids for the partial HVAC replacement planned for this fiscal year. While these systems aren't always visible improvements, they are essential investments that help ensure the comfort and reliability of our facilities for years to come.

Planning For The Future

The House Committee has recently re-engaged our architectural design firm to begin exploring an updated concept for the Club's dining areas. As many members know, the furniture in the à la carte dining room is approaching the end of its useful life, and the wear has become increasingly noticeable. Beyond updating finishes and furnishings, the Committee is focused on improving operational efficiencies within the space, including the service path to Eagles View and reducing congestion around the bar and pathway to Dutch's Lounge.

Following the assessment vote survey earlier this year, we carefully reviewed your feedback regarding the previous renovation proposal. While members cited several reasons the project did not move forward, cost was the most frequently selected factor. As this planning process begins again, the Committee is committed to thoughtfully evaluating alternatives that address the Club's needs while remaining mindful of member feedback

The Grounds Building Committee is also working alongside an architectural design team to develop a conceptual plan for improvements to our Grounds Maintenance Facility. The current building is now 62 years old and was constructed long before the course was maintained at today's championship standards. When Forest Hills elevated the golf course in preparation for hosting the LPGA in the 1990s, the maintenance operation grew significantly, but the facility did not.

Today, the building simply isn't large enough to accommodate the equipment, storage, and employee parking required to support the operation. During every Board orientation, the tour of the Grounds Maintenance Facility is consistently one of the most eye-opening experiences for new directors because it highlights just how much is accomplished from such a limited space

Summer at the Club

Our junior sports programs are in full swing, and the Club is buzzing with activity. We love seeing so many young members making memories with friends throughout the summer.

As a friendly reminder, we ask parents and guardians to please supervise children while they are enjoying the Club. Recently, we've experienced instances of lawn games being damaged, common areas being left untidy, and behavior that impacts the enjoyment of other members. With everyone's help, we can ensure the Club remains a welcoming and enjoyable place for all families.

We're also excited to introduce a new tradition this swim season. On Sunday, July 12, our Swim Team will participate in its first Green & White Meet. Rather than holding Green & White Night before the Conference Meet, this fun end-of-season event will celebrate our swimmers, their accomplishments, and another outstanding season together

Of course, one of the biggest celebrations of the summer is our Fourth of July Celebration. This year is especially meaningful as our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary. We look forward to celebrating with all of you and encourage everyone to review the Fourth of July reminder email for the schedule of events, parking information, safety reminders, and other important details that will help create a fun and safe experience for everyone attending.

As always, thank you for making Forest Hills such a special place. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your families and look forward to seeing you around the Club throughout the remainder of the summer.

From the Board Chair by Steve Sigman

Summer is in full swing at Forest Hills, and what a wonderful season it has been. The pools are full of laughter, the golf courses are busy, the courts are active, and friends and families are making memories that remind us why Forest Hills is such a special place. There is a lot of fun to be had, and I hope everyone is enjoying every bit of it.

At the same time, the past few months have also reminded me of something much deeper. Many within our Forest Hills family are navigating difficult journeys. Some are dealing with health diagnoses, some are grieving the loss of loved ones, and others are carrying burdens that may not be visible to the rest of us.

What makes me proud is that I have watched members support members, friends rally around friends, and members extend compassion and encouragement when it was needed most. That spirit of kindness is one of the many reasons I am grateful to call Forest Hills home.

As we continue through these great summer months, I hope we all embrace both sides of the season. Enjoy the golf matches, swim meets, dinners at Eagles View and Cabana, and evenings with friends. Laugh a little louder, celebrate often, and make memories with the people you love.

But let us also keep in our thoughts those who are facing challenges, because the truth is that many of us are going through something. A kind word, a smile, a text message, or simply taking the time to ask, “How are you doing?” can make a bigger difference than we realize

So let’s make the most of summer, and let’s continue to do what Forest Hills members do so well—care for one another.

Dear Forest Hills Members,

At the time of this update, the final three bunkers on the Valley Course have been reshaped. These bunkers are located on Hole #2 and Hole #7 green. The changes recommended by our golf course architect, Art Schaupeter, have turned out great, and we're very pleased with the results.

Over the next week, our contractor, Viridity Golf, will install pea gravel, apply polymer, and complete the sand installation

The recent rain event created a temporary setback, but we remain optimistic that the project will get back on track.

Valley Green Surrounds

Another important part of this project has been restoring the original definition of our greens. Over the past 30 years, the Creeping Bentgrass has naturally crept beyond the original green edges, resulting in less-defined putting surfaces.

Our contract has begun cutting clean, crisp edges around the greens and installing Zoysia sod to restore the original green surrounds. This work is creating the welldefined look that has been desired for many years and will enhance both the appearance and playability of the Valley Course.

We are excited to see these improvements come to life and believe they will further elevate the quality of our Valley Course.

Driving Range Practice Bunker

The final bunker to be renovated as part of the Better Billy Bunker project will be the driving range bunker. This bunker will be reshaped to make it more conducive to practicing longer shots to the target greens on the driving range

Originally, the bunker was designed to allow players to hit approach shots to the Bentgrass practice green located above it. Once the Short Game Practice Area was constructed, that function was no longer necessary. However, the bunker still provides an excellent opportunity to practice longer iron shots, and the renovation will better support that purpose while completing the bunker improvement project.

Bermuda Eradication in Front 9 Championship Course Approaches

On June 15, we were finally able to make our first Bermuda eradication application after the previous two scheduled Mondays were rained out. The results have been exactly what we hoped for, and we are seeing the herbicide perform as expected.

Throughout July, the Grounds Maintenance team will begin planning the next phase of the project—removing the dead Bermuda and replacing it with fresh Zoysia. This work will continue our efforts to improve the overall turf quality and consistency throughout the course.

As part of our ongoing turf improvement program, the Championship Course back nine approaches were also treated. Those approaches are now in their second year of the Bermuda eradication program, and we are pleased with the progress being made.

Golf Course Update Continued

Championship Hole #14 Fairway

Historically, we have had difficulty growing Zoysia grass along the left side of #14 fairway. The primary challenge has always been excessive shade. Over the years, we seeded cool-season grass in this area to provide better turf coverage where Zoysia struggled to thrive

Over the past five years, we have selectively removed several large pin oak trees between Holes #13 and #14 fairways to increase sunlight in this area. As a test, we installed a section of Zoysia to evaluate whether the additional sunlight would support a successful conversion. The results have been very encouraging

As part of our ongoing, incremental course improvement plan, we will now begin converting the left edge of the #14 fairway back to Zoysia grass. We are excited to reclaim additional fairway space, improve turf consistency, and enhance the overall playability of the hole.

Course Knowledge

The heat and humidity of summer will soon be upon us, and during this time it is natural for golf course conditions to begin reacting differently to the weather.

One of the most noticeable changes is that green surfaces will begin to feel softer, and ball marks may become more pronounced. Even though we maintain consistent moisture levels in our greens each day, increased humidity naturally causes the thatch layer and organic matter beneath the turf to swell, resulting in a softer playing surface. A simple way to think about this is how difficult it can be to remove a ring from your finger on a hot, humid day. Your finger has swollen from the added moisture, and the same principle applies to the organic material within the putting green profile.

If you notice green speeds fluctuate during periods of prolonged heat and humidity, it is important to understand that this is not the result of raising the mowing height. Rather, environmental conditions, combined with the natural characteristics of cool-season bentgrass, play a significant role in how the greens perform during the summer. As humidity increases, the bentgrass leaf blade retains more moisture and swells, creating greater resistance to the golf ball and resulting in slightly slower green speeds.

Our Grounds Maintenance team will continue to closely monitor moisture levels, green speed, and overall turf health throughout the summer. Our goal is to provide the best possible playing conditions while making sound agronomic decisions that protect the long-term health and performance of the greens.

2026 Member-Member Tournament

The 2026 Forest Hills Country Club Men’s Member-Member was another outstanding weekend of competition and camaraderie.

Congratulations to Brent Krempges and Mike Macari, who were crowned 2026 Men’s Member-Member Champions. Marty Carrow and Mike Flavin earned Shoot-Out Runner-Up honors, while Joe Rector and Paxton Moran finished 3rd in the Shoot-Out.

In the overall standings, Dan Brady and Joe Fridlin claimed 1st Place, followed by Marty Carrow and Mike Flavin in 2nd, Pat Wenstrup and John Russon in 3rd, Tom McKittrick and Tom Cordes in 4th, and Brian Ortbals and John Benoist in 5th.

Format winners included Pat Wenstrup and John Russon (Scramble), Marty Carrow and Mike Flavin (Alternate Shot), and Brent Wiley and Chris Anderson (Best Ball).

The 2026 Women's Golf Championships were held on June 13th and 14th for a 36 Hole competition. The rain delayed us for a bit on Saturday, but the rest of the weekend was perfect for the two-day challenge. Congratulations to all the players in the Championship Flight and A Flight for making this a great event!

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. with a light breakfast, followed by an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for a four-man drop-out scramble. Lunch and prizes will follow golf. The entry fee is $75 per player, and registration closes on ForeTees on July 13.

Now that we have moved to grass stations on the driving range, here are some reminders.

Attire on the driving range follows the same guidelines as the golf course. Guests are only permitted on the range when they are scheduled to play that day with a member. Members and dependents cannot bring guests out to only use the driving range. For players who hit the ball far, please use the yellow limited-flight golf balls if you feel the regular range balls will carry over the net.

See the pictures below to understand the proper way to use the grass tee If this is done consistently, the grass will rejuvenate quickly when everyone uses the provided sand in the crates.

We ended May with a Regular Play event and a field of 30. Good weather and excellent course conditions allowed six players to score under par (net). Top finishers were John de Greck (-6), Ron Miles (-4), Tony Piazza (-4), Bob Reilly (-3), Jim McLaren (-2), and Charles Nance (-1).

We had perfect weather and a field of 31 for “accuracy day.” Golfers got a point for each fairway hit and for each par three green hit. Jeff Watson, Al Kent, and Don Roberts scored 13 points and cashed in. Tom Dean grabbed fourth place with 12 points.

Our mid-June Regular Play event was a scorcher My car thermometer read 83 degrees on the way to Forest Hills and 96 degrees on the way home…and it was uncomfortably humid. Nevertheless, 5 players were under par (net) with Jeff Bierman, Jeff Watson and Bob O’Connell leading the way, all posting 69s.

The seniors made a strong statement in this year’s Men’s Club Championship. Dan Miller took the top spot, with Pat Wenstrup winning the A Flight Championship and Jim McLaren winning the D Flight Championship. Also playing well were Ron Miles (B Flight Runner-up) and Tim Smith (D Flight Runner-up).

The new event for June was the Two-Man Scramble, with the Pro Shop picking the teams. Pat Hopkins drew the Club Champion as his partner and, not surprisingly, won the event! Jeff Watson/Mark Tipton and Tony Piazza/Kevin Lorenz also cashed.

Our leading money winner, heading into July, is Jeff Watson. Tom Dean and John de Greck are a distant second.

Several senior golfers celebrated milestone birthdays in June…..birthdays ending in zero If you see them, wish John Luby and Doc Schneider a Happy Birthday!

The July calendar includes a couple of Regular Play days, Flag Day, and “Stableford Points.”

Sixteen Forest Hills members traveled to Old Kinderhook in June for the fifth annual golf trip. Participants included Pat Hopkins, Jack Meyer, Dave Ganz, Dale Hoette, John Sherman, Brad Rosencrans, Steve Seevers, Scott Woley, Phil Rothern, Jeff Watson, Bill Bennett, Terry Schad, Jim Moffitt, Bob O’Connell, Roger Van Horn, and Ken Jeffries. What started as a small group has continued to grow each year, with even more members expected to join next year. A great time was had by all, making for another memorable trip both on and off the course.
