Fall golf in St. Louis is my favorite time of year to get out on the course to enjoy the change in season. This year our members have played more golf than any other year. Our rounds of golf will easily double the number of rounds in a normal year. As golfers prepare to play into the fall and winter months, make sure you are prepared for the cooler temperatures. Layer your clothing with a base layer, mid layer pullover, and an outer layer jacket. This will allow you to add or remove layers as the day and your round of golf progresses. Understand that cooler temperatures cause the ball to fly shorter distances. As we move into the fall months with greater number of golf rounds than previous years, please keep the following club rules in mind as you play at Forest Hills Country Club to help everyone enjoy their time.
1. Limit looking for golf balls to under 3 minutes. It’s a rule of golf and helps groups stay in proper pace of play.
2. Be courteous to your fellow members: wait for groups to completely clear the green or fairway before hitting your shot. We have had some instances of groups having close calls or groups jumping around other groups. Please remember that golf is a game for gentlemen and ladies, it is expected for our members to respect the game and one another on the course.
3. When having guests out to the Club, please be sure that they are aware of our Club Rules regarding conduct, dress code, cart rules, and pace of play. This will help everyone enjoy their time on and off the course. I know I am looking forward for to some great days of golf this fall and winter. We look forward to seeing you and your family at the Club soon.

Taking the Tension Out of Putting Tension can be the number one cause of poor putting. Many amateurs I see get frozen over the golf ball before rolling a putt, especially on important short putts they face. The greatest players in the world remain calm, relaxed, and rhythmic. You will see many elite golfers waggle the club or shift about in their stance before making a full swing to reduce tension, as opposed to being motionless for an extended period before striking the ball. Like many other sports, remaining still before an athletic motion would feel restricted and unnatural. If you lay the putter behind the ball for too long, it becomes easy for tension to form in your hands and arms, causing inconsistencies in your stroke. Although it is not easy to see, many tour players have movement in their arms and putter before making their backstroke. Rickie Fowler and Jack Nicklaus both hovered the putter off the ground for a few seconds before swinging it back. The player whose routine I believe can help many golfers, is Steve Stricker’s. Steve lets his putter bounce slightly up and down before taking the putter back in his stroke. It is very minimal, and you would have a tough time noticing without the camera zooming in on the putter head. Using this little motion beforehand, gives his arms and hands time to remain relaxed, and gain a feel for the weight of the club head. Since putting relies upon keeping a lot of extra body movements out, this may sound a little odd; however, next time you are out on the putting green try adding a little bounce to your stroke. It should be a very slight and minimal tapping of the putter up and down right before starting the backstroke. After a while, it will just become part of your new tension free putting stroke, and you will be rolling the ball better than ever.
Men’s Senior Golf Association by Jim Harf
jharf80@gmail.com
Four events filled our schedule during September, with one remaining outing after the newsletter went to press. The first Wednesday of the month saw the conclusion of the two-day Senior Men’s Club Championship. In the Senior Gross Flight, Ron Miles took first place with a two-day gross score of 146 while Tom Dean finished second with a gross score of 151. In the Super Senior Gross Flight, Terry Schad won with a gross score of 150 and Bob O’Connell secured second place with a gross score of 169. In the Senior Net Flight, Jeff Watson finished first with a net score of 139 while Mark Leifield finished in second place with a net score of 146. In the Super Senior Net Flight, Stan Grossman finished first with a net score of 144, followed by Fred Salerno in second place with a net score of 145. Although the PGA Ryder Cup was postponed until next year, the Men’s Senior League conducted his own Ryder Cup Challenge in September. Team Europe defeated Team USA 40-30. While each team won two of the four matches contested, Team Europe’s victory margin in its two matches was greater. Team Europe victors were the team of Alex Nowicki and Charles Nance and the team of Brad Rosecrans and John Sherman. Mark Leifield, John de Greck and Dick Buckman completed the victorious European Team. USA match winners included Ron Miles in a singles match and the team of John Wright and Jim Harf. Other USA team members included Tom Faerber, Pat Hopkins, Tom Dean and Larry Giglio. In the regular weekly low net tournament on September 16th, Charles Nance finished first with a score of net 70 while Bill Vierling (net 73) and Tony Ruggeri (net 73) finished second and third respectively. The final event of the month was a Blind Draw Low Net Competition (two golfers per team). Clearly the competition was a great success as scores were quite low for the day. The team of Mark Hawley and Gary Wimberly won with a net score of 59. Curt Albrecht and Bill Vierling followed in second place with a net score of 62, and Fred Salerno and Steve Barnard finished third with a net score of 63. We want to call your attention to our concluding event scheduled for Wednesday, October 14th. Plans call for our concluding four-player scramble of the year. As teams are determined by the Golf Shop, please notify the Shop of your intention to play as soon as possible. Keep your fingers crossed as we are trying to find a way to hold a group lunch following the golfing event in this age of the COVID-virus.
