Club Closed on Thanksgiving Day The Club will not be open on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 24th). All carryout orders will be picked up cold with reheating instructions from the Club on Wednesday, November 23rd.
Locker Room Hours of Operation The Clubhouse will not be available for Locker Room usage until 7:00 am on Mondays and Tuesdays.
A la Carte Dining Closed on Tuesdays, November - March Please be reminded that during the months of November - March, the Club does not offer a la carte lunch service on Tuesdays. The Club always remains closed throughout the year on Tuesday evenings for dinner service.
Club Shut Down Period Scheduled For January 2022 The Club will close for its annual shut down period from Sunday, January 1st - Thursday, January 12th, 2022 and will reopen for lunch and dinner service for the remainder of the month (Wednesday through Sunday) on Friday, January 13th. The Fitness Center will have modified hours during this time.

Dear Forest Hills Country Club Members, I hope you are enjoying the autumn season. It is a beautiful time of year around the Club grounds when the leaves start to change color. Over the past few months, we have strived to communicate as clearly and often as possible. Most of our focus has been on the project updates and communication surrounding the plans and processes of those items. We now want to share more about the current status of the Club’s operations. We continue to receive positive member feedback in regard to many aspects of our Club. The just completed pool season was a much improved situation when compared with the previous two seasons due to a change in approach made last winter in how we would manage the pool. We are hearing positive comments about the food quality that Chef Tony and his team have introduced. We have received many positive comments regarding the Golf Shop and member experiences with the golf staff. We are seeing increased use of the new pickleball courts and the improved Racquets Facility. Many members are eagerly anticipating use of the Short Game Area and the Bocce Ball Courts next spring, and immediate feedback on the Better Billy Bunkers installed to date has been extremely positive. With inflation at its highest rate in forty years, every department is experiencing significant challenges. Every aspect of our Club’s operations have been impacted by increases in costs, making it difficult to meet our budget commitments while continuing to provide the high quality member experience that our FHCC families expect and deserve. Costs for: labor, fuel, fertilizer, food, materials, supplies, and utilities have risen significantly. Staffing continues to be a challenge for the Club and despite talk of a recession, the most recent jobs report by ADP shows that private sector jobs continue to increase while wages surge by 7.7% nationally. We were fortunate to staff most of our service areas during the summer season with college students that were able to provide a positive member experience during our busiest months. However, our seasonal staff has left and we are once again experiencing staffing challenges in many of our departments. While these staffing difficulties significantly affect our grounds, service, and golf departments, the most challenging continues to be our culinary group. There has been a shortage of staff in culinary positions since 2016 and the market does not appear to be improving. The work force is also changing and demanding a greater work life balance. The roles that require working 50-60 hours a week are no longer desirable, adding to the scarcity of personnel to fill these roles. Historically, most positions within the club industry have required these types of hours. The club industry is embracing these challenges by investing in staff and building a stronger support team. To stay relevant and to be an employer of choice, we will need to make these investments as well. Our management team is dedicated to providing a positive member experience. To ensure we are achieving this, we have utilized contract services to supplement when short staffed in our grounds department to improve the course condition. We have also reached out to our network of fellow club professionals to help one another when in need in our culinary department. We will continue to face these challenges head on and look for creative ways to challenge how things have been done in the past. With the ongoing renewal and improvements to our facilities, we are confident we will continue to provide the expected member experience as the “Family Club of Choice” and provide an environment that becomes a year-round social destination for our members. We recognize that the world around us is ever evolving and that we may need to evolve with it to meet the new demands we are facing. We ask for your support and patience as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.

There is over $22,000 of credit outstanding that will expire on December 30th! The holidays are right around the corner and with this “free” money, the Golf Shop is a great place to start your shopping. New fall/winter merchandise has just arrived and would make a great holiday gift. This is the time of year we place a number of special orders, but please note there are still some supply chain issues out there, so plan ahead. With credit going to a $0 balance on January 1st, 2023, we recommend making it a point to visit the Golf Shop this month. There are a couple of things golfers can do right now that will pay dividends in their game next spring. First, begin to make that change in your golf swing you have been avoiding. We always have great intentions in the spring of working on our swing, but since we are playing quite a bit at that time, there is hesitation because we feel it might affect our score. Now is the perfect time. Call Teaching Professional Ryan Martin and make use of the cold season by implementing positive swing changes that will make a difference. Call/text Ryan at 314-322-7155. The second thing a player can do is to have our staff re-grip clubs that are in need. I am often surprised when I pick up a player’s club and notice their clubs either have never been regripped or it has been a couple of years. A player doesn’t always need new clubs, but they should always have good grips. It will influence the hand pressure a player needs to swing effectively. The Senior Men closed out their season with four events since the last newsletter. The first event, Crazy Tees, was won by Tony Piazza with a net 69. John Sherman finished second in a tie-breaker with a net 70 and Stan Grossman was in third place with a net 70. There were two Regular Play events this last month. In the first one, Doc Schneider won a tie-breaker for first place with a net 68, followed by John Luby at net 68 and Mark Mager at net 70. In the second Regular Play event of the month, Mark Hawley won with a net 67, followed by Tony Piazza at net 68 and Steve Barnard at net 70. Senior Men ended their 2022 season with the Three-Man Shamble. The team of Jim McLaren, Dave Ganz and John de Greck won with a net 63. The team of Tony Piazza, Bill Robertson and Stan Grossman finished second at net 65 and the team of John Sherman, Lee Reid and Jim Harf took third place in a tie-breaker at net 66. Cheers go out to Doc Schneider who won the trophy as Senior League Champion for the second year in a row. Ron Miles finished second and Bill Bennett third in the year-long competition. Congrats to Doc!!! The end of the season brings an end to my two-year term as President. I want to thank John de Greck who partnered with me in the critical role of Vice President/Treasurer during the past two years. John takes over as President and Pat Hopkins will serve as Vice President/Treasurer for upcoming 2023 season. I will serve as President Emeritus during their term of office and will continue to produce the monthly newsletter piece.

Last month I began to discuss what a great amenity the new Short Game Area will be to Forest Hills members. This article will go further in depth how you will be able to take advantage of this, and how to use the different stations there.
Starting with the station closest to Forest Club Drive, this area will allow golfers to improve distance wedges. Anything from 30 to 80 yards I consider distance wedges, and it’s tough for many players to work on. We are fortunate that our Driving Range has some short targets in that distance range, which many courses do not. Even better, now you have a challenging green structure to aim at, and see the ball react when landing on the surface. The middle green structure I believe will be a great spot for chipping from just off the green. This green structure is large enough to give you the availability to chip low, running shots from various distances. The green surrounds look to be very challenging with some uneven lies, including both zoysia, and fescue grasses. Finally, the third green will allow you to work on both bunker shots and multiple types of pitch shots. The bunkers are at varying distance and replicate the type of shots you will face on both the Championship and Valley Courses. The large zoysia area will allow players to practice different yardages and trajectories with their short wedge shots. The fescue grass will allow golfers to practice wedging the ball out of the green side rough, and improve their ability to save more pars. I was very fortunate in 2014 and 2015 to visit and learn from the Golf Digest #1 ranked golf instructor in the country, Butch Harmon. Going out there I expected to hear great things about the full swing, but I was very excited to additionally learn some great short game secrets. These shots made Seve Ballesteros one of the greatest wedge players of all-time, and Butch passed along these ideas to Tiger Woods. Missouri High School Girl’s State Golf Championships Congrats to our girl's high school golfers, Rylie Andrews, Ava Sanford, Addy Surber, Catherine Cronin, and Miranda Linenbroker on a fantastic season and for making it to and competing in the state tournament! Rylie Andrews, Ava Sanford, and Addy Surber finished 2nd, 6th, and 11th respectively, earning themselves a medal, which are handed out to the top 15 players. 9 Hole Ladies Golf News by Angie Walsh and Kathy Muschick Thank you to all the ladies who played in the 9 Hole League. We exceeded participation numbers this season! Many thanks to our fearless chairwomen Rachel Schaaf and Paula Ruggeri. Rachel and Paula put many hours into making the 9 Hole League successful and loads of fun. We would also like to give a shout out to Nick Jones who helped organized our league. The fall closer was held on October 13th. We had a beautiful day for golf and a delicious lunch followed. Sally Sprowls and Maureen Niemeyer planned a clever poker theme for the event. The end of the year awards were given out. Please see the winners below.

October has been a busy month for the 18 hole ladies group. We had a two week tournament the Solheim Cup, and Match Play Tournaments to end the season. Congratulations to Cathy Moffit on once again being crowned the 18 Hole Ladies Club Champion. Chi Kim won the Net Flight. Congratulations Ladies! The two captains were Sandy Schwartz (Team USA) and Chi Kim (Team Europe). The Europeans beat the Americans. We look forward to having our second tournament next year! Your 18 Hole Ladies executive board will remain the same for next season, but we would like to encourage everyone to think about giving back to the group. We will need to replace our board for the year of 2024. Thanks to the current board for agreeing to serve a 2 year term.
