Manager’s Report by Emma Gore

emmag@foresthillscc.net

Dear Forest Hills Members, I am honored to become your new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer. Now that I am back at the Club full time, I will be working closely with Larry Marx, our Interim General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, to ensure a seamless transition of duties. During the past few weeks, I have enjoyed jumping right back into a full calendar of activities in all departments. It is hard to believe that the start of summer is here. With that in mind, I wanted to share a few friendly reminders to ensure we have a safe and enjoyable summer season. Our membership has grown significantly over the last few years and with the addition of all the great families, we have also added many young children. To ensure that all dependents remain safe while enjoying the Club's amenities, we ask that all parents supervise their children while on Club property. All children under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by an adult or dependent child sixteen years or older. This includes the use of the Ladies and Men’s Golf Locker Rooms. Dependents ages eleven to fifteen with an unaccompanied pool privilege card may use the Aquatic Center and Swim Locker Rooms only in accordance with the approved policy as established by the Board. Our number one priority is the safety of our members and guests. While the pool is one of the most enjoyable areas of the Club in the summer, it is also one that can take the most management to ensure a safe and pleasurable environment. Because of this, we ask that you act in accordance with the following rules: • • • • •

• • • • •

No running No diving in the shallow end No rough play including dunking, pushing or chicken No hanging on lap lanes Diving Board: one person on the diving board at a time, no goggles while jumping off the board, only one bounce off the board, wait for the person in front of you to reach the wall before jumping off the board, no sitting, hanging or handstands off the board Lifeguards have final say on any judgement calls of member safety After the pools close, the Cabana becomes an adult only space. No one under the age of 18 can be inside the Aquatic Center gates In the event of lightning, the Aquatic Center will be evacuated, and the gates locked until such time the lightning detection system gives the “all clear” signal All food should be consumed at the Cabana, at the tables located in front of the Cabana, or at the tables surrounding the Adult Pool. Food should not be consumed on the other areas of the Family Pool Deck. Outside food and beverages of any kind are prohibited on Club premises

I would also like to call attention to a policy that can easily be forgotten during the leisurely summer months, the Club dress code. Our management team has been trained and is encouraged to enforce these rules when they observe a violation. All members and guests are required to adhere to the following rules: • • • • • •

Golf and baseball hats are prohibited in the Club’s indoor dining rooms and special event spaces. All hats must be worn forward at all times. Men’s shirts must be collared and tucked in at all times, except when the shirt is designed to be worn untucked. All shirts worn on the golf course must be tucked in Sweatshirts, tee shirts, tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, cargo pants or cargo shorts are not permitted All clothing must be neat and clean in appearance and not excessively wrinkled, torn or frayed Denim clothing in good clean repair is allowed at the Club except for the golf course or at any club event where the membership is notified that denim is not allowed Proper swimming attire is confined to the Aquatic Center, Café and Swim Locker Rooms. Unacceptable attire includes but is not limited to thong style bathing suits and cut-off shorts. Swimming coverups are required when walking to and from member parking areas.

We are very excited for the summer season and hope to see you and your family enjoying all the amenities the Club has to offer.

Manager’s Report by Larry Marx, CCM, CCE

larrym@foresthillscc.net

Dear Forest Hills Members, This will be my last newsletter as interim General Manager/COO at Forest Hills Country Club. I would like to thank you for the wonderful opportunity you have given me as your Interim General Manager/COO during the transition to a new permanent General Manager/Chief Operating Officer. This is a great Club, with a very active and friendly membership, that you should be proud of. The property is a real treasure. I truly appreciate the trust the Board has placed in me, which allowed me to collaborate closely with the Club’s Committees and Board members as a true General Manager/COO during the interim period. I did not feel like a caretaker but felt I was able to truly contribute and that made this position something that I will remember with satisfaction and fond memories. I also very much enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate closely with the team of employees at the Club. They were exceptional in their receptive attitude to my presence and opportunities for change. You will have a bright future with them under the new leadership. Your new General Manager/Chief Operating Officer, Emma Gore, is going to do a great job and will be an outstanding leader for years to come. She is an exceptional communicator and a hardworking individual that will face the challenges and opportunities ahead of her with enthusiasm. You have a great team of managers in all areas of the Club, especially with the addition of Ryan Schaban as Assistant General Manager, and Ali Kaplan, as your new Membership Director. I will be spending a lot of time with them in the next month to finish the restructuring and organization of the clubhouse operations. Emma is already fully in charge and the entire staff is excited to follow her leadership to create a bright future for Forest Hills Country Club. I expect that my last day as Interim General Manager/COO will be at the end of June. I look forward to assisting the staff and the Board during the next several weeks to make the transition smooth and seamless. I also look forward to the remaining projects I have been working on which will position everyone for success. I will miss you all and as I say goodbye, I give you a heartfelt thank you for welcoming me into your lives these past four months.

Golf Course Update by Scott Reynolds, GCS

scottr@foresthillscc.net

Dear Members, On behalf of the entire Grounds Team and Grounds Committee, we want to update you on some areas of the course we will be addressing in the coming weeks. Tee Top Sodding Every tee top suffering from winter kill will be addressed by adding new zoysia turf sod this coming week at the earliest or the following week at the latest. Contractor availability will depend on timing. The Gold/Blue Tees on Hole numbers 16, 18, 13 and 8 will be the highest priority. Weeds on Bunker Faces Now that we have dry weather, we can commit to spraying for weeds. We hope to have all bunker faces sprayed by the end of this coming week. #12 White Tee Box and Fairway Drainage We met with our Golf Course Architect Thursday morning to evaluate the tee location to build the new one. He is coming back out this coming week to do further evaluation. He will also be looking at other areas we are struggling with such as holes 5, 8, and 14 fairways. We will come up with an action plan to allow for healthier turf growth in the future. Better Billy Bunkers & Short Game Practice Area We have awarded the contract for both the Short Game Area and Better Billy Bunker projects. They are on schedule to start late July to early August with the Short Game Practice area build out scheduled to be completed first. They calculate a month for building the short game area then they will immediately begin construction on the bunker project. The bunker project is scheduled to take place in waves. The first wave will be the most severe green bunkers identified first so when they do start work, please be prepared to have some minor disruptions.

Scott Reynolds Creek Project Update We would like to provide you with a quick update regarding the creek project. As you know, the permitting process and dealing with regulatory agencies is cumbersome. We are following the current Army Corps of Engineers and US-EPA guidelines on creek stabilization which changed a year and half ago with a new White House Administration. It appears we will actually get faster approvals following these new guidelines which include a more detailed eco-friendly solution and no mitigation fees. We are currently working with a specialist recommended by the Army Corps of Engineers, and we are expecting to possibly get approvals this fall to proceed with the project. We will update you in the coming weeks after several additional site visits are completed later this month.

Tips from the Tee by Ryan Martin, PGA

ryanm@foresthillscc.net

To improve your putting stats, this month I have a couple ideas for you to focus on. Most amateur golfers do not produce consistent speed control throughout a round of golf. When this happens, they are commonly faced with a challenging next putt. When you watch the Pros at the top of the leaderboard, they make many putts outside of 15 feet due to great speed control. Thinking you must get the ball past the hole in order to make more putts is not a great approach. If you can roll the ball up near the hole a high percentage of times, you will remove three putts from occurring, and end up seeing more putts fall in. For better distance control, focus on your length of putting stroke, and a consistent rhythm with it. This will slightly vary with uphill or downhill putts, so for now just focus on flat putts. The length of your stroke should be consistent and properly match the distance needed. When it changes, that will affect the rhythm you need to get the ball to the cup. The rhythm in a putting stroke is created by the length the putter travels, and the speed during the back and through motion. Think of a basketball player shooting free throws using a consistent routine and smooth rhythm to their shot. They practice the same technique and rhythm for each shot because the basket is always the same distance. If their technique is off, the shot will miss long or short of the hoop. To apply this to putting, start with a flat, five foot putt, and swing the putter back approximately six to eight inches. To avoid watching the putter as you are swinging it, put a water bottle about nine or 10 inches behind the ball as a general area to go back near. If you hit it, you know that was too long of a backswing. If the putt goes too far, you are accelerating too much. If you miss short of the cup, you’re tentative and not accelerating the putter into the ball. After you see improvement with the five foot putts, move back to around 30 feet. Adjust where you place the water bottle by rolling some practice putts to approximately gauge how long your backstroke should be. I believe these two distances are most important to improve putting stats; however, you can do this drill at any length.

Ryan Martin Golf Update by Jimmy Bals, PGA

jimmyb@foresthillscc.net

Summer has arrived and we are looking forward to a busy June. It is a very appropriate time to review the reminders listed below for golf. Attire – Males, junior players included, must wear shirts with a collar and the shirt must be tucked in. Females may wear shirts with or without collar. However, tee shirts are not allowed. Hats must be worn with the bill facing forward. Signing in Prior to Play – All golfers must sign in at the Golf Shop counter prior to play. Driving Range – The greens & grounds building, vehicles, and staff are located just beyond the net. Please do not hit any clubs that will carry over the net. This is especially important when the range tee is set on the forward grass section. Divots and Ball Marks – Please use the sand bottles provided to fill your fairway divots and repair ball marks on the green. This will make all playing surfaces much more consistent. New merchandise is arriving weekly. Stop in the golf shop to see the latest apparel selections from Peter Millar, Greyson, FootJoy, Lululemon and Tail. The new equipment updates from TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping are outstanding this year. We have in-stock items from all these companies. I am happy to say this includes full sets for ladies from both TaylorMade and Ping. With so many things going on at the club in June, we encourage you to read the emails sent out via Foretees from the Golf Professional staff. These emails will be a valuable resource for information throughout the month. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the golf course after the cold and wet spring we have had.

9 Hole Ladies Golf News by Angie Walsh and Kathy Muschick We are back into the season “full swing!” If you haven’t signed up for an event yet, we encourage you to do so. They are a lot of fun! For instance, this past ladies’ event was carnival themed. There were photo props, popcorn, cotton candy, and wine slushies. The 9 hole scramble in April was derby themed. Women wore hats and brightly colored outfits. There were mint julips and roses awaiting us as we gathered for lunch afterwards. Coming up: 9 & 18 hole scramble will be held on June 2nd. Two 9 holers will be paired with two 18 holers. It’s a scramble so it’s a stress-free format which allows you to use the group’s best shot while meeting other fellow golfers at the club. Many women attended the “Chicks & Sticks” clinics. A big thank you to Ryan, Matt, and Kathy Swanson for the wonderful clinics they put on. Surely, many of us are putting, chipping, and driving the ball much better than before. Etiquette Quiz Question #2: One of the most important things to consider when playing golf is pace of play. Which of the following answers below will help keep you on pace: A. Keep up with the group ahead of you B. Have two balls (in case you hit out of bounds), extra tees, and ball makers on hand C. Strategically place your bag or cart so you’re not constantly back tracking D. Take some time before teeing off to discuss weekend plans
