Dear Forest Hills Members, I hope you are all enjoying your summer so far. As we approach the date of the second and final installment of the approved assessment, I wanted to update you on the status of the projects. As many of you know, the Board of Directors has been working hard to develop this plan since the spring of 2021. When we were finally ready to come to the membership to ask for your support of the creek stabilization work, short game area and two new bocce ball courts, we were hopeful to get all these projects started early summer of 2022. Due to the nature of projects like these in a private club where approval from the membership is required prior to funding, we can only estimate costs and timelines. We could not in good conscience approve expenditures necessary for planning, designing, regulatory diligence, etc., prior to the vote of the membership. It would have been financially irresponsible to invest fully in the projects without proper member approvals. The membership overwhelmingly approved the assessment, and since that time your Club management team and various members have worked relentlessly to obtain proper permitting and approval from necessary regulatory bodies. We are very fortunate to have made the progress we have to date with the vendor and supply chain shortages facing the world. Creek Stabilization Because of the recent changes in the “Waters of the US” Clean Water Act and the Navigable Water Protection Rule, we have had to rethink and reinvent our original creek stabilization plan. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will no longer allow hard bottom creek beds or armored walls. Instead, we will be creating a multitude of engineered rock riffles with natural and native plantings in the creek bed to stabilize the creek bed grade and pool the water, slowing the velocity of water running through the creek. We expect this project to be a much more eco-friendly and natural looking approach with the use of very large boulders and rocks to create the rock riffles. We are diligently collaborating with a consultant with nearly 40 years of experience specializing in environmentally compatible methodologies for design of river and stream bank stabilization and restoration projects. We are excited to be good stewards of the environment and to partner with the EPA and USACE throughout the completion of this project. This new approach will also require very little tree removals along the Shotwell Creek area. Surveying work of the creek was completed last week. Our consultant was on property this week working to develop concept plans and drawings for the locations of the engineered rock riffles. The USACE and our three contractors who will be submitting bids for the project were also in attendance during these meetings to learn about the new project scope. We will provide further updates to you in the coming weeks and months. Our current concept is to begin construction on the creeks in late fall or early winter of this year. Short Game Area We recently shared the final short game area design via email and have also posted it to our website. Construction of the short game area will start July 5th. Viridity, the company completing this work, will be mobilizing and dropping their equipment off that day, beginning work the following day. We expect construction of this area to take about six weeks. We plan to seed the greens by September 1st to allow for play the following spring. This will allow for two grass growing seasons, one in the fall and one in early spring. Part of this project is the redesign of the large north side putting green. We expect the impact on member activity during this period to be slim with the exception of the material staging area that will be utilized in the overflow lot between hole #10 tee and the racquet facility. The same company that is completing the short game area will also be enhancing several of our bunkers into a Better Billy Bunker System. “The worst is first” bunker project will commence immediately after the completion of the short game area. We plan to share more details as well as a few golf construction etiquette details as we approach the start date of this project. Members will receive weekly updates on the project status. We expect very little disruption to member play during the bunker project. Bocce Ball The bocce ball courts construction will start after the pool closes for the season. The location of the courts will be in the grassy area between the diving board and the adult pool. Plans for this area include the two bocce courts as well as a pool cover and safety structures to allow for use outside of the pool season. We have been working with a landscaping company to finalize plans for this area. We plan to implement bocce ball leagues that will take place in the spring and fall of each year. We are looking forward to the start of the projects to protect the Club’s greatest asset, the Championship Golf Course, as well as creating exciting new amenities for you and your families. Club News and Reminders Club Closed Tuesday, July 5th All Club facilities will be closed on Tuesday, July 5th in observation of the Fourth of July holiday except for the Fitness Center, which will be open from 5:00 am - 4:30 pm. All facilities will resume normal hours of operation on Wednesday, July 6th.
New Carpet Installation in Member Dining Areas The new carpet for the Club dining areas (The Grill, The Fairway Room, Chef’s Corner and Dutch’s Lounge) will be installed during the week of July 18th. From Tuesday, July 19th – Thursday, July 21st, The Fairway Room and The Grill will not be available for member dining; however, members will be able to dine in Dutch’s Lounge and Eagles View on each of these days. We anticipate all of the carpet installation to be completed by Thursday and will reopen the Fairway Room and The Grill on Friday, July 22nd.
Keep Vehicles Locked on Club Property Please remember to lock your vehicle while you are on Club property, never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked and do not store any valuables in your vehicle. Country clubs tend to be targets of theft, especially in the winter and summer months, and we have had thefts reported over the last couple of weeks.
Congratulations, Butch Welsch! Butch Welsch has achieved a great milestone in his life...he has just recently attended his 75th Indianapolis 500 Race in a row on Memorial Day Weekend. Many who know him know his love of racing. The Welsch’s have been members of Forest Hills Country Club for 42 years and many have seen him every summer for all of those years, announcing the Forest Hills Swim Meets, which he will be doing again this year under the direction of his dear friend, Coach Kevin Brennan.

Dear Forest Hills Members, If you are new to Forest Hills Country Club, you will very soon experience cicada killers on the Valley Course Greens. Cicada killers found our Valley greens to be a perfect habitat for laying their eggs. What they do is burrow a hole all the way to the bottom of the green where it is much cooler and has plenty of moisture. Next, they kill a cicada and drag it into the bottom of their tunnel. Once at the bottom, they lay their egg in the dead cicada to grow. What we have learned about cicada killers is they are rarely a threat to humans when they are flying around you. They look very intimidating. They look like a hornet but four times the size. They will not sting but will just try to scare you. We have tried many different things but one product we use seems to be about 50% effective

at addressing them. As we know, many kids are playing the Valley Course now during the Junior Golf season. They are going to be very frightened when they see them. Please remind the kids to ignore them and not feel threatened by them. I want to give an update regarding the dead spots in # 5, 8, 13 & 14 fairways. We are working with our course architect to create the best options for getting water to drain off the fairways. We hope to have a great plan in place for when we repair the dead spots. We know more drain tile and drain basins must be added to these fairways and it may require some cutting and filling to get water moving toward a basin. We also feel a strong French drainage system should be added where water sits and can’t get to a basin fast enough. Our contractor will begin working on the short game practice area and practice green on July 5 th. Within a few days, they will be excavating the practice green and rebuilding it. During this time there will be a lot more noise and commotion. We ask for your patience in advance.

WGA/Evans Scholarship by Mike Flavin

What is WGA? What is the Evans Scholarship? Why should I care? WGA is the Western Golf Association. Pete Sanfelippo and I are on the St. Louis WGA Board. WGA is a 100 + year old organization that organizes golf tournaments, such as The Western Amateur and The BMW Championship. One of the best players (and later, a great caddy) in the 1910-1930 era was a guy named Chick Evans. His many amateur victories resulted in monetary contributions from various people and companies. Chick could not accept the money or he'd lose his amateur status. His mother insisted that Chick use the money to help caddies gain a college education. Chick convinced the WGA to administer the scholarship (named after him) in 1930, and the rest is history. There are now 1,070 scholars at 21 universities across the nation. Since its founding, the Evans Scholars Foundation has invested more than $435 million in the college educations of more than 11,300 people. The scholarship pays for tuition and housing in the Evans Scholar House. In St. Louis, the funds we raise go to the tuition and housing of 42 kids in the Evans Scholar house at Mizzou. In the past, Forest Hills boasted at least one scholar per year for five straight years. Our streak ended about 3 years ago. I'm hopeful that with your help and Nick Jones’ hard work, we can begin a new streak. To qualify for the scholarship, a candidate must caddie 120 times, carry a 3.5 GPA in high school, attain an ACT score of at least 24, and the caddie’s family must have a relatively low income. Assistant Pro Nick Jones has recruited a great group of young men and women (Note: 30% of scholars are female). Hopefully, we have a future scholar or two caddying for us right now. Challenge: At Forest Hills we get several candidates that meet all the requirements except family income. Thus, the St. Louis WGA Board has reached out to surrounding schools and asked for their help in identifying candidates who meet all the criteria. We are creating a much more diverse group of candidates. I would say, this is the WGA contribution to the golf industry's outreach program. I thank you all for your support of the program via your annual by contribution of $50 each year which is billed to your account in April. We also occasionally have small fundraising efforts at our tournaments to pay for caddie support (ex: caddie bibs). We have a small group of caddie support members who will be presenting our goals to the Golf Committee soon. If you would like to join us, let Nick or myself know.
Tips from the Tee by Ryan Martin, PGA

A ball ending up in a green side bunker will bring anxiety to many golfers, and usually cause them to make a poor swing. Most players don’t realize the margin for error when playing the bunker shot is higher than a pitch shot off the fairway. This month, I will offer you some advice that can turn this difficult shot into a simplified one. First of all, green side bunker shots do not require the precision of striking the ball first. Instead, the golf club should strike an area of the sand about 2 to 4 inches behind the golf ball. The texture of the sand and distance you need the ball to carry will cause this to change, but 2 to 4 inches is a general rule of thumb. Striking the sand first and not the ball allows you some room to miss the spot, and still have the ball get out of the bunker. Additionally, the design of your sand wedge saves you from having to be perfect with the spot in the sand that you strike. The bounce on the bottom of a sand wedge is your friend; it allows the club to slide up and out of the sand and not dig. A helpful thought when approaching a green side bunker shot is to simply swing the club and splash sand towards your target. By doing this, you are eliminating technical thoughts that typically kill your chances of a successful shot. To practice this, draw a line in the sand with your club to represent your ball position. Make some practice swings that start about 2 or 4 inches behind the line. Focus on making divots in the sand that are approximately the size of a dollar bill. All your divots should start around the same spot, and exit the sand in a similar area. Now the next time you have a bunker shot, relax and try not to feel like you need to be perfect with your swing. Focus on a spot behind the ball and try to hit that area so you can splash the sand out of the bunker. Contact me for more expertise in becoming a great bunker player.

As July begins, so will construction on the lower putting green and the short game area. Both improvements will be great additions to golfers looking to really improve their golf game. Although distance is all the talk right now, at the amateur level there is no quicker way to lower your handicap than by improving one’s short game. At the tour level, distance is incredibly significant because their overall games are similar. They all hit it great. Distance has proven to give players a slight edge, which is significant when the margins of winning are razor thin. At all other levels, players will find saving strokes in their short game being much easier than trying to gain distance. Both are important but there is no question that time best spent will be improving from 50 yards and in. With a significant amount of credit on the books, just a reminder that all credit expires at year end. Summer is a wonderful time to use that credit when the selection of items is at its highest. Several new pieces of merchandise have just arrived in the Golf Shop so stop by early to get the best selection. There has been noteworthy play by many members this year. I wanted to highlight three individuals for their outstanding golf recently. Scott Lambert won the Men’s Club Championship for the 12th time. An incredible showing of consistency at a high level. Junior player, Trip Sanfelippo, shot a 2 under par round at Sunset Country Club to qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur. The national event will take place at Bandon Dunes from July 25-30. Junior player, Ryan Hopwood, won the Metropolitan Junior Amateur Championships (see photo to the right)! He shot rounds of 68 and 66 to finish 8 under. He won by 5 shots. As a reminder, please continue to fill divots using the sand provided on the golf cart, especially on the par three tee boxes. The course has seen improvement through this effort, and we want to continue this trend. Thank you to all players for taking ownership in keeping their course in top condition.

The Senior Men continue to play around a string of bad weather days. The postponed Ryder Cup finally took place under a revised format with the European team coming out on top. Team members included Ed Mayuga, Tim Rearden, Mark Mager, John Sherman, John de Greck, Al Kent, Bill Bennett, Tom Faerber, Lee Reid, Scott Woley, Fred Salerno, Tim Trost, and Jim Terschluse. In our member-guest outing, Jeffrey McVehil and Dan Maupin won, with Bill and Pat Bennett in second place and Phil Roth and Gerry Noce in third position. In the Senior vs. Junior event among the seniors, the older group prevailed. Team members included Jim McLaren, Tom Faerber, Jim Harf, Mark Hawley, Dave Ganz, John Sherman, and Ed Mayuga. Senior qualifying for the two-man best-ball match play also took place since the last newsletter. Teams moving on to match play include: Larry Thayer and Dave Ganz (medalist at -12), Phil Roth and Bob O’Connell, Stan Grossman and Tony Piazza, Pat Hopkins and John Sherman, Jim Terschluse and Doc Schneider, Mike Flavin and Tim Rearden, Tom Faerber and Fred Salerno, and John de Greck and Jim Harf.

Happy 4th of July to everyone! June was a great month for the 18 Hole Ladies. Many thanks to Sandy Schwartz and Tiffany Durham for hosting the Member-Guest Tournament on June 21st. It was a great way to celebrate summer with the 18 Hole Ladies. Congrats to our winners, Carolyn Cash, Ann Hoette, Chris Watson, and their guests! July is starting off with our Member-Member Tournament. It will be a shotgun start at 8:00 am on July 12th. Be sure to sign up on ForeTees under events. Don’t forget to sign up for Play with the Pro on July 19th at 9:20 am. Three members can play with Jimmy that day. Match Play Brackets are out for Singles and Team.
