Participants will have three hours to complete their choice of 6 holes of golf, in any order, on the Front 9. To make it even more exciting, players will also be tasked with catching and releasing fish at the pond on Holes 2 & 3. Points will be awarded for both the overall golf scores and for the length of any fish caught-1 point per inch. Parents may play with up to 3 children; however, teams can have no more than four players in each group. All participants are required to bring their own golf and fishing equipment, as well as a camera, tablet or smart phone to take photos of the fish caught. FHCC will provide rulers so you may take a picture of your fish’s length before releasing it back into the pond. Following the three hour competition, join us for a fish fry on the lower patio where prizes will be awarded to the winning teams. If you do not wish to participate in the competition, you are welcome to join the fish fry only!

President’s Column by Chris Swenson

christophercswenson@gmail.com

Since the last newsletter, we have enjoyed expanded services and offerings from the Club while also facing the harsh reminder of the impact of COVID-19 as a result of it impacting our employees. Fortunately, with more testing available and other learnings since this started several months ago, we were able to take the appropriate and necessary steps to mitigate the impact on other employees and our members. In this regard, I am most proud of the Task Force and our senior management team who continues to try to thread the needle of offering more amenities to members, while trying to do so with the members and employees' health and safety in mind. Again, if each of us exercises appropriate personal responsibility, we can further minimize the risk of exposures and infections at the Club and can continue to offer our current and future expanded offerings. As most of you are aware, St. Louis County's Order allowed us to further expand some of our offerings effective June 29, 2020, and we are awaiting guidance for the next phase when the County issues its next order; however, with the uptick in COVID-19 cases, it is far from certain that there will be a preservation of the status quo or further loosening of restrictions. I also want to thank all of you for rolling with the changes. As you know, communications have been extensive as our procedures and plans are frequently subject to change. We always try to make the best decisions we can for the Club and frequently re-evaluate them due to the changing facts, circumstances, and orders. We will continue to do so and please bear with us as it seems that things may be in more flux than usual as there is a chance of the county lessening restrictions, increasing restrictions, or staying the same (and in addition to complying with the Order, we will be continuing to evaluate ways to address the heath, safety, and well-being of our members and employees). Despite COVID-19, I also wanted to communicate how proud I am of our new tennis facility and operations led by Kyle and his team. What a great facility and it is wonderful finally seeing it put to use, while Kyle and his team have also given much thought and attention to the health and safety of our members and employees. We had a record number of juniors sign up (approximately 50 more juniors than last year) and the adult clinics have been a hit. We made a substantial investment as a Club in our racquet sports and it is great seeing it put to use by members and their families with Kyle's leadership, all while Kyle has had to rearrange things to reduce numbers, allow for social distancing, and have construction and landscaping taking place while the tennis goes on. Thanks for always having that contagious smile, Kyle! Thanks also to Chef and his team for a memorable Father's Day at the Club (and I should not forget golf, tennis, and pool operations as all were being enjoyed during this special family day). After a lot of training and preparation, we have expanded our dining operations, including allowing guests in certain areas (but please be sure you update your guests regarding the procedures in place that will impact their experience). We have increased our pool capacity. We have expanded golf, golf events, and golf related procedures. Thanks to all of you who figured out how to make these offerings available consistent with the Order and with health and safety of everyone in mind. Our committee chairs, committees, and our senior managers have done a great job with this. We are looking forward to our modified 4th of July plans and can safely say that management's focus has been consistent with being the Family Club of Choice. Again, I am proud of our senior management for making the best of a challenging situation and using our mission and vision to drive our actions. I hope you are able to enjoy the day and utilize the Club with your family in a safe way. We also ask that you continue to exercise personal responsibility for the benefit of yourselves, your families, and the employees. Again, thanks for your continued support and your patience as we try to create the best possible Club experience under the circumstances.

Club Reminders Have Exciting News To Share? We encourage our members to share with us the interesting and exciting things happening in your lives! Please send your details to Ali Kaplan at alik@foresthillscc.net. We will do our very best to include your information in our upcoming newsletter. The deadline is always the 20th of the month.

Message from the Pro by Marvin Herrod, PGA

marvinh@foresthillscc.net

What a great finish for our 2020 Men's Club Championship! The course was in great shape, the weather was beautiful today, and the players did not disappoint. Our B and C flights had to go extra holes to determine a champion and our Championship Flight went all the way to the 18th hole to decide a champion. The road to become the Club Champion at Forest Hills Country Club is not an easy one. Forest Hills Country Club's Championship Course can not be over powered and placement of your shots is at a premium to shoot a good number. The principal of placement, composure, and quiet confidence are part of the recipe that our 2020 Club Champion has utilized over the years. In the world of sports, when players or teams dominate for many years, it is called a dynasty. Scott Lambert's win was historic for our Club and is a significant accomplishment in the world of sports. A decade of championships is a huge feat. With today's win, Mr. Lambert claimed his 3rd Club Championship in a row and his 10th Club Championship at Forest Hills Country Club. This is a feat that Mr. Lambert would never tout on his own, as he is a humble champion and a perfect gentleman. Congrats again to Mr. Lambert for enduring the long road to becoming the Club Champion at Forest Hills Country Club. The Championship Flight was very competitive this year with the addition of a talented young member, Mr. David Kirkman. Mr. Kirkman took Scott Lambert to the 18th hole in their match and played with the poise of a seasoned veteran. There will be many more Club Championship matches in David's future. The consolation match was won by Mr. Nick Licavoli over Mr. Brett Parr. Nick's putter was strong and he did a great job plotting his way to a 3rd place victory. Our A flights did not disappoint. Mr. Mark Muschick outlasted Mr. Luis Rivero to be our A Flight Champion. Their match went to the 18th hole. B Flight needed an extra play-off hole after the regulation match. Dr. Matt Reyering won the match over Mr. Scott Hartwig. C Flight also needed an extra hole after Mr. Mike Manning tied the match on the 18th hole. Mr. Adam Greene was able to claim victory over Mr. Manning on the play-off hole to claim the title. D Flight was determined early as Mr. Tim Smith had all cylinders firing on the back 9. Mr. Smith claimed the victory over Mr. Clint Lewis. As I have said many times, the most special thing that Forest Hills Country Club has is our members. Thank you all for making this event so special and fun. Your participation and love for competition and our club is what makes Forest Hills Country Club so special. I truly hope all of you enjoy your time at our club. I know I can speak for our Golf Operations team and all of our family at Forest Hills Country Club when I say, "It is our pleasure to provide a safe, fun, and quality experience for you and your families at Forest Hills Country Club."

Tips from the Tee by Ryan Martin, PGA

ryanm@foresthillscc.net

Since we are all built differently, you should never feel like your golf swing must match one specific mold or method. However, you may find characteristics in great golfers that help your own swing be more consistent. Looking back at some of the greatest players, they all have some type of “fingerprint” in their swing that differentiates them. Arnold Palmer had excellent grip and quick tempo with a signature follow-through. Ben Hogan had a powerful leg drive and great release of the golf club, Jack Nicklaus with his classic “reverse C” finish, and Ernie Els with his effortless power. It is alright to try and emulate parts of their golf swing, but always keep your body type and personality in mind. By this, I mean if you are a fast talker and a fast walker, it is ok for your tempo to be a bit quicker than other players. For example, Nick Price has a quicker tempo than the “smooth swing” of Fred Couples, but I believe each swing matches their individual personalities. One statement I remember Butch Harmon saying was, “Never slow a player’s swing down, just smooth it out”. By this he means, if you have a fast tempo to your swing, do not feel like you must slow it down. Instead, make sure the transition from the top of the backswing down to the ball is smooth and not rushed. When watching a great player, pay attention to their tempo and body-type. It is alright to try and swing like a pro if you have a similar build. Most golfers who are shorter in stature or have a husky build would be more successful swinging the club more around them. Taller players with a thin, lanky body need to get the club a bit more upright. Obviously, this is not always the case, however, it tends to be common among successful players. There is not one mold to fit every golfer regarding swinging the golf club. So, when you work on your golf swing, do not look for perfect positions. Let it have some personality with either your tempo, backswing or finish. If your results are consistent, there is no reason to be mechanical and think you must create a beautiful looking golf swing.

Men’s Senior Golf Association by Jim Harf

jharf80@gmail.com

Competitive play in the Men’s Senior Association was finally underway in June with four competitions, three regular weekly events and the Qualifier for the Senior Two-Man Event. Eight teams qualified for match play in the latter competition, which is currently underway. The top three golfers in the three regular weekly events were as follows: Jim Harf, Larry Giglio and John de Greck in the first week; John Sherman, Fred Salerno and John de Greck in the second week; Larry Giglio, Brad Rosencrans and Tom Fascetti in the third week. Low scores were the order of the day in qualifying for the Senior Two-Man Event. John de Greck and John Sherman led the way with a net team score of 60 while the remaining teams were all within six strokes of the leading score. The remaining qualifiers included the teams of Charles Nance and Alex Nowicki, Al Kent and Bill Robertson, David Ganz and Jim McGrath, Jim Terschluse and Mike Spencer, Jim Harf and Jim Schneider, Tony Ruggeri and Bill Vierling, and Gary Wimberly and Jeff Watson. Ganz and M’Grath had to withdraw and were replaced by Jim Moffit and Terry Schad. Please take a minute to contact three seniors who are currently confronting obstacles to teeing it up on the course. Tom Evans, Joe Belew and Tom Evans would love to hear from their friends.
