MARCH 3-7, CAT® OPERATOR STADIUM

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023

Exhibitors and education sessions focus on the industry’s latest trends at North America’s largest trade show.
The construction industryʼs greatest challenges center on labor constraints, rising costs, project delays, safety risks and increasing productivity. A shrinking and aging workforce combined with limited training pipelines continues to reduce capacity and drive up wages, while volatile material prices and higher financing costs strain already thin margins. These pressures contribute to frequent schedule overruns caused by labor gaps, supply chain disruptions, permitting delays and change orders. At the same time, construction remains a high-risk industry with significant safety and liability exposure, and efficiency continues
to lag due to fragmented workflows, rework and generally slow adoption of modern technology.
As the industry continues to face these lingering challenges head-on, there is a greater push for productivity surrounding technology in construction.
Most companies recognize that digital tools — like machine monitoring and telematics, safety sensors, building information modeling (BIM), automation, artificial intelligence (AI), etc. — can improve safety, coordination, communication and productivity. Owners and large contractors increasingly demand digital deliverables and real-time data, and many firms are investing in tech to stay competitive.
As a result, while thereʼs broad acknowledgment that technology can drive efficiency and safety on jobsites, real-world uptake varies widely by company size, project complexity, and leadership commitment and employee buy-in. Larger firms and more progressive contractors tend to lead adoption, while many smaller or more traditional businesses lag behind.
Considering this framework, todayʼs construction technology is at the forefront of the industryʼs
major trade shows, especially CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026, the largest construction trade show in North America. Tanel offers insight into which market segments are gaining momentum, how equipment and automation are helping contractors do more with fewer resources, and what opportunities and risks lie ahead as the industry works to modernize, improve productivity, and deliver on a pipeline of projects.
ET: How would you describe the current overall health of the construction industry, and what indicators are driving your assessment? The construction industry remains fundamentally strong, supported by long-term infrastructure investment, sustained demand for housing, and continued private-sector development. While short-term volatility exists, particularly related to financing conditions, the underlying indicators are positive. Backlogs remain healthy, public funding from the Infrastructure
Contractors are prioritizing solutions that reduce fuel consumption, extend equipment life, and support responsible resource use while maintaining productivity.
Investment and Jobs Act continues to flow into projects, and equipment demand reflects contractors preparing for multi-year work pipelines rather than short-term cycles.
ET: What major shifts within the industry have you observed over the past year? One of the most notable shifts is the acceleration of technology adoption across jobsites. Contractors are no longer piloting digital tools, automation or connected equipment. They are integrating them into daily operations. We have also seen a growing emphasis on workforce strategy, with companies rethinking how they attract, retain and train talent. At the same time, supply chains have become more resilient, with manufacturers and contractors placing a higher value on transparency, flexibility and domestic capacity.
ET: Which segments show the strongest and weakest activity heading into 2026? Infrastructure, energy, and public works remain among the strongest segments, driven by federal and state investment. A powerful new driver is the surge in hyperscale data center development tied to AI and cloud, where multi-hundred-megawatt and gigawatt-scale projects are proliferating at unprecedented scale. Overall, the diversity of demand across sectors helps stabilize the broader industry.
ET: How are rising material costs, supply chain constraints, and interest rates affecting equipment manufacturers and contractors? Cost pressures and higher interest rates have increased the importance of efficiency and strategic planning. Equipment manufacturers are focused on helping contractors do more with fewer resources by improving machine performance, uptime and total cost of ownership. Contractors are being more deliberate about capital investments, prioritizing equipment that delivers productivity gains, fuel efficiency and data-driven insights that improve jobsite decision-making.
ET: What are the most pressing labor shortage challenges contractors are facing, and how can they address workforce gaps? The labor shortage remains one of the most significant challenges facing the industry. Contractors are competing not only with each other but with other industries for skilled workers. Addressing this requires a multipronged approach that includes modernizing the industry’s image, expanding access to training and apprenticeship programs, and leveraging technology to make jobsites safer and more productive. Equipment and automation play a critical role by helping crews accomplish more with smaller teams.
ET: Which emerging technologies are having the greatest impact on project efficiency and delivery? Automation, machine control, telematics and datadriven project management tools are delivering immediate and measurable benefits. Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics are helping contractors optimize fleet utilization, improve maintenance planning, and reduce downtime. Robotics and autonomous solutions are beginning to address labor-intensive and hazardous tasks, improving safety while increasing consistency and precision on the jobsite.
ET: How have recent regulatory changes influenced the industry and contractors’ ability to execute projects? Regulatory requirements continue to shape how projects are planned and delivered, particularly in areas related to emissions, safety, and permitting. Clear, consistent, and achievable regulations are essential to maintaining project momentum. AEM works closely with policymakers to ensure regulations support innovation and competitiveness while recognizing the practical realities contractors face in the field.
ET: How are companies adapting their risk management, insurance strategies, or contracting methods in today’s market? Companies are taking a more proactive approach to risk management by investing in safety technology, predictive maintenance, and real-time data visibility. These tools help reduce jobsite incidents, equipment failures, and project delays. Contracting methods are also evolving, with greater collaboration between owners, contractors and suppliers
to manage risk more effectively and deliver projects on time and on budget.
ET: What sustainability or ESG priorities are most shaping decision-making in the industry?
Sustainability is increasingly focused on practical outcomes rather than abstract commitments. Equipment manufacturers are advancing loweremission engines, alternative fuels, electrification and efficiency improvements that deliver real environmental benefits without sacrificing performance. Contractors are prioritizing solutions that reduce fuel consumption, extend equipment life, and support responsible resource use while maintaining productivity.
ET: Looking ahead three to five years, what are the biggest opportunities and threats for the construction sector? The greatest opportunity lies in the industry’s ability to embrace innovation at scale. Technology interoperability workforce development, and infrastructure investment together can transform productivity and safety across construction. The biggest threat is inaction. If the industry fails to modernize, address workforce challenges, or maintain a competitive policy environment, it risks slowing progress at a time when demand for construction has never been greater. Collaboration across the industry will be essential to unlocking long-term growth and resilience.

Bobcat Co. recently expanded its compact excavator lineup with the new E17 and a next-generation E20 model, targeting contractors working in landscaping, residential construction and other applications requiring power in confined spaces.
To understand the practical applications for contractors, Equipment Today spoke with a group of Bobcat product specialists about the design philosophy, key features and performance enhancements of these new machines.
What was the strategy behind introducing the E17 alongside the redesigned E20?
The E17 was added to the portfolio to serve as a”price point machine” in the 1- to 2-ton class. It provides a more affordable option for contractors who need the core performance of a compact excavator without some of the premium features. It comes exclusively in a canopy configuration, which helps manage the cost while still delivering the essential capabilities for this size class.
The next-generation E20 builds on the success of its predecessor, which

was already a top performer. We made improvements to what we felt was the best machine in its class to make it even better. Both machines share key upgrades, including a redesigned hydraulic system and standard fingertip controls, but they are positioned to meet different customer needs and budgets.
Both models feature a new hydraulic system. What are the key changes and how do they benefit the operator?
Both the E17 and E20 are equipped with a new closed-center hydraulic system featuring a load-sensing

pump. This is a significant upgrade that improves multi-functioning capabilities. For an operator, this means you can perform multiple actions simultaneously — like swinging the boom while operating an attachment — with more efficient use of hydraulic flow. The system delivers smooth, responsive control and precise positioning.
This enhanced controllability is crucial when digging a trench, working near foundations or using hydraulic attachments. It allows operators to complete tasks more efficiently
and with greater finesse, whether they are experienced or new to the machine. The improved system doesnʼt necessarily open up a new range of attachments, but it significantly enhances the performance and functionality of the attachments you are already using.
Fingertip controls for boom swing and auxiliary hydraulics are now standard. Why was this feature prioritized?
Making fingertip controls standard was a major focus for improving operator comfort and precision. Previously, a foot pedal rocker was the base option for these functions. Moving the controls to the joystick allows for much finer, more proportional movements. An operatorʼs thumb can be more precise than their foot, which is critical for tasks requiring finesse, such as digging along a foundation or carefully metering hydraulic flow to an attachment.
These controls are proportional, meaning a small movement of the switch results in a slow, controlled action, while a full push delivers maximum speed. This is a distinct advantage over some competitive models that may use a more on-off style control. We believe this feature benefits both seasoned operators who demand precision and newer operators who find it easier to have all primary controls accessible on the joysticks.
What specific features make these excavators ideal for tight-access jobsites?
Both the E17 and E20 are zerotail-swing machines with an in-track swing frame, allowing for unrestricted rotation when working close to walls or other obstacles.
A key feature for access is the hydraulically retractable undercarriage. On the E17, for example, the tracks can retract from a full width of 53.5 inches down to just 38.6 inches, allowing it to easily pass through standard gates and narrow entryways. The dozer blade can also be manually folded to match this compact width.
On the E20, weʼve improved the blade retraction mechanism.
It now uses a simple swivel pivot pin system, making it faster and easier for the operator to retract the blade extensions before navigating a tight space. These features, combined with convenient tie-down points and an automatic slew brake, make transport
and maneuvering on congested sites hassle-free.
The E20 offers an optional enclosed cab. What performance and comfort features does it include?
The optional cab on the E20 is designed for operators who work in colder climates or simply prefer a more controlled environment. It comes standard with heat, a Bluetooth radio, 3D grab handles and reduced noise levels.
Beyond comfort, the cab option includes two key performance features: auto idle and auto shift. Auto idle functions much like it does in a car, automatically reducing engine RPM when the machine is not actively working to save fuel.
Auto shift enhances maneuverability when traveling in two-speed mode. When an operator makes a turn in high speed, the machine senses the increased load on the track motors and automatically downshifts to low speed. This provides the necessary torque to complete the turn smoothly.
Once the machine straightens out, it automatically shifts back up to high speed. This allows the operator to travel quickly and efficiently across the jobsite without manually shifting for turns.
How does the performance of the next-generation E20 compare to the previous model?
The new E20 delivers a substantial performance boost. It has a rated lift capacity of 1,098 pounds and provides
24% more arm digging force and 26% more lifting capacity over the blade than the previous E20. This is achieved through the new hydraulic system, which includes larger boom and blade cylinders.
It also comes standard with a long arm for increased reach, digging depth and dump height, as well as a long blade for improved grading and backfilling performance. These upgrades make the E20 a powerful and productive machine capable of tackling more demanding jobs.
Upgrades to Bobcat’s E20 Compact Excavator include a redesigned hydraulic system and standard fingertip controls, among others.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas COO Simon Wilson shares a look at strategy, timeline and goals regarding the brand’s big shift taking place throughout the next few years.
For Hitachi Construction Machinery, a company with origins dating back to 1912, the future is paved with change. In November 2025, the company announced it will officially change its corporate name and brand to LANDCROS, effective April 1, 2027. According to Hitachi, the brand transition represents its next stage of accelerating innovation to create and provide customers new forms of value as they look to the future. The change introduces updated equipment and parts branding, but also aims to maintain many of the company’s existing core values.
Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Chief Operating Officer (COO) Simon Wilson explains that the reinvention is rooted in its long history and changing ownership structure. Founded in 1912, Hitachi pioneered major innovations in construction equipment, eventually becoming a large conglomerate. In the 1970s, Hitachi spun off Hitachi Construction Machinery as a standalone business, though the parent company retained majority ownership and control.
The company went public in 1981, continued expanding globally, and entered a long partnership with John Deere in 2000 to strengthen its presence in the Americas. That partnership ended in 2021. In 2022, Hitachi Limited made a strategic decision to reduce its ownership stake from 51% to 25%, signaling a move away from direct control and toward full independence for Hitachi Construction Machinery.
Because Hitachi Limited only allows majority-owned companies to use the Hitachi name, this ownership change meant Hitachi Construction Machinery would eventually need a new brand. Over the next several years, the company evaluated its strategy and identity. In 2025, it decided that in 2027 it will rebrand as LANDCROS, reflecting its evolution into a fully independent public company with greater freedom over capital, investment and long-term direction.
Equipment Today (ET) spoke with Wilson for a look at the move and what it means for the company, its dealers and its end users in construction. Read on for his insights.

ET: Tell us about LANDCROS and the meaning behind the name. LANDCROS was originally built as a concept, but there was always the plan that at some point it would become who we are. It’s a desire that we want to be more than just the machines. The machines are the core of what we are, but we also know that the business, the customers, the technology is advancing so fast that now there’s more than just the machine. It’s how customers interact with and use the machines with technology. LANDCROS encompasses many different factors of that technology, but also of our desires for the future.
In the name LANDCROS, there are two components. First, the LAND. Land is so important to us at Hitachi Construction Machinery. We are very careful of what we do, leaving the earth for our next generations in a better place than the way we found it. We
want to make sure that we know our equipment works with the earth and the land, we want to make sure that it’s doing so as best and as efficiently, but also safely, making sure that the earth is a continuation for us all. Next comes the CROS, which is an acronym representing the four key components of who we are: Customer, Reliable, Open, Solution.
The first is Customer: We want to always make sure that customer is first in mind. It’s not what we desire, it’s what our customers desire, so we want to make sure we’re always listening. It’s what has been at the core of Hitachi machines since the start. It was always: What do you think? What do you need? What do you like? What do you not like? How can we help you? How do we make sure that we’re providing something for you, the customer, and that it’s a customer-driven idea. Next, is Reliable. And that’s not just reliable
equipment, it’s also reliable partner you can trust in. We want to be there. We want to make sure the people we engage with and the customers that engage with us can count on us. We want to make sure that we’re there for them when they need it, no matter what that means — if that’s in a parts or customer service aspect, or “hey, I’ve got a new need and I’m not really sure how I can solve that,” that’s where we want to be reliable. They can know they have a partner that will always be there, which is important for us in this transition. Nothing other than the name is changing, so we still want to be the reliable supplier that they’ve known for the last three, 10 or 50 years. The O in our acronym is Open. We’re very open, and we truly believe in open technology and open thoughts. We know that we may not have every answer when it comes to
technology on a machine, so weʼre open to working with other companies and partners. We want to find the right solution for the customer. Weʼll work together to figure out whatʼs best for you as you go forward.
And finally, the S is Solution, as in a solution provider. Itʼs a carryover, something thatʼs always been with us, making sure that weʼre finding solutions for our customers, and finding that whatever that means, that might mean something within our product, it might mean something within their business need, but whatever that solution is, we want to be a solution provider. We want to continue that in our new name, LANDCROS.
ET: What does this mean for the organization as a whole? Nothing is changing in the organization aside from the name. If anything does change, itʼs really the freedom for the global company of Hitachi Construction Machinery to now have the ability to oversee its own deployment of capital, upon its direction of where it wants to invest, without a parent company to explain, report and drive those. The executives, the management, the factories, all of those are staying the same.
Our machines are going to stay the same. That color will stay the same. An important piece for us is the color of the machines are staying the same what we call “reliable orange.” The change of the name in decals will come to each machine, and that is a big deal, but itʼs also one that will happen beginning in April 2027.
Historically, we are number one, two or three, depending on the countries that we participate in globally. In North America, as we relaunch the brand, we are still on track for us to be one of the big four in terms of unit sales in the markets that we participate in. So for our standing in the market and where we expect to go, we have no change in our growth plans. We expect to continue with our outstanding dealer network that has come on-board over the last three to four years. Theyʼve been trained up and weʼve been engaged together in that. Weʼve grown together. And theyʼre really starting to hit their strides in the marketplace. The dealerships are at the core here in the Americas, and the plan we have for growth and what weʼve talked with the dealers about has their full support. If anything, this will allow us some quicker items, potentially, as we expand product portfolios and look at different products weʼre going to get into that will help us as we move forward. Weʼre in a phase of a change with our dealers, which will take some months and days to come through.
Our next phase is with the customers and making sure they
understand the dealers arenʼt changing, the product isnʼt changing, the support isnʼt changing, but the name on the machine and the name on the dealership will change. And thatʼs a big deal, so we want to make sure we work through that appropriately.
ET: Regarding branding, what does this mean for existing machines, parts and serviceability moving forward? And then, of course, dealers and end users.
Right now, the brand will be changing on April 1, 2027. We fully expect at that point in time, the product, as

weʼll be selling it, will transition in the marketplace. The main machines will start seeing the new decals coming through, and the parts and the other pieces on the machines arenʼt changing. The products arenʼt changing, the parts will fit, and parts will work on old machines to

new machines, etc. We will have a transition plan as we go through the parts, and will be working with the dealers to repackage and rebrand those pieces, because those do take time, and that will happen from April 1, 2027, and forward.
ET: What does this mean for product development and innovation? At bauma 2025, Hitachi introduced LANDCROS One, an excavator prototype — whatʼs next? Thereʼs always a product plan — thereʼs a deep, intensive future product plan to develop the next generation. What are the next pieces our customers will be asking for? What are we working on to develop that? So, that remains unchanged, though, as I mentioned earlier, the ability for the company to invest or to work through some different investments and different schedules for product. It gives them more freedom because of the requirements. Now, as a standalone company, it really is standalone in that the board can determine how and where investments go in, and thereʼs a large amount that Hitachi is continuing to invest in its product. We are fully expecting in the coming years some new products that replace some current models, some of our excavators and some of the products youʼll see in North America, some products that potentially are sold in other markets, that now weʼre going to bring in. Weʼre not disclosing those yet, but CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 will be the key timeframe for some of those new introductions. Even outside of that, there are some other segments of the market that weʼre working through and, while the brand change doesnʼt directly impact that, it does allow some differences for the company, as theyʼre a little bit more nimble. Weʼre really looking to invest and there is going to be some new product coming out. We expect there will be some under the Hitachi brand before the April 1, 2027, timeframe. And then thereʼs going to be some that will come afterward under the LANDCROS name. Itʼs an exciting time for us and our engineers more than 3,000 strong in Japan working on the
current product. They are working fast and furious, especially for us here in North America, because this is still the largest market and the highest growth focus for Hitachi Construction Machinery. And our success is what the company is pinning itself on and so far, knock on wood, weʼre doing well and weʼre on our weʼre on track with our plan.
ET: Are you able to share any details or developments regarding autonomous or remotely operated equipment, gamified ergonomics, or integrated tech partners?
At CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026, youʼll see a couple of these. Weʼre still not disclosing the companies, but there are a couple of those pieces in play. The autonomous side is very key and a high discussion point these days, but some of the other components just are coming in. We shared a little of it at bauma 2025, but even more with the next generation of how machines operate, how they interact with the operator and how it improves their ability to operate those machines. And thereʼs a lot of safety items that are coming along with this as well, that will help improve productivity. These are specific to some of our industry segments, especially those putting pipes in the ground. Those are some of the key items that weʼre looking at, using some of the cool technology that may not be designed by us, but itʼs being integrated with us, with some of these partners. This really pushes to what LANDCROS is: We see ourselves as having many relationships, and using the best and the brightest people from the industry, and even outside the industry, to make our products more productive and more user friendly, and adding value for our customers.
ET: Tell us about ground-to-cloud technologies. Where is that bringing in AI or other advanced solutions?
The ground to the cloud is, is because of the power of the technology, and really the AI drive that is really starting to take an acceleration in our industry. We are going to be part of that, and some of the work that weʼre doing to really bring those tools together, where they donʼt have to be embedded
Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe (HCME) presented the futuristic LANDCROS One concept excavator at bauma 2025. Developed in collaboration with Granstudio, the machine embodies the Hitachi vision for a smarter, safer and more sustainable future in construction.“LANDCROS One is more than just a machine,” said HCME president and CEO Francesco Quaranta. “It’s our commitment to deliver solutions beyond machinery in a new construction ecosystem. We’re proud to lead the new wave of innovation, empowering the next-generation workforce and redefining possibilities in the construction machinery industry.”
on the machine, but theyʼre embedded somewhere else, and using somewhere else, because you can, canʼt go anywhere now with having that machine connected, you know, and thereʼs, thereʼs even simple ones that we have on our machine today where we have what we call con site air, and this is the ability for our dealerships to connect to that machine, no matter where it is, without physically being at the machine. So think of your iPhone, the ability for you to download new software or to just dial in using the cloud, in the cell networks or a satellite network, you can connect to that machine. You can diagnose whatʼs going on. You can see if itʼs working operationally. You can see whatʼs necessary without having to have somebody to drive to that machine and connect a cable to it. These are just little things, but there are even more things this technology focus in our industry is coming to and itʼs exciting. In seeing it in action, it makes a lot of sense and adds value. And this is what some customers are asking for, and weʼre going to deliver what they want.
ET: Does LANDROS intend on growing dealer footprints, and if so, in which markets?
Today, we have 24 dealer groups and a little more than 90% of the geographical market covered. We expect over the next several months that we will have a few more of those areas fully covered in North America with 26 dealer groups. And with the brand change, weʼre investing in those dealers. But the bigger item is the continued investment that our dealers put into the business, the goals that they have, and aligning with the goals that we have. Theyʼre willing to grow with us, theyʼre willing to try different things. And for me, thatʼs part of the excitement. We donʼt want to do things the way everyone else is doing things. We want to do it the Hitachi way, and now the new LANDCROS way. And we truly believe the dealer body that we have in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, are the dealer groups that are going to take us into the future we invest in them and they invest in us. Thatʼs what you want as an OEM, and here we feel weʼre lucky.
ET: What has been the reaction so far? And what do you anticipate hearing once the rollout begins? Initially, there were a lot of questions Why? And what does this mean? and starting to address the emotional response and understanding the plan. Now, itʼs moved over into “How do we
making this as great as we can?” We have a ton of work to do to make sure that people truly understand what goes on moving forward. The Hitachi name has been on machines for 75 years. When you change that, it doesnʼt mean everyone remembers or understands, and thatʼs our goal: to make sure that the customers understand that the dealers are still going to be the same dealers, the same people that they already deal with.
This is a long road as we go forward, but weʼre very happy with where it is at this stage. I give my congratulations to our team. It was a lot of work to get here. Now itʼs “go” time.
ET: What final message would you like to share with readers about Hitachi-LANDCROS moving forward? First, I would say thank you. Thank you to those who have engaged with Hitachi over the last 75 years. Youʼll see LANDCROS in the future, and youʼll see that the company and who we are is not changing. And for those of you who havenʼt engaged with us, we always welcome people to our table, and we think youʼll be very satisfied with what we have to offer. Weʼre always going to be here to listen to our customers and be part of it. And we, all of us here, love this business. We love what we contribute to this entire construction economy we are a part of. We play our own little part. Itʼs what we love to do, and thatʼs the team we have here at Hitachi Construction Machinery.
Hitachi Construction Machinery Establishes LANDCROS Development Center Europe GmbH in Germany In January 2026, Hitachi Construction Machinery established the LANDCROS Development Center Europe in Germany, creating a dedicated European research and development hub to accelerate the development of battery-powered excavators, ICT-enabled products and digital solutions, while leveraging Europeʼs leadership in sustainability, zero-emission technology and advanced construction practices. The move separates global innovation responsibilities from regional specialization with partner KTEG, strengthens Hitachiʼs global development network alongside Japan and India, and signals a major step in the companyʼs transformation toward sustainable, digitally connected construction machinery.

Dennis Howard, senior vice president of Roadbuilding and Minerals at RDO Equipment Co., shares predictions
about how housing starts, infrastructure funding and data centers will affect the industry this year.
Industry conversations, whether spirited or casual, often unfold around the dinner table, sometimes around a nice glass of sweet tea or occasionally something a little stronger. These friendly debates among colleagues-turned-friends undoubtedly circle back to what I am hearing from others across the country and my predictions.
As I reflect on those conversations and what topics get debated, a few subjects seem to always be on the list — housing starts, infrastructure funding and the newcomer, data centers — no matter whether I am in California, Texas, Minnesota, Montana ... basically anywhere west of the Mississippi.
All these developments vary depending on regional growth, economic pressures and state or county decisions.
During discussions regarding housing starts or the lack thereof in certain states, we also wondered if infrastructure funding or commercial builds, such as data centers, would make up for the decline in housing starts.
The continued uncertainty around policy decisions, such as tariffs, generates many discussions and debates. The wild card? The growth
of the demand for data centers and their potential.
Letʼs revisit how these factors have helped contractors plan for the upcoming season and how they have shaped the industry.
Why Housing Starts Matter
For contractors, housing starts are one of the leading indicators of future workloads. Contractors use housing as one growth marker for communities where they work and live.
Housing starts — The number of new residential projects (single-family and multifamily) beginning construction.
Pipeline effect — A housing start today means months of construction work ahead, including site development, underground utilities, concrete pouring, framing and more.
Economic effect — Housing starts are tied to population growth, household formation and consumer demand.
Leading indicator role — Each housing start signals months of work ahead — labor, materials and services.
Rising interest rates, supply chain disruptions and affordability challenges slowed residential construction. High housing costs delayed first-time buyersʼ decision to become a homeowner, slowing new home construction, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Also, the bond market plays a central role in shaping mortgage rates because it reflects investorsʼ demand for debt securities. When investors buy bonds heavily, housing prices can rise and interest rates can decrease across the economy. When investors sell bonds, mortgage rates can increase. The bond market acts as a barometer of economic confidence and inflation expectations, directly affecting the

rates of businesses and consumersʼ ability to borrow money.
Late in 2025, mortgage rates slightly fluctuated due to uncertainty around price inflation, tied at least in part to questions around the price impact of tariffs on resources like steel. That said, housing starts increased in some high-demand regions like Texas and Colorado.
In 2026, housing starts will continue to face headwinds in some communities, but commercial construction will remain strong. We hope that the mortgage interest rates will decrease this year, helping to boost housing starts in communities where demand for housing has remained high despite challenges.
The 2026 housing starts outlook suggests commercial construction will remain resilient, while new home builds may rise modestly in buyer-friendly markets.
Infrastructure Funding’s Recent History Since 2021, spending from government agencies has fluctuated. With some projects fully funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) in certain states, hereʼs how we can think about infrastructure projectsʼ funding:
Infrastructure projectsʼ funding — Roads, bridges, utilities, public transit are typically funded by federal, state or local governments.
Pipeline effect — Once funding is approved, projects are planned and executed over years, guaranteeing sustained demand for construction services.
Economic effect — Infrastructure investment stimulates not only construction firms but also affects steel, cement and machinery availability.
Leading indicator role —
Infrastructure funding announcements can help contractors prepare bids for future workloads and plan for more labor capacity.
When contractors keep a close

eye on state or county funding for infrastructure projects, they can better prepare for bidding or building cost projections. Events from last year will affect contractorsʼ bottom line until mid-summer of this year — especially the increased building materials costs due to tariffs on certain countries.
Letʼs discuss how contractors managed increased building costs, changing policies and how we can plan for this year.
Uncertainty Remains Around Funding
After years of robust growth powered by federal infrastructure funding, the industry is shifting into a new phase marked by moderate growth and tighter margins. The IIJA is currently set to expire in 2026. As of the time of writing this article, there are no plans to extend the bill.
In addition, the 43-day government shutdown slowed potential decisions to extend federal infrastructure funding, froze contract payments and created uncertainty for contractors nationwide. The shutdown also delayed sharing certain data sets, like unemployment rates, that help to inform investors so they can define opportunities. Lastly, the federal government shutdown had a ripple effect on permit delays by state and county officials, which could cause some projects to have later start dates this year.
Now that officials are back in their offices and things are moving, certain details still largely remain opaque. Itʼs like that riddle that your friend shares and adamantly swears it makes logical sense, but it just doesnʼt shake out for most of us. The government shutdown, plus the tariffs, will cause contractors to perhaps juggle changing project start dates, funding uncertainty, and increased costs in the immediate future.
The 2026 infrastructure funding outlook suggests contractors can expect moderate growth in transportation and energy projects, especially in regions like Texas or

the mountain west. However, cost inflation will still likely be a factor well into this summer.
The New Kid? Data Centers
Demand for data centers, semiconductor facilities and advanced manufacturing plants — fueled by the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors and Science Act of 2022 (CHIPS Act) and private investment — drives growth. Last year, data centers emerged as a rising star when thousands of builds began.
Data center — A large, purposebuilt facility containing advanced cooling systems, fire suppression, redundant power supplies, and networking infrastructure for storing, processing and distributing vast amounts of data.
Pipeline effect — Data centers require a large area with a vast amount of energy. Contractors and subcontractors have been working together to develop sites through grading work and connecting the center to power grids like existing electrical grid, natural gas or a renewable source, e.g. solar.

Economic effect — Many debate the effects that new data centers have on local and regional communities. When a new data center build starts, it causes significant capital injection and demand for highly skilled jobs. We will have to watch this year to see how the building of these data centers affects economies.
Leading indicator role — Part of the commercial infrastructure that some subdivision builders have embraced until housing starts to rebound. As many of these projects have a multi-year schedule, we can expect data center builds to generate demand.
Emerging Bidding Opportunities
Contractors who would have been building subdivisions may be building data centers and other commercial facilities, which today are largely propping up the industry (though it remains to be seen how long this will last). Contractors are learning the job as project details for building power systems for data centers are still emerging.
Iʼve spoken to many contractors who have decided to research data center projects and try their hand at preparing bids. Some are even watching the recent news reported by Forbes that data centers could potentially be powered by small nuclear reactors repurposed from decommissioned military ships.
The 2026 data centers outlook suggests that, as many in tech debate whether the AI bubble exists or not, we can still expect projects that are underway to require continued development, including the power or roads around these large buildings.
Final Thoughts and What to Watch Contractors who anticipate and prepare accordingly for challenges, whether funding, housing, or costs, will be best positioned to thrive. While we wait for policy decisions to shake out, you can consult your trusted advisors to facilitate conversations. Uncertainty remains, but here are some places I go to gather more information, so Iʼll have the ammo for the next “friendly” debate. We do know that if you are not researching
data center projects, you may miss an opportunity.
Follow housing starts shared by the NAHB.
Follow building materials prices like steel on your preferred market tracking website.
Watch for any further discussion on extending IIJA funding past October 2026 through local or regional news stories and this infrastructure implementation tracking site by the National Governors Association.
Develop a relationship with a trusted construction equipment and technology dealer.
The continued uncertainty around policy decisions, such as tariffs, generates many discussions and debates. The wild card? The growth of the demand for data centers and their potential.

Attending CONEXPO-CON/AGG for the first time? Me too. Here’s what experienced attendees say matters most — from planning smart to making the most of the chaos. 1.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 is here. It only takes place every three years, so itʼs important that attendees plan to take advantage of every opportunity throughout the course of the show. And if youʼre like me, itʼs your first time attending. Over the past few months, there has been a steady flow of information leading up to the big event, but now weʼre in the thick of it. For fellow newcomers who are currently exploring this massive exhibition alongside me, I have rounded up some of the most valuable advice shared by seasoned CONEXPO-CON/ AGG attendees and lined up five tips to help us all prepare, navigate and succeed while experiencing North Americaʼs largest construction trade show.

If you came in with a perfectly mapped-out schedule, chances are itʼs already been blown up — and thatʼs OK. The key now is to refocus each morning (or even midday).
Look at what youʼve already seen, what youʼve might have missed and what actually deserves a second look. Prioritize a few must-see booths, demos or sessions for the rest of the day instead of trying to cram everything in. This show rewards flexibility more than rigid planning.

You may already be wearing your badge, but nowʼs the time to confirm youʼre getting everything you can out of it. If you find yourself shut out of certain workshops or education sessions, double-check what your badge includes and adjust your schedule accordingly.
Understanding your access in real time helps you avoid frustration — and ensures youʼre spending time where you actually can participate.

2. 4. 3. 5.

This is the moment to lean into the networking. Strike up conversations while waiting for demos, sitting in sessions or walking the outdoor exhibits. Talk to exhibitors, contractors, manufacturers, educators and members of the press. Donʼt wait for a formal introduction or scheduled meeting. Some of the best conversations at CONEXPO-CON/ AGG happen unexpectedly — and often lead to the most valuable takeaways.

Education sessions, panels and workshops fill up fast. If you want a seat, arrive early. If you make it in and realize the session isnʼt delivering what you hoped, donʼt feel obligated to stay.
Time is your most limited resource here. Use it where youʼre learning something new, gaining insight or walking away with ideas you can actually apply.
Yes, youʼre here for work — but that doesnʼt mean you canʼt enjoy the experience. Between the contests, demos, interactive displays and yes, the free swag, thereʼs a lot happening beyond straight business.
At the same time, pace yourself. Eat, hydrate, take short breaks and donʼt try to do late-night Vegas if you want to be functional the next morning. CONEXPO-CON/AGG is a marathon, not a sprint.
If youʼre feeling overwhelmed, just know youʼre not alone. Most of us — especially first-timers — are figuring it out as we go. Take advice from those whoʼve been here before, trust your instincts and focus on what matters most to you.
Good luck — and if youʼre reading this between halls or meetings, Iʼll see you on the show floor.
