Supporting camps through procurement Partnership spotlight with

For seasonal operations like summer camps, managing food costs while maintaining quality and consistency is a constant balancing act. For Geoff Park of Camp Summit, that balance has been strengthened through a long-standing partnership with Foodbuy Canada.

Over the past seven years, Foodbuy has worked alongside Camp Summit to help optimize purchasing while preserving the systems and supplier relationships that matter most to camp operations.

Protecting What Works While Adding Value

One of the biggest advantages for camps partnering with Foodbuy is flexibility.

Rather than requiring operational changes or supplier disruption, Foodbuy enables camps to retain their existing ordering structures, suppliers, and internal systems. At the same time, rebate programs are layered in strategically to drive additional value.

“Foodbuy has enabled camps to retain the exact ordering structure, suppliers, and systems while integrating strong rebate programs,” says Geoff. “The ability to have Foodbuy collaborating with your camp to find items within your existing supplier options that maximize your benefits literally creates a passive rebate program that is totally hands off.”

For busy camp operators, especially those managing short, high-volume seasons, that simplicity matters. The result is

Geoff Park, Camp

Summit

a program that works quietly in the background, generating savings without adding administrative burden.

A Measurable Impact on Food Costs

For Camp Summit, the impact has been tangible.

Over the past seven years, the integration of rebate optimization and strategic supplier collaboration has had a meaningful positive effect on overall food costs. In an environment where margins can be tight and budgets carefully managed, even incremental improvements compound significantly over time.

The approach is not about overhauling operations. It is about refining purchasing decisions within existing frameworks to unlock hidden value.

A Win for Individual Camps and the Industry

Beyond individual savings, Foodbuy’s support extends to the broader camp community.

“The ancillary benefit of Foodbuy helping support our provincial camps association, in addition to individual camp savings, makes the program a win win for everyone,” Geoff notes.

By collaborating with camp associations at the provincial level, Foodbuy strengthens the ecosystem as a whole, supporting education, advocacy, and long-term sustainability for camps across the region.

This dual impact model, helping both individual operators and the wider association, reinforces the idea that procurement can be a strategic partnership rather than simply a transactional service.

Geoff Park, Camp Summit

Together we are strengthening the camping industry

Foodbuy is proud to partner with numerous camping associations across Canada. These partnerships allow camps to access national buying power, cost savings, and reliable suppliers—supporting more efficient operations without compromising quality.

Looking Ahead

Like any strong partnership, there is always room to evolve.

Geoff sees additional opportunity in enhancing communication and planning support, particularly during the off season. Greater clarity around each camp’s primary Foodbuy contact and more proactive winter season engagement, including reviewing past purchasing data and supporting seasonal projections, could help camps maximize benefits before the busy season begins.

Proactive planning, especially for seasonal operations, can translate directly into stronger financial outcomes.

Strengthening Camps Through Partnership

For camps like Camp Summit, the Foodbuy partnership demonstrates how procurement can deliver meaningful savings without disrupting established systems. By preserving operational familiarity while layering in rebate optimization and association support, Foodbuy helps camps focus on what matters most, delivering safe and enriching experiences for campers.

As camps continue to navigate rising costs and operational pressures, strategic partnerships that provide passive value, industry support, and forwardlooking planning will remain essential to long term success.

Thriving in 2026

Trends, Opportunities, and Smart Solutions for Camps

As we look ahead to the 2026 camp season, change is in the air and that’s not a bad thing. From new technologies to evolving staff expectations and creative menu planning, camps have exciting opportunities to strengthen operations and deliver unforgettable experiences. Foodbuy spoke to Matt Wilfrid, Executive Director of the Canadian Camps Association to better understand what’s shaping the industry and how you can stay ahead.

Adapting to Nature’s Curveballs

Canadian camps have always embraced the outdoors, but recent summers have introduced new challenges such as, wildfires, smoke, flooding, and sudden heat waves. Camps are responding with practical adjustments that keep kids safe and comfortable while preserving the magic of camp. As Matt Wilfrid explains, camps are considering “creating more shade spaces, cooling areas, and even buying air purifiers for smoke days” to adapt to changing conditions.

These strategies include:

• Flexible programming: Extending rest hours or adding indoor activities during peak heat.

• Comfort upgrades: More shaded spaces and cooling areas for campers.

• Air quality solutions: Portable purifiers for smoky days.

These changes aren’t just about safety, they’re about ensuring campers can enjoy their experience no matter the forecast. It’s a testament to the resilience and creativity that defines the camp community.

Staffing: Building Stronger Teams

Staffing is evolving and that’s a good thing. Gen Z counsellors are bringing fresh energy and higher expectations around wellness and work-life balance, and camps are responding by rethinking how they support their teams. Competitive pay, flexible scheduling, access to mental health resources such as CCA’s partnership with Advica for affordable counselling, and intentional efforts to build positive, inclusive cultures all play a role. Even small gestures, like personalized snacks or public shout-outs for great work, can make a meaningful difference. When staff feel heard, supported, and valued, they’re far more likely to show up at their best for campers.

Technology and AI: Your New Best Friend

Technology isn’t replacing the magic of camp, it’s freeing up time for directors to focus on what matters most: relationships and experiences and AI tools can help in many ways including; drafting emails and streamlining communications; generating allergy-friendly menus based on pantry inventory and suggesting creative programming ideas, as examples.

Matt Wilfrid, Executive Director, Canadian Camps Association

As Wilfrid explains, “Using tools helps camp directors get back to the things that really move their mission forward. They’re good at building relationships and making families feel their kids are safe, and AI can’t do that. But it can take care of the backand-forth emails and planning so directors can focus on what matters most.”

Beyond AI, activity scheduling software and registration platforms are making operations smoother. And don’t forget that association partnerships often mean discounts on investments.

Food Service: Comfort, Culture, and Creativity

Food is more than fuel - it’s a cornerstone of the camp experience. Mealtime is where campers connect, share stories, and feel at home. Today, food service is evolving in three key ways:

• Managing Allergies and Dietary Needs: The rise in food allergies and intolerances means kitchens must be nimble. AI tools can help by quickly generating safe recipes based on pantry inventory and dietary restrictions - saving operators time and stress.

• Embracing Cultural Diversity: Camps are welcoming increasingly diverse camper populations. Food is a powerful way to make every child feel included. Consider these strategies:

• Survey camper demographics before the season to identify cultural preferences.

• Introduce global flavours - alongside traditional camp favourites.

• Offer familiar comfort foods for campers far from homesimple changes can make a big difference.

As Wilfrid shared, “Food is so connected to people’s feeling of welcome and being home. It’s an opportunity for camps to meet kids and staff where they’re at.”

• Simplifying for Kitchen Staff: Many camp kitchens are staffed by cooks, not professional chefs. That’s where Foodbuy’s Camp Buyer Guide shines. It curates products ideal for camp menus and highlights products for cost efficiencies and rebate structures.

Pair this with cultural awareness, and you’ll have menus that are inclusive, budget-friendly, and stress-free.

The Big Picture: Why Camps Matter

Camps aren’t just summer fun, they’re economic and social powerhouses. Preliminary CCA (Canadian Camps Association) data shows camps spend an average of $126,000 annually on food, totaling an estimated $130 million industry wide. Add lodging, insurance, and staffing, and the sector easily reaches multi-billion-dollar impact.

This scale strengthens advocacy efforts and reminds policymakers that camps are essential - not only for childhood development but for local economies.

Matt adds, “At the end of the day, camps are one of the few places where kids can unplug, connect, and grow. That’s something worth protecting and celebrating.”

What is a GPO?

Camps look to Foodbuy to help manage cost increases

time saver cost reducer purchasing support

Group purchasing organizations (GPOs) are not something that most people are familiar with unless you’ve worked in purchasing or if you’re a GM, chef, or seasoned camp manager. However, the GPO business model has been around for decades, saving operators money. Let’s look at Foodbuy, Canada’s leading foodservice and hospitality GPO.

If you’ve shopped at Costco you understand the GPO concept at the retail level. Costco buys massive volumes and its manufacturing partners offer a discounted selling price in return for high sales volume. Costco passes along that savings to their members.

That’s how it works in the Business to Business (B2B) sector as well, except on a much larger scale. Foodbuy is North America’s largest Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) and partners with over 450 suppliers with contracted purchasing agreements on over 36,000 items in Canada alone. When the purchasing volume of all of Foodbuy’s Members is combined, manufacturers are prepared to provide price discounts or rebates, in return for that volume. That is where Foodbuy Members benefit, by receiving price discounts or earning rebates on any item that Foodbuy has contracts with the manufacturers on.

It makes sense to work with a GPO for many reasons, which is why it’s such a prevalent practice across so many businesses. It’s a time saver, a cost reducer, and a support for those Members looking for help with their purchasing requirements. This is especially applicable for the Camp sector where timelines are compressed and part time buyers may not have advanced procurement skills. Foodbuy is your go-to expert for purchasing. And, it is free to join as Foodbuy gets paid by the manufacturers for bringing them added sales volume.

Foodbuy works with camps across Canada, and our dedicated account team has the knowledge and expertise to help camps save money on purchases, select the items that will optimize their purchasing and save time sourcing needed items.

If you haven’t started saving with Foodbuy yet, what are you waiting for? Learn more about Foodbuy at foodbuy.ca or email us at info@foodbuy.ca to learn how Foodbuy can help your business.

Top 5 Qs about GPOs

Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) are becoming essential for camp, foodservice, hospitality, long-term care, education, and club operations across Canada. If you’re exploring how a GPO like Foodbuy Canada can help reduce costs and improve procurement efficiency, here are the top questions operators ask.

1. What is a GPO?

A Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) leverages the buying power of thousands of businesses to negotiate stronger pricing, better supplier programs, and broader product coverage. By joining a GPO, Canadian operators gain access to:

• Competitive contracted pricing

• National supplier programs

• Rebates and incentives

• A wider range of SKUs and brands

GPOs operate across many sectors including camps, golf & leisure clubs, healthcare, foodservice, hospitality, and more.

2. How does a GPO work?

A GPO negotiates contracts with hundreds of suppliers and manufacturers on behalf of its members.

Members benefit from:

• Lower net pricing

• Post-purchase rebates

• Stronger contract compliance

• Access to products that might otherwise be unavailable or cost-prohibitive

For Canadian operators, this means leveraging Foodbuy’s national buying power to secure pricing and programs that individual businesses simply couldn’t negotiate alone.

3. What services do GPOs provide?

Beyond cost savings, leading procurement organizations offer full-service support to improve operational efficiency. Foodbuy Canada provides:

Sourcing & Procurement Support

Help identify alternative products, cost-effective SKUs, or solutions that meet specific operational needs.

Distribution Management

Canadian operators often work with multiple distributors. Foodbuy helps streamline relationships, troubleshoot pricing issues, and ensure contracted products are in stock.

Purchasing Optimization

Data-driven insights to uncover:

• SKU rationalization opportunities

• Category conversions

• Cost-saving substitutions

Culinary & Menu Solutions

Foodbuy’s account managers and chefs support menu design, labour-saving product recommendations, and waste-reduction strategies—critical for Canadian operators facing labour shortages.

4. How much can I save?

Savings vary depending on:

• Your existing supplier mix

• Program participation

• SKU usage

• Adoption of procurement services

Most Canadian operators see meaningful savings through a combination of lower pricing, rebates, menu optimization, and improved distribution and purchasing efficiency. Foodbuy provides personalized savings assessments to show the potential impact.

5. Do I need to change suppliers when I join a GPO?

Not always. It depends on the GPO. Some require exclusive supplier use; others offer flexibility. Foodbuy Canada partners with hundreds of national and regional suppliers, giving members options that work with their existing operation. In many cases, businesses can keep purchasing from their preferred suppliers and distributors while still benefiting from contracted pricing and programs. When changes are recommended, Foodbuy provides analysis and transition support to ensure operators make informed decisions.

Unlocking value

How a Foodbuy Account Manager transforms your camp’s bottom line

Running a successful camp means juggling countless priorities; guest experience, operational efficiency, and financial performance. Amid these demands, food and beverage programs often operate on razor-thin margins, sometimes even at a loss. That’s where a Foodbuy account manager steps in, turning challenges into opportunities and ensuring your purchasing strategy works as hard as you do.

Your Strategic Partner in Savings

Foodbuy account managers are more than purchasing advisors; they’re strategic partners. Their first mission? To uncover hidden value in your current buying habits. By analyzing purchasing data, they identify simple, high-impact changes that maximize rebates without disrupting your operations. Think likefor-like product switches that deliver immediate savings without requiring a change in operations or your menu.

For camps operating at net-zero or negative margins on food and beverage, these optimizations can be game-changing. A few smart adjustments can move your operation into positive territory, creating measurable ROI that supports your camp’s overall financial health.

Data-Driven Insights You Can Trust

Every Foodbuy member benefits from robust data collection and expert analysis. Account managers dive deep into your purchasing patterns to recommend cost-effective and rebate-eligible products and programs tailored to your needs. They also provide market intelligence - commodity reports and price change insights, so you understand why costs fluctuate and how to plan accordingly. When coffee prices increase due to a poor Brazilian harvest for instance, you’ll know why the price increase is happening and how to mitigate the impact.

Your Advocate with Distributors and Manufacturers

Navigating distributor relationships can be complex. When products are short shipped or you receive unexpected substitutions, your kitchen and your budget can be disrupted. Foodbuy account managers can act as mediators with your distributor partners, leveraging the strength of a $4 billion organization to resolve issues quickly and effectively. Foodbuy account managers also serve as conduits for innovation, introducing you to new products and programs from leading manufacturers, often before these are communicated to the broader market.

Beyond Food: A World of Possibilities

Despite the name, Foodbuy isn’t just about food. Account managers connect members to a wide range of non-food and professional services programs, including pest control services, cleaning and hygiene products, to bedding supplies and mattresses. Whether you are sourcing lawn maintenance equipment or exploring heat and serve culinary options, your account manager ensures you receive the best value possible. Before making any major purchases, contact your Foodbuy account manager. They will help you confirm competitive pricing and identify available rebates, giving you confidence that you are securing the best deal for your camp.

Easy Wins and Long-Term Gains

The approach is simple: start with quick wins, then build toward strategic growth. Initial recommendations often focus on highvolume items like garbage can liners, chicken tenders, fries, and beverages - products that dominate camp foodservice purchases. From there, your Foodbuy account manager can help you explore broader opportunities, including kitchen appliances, mattresses, and even lawn care equipment.

In today’s competitive landscape, every dollar counts.

Foodbuy account managers bring expertise, relationships, and insights that individual camps simply can’t access alone. They amplify your buying power, streamline operations, and unlock savings that strengthen your bottom line - all while freeing you to focus on what matters most: delivering an exceptional member experience.

A Foodbuy account manager isn’t just a resource - they’re your secret weapon for smarter purchasing, stronger margins, and a more profitable future.

Why camps benefit from partnering with a broadline distributor

Running a camp kitchen is no small task. From feeding hundreds of campers daily to managing inventory and ensuring food safety, operators need solutions that simplify operations without sacrificing quality. One of the most effective strategies for achieving this is partnering with a broadline foodservice distributor. A distributor acts as a single point of contact for most of your food and supply needs, creating efficiency and cost savings while helping you access rebates through Foodbuy. Here’s how:

How Distributors Help Camps Earn Rebates

Foodbuy negotiates rebates with manufacturers, but those rebates can only be paid when purchases are tracked through a distributor. Why? Because distributors share purchasing data with Foodbuy, creating a clear record of what products you’ve bought. This data exchange ensures you receive the rebates you’ve earned, without extra paperwork or hassle. Simply put: buy through a distributor, and you unlock rebate dollars that go straight back to your camp’s bottom line.

Key Benefits of Working with a Distributor Streamlined Procurement and Logistics

Distributors consolidate products from multiple manufacturers into one scheduled delivery. This means fewer trucks arriving at your camp, less time spent receiving orders, and reduced handling costs.

Avoid Risky Town Runs

Without a distributor, camps often resort to driving

into the nearest town to buy supplies. This approach can compromise food safety if product temperatures aren’t maintained during transport, and it takes valuable staff time away from camp operations. Partnering with a distributor eliminates these risks by delivering everything you need directly to your camp - safe, fresh, and on schedule.

Access to a Wide Range of Products

From fresh produce and frozen foods to dry goods and even non-food essentials like plates and napkins, distributors offer a “one-stop shop.”

Consistent Quality and Reliability

Reputable distributors maintain strict quality control and cold chain integrity, ensuring your food arrives fresh and safe. This consistency helps you deliver the high standards campers expect.

Cost and Operational Efficiency

By managing warehousing, storage, and transportation, distributors help reduce your overhead and minimize risks like spoilage or stock shortages.

Flexibility and Adaptability

Strong distributor relationships help you navigate challenges like supply chain disruptions or seasonal demand spikes quickly and effectively.

Support for Local Sourcing and Sustainability

Some distributors prioritize local sourcing, giving you fresher ingredients and helping reduce your carbon footprint - perfect for camps that value sustainability. Partnering with a foodservice distributor isn’t just about convenience, it’s a strategic move that improves efficiency, reduces costs, and ensures you earn valuable rebates through Foodbuy. By consolidating your purchasing and leveraging both your distributor’s and Foodbuy Account Management expertise, your camp can focus on what matters most: creating unforgettable experiences for campers.
