THE MOST DYNAMIC SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES & EXPORT PROSSESSING ZONES OF MALAYSIA:
Malaysia has a long and successful history of utilizing special economic zones (SEZs) and export processing zones (EPZs), also known as Free Zones, as integral components of its industrialization and export-oriented growth strategies. These geographically delimited areas offer unique regulatory and fiscal frameworks, distinct from the national regulations, to attract investment, generate employment, foster technology transfer, and boost exports. Historical development and evolution: Early Stages (1970s): Malaysia’s journey with SEZs began in the early 1970s with the establishment of Export Processing Zones (EPZs) under the Free Trade Zone Act of 1971. These zones, initially driven by the Investment Incentive Act of 1968, focused on attracting labour-intensive, export-oriented industries, particularly in the nascent electronics sector. Shift towards higher valueadded activities: Over time, as Malaysia’s economy matured and global competition intensified, the focus shifted from purely labour-intensive manufacturing to higher value-added activities and technology-intensive industries within these zones. Penang’s technology cluster, for instance, became a prominent hub for semiconductor manufacturing.
Expansion of scope beyond manufacturing: The concept of SEZs expanded beyond just manufacturing to encompass broader economic development goals including promoting regional development, facilitating technology transfer, and creating linkages with domestic industries. Recent Developments: The ongoing development of the
Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is a prime example of Malaysia’s continued reliance on SEZs to drive economic growth and regional integration.
Legal framework and incentives: The Free Trade Zone Act 1990: The legal framework for Free Zones (including EPZs) in Malaysia is primarily governed by the Free Trade Zone Act of 1990. This legislation facilitates duty-free trade, simplifies customs procedures, and provides various incentives for businesses operating within these zones. Investment Incentives Act 1968:While superseded by subsequent legislation, the Investment Incentives Act of 1968 laid the groundwork for promoting industrialization and attracting foreign investment. Tax Relief and Duty Exemptions: Businesses within Malaysian Free Zones benefit from significant tax advantages, including exemptions from customs duties, excise taxes, and sales taxes on goods and services. Simplified
Procedures and Infrastructure Support: Beyond tax benefits, companies operating within Free Zones also enjoy streamlined regulatory processes, simplified approvals, and access to welldeveloped infrastructure such as transportation networks, utilities, and communication systems. Specific Incentives for JS-SEZ: The recently launched Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone offers even more attractive incentives, including a special corporate tax
rate of 5% for qualifying companies for 15 years, a reduced income tax rate of 15% for eligible knowledge workers for 10 years, and import duty exemptions on raw materials and components.
Role in industrialization and export diversification:
Export-Oriented Manufacturing: Malaysia’s SEZs and EPZs have been
instrumental in promoting manufactured exports, especially in the electronics sector. Diversification and High-Tech Industries: They have supported export diversification into higher-value and technology-intensive industries like electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): The attractive incentives and favourable business environment within the zones have successfully attracted significant foreign direct investment (FDI), boosting economic activity and employment.
Socio-economic impact and challenges: Job Creation: The establishment of SEZs has generated numerous employment opportunities, particularly in manufacturing. Skill Development:While the initial focus was on attracting labour-intensive industries, there has been a growing emphasis on skill development and attracting knowledge workers to facilitate technology transfer and industrial upgrading. Backward Linkages: While there have been some concerns about the limited backward linkages between SEZ enterprises and local suppliers in the early stages, recent policies and initiatives aim to strengthen these linkages and foster greater integration with the domestic economy.
Sustainable Development: Moving forward, there is a greater emphasis on promoting environmentally sustainable practices within SEZs and addressing concerns related to land acquisition, environmental impact, and equitable regional development.
Future outlook: The Malaysian government is committed to further enhancing the competitiveness and attractiveness of its SEZs through continuous policy reforms and targeted incentives. The ongoing development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone exemplifies the future direction, which prioritizes:
Targeted Incentives: Tailored incentives for strategic sectors like electronics, medical devices, aerospace, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. Talent Development: Measures to attract and retain skilled workers, including enhanced visa schemes and industry-relevant training programs. Connectivity and Ease of Doing Business: Improving infrastructure, logistics, and streamlining bureaucratic processes to facilitate cross-border trade and investment. ESG Integration: Promoting sustainability and environmentally friendly practices within the zones.
With the Most proactive Government and effective Governance, Malaysia has been continuously Marching towards upliftment of their Economic Status and attract Investments and Investors from all over the world to capitalise the exclusive potentials available in Malaysia. And the Government of Malaysia have also been progressively, meticulously continuously and strategically leveraging the strengths of its SEZs and EPZs and adapting to evolving global economic dynamics, Malaysia aims to solidify its position as a leading investment destination and a key player in the regional and global economy.

Syomir Izwa’s Le Chic Raya 2025
When Parisian Poise Meets Malay Tradition
Malaysia’s fashion scene welcomes the festive season with a dash of Parisian flair this year, courtesy of renowned designer Syomir Izwa and his latest Raya collection, Le Chic Raya 2025. Infusing timeless French elegance with deeply rooted Malay silhouettes, the collection is a nostalgic yet refreshingly modern celebration of style, confidence, and cultural storytelling. Le Chic Raya 2025 pays homage to the golden era of 1940s–1950s Frenchinspired Hollywood glamour, reinterpreting classics like the Baju Kurung and Baju Kebaya through a refined Parisian lens.
Clean tailoring, soft drapes and a palette built on understated luxury set the tone, while signature French motifs—polka dots and Toile de Jouy prints—are revived with clever 3D embellishments that walk the line between heritage and haute couture. The result is a collection that feels equally at home on the cobblestone streets of Montmartre as it does in a Malaysian Raya open house. Ahead of its official debut at Zaloraya 2025, the collection captured attention not only for its designs but also for its atmospheric campaign imagery. Set against Parisian backdrops reminiscent of film noir cinema and musical theatre classics, the visuals exude cinematic nostalgia whilst cleverly anchoring the pieces in modern-day relevance—proof that Syomir Izwa’s storytelling extends well beyond the seams.
With over two decades in fashion, Syomir credits his brand’s longevity to storytelling, versatility, and inclusivity. Bold use of colours, cross-cultural references and a deep respect for history remain his design hallmarks—yet it is his ability to listen and evolve that keeps Syomirizwa Gupta ahead of trends. From embracing diverse body types to staying attuned to global shifts in fashion, the brand continues to push the boundaries of what modern Malaysian womenswear can represent.
At its heart, Le Chic Raya 2025 is about making dreams wearable. It invites women to celebrate their individuality, to move with grace, and to wear their confidence like couture. Standout pieces range from draped kebayas with elegant French pleats to Syomir’s current personal favourite: a bold oversized high-low top paired with high-waisted giant polka-dot pants—a sophisticated statement look that perfectly captures the collection’s essence.
As Malaysia’s fashion industry enters what Syomir calls a “renaissance” marked by diversity and international polish, Le Chic Raya 2025 stands as a shining example: proof that when tradition embraces evolution, the result is timeless, empowering, and utterly chic.

Anaabu™ Returns With ‘Kongsi Masa
“Kongsi masa, hey! Kongsi rasa, rasa hey, Dari subuh ke senja, purnama ke suria…”
With poetic flair and soulful intention, ANAABU Malaysia reawakens its philosophy of time and togetherness through the much-anticipated Kongsi Masa / Drop 2 collection. This is more than just fashion — it is a love letter to community, memory, and a gentle reminder that the moments we offer one another become lasting threads in the fabric of life.
THE SOUL OF THE COLLECTION
In village life, togetherness is not measured by distance but by warmth. ANAABU encapsulates this essence, paying homage to the divine cycle of day and night — “wrapped over each other by The Creator” — while calling on us to remain united, echoing the sacred line: “And hold fast to the rope of God, all together, and be not divided.” Drop 2 continues this spiritual and emotional journey, infusing each garment with storytelling rooted in traditional Malay culture and the beloved folk song “Rasa Sayang.”
THE CEMPEDAK ICON
A symbolic star of this chapter is the Cempedak — a tropical fruit immortalised in the lyric “Buah Cempedak di luar pagar…” Traditionally associated with wisdom, abundance, and perfect timing, this motif appears playfully across key pieces, becoming a charming emblem of heritage in motion.
KEY PIECES TO WATCH (AND WEAR)
• Sulam Boxy Top & Knot Skirt: Refined yet rooted, this matching set comes in three colour harmonies. Elegant embroidery at the back of the boxy top mirrors the skirt — a nod to the meticulous craftsmanship of village seamstresses.
• Senja Smocked Top + Senja Knot Skirt: A dreamy duo adorned with Cempedak insignia, designed to move beautifully from casual festivities to slow, sunny mornings.
• Rasa Pleated Skirt + Rasa Loose Kebarung: Combining femininity with flow, this pairing explores time through texture and silhouette.
• Menswear Reinvented: Mao Baju Melayu & Galah Buttoned Shirt: ANAABU reworks its bestselling classics into modern staples — relaxed, airy, and rooted in tradition — complete with matching bottoms for effortless Eid styling and beyond.
Kongsi Masa / Drop 2 is wrapped in nostalgia but designed to live in the now — garments that move with your day, speak your story, and hold space for moments shared with the people who matter. This is ANAABU’s gentle rebellion against disposable fashion: a reminder that style is most powerful when it carries meaning.
ANAABU™
In a world where fashion often chases speed, ANAABU™ takes the slower, more meaningful road — stitching poetry into practicality, and turning everyday wear into quiet heirlooms of the heart. Founded in Malaysia in 2015, ANAABU has become one of the region’s most compelling voices in contemporary modestwear. The brand’s creative director Ana Abu (after whom ANAABU subtly takes its name) approaches design like a storyteller, crafting collections rooted in cultural memory, emotional resonance, and human connection. Spectators were treated to a visual and auditory spectacle as supercars, sports cars, and exotic machines pushed the limits of engineering, leaving trails of excitement in their wake. Drivers demonstrated not just speed but finesse, executing flawless maneuvers, drift sequences, and timed runs that elicited gasps and cheers from the crowd. The Trackday Fest was not merely about raw performance; it celebrated the artistry of driving, where precision, control, and daring intersected in a display that honored the spirit of motorsports in Malaysia.
While the track provided the pulse-pounding action, the festival grounds offered an equally captivating showcase of automotive culture and lifestyle. The JDM Salon Exhibition transported visitors to the heart of Japan’s street car scene, displaying some of the most iconic builds from renowned crews such as MFG and ID. Each vehicle told a story of craftsmanship, dedication, and passion, from meticulously tuned engines to striking body modifications and bespoke interiors. Enthusiasts could explore rare and limited-edition models, connect with the builders, and appreciate the attention to detail that transforms a car from a mere machine into a statement of personality and identity. The exhibition underscored MALF 2025’s commitment to celebrating not just performance but artistry and creativity in the automotive realm.
Adding a touch of nostalgia and reverence for the past, the Retro Revival Gathering brought together Malaysia’s largestever assembly of classic and vintage cars. From gleaming muscle cars of the 1960s to meticulously preserved European and Japanese classics, the gathering offered a living museum on wheels. Owners and collectors shared stories of restoration, the pursuit of authenticity, and the thrill of driving these timeless machines, offering visitors a chance to connect with the history of automotive design and engineering. The vibrant display of chrome, polished paintwork, and distinctive silhouettes reminded attendees of the enduring charm and elegance of vehicles that have shaped automotive culture over decades.
Among the festival’s highlights, Legends of Speed captured the imagination of fans by celebrating Malaysia’s homegrown racing heroes. Motorsport icons such as Fairuz Fauzy, former Formula 1 and A1 GP driver, and Karamjit Singh, the legendary “Flying Sikh” and national rally star, were present to interact with fans, sign autographs, and share insights from their illustrious careers. Their presence added a layer of authenticity and inspiration, reminding everyone that Malaysia has not only embraced motorsports but has produced champions capable of competing on the global stage. Through panel discussions and live demonstrations, visitors gained unique access to the experiences, strategies, and adrenaline-fueled moments that define a professional racing career.
Beyond cars and motorsport, MALF 2025 thrived as a lifestyle festival, integrating diverse elements that expanded its appeal. The Sales Carnival & Bazaar transformed the festival grounds into a bustling marketplace where automotive accessories, lifestyle products, apparel, gourmet food, and novelty items lined every aisle. Visitors could browse for rare car parts, custom modifications, racing gear, and memorabilia, while families and casual visitors enjoyed food stalls, live entertainment, and interactive activities. The festival emphasized the intersection of automotive culture with broader lifestyle trends, highlighting how cars, fashion, and entertainment converge to create a vibrant community of enthusiasts.
Cultural performances added yet another dimension to the festival, celebrating Malaysia’s rich and diverse heritage. Visitors were treated to traditional dances, indigenous performances from Borneo, and ethnic showcases from across the country, providing a colorful and rhythmic backdrop to the automotive spectacle. These performances underscored MALF 2025’s commitment to integrating local culture into the festival experience, offering attendees a sense of place and identity while exploring global automotive trends. The blending of highspeed action with cultural celebration created a unique atmosphere that was simultaneously exhilarating, educational, and entertaining.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, MALF 2025 delivered an equally compelling experience. Custom bike exhibitions, stunt shows, and live demonstrations highlighted the creativity, precision, and daring that define the world of two-wheeled performance. Riders showcased their skills on purpose-built courses, performing jaw-dropping stunts, drifts, and coordinated routines that drew applause from every corner of the venue. The festival also featured sessions on bike customization and maintenance, allowing visitors to engage hands-on with the mechanical artistry behind their favorite machines. This emphasis on motorcycles complemented the festival’s overall focus on diversity within the automotive world, appealing to fans of all kinds of motorized transport.
A notable feature of MALF 2025 was its emphasis on community and engagement. Social media activations, fan zones, and interactive experiences allowed attendees to document their festival journey, participate in competitions, and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Influencers and automotive personalities were present throughout the weekend, sharing live updates, conducting workshops, and encouraging dialogue among fans. This digital integration amplified the festival’s reach, enabling those who could not attend in person to share in the excitement and connect with the vibrant community of automotive aficionados across Asia and beyond.
The festival also embraced sustainability and innovation, showcasing the latest trends in electric vehicles, hybrid technologies, and green mobility solutions. Leading manufacturers displayed cutting-edge EV models, autonomous driving demonstrations, and futuristic concept cars, highlighting the evolving landscape of automotive technology. Educational talks and interactive workshops addressed topics such as sustainable racing, energy-efficient design, and the integration of smart technologies into vehicles, emphasizing that MALF is not only a celebration of heritage and performance but also a platform for forward-thinking discussions about the future of mobility.
From dawn until dusk, the energy at Sepang was palpable. Visitors roamed the festival grounds, cameras flashing as supercars, hypercars, and retro classics gleamed under the Malaysian sun. Families mingled with racing fans, students explored engineering innovations, and collectors swapped stories and tips. Every corner offered an opportunity to witness the marriage of speed, design, and lifestyle, reinforcing MALF 2025’s status as a festival that transcends conventional automotive shows. It was a convergence of passion, culture, technology, and entertainment, creating memories that would resonate long after the engines had cooled. The festival’s organizers took meticulous care to ensure accessibility and enjoyment for all attendees. From organized parking and shuttle services to designated viewing areas and VIP experiences, every detail was curated to maximize the visitor experience. Safety and comfort were prioritized alongside the thrilling displays, enabling families, casual visitors, and hardcore enthusiasts alike to navigate the event seamlessly. This attention to detail reflected the festival’s broader mission: to celebrate automotive culture in a professional, inclusive, and high-quality environment that sets a benchmark for future events in Asia.
By the close of the three-day extravaganza, MALF 2025 had not only showcased the best of Malaysia’s automotive talent and lifestyle culture but also set a new standard for festivals of its kind in the region.
Attendance records were shattered, vehicles of every description were celebrated, and fans left with stories, photographs, and experiences that would fuel conversations and aspirations for months to come. The fusion of motorsport action, lifestyle integration, cultural celebration, and community engagement demonstrated the festival’s unique ability to appeal to diverse audiences while maintaining a cohesive, high-energy atmosphere. It was a weekend where speed met style, heritage met innovation, and the love of vehicles and the lifestyle around them came alive in spectacular fashion.
MALF 2025 proved that the automotive world is not just about machines; it is a culture, a community, and a canvas for human creativity and passion. The festival captured the imagination of those present, inspiring the next generation of car enthusiasts, racers, and innovators to explore, dream, and push the boundaries of possibility. With plans already underway for future editions, MALF has firmly established itself as a crown jewel in Asia’s automotive calendar, where every engine roar, every polished surface, and every drifting maneuver contributes to a story of exhilaration, creativity, and connection. It is more than an event; it is a movement, a celebration of all that makes the automotive world exciting, diverse, and endlessly fascinating.
CULTURE & TRADITON OF MALAYSIA
GAWAI DAYAK
THE HARVEST FESTIVAL IN SARAWAK
Celebrating spirit, season and shared ancestral heartbeat in the land of longhouses
In the early hush of June, when the paddy fields of Sarawak shimmer golden beneath the Bornean sun, an ancient ripple of excitement begins to rise among the Dayak people. Drums are dusted, rice wine flows, bamboo fires are lit, and homes — known as rumah panjang (longhouses) — burst into life. It is time once again for Gawai Dayak, the harvest festival that not only marks the end of a fruitful agricultural season, but also reawakens centuries-old tradition, spiritual communion and collective identity. Celebrated annually on 1st and 2nd June, Gawai Dayak is rooted deeply in the heritage of Sarawak’s indigenous communities —
chiefly the Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, and Orang Ulu. This is not merely a thanksgiving for a bountiful crop; it is a cultural heartbeat, an explosion of colour, rhythm and symbolism that reinforces who the Dayak are, where they come from, and the powerful harvest gods who have guided them across seasons. The atmosphere is one of glorious excess — rituals, tuak (rice wine), jubilant dance, scarlet beadwork, tattooed elders, gong music and storytelling that spills deep into the night. To witness Gawai is to travel through time: to a world where nature is sacred, spirits reside in every grain of rice, and the longhouse becomes both temple and theatre.
Origins of Gawai Dayak
The word gawai means “festival” or “ritual” in the Iban language, while Dayak refers collectively to Sarawak’s indigenous tribes. Traditionally, each tribe held their own private harvest ceremonies in pre-colonial times, honouring the deities of rice, fertility and the land. It was only in 1965, following a spirited campaign by local intellectuals, that Gawai was officially recognised as a public holiday — a powerful cultural milestone for the Dayak people. The first state-sanctioned Gawai Dayak celebration was held on 1 June 1965, and has since flourished into a proud annual tradition across Sarawak.
Beyond the political symbolism, Gawai Dayak is spiritually layered. It honours Pulangi (ancestors), Semangat Padi (the rice spirit), and invokes Petara (gods) for future blessings. To the Dayak, rice is life — when the harvest thrives, so too does everything else. Thus, Gawai is a syncretic moment where animistic lore, ritual magic, community fellowship and thanksgiving coalesce into a living celebration.
The Spirit of Ngajat – Dance, Rhythm & Ritual
Among the most mesmerising elements of Gawai is the traditional Iban warrior dance known as Ngajat. Energetic, ritualistic and graceful, Ngajat sees dancers clad in mesh (woven vests), sirat (loincloths), and glorious hornbill feathered headdresses move in jaguar-like prowls to the deep clang of gongs. Traditionally performed to celebrate victories in headhunting wars, Ngajat has today transformed into a ceremonial dance executed during Gawai to welcome guests, honour elders, and praise the gods. The movements mimic the agility of birds and panthers, paying homage to Sarawak’s rainforest. Nearby, Dayak women perform their own elegant version of Ngajat — swaying softly with curved arms, jingling coin belts, and woven kain kebat skirts — embodying grace, fertility and the rice spirit herself. The music is performed live by elders beating gongs, rebab (two-string lutes), bamboo flutes, and animal-hide drums called bedok. As the rhythm intensifies, the festival erupts into song — ancient hymns in Iban tongue reverberating under the longhouse’s towering roof.
Harvest Offerings – Food, Rice Wine & Festive Fare
Central to Gawai is food: not just as nourishment, but as sacred offering. Rice is prepared in numerous festive forms including pansoh (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo tubes with coconut milk), kuih jala (honeycomb rice cakes), and manok pansoh (chicken steamed inside bamboo with lemongrass and tapioca leaves). But it is rice wine — tuak — that becomes the star. Brewed weeks in advance by the women of the longhouse, tuak is made from glutinous rice, yeast and sugar before being fermented in ceramic jars handed down across generations. During Gawai, tuak is poured generously into coconut shell cups and bamboo tumblers, toasted repeatedly amidst wishes for prosperity and longevity: “Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai!” — meaning “Long life, health and peace.”
Hospitality is sacred during Gawai. Every household in the longhouse prepares a banquet, knowing that neighbours, relatives, and even strangers may drop in unannounced. To refuse food or drink is seen not only as impolite, but as a rejection of blessing.
Customs in the Longhouse
The heart of Gawai beats inside the longhouse — a raised timber structure shared by many families, connected by a communal corridor called a ruai. During Gawai, this becomes a stage of tradition: ceremonial mats are laid, ancestral urns are displayed, and wooden tajau (ritual jars) are filled with rice wine. One of the most sacred customs is the “miring” ceremony, led by village elders known as tuai rumah (longhouse chief) and lemambang (ritual bard). Offerings of chicken blood, betel nut, eggs, rice, and tuak are presented on trays of woven leaves to honour Petara (gods) and ancestral spirits. The lemambang chants ancient incantations, believed to call blessings of fertility, safety and successful future harvests. Another iconic practice is “Ngayau”, a symbolic re-enactment of the old headhunting tradition. Today, it is purely ritualistic — dancers circle a wooden effigy of an enemy, celebrating bravery, strength, and the spiritual connection between warrior and land.
Throughout these rituals, the longhouse remains open — doors unlocked, fires crackling, spirits welcomed. Gawai is a time when the physical and spiritual worlds are believed to draw closest. Every act — from the way water is poured to the songs sung — holds ceremonial meaning.
Traditional Attire & Symbols
Gawai is a visual feast of cultural artistry. The Iban costume, for women, is a tapestry of bold motifs. They wear the kain kebat (hand-woven skirt), marik empang (loom-beaded collar), and silver coin belts that jingle as they move. Their hair is often adorned with bright cloth flowers and polished shell ornaments collected from rivers. Iban men take to ‘sirat’ (loincloths), mesh (woven vests), and elaborate headgear made of hornbill feathers, bear claws, and porcupine quills — each symbolising power or tribal rank.
The Bidayuh, meanwhile, are recognisable for their red-and-black chequered fabric and tiered bead chokers. The Orang Ulu tribes — including Kayan and Kenyah — often wear kain tinggi, beautifully embroidered skirts matched with bold silver jewellery and beaded headbands. Body tattoos, once used to commemorate battle prowess or spiritual journeys, are proudly displayed. The male bungai terung motif (egg-plant flower tattoo) on the shoulder resembles a journey talisman, while spiralling fern fronds represent endurance and continuous growth — mirroring the forest’s resilience.
The Role of Community & Family
At its core, Gawai is about togetherness. Families travel back from distant cities to ancestral villages, making this not just a festival — but a reunion. Marriages are announced, newborns presented, successes celebrated. Into the night, elders share folktales: stories of Kumang (goddess of weaving), of brave warriors crossing the Batang Rajang, of hornbills as omens of good fate. Children rehearse bamboo dances and games like gasing (spinning tops) and batak lampong (seed tossing), keeping vanishing traditions alive. The festival cements inter-tribal harmony — the Iban, Bidayuh and Kayan often celebrating side-by-side — each understanding that identity is strengthened through unity.
Gawai Today – Preserving Heritage in a Changing World
While rooted in sacred tradition, Gawai has gracefully expanded into the modern age. Many younger Dayak now decorate their longhouses with fairy lights, neon signs and creative art installations, turning entire kampungs into Instagram-worthy spectacles. Yet, even as Gawai grows as a tourist attraction, cultural integrity remains central. Communities across Sarawak actively teach children traditional dances, games, weaving and beadwork, so the spirit of the festival never grows diluted. Government efforts and cultural groups increasingly promote Gawai through parades in Kuching, educational exhibitions, and documentaries — reminding Malaysians nationwide of the beauty of Dayak heritage. At its purest, Gawai Dayak remains a spiritual calendar marker — a reminder that gratitude for the land, family, and harvest is timeless. It is not a show — but a living confession of cultural pride and continuity.
To attend Gawai Dayak is to witness a living tapestry — where bone-deep tradition, ancestral reverence, communal joy and the spirit of the paddy field converge into a single celebration of life. It is rhythmic, intoxicating, symbolic, and fiercely proud. From the echoing gong beats that summon the spirits to the first sip of tuak, everything about Gawai speaks of a people rooted fiercely to their soil — and to each other. It is a celebration not only of what has been harvested, but of the living culture that will be passed on to countless harvests yet to come.
RETAIL & SHOPPING MALAYSIA
BEV C in JOHOR BAHRU
Pioneering Intentional Fashion
In the heart of Johor Bahru, a city where heritage streets meet the rhythm of modern life, BEV C Multi-label Store stands as a beacon of intentional fashion. Nestled along the storied Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, the store is instantly recognizable with its industrial-chic design—metal doors, exposed brick walls, and concrete lampshades creating a stripped-down aesthetic that mirrors the brand’s philosophy: authenticity over flash, substance over trend. The street itself is a vibrant tapestry of history and contemporary energy. Tourists from neighboring Singapore wander along the “Heritage Walk,” sampling street food, browsing vintage bric-a-brac shops, and soaking in the local culture. Amid this bustle, BEV C is impossible to miss. The multi-label store has become a reference point for locals and visitors alike, a testament to its founder Beverly’s influence. Known simply as Bev C, she is widely recognized as the catalyst for bringing modern culture into the historic street, and her vision has shaped the local fashion community.
FROM PERSONAL VISION TO COMMUNITY HUB
Beverly’s journey began with Bev C, her eponymous label born from a desire to craft clothing that carries meaning. “Fashion should tell a story, hold identity, and leave a lasting impact,” she explains. Each piece reflects a process of experimentation with materials, reconstructing forms, and redefining silhouettes, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. However, Beverly noticed that many independent designers in Johor Bahru struggled to find a platform. This observation inspired the creation of BEV C Multi-label Store, a curated space where emerging and established designers coexist under one roof. The store is more than a retail outlet—it is a community hub where creativity, craftsmanship, and individuality converge, offering a conscious alternative in a world dominated by fast fashion.
REDEFINING THE LOCAL FASHION SCENE
BEV C Multi-label Store is an antidote to mass-market retail. Its carefully curated selection focuses on pieces that are intentional, meaningful, and artisanal. “It’s more than shopping,” says store manager Beanz Ho. “We aim to cultivate a personal experience with fashion, where customers connect with the story behind each brand.” The store also introduces shoppers to experimental designers, such as DSS Lab, known for avant-garde creations, and artisans from Regional Craft Lab, who transform fabrics into living artworks. Each collaboration aligns with BEV C’s DNA
while maintaining the designer’s unique voice, ensuring that the multi-label store remains a space of innovation and discovery.
CHALLENGES
OF A NEW CONCEPT
Launching a multi-label store in Malaysia came with its challenges. Consumer habits are still heavily oriented toward fast fashion—trendy, inexpensive, and disposable. Educating the public about the value of slow, conscious fashion requires patience and persistence. Additionally, curating a cohesive yet diverse selection, managing logistics, and keeping the retail experience fresh demands constant attention and creativity. Beverly notes, “Running BEV C Multi-label Store is like curating an art gallery. Each brand must shine individually, but also contribute to a cohesive story.” Unlike managing her own label, where she is the sole architect, the store requires balancing multiple talents while maintaining a unified philosophy of intentional design.
Location was key in Beverly’s vision. Jalan Tan Hiok Nee exudes creative energy, a place where heritage merges seamlessly with contemporary culture. “I didn’t want just a store; I wanted a space where people feel inspired,” she says. Designers and customers alike are encouraged to interact, making fashion an immersive experience rather than a transactional one. Community lies at the heart of BEV C, and it continues to guide every decision.
In an era dominated by ephemeral trends, BEV C stands firm. Beverly emphasizes that style is timeless, rooted in authenticity, craftsmanship, and purpose. Trends are observed but filtered through the brand’s lens; anything misaligned with the philosophy of intentional fashion is excluded. The brand’s motto encapsulates this ethos: “Own Your Style or Stay Naked.”
Even in the age of online shopping, BEV C champions the value of a tactile, physical experience. “Customers can touch the fabrics, try on the pieces, and immerse themselves in the atmosphere,” Beverly explains. A brick-and-mortar store offers connections that a website cannot replicate—an opportunity to understand the story behind each design, engage with the team, and leave inspired. Fashion, after all, is emotional, tactile, and inherently human.
BEV C Multi-label Store is more than a shopping destination; it is a pioneer of intentional fashion in Johor Bahru. By blending heritage with modernity, curating meaningful pieces, and fostering a creative community, Beverly has created a space where fashion transcends trends and becomes a lifestyle—a blueprint for Malaysia’s emerging fashion scene.

About NATIONAL HEART INSTITUTE, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia:
Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), the National Heart Institute of Malaysia, stands as a beacon of medical excellence in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic care, not only in Malaysia but across Southeast Asia. Since its establishment in 1992, IJN has undergone a remarkable journey of evolution, growth, and innovation, transforming from a specialized department within a public hospital into a globally recognized, premier heart centre. This elaborate essay will delve into the history of IJN, tracing its origins and motivations, and explore its subsequent evolution, growth, and significant contributions. It will also highlight the institute's numerous accomplishments, its core specialities, focused areas, and its future trajectory as a leader in cardiovascular healthcare.
History: The Genesis of a National Heart Centre
The story of IJN begins in the context of Malaysia's developing healthcare landscape in the late 20th century. Before its corporatization, specialized cardiac care was available but not centralized or optimized to meet the growing demands of the nation. In 1992, the Malaysian government, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, recognized the need for a dedicated, national-level institution to tackle the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. The creation of IJN was a strategic move involving the corporatization of a cardiac department within a large public hospital. This was a pioneering step in Malaysia, aimed at introducing a hybrid public-private model for hospital management to enhance efficiency, quality, and innovation. By being incorporated as Institut Jantung Negara Sdn. Bhd., a company owned by a holding company under the Ministry of Finance, IJN was given greater autonomy in its operations, management, and strategic decision-making compared to a traditional public hospital.
The
decision to corporatize was motivated by several key goals:
• Establishment of a Centre of Excellence: The primary aim was to create a national referral centre for complex cardiology and cardiothoracic cases, consolidating expertise and resources to offer world-class treatment.
• Improved Efficiency and Innovation: The corporatized model allowed IJN to operate with greater flexibility, enabling faster adoption of new technologies and more efficient service delivery.
• Financial Viability: The hybrid model, catering to both publicly referred and private, fee-paying patients, was intended to make IJN a financially sustainable institution.
Opened in September 1992, IJN quickly began its mission to serve as the nation's premier centre for cardiac care. Its early years were focused on building its reputation, assembling a team of highly skilled specialists, and establishing robust diagnostic and treatment protocols.
Evolution and Growth: A Trajectory of Expansion and Advancement.
The two decades following its establishment witnessed a dramatic evolution and growth of IJN. The institute's trajectory can be characterized by a relentless pursuit of medical excellence, technological advancement, and a broadening of its service offerings.
Technological Advancements: From its inception, IJN has been committed to staying at the forefront of medical technology. It has consistently invested in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, from advanced diagnostic tools like echocardiography and CT scans to cutting-edge surgical equipment. This investment has enabled the institute to perform increasingly complex procedures and improve diagnostic accuracy.
Service Expansion: IJN has systematically expanded its range of services over the years. What began as a centre for adult cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery has grown to include specialized services for paediatric cardiology, heart failure management, and preventive cardiology. The establishment of the IJN Thoracic Care Centre, for instance, expanded its scope to include advanced treatments for lung complications, including lung transplantation.
Digital
Transformation: In recent years, IJN has embraced digitalization to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. In December 2024, it achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first hospital in Malaysia to achieve EMRAM Stage 6 validation from HIMSS, a testament to its commitment to integrating innovative health IT solutions. This digital transformation has been instrumental in improving patient-centric, datadriven, and technology-enhanced medical care.
Institutional
Innovation: A 2020 study on the corporatization of IJN highlighted its enduring success as an institutional innovation. The hybrid public-private model, while presenting some tensions regarding public service goals and accountability, has allowed IJN to grow dramatically in size and revenue. Its ability to adapt and thrive over 28 years demonstrates the relevance of this model for health systems in middle-income countries like Malaysia.
Accomplishments and Achievements: A Legacy of Firsts and Excellence
IJN's journey is punctuated by numerous groundbreaking accomplishments and prestigious achievements, solidifying its position as a leader in cardiovascular care.
Pioneering Medical Procedures: IJN has consistently been a pioneer in introducing advanced medical procedures in Malaysia and the region.
Heart Transplants: The institute has successfully performed heart and lung transplantations, showcasing its capability in handling complex end-stage cardiac and pulmonary diseases.
Advanced Interventions: IJN was the first hospital in Malaysia to successfully carry out Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL), a procedure for treating severe atherosclerosis. It has also introduced next-generation transcatheter aortic
valve replacement systems, enhancing precision and outcomes for patients with severe aortic stenosis.
Prestigious Awards and Recognitions: The institute's excellence has been recognized through numerous national and international awards.
Prime Minister's Innovation Award 2011: This award highlighted IJN's innovative approach to healthcare and its significant contributions to the nation.
Global Brands Magazine Awards: In 2016, IJN was named the 'Most Advanced Healthcare Brand in Malaysia,' acknowledging its medical expertise and adaptation of new technologies.
Malaysia National Business Awards 2024: IJN received the Innovation Award in the Healthcare category, recognizing its commitment to advancing heart health through innovative care and treatments.
Healthcare Asia Awards 2025: The institute was honored for its remarkable initiatives and contributions to the healthcare industry, with a focus on its commitment to digitalization and patient-centric care.
Global Health Awards: IJN has received multiple accolades at the Global Health Awards, recognizing its accomplishments and excellence in the Asia Pacific healthcare community.
Community Engagement and Outreach: IJN's commitment extends beyond the hospital walls through its extensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Outreach Programs: Since 2007, IJN has conducted mobile medical clinics and health screenings in rural areas, providing access to basic health checks for underserved communities.
IJN Foundation: The foundation's Patient Assistance Programme provides financial aid to underprivileged patients, funding life-saving treatments, devices, and associated expenses.
Health Awareness Campaigns: IJN organizes various public health campaigns, including cycling and running events and cooking competitions, to promote healthier lifestyles and prevent cardiovascular diseases.
Specialities and Focused Areas: A Comprehensive Approach to Cardiac Care
IJN's strength lies in its comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to cardiovascular care. The institute has developed several specialized areas to address the diverse needs of its patient population.
1. Cardiology: The cornerstone of IJN's services, the cardiology department, is equipped to handle a wide range of heart conditions. This includes advanced diagnostic procedures, interventional cardiology techniques like angioplasty and stent placement, and the management of complex arrhythmias and heart failure.
2. Cardiothoracic Surgery: IJN's surgical capabilities are renowned, covering a broad spectrum of procedures for both adult and pediatric patients. Key services include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements and repairs, and complex surgeries for congenital heart defects.
3. Paediatric Cardiology: The institute offers dedicated services for children with congenital and acquired heart conditions. This specialized area provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and surgical interventions tailored to the unique needs of young patients.
4. Heart Failure Management: A focused area for IJN, this specialty provides advanced therapies and devicebased treatments for patients with chronic heart failure. It emphasizes a holistic approach, including patient education and rehabilitation.
5. Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation: IJN strongly emphasizes preventive measures and lifestyle modifications. Its preventive cardiology programs include risk assessments, lifestyle management, and smoking cessation clinics. The cardiac rehabilitation program, offered in three phases, assists patients in their recovery journey, improving their quality of life post-cardiac events or surgery.
6. Thoracic Care: The IJN Thoracic Care Centre, a specialized unit, addresses a wide range of heart and lung complications. It is particularly focused on end-stage lung diseases and is the only center in Malaysia to perform lung transplantation.
7. Emergency and Support Services: IJN operates a 24/7 emergency department for heart-related emergencies. It is supported by an array of ancillary services, including state-of-the-art laboratory services, dietetics and food services, and physiotherapy.
The Road Ahead: Future Directions and Enduring Commitment
Looking forward, IJN continues to cement its status as a leader in cardiovascular care by focusing on several key areas. Its commitment to innovation, digitalization, and patient-centric care is expected to drive its future growth.
Continued Innovation: IJN will likely continue to pioneer new medical technologies and techniques, positioning itself at the forefront of cardiac medicine in Asia.
Enhancing Digital Capabilities: Following its EMRAM Stage 6 validation, the institute will continue to leverage technology to improve patient outcomes, streamline operations, and enhance data-driven decision-making.
Research and Education: IJN is committed to advancing cardiovascular medicine through research and providing training and educational programs for healthcare professionals, shaping the next generation of cardiac specialists.
Expanding Community Reach: The institute is expected to continue and expand its community outreach programs, focusing on preventive cardiology and providing accessible healthcare to a broader population.
A Brief Summary:
Institut Jantung Negara's journey is a testament to the power of vision, strategic planning, and unwavering dedication to medical excellence. From its bold corporatization in 1992, it has evolved into a premier national and regional heart centre, marked by a history of pioneering accomplishments and a relentless pursuit of innovation. Through its comprehensive specialities, advanced technological capabilities, and deep commitment to community well-being, IJN has not only saved countless lives but also redefined the standards of cardiovascular care in Malaysia and beyond. LOGISTICS UPSKILL SURGE WITH NTW 2025
The Ministry of Human Resources has launched ‘Logistics Unboxed – Empowering Workforce Beyond Borders’, a high-impact programme under National Training Week (NTW) 2025 aimed at addressing talent shortages in Malaysia’s logistics, transportation and supply chain sectors. The initiative, a collaboration between the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) and Infinity Logistics and Transport Sdn Bhd, is supported by both the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) and the Ministry of Transport (MOT). It was officiated by Minister of Human Resources
Steven Sim Chee Keong at Wyndham Acmar, Klang.
Steven stressed the logistics sector’s vital role in sustaining national infrastructure, calling it the “circulatory system” of society. He said NTW 2025 has trained over two million Malaysians in a week, underscoring the government’s drive to build a resilient and adaptable workforce. ‘Logistics Unboxed’ will span five days of hybrid learning and is expected to benefit around 400 participants. Key topics covered include digitalisation in logistics, low-carbon distribution, supply chain alignment with Industry 5.0, and the challenges of shipbuilding and ship repair in Malaysia.
Part of Malaysia’s contribution to the ASEAN Year of Skills 2025, the programme aims to bridge the talent gap, promote cross-border learning and link industry with academia. More than ten collaborators — including logistics associations, universities and transport firms — have backed the initiative, aligning with KESUMA’s 3K agenda: Welfare (Kebajikan), Skills (Kemahiran) and Success (Keberhasilan).
MALAYSIA TO IMPLEMENT AI IN ROAD MANAGEMENT
Road management is crucial in maintaining the infrastructure, safety and the effectiveness of the road itself. Thus, Malaysia will be implementing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to do so, according to the Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. This was revealed by Nanta during his presentation at the 2025 Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum in Suwon, South Korea yesterday. He also added that by using smart monitoring technologies such as drones, sensors and Internet of Things (IoT), the damage on the roads can be detected in real time. “AI helps us analyse this data to identify locations that need immediate attention and to predict potential future damage,” he said.
SPECIAL INITIATIVES
Nanta also shared the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030 which aims to build a national mobility that is safe, more connected and sustainable. “The ITS is currently a basic requirement in the construction of future cities that are resilient, efficient and sustainable. The Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030 being developed will be our main guide in transforming the country’s ITS landscape,” he added. According to the Works Minister, the roadmap has five pillars starting from hyperconnected transport through seamless smart mobility followed by the pathway towards green and sustainable mobility. The other three include strengthened public services through the digitisation of transportation, a safe and secure transport ecosystem, and the use of data for mobility and transport planning. He also pointed out
the revolutions that are already happening in Malaysia including the growth in autonomous vehicles, the use of electric public transport vehicles, the introduction of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system and the establishment of the National Intelligent Traffic Management Centre (NITMC) in Malaysia. “All these plans can be translated into action. Malaysia will continue to innovate, invest and collaborate to build a country that is hyperconnected,” he added. “These transformation initiatives illustrate Malaysia’s strong commitment to building a safer, more efficient and sustainable transport ecosystem,” said the Works Minister. He also added that these initiatives are in line with the country’s broader vision towards hyperconnected cities.

MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST CLOUD REGION IN MALAYSIA
Microsoft announced the general availability of Malaysia West, its first cloud region in the country, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to empowering Malaysia’s inclusive digital and AI transformation. The Malaysia West cloud region, strategically located in Greater Kuala Lumpur, will be an AI-ready hyperscale cloud infrastructure with three availability zones. It will offer Malaysian organizations access to scalable, available, and resilient cloud services coupled with in-country data residency, high levels of security, and lower latency.
The cloud region will also provide customers with access to the most modern services for productivity, data analytics, cybersecurity, computing, and storage. This includes services such as Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, as well as Microsoft’s stack of business applications that will be available soon. YB Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, said in a recorded speech, “With this cloud region, we can leverage the latest digital and AI technologies to move up the value chain, and the Government has set the stage, developing a world-class, trusted digital environment for businesses to thrive, aligned with Microsoft’s Trusted Cloud Principles. Let’s look forward to seeing how these trends and products will evolve and potentially impact the Malaysian sports and fitness landscape.
Silat The Art & Soul of Traditional Malay Martial Arts
Silat, a traditional martial art originating from the Malay Archipelago, is a dynamic and multifaceted combat system deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Southeast Asia. Practiced across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and southern Thailand, Silat encompasses a rich blend of physical techniques, spiritual philosophies, and cultural traditions. Known for its fluid movements, strategic combat techniques, and emphasis on self-defence, Silat is not merely a fighting style but a way of life that reflects the values and history of the Malay people.
ORIGINS AND HISTORY
Silat’s origins are steeped in legend and history, with roots tracing back centuries to the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian archipelago. The martial art evolved as a means of survival, used by warriors to defend against invaders and protect communities. Historical records suggest that Silat was practiced by Malay nobility and warriors as early as the 7th century, during the rise of ancient kingdoms like Srivijaya and Majapahit. Over time, Silat spread across the region, influenced by trade, migration, and cultural exchanges with Chinese, Indian, and Arab traditions. Silat was traditionally taught in secrecy, passed down through families or within tight-knit communities. Its techniques were honed in real combat scenarios, making it a practical and effective system for self-defence. During the colonial era, Silat practitioners played a role in resistance movements, using their skills to oppose foreign rule. Today, Silat is recognized as a cultural treasure, preserved through formal schools, performances, and international competitions.
CORE PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES
Silat is characterized by its fluid, dance-like movements, which combine grace with lethality. Unlike martial arts that emphasize brute force, Silat focuses on efficiency, adaptability, and precision. Practitioners, known as pesilat, learn to use their opponent’s energy against them, employing techniques that blend strikes, joint locks, throws, and weapon-based combat.
Key elements of Silat include:
• Langkah (Footwork): Silat’s footwork is intricate, allowing practitioners to move swiftly and maintain balance while evading or closing in on an opponent. The low stances and circular movements are designed to confuse and outmanoeuvre adversaries.
• Jurus (Forms): These are choreographed sequences of movements that teach the fundamentals of attack and defense. Jurus vary across different Silat styles, reflecting regional and cultural distinctions.
• Weapons Training: Silat incorporates a variety of traditional weapons, such as the keris (a wavy-bladed dagger), parang (machete), and tongkat (staff). Weapons are used seamlessly with empty-hand techniques, emphasizing versatility.
• Spiritual and Cultural Aspects: Many silat styles integrate spiritual practices, including meditation, breath control, and Islamic mysticism (particularly in Malay and Indonesian traditions). These elements foster discipline, self-awareness, and respect for others.
Silat is also known for its emphasis on ilmu kebatinan, or inner knowledge, which focuses on developing mental and spiritual strength. Practitioners are taught to cultivate humility, patience, and a deep connection to their cultural roots.
STYLES AND VARIATIONS
Silat is not a monolithic martial art; it encompasses hundreds of distinct styles, each with its own techniques, philosophies, and cultural significance. Some prominent styles include:
• Silat Melayu: Practiced in Malaysia, this style emphasizes graceful movements, cultural rituals, and the use of the keris. It is often performed during weddings and cultural ceremonies, showcasing its artistic side.
• Pencak Silat: The Indonesian variant, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is known for its competitive forms and dynamic combat techniques.
• Silat Seni Gayung: A Malaysian style that blends selfdefense with artistic performance, often incorporating music and dance-like movements.
• Silat Harimau: A Minangkabau style from Sumatra, inspired by the movements of a tiger, featuring low, aggressive stances and powerful strikes.
Each style reflects the unique history and environment of its region, yet all share the core principles of fluidity, adaptability, and respect for tradition.
SILAT IN MODERN TIMES
In the modern era, Silat has gained international recognition as both a martial art and a cultural art form. It is practiced globally, with schools established in Europe, North America, and Australia. Competitive silat, known as Pencak Silat Olahraga, is featured in regional events like the Southeast Asian Games, where practitioners showcase their skills in sparring and choreographed forms.
Silat has also made its mark in popular culture, appearing in films, video games, and television. Movies like The Raid: Redemption and Merantau have brought the martial art’s explosive techniques to a global audience, highlighting its cinematic appeal. However, Silat remains deeply tied to its cultural roots. In Malaysia and Indonesia, it is taught in schools, community centres, and universities as a way to preserve heritage and instil values like discipline and respect. Silat performances, often accompanied by traditional music like gamelan or Silat Baku drums, are a highlight of cultural festivals and celebrations.
CHALLENGES AND PRESERVATION
Despite its growing popularity, Silat faces challenges in the modern world. The rise of globalized martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has overshadowed traditional practices in some areas. Additionally, the commercialization of Silat has led to concerns about diluting its cultural and spiritual essence. Efforts to preserve silat are ongoing, with organizations like the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT) working to standardize and promote the art globally. In Malaysia and Indonesia, governments and cultural institutions support silat through education and public events, ensuring that future generations can connect with their heritage. Silat is more than a martial art; it is a living testament to the resilience, creativity, and cultural richness of the Malay world. Its blend of physical prowess, strategic thinking, and spiritual depth makes it a unique and enduring practice. Whether performed in a village courtyard, a competitive arena, or a Hollywood blockbuster, Silat continues to captivate and inspire, embodying the spirit of a people who have mastered the art of harmony in motion.
For those interested in exploring Silat, training offers not only selfdefence skills but also a deeper connection to a vibrant cultural tradition. As a bridge between the past and the present, Silat remains a powerful symbol of identity, discipline, and grace.
THE RISE OF MALAYSIAN ESPORTS
A New Era of Competitive Gaming
In recent years, Malaysia has emerged as a vibrant hub for esports, transforming from a niche pastime into a mainstream phenomenon. With a young, tech-savvy population, robust internet infrastructure, and growing government support, the country is carving out a significant presence in the global esports landscape. This article explores the evolution, current state, challenges, and future prospects of Malaysian esports.
THE GROWTH OF ESPORTS IN MALAYSIA
Esports in Malaysia has seen exponential growth over the past decade, driven by increasing access to high-speed internet and the proliferation of gaming platforms. Titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Dota 2, PUBG Mobile, and Valorant have captured the imaginations of Malaysian gamers, fostering a passionate community of players and fans. The rise of mobile gaming has been a game-changer, particularly due to Malaysia’s high smartphone penetration rate (over 80% as of 2023). Games like Mobile Legends and Free Fire have made esports accessible to a broader audience, as they require less expensive hardware compared to PC or console gaming. This accessibility has democratized participation, allowing players from diverse backgrounds to compete.
KEY MILESTONES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Malaysia’s esports scene has produced several notable achievements. In 2019, the Malaysian team Geek Fam made waves by qualifying for The International, Dota 2’s premier global tournament, showcasing the country’s potential on the world stage. Similarly, Malaysian players like xNova and MidOne have gained international recognition, competing with top-tier teams globally. The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Malaysia has become a cornerstone of the local esports ecosystem, offering a structured platform for aspiring professionals. In 2021, Malaysia’s Todak secured a top-four finish at the Mobile Legends M2 World Championship, cementing the country’s reputation in mobile esports.
The government has also played a pivotal role. In 2019, the Ministry of Youth and Sports recognized esports as an official sport, allocating funds for training programs and infrastructure development. The Malaysia Esports Championship (MEC), organized by the Esports Malaysia Association (ESM), has further nurtured talent and provided pathways to international competitions.
COMMUNITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Malaysia’s esports ecosystem thrives on its vibrant community. Local gaming cafes, known as “cyber cafes,” remain popular hubs for casual and competitive gaming, particularly in urban areas like Kuala Lumpur and Penang. These venues often host grassroots tournaments, fostering camaraderie and skill development. Major esports events, such as the Malaysia Esports Awards and Esports Business Summit, have attracted sponsors like Celcom, Maxis, and Razer, injecting capital into the scene. Universities have also embraced esports, with institutions like Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Sunway University offering scholarships and hosting collegiate tournaments. Streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube have amplified the visibility of Malaysian players, with personalities like Soloz and Syafikah building substantial followings. These streamers not only entertain but also inspire the next generation of gamers.
CHALLENGES FACING MALAYSIAN ESPORTS
Despite its growth, Malaysian esports faces several hurdles. One significant challenge is the lack of consistent funding. While government support exists, it pales in comparison to countries like South Korea or China, where esports is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Many Malaysian players rely on sponsorships or prize money, which can be unpredictable. Another issue is the stigma surrounding gaming as a career. Cultural attitudes often prioritize traditional professions, leading to resistance from parents and educators. This perception is slowly changing, but aspiring esports athletes still face pressure to pursue “stable” careers. Infrastructure disparities also pose a challenge. While urban areas boast high-speed internet and gaming facilities, rural regions often lack access, limiting participation from talented players outside major cities.
THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE SECTOR
The Malaysian government has taken proactive steps to support esports. The National Esports Development Plan (2020-2025) aims to professionalize the industry through
training academies, talent scouting, and international partnerships. Budget allocations, such as the MYR 20 million announced in 2020, have funded events and infrastructure. Private sector involvement has been equally crucial. Telecom giants like Telekom Malaysia and Maxis have improved internet connectivity, enabling lag-free gaming experiences. Brands like ASUS ROG and Logitech have sponsored tournaments, providing high-quality gear to players. Collaborations with international organizations, such as Tencent and Moonton, have elevated the production quality of local events.
THE FUTURE OF MALAYSIAN ESPORTS
The future of Malaysian esports looks promising, with several trends shaping its trajectory. The integration of esports into education is gaining traction, with universities offering courses in game design and esports management. This could create a sustainable pipeline of talent, from players to coaches and event organizers. The rise of 5G technology is expected to further revolutionize mobile esports, offering faster and more reliable connections. Additionally, the growing popularity of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) games could open new avenues for competition and innovation.
Malaysia’s strategic location in Southeast Asia positions it as a potential regional esports hub. Events like the Southeast Asia Major and partnerships with organizations like ONE Esports could attract global attention. Moreover, the country’s multicultural society fosters a diverse gaming community, appealing to international audiences. Malaysian esports has come a long way from its humble beginnings, evolving into a dynamic industry with global aspirations. While challenges like funding and societal perceptions remain, the combined efforts of the government, private sector, and passionate community are driving progress. As Malaysia continues to invest in talent development and infrastructure, it is poised to become a powerhouse in the global esports arena. For gamers and fans alike, the future is bright, and the game is just beginning.
TRAVEL & TOURISM OF MALAYSIA
High in the misty embrace of the Titiwangsa Mountain Range, where rolling hills wear coats of emerald green and the air carries the cool whisper of clouds brushing the earth, lies a place unlike any other in Malaysia — the Cameron Highlands. Rising between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level in the state of Pahang, this upland sanctuary feels worlds apart from the country’s tropical lowlands. Here, the pace of life slows, temperatures hover between 14°C and 23°C, and every breath feels fresher, scented faintly with tea leaves, blooming flowers, and damp moss. Travelers come here to sip freshly brewed tea on wooden verandas overlooking vast plantations, to wander along winding trails through ancient forests draped in green, to pick ripe strawberries in the morning mist, and to lose themselves in the serene beauty of terraced farms and cascading blooms. It is a place where colonial charm lingers in Tudor-style buildings, where the heritage of British planters meets the warmth of Malaysian hospitality, and where nature and agriculture coexist in a tapestry of sights, scents, and flavors. Whether one seeks relaxation, adventure, or a taste of history, the Cameron Highlands offers all in equal measure, wrapped in a climate that soothes both body and mind.
History of Cameron Highlands
The story of the Cameron Highlands begins in 1885, when William Cameron, a British government surveyor, was tasked with mapping the interior of Pahang. During his expedition, he stumbled upon a vast plateau shrouded in cool mist, with fertile soils and undulating terrain that seemed perfect for agriculture. Enthralled by its potential, he reported his discovery, and the area was later named in his honor. However, it was not until the 1920s that the highlands began to transform from untouched wilderness into a cultivated paradise. The British colonial administration, eager to escape the tropical heat of the lowlands, saw this upland as an ideal retreat and agricultural hub. Roads were constructed, and British planters began introducing tea, strawberries, and temperate vegetables, crops that flourished in the cooler climate. The most enduring legacy of this period is the Boh Tea Plantation, founded in 1929 by J.A. Russell, a British businessman who recognized the area’s potential for large-scale tea production. Alongside agriculture, the British built Tudor-style cottages, lush gardens, and rest houses that mimicked the charm of English countryside estates, creating a distinctive colonial character that endures to this day. Over the decades, the highlands grew into a patchwork of tea estates, vegetable farms, and flower nurseries, attracting not only farmers but also travelers in search of its natural beauty and refreshing climate. Even after Malaysia gained independence in 1957, Cameron Highlands remained a beloved retreat, blending its historical roots with the vibrant energy of modern tourism while preserving much of the charm that first captivated William Cameron over a century ago.
Natural Beauty & Attractions
Cameron Highlands is, above all, a celebration of nature, and its beauty unfolds in countless forms — from the soft curves of its rolling tea plantations to the mysterious depths of its ancient moss-covered forests. The region’s cool climate and fertile soil have created a landscape unlike anywhere else in Malaysia, a place where both man-made cultivation and untouched wilderness coexist in harmony. Whether you come for the endless greenery, the floral spectacles, or the gentle pace of life, each attraction here offers a distinct experience.
Boh Tea Plantation
Perhaps the most iconic image of Cameron Highlands is that of the Boh Tea Plantation — an endless carpet of tea bushes stretching over sunlit hills. Founded in 1929, Boh is Malaysia’s largest tea producer, and visiting it is almost a rite of passage for travelers. The drive itself is part of the magic, with narrow, winding roads revealing panoramic vistas at every bend. Once there, visitors can take a guided tour of the factory to see the tea-making process from leaf to cup, walk along scenic trails that weave through the plantation, and enjoy a pot of freshly brewed tea at the open-air café, which sits high above the valley. The air here is crisp, the views are serene, and time seems to slow down.
Cameron Valley Tea
For a more hands-on tea experience, Cameron Valley Tea offers visitors the chance to descend into the fields and walk between rows of perfectly trimmed tea bushes. The plantation’s tea house serves an array of brews, each with its own distinct flavor profile, and many visitors find themselves lingering over multiple cups while soaking in the scenery. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially during the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon, when the light dances over the hills.
Big Red Strawberry Farm
Cameron Highlands is as famous for its strawberries as it is for its tea, and the Big Red Strawberry Farm is one of the largest and most popular places to experience them. Here, guests can pick their own berries, choosing the ripest, reddest fruit straight from the vine. The farm also has a café serving strawberry-based treats — think strawberry ice cream, milkshakes, waffles, and even salads. The freshness and sweetness of the berries, combined with the cool mountain air, make this a quintessential Cameron Highlands experience.
Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm
For those seeking a smaller, more intimate setting, Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farm offers a charming alternative. Visitors can still enjoy the delight of hand-picking strawberries, but the atmosphere here is quieter and more relaxed. The café serves homemade strawberry jam and scones, a nod to the region’s colonial heritage, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon tea.
Mossy Forest
Shrouded in mist and mystery, the Mossy Forest is one of Cameron Highlands’ most magical attractions. Located near the peak of Gunung Brinchang, this ancient cloud forest is home to an astonishing variety of plant life, including rare orchids, carnivorous pitcher plants, and delicate ferns. The forest’s gnarled trees are draped in thick layers of moss, and the air is cool and damp, carrying the earthy scent of centuries-old vegetation. A wooden boardwalk makes it easy for visitors to explore without disturbing the fragile ecosystem, while guided tours offer deeper insight into the forest’s biodiversity and unique microclimate. For the adventurous, there are trekking trails that lead deeper into untouched parts of the forest, where the only sounds are the soft drip of water and the occasional call of a distant bird.
Lavender Garden
If the Mossy Forest feels mystical, the Lavender Garden feels like a painter’s palette come to life. Here, vibrant rows of purple lavender sway gently in the breeze, filling the air with their calming fragrance. The garden also features other colorful blooms, themed displays, and a gift shop selling lavender-infused products such as soaps, essential oils, and teas. It’s a favorite spot for photography, and during peak bloom, the entire landscape seems to hum with color and scent.
Floral Nurseries & Greenhouses
Cameron Highlands is dotted with nurseries and greenhouses where flowers bloom in every shade imaginable. Roses, chrysanthemums, lilies, and rare orchids thrive in the cool climate, and visitors can walk among the blossoms, learning about the region’s floriculture. Many nurseries sell potted plants and seeds, allowing travelers to take a piece of the highlands’ beauty home with them.
Time Tunnel Museum
For a step back in time, the Time Tunnel Museum in Brinchang offers a fascinating look at Cameron Highlands’ history. Its halls are lined with old photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts that chart the highlands’ transformation from a colonial-era hill station into today’s popular tourist destination. The museum also recreates vintage scenes — from traditional coffee shops to old classrooms — evoking a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era.
Kea Farm Market
To experience the highlands through its flavors and crafts, a visit to Kea Farm Market is a must. This bustling outdoor market is alive with color and energy, offering everything from fresh vegetables and strawberries to jars of local honey, handmade souvenirs, and bundles of flowers. It’s the perfect place to mingle with locals, sample regional produce, and pick up unique gifts to remember your trip by.
Culture & Local Life
While Cameron Highlands is celebrated for its landscapes, it is equally defined by the people who call it home. The region is a cultural tapestry woven from diverse threads — the descendants of British planters, indigenous Orang Asli communities, Chinese and Indian farmers, and Malay traders. This blend has given rise to a unique way of life shaped by both tradition and adaptation. The Orang Asli, meaning “original people,” have lived in the highlands for generations, relying on the land for sustenance and maintaining a deep spiritual connection to the forest. Some still inhabit villages tucked into the hills, crafting bamboo blowpipes, weaving baskets, and hunting in ways passed down for centuries. Visitors who join guided tours to these villages gain a rare window into this living heritage, learning how the Orang Asli navigate the balance between preserving their traditions and engaging with modern life.
Chinese settlers, many of whom arrived during the British era, brought agricultural expertise and established some of the earliest vegetable farms and tea shops. Their presence is still felt in the bustling morning markets where crisp lettuce, cabbages, and herbs fresh from the fields change hands alongside steaming bowls of wantan noodles. Indian influence, too, is visible in the colorful flower farms and spiceinfused dishes that warm the soul on misty evenings.
The communal spirit of Cameron Highlands is perhaps most evident in its weekend night markets, particularly the Brinchang Night Market, where locals and visitors mingle over skewers of grilled meat, cups of sweet corn, and packets of strawberry jam. Conversations drift between English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil, creating a multilingual hum that reflects the diversity of the highlands.
The Food Journey of Cameron Highlands
Food in Cameron Highlands is not merely sustenance; it is part of the experience. The cool weather lends itself to hot, comforting meals, and one dish reigns supreme in the highlands — the steamboat hotpot. On a chilly evening, tables fill with simmering pots of fragrant broth into which diners dunk fresh vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, seafood, and slices of meat, cooking them to perfection before dipping them into tangy sauces.
The ingredients are almost always sourced locally, and the freshness is undeniable — leafy greens still glistening from the morning harvest, mushrooms with earthy fragrance, and corn so sweet it barely needs seasoning. Tea, of course, is not just a drink here but a way of life. Cafés and plantation tea houses serve it in elegant cups alongside scones, clotted cream, and strawberry jam, in a nod to the region’s colonial heritage. Afternoon tea at the Cameron Highlands Resort or the Boh Tea Centre becomes a ritual — a slow, indulgent pause where time feels suspended. Strawberries feature heavily in the local diet, appearing in tarts, milkshakes, ice creams, and even savory salads. Visitors often remark that strawberries here taste different — more intense, as if the highland air infuses them with extra sweetness. Other highland specialties include honey straight from hillside hives, farm-fresh salads, and delicate pastries from small bakeries that still bake in traditional ovens.
For those seeking local street food, the night markets are a paradise. Piping-hot sweet potato balls, skewers of chicken satay, freshly roasted chestnuts, and cups of steaming teh tarik are sold from stalls where the scent of grilling and frying fills the cool night air. Eating in Cameron Highlands is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the flavors — the chatter of vendors, the laughter of families, and the hum of the highland breeze weaving through it all.
Best Time to Visit
One of the great pleasures of Cameron Highlands is that it can be visited yearround, thanks to its temperate climate. However, different seasons offer different experiences. From February to April, the weather is especially pleasant, with clear skies, mild temperatures, and an abundance of blooms in gardens and along mountain trails. This is a favorite period for hikers and photographers, as the air is crisp and the landscapes vibrant. Between September and November, the highlands enjoy a similar charm, with slightly fewer tourists compared to the earlier months. The rainy season typically spans from November to January, bringing heavier showers that drench the hillsides in fresh green and feed the tea bushes and mossy forests. While this period can limit certain outdoor activities, it creates an almost mystical atmosphere in the forests and is ideal for travelers seeking a more introspective, quieter escape.
Weekends and Malaysian school holidays — especially in June and December — draw larger crowds, with traffic on the winding mountain roads sometimes slowing to a crawl. For those who prefer solitude, weekdays outside these peak periods are ideal. The climate remains consistently cool, with daytime highs rarely exceeding 23°C and nighttime lows dipping to around 14°C. It’s wise to carry a light sweater or jacket, regardless of the season, as evenings can be brisk, and occasional rain showers are part of the highland rhythm.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Cameron Highlands caters to every type of traveler, from those seeking colonial luxury to budgetfriendly homestays. For a touch of British-era romance, the Cameron Highlands Resort offers spacious rooms with four-poster beds, polished wooden floors, and sweeping views over golf courses and rolling hills. The resort’s tea lounge and spa, inspired by traditional tea rituals, create an atmosphere of refined relaxation. Equally charming is The Lakehouse, a Tudor-style boutique hotel perched on the edge
of a serene lake, with ivy-covered walls, antique furniture, and fireplaces that crackle on cool nights. Guests here often feel transported to the English countryside, albeit with the added allure of tropical flowers blooming just outside.
Mid-range travelers might opt for places like the Copthorne Hotel Cameron Highlands, located at one of the highest points in the region, offering panoramic views and easy access to markets and farms. Hotel De’ La Ferns, with its
modern comforts and proximity to Tanah Rata’s shops and cafés, is another popular choice. For budgetconscious visitors, guesthouses such as Father’s Guesthouse provide clean, cozy rooms and a welcoming atmosphere where travelers from around the world share stories over breakfast. Homestays in villages around Brinchang and Tanah Rata offer a more intimate glimpse into local life, often including homecooked meals and garden views. Wherever you stay, the key is to book ahead during peak periods, as the highlands’ limited accommodation can fill quickly when the lowlands grow too hot and the mountains call.
How to Reach Cameron Highlands
Getting to Cameron Highlands is a scenic journey in itself, winding through mountain roads lined with jungle foliage, waterfalls tumbling down rocky slopes, and occasional glimpses of terraced farms clinging to the hillsides. The highlands sit roughly 200 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur, making them accessible within a few hours by road. The most common way to reach is by car, which allows for maximum flexibility. From Kuala Lumpur, the drive takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and the chosen route. There are two main approaches — the older, more winding Tapah route, and the newer, gentler Simpang Pulai route. The Tapah road is shorter but filled with tight bends and steep climbs, offering breathtaking scenery that unfolds in stages as you ascend. It passes the Lata Iskandar Waterfall, where travelers often stop to stretch their legs and enjoy the cool spray of water before continuing upward. The Simpang Pulai route, on the other hand, is longer but smoother, favored by those prone to motion sickness or those driving larger vehicles.
For travelers without a car, buses provide a reliable and affordable alternative. Several operators run daily services from Kuala Lumpur’s Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Tanah Rata, the main town in the highlands, with the journey taking around 4 to 5 hours. Buses are also available from Penang and Ipoh, making Cameron Highlands a convenient stop between the west coast’s cultural hubs. Upon arrival in Tanah Rata, most accommodations are within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. For a more varied journey, some travelers opt for a train-and-taxi combination — boarding the ETS (Electric Train Service) from Kuala Lumpur to either Tapah Road or Ipoh, then continuing the ascent by taxi or bus. While this option is less direct, it can be an enjoyable way to experience Malaysia’s countryside before climbing into the cool heights of the highlands. No matter which route you choose, the final leg of the trip — the climb into the mountains — is a gentle reminder that
the destination’s magic lies not only in its peaks but in the journey to reach them.
Travel Tips & Responsible Tourism
Visiting Cameron Highlands is best enjoyed when travelers embrace both preparation and mindfulness. The highland climate, though cooler than the lowlands, can change quickly; mornings may be crisp and sunny, while afternoons bring sudden mists or light rain. Packing a lightweight waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and layered clothing will ensure you remain comfortable while exploring. Because much of the region is agricultural, weekends and holiday seasons see heavy traffic on narrow mountain roads. To avoid long delays, plan major excursions early in the morning or on weekdays. Motion sickness is common for first-
time visitors due to the winding roads, so carrying remedies or choosing the smoother Simpang Pulai route can make the trip more pleasant.
Respect for the environment and local communities is essential. The highlands’ delicate ecosystems — from the mossy forest to tea plantations — are easily damaged by careless behavior. Stay on marked trails, avoid picking wild plants, and dispose of litter responsibly. Many farms welcome visitors, but remember that these are working spaces; follow guidelines, avoid stepping on cultivated areas, and purchase produce directly to support local farmers. Bargaining in markets is acceptable but should be done politely, and it’s always appreciated when tourists show interest in the stories behind the goods — whether it’s a jar of homemade strawberry jam or a handwoven basket from an Orang Asli village.
For photography enthusiasts, Cameron Highlands is a dream, but it’s worth noting that mist and lighting can change rapidly. Early mornings often offer the clearest views, while late afternoons bathe the hills in a golden glow. If you plan on hiking, inform your accommodation of your route, especially if heading into less-visited trails. Connectivity can be patchy in certain areas, which, for many, is part of the highlands’ charm — a gentle nudge to disconnect and immerse fully in the moment.
Cameron Highlands is more than a destination; it is a feeling — a blend of crisp mountain air, the gentle rustle of tea leaves in the breeze, and the soft murmur of streams winding through valleys. It is the sight of morning mist lifting to reveal green terraces that stretch to the horizon, the warmth of a cup of tea cradled between your palms, the taste of a strawberry so fresh it seems to hold the essence of the land. It is in the markets where farmers greet you with weathered smiles, in the winding roads that challenge and reward, and in the centuries-old forests where every leaf and shadow tells a story. To visit is to step into a Malaysia that feels both familiar and unexpected — a place where colonial history and local culture intertwine, where nature dictates the rhythm of life, and where travelers find not just sights to see but moments to feel.
For some, Cameron Highlands will be a weekend escape from the tropical heat; for others, it will be a journey into the heart of Malaysia’s agricultural and cultural heritage. Yet for all who come, it offers a reminder of the quiet beauty that exists when humanity and nature coexist in harmony. Whether you’re here for the tea, the trails, the flowers, or the simple joy of breathing cool mountain air, the highlands will linger with you long after you’ve descended its winding roads back to the lowlands. And perhaps, like William Cameron himself, you’ll leave with the sense that you’ve stumbled upon a place worth returning to — a place where the mist never fully lifts, but instead wraps around you like a gentle promise to come back again.
