MALAYSIA AIMS TO BECOME A LEADING EDUCATIONAL HUB IN ASIA

Malaysia has been a most popular study destination in Asia for a very long time, attracting students with its combination of academic quality, affordability, and cultural appeal. Malaysia is steadily increasing its international student numbers, supported by strategic government initiatives. East Asian students, particularly from China, are driving this growth. Malaysia’s focus on education and international student recruitment contrasts with challenges faced by traditional Western study destinations.

In 2025, the Malaysian education sector is experiencing growth in several areas, particularly in attracting international students and improving its global ranking. Several universities are improving their positions in global rankings, with eight universities in the top 500 of the QS World University Rankings. The country also aims to attract 250,000 international students by 2025.

Malaysia has also been working to improve its higher education sector, with ambitions to become a leading international education hub in the region. Malaysia has made significant strides in developing its higher education sector, with a focus on enhancing research capabilities, promoting innovation, and expanding access to quality education. The top 5 public universities in Malaysia are now all ranked in the 2025 QS World University Rankings Top 200. Malaysia’s strategic location, ease of doing business, political stability, relatively affordable cost of living, and rich geography and culture-- coupled with the opportunity for students to study at private or public

universities with improving global rankings-- have made it a desirable study destination for international students, particularly those from Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Inbound mobility from East Asia to Malaysia alone surged by 31 per cent per year between 2019 and 2022.  This compares with single-digit growth rates in the prior decade. Malaysia’s macro environment is also supporting the country’s growth as a regional education hub. Malaysia’s foreign policy safeguards its position as a welcoming destination for investments and people, more so in a time of heightened geopolitical tensions worldwide.

The government’s drive to boost inward foreign investment is bearing fruit and is expected to lead to growth in business and employment over the medium term, thereby providing more opportunities for universities to enhance industry engagement and collaboration. With employability at the forefront of students’ priorities, increased opportunities for internships and training with global companies will boost Malaysia’s position as a study destination. Elsewhere, with safety remaining a key concern of students, Malaysia’s balanced approach to both the East and West, as well as its unique melting pot of diverse races and cultures, will make it a more attractive education hub.

There are many reasons for this Increased Global Ranking and Attractiveness. To name a Few:

Improved Rankings: Malaysia’s universities are making strides in global rankings, with 65% of them improving their positions in 2025.

Targeted International Student Recruitment: The Malaysian government is actively working to attract international students, aiming for 250,000 by 2025.

Academic Excellence: Malaysia boasts eight universities in the top 500 of the QS World University Rankings (2025), reflecting its commitment to high-quality education. The country is also rising rapidly in global rankings, with 65% of its universities improving their positions in 2025.

Affordability: Malaysia offers a low cost of living, estimated to be two-thirds cheaper than the US and half as expensive as Canada and Ireland. Tuition fees are also affordable, with undergraduate programs averaging US$6,000 per year.

Cultural and Religious Appeal: As a Muslim-majority nation, Malaysia attracts students from countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Egypt. Additionally, its Chinesespeaking communities make it a comfortable choice for Chinese students, especially post-pandemic, when safety and proximity became top priorities.

Government Support: The Malaysian government, through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), facilitates international student applications and visas, with a 90% visa approval rate. The country aims to attract 250,000 international students by 2025, and application trends suggest it is on track to meet this goal.

Top Source Countries for International Students: In 2023, Malaysia’s top 10 source countries were all in Asia and Africa. China led the way with 26,630 applications, a 21% increase from 2022. Other key markets include Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria, with Bangladesh showing the fastest growth at 94%.

Post-Study Work Opportunities: Malaysia has introduced the 12-month Graduate Pass, allowing students from 23 countries— including the US, UK, Australia, Japan, and Singapore—to work after graduation. In 2024, the program was extended to include Indian and Chinese students under certain conditions, with the policy now valid until 2026. This initiative has boosted Malaysia’s appeal, particularly in markets like the US, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, where interest in studying in Malaysia has grown significantly.

Sustainable Facilities and Initiatives: Educational Institutions are prioritizing sustainable practices in building design, furnishings, and energy management to enhance student recruitment and retention. And they are also focusing on making sustainable investments that are both affordable and address longterm sustainability goals

Malaysia’s Competitive Edge: While Western countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US face challenges in recruiting international students due to funding shortages and regulatory changes, Malaysia is investing heavily in education and international student recruitment. This strategy, described as “competitive leapfrogging,” allows Malaysia to capitalize on gaps left by traditional study destinations.

In short; Malaysia’s strategic investments in education, affordability, and post-study work opportunities are making it a top choice for international students. As traditional Western destinations face challenges, Malaysia is poised to become a leading hub for higher education, attracting students from the whole of Asia, the vast spread African Region, the South-East Asia, India and beyond.

Modernised Traditional Fashion In Malaysia

Trends may come and go, but identity remains; that explains why traditional wear remains an integral part of fashion. Just look at Mongolia’s Olympic uniform that took the internet by storm. With silhouettes that drew inspiration from Mongolian deels, the uniforms were worn during the Naadam—a celebration of the nomadic culture that involved games such as Mongolian wrestling, archery, and horse racing. Fashion can be a soft power—we now know more about the Mongolian culture through these uniforms. Traditional fashion, in this case, carries a sense of scarcity and respect that modern clothes will never be able to replicate.

THE REVIVAL

With globalisation breaking cultural barriers, embracing your traditions is no longer perceived as backwards or conservative. Nostalgia-driven vintage resurgences and the upsurge in practising slow living have cultivated a new generation with a growing appreciation of old-time charm; leaders of most ethnic groups have intensified their efforts in protecting relics and expanding initiatives to preserve intangible heritage, while aspiring designers are more empowered with cultural confidence to bruit about their culture. Antiquated techniques were revived assisted by new advancements, while elements of the passe were incorporated into contemporary designs and furnished with modern tailoring.

But how far can modernisation and creativity go with traditional clothing? Where’s the line between dilution and innovation? From John Galliano’s controversial fascination to Chopava Lowena’s textbook example and sending kimonos from Japan, Scotland’s kilts, or sarees from India down the runways, are perceived as attribution—for better or for worse. It was never without quandaries because as the visual history permeates—or insinuates—into the Western-dominated fashion world, the fierce collision between creativity, modernisation and traditional fashion is indelible. “Blending creativity and modernity with traditional wear is a great way to keep it relevant. But we [as designers] must be careful not to strip away the essence of these garments. The key is finding a balance between innovation and respect for tradition, ensuring that the meaning of these clothes is preserved while still evolving with the times,” comments Uzair Shoid, an emerging local designer who excels in infusing cultures into his womenswear designs.

In Malaysia, for example, getting our mitts on traditional wear—ideally with adaptations that can be incorporated into a daily rotation—is essential. Festive launches have always been a mainstay for many local brands or designers, making up a huge portion of their revenue stream. “There are people who feel that traditional attire is meant to be worn in certain settings, and modernising it for everyday wear would challenge that mindset,” Uzair shares from his observations. Modernisation for the sake of it, without context, could be a double-edged sword that deters the public from new approaches to traditional fashion.

“We need to continue [even with consumers’ scepticism] to prove that these pieces can be practical yet refined for different occasions, with the hope that people will see its potential to be more than just ceremonial wear. It’s about shifting perceptions of cultural fashion.” Practicality, affordability, and sustainability, to name a few, are some of the modern concerns that designers can pen their creativity around to be pertinent in the confluence of cultural, environmental, economic, and technological factors while not losing the identity of these pieces.

ADDRESS THE CROWD

For a cultural melting pot like Malaysia’s, multicultural families or third-culture children are common. The assimilation of cultures increases the demand for garments that allow the wearers to fuse elements from different cultures together as wearers straddle between their roots. Local fashion labels such as ANAABU and BEHATI made it their job to fill the void by designing pieces that merge different cultures. The latest ‘Kongsi Masa’ collection—literally translates to shared times in Bahasa Melayu—by Ana Abu, for instance, was released to celebrate both Chinese New Year and Eid. Baju Kebaya, for example, features a high collar and knotted buttons intrinsic to traditional Chinese fashion.

Long-lost textile techniques or craft-making are innate to traditional garms, hence, they are hardly accessible, and if you get one, it will cost a small fortune. Despite being justifiable, a comparably affordable price tag would be enticing to the masses. The gap is tightened with the advancement of technology. Machine-printed fabric or batchmade pieces cater to the mainstream market with a minimum price. This has, however, disrupted the artisan industry, leaving many with no income. This fast-fashion-like process

is a threat to preserving our culture as the significance of traditional clothing is diluted. While it’s not something to write home about, we cannot overlook the price point as one of the most definitive factors amongst consumers. In an age of rising overheads, it’s even more challenging for independent designers to come up with solutions that balance affordability and authenticity.

“I try to find a balance by selectively incorporating these techniques into key elements of the design, rather than using them for everything,” shares Uzair. Patching traditional fabric onto a bigger piece of textile or using decorative elements on a smaller scale, such as motif embroidery and weaved hemlines, are some of the examples designers opted to work within the budget. As a designer in Malaysia with comparably limited fashion sources, Uzair revealed that experimenting with more accessible materials or streamlining certain processes are effective ways to produce affordable pieces. “Working with local artisans and building long-term partnerships help lower the costs while honouring the craftsmanship,” said the designer, who partnered with local jewellery maker Wasis Studio for his show at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2024.

Practicality is another challenge. The composition of these garments was not made or designed to fit into the routine of urban dwellers with modern tasks and errands to fulfil. In fact, when modern Western fashion replaced these clothes decades ago, its appeal was in convenience, comfort, durability, and adaptability. Traditional clothes are often accoutred with complex fastenings or layers that are less relevant for wearers of this age. As a consequence, customary attire was reserved for special occasions like celebrations, formal settings or weddings—they are crafts meant for collectors, and less for daily wear and tear. The purpose is limited.

Minor touches such as hidden zippers or additional buttons have been useful in making these pieces more wearable. Sarong skirts, for example, commonly consist of a piece of batik fabric allowing wearers to tie it as they wish. On the flip side of the coin, its versatility is also an inconvenience for those who have not mastered the skill of tying. Some traditional pieces were designed to exhibit the artistry, and for daily wear, it can be redundant. As a contemporary designer who promised to deliver “hassle-free essentials”, Shao Fen found her approach to honouring her Chinese roots. The significance of traditional clothing can be conveyed in many ways: “It’s beyond decorative details at times, say for example looking at the characteristics of the fabrics.” The designer who aces in minimal design suggests that other elements, however trifling it may seem, can translate the significance of a traditional piece precisely, too.

For other designers, keeping the silhouettes while swapping the heavier and denser traditional fabrications was part of the creative decisions made to accommodate factors such as cost, logistics and geographical limitations. Lightweight and breathable selections, for instance, are more favoured by Malaysian designers as it is more practical for the wearers. Durable options such as denim are also popular for their ability to withstand regular wear and tear and its strong cultural association with rebellion, youth and nonconformity—a symbolisation that offsets the traditional tone of a classic piece.

THE BOTTOM LINE

“The bottom line will be if a garment can still be recognised as traditional wear by the audience. The are boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed,” Shao Fen asserted. While it’s in the designers’ hands to inject meaning or context into a piece, the audience will ultimately be the judge of whether or not a piece passes as a traditional garment. “Consumers are generally more accepting of a variety of designs— they are equally as excited to explore or try something [as much as the designer does]. I think symbolism still matters. Red, for example, will never cease being an auspicious colour, and it will retain its high demand,” Shao Fen continues.

Fashion, ultimately, is about pushing boundaries and traditional fashion needs to be executed with one more aspect to take into consideration: respect for the culture. Our conversations with Uzair Shoid and Shao Fen have attested that the appreciation for traditional fashion can be fastened with creativity, with or without drastic modifications of the pieces. “I think Thebe Magugu is a great example. Cultural references can be found in not just the designs but also in world-building—the curation, the website design, and every other aspect of the brand,” Shao Fen shares, explaining that embracing the culture should not be a rigid restriction but rather a mainsail of a brand and that requires deep understanding.

“My main focus is to understand the cultural roots of a garment I work with. I need to ensure I respect their history and symbolism.” Uzair insisted that, however back-breaking the process is, if a brand or a designer decides to drop the anchor on traditional fashion, this is the least they should do. For a society that revels in traditional cultures, the current outlook of the local fashion scene is considerably positive in welcoming more to dip their feet into this and contribute their creativity to the domain.

Longchamp Summer 2025 Live Green Event

It’s not often you step into a space filled with vibrant greenery and lush vegetables that you can take home after—yet that was what happened at the Longchamp « Live Green! » dinner at Sentul Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last Friday. Guests were delighted at the edible decorations in the light-filled glasshouse, which became even more stunning after sundown. « Live Green! » is a global dining series by the French maison to combine the art of hospitality with the energy of nature—alongside Longchamp’s Summer 2025 collection, naturally. Among some of the notable guests that night donning the Longchamp Summer 2025 collection included actresses Jojo Goh, Eyka Farhana, and Syamim Farid, entrepreneur Jane Chuck, Ashley Lau, Lisha Ho, and more.

For this global dining series, Longchamp Malaysia worked together with Chef Kim Hock Su of one Michelin-star restaurant Au Jardin in Penang to curate a five-course tasting menu featuring all the delightful things that live green. “It’s aligned with what we’re currently doing in our restaurant,” said Su about the Live Green menu. “This menu is very vegetable-forward—it’s to help diners reconnect with nature,” he explained. The majority of the ingredients in this tasting menu are based on what Su and his team could get from our local terroir, heightening our appreciation for local produce.

“We also incorporated some local elements and culture in the sauces. This way, you don’t just eat the local vegetables, but you get to taste our culture in these dishes as well,” he said. Before the dinner started, we were served a selection of freshly baked housemade breads: Au Jardin’s signature corn bread, which is dense and aromatic; lacto-fermented brioche, a subtle yet rich and buttery bread; and Our Thosai Bread, which has a crisp edge and tastes light and tangy. In place of regular butter, we were intrigued by a tomato-shaped placeholder on the table—it turned out to be Heirloom Tomato Chutney Butter, which tasted exactly as it sounded: tart and spiced butter that added another dimension to our bread course.

Then, a score of dapper waiters marched down the room, armed with our first course for the night: Heirloom Beetroot, comprising salt-baked beetroot, gelee, topped with Oscietre caviar and a horseradish emulsion added after. On the plate, you could hardly distinguish between the thinly-sliced beetroot and the gelee, but their textures were starkly different, and the saltiness of the caviar alongside the slightly spicy emulsion complemented all the elements in the dish. However, of all the courses on the menu, it was the second one that caught our eye the most. The Petit Pois was especially intriguing, consisting of pea custard and crisps, sitting in a Southeast Asian inspired sauce verte. It wasn’t just the Southeast Asian sauce that caught our eye, but the playfulness of the dish. We were served a small bouquet of edible flowers that we could use in our dish to our creativity. We asked Su: What’s particularly special about this recipe?

“This is a green sauce—a sauce verte—that we made for this menu. It has all the local herbs and spices that are easily found here in Malaysia. It’s also very easy to recreate this recipe; all the ingredients are essentially

what we can get in our backyard,” he said. But you don’t need to rack your brains with this recipe, as Longchamp will be releasing the full recipe in due time. Next on the menu was a Red Capsicum Veloute, with Hokkaido scallop carpaccio and anchovy crisps. Once again, the distinction between capsicum and scallop were quite nearly nonexistent until you spooned it into your mouth, and then an explosion of flavours and textures occur. For the mains, we opted for Hay Aged Duck served with carrots and herbs. Finally, the fifth and final course— dessert—came. On paper, it sounded interesting—a fennel sorbet with lime pate de fruit and espuma, atop a jasmine sponge. On the palate, it was amazing. The fennel flavour worked surprisingly well in a sorbet, complemented by the tang of lime and the floral notes of jasmine in a light-tasting sponge cake. “If you look at what we do in our restaurant, you’ll notice that our dishes are always quite vegetable-forward,” said Su. “With vegetables, I feel that there are more possibilities… it’s always a lot more challenging for us to focus on what we can do more with vegetables.”

Golden Goose Gains the Spot in The Exchange TRX in Malaysia

You may have seen the likes of Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Megan Fox copping sneakers with a big star emblazoned on their day offs—it’s none other than Golden Goose. The beloved Italian brand has opened its first store in Malaysia at the shopping wonderland—The Exchange TRX bringing its iconic sneakers and ready-to-wear for us to splurge.

A little back story: Founded in 2000 by two young Venetian designers, Francesca Rinaldo and Alessandro Gallo, the brand arguably started the ‘ugly sneaker’ trend with its signature distressed, leather Super-Star sneakers—giving them that cool, vintage vibe that many people love. Golden Goose lives by their slogan “perfect imperfection” meaning crafting each pair of sneakers with stitches, marks, and rips making them feel like little postcards filled with stories from the past. Apart from their footwear, they carry apparel, bags, and other accessories with their signature “lived-in” look.

The new store in The Exchange TRX captures Golden Goose’s Venetian essence with its raw concrete walls and ceilings counterbalanced with wooden furniture for a more homey feel—reflects their very first ‘house,’ which was actually a garage turned workspace. In the heart of the store lies the brand’s Co Creation Lab, where you can create your own pair of bespoke sneakers literally from scratch. With the help of their Dream Makers; a cutesy way

of saying cobblers, customers can choose every single detail from the material, colour, embroidery to laces. Your dream creation will be sent all the way to Italy to be crafted and shipped back to you in a few months. To commemorate its grand opening at The Exchange TRX, Golden Goose held a special collaboration with Malaysian embroidery artist Anni Tai for an immersive Co Creation experience. The artist is known for her exploration of womanhood and self-expression, and her love for bouquets. For the event, she created ten unique embroidery designs. The patches feature flowery and vibrant patterns, stitch it on your favourite Golden Goose sneakers or jackets— perfect for those in their feminine era. The opening boasted a guest list of some of Kuala Lumpur’s hottest faces including Yaya Zahir, Sophia Liana, Shalma Ainaa, Gaston Pong, and Maggy Wang. Donning their Super Star sneakers with pieces from the brand’s collection–looking effortlessly chic yet rebellious.

Edith Ho’s Gallery des Artistes

Shaping the Pop Art Scene in Malaysia

Edith Ho — founder of Gallery des Artistes — shares her journey from art collector to gallerist, and her passion for bringing contemporary pop art to Asia.

Edith Ho’s life and career have been shaped by a rich tapestry of global influences. With Danish and Brazilian heritage, a childhood in France, and years spent living in Asia, she was naturally drawn to the arts — an industry that celebrates culture, people, and place. A dedicated art collector for over two decades, she took a bold step forward by founding Gallery des Artistes — a space dedicated to championing contemporary art. Focusing on emerging artists at the cutting edge of the Pop and Street Art scenes, Gallery des Artistes has become a platform for bringing contemporary art to Asian audiences and

beyond. Speaking to us, Edith shares insights into her journey, her vision for the future of art, and the stories behind the artists she’s passionate about.

When did you first get interested in art, and how did it lead you into the business of being a gallerist? I have always been interested in art. My mother was an amateur painter, and I grew up in France so automatically you soak it all in!

When was Gallery des Artistes founded in Kuala Lumpur? Gallery des Artistes was founded in 2018 with the purpose and mission to show and bring POP ART — and more specifically Western pop art — to Malaysia.

What differentiates Gallery des Artistes from other galleries? I would say two things — first, all our artists and their works are contemporary, literally meaning that they are exhibited around the world now; and second, the price points. I was growing exceedingly critical of certain galleries in the region and their pricing strategies, so I decided to be super transparent and just show the works at European studio prices.

Can you share the most significant pop-up event curated by Gallery des Artistes in hotels and unconventional locations? My favourite event was at W Kuala Lumpur, where we organised an “ART TRAIL “ taking guests on a walkabout from the lobby to the pool to the Presidential Suite where a surprise cocktail was ready for them! Art was everywhere, and as we went along, I explained each collection to them.

Tell us about the vibrant “Crazy Asian” series you have produced in collaboration with artist Gung Ho. “Crazy Asians” is Gung Ho’s second collection, born in 2021 during the COVID lockdown. I called it “Crazy” because we were all going crazy and the works reflect that — although in a very happy, positive way. The artworks are extremely colourful, eye-catching, very “pop” and slightly provocative. In fact, in 2019, I created a collective with a Malaysian artist, and we called ourselves Gung Ho, so now I am in an unusual position of being a gallerist and an artist at the same time.

What led you to develop a strong expertise in the contemporary pop art market?

Before officially launching the gallery, I decided to go back to school, studied at Sotheby’s and MOMA, and toured major art fairs around the world to get a sense of what was trending out there. Being a gallerist means working actively on positioning your artists. How do you approach that part of your work?

My rule of thumb is to have a personal connection with the artists. Most of them have become friends. I generally look for emerging artists who are doing well and gaining traction.

Today, a lot of your business as a gallerist is being conducted online. What skills are required there?

True, and you need an active presence online and on social media. But I think that a physical space is still relevant because art is emotional and people still like to see the works in real life.

Tell us about the latest exhibitions you have curated in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with the Spanish embassy. That was a lastminute rush as the artist could only be in KL for less than 24 hours. I approached the Embassy of Spain nevertheless because Artigas is a world-famous sculptor and it’s rare to have sculpture exhibitions here. The Embassy was very receptive, and in a mont,h we managed to pull it off!

What is planned for you this year and 2025?

Lots of surprises, mainly with Gung Ho and an exciting collaboration — still secret for now — with a big luxury conglomerate! Hope to share some news about it soon.

What is your favourite museum in Asia?

Definitely M+ in Hong Kong.

What is your best advice to a young gallerist wanting to set up their own art gallery?

Do it for passion, not for money.

If you were to name one mentor who has inspired you in your life, who would that be?

My mother’s best friend, in Denmark, who ran a famous gallery and hung paintings on trees!

THREE HOMEGROWN PERFUMERIES CARVING A PATH FORWARD FOR MALAYSIAN FRAGRANCE BRANDS

Everybody is getting on the perfume train, and we’re not talking about how Hollywood celebrities such as Sabrina Carpenter and Harry Styles are doing it. Ever since Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 hit the mainstream, the once-exclusive world of niche perfumery became less obscure. Now, labels such as Zoologist Perfumes, Floraïku, and Penhaligon’s are not at all

foreign to local noses. Malaysia has quite a robust community of fragheads—that’s the term used for fragrance enthusiasts. For starters, there is a 50,000-people-strong online group. Here, they share their finds from around the world (quite literally, as some even offer decanted perfumes for those interested), talk about the old, the new, and the upcoming in the realm of perfumery, and occasionally gather in person.

VIBRANT LIFESTYLE

Aside from consumers and connoisseurs, local luxury beauty retailers are also expanding their curations. In 2022, TROVE opened its first location at The Starhill, bringing in award-winning creations from Ormonde Jayne, Parfums Dusita, and Mendittorosa. As of press time, it hosts a total of 20 brands from all over the world, and store visitors can immerse themselves in the experience at the thoughtfully designed coves.

A year prior to that, Escentials opened its doors, bringing to local shoppers immaculate blends from maisons such as Santa Maria Novella, Björk & Berries, and Amouage. KENS Apothecary, which has been in the market for over two decades houses iconic fragrances like Diptyque, Maison Crivelli, and Goutal. Amaris is where we can visit to get our hands on Akro, BDK Parfums, and Xerjoff. The short of it is that we are not lacking options here.

And when enthusiasts ran out of new smells to nose into, they began to branch out. There’s a lot of pride in uncovering hidden gems—everybody wants to be the first to realise a new jewel—so travel souvenirs now include their new discoveries: HMNS, Alt Perfumery, and Unké Naru from Indonesia; Pesade, Tamburins, and Borntostandout from South Korea; Borom, Sirodom Parfum, and Butterfly.

Just Around the Corner

But sometimes the real treasure is hidden in plain sight. Lying right under our noses are remarkable Malaysian perfume brands such as Malaya Perfumery, Scents of Memento, and SUKKA. Through their distinctive background, they each bring a different edge to the local offerings. Between these three designers, they collectively have over 70 perfumes in their repertoire. Alia Alhaddad of SUKKA brings with her a lifetime of experience being entrenched in the business during her formative years and seeks to bring modernised takes on oud to the masses. Malaya Perfumery’s Zaid Musa is armed with a chemical engineering background and his flair for playing around with scent profiles and

churning out fresh scents that have won the hearts of many. Koryou Xing from Scents of Memento, on the other hand, is a career creative who can encapsulate experiences into a bottle. The one common ground? Their passion for the field.

Zaid and Xing both left lucrative industries to kickstart their brands. Zaid found the industrial end of chemical engineering to be dreary, while Xing was convinced by his advertising colleagues to turn his love for collecting perfumes into a business. “I shop so much that one day my friends told me that I may as well begin making my own,” he jokes. Nowadays, procurement has become part of his research and development process. Obviously, he’s not alone in this never-ending cycle of pickup perfumes in the name of research. In fact, one could even call it an occupational hazard. There’s always a match that lights the first sparks of a fire.

“Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey completely captured my attention in the late ‘90s. It just felt so ahead of its time,” Alia confirms. “For me, it has to be Olympéa by Paco Rabanne,” says Zaid. “Bleu de Chanel has been a scent I’ve been using since my schooling days. I feel nostalgic and young again whenever I wear it, and it’s one that I continuously repurchase,” Xing shares.

The Real Scoop

Despite sharing the same domain, they each identify different predicaments in their ventures. Alia acknowledges the cultural disparity—she is of Middle Eastern descent—and puts that at the forefront of her consideration. “I’ve had to learn a lot since I can’t approach things from a Middle Eastern or Western way. I have to consider cultural aspects and practices.” She also realises that weather plays a lot into how perfumes are worn, noticing that Malaysians lean towards fresh scents to counterbalance the stifling heat.

“I find that the Malaysian audience shy away from trying new things, so I have to reel my excitement in and design scents based on what will work for the market,” Zaid admits. This rang true when we spent an afternoon at Malaya Perfumery, where the designer

showcased his archive of prototypes. It felt like we stepped into Willy Wonka’s lab, where all kinds of fantastical creations were available for us to relish. Alas, some of them may only be available in the coming years, or never even see the light of day. This is dependent on our response to it as consumers, of course. As for Xing, he struggles against global designer brands. “People here aren’t as willing to spend on local luxuries as they do for foreign labels. Which is unfortunate, because we have immense talent here that’s yet to be discovered,” he asserts. “We also have a smaller market compared to Thailand and Indonesia, and can’t produce items as fast as they can.” All that does not put a damper on their spirits, though. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of education. Sure, some fragrances can be overwhelming for the uninitiated, but there’s a key to developing your senses. “I

would recommend that they first start with citrus fragrances, then go towards the fruity and then the spicier ones, and finally explore more of what oud perfumes can offer,” Zaid suggests. For Malaya Perfumery, the designer nominates ‘Mineral Water’ to be the entry point. Over at SUKKA, Alia suggests ‘High Tea at the Ritz’ for your appetiser. ‘007 Blue Jeans White Shirt’ from Scents of Memento— the brand’s best-seller—is Xing’s pick for those new to his neck of the woods.

Following Their Noses

Challenges are simply realities that everyone, not just businesses, has to face. Even though these brands are not outwardly working together, they do share a common goal: to cultivate a vibrant perfume community here in Malaysia. With many ways to go about it, each of these scent designers chose their path towards tackling the task.

Alia, who has now successfully placed SUKKA in a local beauty retailer, will focus on further establishing the label’s presence in Malaysia. Zaid, on the other hand, is toying with the idea of offering Malaya Perfumery beyond our national borders. The two actively participate in lifestyle pop-up markets in order to introduce their creations to new crowds, so if you have yet to stumble onto them, you might soon. As for Xing, he is happy to keep his production small, as he makes his perfumes by hand. “This will never feel like a job to me, and I don’t want it to be. My shop is like a playground to me and it’s where I get to know my core audience.” Of course, if the right opportunity does present itself, he is open to considering it. For now, he has his eyes on the Thai market.

So the question now, dear reader, is what can we do to bolster their efforts? Far be it for us to seek your blind faith. But for starters, it is perhaps time to seek out local perfume brands and see what’s up your alley. Be it light and effervescent or deep and complex, we have all that and in between right here at home.

Japanese Singer Tatsuya Kitani

On His First Visit To Malaysia & Upcoming Releases

Tatsuya Kitani is a name familiar to many anime fans, having sang the theme songs to several popular series including “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Oshi No Ko” and “Rurouni Kenshin”. As such, fans were ecstatic to learn that the singer-songwriter is making his first visit to Kuala Lumpur later this month, for the upcoming “CENTRAL MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL 2025 in Kuala Lumpur”.

The joint concert marks Tatsuya Kitani’s first performance in Malaysia, so the anticipation is high. Lucky for us, Hype Malaysia has the chance to speak with the 29-yearold to hear what he has to share about the concert. At the same time, we also talked about what he’s looking forward to in Malaysia, what it was like working with Kento Nakajima, and his future projects. Keep scrolling to learn more:

1. Is this the first time you’ve met the other acts from the

“CENTRAL MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL 2025 in Kuala Lumpur” lineup? What is your first impression?

I’ve only briefly greeted ATARASHII GAKKO! members on a TV show. As for Creepy Nuts, I performed on a music program in 2019 where DJ Matsunaga was the MC, and I’ve been in touch with him since then. Both are artists I admire for their cutting-edge musical expression, so I initially thought meeting them in person might be intimidating…but in reality, they turned out to be the kind of humble and refreshing people you would love to meet.

2. What are your thoughts about performing at this joint concert with ATARASHII GAKKO! and Creepy Nuts? Both artists create new and innovative music like no one else did, so I’m looking forward to seeing them perform as a music fan (rather than just as a fellow performer).

3. What are you looking forward to the most in Malaysia? I’m not sure if we’ll have the time, but I’d love to visit the Islamic Arts Museum. The Masjid Negara is also unique, so I definitely want to see it in person. And of course, the Petronas Twin Towers! There are so many fascinating architectural sites that catch my eye.

4. Can you share a teaser for your performance? What do you have prepared for fans?

I’m preparing my body to be in good shape and will do my best to perform as usual, so that everyone can enjoy the music!

5. Do you have any upcoming projects that you are excited to release? Can you share more about it?

I’ve been working on a few songs that focus on the essence of Japanese pop music that I love. So, I’m both excited and a bit nervous to see if the people who’ve been following CENTRAL will enjoy this kind of music.

6. At festivals, each artist is given a specific duration for their set. How do you choose the songs you want to perform within the given timeframe?

Since this is my first live performance here, I’ll do my best to play as many songs that most of you know as possible.

7. Is this your first time in Malaysia? What is your first impression of the country? t’s my first time. Historically, Malaysia has been a crossroads of multiple cultures, so I think that unique harmony can be seen in its architecture and food culture. I’m looking forward to it!

8. Are you familiar with the local cuisine? Is there anything you are looking forward to trying? I plan to try out laksa!

9. You’re also active as a duo (GEMN) with Kento Nakajima. What’s it like working with him?

As an idol, Kento’s musical expression is rooted in a completely different foundation from mine,

and he pursues the most pure and traditional form of the Japanese “idol” concept. Working together with him has led to countless discoveries. It’s a great learning experience for me about what it means to be involved in the entertainment industry.

10. Apart from sajou no hana, in your early days, you were a part of bands like Hitsuji no Mure wa Warawanai and “humanic”. What can you recall from those times? I believe we were making good music, but unfortunately, we didn’t gain much recognition from the public, so there aren’t many fond memories from that time. However, everything I learned back then has become the foundation of what I am doing now, so it was definitely an experience I couldn’t do without.

11. Before becoming a singer, you were a Vocaloid producer. What made you want to become an artist yourself?

I was influenced by seeing artists like Kenshi Yonezu and wowaka from Hitorie transition from the underground scene to the mainstream with their own voices. Also, I felt that if I wanted my music to be heard by people like my family and friends who aren’t particularly into music — the best approach was through my own voice.

12. Your music video for “Chained” is the first one where you incorporate both live action and animation for your solo project. What was the inspiration behind it? There was a restriction where NATORI couldn’t express himself through live action, so I thought about how to make the most of that. A large part of the inspiration came from the past works of the director, Bivi.

13. You worked on the OP for several animes like “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “Oshi no Ko”. Is there an anime that you’d love to do the theme music for?

I’d love to try working on a pure love story. It’s quite different from my usual style, so I feel like it might bring me fresh inspiration.

Tatsuya Kitani will perform at the “CENTRAL MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT FESTIVAL 2025 in Kuala Lumpur” at Zepp Kuala Lumpur, on 26th April 2025 (Saturday) alongside Creepy Nuts and ATARASHII GAKKO! Tickets are still available on the BookMyShow website.

MIH MEGATRENDS TO SPOTLIGHT SUSTAINABILITY IN HEALTHCARE

The Malaysia

International Healthcare Megatrends 2025 will take place from Nov 25 to 27 at the Kuala Lumpur

Convention Centre.

The Malaysia International Healthcare Megatrends will return for a second year, and it has set its sights on being more impactful than ever by bringing together global thought leaders, policymakers, clinicians and industry experts. The global healthcare conference, happening from Nov 25-27 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, aims to position Malaysia at the forefront of regional health transformation and innovation, in light of the nation’s Asean chairmanship this year.

Under the theme “Innovating for a Healthier Sustainable Future”, the event will introduce new programme elements, including focussed breakout tracks, interactive engagement zones, and a three-day exhibition split into six key elements, said KPJ Healthcare chairman Ismail Bakar.

Ismail Bakar
Chin Keat Chyuan

The six elements include advanced medical technologies, biopharmaceuticals and advanced therapies, digital health, AI-powered diagnostics and telemedicine, community health and public wellness, as well as sustainable healthcare solutions.

“We eagerly anticipate the innovations and ideas these exhibitors will showcase: solutions that do not merely address today’s needs but anticipate the trajectory of healthcare transformation,” Ismail said at the soft launch of MIH Megatrends 2025 here today.

The conference is in line with the health ministry’s strategic priorities, particularly in advancing the aspirations outlined in the health white paper; a comprehensive plan to reform the healthcare sector in phases over the next 15 years.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, who was present at the launch, said MIH Megatrends 2025 will focus on tackling issues related to non-communicable diseases, public health and sustainability.

“It’s important for the conference to present itself as a platform where we exchange groundbreaking research findings and innovations. These efforts are crucial in ensuring a healthcare system that is equitable, resilient and sustainable for future generations,” he said.

KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan said he expects attendance to surpass the 20,000 online and in-person visitors recorded at last year’s event.

“We are definitely aspiring to become the biggest healthcare conference (in Asean) because it not only involves megatrends in Malaysia, but we also want to open up the stage for everyone in Asean,” he told reporters.

Dzulkefly also highlighted the practice of precision medicine and genomic medicine, both of which he believes will become “the centre piece of innovation” in the healthcare industry. “I see the potential and benefits of genomic medicine in delivering truly personalised care,” he said.

“I want to emphasise that health is a fundamental human right, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare services, regardless of their socioeconomic status, gender, age and ethnicity,” he said.

Revitalise Your Health: Personalised Wellness Solutions

1 Assessment

The key to lifelong health lies in disease prevention and health maintenance, and the key to prevention is assessment. To provide you with a health plan that is tailored to your needs, we need to understand the true condition of your body, both internally and externally. We do this through the use of cuttingedge non-invasive diagnostic tests and examinations to get a whole in-depth picture of your health, genetics, environment and lifestyle.

2

Detoxification

Our body accumulates toxins daily, through food, water and medication we consume, and therefore, leads to exposure to stress and pollutants. Through our detox and cleansing programmes, we help you remove these toxic substances and accumulated waste products from your body before they cause further harm. As a result, your body will feel ‘lighter’, and you will enjoy clearer skin, a sharper mind, enhanced senses and improved mental and emotional health.

3 Boosting

After your cells, tissue and organs are cleansed and purified, your body kick-starts its own repair process to help heal and regain proper condition and function.

4 Rejuvenation

The fourth and most crucial step is cell rejuvenation for optimal organ function and health. We achieve this with ZÉLL-V microbiology, an advanced cell therapy praised as the medicine of the future. This breakthrough regenerates weakened cells, reversing aging and restoring vitality.

Science-backed results

Scientifically proven results for clear, precise health insights and informed decisions.

Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle treatment that uses warm water to cleanse the colon, removing waste, gas, and mucus without chemicals or drugs. Modern diets rich in animal protein, processed foods, fat, and sugar—combined with stress and a lack of exercise—can cause waste and toxins to accumulate in the colon. This therapy flushes out harmful bacteria and restores the colon’s tone and shape. It helps the body cleanse itself effectively, leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and healthier.

Liver Detox

Liver detox is key to cleansing your body, boosting energy, and protecting vital organs from toxins. Environmental pollutants, poor diet, and stress can overwhelm the body, making detox crucial. Our formulation includes glutathione, an antioxidant that fights toxins, supports liver health, and enhances immune function. Regular detox helps prevent diseases linked to toxicity, improves energy, and protects cellular health, especially for those exposed to toxins, smokers, or those with chronic conditions.

Coffee Enema

A coffee enema involves inserting coffee rectally, allowing caffeine to be absorbed into the body and directed to the liver, where it stimulates bile production to expel toxins. This enhances the liver’s detoxification capabilities and promotes the removal of accumulated toxins from organs and tissues. Additionally, the coffee helps increase glutathione-S-transferase production, which is essential for detoxification. Coffee enemas may also help eliminate parasites, candida, and other pathogens, making it an effective method for accelerating detoxification.

Low-Intensity Laser Therapy

Low-Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) uses fibre optic light guides to deliver laser light directly into the bloodstream, interstitial compartments, or joints, enhancing therapeutic effects. It penetrates up to 12 cm into deep tissues, offering anti-inflammatory and cellular benefits. Different laser wavelengths (red, infrared, green, and blue) target specific biological effects.

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive treatment for angina, a severe chest pain caused by blocked arteries. Known as “Natural Bypass,” EECP improves blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart, reducing angina frequency and intensity. It’s a viable alternative for patients not eligible for heart surgery.

Nutrient Therapies

Our nutrient infusion therapies are designed to enhance overall health and well-being. These therapies deliver essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients directly into the bloodstream, supporting energy levels, metabolism, immune function, and detoxification for optimal physical and mental performance.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive treatment using focused pressure waves to address musculoskeletal conditions like tennis elbow, heel pain, and Achilles tendinopathy. It improves blood flow and stimulates self-healing, offering pain relief in just a few sessions and can act as a replacement to surgery.

Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction (SWTD)

Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction (SWTD) aims to address the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction (ED) rather than just enhancing erectile function. By improving penile blood flow and promoting tissue healing through angiogenesis, SWTD has shown promising results in restoring spontaneous erections and reducing reliance on medication, with minimal side effects.

Women Health Enhancement

At V Wellness, we support women in balancing family, work, and health challenges. Our S.P.A Female Reproductive System Therapy rejuvenates the reproductive system, aiding in conception and alleviating menopausal symptoms, helping women of all ages restore their health and vitality.

HERITAGE & ARCHITECTURE OF MALAYSIA

Exploring Thean hou Temple A CULTURAL GEM IN KUALA LUMPUR

Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the most vibrant cultural landmarks in Malaysia, and Thean Hou Temple is undoubtedly one of its shining stars. Nestled on a hilltop, this magnificent temple offers visitors a chance to dive into Malaysia’s rich Chinese heritage while also enjoying a peaceful escape from the bustling city below. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, a photographer, or simply looking for a serene place to visit, Thean Hou Temple should be at the top of your list.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY

Thean Hou Temple, also known as the Temple of the Heavenly Mother, was completed in 1987 and is dedicated to Mazu, the Chinese goddess of the sea, who is believed to protect sailors and fishermen. This six-tiered temple blends elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, making it a central hub for religious and cultural celebrations. Its architecture beautifully reflects the traditional Chinese design, with intricate details, dragon carvings, and stunning pagodas that capture the eye from every angle.

ARCHITECTURA MARVEL

Attracting a large number of tourists annually due to its unique architectural beauty and colorful decorations, Thien Hou Temple has four different floors, each with distinct and unforgettable features. The floors are arranged as follows:

FIRST FLOOR: Displays souvenirs and serves delicious vegetarian food.

SECOND FLOOR: Wedding center for couples.

THIRD FLOOR: Office area of the temple management.

FOURTH FLOOR: Houses Buddha statues for visitors to admire and perform spiritual rituals.

One of the first things you’ll notice when arriving at Thean Hou Temple is its breathtaking structure. The temple’s iconic red pillars and ornate rooftops adorned with dragon motifs are a testament to classic Chinese architecture. As you explore, you’ll come across beautifully landscaped gardens, koi ponds, and even a charming Chinese medicinal herb garden. The grand hall inside the temple features three altars dedicated to the goddess Thean Hou, as well as the goddesses Guan Yin and Shui Wei Sheng Niang. Visitors often leave offerings and prayers here, adding a layer of spirituality to the experience.

The main building of The Selangor and Federal Territory Hainan Association Thean Hou Temple inherits the characteristics of classical Chinese architecture. Its distinguished features include vibrant colours, bold pigmenteation and strong contrasts. Emotions of these colours are reflected from the facade of the building, making this Sino-architecture extra colourful and radiant.

Colouration of paintings on the Thean Hou Temple’s roof decoration, painted beams, sparrow braces, brackets, rafters, ceilings, coffers, balustrades etc. truly exhibits the colour distinction of Chinese art. Another distinguished characteristic is the swallow-tail and dragonphoenix cresting on the temple ridge. It is a classic architectural design of the south. On the other hand, the ridge of the archway at the entrance is in a straight line, featuring two ridge-biting dragons on both ends. This, in turn, is a typical design of the northern architecture. Hence, it could be said that the Thean Hou Temple of Selangor and Federal Territory Hainan Association is a majestic unification of the southern and northern architectures.

ROOF DESIGN

The Thean Hou Temple is modelled from the ancient architecture. Wood was the main building material, over the years, due to the frequent fire incidents; it was then gradually replaced by the metal building materials. Therefore, it is common to find decoration of auspicious animals on the roof, including fishes, dragons, phoenixes, celestial beings, lions and elephants. Some of them are cut from azure stones, and others are burnt with white clay the way glazed tiles are made.

RAFTERS

Built from square columns. There are a total of 6,134 rafters in the entire temple. The tip of every upper rafter is a colour painting of the swastika whereas the lower tip is engraved with a meniscus shape painting.

PAINTED BEAMS

Painted beams are cross beams which had been ornamented. The Sino-architecture has been well known for its vibrant colours, bold pigmentation, sharp colouration and strong contrasts. Therefore, temple and regal buildings have been adopting a passionate, joyous and abundant colour scheme. There are painted beams at Thean Hou Hall, Bell and Drum Tower, Foursquare Pavilion and the memorial archway. There are all together 227 painted beams in the temple, totaling 3,140 feet. The painted beams in Thean Hou Temple are formed by fang xin (central portion), zao tou(intermediate portion) and gu tou (end portion). Gu tou at the outermost and separated by two vertical lines and with sitting dragon in between. Zao tou is adjacent to gu tou, separated by two zigzag vinculum with a descended dragon in between. Fang xin is located in between the two zao tous and forms the biggest area of the beam.

DOUGONG (BRACKET SET)

Bracket set, or dougong, is a special form in ancient Chinese architecture. It is a connecting part between the columns and the roof for larger buildings. Its function is to support the extended eaves of the structure so that the weight can be concentrated at the columns, or be directed to the architrave, before spreading to the columns. On the appearance, dougong often exudes a sense of mystery and profound secrecy. From the angles of art, aesthetics and technics, dougong is a quintessential representation of the spirit and ethos of ancient Chinese architecture. The dougongs in Thean Hou Temple are painted in blue with a white border. They are piled up and arranged neatly under the eaves. There are a total of 470 sets of dougongs in the temple, spread over the eaves on Thean Hou Hall, memorial archway, Bell and Drum Tower, scripture pavilion, martial pavilion and the eaves outside the ballroom. The protruding part of the dougong is known as shuatou (nose), presenting a stereo dragonhead in green. On its sides are ‘bracket cushioning slabs’ with the carving of a semistereo flame bead, symbolizing auspice.

CAISSON CEILING

In the middle of the ceiling in Thean Hou Hall, there is an incurvate dome with the shape of a baldachin. It is known as a caisson ceiling. Caisson ceiling has long been renowned as a type of complex decorative technic of ancient Chinese architecture. Caisson ceilings come in the shapes of round, square, oval, spiral-convolution and bagua etc. There are two types of caisson ceilings in Thean Hou Temple, is the round type and the square type. Diameter of the round caisson ceiling is 18 feet. The tip of the smallest circle features a snugged dragon, hanging a chandelier from her mouth. The second circle from centre showcases 24 pineapple-flower-shaped lamp holders. Base of the lamp holders releases red strips, which in turn support a yellowbase annular baldachin with green leaves and red flowers. The pineapple-flower-shaped lamp holders further expands outward and the circles get bigger. Decorative items include 96 lotus lamps and 120 Mazu figurines. The origin of the 24 strips are 24 archaic lion sculptures. In between every 2 lions there is one Mazu figurine, as if the lions are protecting Mazu. On both sides of the round plafond are two rectangular plafonds. Each plafond also features lotus lamps, Mazu figurines and archaic lions. All Mazu figurines in the round and rectangular plafonds and 8 auspicious cranes neighbouring the round plafond, plus the snugged dragon in the central dome, are embellished with pure gold coils.

DRAGON COLUMNS

A total of four dragon columns in Thean Hou Temple are located in front of Thean Hou Hall. Measuring at 15 in height, they are sculptured from cement. Dragons on the columns embrace around the columns. Heads of the dragons are situated at about one third of the columns height, with a gesture of soaring up. All four columns are sprayed in the granite colour looking more elegant and refined, while preserving their original style.

BALUSTRADE

The reason that balustrade became an integral part of ancient Chinese architecture is its inseparable relationship with the stylobate. The balustrade always follows the stylobate. And the shape and design of the stylobate often rely on the balustrade. At some endpoints of some balustrades, their shapes vary distinctly. Normally on top of a few layers of rolling petals there would be a round ‘drum-embracing stone’. These structures are often at the beginning and end of balustrades, also demonstrating the spirit of Sino-architectural structure – ‘where there is a beginning, there is an end’. Balustrades in Thean Hou Temple are of the Qing Dynasty design. There are a total of 286 rails of balustrades in the temple. The balustrade walls are approximately 6 feet in length and 4 inches in width. The front and back of the dahua slabs are carved with a pair of kirins. (qilin).

The capitals, on the other hand, are sculpted with snugged dragons. The vase-shape item in the centre of the balustrade is known as ‘cloud bracket’ (yungong). Normally position of the cloud bracket is at the catercorner of the capitals, so that design of the balustrade could be at its equilibrium.

PLAFOND

There are two types of square plafond in Thean Hou Temple, namely the dragon-phoenix plafond and the heyun plafond. The dragon-phoenix plafonds are embellished with golden foils and the heyun ones are without. On both sides of the corridor shelter located between the temple’s entrance archway and ballroom, there is a type of wooden, oval yuegongduo plafond. With a semi-circular shape, it is one of the more unique plafonds in Thean Hou Temple.

SPARROW BRACE

There are two types of braces in Thean Hou Temple, ie sparrow braces and small sparrow braces. These uniquely designed sparrow braces are carved from cement, decorated with prismatic colours. On the frontage of the ballroom, there are also wooden sparrow braces.

SPIRITUAL & CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

Thean Hou Temple is not just a place of worship; it’s also a cultural hub. The temple often hosts festivals and events, especially during Chinese New Year and the MidAutumn Festival, where vibrant lanterns and decorations transform the temple grounds into a colorful spectacle. If you’re visiting during one of these festivals, you’ll get a chance to witness traditional Chinese performances, lion dances, and even calligraphy exhibitions. The temple is also a popular destination for weddings, particularly traditional Chinese-style ceremonies. On weekends, you might stumble upon a couple exchanging vows in a grand setting surrounded by family and friends, adding to the vibrant and joyful atmosphere.

WHAT TO SEE IN THEAN HOU TEMPLE

1. The Guan Yin Statue

The statue of the God of Mercy, Guan Yin, which sits directly next to the entryway, is a must-see when visiting the temple. Guan Yin is a Buddhist bodhisattva who represents compassion. A smaller statue of Guan Yin can also be found to the right of the prayer hall, surrounded by rocks and falling water. You may kneel before the statue and receive a water blessing.

2. The 12 Zodiac Animals Garden

On the left side of the main structure is the Chinese Zodiac garden. You’ll see the sculptures of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals here. Zodiac legend has its roots in the Han Dynasty. The 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac is represented by a different animal in which each animal has its own qualities and personality. According to legends, you will inherit the personality of the animal’s representation in the year of your birth.

3. The Tortoise Pond and Wishing Well

Many children enjoy looking at the numerous tortoises in the pond, and Buddhists who cross the Fortune Bridge may receive a blessing from monks in the form of holy water splashed on them for luck.

4. The Fiery Dragon

When one arrives at the temple shrine, one will be astounded by the pagoda roofing and columns with dragon motifs. The panoramic view of the temple set against the skyline of Kuala Lumpur is also ideal for unwinding.

5. The Lanterns at Night

Thean Hou’s temple is illuminated at night and is open until very late. Even better, if you visit during Chinese New Year, the entire temple is decked out in colourful lanterns and puts on a spectacular display.

This clinic is nestled in a secluded region and plays a crucial role in providing healthcare services to the local population. The team explored innovative initiatives such as the Sembanglah, Ini Aman dan Rahsia (S.I.N.A.R) program, which provides accessible mental health support through physical suggestion boxes and AIpowered chatbot counselling.

They also learned about the implementation of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) kits to improve maternal care and manage emergencies effectively. Additionally, the cloud-based clinical management system (CCMS) was demonstrated to everyone, highlighting the importance of digital health in increasing access to healthcare for remote populations.

Reflecting on the mission, Dr Rabindra Abeyasinghe remarked "As WHO, our goal is to understand the unique health challenges faced by the communities and work together with local authorities to develop sustainable solutions. This mission of Perak has been a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in improving public health."

FOOD & RESTAURANTS OF MALAYSIA

Malaysian Favourites Are Beautifully Reinvented At TANBURI @

HYATT CENTRIC CITY CENTRE KUALA LUMPUR

Food is as varied as the people who make it. However, there’s nothing more comforting than indulging in familiar flavours that remind us of home. Whether it is chicken tandoori or roti canai, these iconic dishes never cease to satisfy our cravings, yet still leave us wanting more. But what if we told you that there’s a new restaurant in town that not only brings you recognisable tastes, but transforms them into something new, but just as delicious?

Introducing TanBuri, the first tandoori-inspired concept kitchen at Hyatt Centric City Centre Kuala Lumpur that features three custom-built tandoori charcoal ovens. This simple, yet genius choice reinvents traditional flavours, inspiring in you a sense of wonder and awe without making you leave your comfort zone.

Though it is located in a hotel, you may think that this is a restaurant reserved for special occasions only – but that couldn’t be further from the truth. TanBuri features a laid-back café-like vibe, filled with bright colours for your eyes to feast on. And if you are in the mood for a hot cup of coffee, this place fits the bill, with its central island bar dishing out all kinds of drinks, ranging from teh tarik to mango lassi, and even wine and beer.

TanBuri begins by offering you delicious breakfast sets, from 7am to 11am, letting you start the day right with nasi lemak pandan tandoori chicken, breakfast nanini, and an all-day roti canai. The menu items start from as low as RM12, which is amazing! Noticing how affordable the fare is was a great start to our recent experience there. Of course, being offered a Malaysian staple meal, we had to go for the roti canai – not only did it hit all the right spots for a roti canai, it features a crackling, crunchy texture unlike any we’ve tried before, a textural improvement only made possible by the use of the aforementioned tandoori oven. Pair this up with a hefty serving of dhal, sambal, and chicken curry, and we found ourselves wanting more. It was lunch when we arrived at the venue, so we were craving some

rice. Luckily, TanBuri offers a wide variety of rice bowls, ranging from mushroom and beef, to prawn and lamb, which were all an explosion of flavours on their own. Regardless of your choice of protein, the bowls are packed with various fruits, veggies, and sauces that perfectly complement each other, making each bite more enjoyable than the last. We also opted for the nanini, a shawarma-like wrap covered in TanBuri’s in-house naan. Much like their rice bowls, the nanini was packed with decadent and complementing vegetables that made each bite a perfect balance of savoury and salty. Unfortunately, since the base they use is naan, it’s quite a heavy meal by itself.

Furthermore, as the thick naan was the wrapper, the nanini began falling apart as we picked it up to eat, even with the inserted pick. Though it was a nice meal, it didn’t reinvent much, like the rice bowls or the canai mentioned previously. That is, of course, with the filling stuffed inside the naan. TanBuri prides itself on its artisan naan bread. We could have easily eaten a whole platter of it by itself thanks to its buttery notes. However, it was a special menu item that came with the butter chicken, and these two were a match made in heaven.

The naan became the perfect platform for the rich chicken and sauce, a combination that we instantly fell in love with. It’s a daily special, so be sure to snag it whenever you can. Any and all of these items pair nicely with the restaurant’s wide variety of drinks to suit your taste. They range from Indian favourites to coffee, tea, soda, kombucha, juices, teh tarik, juices and more.

If you’re looking to get some alcohol in your system, TanBuri also has an equally extensive selection of wines, beer, and liquor. We must also mention that this was only the tip of the iceberg. There were many more items that we didn’t get the opportunity to try, such as the in-house soft ice cream, bubble tea, tandoori platter, and more. Whether you are looking for a quick bite to eat on the run at the bar counter, a leisurely meal indoors, or a nightcap after a full day of activities, this vibrant café has something to offer everyone.

Diners are invited to observe chefs in action as they expertly prepare robust, flavourful dishes in the tandoor ovens in the open kitchen. With a maximum capacity of 50 people, TanBuri offers a memorable and captivating dining experience that blends creativity and tradition.

SPORTS & YOUTH AFFAIRS OF MALAYSIA

LEE CHONG WEI Malaysia’s Badminton Legend

Lee Chong Wei, born on October 21, 1982, in Bagan Serai, Perak, Malaysia, is widely regarded as one of the greatest badminton players in history. His journey from a small-town boy to a global sports icon is a testament to talent, resilience, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, Lee captivated fans with his lightning-fast reflexes, impeccable technique, and fierce competitive spirit, earning him the nickname “Dato’ Lee” and a permanent place in badminton’s hall of fame.

EARLY LIFE AND RISE TO STARDOM

Growing up in a modest family, Lee discovered badminton at the age of 11. His natural talent was evident early on, and by 17, he was selected to join Malaysia’s national badminton team. Under the guidance of coaches like Misbun Sidek, Lee honed his skills, blending speed, agility, and precision into a formidable playing style. In 2004, he won his first major title at the Malaysia Open, signalling his arrival on the international stage. By 2006, he had cracked the world’s top 10 rankings, setting the stage for a remarkable career.

DOMINANCE AND RIVALRIES

Lee Chong Wei’s career peaked during the late 2000s and 2010s, a period when he dominated men’s singles badminton. He held the world No. 1 ranking for a record 199 consecutive weeks from 2008 to 2012, showcasing his consistency and prowess. His playing style—marked by explosive smashes, deft net play, and relentless court coverage—made him a fan favourite. His most iconic rivalry was with China’s Lin Dan, a two-time Olympic gold medallist. Their matches, often dubbed the “Lin-Lee” showdowns, were epic battles that defined an era.

The 2008 and 2012 Olympic finals, both won by Lin Dan, remain among the most memorable in badminton history. Despite the losses, Lee’s ability to push Lin Dan to the limit earned him immense respect. He also faced tough competition from players like Chen Long and Taufik Hidayat, yet consistently remained a top contender.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND LEGACY

Lee’s trophy cabinet is a testament to his greatness. He won 46 Superseries titles, the most by any men’s singles player, and secured three silver medals at the Olympics (2008, 2012, 2016), making him Malaysia’s most decorated Olympian. He also claimed three Commonwealth Games gold medals and multiple Thomas Cup and Sudirman Cup contributions for Malaysia.

His 2010 Asian Games silver medal further cemented his status as a continental powerhouse. Beyond statistics, Lee’s impact transcended the court. In Malaysia, he became a national hero, inspiring a generation of athletes. His humility, work ethic, and sportsmanship endeared him to fans worldwide. Even in defeat, such as the heartwrenching 2016 Olympic final loss to Chen Long, Lee’s grace under pressure shone through.

CHALLENGES AND RESILIENCE

Lee’s career wasn’t without setbacks. A doping scandal in 2014, where he tested positive for a banned substance (later attributed to a medical treatment), led to an eight-month ban. Cleared of intentional doping, Lee returned stronger, reclaiming the world No. 1 spot in 2015. In 2018, a diagnosis of nose cancer forced him to confront his toughest opponent yet. After undergoing treatment in Taiwan and making a remarkable recovery, Lee attempted a comeback but ultimately retired in June 2019, citing health concerns.

LIFE AFTER RETIREMENT

Since retiring, Lee has remained active in badminton and public life. He runs the Lee Chong Wei Badminton Academy in Malaysia, nurturing young talent, and serves as a mentor and ambassador for the sport. In 2023, he was inducted into the Badminton World Federation’s Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his contributions. Lee also engages in philanthropy, supporting cancer awareness and youth development initiatives.

On a personal note, Lee is a devoted family man. Married to former badminton player Wong Mew Choo, he is a father to three children. His autobiography, Dare to Be a Champion, and the 2018 biopic Lee Chong Wei: Rise of the Legend offer glimpses into his journey, resonating with fans who admire his perseverance.

A LASTING IMPACT

Lee Chong Wei’s story is one of near-misses and towering triumphs. While the elusive Olympic gold remained out of reach, his legacy is defined not by what he didn’t win but by what he achieved against all odds. He elevated badminton’s global profile, put Malaysia on the sporting map, and showed the world what it means to fight with heart. As he once said, “I don’t play for fame or money; I play for my country and my passion.” For millions of fans, Lee Chong Wei will always be a champion.

It is the highest Taoist temple in Negeri Sembilan, located at the top of Wu Gong Hill. Due to this, older people may find taking the stairs to this temple quite challenging, but a breathtaking view of the entire Seremban awaits atop the temple.

According to a legend, God transformed a man into a rocking ship that could never sail and dumped him on Wu Gong Hill. His mother, believed to be reincarnated as a centipede, went, and lived beside the rock, which led to the massive stone centipede and temple’s name. If you manage to find a centipede in the temple compound, it is said that you will be blessed with good luck and wealth. Aside from religious activities and the town’s beautiful scenery, children can also feed the fish, tortoises, and rabbits in the temple.

In a nutshell, this park is worth the visit for families. It is not only a great hangout space, but a good space for everyone to sweat it out, with the hike and all.

Tips

A good time to visit the park would be in the early mornings between 7 – 9am before the sun gets too hot. Late afternoons between 5 – 7pm are also good to visit. Don’t forget to wear light clothing and appropriate shoes, especially for the hike up to the park. Bring some water too! Where is it?

The Dinosaur Park is located at Hill Park Seremban 2 at S2 Heights, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. Opening hours are from 6.30am – 9pm and there is no entrance fee.

Negeri Sembilan State Mosque

The Negeri Sembilan State Mosque, located 65 kilometres south of Kuala Lumpur in Seremban, was built to replace the inadequate Jamek Mosque, which could no longer serve the expanding number of worshippers. Built in response to Seremban’s fast expansion in the early 1960s, the new mosque can accommodate up to 1,500 worshippers. Its remarkable nine-sided polygon design, crowned with a parasol roof, represents the state’s nine districts, which also contributes to its name.

The mosque has a main prayer hall, a female gallery, conference rooms, eating halls and ablution facilities. Surrounded by the verdant Seremban Lake Garden, it is easily visible and serves as an important entrance point to the city.

To get to Negeri Sembilan State Mosque

Car: The Negeri Sembilan State Mosque is just a 4-minute drive from the Seremban town centre. Parking is available on the mosque grounds, making it easily accessible for both worshippers and guests.

E-hailing: Alternatively, e-hailing services like Grab are available from the town centre too.

Gunung Mat Cincang @ Langkawi

TRAVEL & TOURISM

Gunung Mat Cincang is probably Langkawi’s best-known mountain, aside from its neighbour Gunung Raya. At 850 m high, it is the second highest mountain in Langkawi and offers some pretty spectacular views of the island. It is home to the famous cable car that carries passengers 709 m above sea level to the apex. Besides enjoying the spectacular views of the forested and craggy sides of Mount Cincang, on a clear day you can see all the way to the mainland and southwest Thailand. Besides that, at the top of Gunung Mat Cincang you can also have some snacks and refreshments as there are food stalls available to your need. The histories of Gunung Mat Cincang and Gunung Raya are deeply connected and firmly rooted in legend. The story goes that once upon a time there were two giants named Mat Cincang and Mat Raya: though they were extremely close friends, one day at the wedding reception of their children, the two got into a squabble. Each grabbed items nearest to them (pots and pans) to throw at the other. In the middle of the mêlée a number of famous spots around Langkawi were created. A pot of gravy fell in Kuah Town, thus resulting in its name (which means gravy in Malay), a bowl of hot water fell in Ayer Hangat (hot water) and a jar was broken in Belanga Pecah (broken crockery).

HISTORY OF GUNUNG MAT CINCANG

The lore of Gunung Mat Cincang is as captivating as its visage. According to local legend, the mountain was once a giant called Mat Cincang who transformed into the landform after a fierce battle with another giant, Gunung Raya, over a wedding dispute. Geologically speaking, Gunung Mat Cincang's history is a testament to our planet's primordial past. This mountain, along with the rest of the archipelago, was formed through the centuries-old tectonic processes that sculpted the region's landscape. Furthermore, the mountain and its environs are part of the Langkawi Geopark, recognized by UNESCO in 2007, showcasing the island's outstanding geological heritage that includes an ancient sea, folded rocks, and fossilized life forms. Did you know that within this mountain range lies the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls—also known as Seven Wells Waterfalls— which is infused with folklore and considered to be a mystical place? There's something truly magical about understanding the connection between the land you're standing on and the countless stories that have travelled through time, both fact and

folklore woven together to give Gunung Mat Cincang its unique character. When the two giants finally came to their senses and realized what a mistake, they had made by fighting with each other, they decided to atone for their mistakes by being turned into mountains. Mat Sawar, the mediator for the warring duo, was turned into a small hill (Gunung Mat Sawar) and placed between the two great mountains to ‘watch’ over them in the years to come.

Echoes of its mythical past are lingered in the names of places and in the traditional stories passed down through generations.
