ROBUST INFRASTRUCTURE & POSITIVE INDUSTRIAL CLIMATE
ENABLED ACCELERATED GROWTH IN BENGALURU'
“Proactive Government, Robust infrastructure, Dual industrial access, Positive industrial climate and Everlasting Investors Trust are the Notable Ingredients for the Adorable Growth & Development of Bengaluru and Karnataka”
Bengaluru greeted as India’s “Silicon-Valley,” stands as a shining example of how robust infrastructure, dual industrial access, and a positive industrial climate can propel a region towards accelerated growth and economic prosperity. While the city’s success is well-documented, the underlying factors that have fostered this environment and the policies implemented by the Karnataka government deserve closer examination. The Bedrock of growth of Bengaluru is the Robust infrastructure: Bengaluru’s rise as a global economic hub is inextricably linked to its robust infrastructure development.
Connectivity: The city boasts an extensive network of roads, railways, and a modern airport, facilitating efficient movement of goods, services, and people. The Kempegowda International Airport, for instance, is one of India’s busiest, handling approximately 35 million passengers annually. Transportation Systems: The Namma Metro, a rapid transit system, has eased traffic congestion and enhanced intra-city connectivity. Further expansion of the metro network promises to unlock new growth corridors and alleviate pressure on the existing infrastructure.
Industrial Estates and SEZs: The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) and Karnataka State Industrial Investment Development Corporation (KSIIDC) have developed numerous industrial areas and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the state, providing dedicated spaces for manufacturing and businesses. This includes specialized zones like the biotech park and IT/ITES clusters in Electronic City and Whitefield, Bengaluru.
Dual Industrial Access: A Strategic advantage: Karnataka’s industrial success is also driven by its “dual industrial access,” a strategy that recognizes the unique strengths of both the traditional manufacturing
sector and the burgeoning technology and knowledge-based industries. Leveraging Strengths: While Bengaluru is the undisputed leader in Information Technology and Biotechnology, Karnataka also has a strong foundation in traditional industries such as machine tools, textiles, garments, and agriculture. This diverse industrial base creates a resilient economy less vulnerable to fluctuations in any single sector.
Creating Synergies: The presence of both traditional and modern industries fosters a unique synergy, with technology-driven innovations often finding applications in traditional manufacturing processes, leading to increased efficiency and competitiveness. Regional Development: Policies like the New Industrial Policy 2020-25 aim to promote balanced industrial development across the state by encouraging growth in Tier II and Tier III cities. This strategy not only creates employment opportunities in different regions but also leverages the specific strengths and resources available in those areas.
Fostering a Positive Industrial Climate: The Karnataka government has played a crucial role in creating a positive and enabling environment for businesses and investors. Supportive Policies: Karnataka was among the first states to implement an industrial policy, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to industrial growth. The latest Karnataka Industrial Policy 2025-30, for example, aims to attract substantial investments, create millions of jobs, and promote sustainable manufacturing and advanced industries. Ease of Doing Business: The government has introduced reforms to streamline the approval process, including single-window clearances and incentives for developers. It also emphasizes ease of doing business, which is critical for attracting investment and encouraging entrepreneurship.
EDITOR -IN - CHIEF From The Desk Of
Skill Development and Innovation: Karnataka has a strong focus on developing a skilled workforce to cater to the needs of its diverse industries. It has also emerged as a powerhouse of innovation, with numerous R&D centers, universities, and a thriving startup ecosystem, fostering a culture of technological advancement. Fiscal Incentives: The state offers a range of fiscal and policy incentives, including capital subsidies, production-linked incentives, and tax exemptions, to attract new investments and encourage expansion in key sectors.
Overcoming Challenges and Focused on the Path Forward: The Government of Karnataka is highly determined and focused on analyzing the actual conditions that may cause the slowdown of it enormous success achieved through rapid industrialization and modernization of Bengaluru and Karnataka. Hence, its carefully examining each and every potential factors that need to be addressed and resolved. The Government’s well established Administrative System and Digitalization Mechanism combined with the strong and Intellectual Manpower Force, who are positioned at all levels of their Government, Governance, Management and Administration; they have been uplifting both Bengaluru and Karnataka in a manner that it could face any challenges and to keep up their sustainable progressive growth records and momentum.
Government of Karnataka, having realized the need and importance to overcome the Infrastructure Bottlenecks; Such as growing Traffic congestion, strain on public transport, and occasional water shortages on account of the rapid pace of growth with regard to Bengaluru’s infrastructure developments; Setting up Various meaningful and purposeful High Level Committees, who are working around the clock to streamline the Traffic Conditions, Increasing Road, Rail and Transportation Infrastructures, Accelerating and implementing Mass and Public Transportation Mechanism, Creating Different and Numerous Layers of Infrastructures and Devising Cooperative Mechanisms with Industries, Institutions and Corporates to work out of amenable and differential work timings, in order to leverage traffic movements, timings and so on.
In addition, Government of Karnataka have been sincerely addressing the Environmental Concerns and sorting out the probable air pollution and environmental degradation by addressing and evolving suitable, sustainable and implementable solutions.
It’s quite evident that Bengaluru’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse is a testament to the synergistic impact of robust infrastructure, dual industrial access and a positive industrial climate. By strategically investing in connectivity, fostering a diverse industrial base, and implementing supportive policies, Karnataka has created abundant ground for businesses and innovation. Indeed, ‘Incredible Karnataka’s’ proactive approach and commitment to industrial growth, positioned it as a key driver of India’s economic progress and set a perfect model for other aspiring regions of ‘Mighty India’.

Tamannaah Bhatia STUNS IN A PURPLE
KANJEEVARAM SARI BY JADE
BY MONICA & KARISHMA

When timeless elegance meets contemporary sensibility, the result is often spectacular. Tamannaah Bhatia recently proved this sartorial truth in the most regal manner possible by donning a luxurious Kanjeevaram sari from JADE by Monica & Karishma’s new ‘Baraati Edit’. Rich in heritage and craftsmanship, the ensemble was not just a style statement—it was a celebration of Indian textiles, culture, and femininity. The sari, woven in Karnataka, carries centuries of tradition in every inch of its fabric. The Kanjeevaram, renowned as the “Queen of Silks”, is a textile that commands respect for its durability, gleam, and intricate weave. What makes Tamannaah’s sari particularly striking is its majestic purple hue—a colour historically linked to royalty, power, and spirituality. It isn’t just a shade; it’s a statement. Purple, when combined with the luminous luster of Kanjeevaram silk, results in an aesthetic that is opulent, powerful, and serene all at once.

The Kanjeevaram sari has long held its status as one of the most celebrated textiles in Indian fashion. Known for its exquisite weave, luxurious texture, and lustrous finish, it has been a staple in every South Indian bride’s trousseau. What sets this version apart is the lightness of the drape—JADE by Monica & Karishma have reimagined the traditionally heavy Kanjeevaram for the modern woman, offering a blend of comfort and grandeur. The rich purple hue of Tamannaah’s sari carries deep cultural significance. Associated with royalty and spirituality in Indian tradition, purple evokes a sense of mystique and sophistication. When rendered on Kanjeevaram silk, the colour’s vibrancy is heightened, giving the fabric a radiant, almost ethereal quality.
Tamannaah styled her look with a structured, tailored blouse that featured a delicate zari lace border—minimalistic yet impactful. The sleek silhouette of the blouse provided the perfect contrast to the sari’s ornate texture. Her accessories, sourced from Maya Sanghavi Jewels, struck the ideal balance between traditional and contemporary. A bold statement choker commanded attention, while layered bangles, studded earrings, and rings added subtle sparkle, allowing the sari to remain the focal point.
Her beauty look was understated, yet impactful. She chose a dewy complexion that highlighted her natural features, soft pink lips that brought a freshness to the face, and a sleek, middle-parted bun adorned with fresh jasmine flowers. The inclusion of gajra wasn’t just an aesthetic decision—it was a cultural nod to South Indian bridal traditions, where fragrant flowers are symbolic of auspiciousness and celebration.

For those inspired by Tamannaah’s ensemble and seeking to recreate the look, fashion editors suggest opting for a half sari—a classic South Indian outfit that offers structure with flexibility. Comprising a voluminous skirt, a draped dupatta, and a fitted blouse, the half sari allows for creative expression through textures and colour. For example, pairing a heavy Kanjeevaram or Banarasi brocade skirt with a lighter dupatta in chiffon, Chanderi, or organza can create a stunning visual balance. Using contrasting colours—like emerald and coral or royal blue and mustard—can further elevate the ensemble, making it ideal for festive or wedding occasions.
Tamannaah’s look beautifully bridges heritage with haute couture. It’s proof that traditional Indian fashion is not static—it evolves, adapts, and continues to inspire. With designers like Monica & Karishma championing this narrative and style icons like Tamannaah embodying it so effortlessly, the sari remains as relevant today as it has ever been—an eternal symbol of grace, beauty, and culture.

Disha Madan @ Cannes 2025
Reviving a Forgotten Chettinad Weave in Regal Kanjivaram

When the red carpet of Cannes Film Festival 2025 unrolled, it carried with it not just a parade of celebrities and designers, but also a piece of Indian heritage. Kannada actress and influencer Disha Madan made her red carpet debut with a statement that transcended fashion. Draped in a stunning vermilion Kanjivaram saree, Madan revived a forgotten Chettinad weave and brought the soul of South Indian tradition to the global stage. Her outfit was more than just a style moment—it was a cultural resurrection, a tribute, and a deeply personal offering wrapped in silk and gold.

The actress’s sartorial choice was born out of a longing to honour her roots and tell a story. Her debut look at Cannes drew inspiration from a sepia-toned photograph taken at a 1950s Chettinad wedding. The saree she wore was meticulously handwoven over 400 hours by master artisans near Chettinad. It was dyed in sacred vermilion red and detailed with classic gold peacock motifs—a symbolic representation of grace and prosperity. This heirloom-style saree had no contrasting borders, no extraneous embellishments. It stood as a seamless expanse of traditional silk artistry, reflecting the quiet opulence of a bygone era. But Madan didn’t stop there. She gave this heritage weave a modern spin, fusing tradition with contemporary elegance. She paired the saree with an off-shoulder corset blouse hand-embroidered in gold thread, striking a delicate balance between the old and the new.

A flowing red dupatta, draped dramatically, accentuated the grandeur of her ensemble. Completing her look were pieces of statement emerald jewellery, offset by bold, dramatic eye makeup. The result was a vision that was both regal and refreshingly relevant—one that turned heads and captured hearts on the red carpet.
“This is not just fashion,” Madan wrote in a caption accompanying a video of her red carpet moment. “It is memory worn. Tradition reimagined. And a red carpet moment that speaks in the quiet, eternal language of our roots.” These words weren’t mere sentiment. They echoed a conviction that ran through every thread of her ensemble. It was clear that for Disha Madan, this appearance wasn’t just about making a style statement—it was about representing a legacy. In her own words, the experience of walking the Cannes red carpet was “very special and very close” to her heart. “I feel everyone who goes to a global stage like this should remember where they come from,” she said. The pride in her voice was unmistakable as she talked about her journey and the responsibility she felt toward her people. “Representing and remembering our roots is very important, and for me, it is a very special feeling. I am deeply connected to the people of Karnataka. My people have always encouraged me day in and day out. Paying a tribute to them, the city and state that I come from is a responsibility I carry with me, and it is a very special moment.”
Indeed, Disha’s Cannes debut was more than a fashion outing—it was an act of storytelling. It was about reclaiming space for a forgotten weave, for the quiet artistry of South Indian craftspeople, and for a cultural aesthetic often overshadowed on global runways. “The second I got the call that I had been invited, the vision for me was to always represent where I am from,” she said. And she lived up to that vision with a level of authenticity and intention that was both inspiring and impactful.
The making of the saree itself was an odyssey. Madan recounted discovering the inspiration for the piece in a palace in Chettinad, where a painting of a lady in a vintage pink saree caught her eye. The painting was more than just art—it was a relic of style, a window into a world long past. From there, the team began recreating the saree, translating the artistic memory into wearable fashion. “It’s a very intricate saree,” she explained. “So
much work has gone into this—it took 400 hours of work. We had four different masters work on it.” Crafting a Kanjivaram saree to suit the silhouette of a Western-style outfit was no easy task. The Kanjivaram, known for its thickness and structure, is not the most forgiving fabric when it comes to fusion fashion. But Madan and her team were undeterred. The result? A perfectly tailored look that did justice to the saree’s cultural weight while making it palatable and powerful for a red carpet known for bold international couture.
Even before the main red carpet appearance, Madan’s Cannes wardrobe carried threads of her identity. She wore a Mysore silk saree in a pre-event reveal video, followed by another look in a yellow and blue Kanjeevaram. But the pièce de résistance was the red and gold ensemble woven from a 70-year-old design. It stood as a testament to craftsmanship, heritage, and the endurance of tradition.

Disha Madan is no stranger to the limelight. A social media star and actress, she rose to fame with her win on the reality TV show Dancing Star, and later featured in popular Kannada TV serials such as Kulavadhu, Humble Politician Nograj, and Laxmi Nivasa. She also made her film debut in French Biriyani in 2020. But Cannes 2025 marked a different kind of milestone— one that allowed her to merge her celebrity status with her cultural consciousness. By choosing to highlight a forgotten weave from Tamil Nadu’s Chettinad region and presenting it through the lens of Kannada identity, Madan bridged cultures while celebrating regional pride. Her appearance at Cannes has sparked renewed interest in traditional weaves and the stories they tell, encouraging a younger generation to explore and wear their heritage with pride. At a time when fashion is often defined by fleeting trends and international labels, Disha
Madan reminded the world that style can be soulful. That a saree—woven with intention, dyed with reverence, and styled with respect—can be more powerful than any haute couture gown. Her walk on the red carpet was more than just a strut—it was a tribute to Karnataka, to Chettinad, and to every artisan whose hands keep India’s textile heritage alive.
In an industry where appearances often outweigh purpose, Disha Madan has proven that true elegance lies in remembering who you are and where you come from. And as the cameras flashed and the crowd looked on, one thing was clear: she wasn’t just wearing a saree—she was wearing history.

MANIPAL HOME THAT BRINGS
Alive Traditional Indian
Craftsmanship

Ayoung family of four reached out to design firm Vriksh to conceptualize the interiors and exterior of their new 4,000-square-feet bungalow in Manipal, Karnataka. The client, Hari Prasad, was moving back to his hometown with his wife and 11-year-old twin children after having lived in Dubai for over two decades, in a bid to live closer to their family. His only brief to the designers? That their home reflect their cultural roots.
The villa is located in the heart of Manipal, a beautiful hilltop town that offers views of the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Named after the client’s grandmother, Vanaja, the bungalow features a tiny courtyard, and is a celebration of local materials and Indian craftsmanship. While the property primarily showcases a South Indian design aesthetic, it also celebrates Rajasthani crafts.
MANIPAL HOME: NATURAL MATERIALS
The home features a minimal colour scheme and a natural material palette. “We inherited the structure with a small courtyard in the centre and that became our starting point. We decided to use a palette of all natural materials. For instance, we used locally available laterite for the external walls, and random rubble stone from quarries for the boundary walls. For the interiors, we used Jaisalmer stone for the flooring, which complements the laterite. Handcrafted pillars made from local Karkalla granite adorn the courtyard to set the mood of the home,” says Sonal Shetty Rao, creative partner at Vriksh. “The false ceilings in the living areas that imitate the ceilings in traditional Mangalore homes were all made from recycled wood. The furniture in the bedrooms was custom-made at site using natural veneers for the surface finish,” she adds.

MANIPAL HOME: THE ENTRANCE FOYER
In this two-storey bungalow, guests are welcomed by a large entrance foyer, which features a handcrafted brass Ganesha studded with semi-precious stones. It is flanked by hand-carved decorative windows sourced from Jodhpur. The opposite wall depicts doors and windows seen in age-old havelis. This arresting accent wall has been handcrafted by carefully handpicked artisans in Rajasthan. A set of wood and brass seating and a false ceiling fashioned entirely out of recycled wood completes this unique space.
MANIPAL HOME: THE COURTYARD AND DINING AREA
The entrance foyer leads to the dining area and the opento-the-sky courtyard. Though the courtyard is small, it is the focal point of the home. All the spaces in the bungalow are connected to this courtyard, either physically or visually. A traditional wooden and brass swing overlooks the courtyard, making it the perfect space to curl up with a book and a cup of tea on lazy afternoons. The dining area features a sixperson rectangular dining table and chairs made of wood and handmade ceramic tiles.

MANIPAL HOME: THE FAMILY LOUNGE
The upper level of the home has a cozy family lounge that overlooks the courtyard. The family lounge features a high ceiling, custom-designed furniture and a separate study. The study space is separated from the family lounge with a partition made of wood and a Chettinad-patterned wall covering from Nilaya.
MANIPAL HOME: THE MAIN BEDROOM
The main bedroom is a warm and welcoming space and has the same traditional Indian design aesthetic as the rest of the home. The clients desired the bedrooms to be minimal compared to the shared spaces. The highlight of the main bedroom, quite evidently, is the four poster bed, which features a striking hand-carved seven-foot headboard.

MANIPAL HOME: CELEBRATION OF INDIAN CULTURE
“When we began the project, the skeleton of the home was already done. However, we had to enhance it to give it a traditional Indian look and feel. Our advice to people who want to achieve a similar design aesthetic is to use indigenous natural materials and Indian craftsmanship. Explore and celebrate your local community’s history and culture, you will not be disappointed,” says Amit Rao, managing partner at Vriksh.

Aranyani’s Creations Evoke Timeless Elegance

Aranyani, named after the Hindu goddess of the forest, is a luxury handbag brand that goes beyond fashion—it embodies a deeper spiritual and artistic philosophy. Drawing from the Rigveda’s description of the goddess Aranyani as a graceful and mysterious figure of the woodlands, the brand channels this sacred connection to nature through its collections. Just as the goddess moves unseen yet leaves an impact with her anklets and presence, Aranyani’s creations evoke a sense of timeless elegance, gentle strength, and harmony with the natural world.
Blending semi-precious stones, intricate hand embroidery, and gilded gold with contemporary shapes, Bengaluru-based handbag label Aranyani is redefining the meaning of luxury fashion in India. Founded by and helmed under the creative directorship of Haresh Mirpuri, Aranyani is creating designs inspired by deep-rooted Indian traditions and values. Following the unique concept of ‘one craftsman one bag’ wherein each bag is created entirely by a single craftsman truly makes the Aranyani bag bespoke.

About Haresh
Mirpuri, Founder & Creative Director
Haresh Mirpuri is the Founder and Creative Director of Aranyani, the luxury Indian handbag company. He began his career in the manufacturing industry in Indonesia and worked in numerous positions throughout Southeast Asia. In 1996 Haresh founded a spinning mill and soon became the most renowned
producer of open-end yarn in all of Asia. After 20 years working in manufacturing and mastering textiles, Haresh launched Aranyani to revitalize and redefine the luxury industry in India, as well as to spread Indian artistry and the message of sustainability to the world. Aranyani is the only luxury goods company in the world that owns and operates its own atelier and also trains, educates, and houses all staff members their families. Mirpuri received his MBA in 1993 from the Sri Satya Sai Institute of Higher Learning in Anantapur, India.

Aranyani’s core inspiration comes from Mr. Haresh Mirpuri’s master who commanded him, “Whatever you do here, make sure you make Bharat’s name shine.” The vision thus entails taking Bharat, the cradle of luxury, to the world at large. With that drive, Aranyani intends to set up a strong foothold globally, starting with New York through the Aranyani Discovery Event which was hosted by the Consulate General of India on the 6th of April 2022. The range of exquisite bags on display were perfect as evening wear. As the Consul put it, “Aranyani symbolises the best of India coming to New York, combining the best of both the traditional and the modern worlds.”
Each Aranyani bag is designed not only to be beautiful but also to tell a story. Their Spring/Summer 2025 collection titled “Freedom” exemplifies this artistic vision. Inspired by the textures, movement, and essence of the forest, the designs feature hand-pleated leather mimicking feathers, gold gilding that reflects sunlight through trees, mosaic craftsmanship that resembles blooming flowers, and hand-embedded precious gemstones that mirror the forest’s vibrant palette. All these elements are carefully composed to create a tactile, visual, and symbolic experience for the wearer.
In conjunction with the vision of redefining luxury, the designs span India’s multiple facets, from lush landscapes to timeless architecture. Aranyani’s global design team and craftsmen together study different rare art techniques that are almost lost or known to very few in India.

The bespoke luxury bag brand employs the heritage techniques of gold gilding, hand embroidery, hand painting and setting precious gemstones which emanate positive energies that complement their beauty. In fact, Aranyani is possibly the only brand in the world to achieve fine gold-gilding on leather. All these techniques are also coalesced into one to create timeless stand-alone pieces in certain collections. Drawing inspiration from the Vedic ideals of S.A.I.Service, Awareness, and Inclusivity, the brand believes that true luxury necessitates a positive impact at every touchpoint. It achieves it in many ways. For instance, Aranyani honors its craftspeople by including their names in the QR code on the Authenticity Card, ensuring total transparency across the value chain. Another feather in their cap is their contribution of 2% of sales for children’s education in the community and teaching the children of artisans through the Aranyani Education and Vocational Trust Fund. Aranyani has also teamed with companies that provide pollution-reduction solutions, and created a network of parklands, orchards, and green areas surrounding the atelier that are also plastic-free zones. With a strong commitment to sustainability, Aranyani wants to switch to chrome-free leather entirely by 2023 and aims to achieve zero waste by 2025.

Before its recent store launch in London, Aranyani’s luxury products were created and their styles were honed at its state-of-the-art atelier in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.
Mirpuri’s team trains side by side with craftspeople from Europe for three years before even stepping foot into the atelier. Staying close to the brand’s spirit and identity, the atelier offers a unique and world-class environment in which artisans and craftsmen can invent and collaborate. Every single handbag is a result of the collective inspiration, talent and craftsmanship of this team.
Unveiled earlier this year in London’s Mayfair was the first brand store and Haresh explains that they had been searching for a location that was cosmopolitan, have a long-standing relationship with Bharat and also embraces new concepts.
The Hidden Jewels Of Nature
The Mother of Pearl artistry embodies the vibrant expression of Freedom, central to the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, where newfound unity and harmony emerge through nature’s inspiration. Drawing from the pearlescent beauty of abalone shells, the collection reflects timeless elegance found in nature.
Pastel and vibrant colours evoke the purity and grace of the Lily, seamlessly intertwining with the strength and dynamism of the Eagle, reimagining the story of Freedom in a new light.
Crafting Freedom
The Laya Clutch is a testament to the artistry and precision of our craftsmen, where tradition meets innovation. Each piece is meticulously shaped, refined, and adorned with iridescent Mother of Pearl inlays, inspired by the fluid beauty of abalone shells. This delicate yet powerful creation embodies the essence of Freedom-a harmony of elegance and strength, mirroring the interplay of the Lily and the Eagle. Through skilled hands and time-honoured techniques, the Laya Clutch takes form, celebrating Aranyani’s commitment to heritage, craftsmanship, and nature’s timeless brilliance. This limitededition masterpiece features an opulent inlay of iridescent Mother-of-Pearl, meticulously set into a 24K gold-plated brass frame. Adding a touch of grandeur, a 24K gold-plated buckle embossed with the Aranyani monogram is molded to the frame, serving as its closure.
Mixed media mastery
Over a century ago, Pablo Picasso experimented with mixed media in art by combining materials like paper and fabric with traditional painting techniques. His piece – Still Life with Chair Caning – is a famous example of mixed media for the use of oil paint, printed oilcloth, and rope to simulate a chair seat. He and French painter Georges Braque are considered to be pioneers of mixed media during the early 20th century.
Cut to now: the same spirit has been carried into luxury craftsmanship at Aranyani. Here, a bag is not just an accessory – it’s a space for art…a surface where hand painting, embroidery, and even 24-carat gold gilding come together to tell a deeper story.
Mixed media on luxury handbags
At Aranyani, mixed media translates to blending techniques like painting, stitching, and gold gilding onto leather. Leather is a challenging material to work with. But that is also what makes it special! Using leather as a base, our artists apply handpainted patterns, fine embroidery, and — something very few in the world attempt — gold gilding. That’s right: actual gold leaf, traditionally used on palace domes and temple interiors, is now adapted by Aranyani artisans for leather. It took months of experimentation and collaboration with master craftsmen from Jaipur to perfect a paste that helps gold adhere to such a pliable surface. This isn’t about adding ornamentation for the sake of beauty. Every detail, from the brushstroke to the gold accent, is placed with intent. Whether it’s the curve of an eagle in flight or the quiet bloom of the Lily of the Valley, the story is always personal.

Through the designer’s lens
Rakhee Shenoy, a textile designer and mixed media artist who collaborates with Aranyani, puts it simply: “Mixed media is just how I think. Bringing together different textures — paint, embroidery, even gold — makes the piece more tactile, more alive. It’s not flat anymore. People want to touch it, turn it around, look closer.” Rakhee says being involved in the creative process from the very beginning, right from building the story, choosing colours, and shaping the concept, has been deeply fulfilling. “There’s one design I feel especially close to — the Eagle and the Lily of the Valley. It carries both strength and softness. I could relate to that.”

Heirlooms in the making
At Aranyani, nothing is mass-produced. Every product is high-quality, hand-made, and crafted to last, much like art that can be passed down through generations. Every stitch and surface detail speaks to a blend of skill, heritage, and imagination. The exceptional quality of Aranyani’s products is made possible by the skilled hands behind them. At our atelier, leather artisans are trained to think and work like artists. Each year, they undergo specialised upskilling under the guidance of master craftsmen from Italy, continually refining their techniques to meet the high standards of artistic expression that define Aranyani. At a time when so much feels disposable, Aranyani’s mixed media creations ask us to pause. To feel. To notice. Because when a bag becomes a canvas, it also becomes a story. Aranyani’s journey is as much about inner purpose as it is about external expression. The brand draws attention to the unseen connections between humans and nature, encouraging wearers to slow down, appreciate beauty, and choose meaning over excess. With designs that are both expressive and respectful of the environment, Aranyani redefines what it means to be a luxury brand in today’s world. In essence, Aranyani captures the poetry of the forest and translates it into wearable works of art. It is a celebration of sustainability, craftsmanship, heritage, and spiritual reverence. Every Aranyani handbag is not just a symbol of luxury—it is a tribute to the sacred beauty of the natural world, carried with pride and purpose by those who understand its deeper meaning.

MEN & WOMEN OF HONOUR KARNATAKA

SAALUMARADA THIMMAKKA The Green Crusader
Saalumarada Thimmakka is a remarkable woman from Karnataka, who is known for her outstanding contribution to the environment. She is a true inspiration for many, and her story is one that is worth sharing. Thimmakka was born in a small village in Karnataka, in a family that was not well-off. She had to drop out of school at a young age to help her family with their farming work. 114-year-old environmentalist Saalumarada Thimmakka has made herself and India proud to such an extent that even the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) knows her. The reason for her fame is that she has planted over 8,000 trees in 80 years. She has earned herself a spot in the prestigious list of BBCs 100 most influential women. She is the oldest woman on the list for planting the 8,000 trees to fill the void that had been left after she realized she could not bear children. She has also won the prestigious Padma Shri.

How it all begun?
Born in a poor family of Hulikal village in Magadi Taluk, Ramnagar, Karnataka, she never had the opportunity to go to school or have any kind of formal education. She was known by the name of Thimmaka during her childhood. She started working at an early age as a quarry labourer. In 1928 she was married to Bikkala Chikkayya who was a labourer himself. After several years of marriage when the couple could not have any children, to fill the emptiness in their life the couple decide to plant banyan trees and raise them as their kids. This is when it all started. In 1948, Thimmakka along with her husband made up their mind to plant trees from their village in Hulikal to Kudoor. Thimmakka and her husband thus commenced a journey of pure dedication, untiring, and unselfish love of planting trees and nourishing them till they bore fruit.

From Thimmakka to Saalumarada Thimmakka
Thimmaka and her husband decided to plant trees from their village to the next village, Kudoor. The choose a stretch of 4 km and there were no trees at all in the locality. Since there were plenty of banyan trees near her village the couple decided to plant the trees along the roadside. They planted 10 young banyan plants in the first year and increased the number to 15 in the second and 20 the year after. The couple not only planted them but tended them to maturity while protecting them from herbivorous animals by fencing around them with thorny bushes. Every morning after finishing their regular work the couple watered the plants as a part of their daily routine and when they used to run out of the water, they used to fetch it from nearby ponds and wells. They use to cover the whole stretch on their feet watering the plant while returning on their way back home.
They plant the young saplings during the monsoon season so that they could have adequate water for their growth. The couple went to the hardship out of sheer passion for helping the environment and humanity. This never changed their financial status but they never lamented on their poverty nor flaunted about their work.

An undying passion
Thimmakka’s husband passed away in 1991 but that did not discourage her in any way. She pursued her mission with the same determination and courage. In spite of the fact that heavy rain had washed away her house that year, she with the help of wellwishers managed to rebuild the mud house and applied for a widow pension of merely 75 rupees at that time. In Kannada language rows of trees are known as Saalumarada. It was then that Thimmakka was given the name Saalumarada Thimmakka. It was given to respect her work towards planting the trees and saving the environment, and the hardship the couple faced during the process. The management of the trees these days is taken care of by the Government of Karnataka.

Additional community services by Thimmakka
She has done much more than planting trees. She is actively involved in the state and national environmental protection campaign. Thimmakka also is involved in many other social activities. This includes building a rainwater storage tank for the annual function of her village. She has set up a trust for building up a hospital in her village. Saalumarada Thimmakka has been an active campaigner in circulating the message of afforestation. She believes every human being on earth should plant trees. She still faces a life of financial struggle. However, this never deterred her spirit from helping mankind.
Accreditations and Citations of Saalumarada Thimmakka
Saalumarada Thimmaka has been a role model for environmentalist all over the world. In 2016, BBC included her in their list of top 100 influential and inspiring women. She is a great example who showed the world how uneducated women can make a big difference to the betterment of society. She achieved all these with sheer passion and undaunted hard work.

Padma Shri Award
Thimmaka was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in the country in 2019. it is at the age of 106 that the mother of trees got the award. However, she receiving the award will be fondly remembered for a protocol violation which the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind considers as a touching moment. When the President handed over the award, Thimmakka, put her palm over the President’s forehead as a gesture of blessing.
Saalumarada Thimmakka has been honored with a number of awards and accolades for her contributions to the environment. Some of the notable awards that she has received include:
• THE NATIONAL CITIZEN’S AWARD FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA: This is the highest award given to an individual for their contributions to the environment. Thimmakka was awarded this honor in 2016 for her work in planting trees and preserving the environment.

• Green India Puraskar
• Sahara India Puraskar
There are many other awards and recognitions, Thimmakka received during her lifetime. Her inspiring journey of planting trees and her relentless dedication towards environmental conservation has been acknowledged across the country and world.

There is no end to hopes.
One might think that growing trees is not a big deal but one would know the reality of it only when they do it on their own. Thimmakka and her husband used to carry four pails of water for a distance of 4 km to water the saplings. They used whatever little resources they had to plant trees. In order to get sufficient water for the trees, they started to plant the trees during monsoon. In this way, they could get
sufficient rainwater for the saplings and the trees would have invariably taken root by the onset of the next monsoon. This became Thimmakka’s daily routine for many years though it did not help in her financial condition. Although Thimmakka did not receive a formal education, her work has been honored with the National Citizen’s Award of India. She has been recognized by the Government of India and was recently conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2019, which is the highest civilian award in the Republic of

India. There is also an environmental organization named after her in the U.S. called Thimmakka’s Resources for Environmental Education. Saalumarada Thimmakka is an individual who has brought worldwide recognition to the state of Karnataka through her incredible and massive environmental services.Recognition began to come Thimmakka’s way from the year 1995, a good 5 years after her husband, Chikkanna’s death. Chikkana too had devoted his life towards nature and had quit working to take care of his young trees. He patrolled the stretch of trees and kept the cattle away from them. Thimmakka recalls a facet of Chikkanna’s life where he used to feed the cattle that was captivated by the villagers for straying in other’s agricultural properties–a task that is often forgotten by the villagers. This mission of preserving the environment is taken forward by Thimmakka’s foster son, Sri Umesh B.N. Umesh has been planting and tending trees along the roads, schools, public places, and on the mountain and hilltops. He is also successfully running the PRITHVI BACHAO Movement. He has his own nursery and distributes plants to the farmers who are interested in growing plants.

Age is not bigger than aspirations!
In spite of receiving hundreds of awards, SaalumaradaThimmakka remains an innocent and a modest person. She is 100 plus and now and still cherishes the dream of planting more trees in future. The lone ranger’s next mission is to bring hospital close to her village, Kadur. She has been seeking the local panchayat’s approval for the construction of a hospital. A trust has been set up to secure a land and construct a hospital in the place where no medical aid is easily available. Thimmakka continues her fight against afforestation and her contributions are truly remarkable. Her instincts are evidently good as she has planted trees rich in biodiversity. Today, she is invited for every tree planting initiative in the state. With her achievements, Saalumarada Thimmakka has become a role model to the entire world.

INDUSTRIES & INVESTMENT KARNATAKA
THIS BENGALURUBASED

By leveraging AI-driven battery management systems, companies can optimise battery performance, enhance lifespan by 30%, and strategically position charging stations to meet energy demands. As India’s quick commerce and urban mobility sectors expand, keeping EV fleets running round the clock requires more than just batteries. It demands intelligence. Battery performance remains one of the biggest challenges in the EV industry. The efficiency, lifespan, and charging capabilities of batteries determine the overall success of EV adoption. AI-driven Battery Management Systems (BMS) analyse real-time battery data, including temperature, charge cycles, voltage levels, and driving patterns, to optimise energy consumption and prevent degradation. Reflecting the growing demand for AI-integrated battery solutions. By employing predictive analytics, AI can prevent battery failures, enhance safety, and extend battery lifespan by up to 30%, reducing the need for premature replacements. EMO Energy, which consults companies through its AI-powered battery management system, focuses on two primary areas: energy management and battery health prediction. Sheetanshu Tyagi, CEO of EMO Energy, in conversation with AIM, stated that EMO explores solar energy, battery storage, and grid usage for its charging stations through a comprehensive system. The Bengaluru-based startup company utilises Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models to forecast energy demand at various charging stations. It strategically positions them near dark stores to address specific energy needs. By combining vehicle data and environmental factors, such as traffic density, EMO can determine the optimal locations and quantities for charging stations.

The company claims their solution enhances battery life prediction by utilising essential data and LSTM models, forecasting battery life up to two years based on data from 7,500 batteries. It also uses Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) techniques to monitor heat concentrations in battery packs for optimal performance. Additionally, EMO says it helps dark store owners and companies like BigBasket, Blinkit and Zepto, which have partnered with them, manage energy and mobility, keeping costs low.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT & COST BENEFITS ACROSS CITIES
“Energy is the only input cost that can be systematically optimised over time,” Tyagi said. “Fuel prices, vehicle rents, labour, and real estate continue to rise annually, whereas EMO’s vertically integrated ecosystem is designed to flatten and even reduce energy costs over time.” In Tier 1 cities like Bangalore and Delhi, the baseline vehicle costs, such as
rent, fossil fuel, and workforce, are higher, which immediately gives EMO a cost advantage on the EV front. Transitioning to its energy ecosystem results in a faster payback period and greater operating leverage, the company said.
In Tier 2 cities like Mysore and Indore, although the same percentage savings apply, the absolute monetary gain per rider is lower. However, the network effect of the platform still leads to increased delivery efficiency, meaning more productive kilometres can be covered per unit of energy consumed, resulting in significantly reduced idle time. India’s ability to operate in diverse environments is a significant strength, especially in cities like Bangalore and Gurgaon, which have distinct characteristics. Factors such as energy storage and power utilisation also vary. Gurgaon’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems require higher energy and exhibit distinct patterns of solar energy. These variables significantly influence training models and determine outcomes for both riders and operations. However, Tyagi said, “The growth of quick commerce is evident, as I’ve seen the number of dark stores being set up. The focus is that by 2030, there should be almost 40,000 dark stores in India.”

RIDER DEPLOYMENT
Previously, quick commerce companies needed a dense cluster of riders per hub to meet unpredictable demand patterns, with each rider typically covering only 70 to 80 km per day. With EMO’s energy ecosystem, riders are now consistently achieving an average of 140–160 kilometres per day, Tyagi added. EMO’s partnered companies, as a result, could reduce the workforce overheads while enhancing their delivery service level agreements. The exact number of delivery kilometres can now be covered with nearly half the number of riders, the CEO said.
Fewer riders per hub also lead to lower energy usage, reduced idling, less charging downtime, and more effective utilisation of each vehicle and battery asset. Consequently, partners such as Blinkit, Zepto, and BigBasket have been able to reduce rider deployment while maintaining or improving fulfillment rates and lowering the overall

delivery cost per order, according to the company’s data. The company’s analysis works on three key parameters: voltage, current, and temperature. These factors are critical for calculating the internal resistance of various cells in a battery pack, which can contain hundreds of individual cells, Tyagi said. By using a temperature heat map and measuring the voltage drop, an internal resistance map is created, providing insights into energy loss at the anode and cathode. The team is currently focused on basic data, such as riders’ generalised locations and environmental temperatures. They plan to incorporate terrain-based data, such as gradability inputs, in the future to enhance range predictions for various routes. “We’ve seen up to a 30% difference in EV range depending on how and where a rider operates, so we’re building dynamic rider scores that factor in behaviour, charging patterns, and environment to shape financing and insurance models for the future,” Tyagi highlighted.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Tyagi highlighted two points. First, the 50 established hubs have developed operational patterns for dark stores, which vary by industry. While the frequency of restaurant operations is decreasing, dark stores continue to be a rapidly growing segment. The company’s analyses of electricity patterns revealed peak energy loads in the afternoons due to air conditioning use. He said that this insight allows for optimising battery charging based on grid-level data, seasonal variations, and location-specific factors. A machine learning model predicts the best times for solar charging, grid usage, and battery deployment for each hub. Secondly, the team is focused on scaling their infrastructure to improve battery and charger systems, integrating IoT devices along the way. At its core is a comprehensive battery lifecycle management platform that is being integrated with various OEMs.
Investors are also increasingly betting on integrated infra-tech startups. When asked what’s driving the shift from OEMs to the tech infrastructure place, Tyagi said companies across various sectors, including AI and data centres, are increasingly interested in integrating their entire infrastructure to ensure reliability. By being closely tied to the end user, the company can better manage revenue cycles and scale more effectively. He emphasises that their most significant barrier to scaling is often self-imposed, aside from external dependencies.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS OF KARNATAKA
AKSHAYA TRITIYA KARNATAKA’S GOLDEN CELEBRATION

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, holds a prominent place in the Hindu calendar as one of the most auspicious days for beginning new ventures, making charitable donations, and seeking divine blessings for unending prosperity. Falling on the third lunar day of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakha, this sacred day was celebrated across Karnataka with great fervor and spiritual enthusiasm on April 30, 2025. As temples filled with chants and hymns, gold showrooms buzzed with eager buyers, and communities came together in collective celebration, the festival showcased the essence of Karnataka’s spiritual depth and cultural vibrancy.

RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE IN KARNATAKA
In Karnataka, Akshaya Tritiya carries deep religious significance, as it is considered a highly favorable day to seek the blessings of deities like Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Parashurama. The word “Akshaya” itself means “eternal” or “never diminishing,” and acts performed on this day—be it purchasing wealth, offering prayers, or starting a new enterprise—are believed to bring lifelong prosperity and success. For devout Hindus, especially in the temple towns of Karnataka, the day is spent in intense devotion, with rituals designed to invoke divine grace for health, happiness, and abundance. Many temples across the state, particularly those in Udupi, Dharmasthala, and Bengaluru, conducted special homas and pujas, attracting thousands of devotees.

EARLY MORNING RITUALS AND TEMPLE VISITS
The day of Akshaya Tritiya in 2025 began early, with people waking before sunrise to bathe and wear traditional clothes, preparing themselves spiritually and physically for the holy rituals. Long queues were seen outside popular temples like the Dodda Ganesha Temple and the Kote Venkataramana Temple in Bengaluru, where devotees offered flowers, coconut, and sweets while reciting sacred hymns. At the revered Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, thousands of pilgrims gathered as priests performed Churnika Seva, a unique ritual known for its invocation of endless blessings. The atmosphere was spiritually charged as crowds recited Vishnu Sahasranama and Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali, hoping to attract divine favor. Meanwhile, the Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysuru also witnessed heavy footfall, with devotees thronging the hill temple in the early hours, lighting lamps, and making heartfelt offerings.
GOLD RUSH: JEWELLERY SHOWROOMS WITNESS RECORD SALES
As the day progressed, Karnataka’s cities saw a different kind of rush—one towards the glitter of gold. In urban centers like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Hubballi, jewellery showrooms witnessed unprecedented crowds as families, newlyweds, and young professionals queued up to buy gold. The belief that buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya brings unending wealth remains strong, and jewellers such as C. Krishniah Chetty, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Jos Alukkas, and Tanishq did brisk business, recording some of the highest sales in recent years. Pre-bookings had already been made weeks in advance, with popular items being gold coins inscribed with Goddess Lakshmi, delicate bangles, and temple jewellery. Retailers offered special discounts, zero making charges on select collections, and complimentary silver items, which attracted even more customers. Interestingly, this year also saw a surge in digital gold purchases,
particularly among Bengaluru’s tech-savvy crowd, who preferred app-based investments and virtual gifting over physical gold. This shift represented a growing blend of tradition and technology in Karnataka’s festive landscape.
While the cities sparkled with gold and grandeur, rural Karnataka observed the day with simplicity and devotion rooted in agricultural tradition. In farming districts such as Bagalkot, Raichur, Gadag, and Ballari, Akshaya Tritiya marked the ceremonial start of the sowing season. Farmers began the day with Bhoomi Pooja, a ritual invoking the blessings of Mother Earth, and then proceeded to plough their fields as a symbolic gesture of prosperity to come. Villages came alive with the sights and sounds of bullock carts, decorated ploughs, and festive songs that expressed the hope of a good harvest. In parts of North Karnataka, folk artists performed Harikatha and traditional puppet shows to highlight the significance of conservation and community welfare, adding a meaningful layer to the celebrations.

MARRIAGE CEREMONIES AND NEW BEGINNINGS
Akshaya Tritiya 2025 also witnessed thousands of weddings across the state, as the day is deemed a Sarva Siddhi Muhurat, meaning no separate time or astrological alignment is needed to conduct auspicious ceremonies. Wedding halls and temples in cities like Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Mandya, and Chikkamagaluru overflowed with joyous crowds. Couples tied the knot amidst Vedic chants and festive rituals, with relatives and friends celebrating under colourful mandaps decorated with jasmine and marigold. Community centers and wedding venues buzzed with music, traditional cuisine, and gifts as the sound of nadaswaram and mridangam echoed across neighbourhoods. Mass weddings were organized by social and religious organizations such as ISKCON and Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, providing financial aid and resources for underprivileged couples. These collective ceremonies symbolized the spirit of inclusion and equality that Akshaya Tritiya inspires.

CHARITABLE EVENTS AND DANA (DONATIONS)
Dana, or the act of giving, forms an essential part of Akshaya Tritiya, and this year saw an overwhelming response across Karnataka. Individuals, temples, NGOs, and even corporate bodies came together in a spirit of generosity. ISKCON Bengaluru distributed over two lakh free meals or prasadam across its multiple kitchens and outreach programs, while the Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Temple organized mass feeding drives and distributed school supplies to rural children. NGOs like Akshaya Patra and Smile Foundation held donation campaigns in various cities, collecting clothes, groceries, and educational materials for the needy. Corporates like Infosys Foundation and Wipro Cares launched healthcare initiatives in underserved districts, including mobile medical vans, free check-ups, and the distribution of essential medicines. This collective outpouring of generosity ensured that the festival’s spiritual meaning extended into real-world impact, uplifting communities across the state.

TRADITIONAL FOODS AND HOME CELEBRATIONS
Back in homes, Akshaya Tritiya was marked by the preparation of traditional dishes that reflect sweetness, abundance, and festivity. Families offered prayers to Lakshmi and Vishnu, lit oil lamps, and decorated their homes with rangoli made of rice flour and turmeric. The fragrance of Kesari Bath and Obbattu (also known as Holige) wafted through kitchens, as women prepared festive meals featuring payasa, puliyogare, chitranna, and coconut-based sweets. In North Karnataka, meals included Jolad Roti with spicy brinjal curry and lentil chutneys, all served on fresh banana leaves. Elders narrated mythological stories and encouraged children to participate in the rituals, strengthening generational bonds. Gifts were exchanged, often in the form of silver coins, sarees, or fruits, reinforcing the values of togetherness and gratitude.
CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS
Karnataka’s rich artistic traditions also came alive on Akshaya Tritiya 2025, as cultural programs, musical concerts, and dance performances were organized across cities and towns. In Bengaluru, venues such as Ranga Shankara and

Chowdiah Memorial Hall featured classical dance recitals and instrumental concerts celebrating Lakshmi’s grace and Vishnu’s glory. Apartment communities and housing societies arranged small-scale poojas and cultural events like Bhajans, Harikatha, and temple art exhibitions. In Mysuru, the Akshaya Kalotsava, an initiative by the Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy, attracted large audiences for performances in Bharatanatyam, Veena, and Carnatic vocal. Hampi and Badami, known for their temple heritage, hosted devotional music and storytelling tours that blended history with performance. These events not only enriched the festive spirit but also served as a platform for artists and artisans to showcase their talents.
Akshaya Tritiya 2025 in Karnataka was a celebration that went beyond rituals—it was a harmonious fusion of devotion, culture, commerce, and community. The day brought together people of all walks of life in the pursuit of happiness, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment. Whether through temple visits, gold purchases, mass marriages, charitable acts, or cultural performances, the festival lit up the hearts of millions. In its golden glow, Karnataka found a renewed sense of unity and purpose, reminding everyone that true prosperity lies in giving, sharing, and celebrating together.

ROYAL HERITAGE & ARCHITECTURE OF KARNATAKA

BADAMI CAVE TEMPLES
The Classic Hill Fortress Chikkaballapur In Karnataka

Carved into the rugged cliffs of Bagalkot district in Karnataka, the Badami Cave
Temples stand as a remarkable testimony to the architectural, cultural, and spiritual legacy of early India. These cave temples, dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries CE, are some of the earliest and most significant examples of Indian rock-cut architecture.
Situated on the northern edge of the mighty sandstone hills that guard the historical town of Badami—formerly known as Vatapi—the caves overlook the placid waters of the Agastya Lake, forming a scenic and spiritually resonant backdrop. The caves are primarily Hindu in origin, but they also include Jain influences, illustrating the syncretic nature of religion and art during the Early Chalukyan period.
VATAPI AND THE CHALUKYAS
The story of the Badami Cave Temples is deeply intertwined with the Chalukya dynasty, particularly the Early Western Chalukyas who ruled most of Karnataka and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra between the 6th and 8th centuries CE. Under the leadership of Pulakeshin I and his illustrious successors, Badami became the political and cultural epicenter of the Chalukyan empire. Recognizing the need for a strong spiritual foundation, these rulers patronized the arts and religion with unmatched fervor. It was during the reign of Mangalesha, the younger brother of Pulakeshin I, that the first three cave temples were likely commissioned. These caves served not just as places of worship but also as embodiments of royal authority, philosophical thought, and artistic excellence. The fourth cave, carved later, is Jain in origin, suggesting that religious pluralism was not only tolerated but encouraged in the region.

GEOGRAPHIC AND ARCHITECTURAL
SETTING
Badami is nestled amidst red sandstone cliffs that rise on either side of a gorge, offering a naturally fortified and aesthetically compelling location for religious monuments. The Agastya Lake, which lies just beneath the cave temples, is an artificial reservoir named after the revered sage Agastya. It is said to possess spiritual
purification properties and remains a focal point of religious activity in the area. The cave temples are excavated on the southern cliff face, facing north. The approach involves a winding path flanked by boulders and native vegetation, gradually revealing the magnificence of the rock-cut sanctuaries. Each cave is cut directly into the rock, and the interiors are sculpted with intricate bas-reliefs, pillared verandahs, and sanctums—all created using hammer and chisel without any mortar or additional construction material. The consistency in technique yet diversity in themes and iconography speak volumes about the mastery of the artisans involved.

CAVE 1 – THE SHRINE OF LORD SHIVA
The first cave is reached by ascending a flight of steep steps, and it is the smallest and oldest of the four major caves. This cave, primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, is famous for its impressive relief sculpture of a 18-armed Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. Each arm is positioned in a unique mudra (gesture), symbolizing different aspects of dance and creation. The artistry here is both dynamic and precise. The Nataraja image captures the rhythmic energy and divine grace of Shiva’s cosmic performance, which is believed to control the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. Besides the central figure, the cave also features depictions of Ganesha, Mahishasura Mardini (Durga), and Ardhanarishvara—a composite form of Shiva and Parvati symbolizing the unity of masculine and feminine energies.
The ceiling of the cave is equally enchanting, with circular medallions of lotus flowers, celestial beings, and abstract geometric motifs. The stone pillars supporting the cave’s porch are adorned with decorative carvings and narrative friezes that highlight scenes from Shaiva mythology.

CAVE 2 – THE VISHNU INCARNATIONS BEGIN
Ascending further, one arrives at Cave 2, which is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This cave introduces visitors to the world of Vaishnavite iconography and metaphysics. The key sculptures here include Trivikrama (Vamana)—Vishnu’s dwarf incarnation who expands to cosmic proportions—and Varaha, the boar-headed avatar who rescues the Earth (Bhudevi) from the cosmic ocean. The depiction of Trivikrama is particularly grand and symbolically rich, illustrating the moment Vishnu asserts his cosmic form to subdue the demon king Bali. The sheer verticality of the sculpture communicates the limitless power and reach of the deity. The Varaha relief is equally expressive, capturing the blend of brute strength and divine benevolence. Cave 2 also showcases celestial maidens, guardians, and narrative panels that reflect the Chalukyan aesthetic, characterized by compact yet fluid figures, graceful drapery, and a strong sense of rhythm in composition.

CAVE 3 – THE PINNACLE OF CHALUKYAN ART
Arguably the most elaborate and aesthetically refined of the four, Cave 3 is also dedicated to Vishnu and was inaugurated in 578 CE, as per an inscription in Kannada on the wall. The cave has a grand verandah supported by exquisitely sculpted columns and a pillared hall leading to the inner sanctum. This cave is a masterclass in early Indian temple art. It features large and meticulously crafted images of Narasimha (the man-lion avatar), Harihara (a composite of Vishnu and Shiva), and Trivikrama. The sheer scale of these sculptures—some over 10 feet tall—underscores the spiritual and political ambitions of the Chalukyan rulers. The ornamentation of Cave 3 goes beyond narrative sculpture. The ceiling is adorned with concentric circles of floral patterns, mythical beasts, and divine beings. The architectural layout is more sophisticated, suggesting a maturation of the rock-cut temple technique. The space is larger, the depth of reliefs is greater, and the execution is more confident.

CAVE 4 – THE JAIN INFLUENCE
A few steps away from the third cave is Cave 4, smaller in size but significant in terms of religious diversity. This cave is believed to have been constructed in the late 7th century and is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras, most notably Mahavira and Parshvanatha. The presence of a Jain temple in this Hindu-majority complex underscores the inclusivity and religious harmony that existed during the Chalukyan rule. The sculptures in this cave are more austere, in line with Jain principles. Mahavira is depicted in a meditative pose, serene and detached, while Parshvanatha is shown with a snake canopy over his head. The minimalist design of the cave and its focus on inner contemplation rather than grand narrative aligns with Jain philosophy. Yet, even within this restraint, the precision and grace of the carvings remain impressive.

RELIGIOUS HARMONY
AND CULTURAL SYNCRETISM
One of the most compelling features of the Badami Cave Temples is the peaceful coexistence of multiple religious traditions—Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Jainism— within a single architectural complex. This is not merely a coincidence but a reflection of the pluralistic ethos of the Chalukyan dynasty. Rather than promoting one faith over another, the Chalukyan kings seem to have encouraged a symbiotic relationship between different sects and philosophical schools. The result is a holistic sacred landscape where divine forms are not in conflict but in conversation with each other. This syncretism extends to the architectural elements as well. Dravidian features such as stepped pyramidal structures merge with northern
Indian Nagara elements, creating a hybrid style that would influence temple architecture across South India for centuries to come.
THE SCULPTURAL STYLE AND ARTISTIC TECHNIQUES
The sandstone used in Badami is relatively soft, allowing artisans to create intricate reliefs with considerable depth and detail. However, this also meant that preservation would be a challenge, particularly with the natural erosion from wind and rain. The sculptors employed a subtractive technique—chipping away the rock to reveal forms— requiring both immense skill and precision. The figures are often carved in high relief, with well-defined musculature, expressive faces, and detailed ornamentation.

The narrative style is dynamic. Deities are not depicted as static idols but as animated beings engaged in cosmic drama. Drapery flows naturally, eyes glisten with emotion, and limbs twist in rhythmic poses. The proportions are idealized, drawing from the Shilpa Shastras, ancient Indian texts on art and iconography.
EPIGRAPHY AND LANGUAGE
Inscriptions found in and around the Badami caves are among the earliest examples of Kannada and Sanskrit epigraphy. These records provide invaluable insights into the sociopolitical structure, religious practices, and royal lineages of the time. The Kannada inscriptions are particularly significant in tracing the development of the regional language and script. They speak of donations, temple dedications, and royal victories, thereby connecting the spiritual purpose of the caves with the political aspirations of their patrons.

MODERN CONSERVATION AND TOURISM
Today, the Badami Cave Temples are protected as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Restoration efforts have been undertaken to manage erosion and prevent further damage to the stonework. Signage, lighting, and visitor amenities have been improved to accommodate the growing interest of tourists, scholars, and spiritual seekers. Badami is often visited as part of the “Golden Triangle” of Karnataka’s heritage circuit, which includes Aihole and Pattadakal—two other Chalukyan centers of art and architecture. Together, these sites represent a cradle of Deccan civilization, deserving of wider recognition on the global heritage map.
The Badami Cave Temples are not just relics of a bygone era—they are living monuments that speak to the soul of Indian civilization. They embody a confluence of religion, art, philosophy, and power, each chiseled into the red sandstone with devotion and intent. Their quiet presence amidst Karnataka’s rocky terrain continues to inspire awe, reflection, and a deeper appreciation for the country’s artistic and spiritual legacy. For travelers, historians, architects, and devotees alike, Badami offers a rare and profound journey into the heart of ancient India—where gods danced on stone walls, and empires whispered their legacy into the wind.

Story of transforming Lives

Driven by an unwavering passion for mental health, Dr. Rixon has dedicated his entire life to this vital cause. It all began with a humble counseling center in Kochi, but the roots of his commitment reach far deeper. In his youth, Rixon was actively involved in volunteering for organizations dedicated to rehabilitating mentally challenged individuals who had been abandoned and marginalized by society. In an extraordinary display of dedication, Rixon embarked on a profound journey, covering the length of Kerala from its northernmost reaches to the southern tip, entirely on foot. His purpose was crystal clear: to gain firsthand insight into the challenges faced by those abandoned and left without care. These experiences left an indelible mark on him, reinforcing his unyielding commitment to the mission of mental health. His vision was crystal clear— to provide comprehensive mental health services that encompassed not only counseling and psychotherapy but also a full spectrum of specialized care.

Understanding the intricate nature of mental health, he assembled a team of professionals, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, child psychologists, and yoga mindfulness experts. The cornerstone of our journey was built upon the belief that mental health care is a collaborative effort. Dr. Rixon also recognized the importance of time, genuine interest, and unwavering commitment in delivering high-quality care. Every client deserved undivided attention and a sincere commitment to their well-being.
With the initial team successfully running the clinic, the dream of establishing a center with premium facilities for psychological care was born. This mission was guided by three essential pillars: Premium Infrastructural Facilities: We aimed to provide a therapeutic environment where individuals could feel comfortable and secure. Customized Evidence-Based Approaches: We understood that one size does not fit all in mental health. Our mission was to integrate evidence-based approaches while tailoring them to meet the unique needs of each client.

Premium Care by Experts: Our commitment was to assemble a team of highly qualified and experienced mental health professionals who would provide top-tier care. Our goal was to create an environment free from the clinical atmosphere, where no one would feel like just another patient. We envisioned a welcoming space where people could openly engage with our experts without the fear of stigma or judgment. Furthermore, our services would be outcomeoriented; clients should leave our care with tangible benefits.

In 2017, we transformed this vision into reality by establishing the Mibo Health and Happiness Care in Kochi. The name “Mibo” reflects our commitment to the interconnectedness of mind and body. We obtained trademark registration for our name and have been successfully operating ever since. With five years of experience, Mibo Health and Happiness Care has emerged as the leading destination for mental health services in Kerala. Our team of psychologists, psychiatrists, and other experts has consistently delivered exceptional care.

In 2021, we were honored with the Best Mental Health Establishment in Kerala Award, a testament to our dedication. Building on this success, our team unveiled an ambitious plan in 2022—a comprehensive mental health care facility with residential care options in Bangalore and Mumbai. In line with our vision, we have also incorporated a new company for international services in England, United Kingdom, marking our international center for new developments. By 2023, we successfully realized this project in Bangalore and are actively working on making it a reality in Mumbai.
Our journey continues, … Fueled by our commitment to mental health and a profound sense of responsibility to those seeking our support. We remain dedicated to providing premium, personalized, and outcome-oriented mental health care for all.

SPORTS & YOUTH WELFARE OF KARNATAKA

KARNATAKA’S VISION: NURTURING TALENT AMONG THE SIDDI TRIBAL COMMUNITY

In the lush forests and rural hamlets of Karnataka, a unique initiative is taking root—one that seeks to transform the lives of the Siddi tribal community through sports and education. Descendants of Bantu peoples from Southeast Africa, brought to India centuries ago by Portuguese traders, the Siddis have long lived on the margins of society. Today, Karnataka is harnessing their inherent athletic potential and resilience, aiming to empower this historically marginalized group and pave the way for future champions.

A RICH HERITAGE MEETS
MODERN OPPORTUNITY
The Siddis, numbering around 50,000 across India with over a third residing in Karnataka, are concentrated in the Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, and Dharwad districts. Their journey traces back to the 16th century, when they arrived as slaves, soldiers, or merchants, eventually settling in isolated forest villages like Yellapur, Haliyal, and Mundgod. Despite their vibrant cultural traditions—expressed

through music, dance, and ancestor worship—the community has faced systemic neglect, poverty, and racial discrimination. Many Siddis remain landless laborers, with limited access to education or upward mobility. Yet, beneath these challenges lies untapped potential.
Karnataka’s Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), alongside non-profits like Bridges of Sports and initiatives like Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) “Made of Bold” program, is betting on the Siddis’ natural athleticism to rewrite their narrative. Coaches and observers often note their physical prowess—traits like speed, agility, and endurance that echo their East African ancestry.

A STRATEGIC PUSH THROUGH SPORTS
In March 2025, reports highlighted Karnataka’s renewed focus on the Siddi community, with DYES spearheading efforts to provide specialized coaching in boxing, athletics, and swimming. This builds on earlier programs, such as one in 2022 where 500 Siddi children underwent 18 fitness tests, resulting in 52 being selected for training. These efforts target first-generation school-goers, offering not just sports training but also education and nutrition support—a holistic approach to upliftment.

The state’s sports hostels in Bengaluru, Uttara Kannada, and Chamarajanagar, funded through the Tribal Sub Plan (allocating 7% of departmental budgets to tribal welfare), serve as hubs for this initiative. Athletes like Maryani, a boxer who joined in 2022, and Rohan Mohan Siddi, a rising star, exemplify the talent emerging from these programs. Coaches like Dhanasanjayan, a former international boxer, have praised the Siddis’ physical fitness, recounting how they effortlessly scale obstacles that others struggle with. Complementing government efforts, organizations like
Bridges of Sports have taken a hyper-local approach. Since 2016, they’ve trained over 300 Siddi children in northern Karnataka, providing scholarships, facilities, and mentorship. Founder Nitish Chiniwar emphasizes equal opportunity: “No matter their background, they should get the same chances as everyone else.” RCB’s recent launch of the “Made of Bold” program in Mundgod further amplifies this vision, targeting sprinting talent in the Siddi community and aiming for long-term socio-economic impact.

SUCCESS STORIES AND FUTURE HOPES
The results are already inspiring. Ravikiran Siddi, a sprinter from Mundgod, clocks 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash—just shy of the national record—dreaming of Olympic glory. Sushil Kambrekar, selected by the Bengal Warriors in pro-kabaddi, showcases the community’s versatility. Past successes, like Kamala Siddi’s medals at the South Asian Games in the 1980s, prove this potential is not new—it’s just been overlooked. Beyond individual triumphs, these programs foster community pride. Ravikiran notes, “People are aware of my community now. I’ve been featured in the news, and it’s bringing recognition.” This visibility challenges stereotypes and bridges the gap between the Siddis and mainstream society.
HURDLES IN FRONT
Despite the progress, hurdles remain. Funding gaps, bureaucratic delays, and the closure of earlier initiatives like the Special Area Games scheme have disrupted continuity. Many Siddi villages are remote, limiting access to facilities, while illiteracy and dropout rates hinder broader participation. Socially, the community still faces caste-like discrimination, often treated as outsiders despite centuries in India. Activists like Kiran Kamal Prasad advocate for extending Scheduled Tribe status across all Siddi-populated districts (currently limited to Uttara Kannada), ensuring uniform benefits. Meanwhile, coaches call for sustained investment—consistency, they argue, is key to producing world-class athletes.

A FOCUS ON RURAL SPORTS
Karnataka’s focus on the Siddis aligns with a national push to tap rural and tribal talent, seen in schemes like Khelo India. But it’s also a local story of redemption— turning a legacy of isolation into one of opportunity. For the Siddis, this is more than sports—it’s a lifeline. As Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s administration doubles down on tribal development, the community stands at a crossroads. With the right support, the forests of Karnataka could soon echo with the footsteps of champions, carrying the Siddi name to podiums worldwide while uplifting an entire people. The journey has begun, and the world is watching.

HISTORY OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA IN INDIA
When Siddi boxers initially arrived in Bengaluru, other sporty teenagers residing at SJNNYTC often called them “Africans”. “They were surprised when we spoke Kannada, but they quickly became our friends upon realising we were also from Karnataka,” said Rohan Mohan Siddi, 18, from Yellapur. Although the SJNNYTC campus provides schooling, senior trainees enrolled in Pre-University College (11th and 12th standard) attend classes at a nearby government college, where Rohan encountered curious questions about his racial background. This initial surprise and fascination regarding African-looking Indians are understandable yet reflect ignorance about India’s extensive African diaspora history. The term “Siddi”, used
to describe Africans in India, is believed to be derived from “Sayyid”, which means “master” or “lord”, highlighting the influence of Muslim culture in the migration of Africans to India. Historical accounts suggest that the name could have been derived from the title borne by Arab captains (sayyids) of vessels that brought Africans to India, either as slaves, soldiers, or merchants. Another theory links “Siddi” to sahibi, an Arabic term of respect used in North Africa. Some historians are of the opinion that it is inaccurate to describe all African migration to India as a consequence of the slave trade as, throughout history, free merchants also travelled to the subcontinent from Africa along established routes in the Indian Ocean.

Many of the people who arrived in India came from East Africa and they served as soldiers in various Muslim and Hindu kingdoms across the subcontinent. They achieved upward social mobility over the years, married local women, and gradually integrated more deeply into
Indian society with each generation. The Habshi Sultans of Bengal (1486–1493 CE) were of African origin, but the greatest influence of Siddis was felt in the Deccan, where high-ranking Africans served prominently in the courts of the Bahmani, Ahmednagar, Bijapur, and Golconda Sultanates.

With the establishment of the Portuguese Asian Empire in the 16th century, the region of present-day Mozambique became another significant source of slaves to India. Gwyn Campbell, a historian of the Indian Ocean, writes that “it is probable that the cumulative number of African slaves to Asian markets over the centuries well exceeded the 10 to 12 million landed in the Americas.” According to oral accounts, Siddis in the Uttara Kannada region (located just south of Goa, a Portuguese colony for over five centuries) migrated there seeking safety from persecution. They have since lived in villages adjacent to dense forests. Karnataka’s Siddis are religiously diverse, reflected among the boxing trainees who include Christians, Hindus, and Muslims, conversing in a dialect that Maryani described as a blend of Konkani, Hindi, and Marathi.

SPORTS SCHEMES: SUCCESSES & QUESTIONS
For centuries, the Siddi community remained isolated in remote hamlets in the jungles of Uttara Kannada, leading to significant marginalisation. However, their athletic talents have offered avenues of success. The current DYES scheme is not unprecedented; in 1988, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports launched a Special Area Games (SAG) scheme for Siddis, selecting 65 athletes in two batches for training in Bengaluru.
Although this initiative was inexplicably discontinued after a few years, several Siddi athletes achieved prominence, with some even competing internationally for India. Kamala Mingel Siddi, a beneficiary of the 1989 scheme, represented India in three South Asian Federation (SAF) Games (now the South Asian Games). Other Siddi sportspersons from that period secured government jobs through sports quotas. More recently, the Siddi community’s inclination towards sports has continued, resulting in accolades in wrestling, kabaddi, and boxing. For instance, Sushil Kambrekar, a Siddi from Haliyal, was selected last year by the pro-Kabaddi team Bengal Warriors.
As the Karnataka government advances this current initiative for Siddis, it would be prudent to revisit the reasons behind the failure of the 1988 scheme. One reason cited in the 1990s was that Siddis experienced cultural alienation upon relocation to Bengaluru. However, interactions with Siddi youth at SJNNYTC indicate that cultural alienation is no longer a significant issue.
