Karnataka, a state in southern India, boasts a rich cultural heritage and a history replete with individuals who have risen to prominence through their remarkable contributions across diverse fields. These iconic figures, both men and women, have etched their names in the chronicles of history, embodying values of courage, intellect, compassion, and innovation. They have not only shaped the destiny of the state but have also inspired generations with their unwavering commitment to their ideals. This essay explores the lives and achievements of some of Karnataka’s most popular and revered figures.

Visionary Leaders and Cultural Giants: Sir M.

Revered women of courage and wisdom: Karnataka’s history includes stories of brave women who fiercely defended their land and upheld justice. Kittur Rani Chennamma stands as a powerful symbol of resistance against British rule. Born in 1778, she led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824, nearly three decades before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Though ultimately captured, her defiance served as a catalyst for other women to join the freedom struggle. Onake Obavva, a legendary figure from the 18th century, exhibited remarkable courage in defending the Chitradurga Fort against the forces of Hyder Ali. She single-handedly fought the invading soldiers using a pestle (onake). Research Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences reports that Obavva’s bravery has been immortalized in folklore and remains a source of inspiration.

Brave hearts and freedom fighters: Kittur Rani Chennamma: This heroic queen of the princely state of Kittur led an armed rebellion against the British in response to the Doctrine of Lapse, becoming a symbol of resistance against colonial rule. Belawadi Mallamma: Another brave queen who fought valiantly against foreign invaders in the pre-Gandhian era.Rani Abbakka: The fearless queen of the Ullal kingdom in South Kanara district who fiercely resisted the Portuguese during the 16th century. Umabai Kundapur: A courageous freedom fighter from Kundapur, she actively participated in the Indian independence movement and was deeply influenced by the hardships endured by the common people under British rule.

Visvesvaraya: Often hailed as the “Father of Modern Mysore” or “Rajarshi,” a title bestowed upon him by Mahatma Gandhi, Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a visionary engineer, statesman, and recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. His contributions to engineering, including the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya, were instrumental in the development of Karnataka. His birthday, September 15th, is celebrated as Engineers’ Day in India.

Kuvempu (Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa): A prolific writer and poet, Kuvempu is considered one of the greatest literary figures in Kannada literature. He was the first Kannada writer to receive the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor. His works emphasized universal humanism, social reform, and love for the mother tongue. Gangubai Hangal: An iconic vocalist of the Kirana gharana, Gangubai Hangal captivated audiences with her deep and powerful voice, becoming a leading figure in Hindustani classical music. Girish Karnad: A multifaceted personality, Girish Karnad excelled as a playwright, screenwriter, actor, and director. His plays, written primarily in Kannada, are considered a landmark in modern Indian playwriting. He too was a recipient of the prestigious Jnanpith Award.

Pillars of Strength and Progress: Influential Men of Karnataka: Karnataka has been home to visionary men who have left a lasting legacy through their leadership, intellect, and social impact. Basavanna, a 12th-century philosopher and social reformer, championed a society

free from caste distinctions and religious prejudices through his Vachanas, inspiring a social revolution that continues to influence thought and action in Karnataka according to Karnataka PCS Free Notes. His teachings emphasized equality and compassion.

In the realm of science and technology, Dr. C. N. R. Rao, a distinguished materials chemist, has made groundbreaking contributions to understanding the properties of various materials, earning him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. His prolific research and academic pursuits have garnered global recognition. Dr. Rajkumar, a legendary Kannada actor, singer, and producer, holds an iconic status in Kannada cinema for his captivating performances and enduring contributions to the industry. His immense popularity and philanthropic endeavors cemented his position as a cultural icon. Rahul Dravid, a renowned cricketer, is revered for his sportsmanship, dedication, and leadership qualities. Known as “The Wall,” he epitomized perseverance and integrity throughout his illustrious career. Girish Karnad, a multitalented playwright, actor, and director, enriched Indian theatre and cinema with his insightful narratives and powerful performances. His thought-provoking works explored complex themes, earning him numerous accolades, including the Jnanpith Award.

Entrepreneurs and social activists: Karnataka has also fostered a spirit of entrepreneurship and social activism, producing individuals who have made a significant impact on society. N. R. Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, is widely recognized as a pioneer of the Indian IT industry. His vision and leadership transformed Infosys into a global IT powerhouse, creating numerous employment opportunities and shaping India’s economic landscape. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, a pioneering entrepreneur, founded Biocon, a leading biopharmaceutical company. Her entrepreneurial journey, from a garage startup to a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs. Saalumarada Thimmakka, a renowned environmentalist, is celebrated for her extraordinary efforts in planting and nurturing thousands of trees, earning her the title “Mother of Trees”. Her unwavering commitment to environmental conservation has inspired global recognition.

Legacy of excellence: These are just a few examples of the remarkable men and women who have brought honor and pride to Karnataka through their contributions in various fields. Their stories of courage, innovation, and unwavering spirit serve as an inspiration for generations to come. Their legacy continues to shape the identity of Karnataka and its people, reminding us of the immense potential within each individual to contribute meaningfully to society and create a lasting impact.

PN RAO’S LINENCRAFT A Breezy Blend of Tradition & Contemporary Style

As Bengaluru welcomes the monsoon with a gentle rhythm, PN Rao, one of the city’s most celebrated suiting destinations, has introduced a refreshing new edit from its exclusive in-house label Linencraft. Launched in the summer of 2024, Linencraft is dedicated to bespoke linen clothing, and with its latest collection, the brand blends modern utility with ceremonial grace, all while keeping comfort at its core.

Linen, Tailored for the Season

With an eye on seasonal relevance and customer demand, the new Linencraft collection is divided into two key segments — casual and ceremonial. Ketan Pishe, partner at PN Rao, shares, “The casual segment is inspired by current fashion trends and the practical needs of our climate. We’ve used oversized silhouettes, utility-style pockets, drawstring trousers, and lightweight bomber jackets. These pieces aren’t just stylish; they’re perfect for monsoon and transitional weather in the cities we operate in.” This segment, Pishe explains, caters to the evolving preferences of modern young men who are looking beyond the classic shirt-and-trouser ensemble. “They want to look fresh, feel young, and dress effortlessly. Our designs reflect that sensibility.”

Ceremonial Elegance in Linen

While the casual collection leans toward a relaxed, contemporary aesthetic, the ceremonial side reimagines traditional attire in linen. “We have pieces like linen kurtas, embroidered sherwanis, and printed bundis — all designed to bring lightness and elegance to festive dressing,” says Pishe. Perfect for beach weddings or breezy summer evenings, these garments combine the breathable comfort of linen with rich, ceremonial design language. The ceremonial collection draws from themes such as “a summer breeze”, translating the mood of easy, festive gatherings into stylish silhouettes that feel as good as they look.

Design, Colour, and Fit: A Thoughtful Fusion

Design-wise, the focus has been on relaxed fits, eschewing tight cuts in favour of looser, more laid-back silhouettes. Shirts come with oversized pockets and stylised tailoring, while the sherwanis and tuxedos retain classic elegance infused with contemporary elements.

“We’ve used mostly plain fabrics in varied colours. Contrasting combinations — like blue with cream, or peach with brown — dominate this collection. Bright colours have taken a back seat this season, so we’ve opted for subtle hues that complement the natural feel of linen,” explains Pishe.

An exciting twist in the collection is the use of unique geometric prints, a departure from the ubiquitous florals seen in recent years. These prints not only enhance the visual appeal of the garments but also reflect the brand’s evolving design language.

A Celebration of Fabric

At the heart of this entire collection is linen — chosen exclusively for its breathability, lightweight nature, and comfort. With its soft texture and climatefriendly attributes, linen continues to be a favourite among designers and customers alike, especially during India’s extended summer months. “Linen suits our ethos. It’s breathable, elegant, and versatile — ideal for both casual and festive occasions,” adds Pishe.

What’s Next? Autumn-Winter on the Horizon

While this collection captures the essence of summer dressing, PN Rao is already looking ahead. Work is underway on their Autumn-Winter 2025 collection, timed to coincide with the upcoming wedding season.

“There’s a lot to look forward to, including our new bundi-kurta sets, which will offer a fresh twist on traditional ceremonial wear. We plan to launch the collection around the Ganesha Puja festival,” Pishe reveals, hinting at an exciting edit to come.

With Linencraft, PN Rao continues its legacy of bespoke craftsmanship while staying in tune with evolving fashion needs.

This new collection is not just a celebration of linen — it’s a statement of comfort, versatility, and timeless style adapted for the modern Indian wardrobe.

Scheduled from June 20 to 22, 2025, this retreat offers more than just temporary relief—it’s an opportunity to reset your relationship with your body.

WHY GUT HEALTH MATTERS:

The gut is often called the “second brain” of the body for good reason. It’s responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption and influences mental clarity, mood, and immune function. Disruptions in gut health can lead to issues such as hyperacidity, hypoacidity, acid reflux, indigestion, constipation, and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). The “Heal Your Gut” program at Kshemavana has been thoughtfully curated by naturopathy and holistic medicine experts to address these concerns at the root level.

A THREE-STEP APPROACH

The retreat takes a focused and effective three-step approach to healing:

• Remove: Participants begin by eliminating inflammatory foods and toxins that irritate the gut. This phase allows the digestive system to rest and begin its healing process naturally.

• Reset: With the guidance of nutritionists and wellness experts, attendees are introduced to gut-friendly foods and healthy lifestyle habits that support microbiome balance.

• Restore: The final phase focuses on strengthening the gut lining and enhancing digestion, energy levels, and nutrient absorption through holistic therapies and mindfulness practices.

HOLISTIC HEALING AMID NATURE

What sets Kshemavana apart is its natural setting and its emphasis on harmony between body, mind, and spirit. The centre integrates naturopathy, yoga, mindful eating, and wellness treatments into daily routines. During the retreat, guests can expect a blend of:

• Personalised naturopathic consultations

• Specially crafted detox meals

MAP MUSEUM OF ART & PHOTOGRAPHY SIGNALS A New Era For Museums

In Bangalore

MAP has been developed to act as a beacon for South Asian arts and culture worldwide and is the brainchild of philanthropist and collector Abhishek Poddar, who also gifted the founding collection. The Museum is led by its Director, Kamini Sawhney. MAP’s collection of more than 60,000 works, ranges widely with a particular emphasis on the modern and contemporary, presenting paintings, sculptures and graphics, alongside textiles, indigenous art, and memorabilia of India’s world-famous Bollywood industry. It deliberately blurs the boundaries between what is regarded as high art and the everyday creativity of the region’s communities. The photography collection is one of the most varied in India with a particular focus on the period from the mid-nineteenth century, right up to the present day.

Speaking about MAP’s purpose, Abhishek Poddar, Founder and Trustee of MAP, said: “As someone who has had the privilege of being surrounded by art all my life, and encountered the ideas of artists from an early age, I came to the realisation that I must share this transformative experience with others. My hope for MAP is that it can reach people, especially the next generation, in whose hands our future is held. More than half of our population are under 25 years old; no country has more young people. I believe they are the ones, the generation of change, who will eventually be the real curators of MAP.”

Kamini Sawhney, Director of MAP, said: “South Asian cultures represent the cultures of nearly a quarter of the world’s population and yet our stories have not been told. At MAP, we are able to draw on the rich resources of our collection as well as commissioning new work from artists, to tell those stories and to speak especially to a young generation whose visual experiences are so greatly influenced by the digital world. We don’t just want to share the undeniable beauty of art, through our programme we want to consider the urgent issues in society that we all face, using art’s power to spark new debates and give us new insights into our own lives.”

MAP’s landmark 44,000 square foot building, located in the heart of Bangalore’s museum quarter is designed by Bangalore based architects, Mathew & Ghosh, and includes five galleries, a café and a rooftop restaurant with sweeping views across the city, a 130 seat auditorium, a library housing extensive research material on Indian art and culture, freely available to students and researchers, and a conservation centre for the protection, maintenance and upkeep of artwork.

The Museum opens with four exhibitions, and a series of new commissions:

VISIBLE/INVISIBLE, examining the role of women in art through the MAP Collection, the exhibition is curated by Kamini Sawhney and the curatorial team, and features more than 130 works, including new commissions and works by leading Indian artists such as Jamini Roy, Bhupen Khakhar, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Ravinder Reddy, Arpita Singh, M.F. Husain. This exhibition is also accompanied by a 240-page fully illustrated catalogue.

Time & Time Again, the first major survey of photographs by acclaimed Indian artist Jyoti Bhatt featuring more than 160 photographs as well as contact sheets and archival materials which chart Bhatt’s photographic journey during the second half of the 20th century. Curated by Nathaniel Gaskell, Director of MAP Academy, with an accompanying illustrated monograph. MAP also presents a solo show of the artist LN Tallur, who was born in the State of Karnataka, where MAP is located, and who now lives and works between India and South Korea.

A group of sculptures that depict rishis and yoginis, by celebrated British sculptor, Stephen Cox, made in Indian basalt, are installed in MAP’s Subhedar Family Sculpture Courtyard. Sculptural commissions by renowned artist and designer Arik Levy, together with works by two of India’s leading contemporary artists, Ayesha Singh and Tarik Currimbhoy, are on display in key locations across the museum. Supported by Bangalore’s advanced technologies, the new museum is built on the foundations of a pioneering digital format, which was launched in 2020.This includes virtual exhibitions, artists talks, virtual reality experiences, and a series of keynote conversations with international museum directors highlighting the collections.

The museum experience for MAP’s visitors is augmented with digital interventions, including the Sasken Multimedia Gallery, enabling the entirety of MAP’s collection to remain accessible, even when specific works are not on display. Linked to the museum, MAP Academy launched in 2022, under the direction of Nathaniel Gaskell, is an online resource making available South Asian art histories. The Academy offers online courses and access to its rapidly developing encyclopaedia of art history from the region.

SPECIAL INITIATIVES KARNATAKA

To Come Up In Bengaluru

The UK’s University of Liverpool (UoL) has announced plans to open its first international branch campus in India, selecting Bengaluru as its base. The campus, slated to begin its first session in August 2026 and offer degrees mirroring those taught in Liverpool, will initially roll out programs in computer science, business management, finance, biomedical sciences, and game design, among others. It will also introduce a program in Game Design, a unique offering for a UK university campus in India.

The announcement was made in the presence of Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, at an official event in Delhi. “This is a globally connected university with a history of impactful international collaboration. Our success with our 20-year-old joint venture in Suzhou, China, which now has 27,000 students, demonstrates our ability to scale while maintaining quality,” UoL’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Jones, told ETEducation. The development comes a few weeks after the University of York announced that it will set up its first overseas campus in Mumbai.

Why Bengaluru?

According to Jones, Bengaluru was a natural choice due to its vibrant tech ecosystem, a youthful population, and an existing network of research and academic partnerships. “We already have longstanding collaborations in the city, including a 20-year research tie-up with NIMHANS that has influenced WHO vaccine guidelines,” he said. Bengaluru is also home to Hindustan Unilever’s R&D labs, a strategic link to Unilever’s global research operations based in Liverpool. “We aim to deepen this UK-India corporate-academic nexus,” Jones added.

While the curriculum will be developed in Liverpool, the university is entering memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with companies like Wipro and AstraZeneca to bolster internship opportunities, guest lectures, and industry exposure.

Aiming for 10,000 Students in 10 years

The university is targeting an initial intake of a few hundred students, with ambitions to scale to 5,000 within five years and 10,000 within a decade. Faculty hiring will predominantly be local, though some Liverpool-based staff will rotate through the Indian campus. A Provost will be appointed to lead the Bengaluru operations and serve as the bridge between the two geographies.

Amid growing scrutiny over the return on investment for international education, Jones emphasized Liverpool’s strong employability record. “We’ll replicate our career-focused model here. The value proposition will be clear to both students and parents,” he said. The institution also plans to tailor parts of its academic delivery to local needs, ensuring graduates are not only globally equipped but also India-ready. Jones was clear that Liverpool’s venture is about mutual growth: “This is not a one-way street. We’ll share UK best practices and equally learn from India’s dynamic academic and business ecosystem,” he said.

Founded in 1881 as the original ‘red brick’, the University of Liverpool is one of the UK’s leading research-intensive higher education institutions with an annual turnover of £708.3 million. It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of the UK’s leading research universities. Last month, University of Western Australia (UWA) announced plans to open its first offshore campus in Mumbai.

The Perth-based institution, a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8), is among the first international universities to formally enter India’s nascent transnational education market following regulatory reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The University of Liverpool also signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with several organisations — including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), AstraZeneca Pharma India, Wipro, YouWeCan and Dream11 — to explore future collaborative opportunities.

BMTC LAUNCHES ‘DIVYA DARSHANA’ TEMPLE TOUR PACKAGE

IN BENGALURU

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has received an overwhelming response to its newly launched ‘Divya Darshana’ package tour, which covers some of the most revered temples across the city. Following the success of its earlier tour packages-‘Bengaluru Darshini’, a one-day heritage and temple tour within the city, and ‘Bengaluru-Isha Foundation’, a tour of attractions in and around Chikkaballapur -- BMTC officials confirmed that more than 50,000 passengers have availed of the services over the past year.

Initially launched as a weekend and public holiday service, the ‘Divya Darshana’ tour, flagged off on May 31, was originally planned to run only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. However, due to the surge in demand and steady bookings, BMTC expanded the service to operate daily from June 2 onwards. “This package has been a hit, with buses running full every day since the launch,” a BMTC official said. “The tour is operated using air-conditioned buses, providing both comfort and spiritual experience to passengers.”

The package is priced at Rs 450 for adults and Rs 350 for children, and includes visits to eight prominent temples in and around Bengaluru. The AC bus departs from Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic) at 8:30 AM, with the first stop at Sri Gali Anjaneya Swami Temple, followed by Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple, Shrungagiri Sri Shanmukha Swami Temple, Sri Devi Karumaari Ammanavara Temple, and Omkar Hills Temple. It then proceeds to the ISKCON Vaikunta Temple at Vasanthapura and the Art of Living Ashram on Kanakapura Road. On the return journey, passengers are taken to the Banashankari Temple before being dropped back at Majestic by 6 pm. BMTC is currently assessing the total revenue generated from the package but has already labeled it a clear success. The initiative aligns with BMTC’s goal of promoting spiritual tourism and providing affordable, wellorganized travel options for the public.

By combining convenience, affordability, and spiritual significance, ‘Divya Darshana’ is poised to become a popular weekend activity for Bengalureans and visitors alike.

MEN & WOMEN OF HONOUR KARNATAKA

Heart Lamp glows Kannada short story collection wins

International Booker Prize for BANU

MUSHTAQ

& her translator

Banu Mushtaq’s life could have come undone plenty of times. The feisty Kannada writer refused to bow down to anyone, even though her conservative in-laws, a knife-wielding attacker and her orthodox community tried aplenty. Now, her sharp language, subtle wit and unbreakable spirit have won her this year’s International Booker prize along with the translator Deepa Bhasthi. Heart Lamp (published by Penguin Random House India), a collection of 12 short stories on Muslim and Dalit women that Mushtaq wrote from 1990 to 2023, hit bookstores last month.

The author’s oeuvre in Kannada spans six short story collections, an essay collection, a poetry book and a novel whose translations can be found in most Indian languages. Having won the Karnataka Sahitya Akademy and Daana Chintamani Attimabbe awards, the 76-year-old’s International Booker nomination was completely out of the blue. “My family often told my father that I would get our nose cut. Now I hope, even though he is no more, I brought glory instead,” says the firebrand writer, whose resistance to patriarchy, caste, class and religion began with Kannada, a language her father ensured she learned, fighting his extended family whose dogmatic view necessitated that good Muslim girls only learn the Quran in Urdu. Though Mushtaq speaks Hindi, Dakhni Urdu and English, it was Kannada that she chose to write in as early as the age of eight. “I started writing the moment I learned the alphabet.”

The rebellious writer has blazed a path in a rural Muslim community that most do not understand. She attended university when most of her peers were tying the knot in their teens, married for love at 26, became a reporter for the award-winning vernacular paper Lankesh Patrike, then an activist in several protest literary circles including Bandaya Sahitya and eventually an advocate; not to miss her two terms in the municipal council. The daunting prospect of owning her writerly voice only came to her through a crisis. Upon graduating, Mushtaq was ready to embark on her journey to teach, explore and write. But it was marriage that came tumbling down on her dreams like a ton of bricks. “I had always wanted to write but had nothing to write because suddenly, after a love marriage, I was told to wear a burqa and dedicate myself to domestic work. I became a mother suffering from postpartum depression at 29.” Finding marriage, motherhood and domesticity against the very fibre of her being, Mushtaq chose a radical solution. “One day, I doused myself with white petrol kept in a can at home to clean watches since my in-laws had a watch-cumspectacle shop,” she recalls. “With a matchbox in my hand and ready to strike, it was my husband, who I had married for love, who clung to me and kept our threemonth-old daughter at my feet, telling me to stop.”

In ‘Heart Lamp’, the eponymous short story, Banu Mushtaq concludes the incident much more poetically for Mehrun, who, drenched in kerosene, is interrupted by her adolescent daughter and the baby placed on the floor. “She picked up the baby and pulled Salma, her young daughter, to her chest, feeling as if she was being comforted, touched and understood by a friend. All she could say was ‘Forgive me, my darling.’”

From that moment on, Mushtaq committed to a fight, mirrored by many of the characters who appear in her books. In her stories, readers frequently meet women who are damned to destitution because of their husbands replacing them with a new wife.

Many find their existence tied to bringing up a litter of six or seven kids, unable to sate their husband’s desire for a male heir. Men too aren’t spared by the chokehold of patriarchy, smothered by power tussles between their wives and mothers. “Women are often harder on women than men are. They step into the shoes of men and adopt their own strategies to oppress women… like how senior convicts become supervisors of other convicts,” says the writer who is inspired by Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky and Kannada activist-writer Devanur Mahadeva. Perhaps this is why Mushtaq has spent her whole life fighting the tyrants who wish to subdue her. “The Muslim community around me want to ostracise me.

They think I am winning accolades by getting thoo-thoo done on them,” says the author, who was once attacked in her office by a man with a knife until her husband disarmed him. “After months of fighting to keep him in jail, it was my daughter who, on the grounds of compassion, asked me to not produce evidence of his crime. This earned me the ire of the female judge presiding over the case.”

This is just one of the incidents that explains why Mushtaq’s irony and dry humour are the most beloved traits of her writing. “Her critique of society and religious fanaticism is very subtle, a quality I admire most about her work,” says Deepa Bhasthi, who began translating her words in 2022. Though the International Booker win is not the first time Mushtaq’s work is up for celebration—Kari Nagaragalu, her story about a Muslim woman deserted by her husband, was adapted into a film in 2003 and earned the lead a National Film Award for Best Actress—recognition by a wider audience for this major literary voice is long overdue.

Our Founder

Kristu Jayanti College, founded in 1999, is run by "BODHI NIKETAN TRUST", formed by the members of St. Joseph's Province of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious congregation in India. This congregation is the embodiment of the dream and vision of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara who was a nineteenth century educationist and social reformer in India. Kuriakose Chavara was born in 1805, in Kainakary, Kerala. In 1829 he was ordained as priest after his early schooling in the native village and priestly study. Kristu Jayanti College Founderies at Pallipuram seminary in Alapuzha.

Vision

'Light and Prosperity': To provide intellectual and moral leadership by igniting the minds of youth to realize their potential and make positive contributions leading to prosperity of the society and the nation at large.

Kuriakose Elias Chavara though he hailed from an upper caste Syrian Christian family, he played a major role in educating the people of the lower ranks of society. In 1846, Kuriakose Elias established St. Joseph's Press at Mannanam- a remote hamlet near the town of Kottayam in Central Kerala. This was the third printing press in Kerala and the first press founded by a Keralite without the help of foreigners. From this printing press came the first Malayalam newspaper Nasrani Deepika which later became a daily in 1887 and is circulated even today as Deepika. He also started a school at Mannanam in 1846.

Mission

To provide educational opportunities to all aspiring youth to excel in life by nurturing academic excellence, fostering values, creating civic responsibility, inculcating environmental concern and building global competencies in a dynamic environment.

He was responsible for introducing noon day meals in schools, a practice later adopted by the rulers of Travancore and then by the Indian government. In 1864, while he was serving as the Vicar General of Syrian Catholics, he ordered to start a school along with every church which was successful in making free education available for everyone. Thus schools in Kerala came to be known as 'pallikudam'. In co-operation with Palackal Thoma Malpan and Thoma Porukara, Kuriakose Elias founded an Indian religious congregation for men, now known as the 'Carmelites of Mary Immaculate' (CMI). He believed that intellectual development and the education of women was the first step towards overall social welfare. Towards this end he founded, the 'Congregation of the Mother of Carmel' (CMC), the first religious congregation for women.

Goals

• To provide a nurturing and trusting environment to learn and grow

• To ensure that the youth get adequate opportunities to identify and develop their skills

• To prepare the individual for employment and advancement in their chosen career

• To mould individuals into integrated personalities who are intellectually competent, spiritually mature, physically strong and socially sensitive

• To develop a lifelong desire in individuals to learn, create a positive change in the society, contribute to environmental sustainability and economic development of the nation

Kuriakose Elias attained eternal peace on 3 January 1871, aged 66, at Koonammavu- a northern suburb of Cochin City. Kuriakose Elias was beatified at Kottayam on 8 February 1986, and later on November 23, 2014 he was canonized at St. Peter's Square by Pope Francis The service of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara has been acknowledged and lauded with gratitude by the Government of India and to honour him, the Government released a postal stamp with his portrait in 1986. The CMI congregation with a membership of 2300, serves humanity in educational, social, healthcare and other activities, aiming the prosperity and well-being of the society. Though Kristu Jayanti College is a minority institution, it strives to impart quality education without distinction of religion, caste or creed.

A Wedding Venue Rooted in Heritage

Prangana isn’t just a venue—it’s a story. A story that began as a beloved family home envisioned by Mr. D. Devaraj, who believed in creating spaces where people could come together in joy and warmth. That spirit lives on today, carefully preserved and evolved by Niveditha D. and Bopanna Medaiah, who reimagined Prangana as a soulful blend of heritage and hospitality. Bringing in expertise in design, event curation, and experience-led services, Manish Rao and Sowmya Raghavan played a vital role in transforming Prangana into what it is today—a modern-day villa venue that remains deeply rooted in Indian aesthetics. At Prangana, every nook tells a story, and every ceremony becomes a personal milestone in its journey.

Wedding Celebrations at Prangana: Tailored and Timeless

Prangana is thoughtfully designed to cater to a variety of wedding events and traditions. Whether you envision a small traditional affair or a vibrant multi-day celebration, the venue’s design and services adapt effortlessly to your needs. From Baarat processions and Haldi ceremonies to Mehendi nights, Sangeet performances, and grand weddings, every event finds its perfect place here. The villa’s sprawling lawns and warm, elegant interiors allow guests to enjoy intimate, culturally rich moments, while modern amenities ensure comfort and convenience throughout. At Prangana, weddings feel less like staged events and more like personal milestones—authentic, intimate, and unforgettable.

The Charm of Spaces: Venues Within a Venue

One of Prangana’s defining features is its selection of distinctive event spaces—each with its own ambiance, capacity, and charm. Here’s a closer look at the key spaces that make weddings at Prangana a truly memorable affair:

Devabhagya: Where it All Begins

Step into Devabhagya, a restored family home that serves as a bridal and groom retreat before the big day. With three cozy guest bedrooms, open courtyards, sky bathrooms, a private balcony, and an art-filled living room, it offers a serene and luxurious experience. The soft blend of tradition and comfort provides a perfect sanctuary for the bridal party or immediate family, making prewedding preparations feel like a dream.

Kalyani: The Sacred Center

With a mantap facing east, overlooking a lotus pond and bordered by a grand amphitheater, Kalyani is where sacred vows are exchanged under open skies. The space comfortably accommodates 180 chairs plus 40 guests on amphitheater steps, making it ideal for the main wedding ceremony. The morning sun, tranquil waters, and temple-like serenity create a divine setting for tying the knot.

Deepasana: Earthy Elegance

For intimate ceremonies like Haldi, Mehendi, or cocktail parties, Deepasana offers a beautiful 1000 sq. ft. area with a traditional thatched roof and lush green surroundings. An elevated stone platform and soft ambient lighting make it picture-perfect for rituals steeped in tradition and joy. It holds up to 150 guests, ideal for smaller, meaningful gatherings.

Swaraa: Where Traditions Bloom

Swaraa is Prangana’s cozy corner, tailor-made for welcoming ceremonies such as Kashi Yaatra or the bride’s homecoming. With capacity for 50 guests, it’s best suited for rituals and quiet family moments. Warm lighting, traditional seating, and floral arrangements enhance its homely ambiance.

HOTELS, RESTAURANTS & HOSPITALITY OF KARNATAKA

Jollygunj Bengaluru’s Rooftop Revival of Colonial Nostalgia and Contemporary Celebration

Jollygunj, the latest addition to Bengaluru’s thriving social landscape, is a rooftop destination that brings together the elegance of the past with the exuberance of the present. Located in the lively neighborhood of JP Nagar, this new venture by Byg Ventures—creators of crowd favorites like Bob’s Bar and Byg Brewski Brewing Company—sets the tone for what modern hospitality in India can truly be. With its immersive design, inventive menu, and pulsating energy, Jollygunj offers an experience that is both refined and delightfully uninhibited. The concept behind Jollygunj is born from a desire to celebrate contrasts. It is where colonial-era charm meets contemporary culture, and where heritage seamlessly blends with modern lifestyle. The venue has been designed not just as a place to dine or drink, but as a living, breathing canvas of celebration. The moment guests step into Jollygunj, they are enveloped in an atmosphere that is as nostalgic as it is cutting-edge. The rooftop layout immediately sets it apart—open-air terraces, vintage-inspired nooks, and vibrant social spaces flow into one another to create a setting that feels simultaneously grand and intimate.

What makes Jollygunj truly special is its ability to tell a story through its design. Every element of the décor has been carefully curated to channel the essence of colonial India without slipping into kitsch. Wooden panels, brass fixtures, tiled flooring, and antique ceiling fans evoke the memory of a bygone era, while graffiti art, quirky signages, and neon accents reflect the modern spirit of urban India. The result is a space that is timeless in feel but entirely rooted in the present. The detailing goes beyond mere aesthetics—it invites patrons to pause, to look around, and to engage with the space as more than just a backdrop to their social life. At the heart of Jollygunj is its bar—a masterpiece of mixology and imagination. Here, the beverage menu isn’t just a list; it’s a bold expression of creativity and flair. With an emphasis on the “art of the shot,” the bar offers over 16 in-house shooter creations that push the boundaries of traditional drinking experiences. Among the standouts is the Angrezi—a whiskybased concoction infused with apple pie flavors, offering a blend that’s both warm and spirited. Another highlight is the Zabardast, a bold mix of tequila, pineapple, and bird’s eye chili that delivers a punchy and playful hit with every sip. These shots are not only carefully crafted but are also served with a flair that adds to their theatrical appeal. They’re perfect for breaking the ice, for toasting with friends, or simply for indulging in a bit of mischief.

But it’s not just about the shots. Jollygunj’s full cocktail menu is a journey through innovation, nostalgia, and indulgence. The bar’s mixologists are not afraid to play with ingredients—local infusions, spiced syrups, aromatic herbs, and bitters come together to create drinks that surprise and delight. Whether you’re a lover of smoky whiskies, delicate gins, aged rums, or fruity fusions, there’s something on the menu that will speak to your taste. And if you’re in the mood for something off-menu, the bartenders are more than willing to craft a bespoke drink based on your preferences, making every visit feel personalized and intimate. Complementing the beverage program is a culinary experience that is both elevated and accessible. The food at Jollygunj is a reflection of India’s rich colonial culinary heritage, reimagined for the contemporary palate. Drawing inspiration from Britishera clubs, regional street food, and timeless classics, the kitchen delivers dishes that are familiar in spirit but unexpected in execution. One of the early favorites is the Til Mil Tikki—a sesame-coated potato patty that is crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside, served with spicy chutneys and cooling yogurt. It’s the kind of

dish that evokes comfort and delight in equal measure. Then there’s the Scotch Egg, which takes the British classic and gives it a subcontinental twist with spiced sausage meat and a tangy tomato relish.

For meat lovers, the Kaala Mutton is a revelation. Slowcooked in a medley of spices and dark-roasted masalas, this dish packs intensity and depth. It is best paired with flaky parathas or soft kulchas. The Fish Kobiraji, inspired by Kolkata’s culinary traditions, is light, crispy, and subtly spiced—perfectly balancing flavor and texture. Chicken Kiev, a European staple, gets an Indian update with the use of local cheese and herbs, offering a butter-filled bite that melts in your mouth. And then there’s the Chicken Rizala—a creamy, almond-rich curry with Mughal roots, tinged with green chilies and fragrant spices. Every dish is crafted to invite conversation, evoke memories, and keep diners coming back. More than just food and drinks, Jollygunj offers an atmosphere that captures the spirit of a vibrant, evolving Bengaluru. It’s a space where the old and the new coexist, where tradition dances with innovation, and where every corner hums with energy.

Whether you’re a corporate professional looking for a post-work refuge, a creative seeking inspiration, or a group of friends out for a good time, Jollygunj adapts to your vibe. It’s this versatility that makes the venue special—its ability to be a cozy hideaway one moment and a lively party space the next. Live music performances, DJ sets, brunch specials, and themed nights are all part of the regular calendar at Jollygunj. The venue regularly hosts curated events featuring emerging musicians, indie acts, and alternative performers, bringing in a steady stream of culture-loving patrons. The acoustic evenings are especially popular, with the rooftop setting providing a magical backdrop for unplugged sets. Weekend DJ nights, on the other hand, transform the space into a buzzing dance floor where old-school hits, techno, and desi pop merge into one rhythmic beat. For those who prefer a quieter experience, private alcoves and cozy seating areas provide a more intimate setting, ideal for date nights or family dinners. The name “Jollygunj” itself captures the essence of what the place stands for.

“Gunj,” reminiscent of old marketplaces and buzzing neighborhoods, evokes a sense of community and energy, while “Jolly” adds a playful, carefree edge. It is a name that invites curiosity, and once you step in, it’s clear that the venue lives up to it. The idea is simple—to make people feel alive, to help them reconnect with joy, and to create a space where laughter, stories, and clinking glasses form the soundtrack to unforgettable evenings.

Ajay Gowda, Partner at Byg Ventures, describes Jollygunj as more than just a new bar—it’s a philosophy. “To be jolly is to live life in its best, most unapologetic form. That infectious vibe, that vibrant, larger-thanlife spirit—that’s exactly what we’ve poured into creating Jollygunj,” he says. “Here, strangers bond over shots, acquaintances become friends, and every corner hums with celebration. It’s not just a space; it’s a feeling, a celebration, and a slice of pure joy.” His words echo through the ethos of the venue, visible in every thoughtfully crafted cocktail, every plate that hits the table, and every playlist that fills the air. What further elevates the experience is the attention to detail in service. The staff at Jollygunj are trained not only to serve but to engage. There is a palpable warmth in the way guests are welcomed, in the ease with which recommendations are offered, and in the effort made to tailor the experience to each individual. It’s hospitality in its truest sense— personal, intuitive, and joyful.

Jollygunj also stands as a testament to how Bengaluru’s hospitality industry is evolving. With increasing demand for places that go beyond being just bars or restaurants, venues like Jollygunj are leading the way by offering immersive, narrative-driven experiences. The emphasis here is on building a community, fostering connections, and encouraging exploration—whether it’s of a new dish, a new drink, or a new friendship. It’s a place that belongs to everyone but still manages to feel like your own secret spot.

Byg Ventures, the powerhouse behind Jollygunj, continues to push boundaries with its unique approach to hospitality. With earlier successes like Byg Brewski Brewing Company, known for its large-scale brewery experiences, and Bob’s Bar, a cult favorite for its nostalgic charm and South Indian soul food, the company has already proven its knack for innovation. Jollygunj is a natural next step in that journey—a venue that is daring, different, and deeply rooted in storytelling. For those seeking more than just good food or drinks, Jollygunj offers a promise: of discovery, of delight, and of memories made in the most unexpected ways. It is a space that invites you to linger, to laugh, to let go, and to celebrate life in all its colors and contrasts. In a city that is constantly moving, changing, and growing, Jollygunj is a reminder to pause and savor the moment. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, each time at Jollygunj feels like a fresh chapter in a never-ending story of joy.

So, the next time you find yourself craving a break from the ordinary, take the elevator to the top, step into Jollygunj, and let the evening unfold. Order the Angrezi, try the Kaala Mutton, tap your feet to the music, strike up a conversation with a stranger, and toast to the good life. Because at Jollygunj, every night is a festival, every visit a celebration, and every guest—well, they’re part of the family now.

ROYAL HERITAGE & ARCHITECTURE OF KARNATAKA

GOL GUMBAZ & THE WHISPERING GALLERY

An Architectural Marvel of Bijapur

The skyline of Bijapur, a historic town in northern Karnataka, is crowned by one of India’s most remarkable architectural wonders — Gol Gumbaz, the country’s largest ancient dome and an enduring symbol of the Deccan Sultanate. Its name is derived from the term Gola Gummata, meaning “circular dome,” and it fittingly describes the grand scale and structure of this imposing mausoleum. Serving as the final resting place of Mohammed Adil Shah, the seventh ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty, Gol Gumbaz is not only a remarkable feat of engineering but also a deeply symbolic structure that reflects the might and vision of its patron. Situated about 2 kilometres from the heart of Bijapur, the grey basalt structure is often hailed as the “Taj Mahal of South India” for its magnificence and historical value.

A Tomb of Ambition: Historical Background

Mohammed Adil shah started construction of his own tomb to bury his mortal remains right after his ascent to the throne in 1626. Mohammed Adil shah intended to build for himself a mausoleum comparable and possibly grander in scale than the Ibrahim Rauza, the tomb of his father, Ibrahim Adil Shah II. The composition and ornamentation of the Ibrahim Rauza is exceptionally intricate and beautiful. Going for size, the Gol Gumbaz was planned as a mammoth single chamber structure and remains one of the biggest in the world till date. The construction of the tomb continued throughout Mohammed Adil Shah’s regime but could not be executed to full extent due to the sudden demise of the Sultan in 1656. Buried along with the Sultan are his two wives, Taj Jahan Begum and Aroos Bibi, his mistress Rambha, his daughter and his grandson.

Architectural Grandeur and Structural Innovation

The Gol Gumbaz, also known as Gol Gumbadh, was designed by an architect named Yaqut of Dabul. Dabul, also known as Dabhol, is a small seaport town in Ratnagiri District, Maharashtra, India. The mausoleum has been built in dark grey Basalt stone and the facade is decorated with plaster. It is cohabited in a complex with other structures like a dharamshala (a simple inn), a mosque and other buildings along with a beautiful, well-maintained garden. The architectural style of the building is Deccan Indo-Islamic which is a perfect confluence of Indo-Islamic and Dravidian architecture. Deccan rulers produced an independent style of their own, largely ignoring the locally predominant architectural styles and, were primarily influenced by the Persian and Mughal architectural nuances.

The tomb is a giant cube topped with a hemispherical dome. The entire structure is fitted on a 600 feet podium. The dome is the second largest in the world, with a diameter of almost 600 feet, next only to St. Peter’s Basillica in Rome. It is one of the largest single structure chambers in the world, and the space it encloses (almost 1700 sq.meters) is the largest in the world covered by a

single dome. Beautiful petals covering the drum are carved at its base. Staircases in the walls of the main building lead to the seven-story octagonal tower at each of the four corners. Each story has seven arched windows and all are capped by smaller domes. The seven floors of the towers are demarcated by a projecting cornice and a row of arched openings marking each level. A broad eighth story gallery, accessible by winding staircases in the four towers, circles the dome and hangs out at around 3.3 m. This gallery is an acoustic marvel and is called the “Whispering Gallery”. A commendable piece of civil engineering, this amazing echo system reflects any sound for over eleven times. It has been designed in such a way that one can even hear the faintest tick of a watch across a distance of about 37 meters within the vast dome.

The foundation of the tomb is constructed to rest on the bedrock which was presumed to prevent any unequal settlement. Unique architectural characteristic of the structure is the use of pendentives (groined compartments) to counteract the outer thrust of the dome and has not been used anywhere else in India. Use of such ingenious structures indicates the sophistication of the architecture of the period. The pendentives have a large central arch, topped by a cornice of grey basalt further crowned by a row of small arches carrying a second line of plain work holding a balustrade of 1.8 mheight over it.

The inscriptions over the south and main archway mention the date of Muhammad Adil Shah’s death as 4 November 1656. A ‘bijlipathar’ hangs over the main entrance. It is a meteorite that had fallen during the Sultan’s rule and is believed to protect the stone from lightning. The main mausoleum hall houses a square podium with steps on all four sides. In the middle is the cenotaph, marked by an elaborate wooden baldachin, the exact location of the grave of the Sultan is indicated.

A pathway links the gateway to the mausoleum to the arcaded Naqqar Khana, a building for drummers and musicians. In 1892, the Naqqar Khana was converted into a museum by the British government to house artefacts procured in the Deccan. In 1912, the museum was placed under the care of the Bijapur district collector. In 1962, it came under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The museum collection includes bidriware, sculptures, carpets, coins, manuscripts and miniature paintings.

The Whispering Gallery: A Marvel of Acoustics

The Whispering Gallery is perhaps the most celebrated feature of Gol Gumbaz. This circular balcony encircles the base of the dome, projecting outward by over 3.3 metres. What makes it exceptional is its acoustic brilliance. A soft whisper uttered on one side of the gallery can be clearly heard on the opposite side, nearly 37 metres away. Even the faint ticking of a watch can echo across the chamber up to eleven times. This phenomenon remains one of the most intriguing acoustic feats in global architecture and continues to fascinate both tourists and acoustic engineers alike.

Design Details and Symbolic Elements

The central mausoleum chamber features a square raised platform with steps on all sides. In the centre lies the cenotaph, covered by a beautifully carved wooden baldachin, marking the spot directly above Mohammed Adil Shah’s actual burial site in the crypt below. The exterior of the structure includes intricate petals carved around the dome’s base, while inscriptions above the main archway record the Sultan’s death date as November 4, 1656. One curious detail near the entrance is the presence of a “Bijli Pathar”, a meteorite that reportedly fell during the Sultan’s reign. Suspended above the doorway, it was believed to protect the structure from lightning strikes, reflecting the blend of superstition and science of that era.

The Naqqar Khana: Drumbeats of Royalty

Positioned at the approach to Gol Gumbaz is the Naqqar Khana, or Drum House, another integral element of the monument’s ceremonial layout. This two-storeyed structure was used to house court musicians who played naqqaras (kettle drums), shehnais, and trumpets to signal royal arrivals and public events. It functioned as a sonic gateway to the mausoleum, underscoring the importance of music in royal Deccan tradition. Architecturally, the Naqqar Khana features classic Islamic design, with wide arches, ornamental balconies, and balanced proportions. Though it no longer serves its original purpose, the building has been preserved as a historical monument. A path from the main gateway to the tomb leads directly through the Naqqar Khana, connecting visitors physically and symbolically to the legacy of the Adil Shahis.

The Museum Within the Naqqar Khana

In 1892, during British rule, the Naqqar Khana was repurposed as a museum to showcase artefacts from the Deccan region. By 1912, it was placed under the supervision of the Bijapur district collector, and later in 1962, it came under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Today, the museum holds an impressive collection of bidriware, sculptures, miniature paintings, coins, manuscripts, and textiles, offering insights into the art, culture, and craftsmanship of the Adil Shahi period.

Gol Gumbaz is not just a tomb; it is a testament to the ambition and grandeur of the Adil Shahi dynasty. It stands as a symbol of architectural innovation, cultural richness, and artistic excellence in South India. Even after nearly four centuries, it continues to inspire awe among historians, architects, tourists, and admirers of heritage. Whether one is marvelling at the acoustic wonder of the Whispering Gallery or exploring the artefacts in the Naqqar Khana museum, Gol Gumbaz offers a deeply immersive historical experience that is both majestic and humbling.

SPORTS & YOUTH WELFARE OF KARNATAKA

RCB Wins The Most Deserving & Glorious

“Ipl 2025” Championship

After 18 long years, it was history in the making as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally lifted their first IPL trophy. An all-round performance on what was a tricky surface eventually saw them prevail over a phenomenal Punjab Kings side at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Despite all the wax and wanes, RCB stood tall and delivered what was the winning blow under immense pump. Winning the toss, PBKS opted to bat first. RCB went for an unchanged side from the qualifier. Phil Salt (16) got off to a fiery

start but couldn’t continue as Kyle Jamieson got the better of the English opener. An incoming Mayank Agarwal steadied the ship while Virat Kohli played the anchor in what was a solid 38-run partnership. Mayank (24) was sent back to the pavilion by Yuzvendra Chahal. Undeterred by the fall of Mayank, Kohli continued to hold fort for RCB. An incoming Rajat Patidar saw VK loosen up the shackles a bit and the run-flow started advancing slightly quicker than it was in the last partnership. Patidar (26) was the next to fall as RCB needed something special to get a boost in the scoring rate.

It was Liam Livingstone whose arrival in the center offered RCB the much-needed acceleration. Livi and Virat added 35 runs for the fourth wicket before Azmatullah Omarzai got the better of Kohli for a warring 43. It was Jitesh Sharma who got a shy at glory, walking out to the mix. The RCB wicket-keeper was quick to react to the situation and started smashing on the fifth gear straight away.

Livingstone’s 25 proved to be a solid catalyst while Sharma’s 10-ball-24 allowed RCB to eye for a formidable number. However, the fall of Livi and Jitesh in quick succession left RCB rattled, reducing them to 171/6 from 17.4 overs. With two overs to go, it all boiled down to Romario Shepherd to get the fireworks in play.

The Caribbean muscleman did what he does best. He came in, unleashed a full-blown battery, smashed 17 off nine and fell to Arshdeep in the final over. At the end of their 20 overs, RCB racked up 190 for the loss of nine wickets and they needed some defending to do with PBKS’ formidable batting unit raring to go.

Priyansh Arya (24) and Prabhsimran Singh (26) got off to a solid start. The duo made an excellent use of the powerplay, rocking 43 runs from the first five overs before Josh Hazlewood stormed in with the first breakthrough. Phil Salt claimed a stunner to remove Arya. With the fall of Arya, RCB started pumping out the brakes and the chinks were soon turning into cracks.

Krunal Pandya delivered a clutch blow to PBKS’ aspirations, claiming the prized scalp of Singh. It was the Caribbean allrounder, Romario Shepherd who got the better of Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer for cheap, prying open the doors of history. Josh Inglis stood tall between RCB’s title-winning aspirations and PBKS’ resurgence. However, Krunal Pandya, RCB’s magicman for the finale, delivered a telling blow, compelling Inglis to go down the ground. Liam Livingstone claimed an absolute blinder at long-on to deliver what felt like a thunderbolt through the hearts of the Kings. Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh stepped up to do damage

control for Punjab but RCB kept the check in place. With a 38-run partnership in place, it was pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was tasked with the onus of trying to sneak in a wicket. Kumar delivered two, getting rid of Wadhera for 15 and the dangerous Marcus Stoinis for six. That one over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar is what gave RCB the muchneeded licence to go for the kill.

Shashank Singh activated his beast mode in the final over but the damage was already done by then. With 29 needed off the final six, Hazlewood delivered two dots to seal the game in the first two balls of the final over. Following that Shashank did smash the Aussie quick for 20 runs but it was inconsequential as after the last ball, Kohli fell to his knees and cupped his face in his arms, shedding a few tears, marking the end of a long wait for the title. RCB lifted the IPL trophy for the first time after 18 years of the tournament’s inception. Krunal Pandya won the Player of the Match award for his phenomenal match-winning spell.

RCB and the new captain, Rajat Patidar, were dealt a tough hand at the very start of the campaign. Three away games in the first four fixtures is a tricky prospect for any team, irrespective of the opposition. But imagine Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians as the three teams. It becomes even more daunting. KKR, CSK, and MI are the holy trinity when it comes to IPL success, winning 13 IPL titles between them. To make matters worse, RCB didn’t have a great away record against all three teams.

RCB and KKR played the first-ever IPL match in 2008. The two teams never played the opening game of the season for the next 16 years, and then 2025 happened. The toss landed in favour of Patidar, and RCB made light work of KKR’s 174/8, chasing the target in just 16.2 overs.

RCB were chasing history on two fronts. An 18-year wait to end the trophy drought and a 17-year wait to defeat CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. A thumping victory by 50 runs, and the loyal fans started to dream.

Seven matches into the season, RCB looked serious and not so serious at the same time. They managed to win their 4 away games and lose their 3 home games, a weird combination of results. RCB’s three home defeats were largely due to the toss not landing in favour of them. They made middling scores in a two-paced M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch. Then the floodgates opened all of a sudden.

RCB clawed victory from the jaws of defeat against Rajasthan Royals in Bengaluru, thanks to Josh Hazlewood’s stunning spell at the death overs. Krunal Pandya’s first IPL fifty in 9 years enabled RCB to clinch an away win against Delhi Capitals.

Romario Shepherd’s 14-ball fifty resulted in RCB’s first-ever double against CSK in IPL history.

Four wins from seven matches became eight wins from 11 matches and then everything stopped.

IPL 2025 had to be suspended for a week due to the border tensions between India and Pakistan. Josh Hazlewood’s participation was in doubt, Rajat Patidar injured his finger, Devdutt Padikkal was ruled out of the season, and all of a sudden, a promising campaign was under serious threat to become a faltering campaign.

RCB and KKR once again started proceedings, only for rain to play spoilsport. RCB’s next game against SRH was moved from Bengaluru to Lucknow due to the incessant rain. RCB went on to lose the match, and a finish in the top two position was looking unlikely.

RCB had never completed a successful chase in excess of 205, and they were asked to chase 228 against Lucknow Super Giants to secure a place in the top two. Jitesh Sharma’s maiden IPL fifty, a phenomenal 85* off 33 balls, rocketed RCB to the 2nd place.

RCB’s bowling attack, barring Romario Shepherd, has the experience of lifting IPL trophies with other teams in past campaigns. Their combined efforts toppled the incredible Punjab Kings in consecutive games and allowed Rajat Patidar to keep his end of the promise.

“Keep supporting us; we all love you. One more game, and let’s celebrate together on June 3,” Patidar said after the win against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1.

Patidar actually delivered one more thing. He completed Virat Kohli’s trophy cabinet. Virat Kohli, RCB’s loyal and longest servant, is an ODI World Cup winner, T20 World Cup winner, Champions Trophy winner, and finally, an Indian Premier League winner.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Virat Kohli ended their drought by winning a maiden Indian Premier League title, beating Punjab Kings by six runs in the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Bengaluru posted a modest 190 for nine with Kohli, their leading scorer this season, top scoring for them with a composed 43. It was, however, their bowling which secured their win after they restricted Punjab to 184 for seven despite Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 61 off 30 balls.

Kohli was in tears once he realised Bengaluru were about to shed the underachiever tag that has stuck to them. “This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It has been 18 long years,” said Kohli, who has been associated with Bengaluru since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008. “I

have given my youth, my prime. I gave it everything I have – I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled.” Put in to bat at a packed Narendra Modi Stadium, Bengaluru could not stitch together significant partnerships and fell short of the 200 mark. Kohli anchored their innings but Bengaluru could never really break loose.

Bengaluru were 87 for two at the midway stage but with enough overs left for other players to bat around Kohli. Azmatullah Omarzai deceived Kohli with a bouncer and took a running, tumbling return catch to dismiss the batter. Jitesh Sharma’s 24 off 10 balls injected some momentum into Bengaluru’s stop-start innings and Liam Livingstone made 25 but the side could not really capitalise in the final overs.

Punjab’s Kyle Jamieson took three for 48, while his new ball partner, Arshdeep Singh, bowled an excellent three-wicket final over, conceding only three runs. Punjab got off to a rollicking start in their chase and the opener Prabhsimran Singh, then on nine, was lucky to be spilled in the deep by Romario Shepherd. Josh Hazlewood, the luckless Bengaluru bowler, did not have to wait long for success though, as Phil Salt took a stunning catch in the deep to remove Priyansh Arya (24) and break the 43-run opening stand.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Virat Kohli have finally got their hands on the IPL trophy as they beat Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the IPL 2025 final at the iconic and gigantic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night. An 18-year title drought comes to an end after what was a brilliant comeback by RCB, courtesy of their bowling attack.

Virat Kohli finally gets his hands on the coveted trophy, which was missing from his cabinet so far, as his loyalty to the franchise finally pays off tonight after all these years.

While openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh did give the Kings a good start tchasing 191, featuring the latter getting dropped on 9 by Romario Shepherd, it was Josh Hazlewood who finally got the breakthrough, dismissing Priyansh on 24.

While Prabhsimran also lost his wicket on 26, the big surprise came in the 10th over when PBKS' big hitter and skipper Shreyas Iyer was sent back for just 1 run, courtesy of a caught behind off Romario Shepherd's delivery. Josh Inglis did, however, keep things going with his 23-ball 39 but was then dismissed by Krunal Pandya.

The onus was all on Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh to try and get their team to victory, but it wasn't to be, as Wadhera was picked up by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 17th over when he was caught by Krunal Pandya, giving a big relief to fans as half the team was sent back to the pavilion. Bhuvi went on to take another wicket in the same over as Stoinis was caught at third man after scoring a six off the previous ball, leaving Shashank as the only proper batter left in the chase. It was all RCB after that, as quick wickets saw the RCB bowlers restrict Punjab to just 184/7 in their 20 overs, clinching their maiden IPL title on the night by successfully defending the lowest total that has been defended on this ground this season.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya took 2 wickets each to their name followed by Yash, Josh and Romario with one wicket each in the winning cause.

Earlier, Punjab Kings (PBKS) put on a disciplined bowling display in the IPL 2025 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, restricting the Bengaluru side to 190/9 in their 20 overs. After winning the toss, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bowl first. RCB got off to a shaky start, losing opener Phil Salt early to Kyle Jamieson for just 16. Mayank Agarwal looked promising with a quick 24 before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal. Captain Rajat Patidar too failed to capitalize, scoring

26 before becoming Jamieson’s second victim. Virat Kohli anchored the innings but struggled to accelerate, eventually falling for 43 to Azmatullah Omarzai while trying to up the scoring rate. Liam Livingstone (25) and Jitesh Sharma (24) also made brief contributions but couldn’t convert their starts. In the final over, Arshdeep Singh struck thrice, removing Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar—capping off a dominant bowling effort that left RCB at 190 for 9.
