THE REMARKABLE EVOLUTION & GROWTH OF INDUSTRIES IN KARNATAKA
Karnataka, a state renowned for its cultural heritage and natural beauty, has also emerged as a powerhouse of industrial development in India. Its journey from an agrarian economy to a global hub for technology, manufacturing, and innovation is a testament to its strategic vision, adaptable workforce, and robust ecosystem. This essay explores the key milestones in Karnataka’s industrial evolution, examines the driving forces behind its growth, highlights the challenges it faces, and envisions its future as a leader in the global industrial landscape. Early industrial foundations: Karnataka’s industrial journey began even before India’s independence, driven by visionary leaders like Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The establishment of the Bangalore Woollen, Cotton and Silk Mills in 1884 and the Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory in 1916 laid the groundwork for future industrial growth. Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s emphasis on education, infrastructure development (including the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam), and the promotion of diverse industries like textiles, sugar, and soap, created a fertile ground for industrialization.
Post-independence, the state government continued to foster industrial growth, initially focusing on establishing heavy industries like iron and steel. The subsequent growth of small-scale industries further diversified the state’s industrial base. The establishment of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) also played a crucial role in laying the foundation for Karnataka’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
The IT revolution and the rise of Bengaluru: The 1980s marked a pivotal moment in Karnataka’s industrial history, as it embarked on a transformative journey towards becoming a global technology hub. Bangalore’s emergence as the “Silicon Valley of India” was fuelled by several factors: Pioneering initiatives: R.K. Baliga, then Chairman and Managing Director of Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation, conceived and championed the idea of Electronic City, an industrial park dedicated to electronics and technology.
Skilled workforce: The presence of prestigious educational and research institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) ensures a steady supply of highly skilled graduates, particularly in the IT and engineering sectors. Karnataka accounts for about 33% of the total IT talent pool in India. Government support and policies: The Karnataka government has been instrumental in promoting the IT industry through dedicated policies, infrastructure development, and a favourable business environment. The establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and software technology parks further encouraged IT and ITeS companies to set up operations in the state.
Cosmopolitan culture and strategic location: Bengaluru’s welcoming and diverse environment, coupled with its strategic location and connectivity to major cities and ports, has attracted talent and investments from across India and the globe. Startup ecosystem: Bengaluru has also become the “startup capital of India,” fostering an environment of innovation and entrepreneurship. Government initiatives and the presence of venture capitalists and angel investors further fuel the growth of startups in various sectors.
Diversification into key sectors: While IT remains a dominant sector, Karnataka’s industrial landscape has diversified significantly over the years, with strong growth in several key areas: Aerospace and Défense: Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, has a long-standing legacy in the aerospace industry, dating back to the establishment of HAL in 1940. The presence of defence PSUs, research institutions like

the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), and a strong engineering base have made Karnataka a major hub for aerospace manufacturing, R&D, and affiliated services. The state’s Aerospace Policy aims to further boost this sector, attracting investments and developing dedicated clusters.
Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals: Bengaluru is often referred to as the biotech and pharmaceutical capital of India, with over 60% of India’s biotechnology companies having a presence in the state. This sector is driven by a focus on research and development, a skilled workforce, and the presence of leading companies like Biocon and AstraZeneca. Automotive and Electric Vehicles (EVs): Karnataka is a hub for automotive innovation, with the presence of major global companies and a growing focus on electric vehicles. The state government’s encouraging policies towards EVs, coupled with a skilled workforce, attract significant investments in EV manufacturing, battery production, and charging infrastructure.
Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM): With its strong IT base, Karnataka is well-positioned to become a leader in ESDM, including semiconductor manufacturing. The state’s IoT policy and efforts to attract global players in electronics manufacturing are driving this growth. Textile and Garment: Known as the garment capital of India, Karnataka boasts a flourishing textile industry, with a focus on high-value textiles and sustainable fabrics. Government support and the ProductionLinked Incentive (PLI) scheme for textile manufacturing are further boosting its export potential.
Driving Factors and Supportive Ecosystem: Several factors contribute to Karnataka’s industrial growth: Robust Infrastructure: Karnataka boasts a relatively well-developed infrastructure, including a strong road network, growing air and rail connectivity, and improving power supply. The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has developed numerous industrial areas and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) across the state. Industry-Friendly Policies: Karnataka’s industrial policies are characterized by transparency, investor-friendliness, and a focus on attracting investments in key sectors. The recent Karnataka Industrial Policy 2025-30 aims to attract ₹7.5 lakh crore in investments and create 20 lakh jobs. It emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth, with special incentives for MSMEs, startups, and regional development.
Ease of Doing Business: Karnataka has made significant strides in improving the ease of doing business through simplified procedures, a single-window clearance system, and digitized approval processes etc., Knowledge Hub and Innovation Ecosystem: Karnataka is a knowledge hub with world-class universities, research institutions, and a thriving innovation ecosystem. It hosts numerous R&D centres and is ranked among the top five R&D ecosystems globally. The state’s focus on emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and advanced manufacturing is attracting further investments and fostering innovation.
Dr. S. E. Alexander Global Media Chief & MD
Looking ahead, Karnataka is poised to continue its industrial ascent, driven by a strategic focus on advanced manufacturing, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable practices. The new Industrial Policy 202530 aims to position Karnataka as Asia’s top destination for high-tech manufacturing investments, attract significant investments, and create substantial employment opportunities. By addressing existing challenges, leveraging its strengths, and embracing innovation, Karnataka is wellequipped to solidify its position as a global industrial leader and a crucial contributor to India’s economic growth.

INSIDE THE HEIRLOOMS WORN BY BENGALURU’S FASHION-FORWARD CROWD
Some heirlooms come strung together—rubies, pearls or silver beads passed down through generations. Others are woven into fabric—faded saris and hand-embroidered dupattas that have outlived their original owners. But what makes an heirloom special isn’t just its beauty or age. It’s also how it holds time. Like old photographs, heirlooms can freeze a moment.
They become an archive of family histories, wedding days and memorable milestones. Like Arpita Mehta’s sari—a gift from her grandfather to his wife, her grandmother, on their first wedding anniversary. Over 60 years old, the piece doesn’t just carry heritage, it also carries a love story, wrapped in silk and memory. Or take Anvitha Rao’s necklace, where Victorian inscriptions on gold British guineas have been eroded by time and touch. The coins, dating back to 1805, were collected by her great-grandfather during his trading years across India and Australia. Worn now as jewellery, they’re a reminder of both legacy and love.
Leading up to the Vogue Wedding Atelier presented by HSBC, Rochelle Pinto, Head of Editorial Content at Vogue India, and Kulsum Shadab Wahab, social entrepreneur and philanthropist, cohosted an Editor’s High Tea at the Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru at Embassy ONE. Surrounded by Farmerr’s beautiful blooms, the best-dressed people in Bengaluru enjoyed an intimate evening of couture and conversation. They left with cherished memories, a full heart and sweet mementoes courtesy of Bombay Sweet Shop. Below, Bengaluru’s most stylish tells about their precious heirlooms.

VIBRANT LIFESTYLE KARNATAKA
MESMERIZING HOLIDAY HOME AMIDST NATURE IN KARNATAKA
Contemporary innovations and ingenious construction techniques meet ecological sensitivity in this compact cabin by Okno Modhomes. When the clients of this holiday home in Karnataka—in Chikmagalur, a region renowned for its traditional and heritage buildings—approached Okno Modhomes with the concept of a serene sanctuary that blended seamlessly into its surroundings, little did they know that founders Harshit Puram and Parikshit Linga would take this brief almost literally. Tucked away deep into the woods (the lush greens are all one can see from the deck), this cosy 300-square-foot cabin carves out a sanctuary unlike most others— one that blends into its verdant surroundings almost completely.
Sustainability emerged as one of the core principles of this holiday home in Karnataka very early in the design process. “The clients’ passion for sustainability and ecological harmony was clear, and they hoped the cabin would reflect these values while offering modern comforts,” starts Puram. In a city known for its heritage, the designers wanted to introduce a new flavour—a striking design that offers an ode to nature. Thus, the design vocabulary for the holiday home emerged, best labeled as eco-futuristic to mark a harmonious blend of contemporary minimalism and sustainable design practices.
Aptly christened Reflections, the cabin is a visual treat that vanishes into its verdant setting. “As designers, we were inspired by the pristine beauty of the valley itself. Our key concept was to create a structure that would reside within nature and reflect and complement it,” explains Linga. Materials and design elements were carefully chosen to mirror the surroundings, allowing the landscape to flow inside and for the illusionary built form to appear as an extension of the landscape.
A REVOLUTIONARY CONSTRUCTION
Perched lightly upon stilts to minimise its footprint, the remarkable construction technique sets this design apart. Constructing this compact cabin—tucked away in a remote location inaccessible to cranes, trucks, or heavy vehicles—was quite the challenge, especially without disturbing the natural environment and terrain. “We at Okno aim to be pioneers in sustainable construction, and for us, designing and getting the details right takes more time than production,” Puram states. All materials are then pre-fabricated in their state-of-the-art facility in Hyderabad, manually transmitted to the site and assembled within just seven days, minimising the ecological impact while preserving the local flora,” say the designers.
This efficiency and precision in the construction technique results from a unique method employed by Okno
Modhomes. Six layers of curated materials make up the wall structure, optimising the performance. Light steel, an alloy of zinc and aluminum that does not rust and is ten times lighter than traditional steel despite similar strengths forms the core of the walls. Ensuring durability and weather resistance, layers of sheathing, water and air barriers wrap around a layer of thermo pine wood, renowned for its PEFC-certified sustainability. Custom-made aluminium composite panels envelop the exterior in a reflective surface that not only helps the cabin almost disappear into the surroundings but also provides high levels of insulation.
ONE WITH NATURE
While the reflective exterior visually integrates it with nature from the outside, the interiors of this cabin are no exception. The straightforward open-plan layout boasts expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that invite uninterrupted vistas of the valley and a flood of natural light inside.
Warm, earthy and neutral tones are celebrated inside—the natural wood finishes and subtle accents bring the outdoors inside while shades of white and beige echo the surrounding serenity. Strategically placed, the elevated deck lifts from the terrain, poised perfectly for seamless outdoor relaxation. And upon this deck lies one of the experiential highlights of the design, and a favourite element of the designers too—a motorized sliding bed that allows users to slide from the cosy, protected comfort of the indoors to the immersive tranquillity of the trees and sky outdoors at the push of a button. The jacuzzi further adds a flavour of luxury to the setting.
A testament to the design firm’s mission to revolutionise construction by introducing sustainable practices, this home is a lesson in seamlessly blending built form with natural surroundings, while retaining all the conveniences of a contemporary design.

RETAIL & SHOPPING KARNATAKA
BIGBASKET REVOLUTISED INDIAN GROCERY RETAILING IN STYLE
BigBasket, India’s leading online grocery platform, began its journey in the tech capital of the country—Bengaluru, Karnataka—in December 2011.
Founded by five visionary entrepreneurs—Hari Menon, V. S. Sudhakar, V. S. Ramesh, Vipul Parekh, and Abhinay Choudhari—the venture was born out of a shared belief that digital innovation could transform how Indians buy everyday essentials. Bengaluru, known for its startup ecosystem and tech-savvy consumer base, provided the ideal environment to launch what would become a revolution in Indian retail.
BigBasket was among the first e-commerce companies in India to focus exclusively on groceries—a sector traditionally dependent on offline shopping. By leveraging the convenience of online ordering and coupling it with robust supply chain management, BigBasket offered something unprecedented: fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, personal care items, and household necessities delivered directly to consumers’ doorsteps. This eliminated the need to visit crowded markets or juggle between multiple stores for essentials. Starting from a single warehouse in Bengaluru, BigBasket steadily expanded to major metros and eventually reached over 30 cities across
India. The platform’s reliability, wide product range, and efficient delivery slots made it a preferred choice for millions of households. Its success also spurred the creation of specialized services like BB Daily, BB Instant, and Fresho— each tailored to meet specific consumer needs such as daily essentials, vending machines, and fresh produce. In May 2021, Tata Group became the BigBasket’s owner by acquiring a majority stake of 64% in the company. Tata Sons has acquired a majority stake in BigBasket, putting the Indian conglomerate in a direct race with e-commerce players Amazon, Walmart, Flipkart, and Reliance Industries. The stake was bought by Tata Digital Limited, a unit of Tata Sons. In this article, you can find detailed information about BigBasket, including the company’s founders, history and journey, business model, revenue, funding, acquisitions, and more.
ABOUT BIGBASKET
BigBasket is into delivering everyday cooking essentials like ghee (clarified butter), diced coconut, fragrant basmati rice, and more, amounting to a total of over 40,000 items, along with other household products ranging from bread to laundry detergents for the customers to shop from. The company gets all of them delivered to their doorsteps. The target motive of the company is to enable the ease of grocery shopping online to avoid traffic and the drudgery of supermarket visits. To explore new opportunities, the
company has also launched 3 new businesses - bb Daily, bb Instant, and bbnow. bb Daily is a subscription-based service that allows customers to order milk and fresh groceries. With this platform, the customers have to place the order before 10 PM, and they eventually get the goods delivered between 5 AM - 7 AM the next day. bb Instant is BigBasket’s unmanned vending machine that is mostly available in corporate offices, tech parks, and apartment buildings in Tier I cities. bbnow, the rapid grocery delivery service by BigBasket, allows you to order daily essentials like fruits, vegetables, cooking necessities, and household items and have them delivered to your doorstep within just 15-30 minutes. BigBasket has also launched Fresho stores, which is currently serving as the first offline retail store of BigBasket that has already been opened at Basaveshwar Nagar in Bangalore. These BigBasket stores are technology-driven, self-service stores for customers.

BIGBASKET - STARTUP STORY
All of this began when the BigBasket founders decided to exploit the experience they got after the massive failure of the dot com bubble. Hence, they decided to create a unique website that was never done before. All the founders of Big Basket had garnered relevant experiences in eCommerce when they created Fabmart.com.
Fabmart.com was an online platform that sold books, toys, and groceries in the year 1999. Back then, only within a few months, they realized that not just our country but the whole world was not ready to take this buzz of digitization. In the year 2006, Fabmart was merged with a brick-and-mortar grocery chain and the founders ended up selling their startup for a lump sum amount.
Then came the golden year of 2011, when the team reunited and started re-evaluating the idea of again coming up with something new and exciting. Despite all the criticism they had received back in 1999, they stood very strong on the fact that the time to do something that’d put them on the map was then. In 2011, the smartphone market was booming
and anything and everything was available except groceries, of course, and that right then was their Eureka moment. BigBasket used to fulfill its orders by purchasing products from Metro Cash and Carry stores, prior to setting up its first warehouse. “We had people in the Metro stores, literally operating that as our warehouse” says Hari Menon, Cofounder & CEO of BigBasket.
BIGBASKET - NAME, TAGLINE, AND LOGO
Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt. Ltd., trades as “BigBasket,” the name of which is drawn from the idea of shopping baskets, which the company extends to their customers online. The recent tagline of the brand reflects “Har Din Sasta.”
BIGBASKET - BUSINESS AND REVENUE MODEL
BigBasket’s private label business is driven by lower prices and higher margins. Roughly 35% of the revenue comes from private labels. The aim here is to fill the gap in distinct categories like organic food, and high-end consumer products, to name a few. Also, the company offers a lower price point for staples and fruits and vegetables.
They also provide idli/dosa batter on their online platform, which is very rare and does not have a lot of competition. Moreover, on the B2B side, BigBasket serves its private label to about a thousand Kirana stores, huge corporates, and HoReCa (hotels, restaurants, cafes). Regarding Big Basket’s Business Model, Big Basket follows both the ‘inventory model’ and ‘the hyper-local model’. Under the inventory model, the company buys products from leading suppliers like P&G, HUL, mills, farmers, etc., stores the products in warehouses, and supplies the same to the customers on order. In the case of perishable goods, BigBasket further has tie-ups with local farmers and suppliers from whom it procures the goods as per orders and supplies the same to the customers. Under the ‘hyper-local model’, BigBasket has a tie-up with 2000+ grocery stores across India to deliver products within one hour from the neighborhood. With the opening of its physical store, Fresho, BigBasket is also a step ahead in the physical grocery space, which is soon expected to be a revenue generator for the company.
BIGBASKET - STARTUP CHALLENGES
One of the main challenges of any startup in India is getting the customers to try the service first since the resistance level is really high. This is followed by retaining these consumers despite all the other factors in the market like competitors, local vendors, and buying habits, which were there for BigBasket too. Also, since it was one of a kind startup dealing with groceries, which was never the case before, it took a while for the consumers to place trust in a brand like BigBasket and start using its services.
FUNDING AND INVESTORS
To date, BigBasket has raised a total of $1.3B in funding over 19 rounds. The latest funding for the company was raised on June 2, 2022, when BigBasket raised Rs 350 crore ($45.10 mn) from Supermarket Grocery Supplies, the holding company of the grocery unicorn. As per the reports, BigBasket had previously allocated 3.5 crore shares at a value of INR 100 per share to Supermarket Grocery Supplies on May 24, 2022. Supermarket Grocery Supplies is currently a Tata-owned company.
Tata Digital owned a majority stake in Supermarket Grocery Supplies when it acquired majority stakes in BigBasket in May 2021. Tata Digital had already invested twice previously in the company including the $200 mn investment at the time of the acquisition, and with this investment, it becomes its 3rd investment of Tata. The previous round dated April 13, 2022, infused $131 mn in the company. The grocery eCommerce platform saw this funding round after a long time since its previous round dated April 15, 2020, from Debt Financing. Recently, the Commission of India approved Tata Digital’s acquisition of BigBasket. Tata Group is believed to have acquired a 64.3% stake in the grocery delivery unicorn BigBasket. The deal is estimated to be $1.2 Billion, giving BigBasket a post-money valuation of over $2 Billion.
ACQUISITIONS
Big Basket has made 6 acquisitions to date. Their most recent acquisition was of Agrima Infotech, which the company acquired on February 19, 2022. The Tata-owned online grocery delivery platform has acquired the enterprise business segment of the Kerala-based deep tech company. This deal would allow the company to implement the unique computer vision technology platform, Psyight, at the self-checkout counters of the retail stores of BigBasket. Psyight behaves as a food recognition platform that is powered by the all-new computer vision technology to differentiate raw, cooked, and packaged food items, which will help its parent ahead. DailyNinja was last acquired startup by BigBasket and the deal was materialized on Mar 24, 2020. In June 2015, the company acquired ‘Delyver’, an online platform that connects offline retailers with customers in a neighborhood. In October 2018, Big Basket acquired ‘Raincan’ a subscription-based service provider for morning and breakfast essentials, headquartered in Pune. In October 2018, Big Basket also acquired ‘KWIK24’ a company that manufactures and designs smart vending machines. On October 19, 2018, Big Basket announced the acquisition of the Bangalore-based startup ‘Morning Cart’. Morning Cart is a daily essential ordering platform.

TATA-AIRBUS TO
SET UP INDIA’S
FIRST PRIVATE HELICOPTER
ASSEMBLY LINE
IN KARNATAKA
Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus are jointly establishing India’s first private helicopter assembly line in Karnataka. The Airbus H125 will be assembled at Kolar, with operations commencing in 2026. This makes India the fourth country to host such a facility. The plant aims to produce ten helicopters annually initially, potentially increasing production. Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) and European aerospace major Airbus are jointly establishing India’s first privately led helicopter final assembly line (FAL) in Karnataka, with the Airbus H125 set to be assembled at a newly developed site in Kolar district. Government sources told TOI that TASL has acquired 740,000 square feet of industrial land in the Vemagal Industrial Area near Bengaluru, where the company is building a fully integrated facility covering manufacturing, final assembly, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) operations. The plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2026.
This project will make India the fourth country globally to host an H125 final assembly line, following existing facilities in France, the US and Brazil. The Indian plant is expected to produce ten H125 helicopters annually in its initial phase, with provisions to ramp up capacity in alignment with Airbus’s forecast for over 500 H125class helicopters to be required across the Asia-Pacific region over the next two decades. The Vemagal facility will handle key integration tasks including avionics and mission systems, electrical harnesses, hydraulic systems, flight controls, dynamic components, fuel systems and engine integration. The plant will also undertake full testing and qualification procedures, aligning with Airbus’s global safety and certification protocols.
Karnataka was selected for the investment after a competitive bidding process that also involved Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. State officials added that Karnataka’s established aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, skilled talent base, and existing infrastructure gave it an edge. The Airbus H125 is a leading platform in the intermediate single-engine helicopter category, holding about 80% global market share with over 4,300 units in service worldwide. It belongs to Airbus’s Écureuil family and has collectively logged more than 38 million flight hours. The new facility marks a strategic step in India’s efforts to build indigenous capabilities in rotorcraft manufacturing and deepen private-sector participation in defence and aerospace production. Queries sent to TASL and Airbus seeking comment on the project remained unanswered at the time of publishing.
MEN & WOMEN OF HONOUR KARNATAKA
ANANT NAG
THE LEGENDARY KANNADA
ACTOR’s ADORABLE
JOURNEY TO STARDOM
In January 2025, the announcement of India’s prestigious Padma Awards made headlines nationwide—and among the standout honourees was veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag, conferred with the Padma Bhushan for his extraordinary contribution to the arts. This recognition marked not just a personal milestone, but also a broader affirmation of India’s rich regional cinema, theatre heritage, and the enduring power of subtle, authentic storytelling. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Anant Nag has delivered over 300 impactful performances across Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, alongside notable work in television and theatre.
EARLY LIFE & FORMATIVE ROOTS
Anant Nag, born on September 4, 1948, in Shirali, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, hails from a Konkanispeaking Saraswat Brahmin family. His father, Sadanand Nagarkatte, was a businessman, and his mother, Anandi, was a homemaker who instilled in him the values of discipline, tradition, and culture. Due to his father’s transferable job, Anant’s childhood was spent in various towns like Karwar and Dharwad, allowing him to become fluent in multiple languages including Kannada, Konkani, Marathi, and Hindi. He shared a particularly close bond with his younger brother, Shankar Nag, a legendary actor and director known for the cult television series Malgudi Days and several hit Kannada films. Together, the Nag brothers formed a dynamic duo in the Kannada film industry, often referred to as the “Nag Brothers,” whose artistic chemistry and contributions left a deep impact on cinema and television. Tragically, Shankar Nag passed away in a car accident in 1990, a loss that profoundly affected Anant but also strengthened his resolve to carry forward his brother’s legacy. Anant Nag is married to Gayatri, a graceful and private individual who has consistently supported
him throughout his life. The couple leads a peaceful and low-profile life, away from the public eye. They have a daughter named Aditi, who also maintains a private life, ste¬ering clear of the spotlight. Anant’s family has played a vital role in providing him with emotional strength, cultural grounding, and personal balance, which reflect in his dignified persona and versatile performances across theatre, cinema, and television. Though he briefly ventured into politics, his identity has remained deeply rooted in art and culture, influenced largely by his family values and upbringing. Together, the quiet strength of his family and the artistic brilliance of his bond with Shankar Nag have defined Anant Nag’s remarkable life and enduring legacy. During his youth, he studied in various settings across coastal Karnataka, including Udupi and Chitrapur. His exposure to Indian traditions and communal learning environments profoundly shaped his artistic and moral compass. In his mid-teens, he moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) for further schooling—a move that introduced him to the vibrant world of theatre—a turning point in his journey.
THEATRE & THE ARTISTIC AWAKENING
It was in Mumbai’s theatre circuits—especially Marathi, Konkani, Kannada, and Hindi—that Anant Nag first found his calling. He appeared in dramas on the lives of historical spiritual figures like Saint Chaitanya and Buddha, as well as in contemporary realist plays. Over several formative years, he acted in more than 50 roles across genres, each marked by deep conviction and emotional honesty. Under the mentorship of luminaries like Girish Karnad, Satyadev Dubey, and Y. N. Krishnamurthy, Nag refined his skills in internalized performance, natural expression, and emotional restraint. His theatre training emphasized authenticity over theatrics, giving him a distinct style that was understated yet deeply resonant. His stage presence, emotional nuance and multilingual fluency made him stand out rapidly.
ENTRY INTO CINEMA: PARALLEL ROOTS AND NATIONAL GATEWAY
Anant Nag transitioned to film in the early 1970s. His debut came in G. V. Iyer’s subversive Kannada feature Sankalpa (1973), which earned critical acclaim at the state level. However, his national breakthrough came via director Shyam Benegal, who cast him in Ankur (1974)—a landmark of India’s parallel cinema. Subsequently, he delivered notable performances in Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Kondura, and later Kalyug, demonstrating a remarkable command over
layered, socially relevant storytelling. In these films, Nag’s hallmark became realism conveyed through restraint. He rejected exaggerated melodrama in favor of subtle, believable portrayals—capturing everyday human complexity with remarkable clarity. His sensibilities, grounded in theatre discipline, birthed characters that lived rather than performed. These works earned him respect among critics and audiences of serious cinema.
RISE TO STARDOM IN KANNADA CINEMA
While establishing himself on the national parallelcinema stage, Anant Nag simultaneously dominated Kannada cinema. Rajaneeya roles in Bayalu Daari, Hamsageethe, Naa Ninna Bidalaare, Chandanada Gombe, and Benkiya Bale made him a household name, with his on-screen pairing with actress Lakshmi becoming particularly iconic.
The 1980s brought socially conscious cinema: Minchina Ota (1981) and Accident (1984)—both directed by his younger brother Shankar Nag— explored themes like urban distress and political corruption. Nag’s grounded performances helped drive these stories’ emotional core and critical acclaim, even if they weren’t major box-office hits. Recognized for his consistency and range, he earned multiple Karnataka State Best Actor Awards and Filmfare Awards South, solidifying his reputation as one of the most dependable and respected actors of the time.
NATIONAL FAME VIA TELEVISION MALGUDI DAYS
Nag’s impact transcended the silver screen with his memorable roles in the celebrated television anthology Malgudi Days (1987), directed by Shankar Nag. Based on R. K. Narayan’s enduring tales, the series showcased Anant in several episodes, exposing him to audiences across India. His portrayal—full of warmth, authority, and understated humanity—endeared him to audiences unfamiliar with Kannada cinema. In doing so, he transformed into a pan-Indian face, connecting theatre, regional cinema, and countrywide television with seamless authenticity.
TRANSITION TO MATURE ROLES & COMEDY
By the 1990s, Anant Nag had gracefully evolved into character and comedy roles, without losing his artistic dignity or screen presence. Films like the Ganesha series, Gowri Ganesha, and Hendthige Helbedi showcased his adeptness at timing, expression, and subtle humour. He continued to remain relevant into the new millennium. Films like Mungaru Male (2006), Gaalipata (2008), Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu (2016), Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale (2018), Kavaludaari (2019), K.G.F (2018 & 2022), and Gaalipata 2 (2022) all featured him in pivotal roles alongside younger actors and directors, proving his timeless appeal. His portrayal of an Alzheimer’s patient in Godhi Banna… was praised for depth and emotional sincerity; in Gaalipata 2, he brought gravitas and sweetness as a college professor. His choices reflected a carefully curated oeuvre: intelligent, emotionally rooted cinema, often experimental, always sincere.
AWARDS, RECOGNITION & SOCIAL RESPECT
Anant Nag has won five Karnataka State Best Actor Awards, six Filmfare Awards South, and received the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Lifetime Achievement Awards, and even an honorary doctorate—each recognizing different facets of his long-standing contributions. His reputation extended beyond cinema: respected for his clean image and humility, he earned admiration from peers across industries as someone who consistently elevated his craft without compromise.
THE PADMA BHUSHAN 2025: A NATIONAL SALUTE
In the Republic Day honours list announced on 25 January 2025, Anant Nag was named among 19 individuals nationwide awarded the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service in Art. Among those from Karnataka were violin maestro L. Subramaniam (Padma Vibhushan), journalist A. Surya Prakash, music composer Ricky Kej, folk-artist Venkappa Ambaji Sugatekar, and others. On 27 May 2025, President Droupadi Murmu formally conferred the award at the civil investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. In her citation, the Ministry of Home
Affairs highlighted Anant Nag’s versatility, his contribution to theatre, cinema, and television, and his role as a cultural bridge across languages and generations. Nag publicly described the honour as “long overdue.” He specifically credited the public nomination mechanism implemented by the government, thanking Kannada audiences, film fraternity, and spiritual mentors. In his acceptance remarks, he humbly dedicated the award to the people of Karnataka, his late younger brother Shankar Nag, and all those who cultivated and supported his journey in art.
ARTISTIC PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURAL LEGACY
Anant Nag’s acting philosophy is centered on restraint, naturalism, and truthful character portrayal. Inspired by realist film traditions and grounded theatre practices, he avoided grandstanding or theatrics—preferring sincerity over spectacle. This approach influenced emerging filmmakers and actors in Kannada cinema and beyond. Directors like Girish Kasaravalli, Yogaraj Bhat, Rishab Shetty, and Hemanth Rao sought him out not just for his public image, but for his emotional depth and integrity. Beyond cinema, he remained rooted in Sanatana culture, spirituality, and a belief that art should reflect deeper truths about human experience—and never chase commercial shortcuts. This ethos has made him an enduring symbol of Karnataka’s culturally rich film heritage.
The Padma Bhushan awarded in 2025 underscores Anant Nag’s enduring contribution across mediums—theatre, television, cinema—and across linguistic and cultural borders. For many critics and fans, the honour was long overdue, but perhaps perfectly timed as a national recognition of his role as a cultural ambassador of Kannada cinema. The award also marks an institutional acknowledgment of substance over style: of an artist who chose depth over spectacle, values over vanity, and quiet consistency over fleeting stardom.
By receiving the award at age 76, Anant Nag became, symbolically, a link between Karnataka’s spiritual, theatrical roots and its cinematic legacy—a bridge between generations, languages, and the evolving faces of Indian storytelling.
Anant Nag’s life and artistry exemplify the transformative power of sincerity, discipline, and cultural authenticity. From performing saintly figures in spiritual plays to embodying the complexity of ordinary Indians on screen, his journey reflects an unbroken dedication to art with integrity. Over five decades and hundreds of roles later, the Padma Bhushan of 2025 stands not just as a personal accolade but as a national salute to an actor who chose depth over glamour, and lived his roles instead of performing them. As cinema continues evolving, Anant Nag remains a timeless emblem of the transformative power of lived storytelling—one that transcends borders, generations, and fleeting trends. His legacy is firmly etched in the annals of Indian cultural history.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS OF KARNATAKA
Soapstone Sculpture in Karnataka The Eternal Legacy in Stone
In the diverse artistic landscape of India, Karnataka occupies a distinguished place for its exceptional sculptural traditions. Among the many materials used for carving, soapstone, also known locally as “balapada kallu”, stands out for its unique characteristics—soft, workable when freshly quarried, and remarkably durable once exposed to air. This fine-grained metamorphic rock has enabled generations of sculptors to produce awe-inspiring works that reflect the cultural, spiritual, and architectural richness of Karnataka. From temple reliefs to intricate idols, soapstone carving has shaped the region’s visual and devotional identity for over a millennium.
Understanding Soapstone: A Medium of Art
Soapstone, a form of metamorphic rock primarily composed of talc, is prized for its malleability. When quarried, it is soft and can be easily carved with precision. As it dries and oxidizes, the stone hardens, preserving even the most delicate carvings for centuries. Its smooth texture and neutral tones— ranging from pale grey to bluish-green and deep black—make it ideal for detailed artwork. What sets soapstone apart is its ability to hold high-resolution detail and resist weathering, making it perfect for Karnataka’s humid, tropical climate. These features have made it the medium of choice for many architectural and religious works, especially in the Hoysala period, which is renowned for its ornate, lace-like stone sculptures.
Historical Roots: The Evolution of Soapstone Sculpture
The roots of soapstone sculpture in Karnataka can be traced back to the Chalukya dynasty (6th–12th century CE). The temples at Aihole, Badami, and Pattadakal contain some of the earliest examples of this craft. However, it was during the Hoysala dynasty (10th–14th century CE) that soapstone sculpture reached its zenith. The Hoysalas patronised art and architecture extensively, and under their rule, artisans developed a highly intricate style of stone carving. The use of soapstone allowed sculptors to achieve an unmatched level of detail. The Chennakeshava Temple in Belur and Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu are two magnificent examples of this period, where the use of soapstone enabled incredibly complex narrative friezes and life-like deities.
The Hoysala Masterpieces
Hoysala temples serve as some of the finest examples of soapstone artistry. Unlike the monolithic style of earlier South Indian temples, Hoysala structures are known for their star-shaped plans and profusely ornamented surfaces. Every inch of these temples is carved with depictions of gods, dancers, musicians, animals, and floral motifs—each rendered with exquisite precision.
In Belur, the Chennakeshava Temple is a veritable gallery of stone craft. Scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata are portrayed in elaborate panels, and the friezes feature hundreds of elephants, no two alike. Soapstone facilitated such craftsmanship, allowing artisans to work for decades on a single temple. Halebidu, once the Hoysala capital, houses the Hoysaleswara Temple, where twin shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva are adorned with over 240 intricately carved figures of deities. The dexterity required to carve out such complex imagery from soapstone is a testament to the high level of skill attained by the artisans of the time.
Techniques and Tools Used in Soapstone Sculpture
Soapstone carving is both an art and a science, requiring skill, patience, and experience. The traditional process involves the following steps:
• Stone Selection: Artisans select freshly quarried blocks of soapstone from sources like Sagar, Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru.
• Rough Carving: Using chisels and hammers, basic shapes and outlines are formed. This stage requires a strong understanding of anatomy and form.
• Detailing: Small chisels, files, and pointed tools help sculpt intricate patterns, jewelry, and facial expressions. This is the most time-consuming phase.
• Polishing: The final piece is polished with natural oils or wax to give it a rich sheen and protect the surface.
• These techniques have been passed down through generations. Even today, many traditional sculptors do not rely on modern machines, preferring the authenticity of hand tools and human touch.
Religious and Cultural Significance
Soapstone sculpture in Karnataka is not just an artistic endeavor—it is deeply embedded in the region’s spiritual life. Temples serve not only as places of worship but also as cultural centres, and the sculptures act as visual scriptures for devotees. Each figure carved in soapstone conveys a religious narrative, an ethical lesson, or a symbolic gesture. The deities carved from soapstone, such as Vishnu, Shiva, Lakshmi, Durga, and Ganesha, embody traditional iconographic rules of Hindu temple art. The mudras (hand gestures), abhangas (postures), and attributes held by the deities are not random; they reflect precise theological and philosophical meanings.
Additionally, many Jain and Buddhist monuments in Karnataka— like the Bahubali statue at Karkala and Shravanabelagola—are either made from or flanked by soapstone carvings, highlighting the cross-religious significance of this sculptural tradition.
The Soapstone Belt: Geographical Reach in
Karnataka
Karnataka is rich in soapstone deposits, especially in regions like Sagar (Shivamogga), Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Tumakuru. These areas have served as the primary supply zones for centuries. Artisans often live close to these quarrying sites, forming guilds and communities centered around sculpture and temple construction. Even in more remote districts like Ballari, Koppal, and Bagalkot, soapstone continues to be quarried and used for local religious structures and household idols. In many of these places, carving is not only a cultural practice but a key part of the local economy.
Modern Adaptations and Contemporary Soapstone Art
With the decline of royal patronage and the shift towards industrial materials, traditional soapstone sculpture faced a period of stagnation during the colonial era. However, in the post-independence era, government institutions and heritage enthusiasts helped revive interest in this classical form. Today, soapstone is used not only in temples but also in home décor, handicrafts, murals, and sculptures for urban and global markets. Contemporary artists are experimenting with both traditional and modern themes—from mythological deities to abstract forms and fusion sculptures. Institutes like the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and Karnataka Shilpakala Academy play an important role in training and promoting young sculptors. Annual sculpture camps and exhibitions continue to keep the tradition alive while infusing it with fresh creativity.
Challenges Faced by Soapstone Sculptors
Despite its artistic glory, the soapstone sculpture tradition in Karnataka faces numerous challenges today:
• Depleting Resources: Over-quarrying has led to a reduction in quality and availability of soapstone.
• Lack of Patronage: The decline in temple construction and the preference for cheaper materials affect artisans’ livelihoods.
• Youth Disinterest: The younger generation, especially from traditional sculpting families, is moving away due to the hard labor and lower returns.
• Modernization: Mass-produced statues and machine-carved replicas are replacing handcrafted works, undermining the uniqueness of the art form.
Despite these issues, passionate sculptors and heritage groups are trying to protect this legacy. NGOs and cultural trusts offer support, training, and marketing avenues for artisans.
Prominent Soapstone Sculptors of Karnataka
Several master sculptors from Karnataka have made lasting contributions to this art. Notable names include:
• Jakanachari – The legendary 12th-century sculptor believed to have built many Hoysala temples.
• Shilpi Srinivasa Rao – A modern sculptor known for his work in contemporary religious statuary.
• K. Laxman Rao – Celebrated for preserving traditional forms while teaching new generations of sculptors.
These sculptors, among many others, embody the spirit of Karnataka’s rich sculptural heritage. Their efforts have inspired both national and international recognition of the state’s soapstone artistry.
Soapstone Sculpture in Popular Culture and Education
Soapstone sculptures have become a vital part of Karnataka’s tourism and educational curriculum. Sites like Belur and Halebidu attract lakhs of tourists annually, many of whom marvel at the soapstone carvings without necessarily knowing the history or process behind them. Guided tours and interpretation centers help bridge this gap by educating visitors about the material, craftsmanship, and legends associated with these sculptures. Moreover, art and design schools in Karnataka now include modules on traditional sculpting techniques. This exposure is encouraging a new wave of young artists to study and revive the craft in innovative ways, including merging sculpture with digital art and animation.
Economic Impact and Artisan Welfare
Soapstone carving also holds economic significance, especially in rural Karnataka. Many artisans depend on temple commissions, private sculptures, and export markets. Government-run Khadi and Village Industries Boards (KVIB) and Cottage Industries departments have introduced schemes to promote soapstone handicrafts under the Geographical Indication (GI) and Handicraft Clusters programs. Still, the need for comprehensive support— such as subsidies for tools, easier market access, and fair trade platforms—remains high. Empowering artisans through cooperatives and digital platforms can help bring this traditional art to a global audience while ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
Conservation and Preservation of Soapstone Monuments
Several soapstone sculptures and temples are under threat from neglect, pollution, vandalism, and climate effects. Conservation efforts led by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and INTACH aim to protect these historical sites through chemical treatments, structural repairs, and digital documentation. Awareness campaigns are also conducted to involve local communities in preserving their cultural landmarks. Proper conservation techniques—such as avoiding water-based cleaning, controlling humidity, and installing protective canopies— are crucial to preserving the intricate carvings for future generations.
The Future of Soapstone Sculpture in Karnataka
While the challenges are many, the future of soapstone sculpture in Karnataka is far from bleak. With increasing interest in cultural heritage, heritage tourism, and handmade crafts, there is renewed hope. Initiatives like “Shilpi Mela”, craft fairs, and international exhibitions provide new platforms for sculptors. Digital technology, too, is becoming a friend of tradition. Virtual museums, 3D scanning of temple art, and online sales are helping Karnataka’s soapstone sculptors reach global audiences. When supported by policy, education, and community participation, this timeless art has the potential not just to survive but to thrive in the 21st century. Soapstone sculpture in Karnataka is more than just a craft—it is a legacy of devotion, creativity, and resilience. Rooted in millennia-old traditions yet adapting to the changing times, this form of art continues to enchant onlookers and inspire creators. From the star-shaped temples of the Hoysalas to the humble idols in village shrines, soapstone’s quiet beauty and artistic grandeur are woven into the very soul of Karnataka’s heritage. By cherishing, supporting, and reviving this ancient tradition, we honor not only the sculptors of the past but also create a meaningful bridge between heritage and modernity.
HOTELS, RESTAURANTS & HOSPITALITY OF KARNATAKA
COMAL
A Must Try Mexican Restaurant In Bengaluru
It took a road trip through Mexico for Alfonso Cuarón to direct Y tu mamá también; it inspired chef Varun Pereira and entrepreneur Pratheek K Reddy to come up with a restaurant. Comal in Spanish refers to the pan or tava on which tortillas are traditionally made. It’s an integral part of Mexican cuisine and culture, going back to the Aztec Era. Every Mexican kitchen has one! The chef’s deep interest in South American and Latin-American cuisine and the lack of authentic Mexican restaurants in Bangalore (except some Tex-Mex options) meant the city was ready to discover something more than just tacos, nachos, salsa, and churros. But as with all great stories, it all started with an epic journey.
THE TEAM
Chef Varun has honed his culinary craft over two decades, from the Taj and The Park Hotels to iconic kitchens like Olive Beach, Monkey Bar, Sly Granny and Lupa, besides a brief stint in London. Pratheek Reddy has a background in engineering, real estate and infrastructure; his love for food and a long-cherished dream of setting up a restaurant found them collaborating to set up Reper Hospitality, a portmanteau of their names. In July 2024, they spent a month in Mexico, the world’s second largest city, exploring street food to Michelin star restaurants. While staying in La Condesa-Roma, hailed as ‘Barrio Magico Turistico’ or ‘the magic neighbourhood for tourists’, they signed up for Airbnb experiences like market tours and cooking classes for salsa and tortilla making, to understand local flavours. From spices and chillis to curries, they found a strong connection between Mexican and Indian cuisine.
THE SPACE
The founders picked up what was earlier a Pizza Hut outlet at Trinity Circle on MG Road. In sections, the brick walls have been deliberately exposed to echo the rustic chic Mexico City vibe with pops of colour provided by framed paintings and bric-a-brac. There are Mexican touches throughout the 41-seater restaurant such as Gothic arches, a cactus light fixture made by Chef Varun’s friend, handpainted tiles by Pune-based artist Shibani Diwalkar, and a mural near the entrance by Bonda Soup Art Studio, known for their eye-catching artworks.
There are visual cues like decorated skulls from Dia de Los Muertos or Day of the Dead parade, mandatory Frida Kalho imagery, Calavera costumes to Talavera tiles. The enigmatic eagle forms the brand logo. “The Mexican flag, local transport, all the cast iron drain covers had the eagle emblem, so we used the Aztec version,” says the heavily tatted Chef Varun. He hasn’t got an eagle tattoo yet, but very soon, he promises. With a carpet area of 1,450 sq ft, the kitchen is the biggest space with diner-style seating for 12 around the counter so guests can interact with the chef and catch all the action with festive Mexican music playing in the background.
THE FOOD
Though the menu was originally taco forward, it revolves around platos chicos (small plates) for guests to try more variety. It took Chef Varun barely a fortnight to pull off the menu and after an initial selection of 47 dishes, they settled on 35, including desserts. Start with a bowl of pickles—assorted pickled vegetables with corn cream and tajin furikake. Pratheek calls the loaded chilaquiles “tortilla on steroids”’. Unlike the usual guacamole loaded with tomato, onion, cilantro and green chillis, the Mexican-style guac has only salt, lime, and tomatillos with the creaminess coming from imported Haas avocados. CDMX Fried Chicken (short for Ciudad de Mexico, the code for Mexico City) is like Aztec karaage served with salsa macha and banana hot sauce. The showstopper is the melt-inyour-mouth Carne Asada or roast beef tenderloin cooked as a skewer, served with Chile Butter and Scallion Salsa. Camarones El Diabolo features shrimp with smokey Goan choriz (similar to Mexican sausages), salsa diabla, butter bean mousse, and pickled kohlrabi. If you have a ramen fixation, try the spicy Birria Consommé with lamb neck and ramen noodles.
Pork Belly Chicharron has crackling pork with grilled plantains. Another delicacy is the juicy Aguachile Tostada Mixto, a Mexican ceviche with the seabass and shrimp cured in salt, lemon, and aji amarillo (yellow chilli) and confit calamari swimming in a love potion of agua chile water with cucumber and jalapeño. Unlike the Peruvian version, there are no corn kernels but a corn tortilla chip adding the crunch. All the chillis, avocados, and masa (corn dough) for tortillas are imported, though they intend making their own masa soon. Interestingly, Mexico has 37 varieties of corn but none can cross the international boundary, so they plan to source corn from Punjab and have identified local vendors growing Mexican chilli varieties. Unlike regular corn flour, masa is gluten free. A shawarma station turns out grilled meats for tacos. The pick of the tacos is Al Pastor, with slow roasted pork, grilled pineapple, and Salsa Mexicana. The simple Aguacate, inspired by iconic restaurant Pujol, has avo, stewed onion, poblano cream, pineapple salsa, and signature golden brown cheese crust. The founders toyed with the idea of not having mains at all but being at a prime location on MG Road with a significant corporate crowd for lunch, they decided to include ensaladas (salads) like Tijuana Caesar Salad, Cantina Bowls and platos grandes (large plates) like Roasted Whole Fish and Comal Roast Chicken. The chicken is brined for 24 hours and dry aged for 24 hours before being jammed into the rotisserie – half a chicken for one portion. To round off all the tantalizing flavours, there’s Postres (dessert) with signature churros, Buñuelos Sundae with creamy scoops of vanilla custard, caramelised banana and dulce de leche, and vanilla soft serve with citrus marmalade.
THE DRINKS
Bebidas (drinks) include a heavenly horchata with rice, condensed milk, vanilla, almonds, cinnamon and charred pineapple compote, refreshing Hibiscus Agua Fresca and a version with fizzy orange and grapefruit, besides Orange Float with vanilla custard soft serve and orange soda. For a small place, an alcohol license doesn’t make economic sense yet, but they’re open to bar takeovers and mezcal-based cocktails in the future. Launched on 6 December, Comal toasts the warm and casual cantina food and vibe that Mexico is so beloved for.

ROYAL HERITAGE & ARCHITECTURE OF KARNATAKA
A 1,000-YEAR-OLD STEPWELL IN SUDI, KARNATAKA
is now being restored to its Chalukyan glory
Not many know of Sudi, a town often skipped by travellers following roads leading to the popular site of Badami in Karnataka. But for those who dare to venture, it offers a glimpse of splendid architecture that harks back to an era gone by. Once a major trading town commanded by the Kalyani Chalukyas, Sudi is home to several temples and a stepwell named Nagakunda. Lying dusted and deteriorating against the test of time, these monuments are now being restored by the Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF).
“Chalukyan princess Akkadevi – one of the few medieval women known to have ruled territory and led armies in her own name – was active [in Sudi] from the 1020s to 1050s. She constructed the spectacular Mallikarjuna shrine (originally Akkeshvara, Akka’s Lord),” shares historian and author Anirudh Kanisetti. He further adds that it was Nagadeva, the deputy of Akkadevi’s nephew Someshvara, who commissioned the twin-towered Jodu Kalasha temple along with the Nagakunda, back then. This stepwell is exactly the kind of marvelous artistry that the Chalukyas have come to be known for. Designed as an inverted temple, it features elements of a temple’s exterior on the inside of the well. A thousand years later this January, the DHF signed an agreement with the Government of Karnataka in the presence of Mr HK Patil,
Minister of Tourism, to restore the Nagakunda stepwell and other 10th- and 11th-century monuments in Sudi— all under the government’s Adopt a Monument scheme. For this, the DHF is being joined by Heritage Matters and the Water Literacy Foundation, with generous funding from Rajashree Pinnamaneni in memory of her late father Dr. Subba Rao Devineni. The project will unfold in two phases. The first will involve connecting the stepwell to natural aquifers, restoring it as a source of drinking water for the locals. Alongside, landscaping of surrounding areas will ensure regular groundwater recharge for maintaining this hydraulic system. The second phase will see the restoration of the Ganesha Shrine, two mantapas—one housing a Sivalinga and the other, a Nandi—and the Jodu Kalasa temple.
“A photogrammetric survey conducted by Professor Kailash Rao a decade ago provides valuable data on the degree of stone deterioration [at these sites]... One pressing concern is the noticeable pulverisation of stone into powder in some areas,” shares Sarath Chandra, conservation architect at Heritage Matters, confirming that, “The restoration will prioritise halting further stone deterioration and carefully removing insensitive modern interventions added in recent decades.”
The overall site development will also include the revival of historical connections between the stepwell and the surrounding monuments, restoring the spatial linkages that once defined the landscape. The first phase of the project is set to be completed later this year. By the end, the hope is for Sudi to regain a spot on India’s cultural map as a destination with its own architectural soul, only an hour away from Badami.

SPORTS & YOUTH WELFARE OF KARNATAKA
INAUGURATES DISTRICT-
LEVEL SPORTS MEET IN SHIVAMOGGA
MINISTER MADHU
BANGARAPPA
Shivamogga: The vibrant city of Shivamogga came alive with enthusiasm as Karnataka’s Minister for School Education, Madhu Bangarappa, inaugurated a districtlevel sports meet and cultural competitions for state government employees at Nehru Stadium. Organized by the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, the event marked a celebration of camaraderie, talent, and healthy competition among participants. The sports meet, a significant initiative to promote physical fitness and teamwork, saw government employees from various departments across the district gather to showcase their athletic and cultural skills. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Minister Bangarappa emphasized the importance
of such events in fostering unity and boosting morale. “Participate with full enthusiasm and give your best,” he urged, encouraging the competitors to strive for excellence. He further motivated the winners to carry their momentum forward and represent Shivamogga at the state-level competitions. The event wasn’t just about sports; it also featured cultural performances that highlighted the rich diversity and creativity of the participants. From traditional dances to musical performances, the cultural segment added a festive touch to the day, captivating attendees and showcasing the multifaceted talents of Karnataka’s government workforce. In his address, Bangarappa also touched upon the state government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its employees.
He assured the gathering that efforts are underway to resolve key issues within the next year, reinforcing the government’s dedication to its workforce. Additionally, the minister shared an update on educational reforms, announcing plans to recruit 13,000 teachers to strengthen the state’s education system. This announcement was met with appreciation, reflecting the government’s focus on improving both employee welfare and public services.
1. Promoting Grassroots Participation
The sports meet engages a diverse group—state government employees—who may not typically participate in competitive sports. By providing a platform for non-professional athletes, it fosters grassroots involvement, a critical foundation for any thriving sports culture. Encouraging adults from various departments to compete can inspire wider community participation, including among youth who see role models in these employees. This inclusivity helps normalize sports as a lifelong activity, not just for elite athletes.
2. Boosting Employee Health and Morale
Physical fitness among government employees directly contributes to a healthier workforce, which can translate to better public service delivery. The meet promotes wellness through activities like athletics, team sports (e.g., volleyball or kabaddi, common in such events), and even fun recreational games. Healthier employees may advocate for sports programs in their communities, amplifying the message that physical activity is essential. Additionally, the camaraderie built through competition strengthens workplace cohesion, indirectly supporting initiatives like sports policy advocacy.
3. Creating Pathways to Higher Competitions
Madhu Bangarappa’s call for winners to advance to state-level competitions underscores the meet’s role as a talent pipeline. While participants are employees, not professional athletes, identifying standout performers can uncover hidden talent or inspire individuals to pursue sports more seriously. For Karnataka, where sports like wrestling, athletics, and hockey have strong roots, such events can act as feeders to regional and state championships, strengthening the state’s competitive edge.
4. Enhancing Local Sports Infrastructure Visibility
Hosting the event at Nehru Stadium in Shivamogga highlights existing sports facilities, drawing attention to their upkeep and utilization. Public events like these can pressure local authorities to maintain or upgrade infrastructure, benefiting aspiring athletes across the district. Increased visibility may also attract funding or sponsorships for sports programs, creating a ripple effect for academies, schools, and clubs in Karnataka.
5. Fostering Community Engagement and Sports Culture
The inclusion of cultural performances alongside sports makes the event a community celebration, drawing families, colleagues, and local residents. This holistic approach embeds sports into the social fabric, encouraging spectators to support or participate in future events. In Karnataka, where cricket often dominates, such meets diversify attention toward other sports like athletics or traditional games, enriching the state’s sports culture.
6. Government Backing and Policy Momentum
With a minister like Bangarappa, who oversees education and has influence in youth affairs, championing the event, it signals government commitment to sports. His mention of recruiting 13,000 teachers suggests a focus on holistic education, which often includes physical education. This meet could catalyze policies prioritizing sports in schools or workplaces, addressing gaps in coaching, funding, or facilities across Karnataka.
7. Regional Pride and Motivation
Shivamogga, a hub of cultural and economic activity in Karnataka, hosting such an event fosters regional pride. Success stories from the meet—whether a standout athlete or a viral moment—can motivate other districts to organize similar events, creating a state-wide network of sports meets. This decentralization strengthens Karnataka’s sports ecosystem by ensuring opportunities aren’t limited to urban centres like Bengaluru.
The sports meet at Nehru Stadium was more than a competition—it was a platform for connection and celebration. Employees from different sectors bonded over shared goals, cheered for their colleagues, and created memories that would last beyond the event. The minister’s presence and words of encouragement added a layer of inspiration, motivating participants to push their limits and take pride in their contributions to the state. As the day concluded, the spirit of Shivamogga’s government employees shone brightly, setting the stage for future events that blend sports, culture, and community. With the promise of state-level competitions on the horizon, the participants left the stadium with renewed energy and determination to make their mark. This initiative by the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, backed by leaders like Madhu Bangarappa, underscores the importance of holistic development and employee engagement in building a stronger, more connected Karnataka.

TRAVEL, TOURISM & LEISURE OF KARNATAKA
MESMERIZING MONSOON SAFARI EXPERIENCES ACROSS Karnataka
Amonsoon safari isn’t what one would normally think of for a getaway, but given the geographical expanse and the different weather conditions in those geographies, many nature parks and wildlife reserves around the karnataka are open all year round, including during the monsoon. Much-awaited sightings of wildlife might be harder, but the monsoon safari experience is mesmerising and magical. Apart from that though, there are many other reasons to go on safari at this time of year: prices are slashed and as many don’t know that parks are actually open, crowds are at a minimum. Some parks also choose to remain open through the year because closing them off to visitors and shutting the parks down completely may give poachers free rein, with no crowds. Most naturalists and park guides strongly believe that the monsoon makes the forests come alive, with rare species of plants, elephants revelling in the rain and tigers making their mark. Here are the wilderness areas and national parks you can visit in the monsoon, and the experiences you can have there.
AGUMBE WESTERN GHATS
Tucked deep in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Agumbe is a small rainforest village where the canopy hangs low, the air stays thick, and the rains arrive like clockwork. During the monsoon, the forest exhales and everything begins to move. As the rainforest begins to breathe again, slick with mist, humming with frogs, thrumming with insect wings, things begin to stir underfoot. This 20-22 June Ecophis Wildlife is leading a herping expedition based out of Hingaara, a quiet nature stay set in what was once Malgudi town. These guided nocturnal walks into the surrounding rainforest are a chance to tread the forest floors on foot, instead of in a safari jeep, while searching for signs for reptiles and amphibians. In Agumbe, a recognised biodiversity hotspot, it doesn’t take long before the sightings stack up. You will find malabar pit vipers coiled in shrubs, hump-nosed pit vipers curled on forest floors, cat snakes draped over low branches, and gliding frogs and bush frogs flash their colours between vines.
WHY TO VISIT :
Sunset: Sunset view from Agumbe is a scene to behold. Do visit during sunset time and enjoy the captivating moments from the dedicated viewing deck.
Participate in treks: Select expert groups organize monsoon and post monsoon curated treks to Agumbe, helping you witness rare species of snakes, frogs, insects and other wild fauna and flora. Check here
Waterfalls: Within a short radius of 5kms from Agumbe one can experience several untouched waterfalls-Barkana falls, Jogi Gundi waterfalls and Onake Abbi falls. Partly accessible by road and further by foot, it is best visited post monsoon season.
14 Hairpin bends: Climbing up and down the hill requires negotiating 14 sharp hairpin bends. Full size buses and trucks are not allowed on the hill. Drive yourself if you are up to it or take a ride in a bus and watch how local drivers carefully negotiate the turns.
Malgudi Days: Several scenes of popular television serial Malgudi Days, based on RK Narayan’s novel, were shot around this place. This is one such place where you can not only surround yourself with the beauty of greenery and fresh air but also delve into nostalgia as you visit the Malgudi Days house, reminiscing those memorable days of storytelling and visualizing how the house and the entire surrounding could have possibly looked and felt like.
Lake & Boating: A small lake with boating facility is available near the forest check post.
