LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF FOOD & HEALTH INDUSTRY

The intersection of food and health has always been a fundamental aspect of human existence, but the dynamism characterizing this relationship today is unprecedented. Fueled by rapid technological advancements, a burgeoning global population, shifting consumer preferences, and an increasing emphasis on sustainability, the food and health industries are undergoing a profound transformation. This essay will explore the latest developments, trends, innovations, and technologies shaping these interconnected sectors, highlighting their impact on public health, food security, and the future of both industries.

Technological revolution in food production and processing: Smart farming and precision agriculture - Technology is revolutionizing agricultural practices, optimizing resource utilization and boosting efficiency. Precision agriculture, powered by IoT sensors, drones, and data analytics, allows farmers to monitor crop health, soil conditions, and optimize water and fertilizer use. This minimizes waste, reduces environmental impact, and enhances food quality. Vertical farming, a prime example, utilizes stacked layers to grow crops indoors in urban areas, yielding high outputs while minimizing land and

water consumption. In fact, vertical farming can allow for year-round production, reducing reliance on seasonal crops and shortening the distance food travels from farm to plate.

AI and automation in food processing and manufacturing: Artificial Intelligence and automation are streamlining food processing, packaging, and quality control. Smart factories employ robotic arms, AI-powered quality control systems, and automated packaging lines for heightened efficiency and consistency. AI is also being leveraged for predictive analytics, optimizing supply chains and enabling tailored nutrition solutions based on data analysis of consumer preferences, market trends, and even genetic information. Robotic chefs and kitchen assistants are also emerging, revolutionizing the hospitality industry by enhancing precision, speed, and safety in food preparation. Advanced food preservation and processing techniques: Innovation in food preservation technologies is extending the shelf life of products while maintaining their nutritional value and taste.

Techniques like high-pressure processing, pulsed electric fields, and modified atmosphere packaging are gaining traction, allowing for longer shelf life, safer products, and enhanced sensory attributes. Freeze-drying technology, for instance, is increasingly popular due to its ability to preserve nutrients, flavor, and

appearance, while extending the product’s shelf life. Shifting consumer demands and the rise of personalized nutrition: A growing number of consumers are making proactive health choices, impacting the food industry significantly. There’s a heightened demand for health and wellness foods, with functional foods offering specific health benefits, clean label products, and low-sugar or natural sweetener alternatives. Personalized nutrition is gaining momentum, with individuals seeking tailored dietary recommendations based on their genetics, lifestyle, and health goals. This is leading to a boom in products designed for specific needs such as gluten-free, lactose-free, or diabetic-friendly options.

Focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing: Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental and social impact of their food choices, leading to a rise in demand for sustainable and ethically sourced products. This is driving the adoption of eco-friendly packaging, a focus on fair trade, and responsible ingredient sourcing. There’s also a growing interest in alternative proteins, including plant-based options, fungi-based mycoproteins, algae-based proteins, and even precision-fermented or cultivated proteins. Consumers are actively seeking products that align with their values and offer transparency regarding their environmental and social

footprint.Convenience and personalized food solutions: Modern lifestyles are driving demand for convenient, healthy food options. This translates to increased popularity of ready-to-eat meals, meal kit delivery services, healthy snacks, and easy-to-prepare alternatives. The growth of e-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands is also reshaping the industry, providing consumers with wider access to health-focused products and personalized shopping experiences.

Innovations in medical technology and healthcare delivery: AI, IoT, and data analytics in diagnostics and treatment - AI, IoT (Internet of Things), and data analytics are transforming healthcare delivery, enhancing efficiency, precision, and patient care. AI-powered tools assist in early disease diagnosis, personalized treatment planning, and even surgical assistance. IoT devices, such as wearable sensors and smart pills, enable continuous patient monitoring and provide real-time data for analysis. Big data analytics provides deeper insights into patient outcomes, disease patterns, and optimizes clinical workflows.

Telemedicine and Remote-care: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the adoption of telemedicine and remote patient monitoring. Virtual consultations, remote diagnostics, and at-home monitoring devices are making healthcare more accessible and convenient, especially in rural or underserved areas. This shift is changing the traditional hospital-centric care model to a more patient-centered approach that prioritizes convenience and preventative care.

Blockchain for enhanced security and traceability: Blockchain technology is being applied in healthcare for improved data security, traceability, and patient empowerment. By creating an immutable record of patient data, transactions, and the pharmaceutical supply chain, blockchain enhances trust, transparency, and ensures data integrity. This is particularly crucial for addressing issues like drug counterfeiting and managing electronic health records.

Advanced medical devices and treatments: Technological advancements continue to drive innovations in medical devices and treatments. This includes the development of more sophisticated surgical tools, patient-specific implants crafted using 3D printing, and noninvasive or minimally invasive therapies. Gene editing technologies like CRISPR and stem cell therapies are also advancing, promising breakthrough treatments for a range of diseases. Addressing global challenges through

food and health innovations: Food security and sustainable food systems: Amidst the challenges of a growing population and climate change, food and health industries are working to ensure global food security. Sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture, vertical farming, and alternative proteins are offering solutions for minimizing environmental impact and building resilient food systems. Initiatives focusing on reducing food waste at all stages of the supply chain, from production to consumption, are critical for optimizing resource utilization.

Though there have been many trends and developments, which keep coming into vogue and outsmart each other in recent times; These are just some of the highlights of the dynamic and evolving food and health industries this year. However, the focus remains on innovation, sustainability, personalization, and leveraging technology to create a healthier future for both people and the planet.

Female Athletes: Common Sports Injuries and Prevention:

Sports participation comes with a host of mental and physical benefits, for people of all genders. But it comes with some risks, too. Women and girls have risk factors that can make them more likely than male athletes to experience certain injuries or health problems.

Common Sports Injuries in Female Athletes:

As a result of women’s unique anatomy and hormones, they are at an elevated risk of certain sports injuries. The injuries most common in female athletes include:

• Knee injuries

• ACL injuries, especially those that are not caused by contact with another athlete

• Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee)

• Patellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee)

• Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff injury

• Plantar fasciitis

• Stress fractures

• Ankle sprains

• Concussions

Pregnancy & Sports Medicine:

Today, more women are remaining not only active but athletic during their pregnancies. While guidelines on exercise during pregnancy are available, most do not address highlevel athletes — leaving many questions unanswered for these women. The Women’s Sports Medicine Program promotes the advancement of knowledge surrounding pregnancy and sports medicine through research and education.

Dr. KMD’s RCIHG’s Experts, including obstetricians, sports medicine specialists and physical therapists, provide comprehensive care for women who wish to remain active during pregnancies. Through a collaborative approach, RCIHG provide activity-specific treatment plans while maintaining awareness of the restrictions and modifications that are required during this phase of life.

Sports Injuries in Women 55 and Older and Tips to Prevent Them:

Older bodies are more likely to have stiff tendons, decreased strength and reduced range of motion. All these can contribute to injuries such as back strain, sprains and muscle and tendon injuries.

Falls and Fractures: Falls are a major health risk for people as they age, especially women with thinning bones. One bad fall can put an older adult on the bench for Weeks, months or even permanently. “Women are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, making brittle bones and fractures a real concern,” Expert says, adding that wrist injuries and facial trauma are particularly common in older adults who fall.

Heat-related Illness: “Heat illness such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very common since older people cannot regulate internal temperature as easily as younger adults,” Expert says. “Staying hydrated is essential, especially when playing sports outdoors in warm weather.”

Knee Issues: “Women are particularly vulnerable to knee injuries such as cartilage or ligament tears. This is because their hips are wider, which creates a different angle of stress on the knee during physical activity,” she explains. “Make sure you warm up beforehand and wear the right kinds of shoes for the sport you’re playing. ”Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can also reduce stress on the knees and lower risk of torn cartilage and other painful conditions.

Nonsurgical Treatment: Nonsurgical treatment consists of physical therapy, activity modification and use of a brace. The goal of physical therapy is to strengthen the muscles around the knee to compensate for the absence of the ACL. Specifically, strengthening the muscles in the back of the thigh (the hamstrings) is helpful. Activity modification can be very successful. Sports that do not involve cutting, such as jogging, cycling or swimming, can often be performed successfully. In addition to therapy and activity modification, the use of a hinged sports brace can be attempted. While bracing may be effective in some patients, in others, instability episodes may continue despite their use.

HCG MANAVATA CANCER CENTRE PERFORMS SCARLESS BUCCAL MUCOSA CANCER SURGERY

In a triumph of precision oncology, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) successfully performed a scarless intraoral surgery on a 33 year old male diagnosed with buccal mucosa (cheek) cancer. The procedure, which incorporated Sentinel Node Biopsy (SNB), marks a major step forward in preserving both form and function, offering patients a future without visible reminders of their battle. The tumour was completely removed through the inside of the mouth and reconstruction was performed using the patient’s own fat tissue, resulting in a seamless recovery without external marks. The surgery was performed in less than two hours and the patient was discharged within three days. SNB is a targeted procedure to find and test the first lymph nodes draining a tumour. Doctors inject a safe radioactive tracer near the tumour to map the sentinel nodes. Removing and testing them reveals the cancer spread, guiding treatment plans without extensive surgery.

“The young patient from Dhule, had come to the hospital deeply anxious, not just about the disease, but also about the permanent scars and functional impairments often associated with traditional head and neck cancer surgeries.

Thanks to the use of SNB and advanced intraoral techniques, our surgical team was able to accurately identify lymphatic spread using a specialized dye, thereby avoiding unnecessary neck dissection and the associated trauma, complications and scarring,” says Prof Dr Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services and Managing DirectorKIMS Manavata Hospitals, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre and Six Sigma, Nashik.

The surgery was led by Dr Nagarkar alongside a multidisciplinary team including Dr Sirshendu Roy, Dr Koustabh Kumar, Dr Rajendra, Dr Mohsina, Dr Vishal, and Dr Zaid. HCG Manavata Cancer Centre continues to set new standards in advanced, patient-centric oncology care by combining surgical brilliance with compassion and cuttingedge technology.

“To see a young man walk in fearful and walk out cancer-free, scar-free and smiling is the most fulfilling part of what we do. Our goal is not just to cure the disease but to ensure our patients return to life feeling whole, physically and emotionally,” concludes Dr Nagarkar.

About HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC): -

Established in 2007 by Dr Raj Nagarkar, HCGMCC – Nashik is Central India's first NABH-accredited facility. With over 54 consultant oncologists, 900 staff members and a 275-bed capacity, HCGMCC is a leading institution, offering holistic cancer treatment. Specializing in surgical, radiation and medical oncology, the centre has conducted 95,000 surgeries, including 1,600 plus robotic-assisted procedures. JJ Valaya’s East is a regal ode to cross-cultural imagination

FNH - FASHION & TRENDS

For the Grand Finale of India Couture Week, the House of Valaya’s AW25 collection travelled from the Far East to India—fusing storytelling, heritage, and haute couture. Travel—across time, cultures, and borders—has long been a source of inspiration for master couturier JJ Valaya. Marking yet another landmark in the brand’s legacy of storytelling through timeless designs, the House of Valaya unveiled its Autumn/ Winter 2025 showcase, East, at Hyund-

ai India Couture Week. Set against the evocative backdrop of the 17th and 18th centuries, East took guests on a fascinating journey through the mystique of the Orient—blending art, fabric, and fantasy through opulent textiles and rich Indian craftsmanship. The collection unfolded in three cultural chapters: the Far East, the Balkans, and India. Each segment offers a romanticised interpretation of these regions, from the tranquil philosophies of the East to the richly layered

influences of the Balkans, culminating in the grandeur of Indian heritage. Crafted for both women and men, the collection married luxurious fabrics—silks, velvets, brocades, organza, and tulle—with a colour palette inspired by ancient trade routes: muted spice tones, antique neutrals, and deep bridal reds. This season’s showcase also featured the House’s iconic bridal masterpieces—an ode to regal artistry and enduring elegance—serving as the grand finale of this cultural odyssey.

For Valaya, the bridal silhouette is not merely a garment—it is an emotional canvas. “Brides and grooms are the true canvases of couture,” he explains. While modern couples may have cosmopolitan tastes, their wedding day often sees them return to tradition. East honours this sentiment by blending heritage with contemporary sensibilities, creating pieces that celebrate one’s roots while reflecting individuality.

Two of the House’s signature elements— the Alika jacket and the Chevron motif— took on new life in this collection. The Alika jacket, a timeless shirt-jacket silhouette introduced over a decade ago, remains constant in form but adapts to the theme of each season. Limited to just six editions annually, it is styled in myriad ways—from saris to jeans. The Chevron, described by Valaya as his “little piece of magic,” is a reinterpretation of the classic motif with a subtle shift he calls the “shifting leaf Chevron. In East, this motif appeared in an unprecedented form: the first-ever Chevron lehenga, a couture innovation that bridges tradition with bold, modern artistry.

For Valaya, a couture show is not just about the clothes—it’s a fully orchestrated experience. The set, sound, makeup, hair, and choreography are all designed to work in harmony with the garments. Months of preparation lead up to a 25–30 minute presentation that seeks to immerse the audience in a world crafted entirely to complement the collection’s narrative. Since returning from a sabbatical between 2017 and 2019, JJ Valaya’s label has been on a remarkable growth trajectory. What began with a flagship store in Delhi has expanded into a multifaceted brand that includes the couture label JJ Valaya, the ultra-luxury line JJ Valaya Muse, the bridge-to-luxury label JJV Kapurthala, and Valaya Home for interiors. This year, the brand is expanding from one to eight stores across India, marking a new chapter in its legacy. “I’m genuinely looking forward to what lies ahead,” Valaya reflects—a sentiment that mirrors the spirit of East: forward-looking yet deeply anchored in heritage.

FNH - SPIRITED LIFESTYLE

Today, OPPO India sets the vibe–and the countdown–for its Reno14 Series launch on 3rdJuly with its newest brand film under the ‘Live the Aawara Life’ campaign. After Ranbir Kapoor teased fans by name-dropping his “Aawara Gang”–Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ishaan Khatter and Pooja Hegde–OPPO India has now unveiled the full story, and it’s a joyride of spontaneity, friendship, and rediscovery. Rooted in Reno’s philosophy of living in the moment, the campaign positions the Reno14 Series as the ultimate travel companion –capturing fleeting experiences and turning them into unforgettable memories. In this fun-filled adventure, Siddhant, Ishaan and Pooja ditch their routine lives and hit the road, chasing

forgotten dreams and fresh beginnings. The film opens in a chaotic urban office, where Monday blues and corporate hustle feel all too real. A casual exchange of messages sparks something deeper–a longforgotten promise, a memory half-buried. In an instant, the trio escapes the mundane, embarking on a soul-refreshing journey to the mountains.

Every frame brims with fun, laughter, and the camaraderie that only old friends can share. Fuelling this road trip is the iconic ‘Aawara Hoon’ anthem–now reimagined as a tribute to freedom. The OPPO Reno14 Series joinsin as more than a phone–it becomes the fourth companion. With its flagship-level camera system, it freezes every raw, candid, mid-laughter moment with crisp clarity. After 18 years of building a remarkable legacy as Asia’s biggest electronic dance music (EDM) festival, Sunburn Festival is set to mark a new chapter as it brings its flagship edition to India’s entertainment capital, Mumbai, for the first time. The festival will take place on December 19th, 20th and 21st, 2025, in Mumbai, a city that mirrors the vibrancy, pulse and scale of Sunburn. Founded in 2007, Sunburn has long stood as a symbol of India’s embrace of global music culture. Over nearly two decades, it transformed Goa into a thriving music tourism hotspot, hosted some of the world’s most prominent DJs, welcomed hundreds of thousands of fans and firmly embedded itself in the cultural imagination of a generation. Goa has given Sunburn its heartbeat and helped shape its legacy as Asia’s leading dance music festival. Looking ahead, Sunburn stays committed to its community and guided by a recent fan survey, found that one in two respondents were keen to explore the flagship festival outside of Goa, with a clear preference for Mumbai. The move comes at a moment when Sunburn

Festival’s stature on the global circuit has never been stronger. This year, the festival secured the #8 position on DJ Mag’s prestigious ‘Top 100 Festivals of 2025’ list, a testament to its ability to stay relevant, push boundaries and deepen its connection with generations of dance music fans. This next step reflects Sunburn’s evolution from a destinationdependent festival to something more profound: a state of mind that can thrive wherever its community gathers. The 2025 edition brings that state of mind into sharper focus, unlocking a more immersive experience with stronger infrastructure, wider accessibility and the unmatched energy of India’s cultural capital.

More information about Sunburn Festival 2025 is available on BookMyShow, India’s leading entertainment destination. Exclusive pre-sale of tickets for RuPay Credit Card holders goes live on August 12th at 12 PM (Noon) while General On-Sale of tickets for the festival opens for all starting August 14th, 2025 at 12 PM (Noon) on BookMyShow.

Speaking on the development, Karan Singh, CEO, Sunburn, said, “Nearly two decades ago, we set out with a simple yet powerful vision, to create a world-class electronic dance music experience in India. What followed was the beginning of a movement, with Sunburn Festival becoming one of the first to put India on the global entertainment map and shape a thriving music tourism culture. Goa has been an integral part of that story and will always be close to us, but building a legacy also means taking it forward. Bringing Sunburn to Mumbai feels like the right step, creating new energy and connections in a city that never stands still. The city’s creative pulse and deep ties to youth culture make it the perfect stage for what’s next. With the support of the Government of Maharashtra, we’re proud to help shape Mumbai’s rise as India’s festival capital, and I can’t wait to see what we build together this year.”

Atul Patne, Principal Secretary of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, added, “Maharashtra has always been at the forefront of shaping India’s cultural and entertainment economy and music is a vital part of that vision. By bringing landmark experiences like the Sunburn Festival to Mumbai, we are actively building a robust music tourism ecosystem, one that attracts global attention, fuels local enterprise and positions our state as a thriving

direction, ‘Ascend: Beyond the real’, is a portal to a realm where the boundaries of time, space and self begin to blur. Mystical and otherworldly, it invites every soul to rise beyond the physical and step into a heightened dimension shaped by sound, light and frequency. Here, music is more than rhythm; it’s a force that fractures reality into pixels and possibility. It’s a transformation, an ascent into the extraordinary. This thematic approach reflects the brand’s

commitment to positioning Sunburn as a gateway to elevated, immersive and future-forward music experiences.

Sunburn Festival’s expansion into Mumbai signals a thoughtful shift, supported by the Government of Maharashtra, which recognises the festival’s role in reinforcing the city’s status as India’s growing festival capital. With landmark global and homegrown festivals like Lollapalooza India and

destination for next-generation cultural experiences.” Mumbai holds a special place in India’s live music history as Sunburn hosted Avicii’s groundbreaking performance in 2011, our debut into Mumbai, Swedish House Mafia’s record 25,000 in 2013 and Martin Garrix’s massive 50,000 in 2018. Moments like these laid the foundation for many more global artists to follow in a city that has always embraced Sunburn with arms wide open. The festival’s new creative

Mahindra Blues already established in the state along with bespoke concerts with artists including Martin Garrix, Alan Walker, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Guns N’ Roses, amongst others, Mumbai is steadily strengthening its position as the country’s go-to destination for large-scale, globally renowned music and cultural experiences. While embracing this new chapter, Sunburn Festival 2025 stays true to the elements that have made it a cultural mainstay: chart-topping international and Indian acts, massive stage designs and cutting-edge production that together have cemented its place among the world’s leading music festivals. Since 2007, legendary artists including Martin Garrix, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, Alan Walker, Armin van Buuren, DJ Snake, Tiësto, The Chainsmokers, David Guetta and Hardwell have graced Sunburn’s stages, making it a must-play for electronic music’s biggest names and a must-attend for millions of fans. The new MoonSwatch Mission to Earthphase - Moonshine Gold features the beloved cartoon character, Snoopy.

Appearing for the first time in the Omega x Swatch Bioceramic MoonSwatch collection, Snoopy has a unique connection to space exploration and Omega. How did a cartoon beagle, often found lazing on the roof of his doghouse in the Peanuts comic strip, become a hot property in horology? Thank NASA when it picked Snoopy as its mascot for the Apollo space programme. At the height of the Space Race in the 1960s, the American space agency needed a friendly and widely recognisable symbol to humanise the high-risk space missions, especially in the wake of the tragic Apollo 1 incident in 1967. A Silver Snoopy Award was later created as a way for the astronauts to recognise the contributions of NASA’s employees and vendors. In 1970, Omega was awarded the Silver Snoopy for the role that its Speedmaster timepiece—also known as the Moonwatch—played in guiding the Apollo 13 crew safely back to Earth after encountering technical issues in space.

Omega Speedmaster

Snoopy:

In 2003, Omega released the first Speedmaster—nicknamed the Moonwatch—to feature the classic image of Snoopy. It revisited this theme only twice since—once in 2015 to mark the 45th anniversary of Apollo 13, and

again in 2020 to honour 50 Years since receiving the Silver Snoopy. These Snoopy-themed Omegas are prized today not just for their scarcity but also because of their connection to space exploration. Now this beloved cartoon character has found its way to the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch, Mission to Earthphase- Moonshine Gold, which will be available in select Swatch boutiques worldwide only on August 9, 2025.

1. ITS LINK TO MAN’S FIRST LANDING ON THE MOON:

On July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to have his feet on the surface of the moon, followed by his co-pilot Buzz Aldrin. Guiding them where no man had gone before were the Speedmaster watches strapped on their wrists. Four years earlier, Omega beat out several watch companies to become the official watch supplier for NASA’s Human Space Flight Program after its Speedmaster survived the rigorous thermal, shock, vibration and vacuum tests. In November of 1969, four months after the historic landing, Omega presented the Speedmaster BA145.022 watch in yellow gold case and burgundy bezel to Armstrong and Aldrin at the Astronaut Appreciation Dinner in Houston, Texas. The latest Speedmaster is modelled after this watch.

2. SAME DESIGN, DIFFERENT MATERIALS:

The case is 18k Moonshine gold, a new alloy inspired by “the moonlight in a dark blue sky”. It is paler than traditional yellow gold (the case material for the Armstrong and Aldrin’s Speedmaster)

but promises to keep its beautiful lustre longer. The burgundy bezel is now crafted in ceramic decorated with a tachymeter scale in Ceragold, an Omega-developed technique where gold is incorporated into ceramic. Meanwhile, the solid gold dial is embellished with indexes set with black onyx.

3. A STUNNING CASEBACK

A ring in Moonshine gold that underwent two separate laser ablation processes and treated in black and blue PVD, frames the sapphire crystal caseback. This method allows for the unique decoration on the ring. There is a partial map of the American continent that included Cape Kennedy (now Cape Canaveral), the lift-off site of Apollo

11. On the opposite side, you will find a domed lunar meteorite inlay of the Moon. The transparent crystal reveals the Moonshine gold-plated main plate and bridges of the Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, endowed with the Co-Axial escapement and silicon Si14 balance spring.

4. IT COMES IN AN AWESOME BOX

Unboxing the watch will be as much of a joy. The package features ceramic panels with 3D prints of the moon surface – no two boxes are the same since the panels are structured differently. The top of the box is printed with the image of the Sea of Tranquility, the landing position of the Apollo 11 on the moon.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

HOW TO MAKE RICE WATER FOR HAIR, ACCORDING TO A PRO HAIRSTYLIST

You may have heard about rice water shampoo lining store shelves, but did you know you can easily make rice water for hair right at home? This age-old hair treatment is simple, cost-effective, and relies on ingredients you likely already have in your pantry. While it’s currently enjoying a surge in popularity on social media, rice water has a long and fascinating history that stretches back over a thousand years. The practice of using rice water for hair dates back to Japan’s Heian

Period (794 to 1185 CE). Historical records suggest that women at the time would wash their hair with the starchy water leftover from rinsing or soaking rice. These women were known for their incredibly long, healthy hair—often reaching the floor—which they maintained through regular use of rice water. Over the centuries, the tradition has persisted in various parts of Asia, with modern beauty enthusiasts rediscovering its benefits for strengthening, softening, and nourishing the hair.

Why Rice Water Works for Hair

Rice water isn’t just a cultural beauty secret—it’s backed by science and nutrition. The water contains amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, helping strengthen hair strands from root to tip. It’s also rich in antioxidants, which can protect hair from damage caused by environmental stressors, as well as vitamins such as B and E that support overall scalp health and improve the hair’s appearance. Regular use of rice water can:

• Strengthen the hair shaft, reducing breakage.

• Smooth frizz and enhance shine, making hair look healthier.

• Aid in detangling, making it easier to comb through knots.

• Improve hair elasticity, helping prevent split ends.

For those with natural, curly, or textured hair, rice water can be particularly beneficial as it supports length retention while adding softness—without stripping moisture from the strands.

How to Make Rice Water for Hair

The method is straightforward and doesn’t require special tools. Here’s a simple stepby-step process:

• Measure the rice – Take about ½ cup of uncooked rice. White rice, jasmine rice, or even basmati rice works well.

• Rinse the rice – Quickly rinse under running water to remove any dirt, dust, or surface starch that isn’t needed.

• Soak the rice – Place the rinsed rice in a clean bowl and add 2 to 3 cups of water. Let it soak for 30 minutes to an hour.

• Release the nutrients – Swirl the rice in the water a few times during soaking to help release vitamins, minerals, and amino acids into the water.

• Strain the rice – Pour the water through a sieve into a clean container or jar. This nutrient-rich liquid is your rice water treatment.

Making Fermented Rice Water

For an even more concentrated formula, you can ferment the rice water. Simply leave the jar at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours before using it. Fermentation is believed to lower the pH of the rice water, making it closer to that of the hair and scalp, which can enhance its effectiveness. Once fermented, store it in the refrigerator and use within a week.

How to Apply Rice Water to Hair

There are a few ways to apply rice water, depending on your preference: Pour directly – Lean over a sink or stand in the shower, slowly pouring the rice water over your scalp and hair. Spray – Transfer the rice water to a spray bottle and spritz it evenly across your scalp and strands.

Dropper application – Use a dropper bottle for targeted application to specific areas of the scalp. After applying, let the rice water sit on your hair for about 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then follow up with a moisturizing conditioner to lock in hydration. This step is important because rice water, while nourishing, can sometimes make hair feel slightly stiff if used alone.

Frequency of Use

Most people benefit from using rice water once a week or once every two weeks, depending on their hair’s needs. If your hair starts feeling dry or overly stiff, reduce the frequency or ensure you always follow with a deep conditioning treatment. Rice water is a centuries-old beauty secret that continues to prove its worth in modern hair care routines. Easy to make, rich in nutrients, and suitable for most hair types, it offers a natural way to boost shine, strength, and overall hair health. With just rice, water, and a little patience, you can create an effective DIY treatment that rivals many commercial products—without the hefty price tag.

HOTELS & RESTAURANTS

Accor, a global hospitality leader, is advancing its commitment to environmental responsibility through innovative initiatives to reduce food waste and promote sustainable culinary practices across its hotels in India. From strategic buffet planning to ecoconscious cocktail preparation, the Group is reimagining hotel kitchen operations with sustainability at the heart of its food and beverage philosophy. In highvolume service periods, such as breakfast buffets, Accor hotels in India have introduced smarter systems including the use of smaller plates to encourage mindful portioning, chef-led real-time replenishment, and batch cooking aligned precisely with guest flow.

These practices are supported by daily tracking of occupancy and food consumption patterns to ensure production closely matches actual demand. At Novotel Guwahati GS Road, made-to-order breakfast options such as eggs, parathas, and dosas help avoid overproduction. Buffet portion sizes are deliberately kept small and replenished as required, while waste is measured separately across the kitchen, buffet, and plate. At Pullman New Delhi Aerocity and Novotel New Delhi Aerocity, the Lumitics Smart Waste Tracker is

used at the Farmer’s Basket restaurant to monitor food waste through AI. Additional initiatives include mindful dining tent cards, a ‘No Bin Policy’ in the staff cafeteria, and event catering aligned with minimum guarantees. An in-house organic waste converter transforms food scraps into compost or supports energy generation.

Novotel Hyderabad Airport engages guests through “Waste Not” posters that display previous day’s food waste. Small portioning, live counters, and batch-

wise production are standard practice, and waste data is tracked daily using Gaia, a digital sustainability management platform, to monitor and optimise food consumption. Team engagement is driven through regular town halls. The hotel also participates in the RUCO (Used Cooking Oil) programme and maintains a kitchen garden for herbs and vegetables. At Novotel Goa Candolim and Novotel Goa Resort & Spa, buffet operations have been enhanced with smaller plates, chef-supervised refilling, batch cooking based on guest numbers,

and surplus ingredient repurposing in accordance with strict safety guidelines. Daily briefings include shared data on waste and consumption trends.Novotel Kolkata Hotel & Residences uses realtime occupancy data and historical trends to guide breakfast planning. Live counters for items such as dosas and pancakes minimise overproduction, and edible trimmings are creatively reused to reduce waste. At Pullman Chennai Anna Salai, a comprehensive Food Waste Reduction and Zero-Waste Kitchen programme is in place.

The hotel, which holds a LEED Gold Certification, employs manual waste tracking, precise meal planning, strict inventory control, and streamlined buffet presentations. An on-site organic composting unit converts food waste into nutrient-rich compost for the hotel’s landscaped areas, underscoring Accor’s commitment to placing “People & Nature at the Heart of our Sustainability Strategy.”

These cohesive, multi-layered initiatives reflect Accor’s determination to lead the industry not only in hospitality but in environmental responsibility. By focusing on food waste reduction, resource optimisation, and raising awareness among guests and teams, Accor is setting a powerful example of sustainable dining in the modern hospitality landscape.

KITCHEN WORLD & FOOD PLANET

Why “STATEMENT STOVES” Are Taking Over Kitchen Design, According to Experts

Centerpiece-worthy ranges are now turning kitchens into design showcases. It used to be that the kitchen workhorse— the range—needed to blend in, not stand out, among the room’s other fixtures and features. But lately, a not-so-quiet revolution has been simmering: the rise of the statement stove. These aren’t your average stainless-steel appliances. They’re drenched in unexpected colors, wrapped in brushed brass or burnished copper, and often front and center in kitchens that feel more like chic gathering spaces than utilitarian prep zones. Of course, there’s more to this movement than just a pretty face. Today’s most coveted stoves aren’t just beautiful—they’re smart, efficient, and professional-grade.

“A range is no longer just a cooking appliance—it’s a centerpiece,” says Ricardo Moraes, CEO of L’Atelier Paris Haute Design, a luxury appliance brand known for its French-inspired bespoke designs.

“And clients are embracing that idea.”

To better understand why this oncehumble appliance is now the focal point of the high-end modern kitchen, we spoke to three industry insiders helping to shape the trend. Together, they help us break down the recipe behind the rise of the showstopping range—rooted in personalization, power, and polish.

Why Statement Stoves Are on the Rise

The rise of the statement stove is tied to larger shifts in how we live, cook, and design our homes. Moraes points to a noticeable post-pandemic effect. “Over the past five years, we’ve seen a steady rise in homeowners and designers choosing custom and bold finishes for their ranges,” says Moraes. As more people began using their kitchens not just as places to cook but as spaces to gather, work, and unwind, interest in appliances that not only performed but also looked good began to surge.

According to designer Caren Rideau, founder of The Kitchen Design Group in Los Angeles, another significant shift shaping the market right now is the rise of induction cooking, especially in cities moving away from gas.

“Induction cooking is rapidly gaining traction, particularly in urban areas where city regulations increasingly favor electric appliances,” she explains. Even more traditional brands like Lacanche are working to introduce all-electric ranges, giving homeowners the choice of a full induction cooktop. Beyond compliance, Rideau says, there are clear performance incentives for an induction stovetop, such as faster heating times and precise temperature control. “Making them a favorite among culinary enthusiasts,” she adds. It’s in-demand features like these that have shoppers skipping the big-box retailers in favor of brands that offer serious customization—and not-socoincidentally, the added opportunity to create a true statement stove.

What Makes a Stove a Statement?

So, what exactly makes a stove worthy of the spotlight? Whether it’s through shade, scale, or shine, the best ones create a moment that feels intentional and elevated. For Rideau, the essentials for a statementworthy range are color, size, and, of course, hood coverage. She also believes metal details play a crucial role, noting that “layering in unique hardware and metal finishes can elevate a design.” Today’s most eye-catching ranges are highly customizable down to the knobs, doors, and handles. These small but impactful elements also give a stove its personality. Whether it’s swapping in colorful knobs, selecting strapping in a contrasting finish, or choosing a different material for the door pulls, these components turn an appliance into a focal point.

Of course, all that customization can come at a premium. Statement stoves often start in the low five figures and climb depending on features, finishes, and fuel configurations—but for many homeowners, this tailor-made centerpiece is worth the investment. The vast color possibilities are front and center in this trend, and brands are delivering. BlueStar, which offers over one thousand colors, has seen a significant uptick in earthy, saturated colors like wine red and deep burgundy,

along with bold greens, blues, and even shades of yellow and gray. “Matte black and white used to be the go-to,” says Shae Wilder, BlueStar’s manager of designer relations, “but more and more, clients are looking for a unique space that fits their personal style and taste.” However, neutral tones can also become noteworthy with the right elements. According to Moraes, “surprisingly, pure white with polished nickel or brass accents has become a favorite for a modern yet timeless statement,” says Moraes. But overall, jewel tones and soft neutrals in matte finishes with burnished brass trims are still reigning supreme. He’s also seeing more homeowners utilize their paint-to-sample program, requesting custom color-matching to

cabinetry or other design elements, down to the exact shade—making a case for a statement stove that doesn’t necessarily scream for attention but commands it anyway. Still, no matter how striking the stove is, it can’t carry the entire kitchen. According to Rideau, the trick is balance. “While the statement stove serves as the jewel piece, it’s essential that the surrounding elements act as supportive backup entertainers,” she explains. In other words, don’t make the stove compete with the rest of your kitchen. It should be the main focus while everything else complements it. Matte finishes can help soften the look–even with bold color choices. “A matte finish provides a softness suitable for large appliances, such as a range, hood,

or refrigerator,” says Wilder.

Layering in unique hardware and metal finishes can elevate a design.

Performance Still Matters—a Lot

Some may see a bold statement stove and assume that it’s all form and no function. But according to the experts, that couldn’t be further from the truth. “Today’s homeowners crave a harmony of beauty and power,” says Reese Barrett, the COO of Art Culinaire, which is the sole distributor of Lacanche ranges in the U.S. “A balance where timeless design meets culinary precision.”

Brands are responding with serious innovation. BlueStar’s Platinum Series Induction Ranges are a direct response to shifting regulations and design sensibilities, offering clean lines, bold color, and a matte cooktop surface that’s less reflective and resistant to scratches, stains, and crucially, fingerprints. Meanwhile, L’Atelier Paris is answering clients’ calls for fully personalized cooking elements, like single induction burners mixed with traditional gas and convection in all modes. Allowing for “unprecedented personalization in both look and functionality,” says Moraes. “Aesthetics and performance work hand in hand, especially for high-end appliance brands that offer both,” Wilder agrees.

“There’s no need to prioritize one over the other.” So, yes, today’s stoves are dressed to impress, but they’re also expected to perform like pros.

The Top Brands Behind the Look

When it comes to dream-worthy kitchen ranges, the usual European suspects— including La Cornue and Aga—still hold iconic status. Lacanche, which offers a selection of 29 organic shades of porcelain enamel, is known as one of the first to offer such a diverse color palette. “European brands have long been recognized as leaders in color variety and specialized hardware for stoves,” says Rideau. “They’ve set the standard for quality and design that many aspire to achieve.”

“French-crafted ranges like Lacanche embody heirloom quality, complemented with generations of craftsmanship, and every detail tells a story. It’s no wonder they inspire devotion,” echoes Barrett. Italian brands Bertazzoni and Ilve are also top contenders for statement ranges. But American brands such as BlueStar and Big Chill are rising fast. “BlueStar has established itself as a leader in the industry,” notes Rideau, “they are innovating and bringing exceptional craftsmanship to the forefront.”

At L’Atelier Paris, the push for excellence isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s also about access. “We’ve recently opened our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Georgia,” says Moraes. This move not only shortens lead times (yes, please!) but also makes their ranges the only fully custom, handcrafted products of their kind manufactured in the United States.

The Verdict? Statement Stoves Are Hot

Whether you’re in it for the performance, the personality, or the punch of color, one thing is clear: the modern range is no longer an afterthought. With options that marry culinary muscle and visual drama, it’s the appliance that sets the tone for the entire kitchen. “A range is the perfect canvas for expressing personal style,” Rideau says. That canvas just happens to come in 1,000+ colors, a range of metallic trims, and pro-level performance now.

RIGHT WAYS TO FALL TO MINIMIZE INJURIES

Falling Techniques to Minimize Hand Injuries

Falls can cause various injuries, including hand and wrist injuries such as fractures or sprains. Here are some techniques to help minimize hand injuries when falling:

FNH - HEALTH & MEDICAL TOURSM

1. Protect your head

• The most important part of your body to protect during a fall is your head.

• Tuck your chin into your chest to protect your head from hitting the ground.

• If you're falling face-first, turn your head to the side.

• You can also bring your arms up to head level to provide additional protection for your head.

2. Land on fleshy areas

• Try to land on your side or buttocks, as these areas have more cushioning and are less likely to sustain a serious injury.

• Avoid landing directly on your hand or wrist, as this can cause a fracture or sprain.

3. Keep limbs bent

• It's natural to try and catch yourself with outstretched arms, but this can actually increase the risk of injury.

• Instead, try to keep your arms and legs slightly bent to absorb the impact of the fall.

4. Relax your body

• Tensing up during a fall can make injuries worse.

• Try to exhale and relax as you fall, which will help to spread the impact across a larger area of your body.

5. Roll out of the impact

• If you are able, rolling with the fall can help dissipate the force of the impact.

• Practicing rolls in a safe environment, such as a gym with padded mats, can be beneficial.

6. If falling forward

• Hit the ground with the entire palm and forearm to reduce the likelihood of a wrist fracture.

• Turn your head to the side to avoid hitting your face on the ground.

• Try to land in a push-up position, using your palms and forearms to support your weight, without letting the rest of your body touch the ground.

7. After a fall

• Stay calm and assess your condition before attempting to get up.

• If you are hurt or cannot get up on your own, seek assistance or call for help.

• Talk to your doctor about the fall, even if you don't think you are seriously hurt.

Remember, prevention is key. Taking steps to prevent falls in the first place, such as wearing appropriate footwear, being aware of your surroundings, and doing exercises to improve balance and strength, is important.

TIPS TO PREVENT FALLS IN THE SUMMERTIME:

Falls commonly cause hand and wrist injuries resulting in a hand fracture, wrist popping, or a fall on an outstretched hand. Certain preventive measures can help reduce the risk of falls during the summer season. One of the foremost things to consider is wearing appropriate footwear. Choosing shoes with good grip and support can help prevent slips and falls. For those requiring assistance, mobility aids such as crutches or walkers can also help prevent falls. Keeping hydrated is crucial to maintaining physical stability; drinking enough water throughout a hot summer day is paramount. Additionally, avoiding rush and sun glare can help reduce the risk of falls.

How To Fall to Prevent Injuries

Falling can happen to anyone at any age. However, the way you fall can determine the extent of your injuries. To prevent a hand fracture, wrist popping, or a broken or sprained wrist from a fall on an outstretched hand, there are certain precautions you can take. First, try to relax and aim to fall on your side or buttocks rather than your hand or wrist. This will help to distribute the impact of the fall all over your body rather than concentrating it on one area. Second, protect your head by tucking your chin into your chest and turning your head to the side. This will protect your head from hitting the ground. Third, try to use your arms to cushion the fall by instinctively reaching out to break your fall. This can cause a hyperextended wrist, but it is still better than a broken wrist. Landing on your hand or wrist may cause a hand fracture or a sprained wrist. You can differentiate between a sprained wrist and a broken wrist by looking for symptoms such as swelling, tenderness, bruising, and an inability to move the wrist. Following these steps can minimize the risk of injury from a fall and potentially prevent hand fractures, wrist popping, or a broken or sprained wrist. Remember to always be cautious and aware of your surroundings, especially when walking on slippery surfaces or uneven terrain.

What To Do if a Fall Results in a Hand or Wrist Injury

If a fall injures your hand or wrist, it is important to know how to identify the signs of a possible sprained wrist or broken wrist.

Sprained Wrist

A sprained wrist refers to an injury to the ligaments that connect the bones in the wrist. These ligaments can stretch or tear, usually due to sudden twisting or bending of the wrist. The symptoms of a sprained wrist can include:

• Pain

• Swelling

• Stiffness

• Bruise on the skin around the wrist

Generally, a sprained wrist will heal independently with rest and proper care.

Broken Wrist

A broken wrist refers to a fracture in one or more of the bones in the wrist. The bones in the wrist can break in various ways, such as a clean break or a crack. The symptoms of a broken wrist can include:

• Pain

• Swelling

• Bruising

• Deformity of the wrist or hand

A broken wrist often requires medical attention, such as casting or surgery. If you suspect a wrist injury, it is important to seek medical attention to determine the appropriate treatment and prevent complications.

These drinks are known to kick start the metabolism, reduce bloating and support effective fat loss. Do remember to hydrate with plain water through the day and eat clean, seasonal food.

Simple inclusions to start and instantly feel lighter, energetic and fitter.

CCF Tea: Cumin, coriander and fennel seeds pack a punch when it comes to improving digestion, reducing bloating, improving energy and flushing out toxins from the body. Once cooled, sip a cup or 2 through the day.

Cinnamon Tea: Cinnamon is a spice known to regulate blood sugar levels and thereby balance food craving. Add a pinch of cinnamon powder or cayenne powder to water. You can boil this

and make a comforting tea. This helps improve the metabolism and digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes.

Apple Cider Vinegar Drink:

An acetic acid, which helps improve insulin sensitivity, gut health, and boost metabolism, the ideal time to have Apple Cider Vinegar would be before your meals. Add one tablespoon of ACV with warm water 30 mins before meals can support fat loss. You can also add 1tsp Psyllium husk.

On the economic side of obesity impact, according to online forum Global Obesity Observatory, the economic impact of obesity in India in 2019 was estimated to be $28.95 billion (Rs 2.4 lakh crore), equivalent to around Rs 1,800 per capita and 1.02% of GDP. By 2030, that is projected to grow to $81.53 billion (Rs 6.7 lakh crore, based on current exchange rate). This would work out to Rs 4,700 per capita, or 1.57% of GDP. In another 30 years, i.e. 2060, unchecked obesity could see the figure burgeon to $838.6. billion (Rs 69.6 lakh crore). This will mark a per capita drain of Rs 44,200, which is 2.5% of GDP, says the report. The repercussions of obesity extend beyond treatment costs, loss of livelihood, opportunity costs, and emotional toll due to lack of societal support also contribute significantly to this economic burden.

THE WILD WORLD OF EXTREME SPORTS

CHASING THE ULTIMATE THRILL

Imagine you’re standing on the edge of a cliff, heart pounding like a drum, the wind whipping through your hair, and a 300-foot drop staring you in the face. Or maybe you’re carving through a monster wave, the ocean roaring in your ears, knowing one wrong move could send

you tumbling. This is the electrifying realm of extreme sports—a playground for adrenaline junkies, risk-takers, and those who laugh in the face of “normal.” Buckle up, because we’re diving into the heart-pumping, jaw-dropping universe of extreme sports, where the stakes are high, and the rewards are even higher.

What Are Extreme Sports, Anyway? Extreme sports are activities that push the boundaries of human capability, often flirting with danger and defying gravity, logic, or both. Think skydiving, base jumping, big-wave surfing, freeride mountain biking, or wingsuit flying.

These aren’t your average weekend jogs—they demand skill, guts, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. What sets them apart? The rush. The kind of rush that makes your palms sweat, your pulse race, and your soul scream, “I’m alive!”

Unlike traditional sports, extreme sports often lack rigid rules or stadiums. The playing field is the wild—rugged mountains, raging rivers, or open skies. They’re less about competition and more about personal conquest, though plenty of athletes still chase records or pull off stunts that leave jaws on the floor.

Why Do People Do This?

Let’s be real: to the average person, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane or skiing down a near-vertical slope sounds like a death wish. So why do it? For starters, it’s about the adrenaline—a chemical high that floods your system when you’re teetering on the edge of danger. Science backs this up: adrenaline spikes trigger a flood of endorphins, creating a natural euphoria that’s addictive as hell. But it’s not just about the buzz.

For many, extreme sports are a rebellion against the mundane. In a world of cubicles and commutes, scaling a sheer rock face or riding a 50-foot wave feels like flipping the bird to routine. It’s a way to test limits, conquer fears, and prove you’re capable of more than you ever imagined. Plus, there’s a tight-knit community of thrillseekers who share the passion, swapping stories of near-misses and epic triumphs like badges of honour.

The Heavy Hitters of Extreme Sports

Let’s run through some of the most pulsepounding extreme sports lighting up the scene today:

• Skydiving: You leap from a plane at 15,000 feet, freefalling at 120 mph before your parachute (hopefully) opens. It’s the ultimate gut-check, blending terror with pure freedom.

• Base Jumping: Like skydiving’s crazier cousin, this involves leaping from fixed structures—buildings, antennas, bridges, or cliffs—with just a parachute and a prayer. The margin for error? Razor-thin.

• Big-Wave Surfing: Paddling into waves the size of buildings takes skill, timing, and nerves of steel. Surfers like Laird Hamilton have made this a high-stakes art form.

• Freeride Mountain Biking: Think hurtling down a mountain on a bike, dodging rocks and launching off jumps. It’s controlled chaos, requiring laser focus and lightning reflexes.

• Wingsuit Flying: Strap on a suit that turns you into a human glider and

soar through canyons or off cliffs. It’s as close to flying like a bird as humans get—until gravity reminds you who’s boss.

• Ice Climbing: Scaling frozen waterfalls or glacial walls with ice axes and crampons. One slip, and it’s game over. Precision and strength are non-negotiable.

• These are just a taste. From kiteboarding to cave diving, the world of extreme sports is as diverse as it is daring.

The Risks (Yeah, They’re Real)

Extreme sports can be dangerous. Really dangerous. A 2023 study estimated that activities like base jumping have a fatality rate of about 1 in 2,300 jumps. Compare that to driving a car, and it’s clear you’re rolling the dice. Avalanches, wipeouts, equipment failures, or just plain bad luck can turn an epic day into a tragedy. Even the pros aren’t immune— legends like climber Alex Honnold and surfer Bethany Hamilton have had close calls that remind us nature doesn’t play favourites. But here’s the thing: most athletes aren’t reckless. They train relentlessly, study conditions, and use top-tier gear. Risk management is part of the game—knowing when to push and when to walk away. For every heart-stopping stunt, there’s hours of prep behind it. Still, the unpredictability

is part of the allure. As climber Dean Potter once said, “The edge is where I feel most alive.”

The Culture and the Future

Extreme sports aren’t just about the act— they’re a lifestyle. The community is a mix of rebels, dreamers, and innovators, bound by a shared love for pushing limits. Events like the X Games and Red Bull Rampage showcase jawdropping talent, while social media lets athletes share their stunts with the world, inspiring newbies to strap on a helmet and join the fray. Technology is changing the game, too. Drones capture angles that make your stomach drop just watching. Advanced gear— lighter helmets, tougher ropes, smarter parachutes—makes the impossible a little more possible. And virtual reality

is letting wannabe thrill-seekers test the waters without, you know, actually plummeting to their doom. Looking ahead, extreme sports are only getting bigger. The global market for adventure sports was valued at over $300 billion in 2024, and it’s growing fast. New sports are popping up, too—think drone racing or urban freerunning. As more people crave experiences over possessions, the call of the wild is louder than ever.

How to Get Started

Feeling the itch to try something extreme? You don’t have to leap off a cliff on day one. Start small: • Find Your Jam: Pick a sport that sparks your interest. Love water? Try whitewater kayaking. Heights your thing? Look into rock climbing.

• Train Smart: Take lessons from pros and build skills gradually. Most sports have beginner-friendly versions—like indoor climbing walls or tandem skydives.

• Gear Up: Invest in quality equipment and learn how to use it. A bad parachute or a flimsy harness isn’t where you want to cut corners.

• Join the Crew: Connect with local clubs or online communities. They’ll show you the ropes (literally) and keep you safe.

• Respect the Risk: Know your limits and the environment. Mother Nature doesn’t care how brave you feel.

The Final Rush

Extreme sports aren’t just about cheating death—they’re about embracing life. They strip away the noise of the everyday and force you to focus on the moment. Whether it’s the silence of a freefall, the roar of a wave, or the burn in your muscles as you summit a peak, these sports remind us what it means to be human: bold, fragile, and endlessly curious. So, what’s it gonna be? Will you watch from the sidelines, or will you take the plunge? The edge is calling—go find your thrill.

Rising 3,776 meters, its graceful cone has inspired poets, painters, pilgrims, and travelers for centuries. Watching the sun rise from its summit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, often described as magical. Mt Fuji is more than just a scenic wonder; it holds deep spiritual significance. HIROSHIMA

BEST FOR INTROSPECTION

Modern-day Hiroshima is a vibrant, green city with wide, tree-lined boulevards and a warm, welcoming spirit. But beneath its forward-looking energy lies a powerful story—one that becomes deeply personal when visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Here, the devastation of the atomic bomb is presented with honesty and gravity, offering a sobering yet essential lesson in history. Surrounding the museum is Peace Memorial Park, a calm and contemplative space designed by renowned architect Tange Kenzō. With monuments, memorials, and quiet walking paths, the park invites visitors to reflect on the past while appreciating the city’s powerful message of peace and renewal.

Despite its tragic history, Hiroshima is anything but somber. The city has rebuilt with remarkable

resilience, and its people embody a spirit of hope. You’ll find plenty to enjoy— especially the food. Hiroshima is famous for its okonomiyaki, a delicious savory pancake layered with noodles, seafood, and vegetables, grilled to perfection.

Planning Tip: If you’re looking for a unique day trip, head to Ōkunoshima, affectionately known as Rabbit Island. Just a short train and ferry ride from Hiroshima, the island is home to hundreds of friendly, free-roaming rabbits and offers a quirky, joyful contrast to the solemnity of the Peace Park. Hiroshima moves visitors in quiet, profound ways. It’s a city that confronts the past while embracing the future— reminding us of the resilience of humanity and the enduring importance of peace.

YAKUSHIMA

BEST FOR FOREST BATHING

Off the southern coast of Kyūshū lies Yakushima, a lush island that feels like something out of a dream. With its misty mountains, moss-covered trails, and towering ancient trees, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is often described as magical, enchanting, and otherworldly—for good reason. Yakushima is home to some of Japan’s last remaining primeval forests, where yakusugi—ancient Japanese cedars, some over 1,000 years old—dominate the landscape. Their massive roots twist like tentacles across the forest floor, creating

an atmosphere that’s both mystical and humbling. Hiking here means walking beneath giants, across mossy rocks, through terrain that constantly shifts between sunlight and shadow. The island’s ethereal beauty famously inspired Studio Ghibli’s beloved animated film Princess Mononoke, and it’s easy to see why. Every step through the forest feels like entering a fairytale, with nature at its rawest and most majestic.

Planning Tip: After your forest adventures, make a stop at the Yakusugi

Museum to learn more about the cultural and ecological importance of these ancient trees. The museum offers exhibits in English via audio guide, giving deeper insight into the islanders’ connection to the yakusugi. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply seeking a deep connection with nature, Yakushima offers a rare opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience the rejuvenating power of forest bathing. It’s not just a destination—it’s a return to the wild, sacred heart of Japan.

KOYA-SAN

BEST FOR EXPLORING TEMPLES

Journeying to Kōya-san (Mount Kōya) feels like entering a different realm. A scenic ride up via funicular brings you to this remote and sacred mountain plateau, home to one of Japan’s most important Buddhist monastic complexes. With over a hundred temples nestled among misty forests, Kōya-san is a place of deep spirituality and timeless tranquility. The highlight for many is Oku-no-in, a revered cemetery and pilgrimage site where moss-covered stone stupas lie beneath towering cryptomeria trees. As you walk the quiet, winding paths, you’ll pass centuries of history and devotion, surrounded by an atmosphere of profound peace. Kōyasan also offers a unique opportunity to stay overnight in a temple. Known as shukubō, these temple lodgings provide guests with a rare glimpse into monastic life. You’ll sleep on tatami mats, dine on shōjin ryōri—a beautifully presented, vegetarian Buddhist cuisine—and join morning meditation or chanting sessions with resident monks. It’s a deeply calming and reflective experience.

Planning Tip: While there is no strict dress code at Japanese temples, it’s important to remain respectful. Keep your voice low, avoid

disruptive behavior, and dress modestly when visiting sacred spaces. Kōya-san is more than a destination—it’s an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and reflect. Whether you’re exploring ancient graveyards or meditating at dawn, this spiritual mountain retreat offers a meaningful escape from the everyday.

OKINAWA & THE SOUTHWEST ISLANDS

FOR BEACHES

Far removed from Japan’s bustling cities and snow-capped peaks, Okinawa and the Southwest Islands offer a laid-back, sun-soaked escape. This semi-tropical archipelago stretches between Kyūshū and Taiwan, boasting a unique culture, warm climate, and some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Historically, the region was home to the Ryūkyū Kingdom, only annexed by Japan in the 19th century. The islanders’ distinct cultural identity lives on in their traditional music, architecture, and cuisine. From coral-walled houses to dishes like goya champuru and Okinawa soba, everything here feels

different—and refreshingly so. The main draw, however, is the natural beauty. Okinawa’s beaches are unrivaled in Japan, with powdery white sand, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. The Yaeyama and Kerama Islands are especially known for their postcard-perfect coastlines and abundant marine life. Whether you’re lounging under the sun or diving into vibrant coral reefs, the islands offer endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure. Snorkeling and scuba diving reveal a world of tropical fish, sea turtles, and stunning underwater landscapes.

Planning Tip: While Okinawa is accessible year-round, spring and autumn offer the best weather. Avoid the typhoon season (typically August and September) for calmer seas and clearer skies. Okinawa and its surrounding islands are where Japan truly unwinds—inviting you to slow down, soak up the sun, and explore a side of the country that feels like a world apart.

OSAKA

BEST FOR STREET FOOD & NIGHTLIFE

While Tokyo often dominates the conversation about urban experiences in Japan, Osaka confidently holds its own. As the country’s third-largest city, Osaka is widely celebrated for its vibrant street food scene and electric nightlife. It’s a place where eating is more than a necessity—it’s a way of life. The city’s unofficial motto, kuidaore, translates to “eat until you drop,” and nowhere is this more evident than in its bustling neighborhoods filled with food stalls and local eateries. Don’t leave without trying Osaka’s most

iconic dish: takoyaki—crispy-on-theoutside, gooey-on-the-inside balls of batter stuffed with bits of octopus. These savory snacks are cooked on griddles and served piping hot with sweet sauce, mayo, and bonito flakes. You’ll find them sold everywhere, from street vendors to specialty restaurants. As night falls, Osaka transforms into a neon-lit wonderland. The Dōtombori area, located along a lively canal, is the heart of the action. Here, flashing LED billboards, animated signage, and massive video screens light up the

streets, creating one of Japan’s most dazzling nightscapes. The energy is infectious—this is where locals and visitors come together to eat, drink, shop, and soak in the atmosphere. Beyond its culinary fame and nightlife, Osaka is also Japan’s oldest merchant city, known for its entrepreneurial spirit and warm, down-to-earth people. Planning tip: Be aware that most hotels in Osaka charge an accommodation tax in addition to nightly rates. The amount varies based on the room’s price per night.

KAMIKOCHI

BEST FOR MOUNTAIN HIKES

Nestled in the heart of the Northern Japan Alps, Kamikōchi is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes—a pristine highland river valley surrounded by towering peaks and serene forests. This alpine jewel, sitting at an elevation of about 1500 meters (4920 feet), offers an unforgettable retreat into the wild, far from the bustle of Japan’s cities. Kamikōchi’s flat valley floor makes it ideal for easy day hikes. The scenic trail along the crystalclear Azusa-gawa River is perfect for beginners and nature lovers alike, winding through forests of willow, larch, and elm. The atmosphere is tranquil, the air refreshingly crisp, and the views of surrounding snow-capped mountains—such as the majestic Hotaka Range—are nothing short of spectacular. For more seasoned hikers and mountaineers, Kamikōchi is a

gateway to high alpine adventures. It is the starting point for demanding ascents of peaks like Yari-ga-take, one of Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountains at 3180 meters (10,433 feet). Known as the birthplace of Japanese alpinism, Kamikōchi continues to attract climbers and explorers from around the world. Adding to its charm is the area’s commitment to conservation. Private vehicles are banned, helping to preserve the peaceful environment and reduce the ecological footprint of visitors. Access is via shuttle buses or taxis from nearby towns, ensuring that the valley retains its unspoiled allure. Planning tip: Kamikōchi is open from mid-April to mid-November. Dress in layers and check trail conditions, especially if planning a high-altitude trek.
