SHIKOKU ISLAND | 14 to 19 April 2026

This April, we are organising a 6-day mission trip to Japan with a difference. Beyond the immaculate work ethic and their famous cuisine, are there unseen needs we have never realised?.

Prayerfully as we walk and fellowship with local pastors and missionaries, the Lord will grant us a different view of Japan.

WHY JAPAN?

Despite a population of 126 million, Japan remains largely unreached, with Christians making up less than 1%. The spiritual need is stark: 1,700 towns have no local church, and existing congregations average of 35 members or less.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

WHY VISION WALK?

A vision walk is a firsthand look at God’s work in the global marketplace and learn to align your personal and professional life with His mission.

Journeying from Matsuyama to Kochi, we will engage in daily walks of an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon, distributing tracts and praying for that area. We will visit 5 to 7 churches to hear from their local pastors and then end the trip at Grace Kochi Church on Sunday where Mei Lin is currently serving.

Estimated cost S$1,200 (not inclusive of airfare)

Limited seats! Contact Mei Lin or Hock Tiong

SHIKOKU VISION WALK

Dates:

• 14 to 19 April 2026 Tuesday to Sunday, 6D/5N

Jon Benedict

Missionary & Guide

• Jon was born 1956 in Japan to missionary parents and grew up in Japan, going to Japanese and international schools. He accepted Christ as a child and was baptized when 17 sensing God was calling him to commit his life to Christ. After graduating Yokohama International High School he went to Youth With A Mission schools in Hawaii and then returned to Japan in 1978 to serve as missionary with YWAM where he served on staff as interpreter and leader for 20 years.

• In 1979 Jon married Becky Swanson, who also grew up in Japan as a child of missionaries, and they have 10 children who were born and raised in Japan. Jon had a desire to study theology and attended Christian International College by correspondence earning his Th.B. in 1984.

• While serving as a missionary, Jon taught English and American culture in schools ranging from elementary schools to colleges for over 40 years and worked as a wedding minister for 36 years.

• Currently, Jon and Becky live in Nagano prefecture where Jon helps to fill in preaching at a small country church, has an interpreting job, and grows rice on the side. Jon’s passion is to know Christ, to grow in faith, and to share the gospel with those who have yet to hear the message personally.

• Jon has always been interested in the history of Japan, in particular the historical highways of Japan near which he grew up. Beginning in 2009, Jon, along with Pastor Masao Himei, head  of Sodoin Dendo (a mission organization) and other believers, took a month to walk the 500 km of Tokaido, the most famous of the historic highways in Japan linking Tokyo with the ancient capital Kyoto, to share the gospel and to visit churches along the way.

• This project was called Walk With Jesus and has continued for the past 16 years. Currently, Walk With Jesus is follows the route of the old highways on the Island of Shikoku.

• Jon’s desire is to unite with local churches across denominations, to reach people with the gospel, and to pray for more laborers into the harvest.

PASTORAL ADVISORY

Dear brothers and sisters,

As a church family, we are called to be a compassionate community— always ready to lend a helping hand and to express the love of Christ through practical acts of care. This is a vital part of our Christian witness.

At the same time, as we seek to love generously, we are also called to act wisely. This is especially pertinent today as scamming activities continue to increase in frequency and sophistication. Scammers prey on potential victims’ fear and kindness. Hence, it is necessary for us to be vigilant and cautious when we are personally approached to render financial assistance to anyone.

In Foochow Methodist Church, we have a Social Concern Fund that has been set up to provide assistance to members facing genuine financial needs. Anyone requiring help is encouraged to speak with our pastors or leaders so that appropriate support may be extended through the Social Concern Fund, on a case-by-case basis. We wish to stress that there is no shame in asking for help because helping one another is what families do.

If you are being approached for financial assistance in the church, we encourage you to share the situation with our pastors or church leaders, or direct the person to them, so that they can assess the needs and consider how the church may provide appropriate help.

This process protects both the donor and the recipient, strengthens accountability, and allows our whole community to participate in prayerful, meaningful support for persons in financial distress.

May the world continue to recognise us as Christians who love deeply and live wisely.

ReceiptIssuance

As part of the efforts to go Green, except for "Sunday offerings", e-receipts would be sent to your email or mobile phone registered with our church unless otherwise advised. No receipt would be issued for offerings indicated as "Sunday offerings" or collections that have no specific indication.

e-Receipts will be sent to you via the Church WhatsApp number. We assure members that such e-receipts are NOT sent as broadcast messages to the whole church.

Discussion Questions

1) Carry your weight – Grow in maturity

Where might you be tempted to “consume” rather than “contribute” in church in your current season?

2) Show the way – Glow by example

What is one area where you want to “show the way” to others (faithfulness, work ethic, purity, speech, serving, prayer, evangelism)?

3) Keep doing good – Go with purpose

In what ways can our unity and the contribution of every member in the church family strengthen our witness to non-believers?
