Newsletter February 2022 Guadalupe Musalem Fund meeting with mentors.
On February 24, the Guadalupe Musalem Fund held the first meeting of mentors of 2022, in order to learn about the progress they have made with their scholarship grantees in terms of communication and the support they have provided for their empowerment. Martha Aparicio Rojas thanked them for their assistance and informed them that as of January she is the president of the Board of Directors of the FGM. She provided information on the fundraising campaign and invited them to join this effort as they do every year. She also invited the mentors of grantees who are about to graduate from high school to encourage them to continue their studies, since information on the FGM university scholarships will be available soon. At one point, one of the mentors, Gisela Blas, shared the following: “It is very exciting to see how my grantee has more confidence, it is interesting to see how they mature, how they grow, what the Fund does is wonderful, the way in which she expresses herself is different, her vocabulary is different. All the training they receive gives them tools to advance.” The following mentors participated on line: Daniela Esteva, Consuelo and Rosalba Bustamante, Ana Lina Martínez, Elsa Blancas, Rosa Elena Figueroa, Marlen Martínez, Olga Grijalva, Eva Velásquez, Anis Ballina, Gayne Rodríguez and María José Soruco, first time mentor, was welcomed.

Newsletter February 2022 The right to live a life free from violence and communication for peace.
The comprehensive scholarship granted by the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, allows the young scholarship recipients to receive reinforcement on important issues such as human rights and feminism. for this reason Aline Castellanos Jurado was invited to give them a talk on “the right to live a life free of violence and on communication for peace”. Aline, a feminist activist and researcher, began the session by asking: What is the word for peace in your native languages? The students answered in their Mixe, Triqui and Mixteco languages. The specialist explained that, for women living a life free from violence and in peace, it depends on the their access to rights such as health, education, and housing. “Are these rights ensured in your communities?”, she questioned and listened attentively to the answers of the young women from different communities in Oaxaca”. Luz María, originally from Mixteca, shared: “The facilitator made me realize that women have rights and deserve a life free of violence achieved through collective peace and eliminating all kinds of macho ways of thinking through peaceful discussion”. The grantees pondered the challenges they must face to achieve a culture of peace, they also recognized the women of their communities who have contributed to wellbeing. Newsletter February 2022 Academic Reinforcement.
On February 12, multidisciplinary training sessions were held in which the young high school scholarship recipients participated. From 9:00 am to 11:00 in the morning, they worked on academic reinforcement, beginning: “Operations with fractions, ratios, proportions, percentages and classification of numbers”, “Factorization, linear equations (one and two unknowns) and quadratic equations”, as well as “Distance, area, midpoint and trigonometry”. They also reinforced the subject of “Mathematical Logical Thought” and, in a personalized way, addressed their questions on physics, chemistry and mathematics. “This academic support can help me in my math class, since today we examined fractions and also the area of triangles, and well, all of this helps me further expand my knowledge”, said Mariel originally from Mixteca.

Newsletter February 2022 Magic Circle.
In order to practice active communication, listening and reinforcement among fellows, the Magic Circle session was held. In charge of this activity were the psychologists Lina Herrera and Luz Elena Moctezuma. The subject was “When I felt good about myself despite the fact that society judged or criticized me”. Luz Elena reminded the young women of the rules for participating if they so decide, listening actively, not interrupting, etc. “Sometimes we do things that some people may not think are right, but I believe that as long as what you do does not threaten your life or personal integrity, as well as your dignity, what other people think should not affect you, you should learn to how to react to certain situations,” said Valeria, from the Sierra Sur. The students shared their experiences and discussed the lessons learned from this session.

Newsletter February 2022 Let’s créate Community.
When they become a part of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, the young beneficiaries make a commitment to carry out activities in favor of their communities; and although for now it has not been possible to carry out their workshops, talks, film screenings, etc., due to current restrictions on group activities, the Education and Follow-up area continues to provide tools to the scholarship recipients. In “Let’s create community”, they work on their ideas, analyze the challenges, identify their allies, share their experiences, etc. During the February session, they carried out an activity in small groups in which they presented the projects they will develop and gave each other feedback. “I found out about the different projects my colleagues are carrying out, in addition to being able to talk about mine and the valuable recommendations my colleagues gave me, it also helped me not to be afraid to speak, ina safe environment,” said Karina originally from Sierra Norte.

High school grantee
Hello, my name is Diana, I am originally from the Valles Centrales region, my family is made up of my mother and my little sister. I am currently in the sixth semester of high school and I am studying mathematical physics in which we are taught subjects such as calculus, mathematics , physics, probability, statistics, etc. Being a scholarship recipient of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund completely changed my life. During these three years I have acquired a lot of important academic, personal and social knowledge. I learned about the value we have as women. The subjects that have enriched me are: Identifying romantic love, women’s rights, sexual rights, human rights of adolescent women, history of feminist movements, inclusive language and non-sexist language, psychological support and many more. I have felt very happy to know that thanks to my academic and personal efforts I was able to obtain a scholarship that supports my education and my dream. It has been an experience full of challenges but also many beautiful moments with my fellow scholarship recipients and with all the people who are part of the Fund and who make our dream of continuing our studies possible.

Newsletter Testimony February 2022 I found out about the scholarship program through one of my aunts and it was there when I began to prepare all I needed to be elegible to be granted one. The reasons I had for requesting it were that my mother is a single mother and my little sister has a motor disability. My mother is our sole support. That’s why it was difficult to continue with my studies. My goal is to study a career as an aviator pilot and one day I would like to become a great pilot and be able to help my family and many people. The FGM fulfilled much more than my expectations, because at first I thought it was just financial support for women who wanted to study, but after a while I realized that the Fund becomes our second family. They support us in many ways: when we are sick, when we feel bad emotionally, when we do poorly in a subject at school, they try to make sure that we lack nothing. When we used attend the workshops each month, they gave us food to support our families, in addition to financial support. My family believes that the training provided by the Fund is very important for my development as a person, in addition to the fact that the information they provide us is very valuable for young people, when I learn something new I share it with my family so that they also know about of that subject. Through the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, I have carried out activities in favor of my community, such as a workshop on teenage pregnancy and on garbage collection. I am currently working on a project on family planning, which aims to stress the importance of planning a family as a responsible couple, of making that decision to improve one´s lifestyle. Through this message I want to thank the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, for offering me Gisela as a mentor. It has been a very nice experience because she supports me in many ways. On behalf of my family I thank you very much for supporting my education . At the same time, I thank you all for joining this effort and supporting the education of young women from indigenous communities, By supporting a young scholar you support a family and even benefit a community. Giving a hand always makes you great!

Hello, I am Olga Cabrera Oropeza, a cook from the Oaxacan Mixteca and I am very proud to be part of this network of donors of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund, since 2015. It fills me with satisfaction to know that it is in our hands to give back a little of what life has given us. Knowing that it is possible to help young scholarship recipients takes me back to the times when as a woman it was difficult for me to attend high school, even more so, college.
