In order to continue contributing to the education of young women from indigenous, rural, and Afro-Mexican communities in Oaxaca, the Guadalupe Musalem Fund announces the Call for Scholarships 2022. The scholarship provides multidisciplinary support in emotional health, human rights, feminism, academic studies, acompaniment by a tutor, and financial support of two thousand pesos a month, among others. The young women who are selected will receive the grant during the 2022-2023 school year, with the possibility of continuing to receive it during the three years of high school studies, as well as support in starting university studies, if they comply with the requirements Participants may submit their application only by email from March 15 to May 31, following the instructions in the application form and manual found at www.fondoguadalupemusalem.org. The results will be announced on June 27, 2022. The Guadalupe Musalem Fund encourages young Oaxacan women under the age of 20 who have finished or are about to finish junior high school to participate in this selection process that will provide them with great opportunities in fulfillingl their goals. We also invite teachers to motivate and accompany their students in submitting their applications, while also requesting the general public and the media´s support in disseminating the information about the scholarship program. Newsletter March 2022 Magic Circle. Personal power.
On March 19, a meeting between graduates of the Guadalupe Musalem Fund took place. In this sesión, a “Magic Circle on Personal power” was generously imparted by the psychologist Luz Elena Moctezuma Torre. The purpose of this activity was to strengthen trust and communication among the young women, addressing the subject “The day I felt powerful when making a decision.” Each participant had the opportunity and the option to share her experience or not, learning that the challenges she hs faced have helped her discover her decisión-making power. In this regard, Concepción, who is a university scholarship grantee, commented: “The magic circle was a very enriching activity, since all the former scholarship recipients were able to interact and share experiences that make us empathize and understand the different contexts in which we develop, and we face each day. In this way we form a family bond and a safe space to be ourselves” Thus, the FGM continues to support young university scholarship recipients and graduates, offering a space for safe conversation and continued learning in various areas.

Newsletter March 2022 Conscious Breathing. Practice for daily life.
On March 30, the meeting of tutors was held, on this occasion we worked on the topic “Conscious Breathing. Practice for daily life”, which was generously given by mentor Doris Josefina Acevedo Porras. The objective of the activity was to learn through simple methods to discover moods and make breathing an ally. The mentors were able to identify techniques such as: ways of breathing with the left or right nostril, movements with the hands and the proper posture to perform conscious breathing exercises, which can be implemented in the future. The specialist provided information to improve oxygenation, detoxify the body, have energy during the day and enhance creativity. “Deep and deep breathing gives us awareness of our breathing, it also helps us to be calm,” said Doris.

On March 12, the young high school scholarship recipients participated in multidisciplinary training sessions. During the morning they worked on topics such as: “Ratios and proportions. Percentages and classification of numbers. Inequalities with real numbers. Numerical value. Root and powers. Laws of exponents. Solution of first degree equations. Geometry-lines and slopes. Betzabé from the Sierra Norte commented: “In these academic support sessions I receive tools that will be very useful for me to continue learning in a simpler way during this semester and in my university career”. They also got reinforcement in “Mathematical Logical Thinking” in which they carried out exercises to strengthen this ability. Finally, they cleared up doubts on specific subjects in chemistry, physics and mathematics, which are part of the curricula in their schools.

Newsletter March 2022 Political Participation of Women: Women, rights and life on earth.
In order to promote a dialogue with the fellows on women’s rights, Dr. Margarita Dalton Palomo generously gave a talk on “Women’s Political Participation: Women’s, rights and life on earth”. Previously, and within the framework of International Women’s Day, Dr. Dalton shared videos through Google Classroom: “Peoples” by Sara Curruchich, and Lila Downs, “Women empowered against climate change” made by the Interamerican Development Bank, and “Ecofeminism and the decolonization of women, nature and the future”, by Vandan Shiva. As a part of the exercise, the students commented on these materials.

The Magic Circle session, facilitated by the specialists Luz Elena Moctezuma and Lina Herrera, began with the question “As a woman, how do I prevent something being done that I don’t like to me or to someone else”. Luz Elena reminded them of the rules for participating which are: take a turn if you want to, listen carefully, be silent and do not criticize. The scholarship grantees who decided to share their experiences recalled situations they had experienced and made them feel empathy with other women, and highlighted discrimination, gender violence, judgments and stereotypes that exist in their communities of origin. “I found this session interesting and important because I realized that we should not be judged by our ideas or ways of dressing, and we should ignore negative comments”, said Belén.

In this session, the students addressed “Speaking in public”, which was facilitated by Evi Hernández Hernández, head of the Education and Academic Monitoring Area. The activity began with the reading of a tongue twister. The importance of practicing conscious breathing in a relaxed, deep, significant manner 3 to 5 times a day, was emphasized. “Conscious breathing eliminates toxins, strengthens your body and helps you project your voice and manage your emotions,” psychologist Evi shared. Laura, from Valles Centrales, commented: “The truth is that what I always like about “Let’s make a community” is that by listening to my colleagues I can identify strategies to implement, improve my planning and development of activities”. In addition, they learned that they can improve their skills by recording and listening to their participation, observing their postures, body language, tone of voice and bad habits in speaking.

High school grantee. “Thoughts on gender roles and stereotypes”, which she prepared for her Educational Guidance Service class.
My point of view on gender roles and stereotypes, mainly as a woman, makes me think about how women in my community continue to carry out activities that are believed to correspond to their gender role, for example: men must work to support the household, while women are responsible for keeping the house clean and looking after the children, something that takes place in most homes in my community. But what would happen if it were the other way around, if the woman worked and the man looked after the house? In reality nothing would happen, but machismo is still present in most people. Another thing that I have noticed in my community is the way in which fathers and mothers educate their children. They tell boys that they must learn to defend themselves, that men must not cry and that they must dress in a certain a way; but for women it is the opposite, if they defend themselves, play soccer, or another sport where they use force, society defines them as”tomboys”. This also happens when they see a woman in a group of men or if she does somenthing that according to them is not appropiate for a woman, whether it is shaking hands like a man does when greeting another, which most people consider inappropriate for a woman.

Newsletter Testimony March 2022 Now let’s talk about the stereotypes that society has instilled in us, from beauty standards to clothing that we consider fashionable. What I have seen in my community is that many adolescents today want to have the body or the face of, mainly, clothing and footwear, models. They follow trends according to what they think makes them look fashionable. In fact, sometimes I have heard comments like “Oh why do you wear those clothes or use that cell phone, that’s out of date”. All this has promoted important companies or everything we see on screens. In my community, most parents tell us that we should dress decently. In my case, I am told that women should not wear short or low-cut outfits. My opinion is that everyone has the right to dress as they feel comfortable.

Convocatoria Becas 2022. Podrán participar mujeres menores de 20 años de escasos recursos económicos que hayan terminado o estén terminando su secundaria, tengan el deseo de iniciar su bachillerato y vivan en comunidades rurales, indígenas o afromexicanas del estado de Oaxaca. Nota: El bachillerato deberá estudiarse en sus comunidades o poblaciones cercanas. Todos los requisitos son indispensables para que la solicitud sea aceptada:
Principales beneficios de la beca.
*Acta de nacimiento. *Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP). *Certificado de secundaria con promedio general de aprovechamiento de nueve. *En caso de estar cursando actualmente la secundaria, se deberán presentar las boletas de calificaciones de primer y segundo año, y constancia correspondiente al tercer año, acreditando un promedio general de 9 (nueve). *En caso de tener dificultad para obtener la constancia de tercer grado al momento de realizar su solicitud, se deberá presentar una carta compromiso firmada por la solicitante comprometiéndose a entregarla en la siguiente etapa del proceso de selección. *Dos cartas manuscritas de sus maestros y/o maestras en las que expliquen las cualidades de la aspirante, y los motivos por los cuales consideran que debería obtener la beca. Las cartas deben ser únicas, no pueden ser iguales para todas las aspirantes. *Constancia expedida por la autoridad de su comunidad, donde indique que pertenece a una familia de bajos recursos económicos (información que podrá ser verificada). *Carta de la madre, el padre o tutores de la solicitante, en la que manifiesten estar de acuerdo en apoyarle con todo lo necesario en caso de resultar beneficiada con la beca. *Carta escrita a mano, donde la interesada explique los motivos por los cuales solicita la beca y considera que debe ortorgársele. * Fotografía de la interesada (de la cintura para arriba). Nombrar el archivo con el nombre de la solicitante. *En caso de que la solicitante sea seleccionada, pasará a la siguiente etapa y asistirá a una entrevista en el día y la hora que se le indique. Se valora positivamente el hecho de que la aspirante hable una lengua indígena. Si realizó algún servicio comunitario debe presentar constancia firmada por las autoridades, organización o lugar que lo acredite. La beneficiada firmará un compromiso Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C.

*Un apoyo económico de $2,000.00 (DOS MIL PESOS 00/100 M.N.) mensuales por un año, con la posibilidad de renovarse durante los tres años de duración del bachillerato. *Participación en un proceso formativo. *Posibilidad de continuar con la beca para realizar estudios de educación superior (sujeto a disponibilidad de recursos y aprovechamiento escolar durante el bachillerato). *La beca se renovará siempre y cuando se mantenga el promedio mínimo de 9 en sus estudios de bachillerato, y cumplan con el compromiso firmado, incluyendo la asistencia mensual a la ciudad de Oaxaca para participar en las actividades de fortalecimiento educativo y desarrollo humano. La selección de las candidatas, así como las circunstancias no previstas por esta convocatoria, quedan a cargo del Consejo Directivo del Fondo Guadalupe Musalem A.C. y los resultados serán inapelables. La convocatoria estará abierta del 15 de marzo al 31 de mayo de 2022. Los resultados se darán a conocer el 27 de junio 2022; el apoyo económico se otorgará para el periodo escolar comprendido de agosto de 2022 a julio de 2023.
