Brothers & Sisters, It is an honor and a privilege to serve this great organization as your Grand Worthy President and Grand Madam President for the fraternal year. We want to thank everyone who helped us celebrate the installation at our International Convention and hope that this edition of Soar can share a bit of that experience with our wonderful Brothers and Sisters who couldn’t attend. This year, we want all of you to focus on bringing great new Brothers and Sisters into our Aeries and Auxiliaries. A week to
remember OVER THE SUMMER, Eagles united once again to raise money, celebrate another year of accomplishments, and have a lot of fun doing it as the 2016 Fraternal Order of Eagles International Convention took over Reno, Nevada's Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, July 16-21.
Tens of thousands of dollars were raised through daily 50/50 drawings, our DRC silent auction and various other contributions. We also awarded nearly $400,000 in grants to a variety of medical research facilities across the country and celebrated nightly inside the Summit Ballroom with a variety of great entertainment including Creedence Clearwater Revisited, "It Is What It Was: The Music of Elvis," Elvis tribute artist Rob Ely and comedians Phil Palisoul and Mike Rayburn. On Thursday, July 21, we celebrated the installation of our new Grand Aerie and Grand Auxiliary Officers inside the newly renovated Grand Theater inside the casino, and for the first time ever, the ceremony was broadcast live via YouTube to all of our Brothers and Sisters who couldn't be with us in the Biggest Little City in the World. If you didn't get a chance to watch live, the archived video is posted now at youtube.com/FOEGrandAerie. We were also proud to announce the locations of our next four International Conventions, which include Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2017; Dallas, Texas, in 2018; Louisville, Ky., in 2019; and Spokane, Wash., in 2020. In all, it was another spectacular week of fun, friendship and fraternalism. F.O.E. Donates Its First Ekso Suit to Minneapolis VA Hospital The Fraternal Order of Eagles, an international nonprofit community organization, and Soldier Strong, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting veterans, partnered to donate an Ekso Bionics Ekso GT suit to the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Hospital. The suit was formally presented to the hospital during a ceremony on Wednesday, May 18. EKSO

Eagles & Ekso Bionics Visit Arlington National Cemetery on July 4 On the nation’s birthday, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Ekso Bionics held a joint ceremony to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Grand Trustee Ron Malz and Ekso Ambassador Austin Reese placed the wreath. Prior to the ceremony, Reese demonstrated the Ekso GT suit inside the welcome center of the cemetery as federal regulations prevent the use of the therapeutic suit outdoors.
The ceremony furthered the F.O.E.’s commitment to veterans, which also includes Operation Eagle, an annual fundraising campaign to provide care packages to those serving overseas; the Those Who Serve program, which offers a free year of membership to current and former servicemen and women and the Eagles’ Memorial Foundation, which provides health and educational benefits to the children of Eagles member who lose their lives in service to their country or while performing their job. Diabetes RESEARCH CENTER A Message from Dr. E. Dale Abel
New Faculty Announcement
We are delighted to announce that three new faculty will be joining the FOE Diabetes Research Center this Summer: Yumi Imai, M.D., will join the FOEDRC as an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Imai is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Division Chief at East Virginia Medical School. She brings a wealth of knowledge and more than 20 years of experience in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. Dr. Imai is a talented mid-career investigator who is RO1 funded. Her research focus is on the way in which obesity and fat accumulation in the pancreas reduces the function of beta cells leading to reduced insulin secretion. Dr. Imai’s recruitment will strategically establish a beta cell biology program within the FOEDRC. Her clinical expertise will complement existing programs and will address the increasing demands for clinical endocrine services at UIHC and the FOEDRC. Dr. Imai will join our faculty on August 31.
his MD and PhD degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and completed his residency and an Endocrine Fellowship at BIDMC. Dr. O’Neill is currently interested in the metabolic complications and dysregulation of muscle physiology that occur in obesity and diabetes, and the impact of diabetes and insulin resistance on protein turnover and mitochondrial metabolism. Dr. O’Neill joined our faculty on June 30.
Sam Stephens, Ph.D., has been appointed as
an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism beginning August 31. Dr. Stephens is a Senior Research Associate at Duke University Medical Center where he investigated factors that regulate pancreatic islet beta-cell function and survival. His recent studies have provided novel insight into the biological ssignificance of VGF a novel hormone derived peptide that is produced within islet β-cells. As a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Chris Newgard he identified the VGF derived peptide TLQP-21 as a physiological mediator of insulin secretion and demonstrated its direct therapeutic applicability in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in a rodent model. His work has provided strong evidence that additional VGF peptides play vital roles in regulating beta-cell identity and function. Dr. Stephen’s recruitment will also bring pancreatic beta cell expertise to the FOEDRC.
Brian T. O’Neill, M.D., Ph.D., comes the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as an Assistant Professor, from his positions as an Instructor of Medicine and Clinical Endocrinologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) at Harvard Medical School. There, he investigated mechanisms by which insulin signaling regulates the function and mass of skeletal muscle. He received DIABETES RESEARCH CENTER

Eagles Make Visit To DRC On August 15, several Grand Aerie Officers visited the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa to meet with DRC Director Dr. E. Dale Abel and staff members regarding updates within the center over the last year.
One-by-one, doctors took the podium to give a brief overview of their latest research efforts to help treat and prevent diabetes. Because the DRC team takes an all-inclusive approach to fighting diabetes, presentations ranged from updates on computer and phone software used to help diabetics become more active to extensive breakdowns of various proteins within the body which regulate fat, appetite and more.
Eagles met with leadership from the University to discuss a general overview of the University’s research efforts and how the DRC is included within those efforts. The group later gathered inside the auditorium of the John & Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building, which hosts the DRC, for updates from 20 of the center’s leading researchers.

Dear Brothers & Sisters of The Fraternal Order of Eagles: Thanks to your generous commitment to diabetes research, we have completed another successful year! The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa is celebrating the growth of the research team and grant funding while producing an impressive volume of high-quality research. Our recruiting success continues, with three new faculty members added since January and two more on the way. Our researchers have broad impact across the University. They hail from the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health and Bioengineering. This helps us achieve our goal of developing an interdisciplinary program of the highest international standard. I’m pleased to see our team’s commitment to being cohesive and connected to the community. Our 100+ investigators constantly share ideas in order to cultivate a more complete understanding of diabetes. With pride, I can say that external funding has also been successful. In the past year, our researchers received significant awards from the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Foundation and eight NIH grants. The $25.2 million we’ve received in grants since 2013 clearly demonstrates that our researchers possess tremendous aptitude for unraveling the mysteries of this complex disease. Private funding will always be important, as well, as it presents researchers with more opportunities to take greater risks, which can translate into stunning innovations. Creating a world-class diabetes research center is a long road—one we simply cannot travel without supporters like you. PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Andrew Norris, MD, PhD
Came to the UI in 2005; Joined FOEDRC in 2006 Also Practices in Pediatric Diabetes A unique type of diabetes eventually affects nearly 100% of those who have Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This terrible lung disease is made even worse by diabetes, which quickly destroys the pancreas. However, the pancreas still manages to make insulin. We want to understand this better in order to help people with CF and other types of diabetes. With several labs on campus working together, we’re the leading research group in the world to study this problem. In addition, my own lab studies how a mother’s diabetes increases the chances of the child having Type II diabetes. The great mystery is how this happens at the molecular level when the baby is first developing.
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Matthew Potthoff, PhD Recruited in 2012 Science is fun, but at the end of the day, I’m interested in finding therapeutic options that will help people. Together, the FOEDRC team is making progress on the important, longstanding problem of diabetes. My four years here have been productive in strengthening our understanding of how endocrine pathways regulate energy, which cause people to burn more energy or consume less. We’ve found one of the most powerful regulators, called FGF 21, in the liver. Giving FGF 21 to obese subjects reverses all effects of diabetes. We’re now getting down to the molecular level in order to discover how the specific beneficial functions might translate into an oral medication.

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Ling Yang, PhD Recruited in 2014 Over the past two years, I’ve been motivated by the fact that our research at the FOEDRC is driven by people helping people. The Fraternal Order of Eagles is providing great support and hope to millions. Based on the collaborative environment here, it is clear that we all want to be a team, working together to improve human health. My research focuses on how obesity contributes to insulin resistance and the chronic inflammation that affects cell function. Specifically, how does the organelle, a specialized part of a cell, respond to the stress of inflammation? If we can find a therapy that improves organelle stress response, it could be a breakthrough similar to the discovery of antibiotics.
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR Brian O’Neill, MD, PhD Recruited in 2016 My family and I moved to Iowa City in June after I had worked at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston for three years. As I occupy my lab with technicians, I’m excited to see a broad range of investigators tackling diabetes from many angles. My research explores how insulin and insulin-like growth factor influence protein metabolism. We know that a hormone called the FoxO factor controls protein metabolism, and it is suppressed by insulin signaling. We want to figure out how. People with diabetes have issues with protein metabolism and lose muscle mass more quickly, so if we can figure out a molecular reason for this, we can develop therapies to enhance protein conversion into muscle.

The Grand Aerie Support You Operating an organization the size of the Fraternal Order of Eagles requires a substantial amount of resources. Those resources are primarily provided through the biannual Per-Capita Tax paid by each Aerie and Auxiliary to the Grand Aerie.

The Per-Capita Tax made up 80.71% of all Grand Aerie income for the 20152016 fraternal year. These funds enable us to provide you with dedicated office support, fund our annual International Convention, support all agent and assignment-related travel and expenses and support all of our internal and external marketing and membership efforts.

Financials A look into the fiscal year • The Grand Aerie continues to operate within the budget approved by the delegation. Per-Capita Tax will remain at $6 in November 2016. • While we opened the DRC and fulfilled our $25 million commitment to the University of Iowa in 2014, our goal is not yet finished. In a previous year, to meet our commitment, we borrowed $2.1 million for the Charity Foundation. We must continue to fundraise and pay off the $1.2 million balance of this loan to complete our goal. • Loss of membership is the major challenge facing our organization. From a financial perspective, leadership must construct a plan to fund necessary investment in marketing, programs, and training to rejuvenate membership while membership-driven income declines.

• Uncertainty in the economy and historically low interest rates were negatively affecting funding the Pension Fund. Local Aeries were responsible for 77% of the underfunded Pension Fund when the Grand Aerie assumed liability. In real dollars, that’s $9,240,000 the Grand Aerie borrowed to fully fund the Pension Fund, allowing it to be terminated and beneficiaries to be fully paid. This allowed the Grand Aerie to budget necessary cash flow to meet payments instead of trying to meet a contribution amount that fluctuates annually with interest rates. Dealing with his now will help the Eagles thrive in the long run. The beneficiaries were paid in full and the annuities were transferred to Mutual of Omaha. WWW.FOE.COM

Auxiliary can be additionally insured in Aerie policy as well. •Bond or Employee Dishonesty coverage within your policy. •Liquor Liability Insurance. •Signed 2012 Affiliation Agreement. •990 filed for Fraternal Year ending on May 31, 2015. If all extensions were filed, deadline is April 15, 2016. Grand Auxiliary Accepting Alta B. Smith Award & Hall Of Fame Nominees The Alta Browning Smith and Hall of Fame Awards are prestigious honors presented at the International Convention each year. A recipient is chosen each year for the Alta Browning Smith Award by the Grand Madam President. This form or one in story form should be submitted by the State/Provincial Auxiliary after a sister has been approved on the floor by the State/Provincial Auxiliary Membership. The form should be sent to the Grand Madam President’s address listed on the form, no later than December 1st each year. The Grand Madam President looks at both dedication and service within the Fraternal Order of Eagles as well as within her community. Please include as much information as possible to assist the Grand Madam President in making her decision.
Nominate An Eagle For Grand Aerie Hall of Fame States and Provinces are encouraged to submit their nominees for the Grand Aerie Hall of Fame by January 6. The following are required for all submitted nominations:
The Grand Auxiliary Hall of Fame Awards are presented each year during the Ladies Auxiliary Member’s Banquet. The recipients will receive a plaque and their name will be engraved on the plaques located in the Grand Aerie and Auxiliary Headquarters on the Hall of Fame wall. Application forms for nominees of the Hall of Fame Awards must also be received by December 1st each year. However, the recipients are chosen at the February Board Meeting by the Grand Auxiliary Trustees. Again, please provide as much information as possible on the sister you are nominating.
- Must be a member of the Grand Aerie - Must have been a member for 20 consecutive years - Must have been active in some capacity at the Grand Aerie level - Each State/Province limited to one submission per year. - Nomination documents shall be certified under the Signature of the State/Provincial Worthy President and the signature and seal of the State Provincial Secretary. Please note that all Humanitarian, Sports and Entertainment nominations are exempt from the first two items listed above, however the final three requirements still apply.

Throughout his year, Grand Worthy President Jerry L. Sullivan will be raising money to benefit lupus research. Jerry has twin daughters affected by the disease and will travel the jurisdiction raising money for lupus research and bringing awareness of the debilitating disease to the membership. Jerry is a passionate advocate of lupus research, as noted by his chosen color of purple for the fraternal year, as purple is the official color of lupus awareness.
As a diabetic, Grand Madam President Judy Johnson is a proud advocate of the work being done by the Eagles’ Diabetes Research Center. As such, Judy will be raising money throughout her year to benefit the DRC. Donations should be made payable to: F.O.E. Charity Foundation with GMP-DRC noted on the memo line of your check. Special Project - University of Kansas Eye Center
Donations should be made payable to: F.O.E. Charity Foundation with GWP-Lupus noted on the memo line of your check.
The University of Kansas Eye Center provides a wide range of support, including treatment via eye drops to help slow eye deterioration due to diabetes. Judy’s special project for the year will benefit the KU Eye Center in order to provide this treatment for individuals suffering from diabetes who cannot otherwise afford it. She will be raising money during her travels to provide this amazing service to those in need. Donations should be made payable to: F.O.E. Childrens Art Contest Help area youth sharpen their creative skills by participating in the 2016 Children’s Art Contest. Children in grades 3-6 can create an original work of art on the theme of “My Favorite Thing” for a chance to win cash prizes.
