Construction Underway On Brand New Recreation Center At Eagle Village
In the coming months, Eagle Village will unveil a bigger, better recreational center for residents, members, and guests to enjoy. The project, which has been under construction for the last few months, will feature more than 5,000 sq. ft. on the inside, and 1,200 sq. ft. for the covered deck outside. The rec center will feature one large open space for gatherings and celebrating events, such as birthdays and holidays, instead of the old structure’s multi-room layout. The new rec center will include resident lockers, pool tables, bingo, a kitchen with a serving window, and will be fully handicap accessible. The building is also hurricane rated. According to Eagle Village Operations Manager Keith McGrath, the old rec center was torn down because it had
served its purpose and it was time to invest in a new one. Since 1961, five additions were made to the old building, and the gathering space was split into two rooms. Eagle Village decided they wanted a singular, cohesive space so they re-designed the center so it will be more inclusive for the community. McGrath has been overseeing the construction of this project, and he is excited to see the new building come together. “It’s something that will benefit all Eagle Village residents and members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles,” he said. In 2019, the Fraternal Order of Eagles International Convention is headed back to the Bluegrass State as we return to Louisville’s Galt House Hotel, July 6-11. Top Producers/ New Leaders for October 2018

On October 10, Grand Worthy President Carl Burnett and his wife, Sylvia, marched to the U.S. Capitol building with more than 200 supporters of his special charity, METAvivor, to raise awareness for Stage IV metastatic breast cancer and ask representatives for an increase in funding for the disease. Brave women and men fighting the disease were able to visit staff of various Congressmen from across the country, sharing their stories and explaining how their support for upcoming legislation could have improve the quality of life of those suffering. The event, held annually by METAvivor, helps to provide a face to the fight against State IV metastatic breast cancer and played a significant role in a $2 billion increase for metastatic cancer funding by the National Institute of Health over the last year. Carl and Sylvia teamed with survivors from Texas and Ohio during the congressional visits to thank current supporters for their efforts to increase funding and to encourage those who have yet to sponsor legislation to sign on for the fight against metastatic breast cancer. The unique experience provided our Grand Worthy President with an inside look at how funds raised for the GWP project in 2018-19 will be used to improve countless lives through vital medical research grants.

We Are People Helping People Arizona - Lake Havasu #4299 held their annual Miss Mess contest, and raised $4,269 for Art Ehrmann Cancer month. The money will go toward cancer research, GMP’s City of Hope charity, Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and Leukemia research. California -Alameda Aerie #1076 held a fundraiser for Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) and was able to present them with a check for $814. Additionally on August 25, #1076 donated $1,170 to Pets for Vets. Colorado - Colorado State JPW George Duran presented an $11,567.34 check to the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute for their Rocky Mountain Blood Fund. RMBF provides grants to blood cancer patients to help ease the financial burden that patients and families experience during the treatment for the devastating effects of blood cancers. Duran is a survivor and the Colorado State Aerie is giving back to this lifesaving organization as a part of the State Presidents Special Project. Florida - Panhandle Aerie #4045 stepped up to help those affected by Hurricane Michael. Through donations, and help from others, they were able to donate pallets of water, and approximately 5,000 lbs. of supplies. Additionally, two charcoal/ propane grills were anonymously donated, so the Aerie purchased tanks of propane, charcoal, and lighter fluid, and donated those items to Fire Chief Nicky Lovett of Marianne. Georgia - The St. Marys Eagle Riders #4379 conducted a Charity Ride on September 29 to raise $2,105 to support Jason Gardner in his fight with cancer. Jason, the son of Auxiliary Madam President Cheryl Gardner and Aerie Vice President Pete Gardner was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and couldn’t believe so many strangers would come together to help him. Seeing what the Eagles is about, Jason was initiated on October 15 and hopes to help others as he was helped. Illinois - Blue Island Auxiliary #1332 donated Kleenex and bleach wipes to their local middle school to o help with the cold and flu season. Indiana -Vincennes Auxiliary #384’s Vice President Terri Bodine presented a $1,000

- Virginia Beach Eagles #3204’s Auxiliary President Debbie Hall and Aerie President Bill Singleton were presented with the 2018 Eastern Virginia Medical School Outstanding Community Champion Award. Over the past 20 years, #3204 has donated a total of $100,000 to the Eastern Virginia Medical School Diabetes Research Center. Grant to Good Samaritan Hospital’s Think Pink initiative in honor of Breast Cancer awareness. Missouri -Past Madam State President and Past Madam South Central Regional President Barb Cornine was recently featured in HERHEALTH magazine for her work with Ovarian Cancer and the Vicki Welsh Foundation. Barb is a 13-year ovarian cancer survivor and as a part of her special charity, the state raised over $30,000 and donated it to the Vicki Welsh fund. While the fund brings awareness to Ovarian Cancer, much of the money raised was donated to the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS for Ovarian Cancer research. South Dakota - Inclement weather threatened the cancellation of The University of South Dakota’s homecoming festivities and Sunshine Aerie and Auxiliary #2421 stepped to provide the venue so the party could go on. Just two hours before, the Aerie and Auxiliary were holding rituals in the same room. Tennessee -Scenic City Aerie #945 gave a $5,000 cancer fund grant to Catholic Health Initiatives Memorial Hospital.
Wisconsin - The Wisconsin State Aerie recently made a $1,000 donation to the Wisconsin Badger Camp in Prairie du Chien, WI. The donation will be used to purchase canoes and equipment for the campers. -At the Western Zone Conference in Merrill Northwoods, the Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) chapter received a $1,000 grant from the Merrill Aerie and Auxiliary #584 to go towards purchasing fingerprint identification equipment. Wyoming - Wyoming State Auxiliary #11051 presented two checks totaling more than $20,000 to the Hunstman Cancer Institute. The checks included a $5,000 grant from the Grand Aerie. Utah -Murray Eagles #1760 recently donated $5,644 to the Murray Boys and Girls Club. They raised the money by holding a golf tournament fundraiser on August 4. Utah - With a match from the Grand Aerie, Murray Aerie #1760 was able to present a $2,000 check to the Intermountain Heath Care Foundation Primary Children's Hospital for Heart Disease Research and Development. Primary Children's Hospital is a nonprofit that does not turn a child away based on ability to pay.

Amenities in addition to the new center include a library, pool, gym, shuffleboard court and a three-acre lake with private lighted path for walking or bike riding. Units have one bedroom and include central heating and air conditioning. “Eagle Village is one of the Eagles’ greatest benefits,” said Grand Worthy President Carl Burnett. “We’re excited to have a new recreation center opening soon that will only improve the quality of the Village and serve for many years as a host for great fraternal memories.” The new rec center will celebrate its grand opening on February 23, 2019 – which is also Eagle Village’s 58th year anniversary. An Aerie or Auxiliary can support Eagle Village by becoming a permanent fixture at the new Eagle Village rec center. Commemorative gold nameplates and quarry tiles are available for purchase on the Eagle Village page on FOE.com. All donations will go toward the construction costs of the rec center.

Last Call for Auxiliary Hall of Fame Nominations The Alta Browning Smith and Hall of Fame Awards are prestigious honors presented at the International Convention each year. A recipient is chosen each year for the Alta Browning Smith Award by the Grand Madam President. This form or one in story form should be submitted by the State/Provincial Auxiliary after a sister has been approved on the floor by the State/Provincial Auxiliary Membership. The Grand Madam President looks at both dedication and service within the Fraternal Order of Eagles as well as within her community. The Grand Auxiliary Hall of Fame Awards are presented each year during the Ladies’ Auxiliary Banquet. The recipients will receive a plaque and their name will be engraved on the plaques located in the Grand Aerie and Auxiliary Headquarters.Nominations for both are due by December 1. Please include as much information as possible on the sisters you are nominating. Neither forms are held over on a year-to-year basis. Any rejected forms from previous years will need to be resubmitted. Update to the Charity Foundation As of Sept. 17, the Children’s Aids Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention funds have been merged with the FOE Charity Foundation Children’s Fund.
