Children's Art Contest Deadline Approaching Entries for the 2017 Children's Art Contest must be submitted to the Grand Aerie by February 17. The contest is open to children in grades 3-6, with a $500 grand prize, $200 for first place in each division, $100 for second place, $75 for third and $50 for fourth place. This year's theme is My Favorite Thing. Contestants must submit an original artwork on paper no larger than 11x17. Crayon, pen, watercolor and acrylic may be used. Oils and Charcoals are not permitted as they are often damaged en route to the Grand Aerie. An entry form must be filled out clearly and include the student's address. Incomplete forms will be disqualified. The contest is judged based on originality, relevance to theme, artistic ability and adherence to contest rules. Winners will be announced via foe. com on March 15 and will be displayed at International Convention in July. For more information, visit the Art Contest page at www.foe.com.
GWP Jerry L. Sullivan Attends Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Ceremony Fraternal Order of Eagles Grand Worthy President Jerry L. Sullivan, of Fredericksburg, Va., #4123, was invited to be a special guest at the 75th Anniversary ceremony at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The invitation-only ceremony included hundreds of guests who came to honor those who fought at Pearl Harbor, many of which spoke to the crowd about the historic event. In 2008, the Eagles donated more than $50,000 toward the construction of the new Pearl Harbor Visitors Center & Museum, which features the history of the base, the events of Dec. 7, 1941, the many who lost their lives on that
day and a section dedicated to the history of World War II. “It was an incredible honor to represent the Fraternal Order of Eagles at such an amazing event,” Sullivan said. “Several years ago, we had the opportunity to make a contribution to the wonderful new center developed to honor those who gave and risked their lives in the attack and to experience this event first hand was an opportunity I’ll never forget.” Jerry and his wife, Maxine, toured the Museum and Visitors center, met with members at Hawaii's Aeries and had the opportunity to interact with other guests on hand for the occasion.

We Are People Helping People Arizona -Lake Havasu City #4299 held their Miss Mess 2016 event, raising $1,280 for cancer causes. Arkansas -Arkansas Past State Worthy President Paul Szecsi and Past State Madam President Georgianna McKown presented a total of $52,460.58 to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital – Angel One. The money was raised during the 2015-2016 Eagle year to help fund the helicopter transport project. California -Needles #2599 raised $380 for the City of Hope Research and Treatment Center with an American Flag raffle. The beautiful wooden flag was created and donated by Frank Rodriguez of Barstow. Winners of this distinguished flag were Al Townsend, Kathy Wofford and Kay Luisi. They generously redonated the flag back to the Aerie in order to continue raising money. Connecticut -Norwalk Eagle Riders #588 held a BBQ/Poker Run event to raise money for Rivers of Recovery, supporting veterans with PTSD, raising $1,300. Dakotas -Sunshine #2421 in Vermillion presented a grant for $5,000 from the D.D. Dunlap Kidney Fund to University of South Dakota researchers Curtis Kost, Jr., PhD and Douglas Martin, PhD for a project entitled Protective Effect of Bradykinin Receptors in Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease. The check was presented by visiting Grand Worthy President-Elect Tom McGrath. Florida -Suncoast Aux. #3153 held an Italian event for Alzheimer’s, presenting a grant check for $2,000 to Dan Minor of the Alzheimer’s South Florida Foundation. Indiana - River City Aux. #4023 made a donation of $1,000 to Vanderburgh County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The organization advocates and serves as a voice in court for kids who have been abused or neglected. Kansas -Lawrence #309 presented donations to the Lawrence Police Department’s Blue Santa program and Toys for Tots. Michigan -Coldwater #1907 held a Cash Cow event and Family Picnic, raising $900

Osborn Fraternal Order of Eagles #2843 recently presented a $3,000 grant from the Jimmy Durante Children’s Fund to El Mirage Police Department’s Victims Assistance Unit. The grant was made possible through Osborn’s work in winning the 2016 Children’s Day Contest thanks to an event planned last year with the help of the VAU to educate area families. Minnesota -While serving as State President of the Minnesota Eagles Auxiliary in 20152016, Mary Lee chose Hospice of the Red River to be her charity. Various Eagles fundraisers at the state and local level and the Past Presidents Club of Detroit Lakes #2342 helped raise $18,642.76 for the Hospice. Missouri -Marceline #726 raffled off the new Henry Golden Boy Fraternal Order of Eagles Commemorative Rifle to raise money for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Fund in memory of PWP Steve Weese, who chaired the Diabetes Fund for many years and passed away in 2016 from complications due to diabetes. The raffle raised $700 with Johnny Weikert of Gettysburg, Pa., selected as the winner. Montana -2015-16 Madam President Connie Howell chose Vietnam Veterans, SW Montana, Chapter #788 as her charity for the year, raising $2,500. The organization aggressively advocates for issues important to Veterans and seek full access to quality medical care and more.
Nebraska -The Auxiliary of Columbus #1834 voted to make the Inclusive Playground their special project. For more than three years, Jeri Furby has served as the Auxiliary’s Jimmy Durante Children’s Fund chairman and has been raising money for the project. During a recent meeting, the Auxiliary discussed the option of making this their local project for the year. With the help of the Auxiliary’s bingo event, Karen Penington, Bingo Chairman, recommended a $1,000 donation. The vote was unanimous. Teachers and Para’s led by Megan Johnson, an Autism teacher at Lost Creek School, started working on this dream to build an inclusive play environment that would serve the physical, social, sensory, cognitive and emotional needs of all children in the community, regardless of disability. It will be housed at Lost Creek Elementary. New Jersey -In 2004, PWP George Fitzpatrick started what has grown in to a holiday tradition at Somerset Aerie #2137. His idea “The Giving Tree,” embodied the heard of the organization and

That year, and every year since, a decorated Christmas tree has been placed in the foyer with ornaments made of tags with an age and gender written on them. Members choose one or more ornament and return with an age and appropriate gift. Over the years, the tradition has grown thanks to the hard work of George Faxon, who has taken over the annual effort. Pennsylvania -Lock Haven F.O.E. #4298 donated $5,000 to the Salvation Army. Virginia -Piedmont #4420 made their annual visit to Pittsylvania County School Board Office on Monday, Nov. 21, to deliver 26 dinners for distribution to families for Thanksgiving. Members of the Eagles shopped for, packed the dinners in boxes, then loaded them into the group’s trailer for the ride to Chatham. Washington -Stevenson Eagles #1744 donated $6,000 to their county school’s music program. British Columbia -On Oct. 4, the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Chemainus-Crofton #4400 presented Tour de Rock team members with a check for $1,500 for Pediatric Cancer Research and support programs at a breakfast held at the Legion. The Canadian Cancer Society Cops For Cancer Tour de Rock is a fundraising event to support Pediatric Cancer Research and support programs for children with cancer. Since 1998, more than 300 police officers have been named to the team along with 41 others, including childhood cancer survivors, longtime volunteers and members of the media who tell their stories. Riders are paired with a junior rider from a group of Vancouver Island children who have battled, are battling or are the sibling of someone who lost their battle with cancer. South Central -On very rare occasions do members from each of the respective levels gather to teach and share in the fraternal spirit. At the South Central Regional Conference on Oct. 22-24, hosted by Saint Joseph, Mo., #49, such an event happened.
