Folsom Eagles #929 Sees Significant
Younger Member Growth T
hree years ago, Folsom Aerie #929 in Folsom, Calif., was facing a tough decision on whether or not they would have to close their doors for good, due to declining membership.
Friends of Folsom was growing so rapidly that they had outgrown their usual meet up spots like restaurants or bars, and were in need of finding a set, physical location to meet and do their charity work.
All that changed thanks to a community non-profit organization in need of a regular location to host their meetings.
During the search for a venue, they found Folsom Eagles #929 and reached out to them. Since this fateful encounter with the Eagles, several hundred members of Friends of Folsom have joined the Aerie.
From there, the Friends of Folsom and Eagles #929 merged as one large non-profit organization, with both having the mission of helping others. Friends of Folsom is an organization made up of families and friends, or as they call it, ‘Framily,’ in the Folsom community assembled to help fill their community’s needs. Over the years, their ‘Framily’ has gained members outside the Folsom area, from different parts of the state and abroad. folsom
Before Friends of Folsom came along, Aerie #929 was suffering greatly from membership decline, and the challenges of an aging membership. The Aerie had not had any new or younger members in over a decade, however, with the addition of F.O.F., and an influx of hundreds of new and younger members, they were able to completely revive the Aerie.

Folsom Eagles was rejuvenated with new life, families, activies, events, and was thriving financially as well, which allowed them to be even more active for their community. Friends of Folsom have now been a part of the Aerie for three years, and have developed new activities to accommodate to the younger crowd. Every Monday night, the club hosts a cornhole tournament, and they host regular father-daughter paint nights, open paint nights, band performances, live music events, and host girls’ softball workshops in the hall and parking lot. The Aerie has also held food drives to provide much needed resources to youth in need through their affiliation with Blessings in a Backpack, held bicycle pub cruises, and collected clothing, food, water, and gifts to fill the needs of their Adopt a Family-Toys for Tots program during Christmas. As of now, the members are working on an Easter basket assembly night to provide Easter baskets to area children in need. They are also planning on hosting their annual Bar Game Olympics on April fool’s day weekend that will draw in dozens of teams and hundreds of spectators – all while having proceeds go to help feed families on Thanksgiving. The group said last year, with the money raised, they were able to handle 100% of the Twin Lakes Food Bank’s needs for Thanksgiving turkeys, as well as feed an additional 6,000 plus families in Sacramento, San Diego, Texas, and Oklahoma. Folsom #929 Vice President Jeff Garcia said that when Friends of Folsom originally joined the Aerie, they were very accommodating to the growth, and have been a great vehicle for the Friends of Folsom’s mission to help the community. Garcia has now been a member of the Aerie for three years and likes it because it gives him and the F.O.F. a home for good times and beneficial work. He said that folsom

the Aerie is very open-armed and relaxed, and it is not unusual to see children playing, dogs being welcomed, and spirits being lifted both emotionally, and in liquid form. “I appreciate my role within the Aerie and being a part of the ‘Framily.’ We truly as we say put the ‘Fun into FUNdraising,’” Garcia said. “Knowing that you were going to buy a meal, play with your kids, have a beer, listen to some music, or enjoy a function anyway, but now by doing so, you are helping the community,” Garcia said. Folsom Aerie #929 hopes to continue to grow membership and increase community involvement. “We are lucky enough to be located in the heart of an amazing town. Our town and our Aerie are filled with history, so we hope to ensure a legacy of where friends become ‘Framily’ and good times and good works are plentiful,” Garcia said. Garcia hopes that other Eagles locations will embrace younger membership, which will continue the Fraternal Order of Eagles mission and extend the legacy. “I believe that organizations and charities with rich history could suffer the fate of dying with aged membership by not embracing things like new generations, technology, fresh perspectives, and flat out youthful energy,” Garcia said.

LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA Lebanon Aerie #472 donated $10,000 to the North Annville Police Chief Matthew Bartal and 911 Rapid Response Owner Mark Sallada’s 911 Rapid Response Project. The 911 RRP’s purpose is to help prevent officers from being killed in the line of duty. Equipment will be distributed to each police department, the county detective bureau and sheriff’s office and will include: Pouches with firstaid materials like a chest seal, gauze, bandages, trauma shears, a tourniquet, a hemostatic agent to control bleeding, active shooter vests, and ballistic helmets.
BRUNSWICK, OHIO 300 community volunteers gathered at the Brunswick Aerie #3505 to participate in the organization’s 42nd annual Christmas Baskets program. Diane Bokar, event chairwoman, said roughly $20,000 was raised to help provide 27 families in need with a combination of food staples, gift cards and Christmas presents. In addition to the food supplies and Christmas presents, each child also received a winter coat, hat and pair of gloves.
CAMPBELL RIVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA Campbell River Aerie and Auxiliary #3097 presented an $8,150 check and donated a total of 1,447 food items to their local food back. The money was raised through catering, pie, jam and bake sales, and dinners.
ALEXANDRIA, INDIANA Invincible Aerie #1771 held their 13th Annual Car and Bike show and was able to present $10,000 to Alternatives of Madison County from funds raised during the show.

IN FEBRUARY, several Eagles dignitaries and the Eagle Village board gathered in Bradenton, Fla., to officially open the Village's brand new 5,000+ sq. ft. recreation center. The center includes a new open floorplan, a 1,200 sq. ft. outdoor patio for events and a large new kitchen for food preparation. The new rec center includes resident lockers, pool tables, bingo, a kitchen with a serving window, and will be fully handicap accessible. The building is also hurricane rated. According to Eagle 16

Village Operations Manager Keith McGrath, the old rec center was torn down because it had served its purpose and it was time to invest in a new one. “It’s something that will benefit all Eagle Village residents and members of the F.O.E.” he said. Eagle Village, located just minutes from the beach, is a 26-acre community for senior members of the Eagles, featuring 85 units open to Eagles with at least 10 years of continuous membership. Amenities in addition to the new center include a library, pool, gym, shuffleboard court and a three-acre lake with private lighted path for walking or bike riding. Units have one bedroom and include central heating and air conditioning. “Eagle Village is one of the Eagles’ greatest benefits,” said Grand Worthy President Carl Burnett. “We’re excited to have a new recreation center opening soon that will only improve the quality of the Village and serve for many years as a host for great fraternal memories.” An Aerie or Auxiliary can support Eagle Village by becoming a permanent fixture at the new Eagle Village rec center. from UI Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center
The Department of Defense office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs has awarded DRC member, Ethan Anderson, Associate Professor College of Pharmacy, funding as part of its Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) Discovery Award competition. The project is: Exploiting the Paracrine-Like Effect of Prohibitin-1 to Treat Septic Cardiomyopathy. The grant will provide $310,000 in total support over a 2-year period. The project will examine the mitochondrial membrane protein Prohibitin-1 (PHB1) in a model of heart failure that is associated with the often lethal disorder septic shock. Heart failure is associated with impaired cardiac metabolism that limits the energy production that the heart requires for maintaining its contractile function. It is evident that PHB1 may regulate glucose metabolism in the heart, possibly via a unique mechanism in mitochondria. However, the Anderson laboratory has discovered another potential mechanism by which PHB1 could protect the heart. This application, which was submitted in response to the PRMRP topic area of ‘Cardiomyopathy’ stems from Anderson’s exciting unpublished, preliminary diabetes research center
findings where they have identified a previously unknown role for a family of lipid raft-associated proteins, called ‘Prohibitins,’ during sepsis. Sepsis is a very serious, often fatal clinical condition resulting from an infection or tissue damage. Prohibitins (PHB1, 2) are normally found in the plasma membrane and densely packed in mitochondrial membranes, where they are at the nexus of cellular metabolism and life/death signaling pathways. The idea behind this proposal stems from the Anderson’s lab’s exciting recent findings that PHB1 may be acting as a ‘brake’ on inflammation during sepsis. In other words, this protein may be working in our bodies to try to restore normal organ function during sepsis by blunting the hyper-inflammatory stress that is induced by our immune system. The Anderson laboratory has observed is that when PHB1 is injected into mice experiencing septic shock, it completely restores normal heart function and metabolism, thereby rescuing the mice from death. Therefore, Dr. Anderson proposes to use this protein as a ‘blueprint,’ to design a new drug for septic cardiomyopathy (and potentially other inflammatory and metabolic disorders) based on their recent discovery of the protein’s normal function during sepsis. 18

Three in 10 patients who battle breast cancer will end up with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer, yet only 2% of all breast cancer research dollars benefit the study of this terminal stage. Grand Worthy President Carl Burnett aims to change those percentages by making METAvivor his charity for 2018-19. METAvivor is the only organization in the United States exclusively funding
metastatic breast cancer research. Each year, they provide grants to individuals with a clinical or doctoral degree whose proposals show promise in making a difference for the Stage IV community. At the end of Carl's year, he will have the opportunity to sit down with METAvivor staff to go through grant proposals and personally select a research project that he would like to donate his funds to.
City of Hope THE

Every year, City of Hope, a nonprofit clinical research center and hospital in Duarte, Calif., conducts clinical trials enrolling more than 6,000 patients, converting research developments into actual life-saving cures. Grand Madam President Althea Lane hopes to add to that total as she selects City of Hope as her special project. City of Hope has been named a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the PRESIDENTS CHAR-
presidents charities
National Cancer Institute and has been ranked one of the country's Best Cancer Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report for more than a decade. In addition to world class research and care, specialists at City of Hope provide education to patients and their families, hold support groups, provide social resources and a variety of other therapies and service that help to augment the treatment experience.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE When we made our initial $25 million donation, $15 million was set aside in endowed funds to consistently fund research efforts at the facility. In the time since, those dollars have funded research which has generated more than $300 million in research grants that have expanded our efforts and turned the FOE Diabetes Research Center into a medical research powerhouse that grows stronger and stronger by the day. The Bridge to the Cure serves as the next evolution in this process and helps bring us closer than ever to our ultimate goal of a cure.
re you proud to be an Eagle! After 121 years of Fraternal Order of Eagles community involvement and success, we should all feel great to be an Eagle. Our many great accomplishments include Mother’s Day, the Social Security Act, the creation of the Memorial Foundation, Nationwide Jobs After Forty Program, the creation of Eagle Village living community for our Senior Members and The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. These, and many more, have happened because of YOU - the Membership of our great organization. The loan we had to pay off the pledge of $25 million dollars for the FOEDRC was officially paid off in September. Since then, all donations you have continued to give to the DRC have gone towards our next project The Bridge to the Cure, which was overwhelming approved by the Delegates at International Convention in Dallas last year. Again, we have partnered with the University of Iowa to review some of the patented discoveries by our researchers at the FOEDRC to identify potential cures to this dreaded disease. The next step will require animal and human testing, FDA approval and support from Capital Investors. The weight of the World is on our shoulders. 371

The fraternal year is coming to an end soon for all of us, led by GWP Carl Burnett and GMP Althea Lane. Aerie members still have time to sign a member and earn an entry for a chance at six prizes ranging from $500 to $4,500. Proposers who attend the International Convention in Louisville, Ky., will be entered in a second set of drawings, exclusive for Convention attendees. GMP Althea Lane will be awarding cash prizes totaling $10,000, announced daily at the convention for everyone who signed members during this exciting year. If you still haven’t signed a member, please reach out to your Local Aerie and Auxiliary Secretary for prospective members who were dropped over the past few years and explain to them all of the new and fun things your Local Aerie and Auxiliaries are doing for the community through fundraising. Remember, the key for keeping a new member is to get them active. Reaching out to them and making them feel at home goes a long way toward the success of having a happy and long-tenured member for your Local Aerie/Auxiliary. This year, we have seen a continued increase in members signed. Because membership
of your efforts, our organization will continue to conduct fundraising events which will help your local community charities, along with the many national charities, especially Bridge for the Cure. Diabetes effects many of us and with our hard work, we can one day find the cure for millions of people. BEING A QUALITY PROPOSER Proposers are typically the first introduction new members have to the Fraternal Order of Eagles. As a proposer, you have a responsibility to welcome your new member into the organization and help them integrate themselves into the Order. A good proposer should: -Explain in detail who we are and what we do. -Make sure the candidate knows the eligibility requirements for membership. -Make them aware of the Membership Award Incentives and how they work. -Be at a meeting where their candidate is interviewed and voted on. -Be at the meeting when they are initiated. -Make sure they know when regular meetings are held and their obligation to attend. -Keep them up to date about upcoming events at the Aerie/Auxiliary. -Introduce them to new Brothers & Sisters. -Follow up when it’s time to renew their dues.

On January 19, 2019, Culpeper Aerie and Auxiliary #4551, became the newest addition to the Fraternal Order of Eagles During the institution, there were 103 Aerie charter applicants and 83 Auxiliary charter applicants. Robbie and Mary Wilson served as the organizers for the new Aerie and Auxiliary with Grand Worthy President Carl Burnett and Grand Madam President Althea Lane serving as the Instituting Deputies. The idea of starting a new Eagles club in Culpeper came about after researching and recognizing a need in the area. Mary Wilson said that to spread the word, they had set up a table at their local flea market. The organizers also tried to raise awareness of the organization by word of mouth, attending Town Council meetings, putting a notice in their local newspaper, and using social media to gain traction from prospective members.

hanks to the kindness and generosity of our Aeries and Auxiliaries, the 2018 Operation Eagle campaign raised a total of $15,937.83 for six recipients currently serving in the United States Military. Russell Stilson, Marisa Minton, Kevin McCann, David Potter, David Moruzzi and Daniel Kent each received an iPad mini, digital camera and several boxes of food, clothing items, toiletries, games, magazines, books, movies and more to help entertain their companies during deployment. All packages were received prior to the holidays and all of our recipients offer their gratitude to Eagles everywhere for their generous gifts. he Fraternal Order of Eagles is continuing its partnership with NASCAR driver Justin Haley in 2019 - this time in NASCAR's second biggest touring series, the Xfinity Series. Haley will pilot the #11 Chevy Camaro for Kaulig Racing with the F.O.E. as a secondary sponsor and will run select NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series Races with the F.O.E. as primary sponsor, including April 28 in the Geico 500 from Talladega and July 6 in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 from Daytona. The Eagles previously sponsored Haley in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series, championing Haley to three wins and 31 Top 10 finishes, as well as in the Xfinity Series where he started the year with two career Top 10 finishes and a near win in last year's Summer Daytona race before NASCAR officials determined he'd dropped below the track's yellow line, costing him the win. LeafFilter will serve as Haley's primary sponsor in the Xfinity Series in 2019. As of press time, Haley has recorded two Top 10s nascar

Financials A look into the fiscal year • The Grand Aerie continues to operate within the budget approved by the delegation. Per-Capita Tax will remain at $6.00 in May 2019. Starting with the 2019-2020 Fraternal Year, Per-Capita Tax will be billed on an annual basis. There will not be a Per-Capita Tax calculation in November 2019. Per-Capita Tax will be calculated in May 2020 and will be $12.00. • While we opened the DRC and fulfilled our $25,000,000 commitment to the University of Iowa, our goal is not yet finished. The goal was to find a cure for diabetes. We must continue to fundraise for the DRC so we can find that cure! • Membership loss is the key obstacle facing The Fraternal Order of Eagles. Membership is the lifeblood of the organization. Financially, leadership must continue to fund necessary investment in marketing, programs and training to boost membership. financials

• The Employees’ Pension Fund no longer exists due to the Grand Aerie assuming the liability. The Grand Aerie borrowed $9,240,000 on behalf of the Local Aeries to fully fund the Pension Fund, allowing it to be terminated and the beneficiaries fully paid. • The Pension Fund loan debt payment of $1,800,000 accounts for almost a quarter of the Per-Capita Tax revenue received per year. If membership revenue continues to decline, this will consume a larger percentage of the budget each year. Operating expenses have decreased or remained relatively flat for eight consecutive years. The increase in the per capita tax rate passed in 2013 is no longer compensating for the loss of membership.
